Playtime fun after fundraising success in Coates

Youngsters at Coates Primary School are enjoying new play equipment after more than £20,000 was raised in a fundraising drive.

Staff, parents, pupils and volunteers all supported the Fun for Funds Group which started in November with the aim of raising just over £12,000. After staging a series of events including discos and bake sales they smashed the target and now children at the school have a fantastic range of new playground equipment to enjoy. Local businesses also supported the fundraising and one gifted pupil won £1,000 by winning a story writing competition.

The school teaches children from preschool to year six and headteacher, Mrs

Lindsey Boucher said: ‘We are astounded by the support from the school community to raise this outstanding amount of money. The play equipment is a brilliant addition to the outdoor provision and the children have already loved using it.’

The pupils agree, describing it as ‘Amazing!’ with one saying ‘I loved everything because it’s very fun.’

Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s two visitor centres in Norfolk –Redwings Aylsham, north of Norwich, and Redwings Caldecott, near Great Yarmouth – will both be open daily from 19 July through to 2 September.

• Fox’s birthday party (Caldecott): 4 August

• Noah’s birthday party (Caldecott): 25 August

Redwings is dog friendly and free to enter but donations to support its work are most welcome.

At Billie’s Fins swimming school, learning to swim is not a one size fits all approach. They focus on being inclusive, providing encouragement and support for all ages and abilities.

Everyone has different learning styles – some are more animated, or learn from watching others, to preferring a one-to-one approach. Billie’s Fins offers swimming lessons which follow their unique Swim Pathway. These are available as group lessons or private lessons. Starting from three months plus, Baby Fins join with their parents and carers in a group class where the sessions are designed for bonding, interaction and stimulation. The group classes continue to Adult and Little Fins from the age of 13 months plus, for parents and carers to enjoy time with their little ones. The focus is on bonding, interaction, fun and building confidence in the water together. It is at the next stage of the Swim Pathway as children enter Little Fins where their learning styles begin to show. Little Fins is for beginners

of all ages. This stage introduces being in the pool independently without a parent or carer. Here Little Fins develop through learning with their swimming teacher and teaching assistants. Across five stages they learn the fundamentals before progressing to Swim Fins.

Billie’s Fins have always had small classes from 6-7 in each group. However, for Little Fins who prefer to have some one-to-one support, or extra private lessons with a swimming teacher, these are available too.

The most popular private lessons are oneto-one but are also available for siblings and friends as two to one, or three to one. These sessions allow for more practice and confidence building for Little Fins who prefer a smaller group.

To get started contact Billie’s Fins swim team for enrolment details and for private lesson information visit: www.BilliesFins.com

The experienced swimming teachers at Billie’s Fins are trained to support all ages and have also received SEN and Disability training. The teaching styles at Billie’s Fins are focused on inclusivity; including SEND group classes and private one-to-ones.

School’s out!

The summer holidays mean less structure, more time spent together and extra playdates, but the change in routine can have its downside.

It’s a long time between school terms and in September it’s a worry whether they’ll still remember everything. Summer learning loss is the loss of academic skills and knowledge that can occur over the long summer break. Reduced access to learning resources and less time spent on educational activities, holidays away from home and different childcare arrangements can all have an impact.

Preparing for the 11+

Most importantly, the 11+ exams aren't far away so it’s wise to book any necessary extra tuition in a supportive atmosphere that children can succeed in.

The 11+ exam focuses on specific skills called verbal and non-verbal reasoning; verbal reasoning focuses on vocabulary, word meaning and shows how a child has understood what they have

read. The non-verbal test shows a pupil’s visual understanding, accuracy, speed of perception and their ability to manipulate objects.

Summer is the perfect time to prepare for 11+ entrance exams. Kip McGrath’s experienced tutors can talk students through the different question styles and ensure they have the different methods and strategies to approach these types of questions with confidence.

They also offer ‘mock' exams to ensure that children are prepared for the real thing!

THE WINNERS! 2024

Our Education Awards partners at Kip McGrath said – ‘Working with children is brilliant – to be able to support young individuals and be part of a wider team of people who dedicate themselves to education is amazing. It has been a great experience working with Term Times to present these Education Awards.

