Does your child enjoy drama and musical theatre? Would they like to develop their acting skills, play an instrument or sing to their hearts content?!

Local Drama Group COMING SOON!

Children’s treasures buried in time capsule at Clayburn Court Local children have spent weeks collecting treasured items to be buried in a time capsule in the grounds of Clayburn Court, Anchor’s new residential care home in Peterborough.

P

upils from nearby Hampton College (Primary Phase) took part in a competition to decide what they would like to put into the time capsule for future generations to find. Drawings, photographs and letters carefully chosen to capture the essence of modern life were buried alongside documents relating to Clayburn Court . The time capsule was buried by the Chair of Hampton Parish Council, Marion Sharp, along with 10 Hampton College (Primary Phase) pupils and the Anchor team, at a special ceremony in the grounds of the new care home on Clayburn Road. Nikki Ayliff, Home Manager at Clayburn Court care home, said: “Everyone has been looking forward to burying the time capsule as it will be an insight into life in 2015 when it is opened in 100 years’ time. The pieces collected by the children and papers relating to Clayburn Court and Peterborough will be important

historic documents when they are read in centuries to come.” Chair of the Hampton Parish Council, Marion Sharp commented: “Clayburn Court is a really valuable addition to the Peterborough community; having the care home and the primary school so close to each other presents lovely opportunities like this for the older and younger generations to come together.” Deputy Head Zoe Trigg said: “It’s been fantastic to see the children at Hampton College (Primary Phase) getting involved in this project. When considering what should be included in the time capsule, we looked at what had changed in the last 100 years and then asked the children what they thought Peterborough might look like in another 100 years. The contents reflect life in 2015 and letters and drawings written by the children to be opened by future generations.”

The local drama and musical theatre group is based in Hampton for 12 – 16 year olds. For more information, please contact Colin at YEM THEATRE GROUP T: 01733 615062

Clayburn Court Dementia Friends

W Hampton Seniors’ Social Club

T

he seniors welcomed two new people to the group last month. Twelve of us visited the Houses of Parliament;amazing, so impressed! We would like to return at a future date and do it all again. Our highlight on 2 December was some of the children from Vale School coming over to sing Christmas carols for us, always a pleasure to listen to them, a big ‘thank you’ to the teachers and children for all their hard work. Our Christmas party was in the community centre this year with fish and chips and mince pies ... and a little tipple on the side! We meet again on 6 January 2016. I look forward to planning outings and activities for the club in 2016. Wishing everyone a very happy and prosperous new year in 2016. Dianne

e would like to invite you to attend a Dementia Friends Information Session that will be running here at Clayburn Court on 13 January 2016 from 1400 – 1500. A Dementia Friend learns a little bit mvore about what it’s like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action - anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend. Dementia Friends Information Sessions are run by volunteer Dementia Friends Champions, who are trained and supported by The Alzheimer’s Society. Each information session lasts around one hour. You will learn more about dementia and how you can help to create dementia friendly communities. Refreshments will be provided and we look forward to seeing you on the day.

If you would like to attend please use this link http://bit.ly/DementiaFriendsHG to register and book your place.

C

ambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group has recently introduced a self-care prescribing policy intended to empower people with the confidence and information to look after themselves when they can, and visit the GP when they need to. In many cases people can take care of their minor ailments, reducing the number of GP consultations and enabling GPs to focus on managing patients with long term conditions, looking after the very young and the elderly and providing new services. When you visit the GP in future for advice on treatment of a minor illness such as coughs and colds, constipation and/ or diarrhoea, dyspepsia or vaginal thrush you may be provided with information and guidance on suitable self-care treatment and referred on to a local pharmacy for help and advice. As there are now an increasing range of medicines available to purchase over the counter it is expected that patients will be able to purchase such medicines after appropriate advice. Leaflets giving advice and information are available from the practice. Advice is also available from community pharmacists, NHS 111 and NHS Choices and also via The Self Care Forum, www.selfcareforum.org/fact-sheets, which provides a range of resources including factsheets on 14 key common conditions that can be treated through self-care. Please see our website www.hamptonhealth.co.uk for links to guide you to sources of advice for self-care.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Choose collaborative! There is still very little awareness out there of what the collaborative law option in divorce cases actually means. What is really needed is a celeb divorce like Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin to go collaborative, and the whole world would sit up.

