WELCOME
...to the August issue of the Hampton Gazette. The summer holidays are finally here and Hampton has so much to offer at this time of the year. We have an amazing new drama group starting for children aged 9 years and over in September so if you have a budding actor or actress in your family don’t forget to register your interest. With the hot weather, you are probably aware of the presence of stripey flying insects with a sting in their tail. Before you reach for the swatter, turn to page 19 as you might be interested to learn why wasps are not necessarily your garden's public enemy number one. There is great news for those of who struggle with usual surgery times with the opening of the GP Hub. The local Scout Group had a lively time at Teardrop Lake earlier this summer. Our summer holiday guide has some amazing places to visit over the next few weeks, and our local country park Ferry Meadows has some really fantastic activities lined up. Don’t forget your BBQ safety and we hope you have a fabulous summer. and the team

Recently we have all been reeling from the assaults of far too many tragic events, including the horrific Grenfell Tower fire. Disbelief and anger, the first two stages of grief, have been collectively expressed, not just by those directly affected, but by our entire nation. Terrorist attacks against Finsbury mosque worshippers, pedestrians on London and Westminster bridges and children at a Manchester concert, engender incredulity and fear. Politically, Brexit and its uncertain outcome, along with a hung parliament, has left some feeling unsafe and insecure. What sort of society have we become? What sort of society would we like to be part of? How should we nurture and educate our young, offer meaningful work and decent accommodation and care for our elderly, with the resources available to us? It can all get too much, and we hope it will all go away, or at least not come too close. Lamentation, raging at the dreadfulness of events, and their personal impact, has long been a type of prayer cried out by Christians to God. Raw, real and with faith that we are heard, that we are not abandoned. For God so loved the world that he, through Jesus, promised to be with us always as the one true, secure relationship that we can have for ever, that remains even when all else is stripped away. Grief gradually turns to hope, enabling us to trust again and love again. At CSK we support each other during tough times and celebrate together in good times. All are welcome to join us as we walk the journey of life together. Many blessings, Sylvia T: 01733 248236

People of all skin colours should take care to avoid damage to the eyes, overheating and dehydration. In the short term, even mild reddening of the skin from sun exposure is a sign of damage. Sunburn can blister the skin and make it peel. Longer term problems can also arise. Too much sun speeds up ageing of the skin, making it leathery, mottled and wrinkled. The most serious effect is an increased chance of developing skin cancer. What can you do to protect yourself?

What I am writing now seems very topical and appropriate today but I realise that I have no idea what the weather will be like when you read this but here goes anyway. Too much sunlight is harmful to your skin. A tan is actually a sign that the skin has been damaged. This damage is caused by the ultraviolet (UV) rays in the sunlight. If your work keeps you outdoors for a long periods of time or you like to sit in the sun your skin could be exposed to more sun than is healthy for you. You should take particular care if you have:
I am sitting in my office looking out at people enjoying a beautiful sunny day there are couples sitting on the grass chatting and children playing an idyllic summer scene.

Why choose a Resolution member? What is Resolution in the context of Family Law? It is a community of 6,500 family justice professionals who work with families and individuals to resolve issues in a constructive way. This is the official description of Resolution and all quality family lawyers in England and Wales will belong to this national organisation. What does it do for you, the potential user of legal services if you are having to deal with the breakdown of a relationship and/or problems with parental rights to your children? If you consult a family solicitor who is a member of Resolution, you should be confident that your case will be dealt with considering the needs of the whole family, in particular the best interests of the children if relevant, and most of all, promoting a non-conflictual approach to your case which, if maintained throughout, is guaranteed to produce a more satisfactory final outcome. An improved Code of Practice was launched in the recent Good Divorce Week during which 150 Resolution members met with MPs at Westminster to promote the campaign for no fault divorce and rights for cohabiting couples – more of that later.

