Yet, the daffodils have still danced their silent celebration with golden flags in the breeze, birds have still sung out their excited and triumphant dawn chorus, the evenings open up the skies in hopeful light .... and, despite other uncertainties, it all becomes Mother Nature’s inspirational, reassuring affirmation of better, brighter times to come. Spring has sprung, regardless of everything else. So defiantly. And so welcome.

Winter passed away; and spring, led by the months, awakened life in all nature. The forest was dressed in green; the young calves frisked on the new-sprung grass; the wind-winged shadows of light clouds sped over the green cornfields; the hermit cuckoo repeated his monotonous all-hail to the season; the nightingale, bird of love and minion of the evening star, filled the woods with song; while Venus lingered in the warm sunset, and the young green of the trees lay in gentle relief along the clear horizon.

Spring up to new life
I’d never been much of a gardener. I stood looking at the withered and sad looking plant, seemingly another victim of my sporadic summer watering routine. For all intents and purposes the plant looked dead; its leaves had gone brown and there was no growth, no activity, nothing. I cut it back to the ground and left it without much hope. So imagine my surprise when months later green shoots came vigorously springing up; it was alive! At this time of year everything seems to spring into life; new leaves on plants and trees, tulips flowering, trees blossoming, birds awakened from winter slumber to build nests. It’s like the world comes alive again. Jesus predicted that he would die and be raised to new life again. In John 12:24 he speaks of this as being like a seed being buried in the ground only to spring into life and produce a crop. For Jesus to bring the new life he came to give us he had to die; only by dying could he heal the consequences of us turning our backs on God. Unlike a seed which only lies dormant waiting to germinate, Jesus actually died; the injuries the Bible describes, especially the spear wound to his side, could not have been survived. This makes Easter morning’s empty tomb and his many appearances to his followers all the more amazing. While the burial of Jesus may have seemed like a full stop on what had been a promising life; instead by dying Jesus was putting a full stop on the sentence against us. His resurrection brings us new life too as he’s gone ahead of us defeating that final enemy, death, so we too can be raised to life forever like him. At this time when new life is all around us, consider how Jesus can cause new life to spring up in you, new life that will never fade or die, even when our body is in the grave; it’s like coming alive all over again. To find out more about the new life that Jesus offers contact Joel at: curate@cskhampton.church

Due to the size and population of the Peterborough area, Neighbourhood Watch has established a number of area groups with an Area Coordinator taking a lead. Officially these are called Cluster Groups, an Area Watch Coordinator is a person who links two or more Watches together. But not all parts of the city and villages have yet taken this approach.
It was good to see the walks feature in the Gazette. I hope there will be more. Perhaps it would be good to also share cylce routes ...
COMMUNITY
VOLUNTEERS
The reason I got involved with the neighbourhood watch was to get to know my neighbours and feel a part of the community in order to reduce crime which benefits everyone. Being a part of the local NHW helps empowers everyone to be more vigilant of their surroundings and alert others leading to a safer, more neighbourly and ultimately a secure community in which to live in. Each time there is an issue, members will send an email or even a photo of the problem, then we assess if it warrants a circulation around the contacts so residents are aware. We always reiterate to members that they should always ring 101 for non urgent matters which require police involvement before they call us. Residents should always ring 999, if it is an emergency situation where a crime is happening at the time. I would urge anyone wanting to join or start up a scheme to get involved – you won’t look back! If anyone would like to join as a member its free to do so or if you would just like to find out more information, you can contact myself through our Facebook Page www.facebook.com/hamptonnhw or send an email to hamptonnhw@gmail.com

Newer residents may not be aware that it is easy to access Nene Park from Hampton with a minimum of riding on roads. There are leaflets available from the information centre; number 4 covers Nene Park. To reach the park, start at the Tump, and climb the hill between the football pitches. Shortly after the bend at the top, take the footbridge across the parkway. Turn right and ride on the road for a short distance, then turn left into Orton Malborne by the Dragonfly pub. Behind the shops take the path to the right, and turn right at the junction with the Wellingtonia pathway. This leads to Orton Longueville. Turn left and ride on the road to the traffic lights. Straight across is Orton Mere and the Nene Valley Railway station. From here there are cycle routes into town (right) or towards Ferry Meadows (left). Crossing the railway leads to the path by the rowing lake.
I came across these two fellas just out for a walk! They didn't own a dog! So, they went litter picking. I did not get their names but what a lovely thing to do ...