A

round the country there are local groups of collaboratively trained family lawyers who meet every couple of months or so in their pods as they are called, and our Peterborough Group have recently had a re-launch, taking on the name THE BEST DIVORCE OPTIONS GROUP. Have a look on our website which can be found at www.bestdivorceoptions.co.uk. All the local family law solicitors who are collaboratively trained and keen to represent clients in their separations and divorces in this much more constructive and less stressful method, are listed. The solicitor for each spouse has to be collaboratively trained and there are a number of us around in the Peterborough and Stamford area. Instead of months of correspondence between solicitors, you have four-way meetings which can be as many or few as you choose, with agreed agendas and a signed up commitment not to go to court. The collaborative method is particularly appropriate where there are young children as it minimizes the fall out that inevitably follows from the ending of a relationship. If you are facing divorce or know somebody who is, do look us up.

have been an active member of the council since joining, helping out with the Finance & General Purpose Committee, Allotment subcommittee and last year with the VE/VJ celebrations. I am married to Amanda and have a little boy named George who will be about 18 months when this is published. We have lived in Hampton for approximately 5 years, I’m originally from Truro in Cornwall due to my old man being in the RAF. We moved a few times when I was young and then settled in Yaxley in 1984 where I spent the rest of my childhood. I ran away to sea in 2000, working for the Ministry of Defence on Navy Supply ships, travelled the world, visiting many nice places and some not so nice! I swapped my ship for a desk in Portsmouth in 2006 working in Recruitment for the same organisation for 3 years before changing jobs and heading for London where I worked until early 2013. I moved from the MoD to the Ministry of Justice to be closer to home, back here in Peterborough. One of the things that got me interested in living in Hampton, was this wonderful, green open space we have. I have always been positive with the Parish Council when dealing with issues over the open space – the community park which I supported along with the more recently completed skate park. I think most of the residents would also appreciate the hard work his recent counterpart has put in over the years keeping the Parish in good shape. Talking of litter and community involvement, I raised a question with some local groups who used to partake in litter picks to bring them together under one name to help the community. I sadly missed the inaugural meeting but back in September ’Hampton In Action’ was formed and in 2015 did picks in November & December. The picks are going to be monthly, normally the first Saturday, please check out the facebook page for more details. We have lots of issues here in Hampton, some can be solved quickly, some will take years – I see the Parish Council’s job as shaping the future of Hampton as it expands with Hampton Heights and the challenges that lay ahead when the land over the other side of the A15 is developed. If you have issues to raise, please attend the monthly full council meetings to raise them at the public forum, or get in touch with the Clerks – if we as a council are not aware, then we cant help. Hopefully you are not all asleep now, please recycle the gazette and again, wishing you all a healthy and prosperous 2016.

Hampton WI would like to wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year!

T

here is so much going on in this world of ours that plucks at the heart strings and our fears but more than ever it is important for people and communities to come together, putting aside our ignorances and prejudices. Here at Hampton WI we don’t ask about your background, your ideologies or beliefs. We just come together as women. From all walks of life, all waistbands, all hair colours and any manner of cup sizes! It simply doesn’t matter because all we want to do is enjoy each other’s company, for who we are, and to learn something at the same time. Everyone fits at Hampton WI, except men of course, unless by prior invitation! Please don’t worry about not knowing

anyone. Many ladies come for the first time worried about fitting in and here’s the secret; it’s not about whether you fit in, it’s about whether we fit you! It’s up to you. We are here, waiting to meet you! So this January do something different. Go on, go get your stretch trousers on (or not if you didn’t overindulge like me!) plus your comfiest top, come down for a cuppa and check us out. You will be surprised at just how quickly you will be laughing! We get together every third Thursday each month at CSK Church, Hampton and our meetings start at 7:30pm. Please put the dates in your diary and I hope we see you soon!

The Parish Church of Hampton

So how many Christmas movies did you get through over the festive season? I love a classic Christmas movie. Of course the big film release for December had to be Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

T

he first Star Wars film hit our screens in May 1977. There was much excitement anticipation throughout last year as fans eagerly awaited the release of “The Force Awakens.” Thirty years after defeating the Galactic Empire, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his allies face a new threat from the evil Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and his army of Stormtroopers. Good and evil are both real entities. The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds and penetrates and binds the galaxies together. It’s clear that good and evil exist not just in films. Looking back over 2015 there were many tragic

events that displayed the reality of evil in our world. Thankfully, there were also many events that displayed the good in our world. The Jedi in Star Wars looks to “the Force” for their power. When Jesus returned to heaven he didn’t leave his followers powerless. He promised “The Holy Spirit”, God’s presence with us, active in peoples lives today, a real force of power. Whatever memories you have of 2015, and whether you’re looking forward to 2016 or beginning it with concerns, why not make a resolution to join us one Sunday morning at CSK at 10am as we look to God and His power at work in this coming year and beyond?

