Providing Permanent Sanctuar y

The Sanctuary’s

Four Pillars of Care

Jenny Fridge and her husband, Eric, ventured into foster care in 2020. With four kids of their own, one adopted, Jenny says, “I started as a foster parent and worked myself into a job.” The Sanctuary Foster Care Services opened its doors in Clear Lake in April 2020. That September, the Fridges got their first foster child ‒ a three-year-old little girl who had experienced trauma.

Now on staff full-time in Community Development, Jenny uses her experience as a foster parent to help raise awareness and critical funds for The Sanctuary as they work with families in the Fort Bend area. “We are meeting a desperate need by stepping into foster care in a unique way with 360-degree support,” she explains. The Fort Bend branch opened its doors in 2023. To date, The Sanctuary has cared for over 400 children.

“Our mission is to provide permanent sanctuary and healing homes for our foster children,” Jenny continues. “The average foster child moves seven times. We want to stop that cycle of movement and help kids find permanence. If they can find permanence, they can begin to heal and have a real future. We offer four Pillars of Care that help keep kids in one home for a long period of time with the ultimate goal of either reunification or adoption.”

Pillar One ‒ Therapy & In-Home Support:

The Sanctuary offers professional Therapy & In-Home Support to not only the foster child, but also to the foster parents and their biological kids. “A therapist came to our house once a week to work with our whole family. She helped with our marriage, our high school girls and the little girl living with us. It was all encompassing,” Jenny explains.

Pillar Two ‒ 24 Hour Crisis Intervention:

The Sanctuary has a multi-branch model to ensure their staff is within 30 minutes of each of their families. In the event a crisis call is made, someone is able to get to them quickly. Jenny says, “We experienced a crisis in the middle of the night. We rocked, prayed, sang, ate snacks, and prayed again. When you’re in that moment, you start to panic. We called the crisis hotline and someone got in the car and came to our house immediately.”

Pillar Three ‒ Respite and Babysitting:

The Sanctuary trains and certifies an army of care providers because not just anyone can watch a foster child. “Once a month, our case manager would say, ‘When do you need a break?’” explains Jenny. “They would keep the child from Friday through Sunday in a safe, loving environment. We literally just used that time to breathe. Getting those breaks is how parents survive and helps prevent them from giving up and causing additional moves.”

Pillar Four ‒ Community-Based Support:

“Recently, one of our single foster mom’s washing machine broke, and she had buckets in her bathtub just trying to keep up. Sometimes something as simple as a broken washer can break a family in this situation – it can be the last straw. A donor provided the funds to get a new washer,” Jenny says. Community support can range anywhere from providing meals, to getting a teen new cleats for football, to providing a computer for school, or even prayer teams and staff appreciation activities.

“We’re not asking foster parents to do this alone,“ Jenny concludes. “You just have to learn what is everyone’s ‘something’ they can offer. Not everyone can be a foster parent, but everyone can do something.”

A Fort Bend Home Built for Royalty

Fort Bend County encompasses a total of 875 square miles. You can live in Fort Bend and be in a bustling city, a sleepy town, or out in the country. This newly listed home with the Cathy Stubbs Team offers a little bit of everything.

In the rural Brazos Lakes subdivision off FM 762 near George Ranch High School, you’ll find this beautiful 5,600 square foot home on an acre of land ‘out in the country.’ Co-listed by Cathy and team member Brittany Zalman, this luxury, one-of-a-kind home offers a relaxing water view and expansive space inside with an open-concept design and high ceilings that offer an unobstructed view to the large, private yard.

“The property was thoughtfully designed with every detail in mind. All bedrooms are on the first floor with each having their own en-suite bathroom. The gourmet kitchen offers an extravagant center island and sleek custom cabinetry which is open to the living area, creating a perfect atmosphere for entertaining,” Brittany says. “The home sits on an expansive one-acre lot with an outdoor living space, including a pool, spa, and outdoor kitchen it allows you to enjoy modern country living in a custom luxury home with all the amenities.”

