A college annual represents one phase of a student's progress during the unforgettable experience of college life. As The Tower of 1956 presents a graphic account of what comprises the Westbrook Way, it is encumbent that this annual be dedicated to one who himself is part of the Westbrook Way. Through your friendly and congenial manner, Mr. Gridley, you have enabled us, the Westbrook girls, tc enjoy and never forget some of the "best years of our lives." Westbrook thanks you by way of this dedication for your contributions to the Westbrook Way. Westbrook honors you as you have honored Westbrook by way of service through instruction in class, and in informal groups. We wish to add to this presentation of our thanks the sincerest of wishes for the fulfillment of your life through further success and happiness.

The Day-Hops were a big group this year — the largest yet — and w h a t a " f u n " year w e had! Eating out was the fashion when w e didn't have pizza around the fireplace. President Nancy and those Wednesday meetings with Betty, our veep, Carole keeping the records, and Pat taking in the money w e r e quite an experience. The male problem has been solved by Gail — best wishes! Our pinned girls, Anne, Donna, and Nancy, and others who worked on Bowdoin, Colby, Maine, Dartmouth. Katy, Judy, and Rae spoke for us at student council meetings while Marilyn, Gail, and Diane were our J.D.'s. Remember that great Farm Trip? — more spaghetti, Mr. Gridley? W e Deeringites did it up brown this year, winning the Halloween Skits and Interhouse Basketball plaques, thanks to our athletes, Freddie, Sue, Jane, Sue, Nancy, and Karlene and her B-Bop. W e had loads of pins this year, too — Rita, Barb, J.P., Lambie, M a r y Anne, and Kathy. How our Mrs. Emery stood the Bowdoin bull sessions we'll never know. Mickey did the honors for student council, and our J.D.'s Ellie and Ann keep the ball rolling. Janie, Sue, Rita, and Lynn made up that money-making quartet — and Christie and Sue played the ponies! "Get up, Peg!" — those 8:20 classes really got her. Remember Dad's weekend? and that volleyball game. Deering House and Westbrook — we'll never forget them — it's been real!!

Twenty-four young women lived in close harmony at Goddard — well, at least things went smoothly when all animals, clothes, and other belongings were in their proper places. Miss Putnam and Miss Littlefield, along with our house officers — and Barb Thompson on Student Council showed us the w a y this year. We'll always have memories of the dull evenings when a journey to the cemetery perked things up, as well as the many parties, Janefs tropical garden, and especially our Maine Maritime and Bowdoin supporters. Mail call wouldn't be mail call if Pete, Joanie, Joy, and Millie weren't included. Remember Sue and how she loved sports cars? and just how did Deb-Deb look fresh as a daisy after late hours? It's Goddard for us — this has been "the" year.

The Hersey girls are overflowing with memories of the past year. We placed second in the Halloween Skits and showed well in Interhouse Basketball — but who can forget how our third floor reducers ate pizza, or the many fourth floor parties plus all that singing in the smokers! Sylvia's the lone engaged girl so far. Hersey meant talent this year with the voices of Joan and Barbara, Kip's dancing, Ricky's nimble fingers and our actresses. Talent was well shown by our leaders, too: Sally, our president; her vice president, B. J.; secretary, Diane; and treasurer, Randy. Who will ever forget Miss Giroux, Miss Gendron, and Mrs. Scott. Thanks to them, to our officers, and to M a r y Jane, our Student Council representative — Hersey has had a wonderful time this year.

