How many of you have made a New Year’s resolution in the past and actually stuck to it?

Lose weight? Check. Start exercising? Check. Stop smoking? Check. Was it just the last of the pine needles beneath your feet or a real prick of conscience? Was it merely the tree’s angel going back into her box or has the spirit of our past year already fallen? Does it feel a little gloomy because the pretty lights have all gone out, or are the cold shadows cast by the January dawn exactly what will provoke in us the will to change things for the better. Unhealthy behaviours develop over the course of time. Replacing the ones we’re not so proud of also requires time. Don’t become overwhelmed and think that you have to reassess everything in your life. Instead, work toward changing one thing at a time.

The beginning of a week, a month, or a year forms what the psychologists have called a ‘notational boundary’, and with that, researchers suspect, comes a sense of optimism, the promise of ‘a new me’. Perhaps it is the novelty factor in the word ‘new’, but somehow many of us manage to quickly put the errors of the past behind us, by transforming it into a new sense of optimism for the future.

Don’t beat yourself up Perfection is unattainable. Remember that minor missteps on the path to reaching your goals are completely normal. Don’t give up completely because you ate a brownie and broke your diet, or skipped the gym for a week because you were busy. Everyone has ups and downs; resolve to recover from your mistakes and get back on track.

Nevertheless, that novelty appears to quickly wear off. Research indicates that a tiny eight per cent of New Year resolutions actually succeed! So, how can you shorten the odds of staying out of the betting shop, let cigarettes finally go up in a puff of smoke and increase the chances of actually keeping that excess weight off?

Team up with others who share your goal and make your resolution obvious

Optimism, however, isn’t always constructive. If we’re too positive, we condemn ourselves to fail. So if follows that, if you set more realistic goals, you are more likely to succeed. Make your resolutions realistic Make resolutions that you think you can keep. If, for example, your aim is to exercise more frequently, schedule three or four days a week at the gym instead of seven. If you would like to eat healthier, try replacing dessert with something else you enjoy, like fruit or yogurt, instead of seeing your diet as a form of punishment.

Research has also shown that sharing resolutions with family and friends, and also sharing your statement of intent with others, can help you succeed. It’s a way to build accountability into the mix; and in the era of social media this can be a readily accessible tool. Consider joining a support group to reach your goals, such as a workout class at your gym, or a group of co-workers quitting smoking. Having someone to share your struggles and successes with makes your journey to a healthier lifestyle that much easier and less intimidating. Jotting down what you stand to lose by breaking your resolve will help to remind you why you are trying to break a bad habit.

They can offer strategies as to how to adjust your goals so that they are attainable, as well as help you change unhealthy behaviours and address emotional issues. To conclude, here’s a New Year’s resolution anyone can keep: Resolve not to make any more New Year’s resolutions. Now, wasn’t that easy? You know in your own heart what you want to change and although now is often as good a time as ever, by not limiting yourself to a once-a-year, do-or-die, all-out assault on that Everest of debt, those flabby thighs, or the hideous wallpaper you keep meaning to replace, you may find that the finish line isn’t so far away after all.

Reader’s Letter I’ve been living in the village for 30 years, almost a local! As some of you will know I’ve been struggling with a heart condition for the last 20, having had my first heart attack as a 30 year old. Another two followed in the next decade and I now have several stents which have improved matters. I’ve been really grateful for the research that the BHF sponsor which has allowed me to enjoy a full life. To compound matters, however, I have struggled with weight for a long time. About 18 months ago I was diagnosed with type two diabetes having stopped taking any meaningful exercise while continuing to eat unhealthily. Diabetes and heart disease, not a good mix. So having already lost both mum and dad to heart disease, I finally decided to act and set myself two targets. Get my weight back to a manageable 14.5 stone and run a marathon. Not quite there although down by 7.5 stone and now have 2.5 marathons under my belt. To make the weight target I’ve decided to refine my marathon goal for 2015 with a sub 5-hour marathon being the new objective. To that end it’s on with the training for the London Marathon in April. The business was concluded with the addition of three new committee members and the resignation of one (June Coles) who was presented with a bouquet as thanks for her work over the last four years. Rhymetime and Storytime

The numbers of patients requiring ear syringing is increasing. As a result of this the amount of nurse time taken up to do this is limiting appointments being made available for other things.