But this country home will soon be on the edge of an up-and-coming 4,700-acre development designed to offer the conveniences of a city. Austin Point plans

1,000+ acres of nature nestled between 17 million square feet of commercial space and 10,000 homes.

“Austin Point is the largest community launched in Fort Bend County in 40 years,” says Royce Brooks, marketing director for The Signorelli Company, the developers of Austin Point.

“In a few years, upon completion of the Fort Bend Parkway extension, Austin Point will be 25 minutes from the Texas Medical Center and 30 minutes from downtown Houston. Austin Point is expected to surpass the features and lifestyle of a typical master-planned community. It’s set to become a regionally transformative city with an estimated population of 50,000 residents.”

“With the new developments around it, this home will offer proximity to retail, grocery, and medical facilities,” Brittany adds. “It offers a truly unique opportunity to own a new, custom home that is already built in a growing area. Comparable homes have not previously been available for resale in this area, making it a rare opportunity for home buyers.”

“Whether you want to live in the city or a more rural environment, the Cathy Stubbs Team has you covered,” says Cathy Stubbs. “Let us find your family’s perfect home. My associates and I love seeing the smiling faces of so many new homeowners in our community.”

Smooth Operators

There are many different choices for people who want to remove or shape body hair. According to one 2020 statistic, almost 6.5 million women employed waxing services to achieve their goals at least four times a year. But, with waxing, can come irritations like ingrown hairs, irritated skin, and pain. At European Wax Centers, associates take waxing seriously because they take their guests seriously. They use their innovation and expertise to make sure every person who walks through the door leaves feeling like their best self. “AND we do it better than anyone else,” says Shipra Agrawal, owner of the European Wax Centers in Sugar Land and Cinco Ranch. The salon’s differentiator is their expertise plus their special, smooth European wax and accompanying products. European Wax Centers’ Exclusive Comfort Wax is a hard stripless wax. It is a proprietary blend great for all skin types. European Wax Centers are the only ones in the world who have this wax!

Jacqui Riosa, a wax service associate in the Sugar Land location, says, “There’s no other wax that’s like a European wax. It’s smoother and grabs

most hair in one pull instead of multiple pulls.” Her favorite product is the exfoliator gel, which is “sensitive enough to use everywhere.”

Alyssa Garza, from the Cinco Ranch location, says, “I just love having my clients feel comfortable in their own skin. I also make sure they’re comfortable with the process from beginning to end. I just give my customers a great experience.”

Alyssa’s favorite product is the Treat Body Polish, “because it prevents and treats ingrown hairs. We have a lot of great products that make a difference in the routine and comfort level for the customer.”

Shipra credits her women-led team of associates for the success of her waxing salon. She says, “All of our wax specialists are licensed and undergo extensive in-house training.” And they build guest loyalty through retail products, Wax pass packages, the experience delivered, and their EWC Rewards Loyalty program.

European Wax Center’s most popular services are brow shaping and Brazilians for women, but they also see their fair share of men, who want to clean up their chests and backs. With more than 1,000 locations all over the United States, European Wax Center has been serving the Sugar Land community since 2011.

DENTAL Health: Pro Tips for Parents

“WTrusted Dentists. Happy Kids.

e always strive to help children grow up with healthy teeth. With early intervention and preventive services like dental sealants and fluoride varnish, children will have fewer oral health issues as an adult. Taking care of little teeth early is truly worth the effort,” says Dr. Faisal Khan, owner of Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental. Together with associates Dr. Priyanshi Ritwik, Dr. Annie Zheng, and Dr Khadija Khan, as well as an oral surgeon and anesthesiologist, Dr. Khan’s focus on making children comfortable results in happy patients.

The Chow Family

“Aimee had a cap done and needed a sealant. The staff was very calm and helpful. Aimee had a lot of questions!” Michelle Chow says. “The assistant patiently talked her through everything. Aimee got a little laughing gas to ease her stress and she didn’t cry at all. It only took 30 minutes in total.”