20 - 23 April. National Stop Snoring Week is the annual event promoting general awareness that nobody need suffer as a result of snoring: it is a condition that can be treated. Snoring is the distinctive sound made by vibrations of the soft palate and other tissue in the mouth, nose and throat. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a particularly dangerous side-effect of snoring, defined as the cessation of airflow during sleep, preventing air from entering the lungs caused by an obstruction. trailblazers TRAIL 1 This trail should take approximatively one hour and it is six miles there and back. This route will take you along the Haddon Path and through the fields, full of delights, such as cabbages, turnips and wheat. It begins at Avery House, which is situated at the top of Eagle Way. You should turn right and follow a hidden off-road path that starts at the concrete blocks and it will lead to a sign that will point out the route . You will have to follow this path for a while as it is one-and-a-half miles long. You should then see a gate on the left that says 'No Parking,' but next to this there is a post saying 'Public Footpath.' Follow the arrow on the wooden post and take this path for roughly 15 minutes until you see a gap in the trees on the left where there is a mini bridge that leads to Folly Farm Equestrian Centre. Here, you will see horses either side of the path but don't be alarmed as there is fence separating the horses from you. After making your way out of the stables, turn left onto to the footpath and follow this road for two miles. You will then end up where you started. We suggest this trail for dog walkers as there are long straight paths which means your dog cannot leave your eye-line. The majority of this trail is scenic and you can let your dog off of its lead.
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK by Jamie & Johnathan
TRAIL 2 This trail should take approximately 50 minutes and is almost four miles there and back. This route will take you to some hidden places where you can relax with the family, it also gives you lots of room to walk your dog. The start is at the top Eagle Way, outside Avery House. Cross over the road and follow the sign that says 'Green Wheel, Farcet', then head down this path for 15 minutes until you come to a choice of two paths. Take the left option and follow this. You will come to a patch of grass where there is a little bench for a quick breather. Then, carry on and end up at a bridge that takes you over the train track. Once over the bridge take a sharp left and walk down the steps which take you to a playing field where you can let your dog off of its lead and have a picnic;. Alternatively, instead of turning left at the bridge you could go down the steps opposite and take a sharp left once at the bottom which takes you to a peaceful lake. Once you've chilled here, head back the same way you have come. We recommend this walk as you can let your dog run freely the whole time, it is also peaceful and secluded from the busy roads. TRAIL 3 This trail should take approximately two hours and it is 6.6 miles there and back.
TRAIL 1
This route will take you through fields which you would have never thought existed in Hampton. The start of this trail is at Avery House, where you'll need to walk to the right and not cross over London Road, past the cinder blocks down the off-road path. This will take you to the Green Wheel Haddon route. Walk on the same path round the lake for 30 minutes until you come to an opening, with Hampton on your right and a large field of wheat on your left. Make your way via the path to the noticeable tree that has no leaves and then follow this path for 15 minutes. You will then pass a gate and as you reach the road, turn left. If you are accompanied by a dog you should turn around and follow the path back as you will need to walk on the side of a quiet road for a mile. Once at The Premier Inn, turn left and follow the path that leads you past Norman Cross for two miles through Yaxley, past the petrol station and onwards into Hampton. You should find yourself across the road opposite Avery House. I would recommend this walk as its different and the places you will find yourself you would not normally see. TRAIL 3
TRAIL 2
TRAIL3
TRAIL 4
TRAIL 5
This trail should take approximately One hour and 10 minutes, and takes about four-anda-half miles. This trail will take you through abundant greenery and peaceful lakes and end up at a play park and a football pitch. This route starts off at Avery House where you will need to cross over so you are at the start of the 'Green Wheel Farcet' sign. Follow the sign and stay on this path for 20 minutes until you come to a choice of two paths. Take the path on the right and walk along barron land until you come to a bridge. Cross the bridge and go down the steps ahead of you and continue on the path forward for a while, until you come to an opening where a road will be opposite and over the road will be a field and a park. Once you've finished playing turn around, and follow the same route you came on, back to Avery House. We recommend this walk as it takes you to somewhere for children and older kids as well. it is also a good environment for your dog to be in.