It's been great at Melville this year, even with Pris' fire drills at just anytime . . . and Beth's clowning. Kibbie and Sonja joined in for the phone calls and the parties for our housemothers. Our Christmas party for the Boy's Home was a touching experience â&#x20AC;&#x201D; thanks to our officers: Judie Skofield, President, Sylvia Josselyn, Secretary-Treasurer. W e certainly will miss Melville and Linda's nine-cent letters, Jo's regular weekend trips to Gloucester, and Hope's loyalty to the Maine Maritime Academy. The midnight song sessions will still echo through the halls of Proctor long after June has come and gone. W e can point with pride to a wonderful year, thanks to prexy Jane Genthner, her veep Celia Crie, and to Marcia Barnes and Nan Hosmer for holding up the "minutes-and-money" end. Under the leadership of these officers and the guidance of Miss Merriman, Dean Howes, Miss Eveleth, and our "company housemother", Miss Giroux, 1955-1956 has been a memorable year. Dede Mayer served us on the student council, while our basketball go-getters showed up great in Interhouse competition. Telephone stampedes and all â&#x20AC;&#x201D; 1955-56 has been grand for Proctor.

The sports program at Westbrook Junior offers a varied group of activities for the Westbrook girl — field hockey, basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, ping pong, riding, swimming — and bowling. The sports program at the college is well suited to all the Westbrook Family. In competitive sports, the hockey and basketball teams travel as far as Colby Junior College to play for Westbrook. Sports activities come to a climax in February with the annual Winter Carnival. During that weekend, the Senior who, for two years, has been most outstanding in sports and associated activities reigns as Carnival Queen. Queen Freddie Cummings did the honors in 1956. Interhouse competitive sports of volleyball and basketball find our girls playing hard and playing well, each house in hopes of capturing the coveted plaques — treasured additions to any smoker. Sports and Westbrook go hand-in-hand — it's part of the Westbrook W a y !

The theme for Winter Carnival this year was "Dream with Disney", planned chiefly by the W. A. A. under the able guidance of Miss Martha Pratt. The name for the Winter Carnival Ball was "Enchanted Evening", held at the Eastland Hotel Ballroom. M a n y thanks to the decoration committee who elaborately trimmed the hall, and to everyone else who helped make the weekend a grand success. During the past year, the W . A. A. sponsored bowling teams, roller skating parties, trips to the f a r m , play-days, and other exciting activities. W. A. Sue Brent, a senior, p l a y i n g her first Hockey, has certainly been the most i m p r o v e d player on the f i e l d . In offensive positions, Jane McKenzie a n d Joan M o r g a n as inners d i d a great deal of the b a l l c a r r y i n g a n d passing, setting up the center f o r w a r d for scoring. Sue Smith, center f o r w a r d , carried the scoring load this season. A pat on the back must also be g i v e n to this year's t w o goalies, N a n Leacy, as No. 1 Varsity g o a l i e , a n d C. Their w i n s w e r e over Thornton A c a d e m y 53-40, A l u m n a e 37-18, Nasson College 45-27, Fryeburg A c a d e m y 76-30, a n d South Portland 55-54. They lost to Husson College 38-82, Peering High 50-52, a n d the University of N e w Hampshire 6 6 - 7 1 . A challenge game of students

vs. faculty set the stage for some excellent competition, each house setting its sights on the Interhouse Plaque. With the season well on its w a y , two houses were battling for first place, continuing right to the finish. Peering, the Senior contender, and Proctor, the Freshman, provided an exciting game until Peering showed its terrific ability in team play.

In spite of a third quarter rally, Proctor

became another victim of Peering House â&#x20AC;&#x201D; tops in the Interhouse Tournament. Roberta Taber, basketball manager, set up the rotation schedule and kept the games running smoothly. M a n y thanks also go to the student officials who did a grand job refereeing all the games.

