Until about 1935, motorcyclists didn’t wear helmets – with tragic consequences. Seat belts in cars? It seems strange now, but they only became mandatory for the first time in 1970. Likewise, the neck brace is the most recent safety innovation that will hopefully become simple common sense. Leatt-Brace ®’s are lab-designed to fit most riders: young or old, amateur or professional, but most importantly, they’re built and tested to help lessen the risk of injury when riding. It’s just that simple. The Leatt® Lab, based in Cape Town, South Africa, is Leatt®’s home of research & development. Here dr. Leatt and his team of engineers and designers conceptualise and test new products and constantly strive to improve existing products even further. The facility features state-of-the-art testing and prototyping equipment that enables the team to take a product from conceptualization, through testing, all the way to pre-production prototypes. While the majority of Leatt®’s R&D gets done at the cape town facility, collaborations with global partners give our products an international flavour.

The philosophy of testing at Leatt® has been to develop test rigs and methods that allow comprehensive in-house testing and exploration of product performance. We believe that the 5.5 neck brace is truly the most technologically advanced neck brace in the world. The CE certified 5.5 neck brace balances the needs of comfort, effectiveness and safety by allowing greater freedom of movement and adjustment to more closely meet the needs of top level racers whilst Leatt®’s commitment to safety ensures that key safety features pioneered by Leatt® are built into each brace. The core of what makes our neck braces work is Alternative Load Path Technology (ALPT®) and for the ALPT to work optimally neck braces must fit correctly. The adjustability built into all Leatt® neck braces is not just for comfort, but to ensure a correct fit that assists in optimizing effectiveness of your neck brace. We believe that no other neck brace can be adjusted to fit riders as well as a Leatt®. The front and rear sliding SureFit adjusters can be set for your personal body shape, without tools, in less than 30 seconds. The brace can also be readjusted as necessary for growing kids or when worn with different apparel. To further optimize fit, the new and improved CoreFlex rear thoracic strut has an exclusive feature that allows it to be adjusted to 4 setting angles. This is done with a simple elastomeric bumper that can be set at 0, 5, 10 or 15 degrees in seconds. The 5.5 has lowered side areas, below the ear, that increases comfort and wearability, especially on kids, smaller statured riders and riders with shorter necks. A simple pop off shoulder pad that can raise or lower your brace to suit your neck length or helmet rim profiles. Both the front and the back feature has the new split design that promotes broader dissipation of energy transmitted to the body and have new molded padding for greater comfort. The semi-rigid chassis is flexible and adjustable enough to fit most riders’ body shape while the structure remains rigid enough to help transmit energy during an impact while multiple engineered fracture points and crumple zones will bend or break away at pre-determined stress levels to help contribute to a riders’ safety. The new and improved CoreFlex rear thoracic strut is more comfortable than ever and still has the engineered fracture point at the top that allows it to break away in certain severe impacts. If broken this strut can be purchased as a replacement part and easily changed out. In 2013 Leatt redesigned the best selling motorcycle neck brace in the world. So much so that we renamed what used to be the Club brace into what is now the Race. The chassis is still made from Leatt’s high impact polymer (LHIP) but the front has been completely re-sculpted using into a split front design that was pioneered by the Leatt STX brace from 2011. The split front design allows for independent movement of the two “wings’ for increased comfort and better fit. This “split” design criteria was also added in the redesign of the rear thoracic strut. An entirely new approach to further help prevent knee injuries. No knee brace can prevent all foreseeable knee injuries but Leatt® laboratory engineers and other medical professionals have come up with a radical design to help further reduce injuries over what traditional “cage type” knee brace designs can do. The main features of a new type of knee brace should include better comfort, lower profile under the boot, reduction/elimination of excessive forces put on the femur (thigh bone), reduction/elimination of rotational forces that damage knees even on knee brace users, better knee cap (patella) protection, bring the inside of the knee closer to the bike for better control, longer last hinge mechanism that better replicates the natural motions of the knee joint, The C-Frame knee brace is based on three point force distribution and has a super stiff mono hinge design for maximum force control. Having a single hinge, mounted towards the outside of the rider’s knee means the rider can better grip the bike with the inside of their knee. A comfortable, low profile shin bone plate replaces traditional arms for better comfort and better rotation control. This plate also allows riders with larger calf muscles to wear a knee brace for the first time. InteliLink hinge with double pivot points, BioLink hinge ligaments and sealed bearings inside better replicate natural knee motion and have a very long lifespan. Vented upper leg plates eliminate the narrowly focused sideways forces on the soft tissues of the thigh. This decreases sideways bending of the knee as well as helps reduce rotational forces. It also allows for better fitment on more shapes/sizes of legs without the need for expensive custom molds. Leatt® engineers also placed a comfortable CE impact certified protector onto a moisture wicking knee brace sock that is worn with the brace. Heat is the athlete’s enemy. Outside heat as well as excessive core heat, inside your body, can reduce athletic and mental performance. The Leatt® Pre-Cooling vest is designed to help keep your body cool, even reduce your standing body temperature, before you compete and allow you to cool down quicker after the event. Four Cool Pax™ inserts (two in the junior size) maintain a comfortable temperature of 58°F (or 14°C) for up to 3 hours. Because they “freeze” at 58°F you can activate them in a freezer, refrigerator or even in an ice chest, in just 45 minutes. Wearing the Pre-Cool Vest before an event keeps the athlete as fresh as possible up they are until ready to compete. Do not wear the vest during the competition! Then put the vest back on after the competition for quicker recovery. The fabric vest itself should be soaked a minimum of 2 minutes in cool water and helps cool the body through evaporation. The W.E.C. jacket is a water resistant, lightweight off road riding jacket with some heavy duty features. Leatt’s main concern in designing a jacket like this is the ability for it to integrate with neck braces yet still be comfortable and easy to wear. The collapsible, waterproof fabric, neck allows the rider to decide if they would like to cover up the neck brace and seal out the elements or leave the weather collar off the brace to allow a little more ventilation. If you don’t wear a neck brace at all, or if you want to wear the jacket casually, the collar rolls up neatly and is held down with elastic straps. The top front pocket is 100% waterproof to help protect your valuables. More than just great looking this jacket is a great performer.

If you have a flat / barrel shaped chest you can refer to the complete sizing chart at www.leatt.com. Chest measurement: measure just under the arms, across the fullest part of the chest, around the shoulder blades holding the tape firm and level If the chest measurement is on the borderline between two sizes, go to the higher size for a better fit. The chart is based on the fact that the brace will be worn directly on the body. If the brace will be worn with other protective gear this size change must be taken into consideration.