CITY FIBRE PROMOTION
Ignore the pessimism - the high street is far from dead
Smarter shopping
What Full Fibre means for the future of retail For some time, we’ve been hearing about the decline of physical retail, spurred on by the digital age and our growing preference to the online marketplace. In the 10 years between January 2010 and January 2020, for example, the UK lost over 50,000 shops. That, of course, was prepandemic – during which some major brands went out of business. The battle has not yet been lost, however. Even in 2020, with many stores shuttered for large portions of the year, online sales accounted for just 27 per cent of total retail sales according to the ONS. The previous year, unaffected by COVID-19, the figure was 19 per cent. Despite the big leap, physical retailers still hold much of the market share. Online retail will almost certainly continue to eat into those numbers, but there remains plenty of opportunity for physical retailers to set themselves up for renewed success. One such opportunity lies in the very thing that’s blamed for their decline – digital technology. Forward-thinking retailers recognise that embracing the digital world may be the shot in the arm stores need to compete successfully. Shopping online can be incredibly convenient, with customers able to fill their baskets from the comfort of their sofas at any time of day. Yet, in reality, the experience can be relatively mundane. As Capita says in a recent report, "shopping is an emotional, visceral experience and people love to see, smell, touch, taste and try on the things they want to buy before they buy them". Put another way, shopping is about connection. From this perspective, it’s almost impossible for online shopping to replicate the most experiential elements of buying something in-person. For this reason, physical retailers should play to their strengths while also exploring how digital technology can give customers the best of both worlds in-store. And with connection being what consumers seek, it is rather ironically connectivity that powers the digital tech that will be so crucial to physical retailers’ success in the years ahead. Beacons, for instance, are small wireless devices that stores can use to track a customer’s journey around a store and then send them a notification if they have the store’s app installed on their phone. For example, you could be browsing for a new kettle in your favourite home store and the beacons could personalise your visit by sending your phone more details on its benefits, recommending the perfect matching toaster or even sending you a personal discount code. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the online giants are making their presence felt too. Amazon is making strides in the UK, with its Amazon Fresh
brand launching its first till-less grocery store in London, which sees shoppers simply scan their phone on entry and receive a bill automatically on departure – without a need to scan products individually. The BBC reports that this ‘effort-free’ mode of shopping requires the use of "hundreds of cameras and depth-sensors, and software developed using deep-learning artificialintelligence techniques". In other words, a robust digital infrastructure and connectivity is necessary to make the high-tech feel simple. Other retailers have found different ways to stand apart, with some focusing on transforming their fitting rooms through the use of augmented and virtual reality. This is already commonplace online, with retailers adopting virtual platforms that make it possible to ‘try on’ products from home, and it can work for physical retailers too. Imagine being in a fitting room, putting on a jacket you like the look of and – using smart technology embedded in the mirror – being able to change the colour or size in the blink of an eye. That makes life easier for the customers, but it also saves time, allowing more people to make use of the changing room and thus generating more sales. Yet, for UK retailers to make the most of these possibilities, there remains one significant barrier. Such data hungry technologies need connectivity they can rely on – without that, any positive customer benefits could easily be undone by a glitchy experience. They need the best possible digital foundation which is why CityFibre is building a new full fibre network in Peterborough. Designed for the digital age, full fibre networks use 100% fibre optic technology to carry data at light speed all the way from the home to the point of connection – a pristine open highway with no bumps in sight. This gives users consistently faster speeds - for upload and download, near limitless bandwidth and connectivity you can depend on. Most importantly for retailers, full fibre underpins 5G connectivity, which will be crucial to their ability to adopt cutting-edge technology and encourage shoppers to flock to the high street. Think of it as a high-capacity public wifi, connecting consumers with digital tech in shops, restaurants and on the streets themselves, and creating an experience which can’t be matched in an online-only world. We’re already seeing interesting initiatives popping up – like the UK’s first 5G shopping centre in Surrey and more will surely follow. So whether it’s friction-free shopping, smart fitting rooms, interactive displays or personalised offers delivered to your smartphone – full fibre and 5G helps to power all of these advances. Now, who’s for some retail therapy?

This may include plans to move house, dreaming of a home or garden makeover, or just a renewed enthusiasm to get your house in order – in the meantime however, there is nothing more satisfying than a spring clean – whether you have five minutes or a whole weekend. Here are a few tips if you are making a start: Take one room at a time – this way you won’t get overwhelmed by the task; and be ruthless with your decluttering. Ask yourself, does the item make me happy, does it serve a purpose, when was the last time I used it?

In the kitchen – start with the cupboards and then move on to cutlery drawer (tip: soak tea-stained teaspoons in a mug of water with a few drops of vinegar) and then finish with the microwave, kettle and toaster. When it comes to the bedroom, the wardrobe is usually the biggest issue. Take everything out and discard anything you haven’t worn on the past year or if doesn’t fit. Sell good condition clothes and bag up others for the charity shops. If you are still working from home, think about how you can improve your working area. Re-assess your space and how you can maintain a clutter-free environment. Go through paperwork, refiling or shredding as you go along. A minimal look will help clear your mind for each working day. Have a digital de-clutter too. In the kids’ bedrooms, encourage them to go through their belonging and donate any unwanted items to charity (as and when non-essential shops re-open). In return, treat them to some new bed linen and if you want to keep the space as clutter free as possible – some funky storage boxes or containers will give them a reason to keep their room tidy! If you have taken down numerous paintings, pieces of artwork of photo frames from newly decorated walls, try and get used to living in the space without them for a while, and only put back up what you really want to. Less is more – and besides, you want to show off your fab new walls don’t you? If you don’t have the time, skill or confidence to give your home the makeover it deserves then Safe Local Trades can put you in contact with many reputable and reliable professionals to help make your home sparkle this spring. Whether it’s cleaning or decluttering, odd jobs around the home, decorating, bringing new life to your upholstery, installing a new kitchen or bathroom, getting the windows professionally cleaned or your garden landscaped – they have tried, tested and reliable tradespeople for the job; however big or small. Darren’s philosophy is centred around his customers as he says “I have tried to build my business how I would want things from a business, around simple, old fashioned values such as; honesty, integrity and someone the customer can trust”.
"Sometimes, there have been occasions when a carpet or sofa may not be able to be fixed, but we always maintain that he would rather be honest with the customer regarding expectations and will always give honest opinions rather than make false promises." Gaining customers' trust and exceeding expectations is the most important factor to Darren. This has led to regular repeat work in local homes and businesses. He has also cleaned local commercial businesses such as Maharanis Indian restaurant and Mulberry Tree Farm Restaurant.

