Hello and welcome to the August issue of the Hampton Gazette. By the time you read this issue the school holidays will have started, it's the time of year when many of us feel that the summer has officially started! With this in mind, we have included a feature on some ideas for you to enoy in the holidays in Hampton and beyond. Also in this issue, we have an update from the Parish Council about Kat, the new Prevention Officer, who you will see out and about in Hampton. I'm sure you are all taking advantage of the lovely weather, but it is important in this heat to make sure that your pets are also enjoying it! See page 30 if you have pets, for some helpful hot weather tips. If you are heading away for a summer break you may want to check out page 13 for steps that can be followed to prevent any break-ins while you are on holiday. Please remember to mention the Hampton Gazette when contacting any of the advertisers in the Magazine or on Facebook, as without them the magazine wouldn’t be possible.

BELINDA SMITH PROMOTION
Mediation, not Litigation In family law cases it has been a requirement for a number of years now that a would-be Applicant, either for a financial order within a divorce or a Child Arrangements Order for contact and residence to your children, has first of all to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM). Unfortunately, attending this meeting, for which there is a means tested fee, is too often treated as a formality to obtain the form needed to attach to the relevant court application. No real attempt at mediation is made. But you can access mediation completely independently of any court proceedings, and this is a particularly effective way of dealing with disagreements over child arrangements between separated parents. For some solicitors, dealing with private law Children cases is a headache they would rather do without. Belinda Smith & Co has a large Children law practice and
will continue to do so. Nonetheless, we would advocate strongly that if there is any way that the parents can privately, between the two of them, resolve their issues concerning their children, which could include attending mediation sessions with an impartial professional (who does not give legal advice), that is by far the better route. Once you get to court, apart from it being a very expensive exercise if you have legal representation, positions often become polarised and the relationship between the parents damaged even further. So please try mediation first but we are here to help if that doesn’t work out.

Christ the Servant King the Parish Church of Hampton “The truth is rarely pure and never simple.” Oscar Wilde In the aftermath of a man-made disaster, we tend to crave definitive explanations. How did it happen? Who was to blame? How can we prevent it happening again? Certainty of cause and effect. Punishment of any wrongdoing. All of which, hopefully, will lead to closure. Unfortunately, clear-cut reasons and solutions are often not available, as disasters tend to have multiple contributory causes. The disastrous fire at Grenfell Tower, which cost 72 lives, will continue to be in the news as the official inquiry unfolds. The teams of lawyers representing, amongst others, the local authority, building advisors, cladding manufacturers, refurbishment consultants, the Fire Service and, not least, the residents, demonstrate how complex it will be to unravel contributory factors and levels of responsibility. Clarity regarding every aspect is unlikely. Doubts will remain. The truth will have blurred edges, however much people crave certainty. Proof of truth can be hard to come by. feelings and experience that your parent, spouse or child loves you. However, you cannot prove that to me, as I could always offer an alternative explanation for whatever you describe that they have said or done. But you know it’s true. Christian faith is like that. I know through my experience and feelings that God loves me. Jesus said he is, ‘the way, the truth and the life.’ You might point out that what I put forward as evidence could have an alternative explanation. However, the consistency of my experiences reinforces my level of certainty. Why should we believe in a God who loves us unconditionally? It adds an entirely new dimension to life, enriching the fullness of it. Come and visit us at CSK to find out more. Many Blessings, Sylvia

Staff We would like to say a fond farewell to the following staff members, Tammy Colbrook, Receptionist who left us on Friday 13 July, and Kate Whight, Diabetic Specialist Nurse who will be leaving us at the end of August. They will both be greatly missed and we all wish them well for the future.
Registrars We are pleased to welcome Dr. Cynthia Dzingina who joined us on the 1 August and will be with us for the next 12 months. Dr. Dzingina replaces Dr. Oscar Onyebuchi-Iwudibia who left us on the 31 July.
A flutter of pink announced the arrival the other day of a chaffinch in one of our garden trees. I was pleased to see him (the female is greybrown rather than pink), and was surprised to learn that the chaffinch is actually quite common, but this is the first I have seen in Hampton. I consider the chaffinch as one of our more colourful British birds, together with the goldfinch (of which there are many around Hampton), the robin and the bullfinch. The male has a black forehead and a blue-grey colour around its head and neck. It has distinctive white flashes on its wings (both males and females have these) and a beautiful pink breast. This pinkness gave rise to some of its old country names, such as pink twink and pinkery. The name it is known by today originates from the days when the chaffinch used to feed on the spilt chaff (the outer coatings from cereal grains) which were fed to working horses in their nose feeding bags: hence chaff-finch.
‘The clock-a-clay is creeping on the open bloom of May, The merry bee is trampling the pinky threads all day, And the chaffinch it is brooding on its grey mossy nest In the whitethorn bush where I will lean upon my lover’s breast;’ John Clare The male chaffinch’s song is a repetition of notes ending in a flourish and Victorians much valued it for this. They used to hold singing matches between cock chaffinches in the days before the caging of wild birds was prohibited. This unfortunate practice resulted in large numbers being caught for their song. The fact that a male chaffinch can sing his song five or six times a minute and up to 3000 times a day meant that the best singers could fetch as much as fifty shillings (somewhere around £1 500 today). Chaffinches are the longest living of our finches and due to this fact they usually only rear one brood of chicks a year; enough to maintain the overall population. They feed on seeds and insects, and if you want to encourage them into your garden then wild birdseed mixes, mealworms and suet might draw them in.
Bank Holiday Closure We will be closed for the Late Summer Holiday on Monday 27 August. The surgery will be open on Saturday 25 August in the morning only. Please make sure you have sufficient medication to cover over the holiday period! Thank you. Hampton Gazette | August 2018 | E: info@hamptongazette.co.uk | www.hamptongazette.co.uk