The Rogers-Salinas Family

The Kratzer Family

“Tairracha has high anxiety and Dr. Khan knows just how to deal with it,” says grandma Glenda Kratzer. “His interaction with Tairracha is great. When he sees her in the lobby, he comes out to say hello. He’s awesome. We couldn’t ask for a better dentist. The staff treats Tairracha like everything is normal, which is perfect when you have a special needs child.”

“The boys love Dr. Khan - they’re always happy to be there. They don’t even

mind waiting for their appointment because it is such a beautiful office,” Jose Salinas says. “Dr. Khan is very gentle with kids. The kids just love him, and that’s the most important thing.”

The Williams Family

“I want to go to Allie’s dentist,” mom Katrina Williams says. “I haven’t had great experiences at the dentist, but everyone at Grand Parkway Pediatric, from the time we walked in through the time we left, was so personal, helpful, and pleasant. It’s like a Pixar movie in there! And we were in and out in an hour with the cleaning and the procedure. It all went smoothly, quickly, and painlessly.”

Upscale and Friendly Japanese Fare

in the Heart of Fort Bend

ith 37 nieces and nephews, the Beyers know a thing or two about family. So when they say Umami Japanese Restaurant treats them like family, you can rest assured they know exactly what they’re talking about.

“They always save our table in the corner by the window for us. We come in about once a week and bring friends often,” says Suzie Beyer. Her husband of 26 years, Vernon, adds, “The owner, the chef, the servers – they all treat us like family.”

Owner Jennifer Park explains, “Suzie and Vernon are some of our first regular customers, who started dining with us in 2021. Our chefs, who have been with us since we opened, perfectly curate our sushi and hot dishes. All of our food is made fresh to order.”

“The food is better than a lot of restaurants in Houston, with great quality and service, and it’s so convenient to where we live,” Suzie says.

Though the Beyers only live about 10 minutes away – “I don’t have to drive through any traffic signals to get here,” Vernon says – they would drive further to get Umami’s fresh food. “It’s so unique to have a restaurant like this in the suburbs. It’s upscale, but friendly,” Suzie says. Vernon adds, “To get something equal, you would have to make a reservation and drive 45 minutes into town. Umami isn’t stuffy compared to what you find in Houston.”

She and Vernon both love the O Toro Tuna on crispy fried rice, as well as the Sashimi Salmon with dill and citrus. “It’s simple, but it’s just delicious,” Suzie explains.

The O Toro is Umami’s most popular sushi, using the fattiest belly part of Spanish bluefin tuna. Diners also love the Pink Lady roll with spicy tuna, cilantro, Japanese yellowtail, serrano peppers, and citrus ponzu.

“I don’t eat red meat often,” Suzie says, “but Umami’s Wagyu filet mignon with mashed potatoes and garlic asparagus is amazing. We always start with garlic edamame and really enjoy the fried shrimp tempura.”

Residents of Missouri City with two children, Jennifer and her husband, Jin, agree, “We’re in a great community for raising our children. Umami is just a family-owned, local business offering casual fine dining in your neighborhood. You can come in shorts, but still feel like you’re dining in an upscale, downtown restaurant.”

HEARING THE JOY OF THE GRANDKIDS Again

Asimple postcard in the mail made Ruben Solano wonder if it was time to have his hearing checked. Recently retired from a job in manufacturing – “We made 60,000 cheesecakes every day!” – Ruben realized he had the TV at a high volume and wasn’t hearing his wife as well as he wanted to. “A pastor once told us, ‘God gave us two ears and one mouth. We should listen twice as much as we talk.’ I took that to heart and decided to visit Hear Again America.”