Mohammed Farooq, City Councillor for Hargate and Hempsted asks:
Should party politics influence local elections? You can tell when city council elections are imminent. Political activists become more vocal on social media - sometimes verging on the aggressive and battle lines are drawn, primarily Labour, Conservative, Lib Dem and Green. The question arises, should we really play ‘party politics’ with the election of a local councillor? After all, the primary role of any councillor is to serve his/ her ward, by ensuring council services are delivered efficiently and on time. The council meets its statutory obligations, and the councillor looks after the ward or area they represent. People often ask, what makes a good councillor? From my experience, there are two roles. In the council chamber, they ensure the city council, and its policies are effectively scrutinised, ensure it carries out its statutory duties and vote on key decisions. The other, equally important part sees the councillor fulfilling their duties to their residents. This is best delivered by someone who is local, cares about the community and goes above and beyond, working with all stakeholders to deliver best services to the local area. In summary, a community champion. Back in 2018 when I put myself forward for election, I stood for these very principles wishing to devote my time to the society in which we live and work. As a businessman, I wanted our council to deliver the best value for taxpayers’ money, while providing
the most efficient services. In the first two years under transformation (my cabinet portfolio), we delivered £19m worth of savings. This was achieved by reviewing major city council contracts and bringing some of the services in-house… these include IT, waste/recycling collection and setting up Aragon Direct Services. Many council functions have been combined with Cambridgeshire delivering cost-efficient synergies. In our own ward (Hargate and Hempsted) together with my co-councillor John Howard, we have facilitated many improvements including regular litter-pick groups, road safety initiatives (introducing 20mph), neighbourhood signs and ensuring adequate school places are available for our children while also helping residents with individual concerns. To achieve all this requires teamwork, sharing the same values and commitment. With this in mind, we have chosen two candidates for the May election: Nicolle Moyo (Hargate and Hempsted) and Lindsay Sharp (Hampton Vale). Both live
Promoted by Mohammed Farooq on behalf of Nicolle Moyo and Lindsay Sharp all at NWCCA, 76 Hargate Way, Hampton Hargate, Peterborough PE7 8DX.
in Hampton, both are genuine community champions with a track record of helping and working within the community. I am sure they will go on to become great councillors for our wards. COVID has left a lasting impact on us all emotionally, physically and financially. We are building our city back better with several major regeneration projects underway including Fletton Quays, Station Quarter and Northminster. Thanks in part to the government’s Township Fund, we are creating a new community hub and state of the art library. Two new innovation centres will provide hundreds of jobs and of course, the new technical university will soon offer untold opportunities for future generations of young people, to upskill our workforce in an increasingly data-driven and sustainable economy. This year’s local elections are therefore more important than ever before. With a ‘hung council’ looming we will be required to make a clear choice on polling day. To continue the great work started by our Conservative-led council or face a ‘coalition of chaos’ between Labour, Lib Dem and Green.
It is up to you

aprilgarden GREEN THUMB LAWN TREATMENT PROMOTION
Is your lawn summer ready? With warmer, longer days on the horizon, the beautiful bright colours of your garden are best enjoyed alongside a lush, green lawn. As the centrepiece of your garden, GreenThumb Lawn Treatment Service will ensure your lawn reaches its full potential as a weed-free, healthy, and well-loved lawn.
Our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is applied between April and June and features a fully coated fertiliser designed to give your lawn a timed release on nutrition over several months, feeding your grass and stimulating growth.
We recommend implementing a regular mowing regime to help your lawn be the best it can be. Dry, sunny days are the best conditions for mowing, however it’s important that your mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. It is also important, especially during the summer months, that your grass isn’t cut too short as this will weaken it, attracting unwanted weeds. When dry, we advise raising the height of your cut from 1” up to 2” and give it a good drink the day after mowing. As summer approaches, it’s essential that you keep your lawn healthy and strong in preparation for the rising temperatures, increased humidity, and reduced rainfall; this is where our NutraGreen ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment can help. Our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is applied between April and June and features a fully coated fertiliser designed to give your lawn a timed release on nutrition over several months, feeding your grass and stimulating
growth. This sophisticated treatments also includes a weed control to help eradicate those which are unwelcome on your lawn, keeping your lawn looking its best ready for summer. An added benefit of our ‘Summer Ready’ Treatment is that you’ll also receive an application of our fantastic water conserver, Oasis. Now is the perfect time for an Oasis Treatment as it helps your soil to make the best use of any available moisture, meaning you’ll need to water up to 80% less. Our popular Oasis Treatment now features an innovative, highly concentrated seaweed extract which has proven to have an almost immediate visual effect on the colour of your lawn. This unique solution also improves the quality of your grass, benefits root development and helps with stress tolerance; what’s not to love! Let’s create the lawn we both love. Three good larvae Most gardeners recognise the benefits of certain insects, such as the pollination services of bees and other species, and the ladybird munching on aphids, but not so well-known are some of the many beneficial insect larvae that are often confused as pests. In reality, these play a valuable role in controlling common pests. So, here we will take a look at three really useful larval groups ...
Fuchsia perfect
By Rachael Leverton
I love hardy fuchsias. They are some of the most rewarding plants to grow. They are easy to propagate, flower well and are not the least bit temperamental They are named after a 16th Century German herbalist and physician called Leonard Fuchs. Lots of gardeners struggle to spell fuchsia but if you think of his name and stick and ‘ia’ on the end you have it! In mild areas or at the seaside they can grow into huge shrubs. Elsewhere hard frosts see off most of the top growth in winter, then new shoots burst up from the soil in the spring, maturing into small shrubs about 2-3 feet / 60-100cm tall. At this time of year rooted cuttings are cheap. Grow them on for a few weeks under cover, changing the pot to a slightly larger one as they grow, then plant them out in May. Choose a sunny spot in well-drained soil. Make sure you pinch out the shoot tips frequently. It delays the flowers a little but they will become bushy little plants which produce more flowers in the long-run. Once they are mature you can more or less leave them to it. Simply sprinkle a handful or two of fertiliser
18
around them in the spring and again in the summer. There are lots of lovely varieties. “Mrs. Popple” is tall with red and purple flowers. “Mrs. W. P. Wood” is paler with pearly flowers. I have a soft spot for “Whiteknight’s Pearl” which is a beautiful pale pink. If you have a smaller plot try “Tom Thumb” or “Alice Hoffman”. It’s a little known fact that the berries and inner petals of fuchsias are edible (though it’s worth noting that ‘edible’ doesn’t mean they necessarily taste good!). However there is now a variety bred especially for eating. It’s called “Berry” and produces fruit with a flavour something like a sweet fig. The fuchsia berries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. They don’t have a long shelf life so pick them when they are soft and squishy and eat them fresh, or freeze small quantities as you collect them, until you have enough to make fuchsia jam or add to muffins, much as you might add blueberries.
Lacewing larva © Roger Key The parasitic or Ichneumon wasp larvae play an invaluable role in protection against caterpillars and other fleshy plant eaters including sawfly larvae and even aphids. The good work of these larvae is a direct consequence of the work of the adult wasp. These parasitic wasps lay their eggs inside the bodies of caterpillars via means of a sharp egg laying tube but it is the tiny larvae that then carry out the good work for gardeners by consuming the caterpillar from within. The adult wasps are not capable of stinging humans and also carry out a small amount of pollination and indeed Ichneumons are often sold commercially for release in greenhouses. One of the best plants
for attracting these handy wasps is the herb, dill. The gracious lacewing often described as fairy-like due to its translucent veined wings is another beneficial insect that eats aphids but so do its larvae, often in the thousands. Adult lacewings are found in three main colours: green, blue and brown. Again, a great plant to attract lacewings is dill but so too are fennel, coriander and angelica. The hoverly is a great mimic of bees and wasps , one of our best pollinators and worthy of space in our gardens for that alone, but the larvae are predators that consume on average 1,000 aphids. Great plants for attracting hoverflies include dill and lemon balm.
Happy Gardening.