How to avoid the postholiday burglary blues or a domestic drama Whether you’ve booked a week or two in the sun or have planned a short family break – don’t forget to add home security and property protection to your checklist.
W
e can all greatly reduce the risk of burglary by taking a few simple security measures to help make our home less attractive to thieves. If you are considering installing or upgrading any CCTV security / lighting or alarm systems – or even changing the locks – Safe Local Trades has many reputable traders who can help across the PE postcode areas. However, as well as protecting your property from burglars, it is also worth giving some thought to preventing domestic dramas whilst you’re away.
Research has shown that around 25 per cent of Brits have come back from their holiday to a home emergency, with water leaks the most common problem by those who have been faced with an unexpected disaster. Boiler breakdowns, pest infestations, and appliance breakdowns are among some of the other unwanted homecoming dramas. Turning off the water supply at the stopcock, switching off the boiler and unplugging all electrical items before going away are sound preventative measures.
Before you go on holiday: l l l l l l l l
Cancel milk and newspaper deliveries Set up automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when it gets dark Register for the Royal Mail’s ‘keepsake’ service Cut front and back lawns and trim back plants Don’t discuss holiday plans on social media Ask a trusted neighbour to watch over your home whilst you’re away Ensure all windows and doors, gates, garages and sheds are locked Keep items that could be used to break into your property such as ladders, tools and wheelie bins stored safely away
However, if you are unfortunate enough to come home to face the holiday blues because of household crisis, Safe Local Trades has recommended professionals from electricians, bug busters, plumbers and many more at www.safelocaltrades.com

Hampton Parish Council Kat joined the Hampton Parish Council team in May and is currently getting to know the maze that is Hampton and its residents. She has been busy patrolling outside schools and educating drivers about the restrictions within the area. Kat and myself the Parish Clerk are currently busy planning a Community safety day to be held at the end of summer so watch this space for further details! There have been numerous abandoned vehicles reported to us in the past month, the majority of which Kat has been able to get have removed, the remaining are still under review. Flytipping has also been an issue and all these incidents have now been dealt with and we urge you to report any flytipping to the Parish Office at parishoffice@hampton.pc.co.uk, Kat will issue a Fixed Penalty Notice if needed and the fine for this is £80.
If any residents would like to speak to Kat regarding any issue in Hampton, please contact the office to make an appointment or please approach her when you see her out and about! The Parish Council have also approved a Parish led Neighbourhood Watch scheme to be implemented in Hampton, signs will soon be going up in a street near you! Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for further updates. At the last meeting the Councillors unanimously agreed to apply for an Article 4 Direction this would mean that any new Houses of Multiple Occupancy would need Planning Permission first, it is hoped that this would alleviate some of the parking issues faced by residents. This will soon go to public Consultation and we hope we have the support from all Hampton residents for this.
Please continue to visit our website www.hamptonpc.co.uk for meeting dates and current agendas.

THE WONDER OF ZUMBA Zumba is the most popular dance fitness programme of the past 20 years. There is no particular ‘type’ of person who does Zumba, its for everybody and every - body ... skinny, pear shaped, fit, out of shape, older and young ...
Michelle has been teaching the programme in Peterborough for almost 4 years. “People who attend my classes rave about the way it makes them feel; happy, energised and more sociable. The classes are welcoming to all and filled with energy, passion and fun,” explains Michelle.