Our popular Rhymetime event aimed at babies from 0-18 months restarts on Friday 9 January and runs every Friday from 10.30am to 11am.

Christians are sometimes accused of being ‘out of touch with the real world’ or ‘distanced from the problems experienced by everyday people’.

At St Peter’s we strongly believe that God is telling us to move outside of our traditional church building and Sunday services and take the message of Jesus into our wider community in very practical ways. Of course, this has been the purpose of the church over centuries.

One way we are doing this in Yaxley is by working with an organisation known as CAP (Christians Against Poverty), see www. capuk.org. The main purpose of this charity is to help anyone who is struggling with debt to become debt free. Another huge part of their work is around educating people to manage their money in order to avoid problems in the future. At St Peter’s we are planning to run a CAP Money Course in March this year. This course is for anyone and everyone who feels that managing to live within their budget is a challenge.

Although I have used the words ‘education’ and ‘course’, this is not about maths, there will be no tests. Just simple, straight talking, advice and information about creating and managing a household budget and dealing with the demands on your money.

January is a time when people often regret just how much they have spent on Christmas. Payday at the end of the month seems so far away and without careful handling of the situation this can easily become a problem throughout the rest of the year. If you feel that making ends meet, finding enough money for that school trip, new

The Queen knows more about Christmas then you or I do. We understand that the Queen insists that the Christmas decorations at Sandringham stay up until she leaves at the beginning of February. Right and proper I say. So many things in the churches year have 40 days in them. 40 days in Lent. 40 days between Easter and Ascension Day. So why not 40 days between Christmas and Candlemas. Yes Candlemas on 2 February is the turning point from looking back to the birth of the Baby Jesus to looking forward to Good Friday and Easter. So you see it truly is the end of the Christmas season not Twelth Night as we assume. That is the Feast of Epiphany, the arrival of the Three Wise Men but Christmas goes on. If you are having a party to celebrate Twelth Night, how about joining one of the churches that hold a Candlemas Service on [or near] 2 February. One such candlelit service will be held in St Giles Church, Holme at 4 pm on Sunday 1 February 2015. Everyone is welcome. Is your New Year’s resolution to exercise more? Ever thought your pet might benefit from more exercise too? 2015 is upon us and this is the time of year when many people think about starting a new exercise regime. Exercise can have more benefits that just the weight loss we seek after our festive over-indulgences; exercise helps our muscles and joints too. This is one of the many principles physiotherapy works with – if muscles and joints are flexible and strong they are healthier, less prone to injury and most importantly less painful. So why is a vet telling you about physiotherapy? A form of physiotherapy has been used on people for centuries but it wasn’t until around 35 years ago that the principles started to be applied to our pets. After all, animals are essentially made up of the same things we are, their bodies prone to problems and their joints susceptible to degeneration just like us. As physiotherapy exercise programmes help people, it can also help our ailing pets.

A huge range of conditions can be treated with physiotherapy and this time of year it’s the older pets who can really see the benefits. The New Year brings with it colder weather and this often makes life for those with arthritis more difficult as their joints become more painful and stiff. You may have noticed your older pet is sleeping more, maybe less willing to move around the house, perhaps slower walking. Physiotherapy for these patients focusses on pain relief and a functional exercise programme to get them more comfortable on their feet and enjoying life. One last thought, as many of us try to lose those extra pounds put on over Christmas, please think about your pet’s waistline too. Excessive weight puts more pressure on the entire body, and for the muscles and bones that means quicker degeneration. Even if your pet isn’t yet in need of the bespoke exercise programme physiotherapy can offer, regular exercise keeps them trim and protect their joints for the future.