Upright triangular ears, pointy snout, long bushy tail and reddish brown; there it was in the field observing me, as I walked past the Cala Homes site. It stopped, turned and watched me carefully ...
Hampt n
Lakota (Lover of Nature) That gave me the opportunity to enjoy the sight of one of our own Hampton foxes. For me it was a rare opportunity to watch one in its natural setting. Once it had seen I was not a threat it continued its journey across the field; its orangishness standing out quite well against the withered greyness of the field grasses.
Foxes also have sensitive hearing enabling them to locate a prey’s position with their long, tall ears.
Foxes mostly live a solitary life after they have raised their young, which is usually by the end of autumn. Although they do still maintain their family ties of a male (dog), a female (vixen) and their dispersed cubs. They seek out food sources on their own but do meet up with their family group occasionally to play and groom each other. As foxes are carnivorous they feed mainly on earthworms, rabbits, rodents, birds and insects.
Foxes breed once a year. The vixen digs a den or finds a vacant one where she can give birth to her litter of four or five cubs in the spring. Both the vixen and the dog will care for these cubs until they can find food for themselves, which is usually by autumn. It’s a sad fact though that 55% of foxes die in their first year and 80% die before they are three years old.
Foxes are mostly active at night and usually spend the day resting: so I was clearly quite fortunate to see one of our Hampton foxes roaming across the fields. Their eyes are specially adapted to night vision enabling them to roam their territory seeking out prey.
I wasn’t aware that foxes are the only type of dog-related species which can retract their claws like a cat. Interestingly they also have vertical pupils, again like cats, whereas domesticated dogs have round ones.
In some myths, foxes are depicted as wise and generous, and sometimes as a clever spirit who helps people and animals in need, or punishes those who are arrogant. But unfortunately in quite a lot of folklore the fox is seen as sly and cunning. Well my Hampton fox looked just beautiful to me.