An amazing day at Teardrop Lake! Saturday 17 June saw the first ever Hampton Scouts Water Sports Day! This was a joint event provided by the Scout Leaders and the Sea Cadet Instructors. The turnout was excellent with the majority of the troop coming along and having a day out at Teardrop Lake.
IS YOUR CHILD IN YEAR 4 THIS SEPTEMBER? THEY CAN PLAY FOOTBALL FREE!
The Scouts all had a go at sailing, paddle boarding and power boating. Many of the troop had previously had very little experience with water sports and gave everything a go. By the end of this 'water term' there will be numerous badges earned for their uniform! Well done to half the troop who spent the first part of the morning learning lifesaving skills and nautical knots and bearing

with the instructors while plans were slightly altered due to unforeseen circumstances. One of the activities that was particularly enjoyed by all (leaders included) was the simple activity of jumping off the pontoon into the lake for a cooling down swim. It was great to see the scouts all enjoying being outside and on the water. Their behaviour all day was fantastic, everyone tried out new activities and many

overcame nerves to jump out of boats and go out of their depth. A massive 'thank you' to all the parents who have uploaded so many wonderful photos to our Facebook group, for all your patience and support throughout the day and thanks also to those who helped with the barbecue and cleared up at the end. It was very much appreciated. Your feedback and encouragement has made us consider more events :)

To protect you, your family and your home, it is advisable to have working fire alarms in your property and to generally be fire-safety savvy.
Stay safe in BBQ season
Summer's here and whatever the weather, us Brits love our barbecues!
A
great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the fellas to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun. With commentary of the weekend sporting events providing a summery background, what’s not to love? Sadly, some BBQ bashes are spoiled through accidents that occur in the garden each year. Last time figures were collected through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/LASS) in 2002, an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in the UK having had an accident involving a barbecue. The most common types of barbecue-related accidents as shown by the HASS/LASS figures were: Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame - 800. Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200.
The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel. However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure you BBQ is fun-filled and not a flaming failure. Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture such as wooden or plastic chairs. Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage and never light it in an enclosed space. Never leave a barbecue unattended. Never let children too close to the barbecue. Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder. When choosing a barbecue, stability is essential - ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair, Wishing you all a very happy, healthy, fun and above all – safe – BBQ season.

Jo Jingles Music Classes With lots of activities to choose from in your local area, why should you opt for a Jo Jingles music class for your child?
Countless research studies indicate that music aids the development of speech, social skills, confidence and self-expression. Music can also help with maths and reading. 'When children learn rhythm, they are learning ratios, fractions and proportions' – Professor Gordon Shaw, University of California.. Singing songs to your child widens their vocabulary and improves listening skills, both of which make learning to read easier - Professor John Sloboda, Keele University. Jo Jingles is the UK’s leading music, singing and movement group and introduces children between the ages of three months to 5 years to music, in a fun and educational way. Classes are structured and class sizes are limited, which allows the children to enjoy themselves in a safe environment where the songs and activities are tailored to the development needs of each age group. Carla Noye who runs the classes in the local area told us “A lot of planning goes into our weekly programmes - offering exciting pre-school themes and giving parents and carers a weekly opportunity for some very special one-to-one time.” For details on local classes contact Carla on 07850 420848 or visit jojingles.com/peterborougharea. / jojingleshq1