For the wraps: • 10 large eggs • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Small handful of finely chopped fresh parsley • Low calorie cooking spray

Method:  Cook the rice according to the packet instructions then drain and keep warm.  Meanwhile, make the wraps. Crack the eggs into a large measuring jug, whisk until smooth and season with a pinch of salt. Stir in the parsley.  Spray a small non-stick frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and place over a high heat. When hot, pour in one-eighth of the egg mixture (or enough to just cover the bottom of the pan), tilting the pan to spread the egg around. Cook for 1-2 minutes or until lightly browned underneath then flip over and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Transfer the wrap to a baking sheet lined with baking parchment, cover with another sheet of parchment and keep warm. Spray the pan again with low calorie cooking spray and make another seven wraps in the same way, adding each cooked wrap to the pile.  Heat a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat, add the kidney beans, pulses and tomato purée and warm through for 3-5 minutes. Remove from the heat and season to taste.  Stir the beans into the rice and divide between the egg wraps. Scatter over the tomato, red onion and cucumber, and roll up loosely (you might need to hold the wraps in place with cocktail sticks).  Serve hot with fat free natural Greek yogurt and lime wedges to squeeze over.

Red Lentil and Caramelised Onion Soup Warming, nutritious and surprisingly filling, this soup is the perfect meal to come home to after a brisk winter’s walk.

High fibre lentils promote heart health, lower cholesterol, provide vegetable protein, stabilise blood sugar, and are rich in iron and B vitamins. We love combining these earthy gems with the deep, roasty, slightly sweet flavour of caramelised onion.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS AND STICKING TO THEM! Did you know that people have been making (and breaking) New Year’s Resolutions for more than 4,000 years? By Kate Duggan

ck! u l d Goo

Some historians believe that the practice dates back to the Babylonians. Their New Year began in springtime, with a festival dedicated to the rebirth of the sun god, Marduk. The Babylonians believed that making promises to the gods would help them start their New Year off on a positive note. The Romans kept the tradition up, although they changed the date of the New Year to January 1st. These days, New Year’s Resolutions tend to focus on self-improvement, whether it’s eating healthier, quitting smoking, or getting a new job. Millions of us make a resolution each year, but only 1 in 10 people stick to it. If your resolve is already wavering, here are a few tips to help you stay strong: Write it down. Writing down a goal and reviewing it regularly improves your chances of success by up to 95%! Involve other people. Tell people what your aim is, and ask them to help. Will your partner join you on your healthy eating mission? Do you know someone who fancies going jogging with you? Have a plan - A goal isn’t enough; you need to know how you’re going to get there. Resolving to exercise more? How many times a week are you going to work out? What combination of exercise are

14

you planning to do? Do you need to get anything in place to help you achieve your goal, such as a new tyre for your bike? Break your goal into smaller ones So you want to lose two stone by your summer holiday. How many pounds do you want to lose this fortnight? Remind yourself why you’re doing it - Do you want to make more money so that you can buy a house? Do you want to be healthier so that you can watch your kids grow up? Make it pleasurable - There are usually more ways than one to reach a goal. You don’t have to join a gym to get fit, for example; you could take up a dance class, or try karate. Keep track of your progress - Create a spreadsheet, download an app, or just celebrate each small success on Facebook. Give yourself rewards along the way Save the money you’d normally spend on cigarettes or chocolate and treat yourself with it at each small milestone. Get back on the wagon - We’re only human, so we all slip up sometimes. One fry-up doesn’t mean you also have to skip the gym. Think about why you slipped and consider how you can stop it happening again.