Swimmers will be able to book online from 22 March.
Peterborough Lido opens early for Easter holiday fun! After several weeks of speculation and the disappointment of the Lido remaining closed last year due to the pandemic, the wait is nearly over and Peterborough’s iconic Lido is set to open its doors on Monday 29 March. The latest government announcement regarding the gradual easing of restrictions means that outdoor swimming is permitted from the 29 March, it is one of only a few organised activities that can be enjoyed and the Lido will be ready for the start of the Easter holidays. The pools will be heated to a balmy 26 degrees and the main 50m pool will be open for both lane and open swimming, perfect for families and the many residents who are missing the opportunity to get back to their regular swimming routines. The number of bathers allowed will be less than usual and swimming sessions will need to be booked online to ensure the guidance put in place is followed. The team from Vivacity, now managed by Peterborough Limited, have worked throughout the
freezing cold January and February temperatures to put the love into the Lido and ensure it is at its glorious best. The opening is fully supported by Peterborough City Council, Councillor Steve Allen, Cabinet Member for Housing, Culture and Recreation told us; “as a city we are so fortunate to have such a magnificent lido. We are delighted that Peterborough Limited have got the facility ready in perfect time, as restrictions on outdoor activities are scheduled to be eased. Heating the pool means that whatever the Easter break brings us weather-wise, swimmers can enjoy our fabulous Lido once again”. There can be no more enthusiastic supporters of Peterborough’s lido than members of its Friends’ Group, who are absolutely delighted to start
dreaming about the prospect of swimming there again in only a few weeks’ time! Janet Martin, Chair of Friends of Peterborough Lido commented: “Last year was a difficult one – not only because of lockdown restrictions that prevented any swimming, but also due to concern about the future of our beloved lido. We cannot praise enough the efforts of former Vivacity staff, the City Council, and the new managing organisation Peterborough Limited, for all the hard work and energy they have put in to ensure that not only are we are able to open this year, but to open well ahead of the schedule we had all anticipated. We are tremendously reassured by this effort that the long-term future of our lido is looking bright under its new management team.
The Friends of Peterborough Lido were formed in 2016 specifically to represent the views of lido supporters and users, and have enjoyed an excellent working relationship with the facility’s previous management team. Anyone wishing to join the Friends, with the ability to feed views directly into the running of the lido, is invited to contact us via our website https://friendsofpeterboroughlido.co.uk

easterfun I’m sure most parents are more than a little fed up with hearing the phrase ‘I’m bored….’ It’s been a difficult year for most of us, especially children/teens who have desperately missed their usual socialising at school and in their free time. Like most parents we have tried our best to try to keep their spirits up by keeping them busy, but a whole year of coming up with new ideas can be a little draining for even the most inventive individuals. Hampton Vale Primary
It was with great excitement that we welcomed all children back to school on Monday, 8th. March. It was lovely to see full classrooms, busy with learning and on the playground and field children, in their bubbles, playing together. We would like to thank our staff for working tirelessly to provide a quality education for our children, as well as all the parents and carers of our students, for their support and communication over the lockdown period as they taught their children at home. Developing a love of reading is a priority at Hampton Vale. We have created dedicated reading spaces within our school which we hope will ignite the imagination and allow children, and adults, to be swept along with the adventure of a story.
Holme Church of England Primary Academy This year we enjoyed a remote World Book Day. The children and their families were incredibly creative when asked to recreate book covers. ( see photographs)
World Book Day is one of our favourite days of the academic year and we did not want this year to be any different. We asked our school community to dress up as their favourite book character and they did not disappoint. The number of books which were represented in costumes were really too many to count, from Winnie the Pooh to Roald Dahl characters, from Harry Potter to tigers and Gruffalos; they were all an amazing sight to behold, whether it was in our live online lessons or in school with our critical worker children.

younggazette Little Acorns
Our Preschool children have been learning about potting plants, in preparation for summer. We set up a potting station, supported by resources and provocations so that the children could carry out a practical learning experience. The children are learning about what plants need to grow and what they can do to help. The children have practised potting seeds; caring for them and watching them grow. This is a great learning opportunity for them and is giving them the practise they need in preparation for the larger scale in the garden.

Skin Care Revolution Have you ever actually stepped back to think about where that pretty bottle of liquid in that glistening glass jar has come from? Where it might have travelled before it reached your bathroom cabinet? Who might have touched the ingredients in that bottle? The impact it might have had on human, animal and plant lives on its journey to reaching you and even when you discard it? As with pain, we often take our skin for granted until there is a problem. Then we normally work through endless products that promise a cure yet are filled with harsh chemicals, fragrances and preservatives. Importantly, inorganic beauty products are often made from harmful ingredients that can result in the degradation of the ecosystem. Equally significant is that some of these minerals are also linked to causing breast cancer, and therefore you should think about opting for the organic way. We are currently in a skincare revolution, where many of us are turning away from synthetic products that strip our skin of its natural oils and turning towards products that are natural, simple and gentle.
Natural products are better for the environment than synthetic skincare products, as they are packed with beneficial
nutrients and are easier on the skin, much less irritating and minimize the risk of allergies. Topical CBD products are part of a growing trend which has taken the world of skincare and cosmetics by storm. Products like CBD massage oils and roll-ons are becoming the new go-to for people who are looking for natural ingredients that work well in healing various health conditions. What many people don’t know is that CBD oil can work well on your skin in the same way as it is useful when taken inside the body with oral drops. Complementary and alternative therapies typically take a holistic approach to your physical and mental health. This means that they consider all aspects of your physical and emotional wellbeing as a whole, rather than treating particular symptoms separately. For example, some complementary therapies focus on the mind, body and spirit or on the flow of energy through your body.
Our skin is the largest organ in our body, responsible for protecting us from the outside world – with all its germs, toxins and other unmentionables! In this current climate, it’s no surprise that sales are soaring. Visit hapihemp and get ready to join the revolution!