Married 47 years with two grown children and six grandchildren, Ruben credits his new hearing aids with enhancing his life in ways he never thought about. “Hearing is a very important part of life. For safety, of course, but also, listening to the joy of my grandkids is amazing,” he “And hearing is also very important my marriage. My wife likes the that I can hear her again. I made healthy investment for my life.”

Todd Ely handles evaluations and hearing aid selection for the company. “When I learned that Todd has hearing aids himself, and his dad has hearing aids, I realized that he understands what I’m going through,” Ruben

continues. “The testing he completed was painless, easy, and thorough.”

Did you know that untreated hearing loss can lead to a decline in brain processing

abilities related to sound, making it harder to adapt to hearing aids later on? “The science behind hearing loss, which Todd explained to me, is what helped me make the decision to get hearing aids now, before my hearing deteriorated further,” Ruben explains.

Todd helped Ruben evaluate several different types of hearing aids that would work best for his situation.

“I picked the Bluetooth option. I love being able to watch videos on my phone with the sound coming straight into my ears. But it got me into a bit of trouble with my wife,” he laughs. “I had to learn how to turn that feature off so I could listen when I needed to.”

Using Weight Loss Medications the RIGHT Way

Dr. Adeel Qureshi, of Fulshear Family Medicine in Sugar Land, has seen the number of patients seeking weight loss medications increase significantly over the last year. “People are looking for a bit of extra help maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle,” Dr. Qureshi says. “I am dedicated to providing the proper guidance for taking weight loss medications like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide.”

Partnering with a qualified healthcare provider is vital. “I’m certified in weight loss treatments and medications, so I understand the importance of monitoring these programs for maximum benefit and safety,” Dr. Qureshi continues. “Before we prescribe the medication, we conduct

a detailed questionnaire to learn about medications the patient already takes, their personal medical history, and their family history.”

Patients using weight-loss therapies are monitored closely by Dr. Qureshi and his team to be sure they are not having any severe side effects. “We run EKGs and monitor thyroid, kidney, and liver function with blood work, on a case-by-case basis.”

“Our goal is to expand access to primary care in a setting driven by independent physicians. We stress preventive care and focus on lowering the cost of care for our patients,” says owner and clinical director of Fulshear Family Medicine, Dr. Anisha Waxali. “We are proud to serve families in our Sugar Land community with same-day appointments.”

Dr. Qureshi has an esteemed track record as a board-certified family physician dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare for multiple family members. “My focus is on preventive screenings and effective management of chronic conditions,” Dr. Qureshi explains. “With medications like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide, we’ve seen patients lose up to 80 lbs. in 18 months. Patients can experience tremendous progress when they take these medications properly, with appropriate monitoring, and nutrition and fitness counseling.”

The practice even works closely with

several local compounding pharmacies who create medication to specifically meet the needs of each individual patient. “This is especially important for patients whose insurance does not cover the medication,” Dr. Qureshi says. “And sometimes, people can’t do injections, which is the normal delivery method, so we can also provide pills or gummies for patients with these restrictions.”

Fulshear Family Medicine accepts most major private insurance plans, as well as Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Marketplace. They offer online appointment scheduling, or you can call them at 281-491-0094 to hear a friendly voice, who will schedule you right away.

Watch for these Possible Leaks in Your Home

No one wants unwanted water in their home. But if there’s such a thing as a “good leak,” it’s the leak that you prevent before it ever happens.”

Alan Burkhalter, founder of local Alan’s Plumbing, says, “Your air conditioner’s condensate line is a good example. Condensate (liquid waste) from your air-cooling coils, air washers, evaporative coolers – any water-supplied equipment – is actually a plumbing (not an HVAC) matter. This liquid has to be collected and discharged using an approved plumbing fixture made of corrosion-resistant material. If the condensate line becomes clogged, it’s most likely either mold and mildew growing inside or dirt and debris. The most obvious sign of a condensate line leak is the appearance of water around your cooling system’s indoor system. Not sure where to look? Give us a call and we can walk you through it. And if the line is clogged, we’ll come out to clear it for you.”

