Google Drive Working With OďŹƒce Documents

Office Documents in Drive Google Drive will permit you to upload almost any file format. If you want to edit any of these files, they must be compatible with Google Docs. Before editing a document uploaded in another format other than Google Doc, it has to be converted to the Google Doc format.
In this example I have Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents.

I'll select the Daily Class Schedule.
When the More menu option appears, click on it, select Open with, and then select Google Docs.

Google Drive will convert your Word document into a Google Drive compatible document.
Once the document has been converted, you’ll see the familiar edit toolbar for the document.

This document is a copy of your original. Click on the Drive button to return to your Drive.
Back in the drive, you will see the original Word version and the converted Drive version.

To see your documents in list view, click on the Drive actions menu.
Select Drive from the menu options.

In the list view we again see the original and the Google Drive compatible version. Once you have the Google Drive version, I recommend deleting the other. The Google Drive version should be used when sharing and collaborating on documents.
The process is the same for the other Office document types. Keep in mind that if you are using special formatting in documents like special formulas in Excel or animations in PowerPoint, those don't always translate well when working with Google Drive.