EDUC ATION
Vale Community Pre-school
The summer term at Vale Community Pre-school is always a busy one, as well as having provided an abundance of daily educational learning experiences through fun activities and hands on experiences, we have also had exciting visits from our Graduating children’s new reception class teachers, weekly ‘Key Sport’ physical education sessions, fundraising events and lots of fantastically themed fun days to fit in before our end of term Graduation spectacular. The Staff team at Vale Community Pre-school (Nicole, Cheryl, Nikita, Kelly, Lindsey, Steph and Fiona) would like to take this opportunity to say a great big thank you to all their families for another year of back in September after the fantastic support. summer break. We would like to wish From September 2017, Vale everyone a wonderful summer Community Pre-school will be and look forward to seeing all operating from 8.30am-11.30am, our new and returning families Monday- Friday, Term time only. Hampton Tiddlers What an exciting time we’ve all had at Hampton Tiddlers these past weeks. Our craft sessions are always a big hit with the toddlers and their parents/carers. However, Tom's story circle with Eastern Angles, had even the babies listening with interest. It was a huge success and loved by all. We look forward to other sessions with Eastern Angles. Another, equally popular event has been ‘Sporty Maths' with Paul from Sporting Hands that ran for an impressive six weeks. What’s more, we were lucky enough to be able to host a skills development session in partnership with Peterborough Presents. We will be present at the Hampton Festival. Next month we have a trip organised to Huntstanton. For further details on this and all other activities we have planned for next month, go to our Facebook page - Hampton Tiddler. Hargate Primary Another school year has ended and now seems a good time to reflect upon all the great things that have been happening at Hampton Hargate. It’s been a busy term with sports days, trips, science week and the Year 6 residential packed with activities including the high/ low ropes, zip wire and archery. Year 3&4 children, meanwhile, participated in Den Building and Treasure Hunts at Ferry Meadows, Year 5 had fun at the Food & Farming Day at the Showground and Year 2 visited the seaside at Hunstanton! Our Summer Fun Day on 1st July was a huge success and we were very pleased to see so many people supporting our event even the weather was fabulous! A night at the film awards proved once again to be successful and our dancers at the recent Cresset Dance Festival made us proud. In other news – well done to our fabulous Eco Warriors
and Bike it Crew who have been working towards the Peterborough Eco Framework. This framework allows us to show our progress towards being a sustainable school. We have successfully achieved 5 certificates and are able to fly the Peterborough Eco Framework flag. Well done Miss Porter, Miss Bland, the Eco Warriors and the Bike it Crew. And finally, goodbye and good luck to our Year 6 pupils as they leave Hampton Hargate Primary School and move on to their new secondary school. We are certainly ready for a summer break and look forward to seeing everyone in September!
Hampton College What a hectic end to the summer term - events which have happened in the past few weeks include: Secondary and Primary Phase Sports Days, which saw parents turn out to cheer on our young & talented athletes as they competed in a range of sporting activities; Year 11 Leavers’ Day, which included tears, hoodies, competitions and a BBQ; Year 13 Leavers Dinner; The East of England Careers Show; The Jaguar Land Rover Trip; Higher Education Information Evening; The hugely successful Year 6 Induction day and the spectacular Arts Celebration Evening, which showcased the wonderful student work of Hampton College. Fairy-tale Ending Big hair, ball gowns and expensive cars everywhere: Friday 7 July saw a fairytale ending to secondary school life as the Year 11 Prom took place. Both the boys and girls looked truly stunning as they swapped school uniform for elegant evening attire. The
students enjoyed a three course dinner followed by an evening of laughing & dancing with friends and teachers.
Firebreak During the hottest week in June, six Year 9 students went to two different fire stations where they trained in activities such as drill, hose running, navigating a smoky building, using breathing apparatus and performing CPR on a casualty. They had to work as a team with six students from OBA and demonstrate courage in overcoming fears such as heights as well as developing clear communication skills which are essential in an emergency situation. At the end of the week they all qualified with an AQA in Community Firefighting
Skills and were presented with certificates at an official pass out parade, attended by various dignitaries, proud parents and school staff. Outstanding Achievement The two form tutor groups who over the school year managed to reach the highest (SLT) award in our Houseopoly reward system; (R-AMI and S-RLB) were invited to an early, ticketed, VIP lunch on Wednesday 12 July outside on the terrace. Lunch was silver served to them as a reward and celebration by Headteacher, Mr Gilligan. Sky Sports Living Project Seventeen students took part in our Loyalty day visit with Jade Windley, athlete mentor from the Living for Sports Project. Students learnt about Jade’s story, including her road to Wimbledon success at the age of 12, battles with injuries and how she managed her education with huge commitments to playing high level tennis. Have the most wonderful summer break! Hampton College.

used to see them occasionally on the other side of the London Road but being timid creatures they used to make a rapid escape as soon as they noticed my presence. So a closeup sighting was rarely possible. It’s the bird I first noticed when we arrived here over twelve years ago. In spring and summer the pied wagtail is a definite black and white but in winter its plumage changes to rather more tones of grey. No one seems to know why they wag their tails, though. Although it has been suggested that it may be to disturb insects, or signal submissiveness to other wagtails or even a warning signal to potential predators. The local Peterborough poet, John Clare, wrote of the wagtail’s walk: ‘Little trotty wagtail he went in the rain. And tittering, tottering sideways
It’s the wagging of the tail that makes the wagtail so distinctive I think. It makes for fascinating observation as it flits its way around Hampton.
he neer got straight again.’ In country areas wagtails have been known as Penny Wagtail, Willy Wagtail and Water Wagtail. For those of you of a certain age, who spent holidays at Warners Holiday camps in the late 1950s and 60s, you may remember that the children’s holiday club was named after this delightful bird. There was even a club song! ‘We are Warner’s Wagtails, Happy as can be, Loving ev’ry minute, By the deep blue sea. When you look around us, You’ll always see us smile. We are Warner’s Wagtails happy all the while.’ Nothing to do with the bird itself but interesting in terms of associated memories! Returning to the actual bird itself. Pied wagtails feed on insects either catching them in the air or on the ground. They

