Suzy Courtnage got some lovely light at the St. Martha’s and Newlands Corner walk

Following the initial talk by Paul Mitchell FRPS, 52 walks took place across the UK mainland; in addition participants on Scottish islands and outside UK did solo walks.

Participants participated in discussions following each walk, or in groups from the islands and outside UK.

Each group selected an image (or two for bigger groups) to contribute to this publication.

People in Woodlands

Lynn Middleton-Flynn gave us an impression of her site in ‘Walk in the Woods’ at Bovey Tracey.
‘A walk in the Forest’ by Paul Farrow in Dunwich Forest

Creative Techniques

Sheppard found some incredible colours in the Mendip Hills, and we get the feel it was windy when Manuel

Helen
Brieske visited the West Woods of Ethie.

David Saunders made ‘Woodland Trails’ in the Forest of Dean, and Astrid Preise created ‘Fairy

Tales’ in Austria.

Mairi Macaulay has captured the essence of the birch wood at Kincraig, as did Gary Dean at Holme Fen in his ‘Rhythms of the Wood’

Monochrome Images

Kevin Goodwin created ‘Softly this Way’ at St. Martha’s and Newlands Corner, whilst Anthony Ashcroft found some lovely light seeping through the canopy at Eglinton Country Park
Lois Wakeman and Nik Taylor took very different approached to the vegetation in White Wood and Venford forestry and Uffmoor woods.

Ed Bylina picked out the architectural element at Hardcastle crags, and ‘Morning Mystery ‘ by Nina Noordzij certainly makes me wonder where the mysterious spot is.

Textural approaches suited the scenes at Blackwater Arboretum and The Outwoods for Martin Farrow and Howard Fisher.

In Dunwich Forest did Nigel Ladkin want us to think about what lay beyond the twigs in his ‘The Space Between’ whilst Jo Shepherd was thinking about the end for one of the forest giants in the Forest of Dean.

Jayne Ferguson gave us ‘Sentinel’ from the West Woods of Ethie

Small scenes

Tracy Ross’ perfect specimen from Eglinton contrasts well with the intriguing decaying specimen spotted by Valerie Jenkins.
Derek Winsor was looking up at Pulborough, whilst at Bacton Woods Mike Harris was looking down!

Some recently nibbled fungi caught the attention of Graeme Reynolds.in Willingham woods, complimenting Wendy Lamb’s

‘Button Cluster on Oak’
At Croft Castle Parkland and Woodland - Kevin Williams found a fly visiting this large fungus, contrasting with a more delicate group which caught the eye of Ian Foster at Sowdley Wood and Clunton Coppice.

Two of the East Midlands groups took very different views of their walks. In Willingham Woods Peter Roworth portrayed thick forest whilst at Conkers and Moira Howard Fisher gave us a more minimal view.

Lots of participants concentrated on foliage colours. Viv Cotton gave us an intriguing composition of evergreen climbers and fallen leaves at Roslin Glen, and Paul Bather picked a beautiful leaf in Sheffield Park.

Mike Farrance was sensible to go for low level images during Storm Ashley are Arbigland gardens, and the acer colours also attracted Brian Flemming at Maspie Den.

I wonder what creature put that nut for Margaret Ridgewell to find in the Outwoods?

John Hadwick was interested in ‘The Stream’ at Croft Castle Parkland and Woodland.

Bridget Davies and Geoff Smith both enjoyed looking skywards at Lanhydrock Estate and Respryn Woods and Lytham Hall.
Andy Jones clearly enjoyed reflecting on autumn in the New Forest, whilst at Castle Fraser Woodland Dave Lynch created ‘Autumnal Intersection ‘

Nice to see an unusual

view of Burnham Beeches by Brian Connolly, and at Thrunton Woods Eddie Middleton summed up the coming of autumn with this fallen leaf.

Patterns in nature were the order of the day for at Castle Fraser Woodland giving us ‘Water Webbed’ by Jacqueline Riach; and for Howard Fisher at Clumber Park.

Jackie Fisher found some remaining blooms at Clumber Park; and at Slieau Whallian Plantation Dorothy Flint created ‘Woods End’

Clearly it wasn’t a windy day at Eartham when Martin Tomes gave us ‘Broken Fall’, or when Andy Webber called at Thorncombe Woods

Larger Scenes

Maureen Smith found some fabulous colour in Borrowdale as did Stuart Knight in Mortimer Forest.
Steve Hartley got great light in Thorncombe Woods, as did Ken Biggs in Nutwith Woods.

We hope that James Frost was watching out for any soldiers leaping at Killicrankie! And Richard Brooks may have spotted the fall at Falling Conkers and Moira Junction, explaining the ripples.

Borrowdale is hard to beat in autumn as Nicola Robley demonstrated, but Hardcastle crags must come close (picture by Ken Rolatt)

Mortimer Forest was illustrated with less vibrant shades by Harry Webb, whilst at Carrafran it stopped raining long enough for Jean Robson to snap a view before heading back to Pete Birrell’s campervan for a very welcome brew!

John Evans-Jones was very lucky with the mist at Lanhydrock Estate and Respryn Woods, and the North South divide for our walks is clear in ‘The Gate’ by Janet Downes from Bovey Tracey.
At Ferndown Forest ‘Morning Glory’ was found by Judy Cochant and at Firestone Copse Chuck Eccleston peaked out of the forest.

At Bolehill Quarry the colours were just changing when Matt Horstwood visited, as they were for Jeremy Stock at Eartham

Madeleine Lenagh in the Netherlands and Paul Withers at Bernwood Forest tool very different approaches.

still very

The leaves were
fresh looking when Paul Hood visited Allen Banks and Roger Harvey the Mendips.
At Edge Barton Upon Humber both John Rutherford and Stewart Wall (later in the day) chose to look out of the woods at the bridge.
White Wood and Venford forestry - ‘On the Boundary’ by Ian Clements
And to round off our tour of woodlands some lovely dappled light at Skipton Castle Woods Didier Clairet and for by Maureen Shearer at Bolehill Quarry.