Safe Local Trades raises over £6,720 for Age UK Peterborough During September and October each year, Peterborough-based Safe Local Trades organises fund-raising events for their chosen charity Age UK Peterborough. This year, there were several skydives organised and a team took part in the annual Great Eastern Run. All events were an overall success and the organiser, Eileen Le Voi, owner of Safe Local Trades, said: “We would like to thank each and every volunteer who took part as well as everyone who sponsored them in their events, all of which helped to raise an amazing £6,720.25 for this very worthy local charity.” Eileen went on to say, “We would particularly like to thank Axiom Housing Association for getting involved and helping to raise over £1,600. In addition to the skydives that two members of staff took part in, dozens of individual sheltered accommodation schemes raised money by having coffee mornings, quizzes, and the like – it shows great community spirit to know

that elderly people were raising money for their counterparts.” David Bache, Chief Executive of Age UK Peterborough, said, “We are so delighted with this excellent achievement by Eileen and the fabulous volunteers. This is the largest amount we have ever raised in one campaign so my sincere thanks go to Eileen Le Voi, Axiom Housing Association and all the wonderful volunteers who make such a difference to the work we do to help and support older people in Peterborough. “Over the past few years, Eileen and Safe Local Trades have helped raise over £25,000 – no other local company has ever raised this amount for our charity and we are enormously grateful.”

Across the whole school, we recently had an ‘E-safety week’. We were thinking about how to stay safe when using the internet. Children in each class made their own e-safety posters, which highlighted the key messages that they learnt during the week. We had an action-packed Children in Need day at Stilton! Children made a donation to come to school in non-uniform. All classes carried out lots of maths investigations, including counting our ‘Pennies for Pudsey’. Hedgehog Class organised several stalls at lunchtime to raise even more money for this worthy cause. We raised a whopping £402.60 in total!

Stretton Pre-school Our next Creative Curriculum theme is ‘To Infinity and Beyond’ where we will take on the role of scientists and astronauts on a mission to explore Space.

Several of our Key Stage 2 children took part in ‘Bikeability’ workshops where the children brought their bikes into school. They learnt how to improve their cycling skills and how to cycle safely on roads in the village. We are delighted that all our children who took part passed. Congratulations!

Stretton Christmas Fair a great success The Stretton Christmas Fair was run off to much acclaim. The children sang a selection of carols before meeting Santa.

Stilton Playgroup Happy New Year! December was a busy and exciting time. The children made some lovely things to take home as well as to decorate Playgroup; we learnt all about family customs at Christmas time and even had a visit from Father Christmas at our Christmas parties. The children had so much fun they didn’t even realise they were also learning numbers and shapes, how to join things together and make them balance as well as continuing to learn the phonetic alphabet! We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who donated to Santa as he toured around Stilton Village and to those who came along to support the Christmas Fete. We hope everyone had a lovely time. We did! Final takings are still being counted but we shall let you know how we did in the next issue.

“All the rehearsing and practice has really paid off,” said Laura Hardy, Chairperson of the charity that runs Stretton Pre-school. “We would like to thank all of the parents, staff and children for making it such a brilliant day.”

In our winter term we are having a lot of fun with communication. The children have enjoyed using different puppets to promote their communication and language skills which has proved very popular. Our rising 5s have been talking about feelings and how what we say and do can affect our friends, through this we devised some simple rules as a group to use in our setting. Also within our winter theme we are focussing on hibernation and helping our children understand about different animals and how and why they hibernate at this time of year.

Little Acorns Preschool and day Nursery

We would like to welcome everyone back after the Christmas holiday; we hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year. Our children ended the year with a wonderful Christmas concert, thank you to all the parents that helped make this a success. The children really enjoyed their Christmas party with a special visit from Santa. The children created some wonderful Christmas cards and decorations to hang on their trees at home. Thank you to all the parents who donated gifts to help us enable the children at ‘Little Miracles’ to have a great Christmas.

Yaxley Infants School There has been lots of fun at Yaxley Infant School over the festive period. Year One and Year Two were able to experience a Victorian Christmas on their trip to Stibbington. This followed on brilliantly from Year One’s Victorian-themed day at school, where the children were taken by surprise, entering school to see all forms of technology had disappeared and they had chalk to write with. The children were given Victorian names and stayed in character all day, along with their unusually strict teachers! Our Early Years Foundation Stage leader Miss Spicer has been putting her new knowledge of Forest Schooling to brilliant use, with the children learning life skills, experiencing a ‘natural childhood’ and spending extended periods of time in the great outdoors.