Annual Summer Reading Challenge to keep kids reading over summer Here are some photographs of activities. The children have been taking part over the summer term, we have had lots of visitors in the setting and outings to different places around the village.
If you would like to look around and are interested in a space please contact 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk
Cygnets Pre-School This month at Cygnets Pre-school the children have been rehearsing for our end of year graduation show. We have enjoyed exploring more about the life cycle of the caterpillar and extended this by collecting wild flowers from our
garden and using out magnifying glasses to look for bugs and insects. The children and staff want to thank parents and the community for their continued support, and wish you all a happy holidays. Cygnets Pre-school reopens Wednesday 5 September.
Children should be on the lookout for Dennis, Gnasher and the rest of their mischievous gang at Vivacity libraries this summer holiday as the popular Summer Reading Challenge returns. This year’s theme is ‘Mischief Makers’ and children can complete the challenge simply by reading six library books over the summer holiday. Each book completed earns the reader a sticker and provides a clue to solve mysteries on a quest to find buried treasure in Beanotown. Kids can get a free Mischief Makers bookmark when they sign up, plus more goodies together as they progress through the challenge. The Summer Reading Challenge is a national initiative run by The Reading Agency and facilitated in Peterborough through Vivacity Libraries. Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the long holidays and the Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children nationally into libraries to keep up their reading skills. The challenge is for children aged 4-11 but younger siblings can also take part as part of the mini-challenge. Children can simply sign up as a library member to become eligible for the challenge. Library membership is free for all ages and registration takes just 5 minutes - simply head to any Vivacity library during staffed hours and speak to a member of staff. Last year over 2,000 children participated in the Summer Reading Challenge at Vivacity Libraries. Here is what some participants’ families had to say: Anne-Marie, Mum of an 11 year old said: “My son has started to drop off on his reading a bit but by doing the challenge he has discovered he really enjoys fact books. He did read a couple of fiction too and really enjoyed them.” Natalie, Mum of a 9 and 6 year old said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a lovely activity that you can share together. It’s part of our summer holidays and makes reading enjoyable in a different way. It’s one of the things we always do together.” Elaine Wilkinson, Vivacity’s Reader Development Manager says: “The Summer Reading Challenge is one of our favourite times of the year it’s great to see so many kids coming into Vivacity libraries and having fun with reading. Reading is such an important life skill. Vivacity have partnered with Peterborough City Council and the National Literacy Trust to create a ‘Vision for Reading’ in Peterborough - the Summer Reading Challenge plays a great part in this, improving children’s chances of doing better at school and in life through becoming regular readers.”
The challenge begins on Saturday 14 July and children have up until Sat 15 September to borrow and read their 6 library books. Find out more about how you can sign up to the challenge at vivacity.org/reading Hampton Gazette | August 2018 | E: info@hamptongazette.co.uk | www.hamptongazette.co.uk

MP SERVICES PROMOTION
by Pete Bird, Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants
Do you have any tax or business questions? If so, email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest, we will publish them here.
MP SERVICES Property & Ground Maintenance
Are you being charged high Accountancy Fees? Are you paying the correct accountancy fees, or are they excessive? Do you have to comply with the obligations of Self Assessment, whether a sole trader, have property you rent out or a limited company? Do you employ an accountancy firm or just one individual and are you paying the correct fees for the correct service they are offering you? We have been persuaded to write this article as it has long been known in the profession that if you instruct a large firm of accountants you will be charged higher fees that a small firm would charge. We recently were instructed by a building subcontractor whose current large firm of accountants charged him over £1,100, provided him with a full set of accounts that included a balance sheet that meant nothing to him and he spoke or dealt with a different person, not necessarily qualified, each time our fees were £360 including VAT! Obviously these fees that are being charged is quite common with accountants, but as families compare their weekly shopping bills to say high street supermarkets, so why not for the needs of an accountant? I was speaking to a car sales business recently... he said the secret isn’t what you sell it for, it’s what you buy it for... But it is always not about the size of fees, it’s the service you receive as well, like personal and friendly attention, you speak to the same person each time and receive the correct advice at all times from qualified accountants. It’s not always the size of accountancy firms and very often a misconception that you receive a better service from larger firms that small ones, we are all qualified accountants and follow the same ethics and are governed by an institute or association rules and have to adhere to practising certificates. Also to maintain a practising certificate, we have to keep up to date with affairs by attending regular courses and receiving Continued Professional Development (CPD) points. So in short, are you paying excessive accountancy fees, why not consider speaking to others or give us a quick call as you have nothing to lose? As reported in an earlier newsletter, it is an easy and common process to change your accountants.