Class Teacher of the Year

WINNER

Mrs Rachel Glover, Deeping St James CP School

Mrs Glover received an overwhelming number of nominations so we are only able to share some of the highlights here. Mrs Glover job shared with her late colleague and friend Sarah Doud, who sadly died last year. Parents rushed to praise both her teaching skills and the way that she has helped pupils deal with this tragedy.

Head teacher Richard Westley said the Term Times Award is a fitting acknowledgement

In recognition

Mrs Sarah Doud, Deeping St James CP School

There’s no doubt that the sad loss of Sarah Doud had a huge impact on everyone at Deeping St James CP School, pupils and parents.

Mrs Doud was posthumously nominated for the Teacher Award by parent Sabina Green who said the whole school miss her very much and spoke of how grateful she was for the extra help she gave her youngest son.

‘We are lucky enough to say that Sarah Doud taught three of our children and they all loved

‘The amount of nominations and messages we heard from both parents and pupils was astounding –a real reminder of just how incredible those who work in education really are! Well done to everyone awarded.’

and recognition for Mrs Glover's outstanding contribution to the school and her class in particular.

‘She has always been determined to ensure all of the children in her class receive the best possible education and enjoy their time in school. More importantly, she has prioritised their mental wellbeing and supported them throughout a challenging year – showing what all her colleagues already knew – what a brilliant, caring teacher she is!’

Positive comments flooded in from parents. Jenny Purdy describes her as the children's “school mum” and says, ‘I am extremely grateful that the school have such a determined, caring, inspiring teacher.’ Klare Ward, another parent agrees, ‘She is an amazing teacher with the children at the heart of everything she does.’

Rebecca Shorter spoke of how Mrs Glover ‘always has time to listen and meet every child’s needs’ and Cloe Laughton said, ‘She has gone above and beyond this year for our children. The whole class adore her and are making such brilliant progress.’

Rebecca Barrett added, ‘She is outstanding at her job and her care has definitely been outstanding when all the children have really needed her.’

her because she was firm but fair. Sarah was a no-nonsense teacher with a kind heart and thirst for fun.

‘As a parent I have also worked in Mrs Doud’s class as a parent helper/reader. I used to love listening to her with the children; she really listened, made learning fun and talked to them with care and kindness. She deserves to be recognised for her dedication to all those children lucky enough to be taught by her and all the staff lucky enough to work with her.’

Head Teacher of the Year

WINNER

Mrs Kate Trethewy, Longthorpe Primary School

Kate Trethewy has been head teacher for a relatively short time at Longthorpe School but was nominated by several parents for the way she has already transformed the school with her inspirational approach.

Parent Lisa Deacon said – ‘Her first acts as a leader were to seek parents’ feedback and act rapidly. We now have a supportive school community with visible leadership and clear communication about events and standards. She is an excellent leader who inspires her team to create an environment of respect with children who are safe and ready to learn.’

Laura Ozawa agrees – ‘Kate Trethewy has made an amazingly positive difference to Longthorpe since she arrived last school year. In a short time the whole school’s atmosphere and ethos has changed. She is brilliant at making every child feel valued and celebrated for their achievements, no matter how small.’

Winner Kate Trethewy says she’s humbled to have won – ‘I am honoured and privileged to be leading such a wonderful school with the most amazing children, staff and families, who make me smile every single day.’

Amy (right) from Kip McGrath presents the award to Mrs Glover

SENDCo of the Year

WINNER

Kat Garland, St Augustine Catholic Voluntary Academy, Stamford

Although relatively new to the SENDCo role Kat Garland has already made a big impact, working through many complicated systems and procedures and engaging a huge number of different agencies and services to assist her pupils.

Rebecca Birch who runs the Reading Doctors tuition service at the school said – ‘I have been blown away by the amazing lengths that Kat will go to for the benefit of the children on her caseload. She does not stop at anything to fight for what she believes her children need to support their additional needs, seeking outside support, always thinking outside of the box to access funding and support.’

The school’s Headteacher Mrs Cox, says Mrs Garland is a deserving winner – ‘Mrs Garland is a SENDCo who is driven by heartfelt compassion for all of the pupils and families she supports. Mrs Garland has thoroughly enhanced the sense of nurture and wellbeing and was recently recognised by inspectors for her “outstanding pastoral care, especially for the most vulnerable”! It is no surprise then that Mrs Garland was nominated for this award – well done!’