With the deadline for completing and submitting self-assessment tax returns online is 31 January 2016, many of you may be struggling to get the job done. We have put together a list of helpful tips and advice to help make the task more bearable. Do I need to complete a tax return? Self-assessment is not just for self-employed people. If you fall under one of the following categories, you will need to complete a tax return too: ■ You are self-employed ■ You are a company director ■ Your annual income is £100,000 or more ■ You have income from letting any property or land you own ■ You receive other untaxed income, or significant capital gains, and the tax due on it cannot be collected through a PAYE tax code ■ You need to claim expenses or reliefs ■ You or your partner receive Child Benefit and your income is over £50,000 There are also other reasons, such as being a minister of religion, in receipt of trust or settlement income, have taxable foreign income or you are a trustee. When should I start the application process? Now! You can only apply online if you have already registered. If you haven’t done this yet, you should do it now. It can take up to seven working days for HMRC to send you an activation code by post. The deadline to submit your tax return is the 31 January, so you need to start the application as soon as possible. Am I better off completing my tax return online? Besides the fact you have missed the paper deadline, there are a number of benefits to completing your return online, such as automatic tax calculation and faster tax refund if you are due one, a submission reference and not having to rely on snail mail. I am a parent collecting Child Benefit. Why do I need to complete a form? Those who earn more than £50,000 a year and collect Child Benefit will have to complete a self-assessment return. Or we can complete your tax return for you!

Safe Local Trades benefits consumers – and traders

Launched in 2008, award-winning Safe Local Trades has proved to be a huge success as a local community safety service protecting consumers from cowboy and rogue traders.

P

roviding free and easy access to a register of local recommended tradesmen, this hugely beneficial service has been greatly praised by the general public who regularly use and recommend this local website. With over 8,000 customer reviews, Safe Local Trades is the named vetted register for local Age UK branches. David Bache, CEO of Age UK Peterborough, says: “Safe Local Trades has really helped to compliment the range of services that we offer to the older and vulnerable people in our communities, by successfully providing trustworthy traders to our clients over the past several years.” Targeting the PE Postcode area, Safe Local Trades is recognised as a tried and tested service and is supported by a host of local agencies, neighbourhood watch groups, local authority services and charities across the PE postcode areas. Safe Local Trades Members have a reputation for quality, high standards and are proud to be affiliated with an organisation which actively differentiates them from rogue traders. Our commitment to member promotion and connection with customers actively helps businesses to grow – safe in the knowledge their membership brings business.

by Eileen Le Voi All of our recommended members undergo the following vetting process: • Interview • Documentation and ID review inclusive of insurances, accreditations and qualifications • Criminal record check • Customer references • Ongoing monitoring John Cranston of Cranston Plastering “Since becoming a member of Safe Local Trades, my business has continually reaped the benefits of membership. In addition to the new clients I have acquired as a direct result, my level of repeat custom has increased and I would solely survive on just working for Safe Local Trades customers, if I could. Becoming a member has been the best thing I have done since branching out on my own. Thank you for all the hard work and effort you put into both member and customer services.” Mr B Hill, Whittlesey “I have used several members from Safe Local Trades and I have been extremely pleased with the results and the service provided by them. I think this is an excellent scheme, as there are so many cowboys and rogues out there; it is a great way to source reputable trustworthy tradespeople. Thank you.”

Spotlight on Squirrels Class – Year 2

It’s difficult to believe that we are coming to the end of our first term in Squirrels class! We have certainly been very busy and our autumn term has been action packed! We began the term with our exciting new topic of Towers, Tunnels and Turrets. The children were very excited to go on a visit to Kenilworth Castle which really helped to bring the topic to life and support our learning. As part of our topic we read the story of “Rapunzel” and found out about different towers around the World as well as trying to build our own towers from spaghetti! We read the story of “The Tunnel” by Anthony Browne which led into finding out about different tunnels, listening to the story of the Great Escape and writing our own tunnel stories. The story of “The Three Billy Goats Gruff ” was the basis of our work on bridges and we acted out the story and wrote our own versions with different characters. To complete our topic we worked in groups to design and make our own fortress for “The Three Little Pigs” to keep out the big bad wolf. The fortress had to include a tower, an escape tunnel and a bridge.

The children came up with some amazing designs! Our second topic was Muck, Mess and Mixtures! It was every bit as exciting as it sounds! We began with a messy morning where the children had opportunity to explore a range of materials including shaving foam, jelly, cornflour and sand. They had a great time!! We looked at mixing different materials together and learnt how to measure capacity. The children used these skills to create potions – they almost looked good enough to drink!! We have completed several pieces of artwork including marbling, mixed media pictures and collaborative artwork based around the artist of Picasso. The children completed the topic by planning and making their own art exhibitions to display their work and the invited their parents in to come and look at their work. The Squirrels performed a fantastic class assembly to their parents celebrating all the work we have covered this term. The children are now very much looking forward to Christmas and a well-earned rest!