"If you are moving home why not hire us to ensure your property is left in a neat and tidy condition for its new owners or tenants?" suggests Paul, "We can clear away rubbish, repair minor damage, repaint and give the property a full clean." If you own or manage a business MP Services will ensure the frontage of your premises looks professional and inviting to reflect your image. They offer general garden services such as grass cutting, hedge cutting, fence repairs, and garden clearance and are licenced to carry waste so you won’t run the risk of any fines. Hampton Football Club The local men’s community football team – have grown quickly since starting up in August last year. Despite this being their first season, they are already looking forward to adding another team before the next season begins later this summer. With a clear ethos of wanting to play attractive football their training sessions are designed to improve their competitiveness, but without losing any finesse. Their “carpet” football mentality has already been mentioned by several FA representatives across the county. Manager Daniel Harrington said, “The group of lads we have in the club are really focused on doing well for the club and each other. We play hard, but we also have fun with the social side, and this brings in the entire families of our players too.” The club are looking for more players, so if you are interested, or know someone who is, please get them to contact Daniel on 07525 030524 – training is at Hampton Gardens every Tuesday from 7pm – 9pm. 16+ yrs.

My young daughter Keira had been asking to get her ears pierced for a while. A friend recommended The Old Forge Hair and Beauty. When we arrived, first impressions of the salon were amazing; it was so clean and tidy, with a relaxing atmosphere and lovely décor, including candles, which gave it the perfect ambience!

Penny and Louise were reassuring and friendly, immediately putting Keira at ease. When marking the dots on her ears, Penny explained to Keira that she was checking for any bumps and just giving them a little clean. They asked me to check if I was happy with where the dots were placed and Louise was on hand too, so they could dual pierce. Saying they were just going to: ‘measure up both of the guns’, they gave each other a little nod, pulled the piercing gun and was done, it happened so quickly! Penny explained that they like to do it this way as children can get ‘butterflies’ otherwise.

LEISURE FACILITIES We were given an after-care leaflet which explained how to use cleaning lotion and my daughter received a certificate for being brave, which she was over the moon about. I remember getting my ears pierced for the first time and it lasts for life, so it is an occasion we all remember forever. I can highly recommend the Old Forge Hair and Beauty to make that experience not only safe and easy, but also extra special. Whether it’s a first time piercing or you are adding to your style, we provide a professional service in a lovely, relaxed, private setting, 5 mins from Hampton.

As seen on ITV’s recent episodes of 100 Years Younger and Real Housewives of Cheshire, threadlift treatment is fast becoming a go-to for many celebs. If you would like to reverse the signs of aging to your face, this effective, a 'non-surgical face lift' called the PDO Thread Lift, may be the best possible option outside of surgery. This unique non-invasive treatment restores natural facial balance and softens the signs of aging using absorb-able polydioxanone threads, and can be combined with other treatments like dermal fillers or wrinkle-relaxing injections to lift and rejuvenate your facial skin, resulting in a fresher and more youthful appearance. If you are put off by traditional surgery or don’t want a general anaesthetic, then a thread lift is ideal as it is minimally invasive and can be carried out with just atopical anaesthetic. The results are more effective and longer lasting than Botox and other fillers. What areas can be treated with the thread lift? Loss of volume in the mid and lower face occurs with aging, causing sagging of the skin and the appearance of jowls. PDO threads can help to lift these areas, and also in the upper face to create a brow lift. Who is a thread lift suitable for? A thread lift is most suited to men and women between the ages of 40 and 70 and most effective on skin that has minimal sagging. What are the advantages of a thread lift? Once the threads are in place, your body starts to produce new bundles of collagen around each thread and this in turn creates a subtle yet effective lift. The lifting effect is at its peak around 6 months, and lasts between two and three years.
Dr Rebecca Coates is one of the most experienced thread lift specialists in the Area. As a well-respected GP and an active member of SaveFace, you will have the security of knowing you are in extremely safe and experienced hands. There has been so much in the press lately about ‘beauticians’ operating in salons with no qualifications or experience and SaveFace is working hard to stop this. The results differ for each person but are very natural, giving a rejuvenated and refreshed look. Many women have said that they look refreshed and well rested with a lovely glow.
Be your most beautiful
A thread lift also has the benefit of a quicker recovery than traditional surgery, there is no scarring and it is much more affordable than a regular face lift.
Dr Coates will personalise your treatment at consultation to suit your needs and achieve the best possible results.