THE ZOOM BOOM
Dr Rebecca Coates GP, Aesthetic Doctor & National Trainer (MBBS, MRCGP)
Why so many people are turning to 'natural' cosmetic procedures
Dr Rebecca Coates (or Dr Becky to many of her clients) always wanted to be a GP, but during the many years of training developed a great passion for medical aesthetics.
Lockdown has meant hours of staring at our own faces on video calls, from work meetings to socialising with family and friends, and many of us have started to analyse and criticise our appearances. This has led to a huge increase in people wanting to change the way they look and the demand for non-surgical aesthetic treatments is greater than ever Lockdown has meant hours of staring at our own faces on video calls, from work meetings to socialising with family and friends, and many of us have started to analyse and criticise our appearances. This has led to a huge increase in people wanting to change the way they look and the demand for non-surgical aesthetic treatments is greater than ever. However the camera does not give you an accurate perception of yourself. The features that are closest to the camera are more disproportionally shown, for example a hook or bump on the nose becomes much more obvious. And the camera is often angled lower on the face, worsening the appearance of the neck and jowls. Trends in aesthetic treatments have changed over the past few years, and less is now more. The key is to make people wonder...have they or haven’t they had 'work' done? The secret with “tweakments” is to seek out the best practitioner who uses safe, well-tested products, and to know when to stop. When it is done well, non-surgical cosmetic work can be life-changing as well as life-enhancing because it gives men and women the power to choose how they look as they age without having to resort to expensive, invasive cosmetic surgery. Dr Rebecca Coates, GP and owner of Anew Medical Aesthetics, experienced firsthand the significant increase in enquiries regarding non-surgical treatments. “Many clients, both new and existing, mentioned Zoom in their enquiries - from a mole on their forehead to tired eyes or a saggy neck. Any insecurities seemed to be amplified by the camera. One of the most requested treatments at the moment is the non-surgical face lift.”
The Juvederm 8-point lift utilises the VYCROSS collection of hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers for facial revitalisation and shaping, and is adapted based on each patient’s profile to achieve the desired outcome. Facial volume loss contributes significantly to facial ageing; it is the result of the loss and repositioning of facial fat as well as skeletal remodelling. Key areas of volume loss include the cheeks, tear-trough (under the eye), nasolabial fold and pre-jowl sulcus. HA fillers provide versatility and flexibility for harmonious revitalisation and nonpermanent enhancement of the face.
She trained in Harley Street to ensure she learnt from the best in the aesthetic industry and offers a wide range of advanced non-surgical treatments to make people feel 'better' in a very different way.
ANEW MEDICAL AESTHETICS PROMOTION
Trends in aesthetic treatments have changed over the past few years, and less is now more. The key is to make people wonder...have they or haven’t they had 'work' done? The clients requesting this treatment are typically 40+ years old, and not as used to seeing themselves on screen as the younger generation, who perhaps use social media daily. They are looking to turn back the clock a few years but often without it being noticeable to other people. Another increasingly popular treatment over the past few years is Profhilo, an injectable hyaluronic acid combining deep hydration with mechanical lifting of the skin. Most commonly it is used to treat the mid and lower face, but it can also be used on the neck, hands, and any other area of skin laxity on the body. With 7 years experience in the aesthetic industry, and three years of teaching these techniques to other medical professionals, Rebecca will be able to assess your areas of concern and suggest an appropriate treatment plan based on your expectations.

Lights at the end of the tunnel So many of you are getting organised and currently booking some amazing holidays for this year and next. It does feel like people are truly believing there is a chance, however small, that you could get away this summer It is looking more likely that both Greece and Cyprus are going to allow those of us who have had the vaccine to go over this summer and enjoy those beautiful beaches and have maybe an ouzo or two whilst watching the sunset. This week, I have already booked a once-in-a-lifetime safari and a Route 66 trip, along with a few more for those looking at what may be possible later in the year. Christmas market city breaks to places like Prague and Budapest are also becoming very much a possibility and there are plenty of great prices, starting at around £300 pp for three nights on a package break.
The Northern Lights Another popular city break is Iceland with many people enquiring about when is the best time to see the Northern lights (this is the beginning of the year so February is a fab time for this ) and again prices from around £375 pp. For those who are thinking of UK breaks this summer, Cornwall and Devon are the leading destinations to visit, with their beautiful coastlines, so get in touch and see if I can help you get away this year.