Teaching Assistant of the Year

WINNER

Julia O’Donnell, Alconbury C of E Primary School

Teaching Assistant Julia O’Donnell throws herself into every aspect of her role at Alconbury with no job too big or too small, or too much trouble. She is hugely valued by both pupils and colleagues.

Natasha Houchen was urged by her children to nominate Julia – ‘My children, Otis and Tallulah Houchen, would like to nominate Julia O’Donnell for everything she does for the children at Alconbury Primary School – managing the road traffic at drop off and pick up, providing a caring, kind and safe environment for children to go for wrap around care, running forest schools and cleaning the school. We love you Mrs O’Donnell!’

One of the Headteachers at Alconbury, Hannah Mulcrone was also keen to sing her praises – ‘Julia is an inspiration to us all with her commitment and dedication to her numerous and varied roles within school. This ranges from

cooking breakfast and greeting the children with a cheery ‘Good Morning’ in our before school club, constructing dens and building rope swings amongst the mud and rain at Forest School to standing in her high visibility jacket and stopping traffic on our road closure. She is always positive, happy and a great role model to our children.’

Unbox Conveyancing Costs and Avoid Hidden Charges

Moving home can be expensive, with many costs to factor in, from mortgage fees, estate agent fees, deposits and stamp duty as well as legal fees. Comparing conveyancing quotes can be a minefield, so the conveyancing team at Hegarty has some helpful tips.

A conveyancing quote will include both legal fees and disbursements. Legal fees cover the charge for the conveyancer's services, while disbursements include costs incurred on your behalf, such as property search fees, registry fees, and stamp duty. Note what is and isn’t included in your quote so you can compare each like for like. Hegarty offer quotes that itemise all potential costs, so you are clear on what you’re paying from the outset.

What additional costs are involved in conveyancing?

Searches

Conveyancers typically include the cost of basic searches, like local authority, drainage, water, and environmental checks, in their quotes. However, unique property conditions or locations may necessitate additional, specialised searches, which can incur extra charges so make sure you check.

Leasehold Properties

Be aware of additional costs like ground rent and service charges. Ensure your conveyancer examines the lease agreement carefully. For leasehold properties or freehold properties managed by a company, your conveyancer will need a 'Sales Management Pack' including documentation about the managed areas and any additional costs.

Stamp Duty Land Tax

Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) can vary based on the property's worth and the buyer’s circumstances, so it’s important to precisely calculate the SDLT for your purchase.

Property Surveys

This is a crucial investment, independent of the conveyancer's fees. It can uncover hidden issues like structural flaws or moisture problems that aren't immediately visible and can avoid significant future expenses.

Transfer of Ownership Costs

Extra expenses can arise from handling lost or faulty documents, securing indemnity insurance, or rectifying title issues. Your conveyancer can guide you on this.

Chancel Repair Liability

Some properties have an old obligation called chancel repair liability, requiring them to contribute to nearby parish church repairs. This can lead to unforeseen expenses, so be sure to investigate.

Bank Transfer Fees

During the conveyancing process, multiple bank transfers, such as moving the deposit or paying the balance, may be necessary. Check these in advance, as they can add up over time.

Choosing a conveyancer

Conveyancing firms often highlight their basic legal fees but omit disbursement fees and additional costs, which can mislead clients into thinking the total cost is low. It's essential to ask for a complete breakdown of all expenses. When choosing a conveyancer, look for someone with a solid reputation who communicates well and can guide you efficiently.

Remember these key points:

• Avoid automatically selecting the one suggested by your estate agent or mortgage adviser

• Get several quotes and compare the services offered

• Use online reviews and recommendations to find a conveyancer you feel confident using

• Obtain a detailed quote, review it carefully, and check for hidden charges

• Ask the conveyancer directly about any potential additional fees beyond the initial quote

Hegarty provide fixed-fee packages for their conveyancing services, ensuring that you know your costs upfront.

The amount you will pay depends on whether you are buying or selling, the property's value, and if it's leasehold or freehold. Their quote will detail all applicable fees with no hidden extras, allowing you to make a fully informed decision.