Hot weather and holidays with your pets

Hot weather and holidays will be enjoyed by many of us this summer, but it is important to consider your pets in your plans both when the weather is warmer as well as if you’re planning a trip away, with or without your pets. f your dog is lucky enough to be dog whilst many dogs love travelling General Tips Hot Weather Tips

exploring the great outdoors with you on holiday it is advisable to check with your Vet that they are protected from a wide range of parasites and not just fleas. Just as with humans, dogs will also be a tasty treat or great new home for many unwanted bugs that they may not normally come into contact with, but can easily be prevented with a spot on treatment from your local practice. Preparing for Kennels & Catteries If your pet is going into kennels or a cattery while you are on holiday you will need to check what is required by that establishment, however most will expect your pet/s to be fully vaccinated (including against Kennel Cough for dogs and Leukaemia for Cats), as well as that they are up to date flea and worming treatments. If you know you will not be contactable while you’re away, ensure you give details to both the kennels and your Vets, for who has authority to authorise treatment in your absence. Travelling with your
by car, unfortunately about a third of all dogs get travel sick, which is no fun for anyone. If you know your dog is one of the unlucky ones: l Give your pet food in plenty of time before travelling l Open a window to allow air in l Take regular breaks on long journeys and make fresh water available often l If possible encourage your dog to look out of the front or rear window, this will allow them to fix on a distant object (such as the horizon) and should reduce feelings of nausea l Speak to your local veterinary about medication, there is now a non-drowsy tablet that can be prescribed that your dog may benefit from taking l Consider use of a pheromone diffuser in the car l You should also consider whether your dog will travel in the car boot, in a crate or on a car seat, and whether a harness is required to keep them safe while on the road.
Move garden hutches and runs to shaded areas, or put a lightweight covering over to provide shade l Ensure indoor cages, crates and hutches are out of direct sunlight l Make water available from multiple sources (both indoors and outside) and check throughout the day l Apply sun block to areas where hair is thin such as tops of ears and noses (it is best to use products designed for children or sensitive skin, and you should always test the cream on a small area first and leave it for 24 hours to ensure your animal is not going to react to it) l Leave windows open, fans going and air conditioning on inside, especially if you are leaving pets alone for any period of time l Clean out litter trays and bedding more frequently l Try to avoid exercising dogs during the midday sun. Instead take them to wooded/shaded areas or take them out in the early morning or late evening when the sun is weaker l
Regardless of where you are going on holiday, if you are taking your pet/s with you or if someone else will be taking care of them for you while you are away, there are a few things that can help in all circumstances: l Ensure the contact information on your pets’ microchip is up to date. l Favourite toys, beds and blankets should smell of home to accompany your pet, rather than those that have been freshly laundered. l Provide the food they are used to having at home, this will help prevent fussy eating either while away from home or on your return. l If you know your pet is of a nervous disposition it may be worth buying a pheromone diffuser or discussing specialist food with your Vets that can help to make your pet feel safer. l Plan ahead and ensure you have enough: drinking water, food, treats, medication (if they are on any) and poo bags for your dog.
I hope you’ve found this information useful, however, if you have any questions or queries please feel free to pop in or call your local vets for more advice, and whatever you are doing this summer I hope you and your pet/s have a great time!

Care for your cat While you're not there Need help caring for your feline friend/s while you’re away? Look no further…
A
s a ‘cat person’ and cat owner myself, I know just how important it is to find someone you can trust and rely on while away from home. I understand how precious your cat is to you and I will treat your cat as if it were my own.
Services
• Feed / water / clean bowls daily • Clean out litter tray • Provide attention / tender loving care / play • Grooming • Give medication As a home owner, I have experience of dealing with issues which may arise. I am happy to water indoor and outdoor plants, move mail, put out bins, leave lights on, etc. Please ask.
Prices
My charge per daily visit (irrespective of number of cats), applicable any day of the week, including bank holidays: • £8.00 (once daily) • £14.00 (twice daily) Visits to meet you and your cat(s), collect keys or complete forms is free of charge.
About me I’m Anne and have two cats Phoebe (age 10) and Tabby (age 2). Tabby, once a frightened and temperamental stray, is now a very attentive and content domestic cat. He appeared at my house in search of food a year after Louis passed away, my Maine Coon, who had reached 17. I’ve always had a cat of some kind, whether an ordinary moggie or a pedigree, I love them all equally. I live locally, in Hampton, and am not employed in any other work so at your service morning, daytime and evening. I am happy to meet you and your cat(s) at a time that is convenient to you for a free no obligation chat about your requirements. I am fully insured and DBS/CRB checked. I have an unmarked car and I don’t wear a uniform so I’m not advertising the fact you’re away when I make my visit. You deal directly with me, not a new face each time so your cat builds up a good relationship with me. A friendly face to provide them with love and care when you can’t be there.