“Another issue we see far too often,” says Alan, “is flooding of houses built with galvanized pipes. Galvanized pipe was the standard in homes built before 1980. With these pipes, it’s not if it’s going to leak, it’s when. They start with slow leaks...and before you know it, they’ve caused damage. Good news is, you don’t have to wait for damage to occur to remedy this problem. We can repipe your house, installing new PEX pipe on all of your supply lines. PEX pipe is made from cross-linked HDPE (high density polyethylene). We haul away all galvanized pipe removed from your home. And, as always, whether we replace your fixtures or not, every supply line valve is changed and every toilet is rebuilt. For every job we do, our aim is to leave everything in perfect working condition.”

For nearly 30 years, Alan’s Plumbing has been the go-to, honest, licensed plumbing company here in Fort Bend. Back in the beginning, the team consisted of only Alan and

his wife Jennifer. Jennifer answered the calls, and Alan provided service for those calls. Today, Alan’s brother Chris works alongside Alan’s two oldest sons, Beau and Luke, while their youngest son, Jake, does plumbing sales in Houston. The team includes longtime plumbers Jaime, Christian, and Anthony and apprentices Nick, Noah, PJ, and David, with Jennifer running the back office and their always-reliable family friend Katie, and Katy (with a ‘Y’) as the voice behind the phones.

Synapse PsychiatryFills a Gap in the Community

“My lifelong plan is to help people in my community improve their mental health,” says Sherry Grogan, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). A former school nurse for FBISD, Sherry says, “School nurses play a vital role in early identification of mental health disorders and emotional distress. The school nurse is a first point of contact, a safe place to express suffering. Adolescent years are challenging at best –depression, anxiety, attention and impulse problems, substance use issues, social media, and video-gaming addiction can make life very difficult.”

“When I was a school nurse, there were very few psychiatrists that would work with people under the age of 18,” Sherry continues. “This left children vulnerable. I wanted to fill that void.”

Sherry enrolled in a rigorous graduate school specializing in psychiatric care and earned her PMHNP degree. She opened Synapse Psychiatry in 2020. “As PMHNPs, we do thorough assessments, make diagnoses, and develop treatment plans. We specialize in medications to keep brain chemicals in balance, and educate about lifestyle and supportive psychotherapy,” she explains. Her dream became a brick-and-mortar clinic for mental health assessment, education, and treatment for people of all ages.

“We really try to connect with our patients to see who they really are,” says Amy Owens Horelica, PMHNP. “It is a very personal relationship – I don’t

look at my patients as a diagnosis. I like to address my patients holistically.” With a blended family three sons and one daughter, Amy brings family experience into her work.

Practicing beside Sherry and Amy is Ashley Bednorz, PMHNP. “Our practice is great at getting to know the person as a whole, learning about family life and history,” she says. With a husband three-month-old baby boy at home, “I just think, how would I want my family members treated.”

“Our role is offering additional support for families and even educational systems,” she continues. want people to feel comfortable enough to openly share what they’re going through. Sherry has done great job making it very peaceful here.”

Psychiatric NP Vita Chung and psychologist Jennifer Reck-Gordy, who provides psychotherapy, round out the Synapse practitioners. “We accept most commercial insurance plans, Medicare, some Medicaid plans,” Sherry says. “We prefer face-to-face visits initially, but offer telepsychiatry appointments as indicated for follow-up care.”

Amy, Ashley, and the Synapse team are accepting new patients, ages six to 100. Make an appointment today to experience the professionalism knowledge at Synapse Psychiatry. “Anyone going through a stressful time, who is feeling down, unmotivated, or anxious, we give them a place to start healing,” Ashley concludes.

Speeds Purchases Auto Process Streamlined

We all know how exciting … and stressful buying a car can be. You make plans to spend the entire day at the dealership finding the perfect vehicle, negotiating price, and completing the paperwork.