Chocolate Poisoning We’re sure you know, but it's good to reiterate it at this time of year…that chocolate is poisonous for our pets. Mother’s Day and Easter are coming. Poisonings at this time of year are more common, so we thought we’d tell you more about it. There are a few ingredients in chocolate that aren’t good for our pets. The digestive systems of cats and dogs cannot cope with a high content of fats and sugars in their diets and it can contribute to a painful condition called pancreatitis. This is inflammation of the pancreas, the organ responsible for producing digestive enzymes and hormones such as insulin. Once a pet has had pancreatitis, they will often suffer bouts again in the future. It is treatable but can be fatal in some cases. The main poisonous ingredient of chocolate you need to be aware of is a compound called theobromine, which is similar to caffeine. Like caffeine, it is a stimulant and is responsible for the famed lift some people get from eating chocolate. As a stimulant, it affects the central
nervous system, increases heart rate, dilates blood vessels and stimulates urine production. In the pet’s body, all this adds up to serious consequences including an often lethal over-stimulation of the heart.
is much slower. This means our pets are far more sensitive to the compound.
Toxic levels
Why is chocolate so toxic to our pets and yet we can eat it with no ill effects? It might surprise you to learn that theobromine can also be poisonous to people! It would just take a very large quantity to have a reaction (so don’t panic, you can still safely eat chocolate). The difference between us and our pets is the digestive systems. Cats’ and dogs’ systems are not as efficient at metabolising (breaking down) theobromine and the process
Like most poisons, effects are determined by a few factors. Theobromine toxicity levels is dependent on: Type of chocolate – dark chocolate has a higher theobromine content per 100g than milk chocolate Quantity of chocolate – it goes without saying that the more chocolate consumed, the more theobromine that needs to be metabolised by the digestive system Size of pet – it takes less theobromine to reach toxic levels in smaller pets Remember, chocolate is also poisonous to cats, but cases are less common than with dogs.

legallybinding
Legal support could be key to your divorce Many spouses going through a divorce believe they either cannot or should not go to the expense of obtaining professional advice concerning the legal intricacies of the process. This is nearly always the wrong decision. The key to achieving a fair and sustainable financial settlement is rooted in a clear understanding of your legal rights. Without the benefit of expert advice, it’s easy to end up spending a great deal of time, money and energy focusing on issues that are not legally significant and if your spouse does have a solicitor acting for him or her, you will be at a distinct disadvantage. The support of a solicitor will keep you focused on the legal issues and ensure that you are protected from being pressurised into agreeing an unsuitable settlement which could leave you financially vulnerable. It is essential to have a full and detailed picture of both parties’ financial positions before the detail of a fair settlement is considered. In particular, pension assets need to be examined carefully and these can be a minefield, definitely requiring expert scrutiny. While both parties have a duty of full and frank disclosure, your solicitor will ensure that no assets which could be vital to helping you build your new life, are missed. The legal process does not have to involve court and having a solicitor is more likely to avoid litigation as your solicitor will be aware of how to use mediation and other dispute resolution options.
Invest in legal expertise, you are worth it.

Tax Calculation Advice by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
The tax year ends on 5 April 2021 and consideration should be given to payments on account (POA) as briefly set out in our January 2021 Newsletter. This gave rise to many questions and enquiries what they are. We therefore explain in a little more detail as below: As part of your tax bill you may see an amount called a POA. This is an amount that you have to pay on account based on the tax due in the current year. Often people think that they are having to pay tax in advance but actually tax due for the self employed is paid in arrears; by 31 January following the end of the tax year. So 10 months later. HMRC use the POA system to make sure that they have collected at least part of the tax due as you go. It can be rather confusing but let’s take a look at a simplified example which will hopefully explain how this all works: Jane makes £19,500 profit from her small business in the tax year 2019 / 2020 and she has no other income. She is preparing her accounts and submitting her tax return for the tax year 2019/2020; that covers the period 06/04/19 to 05/04/20. Her tax bill for the year (excluding his Class 2 National Insurance (NIC) which are not included in the POA calculation) will be:
Calculating Tax Due Profit less personal allowance = taxable income £19,500 – £12,500 = £7,000 taxed at 20% =£1,400 income tax due Profit – £8,632 = amount subject to Class 4 NIC at 9% £19,500 – £8,632 = £10,868 x 9% = £978.12 Class 4 NIC due Total taxes due and payable by 31 January 2021 = £2,378.12
What about 2020/2021? 2020/2021 started on 06/04/20 and finishes on 05/04/21. POA are due when the tax payable for the previous year was over £1,000. However if more than 80 per cent of this tax has already been collected at source, then no POA will be due. POA for tax year 2020/2021 was due on 31 January 2021 and 31 July 2021 i.e. two POA are made each being half of the tax due in the previous year. You can apply to reduce or eliminate your POA, but when the total tax for 2020/2021 is known the POA that would have been due are calculated as being greater than the amount paid interest will be charged on the difference.
Final Tax Payments at 31 January 2021 As Jane’s tax due is more than £1,000, HMRC will expect her to make a POA of half of the total of the taxes due of £2,378.12 including the Class 4 NIC making a POA of £1,189.06 due on 31 January 2021 and 31 July 2021.
Certified Public Accountants supporting local businesses with cost-effective accountancy and taxation service for many years.
This makes the total tax due on 31 January 2021 £3,567.18.
We specialise in sole traders, partnerships, small limited companies and all types of self-employed businesses, as well as all aspects of accountancy and taxation, concentrating on the personal approach.
POA are not a payment in advance, just an interim payment
Speak to Pete or Bernard, any time, for a free, initial chat.
Therefore if possible, you should calculate as close as you can your tax payable for 2020/2021 that will enable whether to reduce the POA. If you made the first POA in January 2021, complete your 2021 tax return (and include any taxable grants received) and if necessary reduce the second POA due in July 2021 if necessary. If you are one of our clients, we would automatically do this on your behalf.