All students of Westbrook Junior College are members of the Student Government, and the Student Council as the body of elected students representing all students in college legislative matters. The 1955-56 Student Council established as a Westbrook tradition Dad's Weekend at Halloween time, incorporating with those activities the successful Student-Faculty Auction of Services. The Council wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the fathers for their gift of money. To start the celebration of W . J. C.'s 125th year, an Anniversary Convocation was presented by the Council on March 5, the anniversary of the charter signing. Dr. Payson Smith, well-known educator, was the speaker. Maturity, friendliness, love and respect for her college are but a f e w of the qualifications of a Junior Dean. One of the best definitions of a Jay-Dee is, "A girl who exemplifies and lives â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the Westbrook W a y . " Advised by Dean Frank E. Hobson, the Jay-Dees act as intermediaries between the Faculty and students. They also serve as campus guides for prospective students and guests. The organization, which started in 1952, assists the administration in all capacities during Freshmen Orientation Week and later conducts the traditional Candlelight Service. This year the Junior Deans sponsored a series of lectures, one of the highlights being Rear Admiral Donald B. MacMillan's address-film-showing in Moulton Chapel on October 25. The Glee Club, directed by Mr. Marshall Bryant and accompanied by Miss Katherine Merk, maintained an active schedule during the year 1955-1956. Highlighting the year was the singing of Handel's "Messiah" together with several Portland choruses in December. The girls also displayed their talent for different clubs in the Portland area. As a special part of the Anniversary Convocation in March the Glee Club sang an old song of the college, "The Old Bell Of Westbrook". In April, the Westbrook Glee Club joined with the University of New Hampshire men's chorus in a spring concert. As a part of M a y Weekend, the Westbrook singers presented a concert from the Proctor Hall stairway. The club successfully sponsored the observance of United Nations Day, held on the Westbrook Campus for the benefit of the Greater Portland area. The twenty members of the club with their competent advisors W . Gregor Macfarlan and Daniel P. Dacey also held coffee-pot discussions and a successful dance. The 1955-56 officers were President, Irene Valerio; Vice-President, Etta Fechner; Recording Secretary, Gail Kelly; Corresponding Secretary, Pauline Lessard; Treasurer, Lauralee Perkins. The club also sponsors a high school forum composed of N e w England high school students and directed by Westbrook Junior College students. This year the I. R. C. joined the Association of International Relations Club and gave a midterm and final popular movie. The members presented a minstrel show in April.

A new standard was set this year for the editions of the MARGRAY. A concerted effort was made by the staff in the hopes that unnecessary mistakes such as the mispelling of names, typographical errors and the like might be prevented in the monthly issues of the college newspaper. Three of the new features introduced in the 1955-56 MARGRAY were a fashion column, a student opinion questionnaire, and candid snapshots with each dorm's house news. The MARGRAY, under tAr. Gridley's supervision, was headed by Judie Skofield as Editor-in-Chief. Under the brilliant and sincere direction of Miss M a r y Lee Haugum, the Masque and Candle had a full and successful year once a g a i n . It is to Miss Haugum that the Club extends its deepest gratitude and rightful admiration for her guidance and penetrating appreciation of the theater arts. In the fall, P. J. C. joined with the club in presenting two one-act plays. The Christmas Nativity pageant was another success. 1955-1956 saw these and many other professional shows of talent and ability in such presentations as the Freshman-Senior Competition Plays, and the spring play, "Quality Street". Socially, the club dance meant an enjoyable event. The lucky and hard-working members of the Masque and Candle received their keys at the spring banquet. Thanks to Jane McKenzie, President and all the other officers and members, Westbrook was able to attend many a stage performance of highest caliber â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that's the theater â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that's Masque and Candle.

Not many

girls — and faculty — missed the Farm trips, mountain-climbing, ski movies, and the outdoor cook-out. A program of sports movies in general plus guest speakers rounded out the year — but don't that the Outing Club teamed with W . A. A. in sponsoring "Dream With Disney"! Throughout the year, the club has planned many lectures, films, and guest appearances of outstanding personalities in the Medical Field. In the spring, Science Club members plan their annual trip to the Medical Institute in Boston and to a current play. This year with the help and assistance of the club advisors: tAr. The S. R. A. sponsored its annual dance in the early fall. "Painter's Paradise" caried out the theme of modern art with Pam Jessop in charge of decorations and Nancy Boyajian as general chairman for the affair. Joint coffee-pot discussions were held periodically during the year with the I. R. C. This project was carried out cooperatively between the two clubs for the benefit of all members of the organizations. The. S. R. A. was represented in the fall by a delegation which attended the Maine Fall Conference of The Student Christian Movement in New England. This conference was held at Colby College.