No more spending the whole day at Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land. The dealership has streamlined the purchase process to make it faster and easier for its customers.

“We added an additional finance manager and implemented new technology to speed the purchase process,” says Tony Gomez, general sales manager of Classic Chevy. “We also opened our used car building to eliminate any bottlenecks on the showroom floor, and we’re selling more used cars than ever before!”

Aaron Strand, Classic’s Corvette manager says, “We make it easier, more direct, and more customer-friendly to buy a car at Classic Chevy. We are here to help you find the car you want and facilitate the paperwork to get you in and out as quickly as possible. Buying a new car is supposed to be a fun process, and buyers shouldn’t have to spend all day in the dealership to do it.”

“It’s our job to gather the information from the customer, then use our knowledge to find three or four vehicles on the lot that fit their needs,” Aaron explains. “We have 1,800 pieces of inventory on our lot, so our customers have choices. But if we do the legwork together ahead of time, your salesperson can have the choice narrowed down before you even walk in the door.”

Technology has contributed to a streamlined process – it allows customers to work with the sales team and do the legwork from the comfort of their own homes. “If they call or text ahead after seeing something on our website, we can select the vehicle and set pricing before they even arrive,” Aaron continues. “We can have the car pulled up and ready for the salesperson to pass off the keys once the paperwork is signed.”

Aaron has been in the car business for 23 years. “I’m now selling to generations in the same family,” he says. “Many of my customers have become good friends – and customers for life. I always make myself available to the customer after the sale, too.”

“Customers may purchase a new car every three to five years, but I do it five times a day. We at the dealership want it all to go just as smoothly and quickly as the customer wants it to go!” Aaron adds. “So, we’re always refining the process.”

Get your car purchase started today with the experienced salespeople at Classic Chevy. “Don’t go down the rabbit hole by yourself,” Aaron concludes. “Use our expertise to help make your experience quick and painless.”

After living more than 25 years in her Missouri City home, Esther made the decision to make a big upgrade. “It was time to update the kitchen. It was original to the house and nothing worked right,” Esther says. “I didn’t want my house to look like everyone else’s … I didn’t want the black and gray that everyone is using in kitchens right now.”

To achieve her goal, Esther called the Re-Modelista, Teri Gilberg. “Teri is so easy to work with,” Esther explains. “She wants to make everything perfect for her clients. She even connected me with her designer, who had so many good ideas.”

With the designer’s help, Esther chose a light and airy aesthetic, with painted white cabinets, light Quartz countertops, and a floral mosaic backsplash of tans, grays, and white. Anchored by white plank tile and light tan walls, the island no longer holds the old electric cooktop – it has one long, sleek countertop with tons of cabinet storage below. “I love having all the counter space on the island now. And I’m so happy to have a new gas range to cook with,” Esther says. “I also love the new coffee bar we added at the end of the counter.”

“My favorite part is something that was so simple and seems so minor, but it has changed the way I work in the kitchen,” Esther says. “Teri added a second door to my pantry to open it up and make everything more accessible.”

In addition to the kitchen, Teri’s team updated the fireplace surround from the original brown tile to a more upscale, elegant look with white and brown marbled tile to blend with the tones of the wood floors. With candles burning inside, it gives a beautiful glow to the comfortable living area.

“Teri was so accommodating. I have asthma and during the tear-out I had an attack,” Ester explains. “Teri sent a cleaning crew to immediately clean up the dust, and then brought them back at the end of the project to be sure everything was clean for me.”

The month-long project was completed in mid-December, just

in time for Esther to celebrate Christmas in new kitchen with her family. “I had about people here – kids, grandkids, and a bunch of friends. I loved working in my brandnew kitchen,” Esther says.

Esther is already thinking of her next project. “I will definitely call Teri again when I’m ready to update my master bathroom,” she explains. “She and her crew are always on top of everything. She is the best person by far that I’ve ever had working at my home. It’s all about making the cus tomer happy.”