As a business local to our school I just thought you may find it useful to know that Fourfields School is hosting an electrical recycling day on Tuesday 6 January. We are accepting anything electrical – working or not – and all the items will be collected and broken down to be recycled/reused. There will be a bank for smaller items – such as laminators, toasters, IT accessories, phones, calculators, printers, kettles, torches but we can also accept larger items such as washing machines, old video players, tellys, monitors…? Question: Is it true that I can claim 100% allowance for the cost of my motorcycle that is used in my business? Answer: Yes it is true that you can claim 100% capital allowances (called Initial Investment Allowance) for the purchase of a motorcycle that is used wholly and exclusively for business purposes. From 1 or 6 April 2009 motorcycles were not categorised as cars for capital allowance purposes, although they were before that date. For capital allowance purposes, a car is any mechanically propelled road vehicle unless it is: • constructed in such a way that it is primarily suited for transporting goods of any sort • not commonly used or suitable for use as a private vehicle This means that vans, lorries even dual cab vehicles subject to a pay load limit and now motorcycles are not considered to be cars, whereas motor homes are. However, certain vehicles, such as driving school vehicles with dual controls, are not treated as cars for capital allowance purposes although they may be classed as cars for other tax rules.

Tax: Capital Expenditure This is the cost of buying, creating or improving a business asset, used to increase profit. For example, the cost of buying a van for your business would fall under capital expenditure. Other examples include buying machinery, technology, fixtures, etc. Business Expenditure You can get tax relief for your business costs (called revenue expenditure) as long as it’s not capital expenditure or specifically non-allowable. Examples of specifically non-allowable expenses are the legal costs of buying property, entertaining clients and any payments for non-business costs.

Cuckoos remain at summit Yaxley FC remains on course for a top three finish in the United Counties League this season. The Cuckoos recently drew at Rushden and Diamonds before a tough away win at Boston secured with a last minute penalty.

The FA Vase adventure continues at the time of writing with Brantham in Suffolk our next location in early December. There is a supporters’ coach going so if you were on board we hope you had a successful day!

We are in the last 64 of the Vase, and as close to Wembley as the club has been in its 114 year history. This success on the field has been replicated with an increase in fans through the turnstiles. Now is the time that we turn to those most arduous of tasks: dismantling/disposing of the Christmas tree, storing what feels like four thousand miles of lights for next year and accepting that once again, you have already failed with your New Year’s resolutions before January has even got into its stride. Without fail each year you resolve that this year will be different – that you will finally quit smoking, that you are going to lose that spare three stone and that you are going to finally start making that gym membership work for its £40 a month. And yet here you are. Sitting on the sofa watching Eastenders, eating the evening’s third packet of Wotsits and nursing the sore toe you received tripping over your gym bag. Willpower it seems has very much become won’t power. Fear not though, I too was once like you – a fat slob with pristine and unused gym kit. I found a way to better myself and whilst I did in fact fail (still a fat slob), they do say ‘those that can’t teach’. Or something like that I can’t remember. Anyway, the solution is once you’re settled down for the evening (kids in bed, washing up done, whatever), go for a walk. There is a nice route around the village that covers probably just a bit over three miles, so it’ll take you no more than an hour even if you’re walking slowly. If you have someone to walk with, congratulations you’ve got some quality time together, to talk through the remains of the day and to make snide comments about other people’s curtains. If you don’t, even better you can stick on some music and relax listening to Metallica or Taylor Swift or whatever horrendous excuse for music the kids listen to these days. Best of all, all the while you are steadily getting yourself fit and healthy without the need for bothersome gym instructors or lycra trousers with all the modesty of a nudist colony. So this year, rather than lying to yourself with fake promises of a lifestyle revolution, do yourself a favour and do something simple.