are often seen on Hampton pavements strutting along, tail constantly bobbing, pecking between the slabs looking for tasty meals. They can be enticed into gardens in the winter, when insects are scarce, to feed on seeds and bread. In the coldest weather adult males actually have feeding territories, which they defend vigorously, chasing off any rivals. In the coldest months of winter pied wagtails gather together in large groups to keep warm: there have been as many as 4000 wagtails counted in some groups. In spring wagtails can be found in nesting in tree hollows and log piles but mostly in holes in walls, gaps under roof tiles and similar spaces. The good news is that after a decline wagtails numbers are on the increase. Lakota (Lover of Nature)

WASPS
It is August and writing an article about bugs in the garden it is impossible to ignore the elephant in the room ... wasps! During August wasps are often viewed as public enemy number one as they swoop in on picnics and barbecues alike with irritable intent.
A
lthough wasps are much maligned, they eat flies, aphids, caterpillars and other invertebrates, making them an important insect-controlling predator. They are also important pollinators for some species of orchid and figs! With a mouthful of wood fibres, the queen uses the saliva in her mouth to break down the wood fibers until they form a soft paper pulp. She then flies her mouthful of paper pulp to her chosen building site to begin construction of the nest. Wasps are amazing architects and master craftswomen (all workers are female), helping to form the soft paper pulp into combs of multiple hexagonal cells. I am just an aggressive drunk and Wasp nests are home to some of our most recently unemployed addict searching beautiful, pollinating hoverflies. for a fix and I’m more in need of a social The social wasp’s lot in life is also cause for worker than a fly swatter. sympathy not swatting. The worker wasp is born into an apparent job for life – going out and foraging for grubs to feed the developing larvae in the wasp
nest which will be destined to become next year’s queens. Every time the wasp delivers food there is a reward of a sweet sugary fluid from the larva gradually addicting the worker wasps to sweetness. Then, at some point in August, the developing queens all hatch and fly the nest to feed-up and prepare for winter hibernation resulting in mass unemployment and a loss of addictive sweetness. The disenfranchised worker wasps fly off in search of substitutes often feasting on windfall fruit and exhibiting another unfortunate trend in that they are bad drunks as alcohol makes them irritable. So remember, next time a wasp bothers your garden enjoyment, it is just a recently unemployed addict searching for a fix and a very aggressive drunk, more in need of a social worker than a fly swatter.

