Inspired by Music
The idea came as I was listening to music in my car when I realised that what happens to me as I listen to any music is I see colours, shapes, textures that swirl around. So I decided to make a panel of work based on the images in my head.
The work you see in this book took me almost 4 years to make. Some of the model shots were the first elements captured, but because I needed different models for the various pieces of music it meant booking them and studios to shoot in. Some backgrounds were also shot specifically, whereas others already existed in my library of images. Every individual element of every image is entirely made from photos I have taken and then woven together in Photoshop.

Inspired by MusicWhen you submit panels of work at this level you have to have an accompanying Statement of Intent (SoI) - in others words what inspired me to do this work and what was my intention. This guides the Assessors in how they view the work.
Because all three organisations to whom the work was submitted have slightly differing criteria I am going to use the SoI that was used for the IPF.
Each of the three panels also had different layouts and slightly different images. Therefore this book contains all the individual images that appeared in one or other of the panels that went to either the Photographic Society of America (PSA), the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) and the Iirish Photographic Federation (IPF).
Inspired by Music - Statement of IntentWhen
I hear music, whether a song or an instrumental, in my head I see colours, shapes, textures and images swirling around, but given my own individual interpretation. This is very much about how I 'see' the music. This inspired me to challenge myself to do a panel of work exploring and illustrating my personal musical visions.
I selected a variety of music including light opera, classical, jazz and pop: Some gentle and some dramatic pieces. Immersing myself in the various pieces I formulated my 'vision', which I then discussed with my female models who are substituting for me in these visions. We talked about the look and expression I was trying to portray, playing the music as we worked together to assist us both to create my interpretation. Additional backgrounds, textural images and various elements had to be shot as appropriate to each image.
