Many people erroneously believe that this is a misspelling of petrel blue, and that the term refers to the sea bird However, the OED gives only this spelling The term may originally have pertained to petrol-derived compounds such as paraffin, which is often coloured blue.

Swirling Swifts
After a journey from afar, all the way from Africa, The swifts swoop, glide and even do a loop the loop. They screech their high pitch scream to let us know they are there, There in the clear blue sky.

Ultramarine
Often referred to as ‘true blue’, the brilliant deep-blue Ultramarine pigment is beloved by artists. Its name derives from the combination of Latin for ‘ultra’, meaning beyond, and ‘mare’, meaning sea, referring to Europeans having imported the stone over the seas from Asia.

Blue crashing rolling waves, Blue skies, where the birds rave.

There is also the lovely blue jay who sometimes flaunts a rather aggressive display