The cat’s whiskers!
Tuesday 8 August International Cat Day is an annual celebration of one of the world’s favourite animals. As a card-carrying doglover I admit I didn’t know much about our feline friends so I was fascinated to unearth some cool cat-facts! • Cats are believed to have been domesticated in ancient Egypt. • Cats sleep for two-thirds of their lives. They usually spend 13-16 hours of the day asleep. (I am definitely coming back as a cat!) • Adult cats ‘miaow’ to communicate with humans rather than each other. • Cats use their whiskers as sensors to find out how wide a space is – and whether they can fit through it. • A cat’s heart beats two to three times faster than a human’s. • A cat’s tongue has rows of hooked scales that act like a comb to groom its fur. • Cats only sweat through their paws. • A group of cats is called a clowder. • A cat has the ability to jump up to six times its length. • Cats can detect higher frequencies of sound than dogs or humans. • Cats have powerful, tightly controlled muscles and fast reflexes that allow them to move quickly – they skilled at stalking, running, jumping and climbing. • Cats can see at one-sixth the light level required for human vision. • Cats are believed to have been domesticated in ancient Egypt. • Domestic cats purr at a frequency of 20 to 30 vibrations per second. UROCK Theatre Company comes to the Undercroft in Hampton UROCK in partnership with Eastern Angles have set up brand new drama and theatre classes for children and young people, delivering creative learning.
N
ationally recognised youth arts provider UROCK Theatre Company, has won grant funding from Arts Council England, which will allow it to relocate to the Undercroft in Hampton for a year, and work closely in partnership with Eastern Angles Theatre Company, who are currently producing exciting theatre in Peterborough: The Trials of Mary (14-16 July) and All Wrapped up In Westwood (26 October 5 November) Directed by Poppy Rowley who will also work as Artist Associate of UROCK. In September, two brand new classes/groups will start, and the local primary schools will take part in a creative project in which young children will get a taste of live theatre experience, starting with learning the vocabulary of devising and appreciating performance work, and culminating in a visit in December to Lamphouse Theatre’s production of Peter Pan. UROCK Theatre Company has previously
been based in Fulbridge Academy and have been very grateful for their support as this has allowed it to develop the quality of its youth theatre, centring on a unique ethos, and tackling a range of work, which enables every member to make real progression. Over the past 3 years it has twice been invited to perform at the National Theatre as part of the Connections Festival, and several of its alumni have gone on to successful careers in the creative industries. In September a new class entitled UROCKERS will allow children age 9+ to take part in imagined and improvised theatre. Friday evenings between 4.30 and 5.30pm in the Undercroft. This class will be fun and relaxed, with small numbers, suitable for those with some experience, but more importantly for those with no experience at all. Also, the UROCK Theatre Company are recruiting new members to join. Here anyone over
the age of 14 is welcome, and the Company will work on Saturdays, between 10.00 and 1.00, starting work on 2 new productions where students can be cast in both: A new and original youth community performance in response to The Eastern Angles “All Wrapped up In Westwood” production Directed by Poppy Rowley November 2017, which will involve research & response. UROCK Company will also participate in National Theatre Connections 2018 New writing production in February 2018 Directed by Di Goldsmith. The termly cost will be just £84, and enquiries should be made now via www.urock.org.uk or to Artistic Director Di Goldsmith direct on 07885 250443. Ensemble, a new Company for those young people already on the journey to work in the creative industries, is to be launched by Associate Creative Artist & Director of UROCK Tom Fox. Post graduates,
gap students & those who wish to learn and expand their PA CV’s 18+ Artistic Director of UROCK Di Goldsmith said “I am delighted we have won funding from Arts Council England to allow us to advocate & grow our successful physical approach and we look forward to working with Eastern Angles in a brand new area of Peterborough, Hampton. Artistic Director of Eastern Angles Theatre Company Ivan Cutting said "We have been working closely with the UROCK team for a number of years and know they deliver brilliant activities and learning for children and young people of all ages. We are delighted that Arts Council have funded this partnership which will cement our association and help us all deliver a fantastic, joined-up programme of work taking kids on a journey from primary school right through to young adulthood."

It includes water play, with small stream and water wheels, a large sand play area, a climbing tower with giant slide, tunnels, stepping stones, a sunken ship and much more. Children just never want to leave! Grassy banks provide the ideal spot to set up base or to have a picnic on warm summer days. The series is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and donations are invited to help cover the full costs.

Selling Part Of Your Garden?
The demand for new homes is greater than ever and many homeowners with large gardens consider selling part of their garden to property developers or building a house themselves. We are often asked about the tax implications of this... When you sell your only or main home any profit on the sale is generally exempt from Capital Gains Tax as a result of Principal Private Residence relief (PPR). Your ‘home’ includes your garden and grounds so long as the land is used and enjoyed as part of your main residence whilst you live there. It is possible to claim PPR if you sell just part of the property, for example part of the garden. The relief automatically applies to properties of up to 1.2 acres (0.5 hectares) in total. It is also possible to claim the relief if your plot is bigger than this, as long as the extra space is required for the reasonable enjoyment of the house. However, if you have a larger plot, HM Revenue & Customs may argue that the sale of part demonstrates the land sold was not required for the reasonable enjoyment of the property, and so seek to deny the relief. To ensure any relief is available, the land should clearly be part of the gardens or grounds and used as such until the date of sale, so it should not be separated or fenced off from the area you are going to retain. We would also recommend you keep evidence of the area being sold was used as an integral part of your garden (for example taking photographs of the garden in use). Obtaining planning permission to develop part of your garden will not automatically prevent PPR being available and this may make the land more valuable. But at the same time, please be aware that if you purchased the property with a view to realising a profit on the sale of some or all of it, PPR will not be available. Likewise if you decided to build the new house on your land and sell the completed property this could be viewed as a trading activity, meaning at least part of the profit realised is subject to Income Tax and not Capital Gains Tax. On a positive note, if you are able to claim PPR on a sale of part of your garden, this could result in the gain realised being tax free. Given the potential tax savings, if you are thinking of selling part of your garden we would recommend getting professional advice or talk to us as early as possible to ensure any necessary tax planning steps can be taken.
