In Feb 2017 I received my Bachelor of Engineering in Architecture with GPA 3.52 out of 4.00 from Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. I am a passionate architect through my willingness to learn something new. Beside of my architecture academic background, i have gained my professional experience through working in small local practice and a well known architect studio in Jakarta. It helped and influenced me to establish my opinion on what kind of architecture I am interested in. And I believe my experience as a whole learning process. I combine my interest in technology, people, culture, psychology, and intention to respond context as my design process aproach . In my opinion, architecture is it context itself. Altough, we have to make something new, something better. My main drive to do architecture is that I believe architecture has a life-changing impact to make a better space, for better living. Not only impact on people, but also on communities. I belive it is essential for the building to be well designed through all the means but what is making it trully outstanding is building which responded to it context. People, nature, environtment, culture, social, economy. I believe it is true value its beneficial impact on local community. I attempt to make my architecture be valuable in that way.

AUTOTOMY Bamboo is an underestimated material but actually its strength is comparable to steel. If we treat bamboo properly, there are millions of possibility happened by using this material: 1. The local population will be involved as a part of construction process. 2. By building the village with their own hands, the locals will have the sense of belonging 3. The building designed to be easily assembled in a workforce mostly illiterate. 4. Bamboo is an extremely powerful material, but people keep underestimating it because of its image as the “poor man’s timber”. Other issue of this competition is ecotourism. Ecotourism has become one of the fastest-growing sectors of the tourism industry, growing annually by 10–15% worldwide. One definition of ecotourism is the practice of low-impact, educational, ecologically and culturally sensitive travel that benefits local communities and host countries. Unfortunately, the ecotourism practice has been shifted into a trend towards the commercialization of tourism schemes disguised as sustainable, nature based, and environmentally friendly ecotourism, blurring definition between the real eco-tourism and the pseudo one. These schemes are environmentally destructive, economically exploitative, and culturally insensitive at its worst. They are also morally disconcerting because they mislead tourists and manipulate their concerns towards the environment.

BANK INDONESIA PALANGKARAYA Indonesia is very well known for its forest. Getting nick names such as “paru-paru dunia” (the lungs of the world) making Indonesia part of International agenda of sustaining global environment. Earning such hyperbolic nick name isn’t a mere hoax either since Indonesia promised to contributes up to 45% of Borneo island in 2012. Bank Indonesia Palangkaraya located at the capital city of Central Borneo province. Tried to reach the high expectation, the design apply strategy such as: Using as minimum area as possible for the building and effectively manage its landscape while at the same time maintaining their own local identity and promoting modest and modern tropical architecture. The design adopt the philosophy of Huma Betang (Traditional house of Ingenious Dayak tribe in Central Borneo), bringing ideas of living in harmony and peace between people and the environment. The design doesn’t stop there, it also promotes the icon and re-interpretation of local symbolism such as Dayak shields geometry integrated as rhythms of the facade.

ENDLESS LOOP OF SEEKING FREEDOM The museum designed on a deconstructed manner— as the language of a “willingness to face naked facts” of the capitalism. Deconstructivism took a confrontational stance to architectural history, wanting to “disassemble” architecture. It is opposed the order and form is often deformed. The design deconstructs the archetype of the museum and renders its spaces and structure with conflict and difference; resulting the dissected forms and content, and viewed from different perspectives simultaneously. To exhibit each country potential, we are clustering the non-capitalist countries into ocean (rich of ocean and coastal resources) and land (rich of land and labor resources), while the proclaimed capitalist countries are in one group. The natural relation of each country and the museum expressed through vernacular. This vernacularization of each museum likewise rescues it from pure commodity by suggesting its organic, naturally evolving, and “naked” relationship to the user. Each museum will use local materials to reintroduce the varieties of domestic product and enhance its genius loci. The construction will benefit the local employment and equality of wealth distribution, and by any means, promote their construction knowledge. In addition, to connect the museum and its city context, the exhibition space orientated to the regionally acclaimed industrial, political, and social places.

EXPENDABLE CONTAINER HOUSE In the evolution of design world, architects are required to invent new innovations every time. The new innovation is used to solve problems that rush up parallel with development of the world. One of the innovations of evolution design world is a modular architecture method that evolve to prefabrication architecture. Prefabrication architecture has a several advantages such as sustainability, efficiency, and economical aspects. One of the example is using container as a modular aspect in design process. It called container architecture. Container that originally used for transportation, can be used as an alternative solution of urban problems, for supply a livable building that efficient, economic, and sustainable.

Bregada Hotel designed to respond with the existing context in Yogyakarta. Located on the main road of Jalan Mangkubumi, for that existing design should still pay attention to the features of existing area. Therefore the design of the facade floor 1 and 2 follow the guideline Mangkubumi area so that the existence of hotel bregada remain in harmony with the surrounding tread conditions but still can stand out. For that tower design is designed very different from the design characters around the site. This creates a contrast that remains unity with the surrounding environment.

In the process of completing this portfolio, I see myself as a person that still need to learn. Not only formal study but also a learn about life, about architecture. Because of that i promissed myself to always improving my skill and my personality, to be a better, and better person. Like John Maxwell said that “The greatest enemy of learning is knowing” , then I will always learn something like I haven’t know about that thing so I never be satisfied with what I have now. Thank you for reading my portfolio. Regards, Dika Ardi Irawan.