All the children thoroughly enjoyed the day and the Bike it Crew are looking forward to planning an obstacle course for Key Stage 1 in the summer term. They have been making Christmas cards, salt dough decorations and other crafts to take home for their loved ones. Your guide to

Living in Hampton

Beating off stiff competition, Peterborough was recently crowned Smart City of the Year 2015 in Barcelona. But what’s so clever about Peterborough and more importantly, what does this mean for people in Hampton?

Peterborough’s one smart city

E

Smart cities are gaining ground, in our imaginations and on our streets. As a constantly evolving concept, trying to define what constitutes a smart city can be somewhat tricky. But, what we do know is this: inspired by progressive thinking, smart cities are designed to promote better standards of living. In smart cities, a wide range of enhancements are made to our civil infrastructure. They tend to feature new and improved transport solutions, better urban planning, greater energy saving initiatives, and more intelligent systems for information and communication. To deliver a good quality of life, the powers that be in Peterborough have realised that smart infrastructures need to work not just for citizens, but with them. The promise of smart, sustainable cities is much more likely to be fulfilled if the people living, working and playing there are listened to and encouraged to participate and collaborate in the development of their community. Peterborough’s development of a circular economy, for example, which aims to use resources, energy and people more effectively, illustrates why it’s absolutely essential for local

people to be placed at the centre of the drive for change. It was Peterborough’s commitment to this circular economy strategy, along with its Environment Capital vision and collaborative approach to citizen involvement which convinced judges that the city should win the award. Indeed, as one of the most successful developments within the Peterborough area, Hampton needn’t hold back in taking some credit for this outstanding achievement. With its enviable reputation for safety, strong sense of community, resident involvement and a physical infrastructure that boasts excellent schools, green and open spaces, individually designed developments and popular sporting, cultural and retail facilities, Hampton has everything that most aspiring smart cities are working to achieve. O&H Hampton’s general manager, Roger Tallowin, commented: “Hampton’s characteristics have played a key part in making it possible for Peterborough to hold its head up high on an international stage. “The fact that significant issues such as environmental stewardship and community involvement helped win it for Peterborough is

testament to all that the Hamptons epitomise.” Peterborough received the Smart City of the Year award at the World Smart City Congress, on 18 November 2015. This year, the Barcelona-based congress worked with seven international experts to evaluate 265 entries from 52 countries. To give you a feel for the significance of the competition, the other major cities shortlisted for the award included Dubai and Moscow. Peterborough is now continuing to focus on growth, innovation, skills and sustainability through the Peterborough DNA Smart City programme, which is testing ideas for a smarter city, led by the economic development company, Opportunity Peterborough, and Peterborough City Council. Speaking about the award, Councillor John Holdich, Leader of Peterborough City Council, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for everyone involved and for the city of Peterborough. “The city is full of innovative SMEs and the Peterborough DNA Smart City programme supports and encourages them to work together to take advantage of new technologies and new thinking to drive growth, sustainability and prosperity.”

Acupuncture Treatments

by Dr Helen Trill

Acupuncture is one of the many therapies of Chinese medicine and is used for a wide range of health conditions.

H

ACUPUNCTURE

air fine needles are inserted into certain locations to stimulate the body's healing energy or 'Qi'. Once mysterious and misunderstood, today acupuncture is fast becoming recognised as a safe and reliable method of treatment for many conditions – millions of people worldwide have benefited. What conditions may acupuncture treat? The World Health Organisation (WHO) has produced a list of disease categories for which Traditional Chinese Acupuncture may benefit, for example: sinusitis, migraine, nausea, indigestion, constipation, IBS, high blood pressure, neck-shoulder / back / knee pain,

arthritis (both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis), muscle strains and sprains and other soft tissue injuries, PMS, irregular or painful periods, menopausal syndrome, fluid retention, skin disorders, insomnia, infertility, stroke recovery. In addition acupuncture is used for addictions to smoking or alcohol, and can for facial rejuvenation. How does acupuncture work? Our bio-energy or Qi, moves throughout the body flowing through clearly defined channels known as meridians, promoting health and resisting disease. Acupuncture seeks to correct disorders in the body by stimulation of specific points along these meridians through the use of needles.

Individualised acupuncture treatments for a wide range of health conditions

Acupuncture has been shown to raise the levels of specific hormones, prostaglandins, white blood cells, gamma globulins and antibodies generally. Acupuncture also stimulates our 'feel good' chemicals – endorphins. What happens when I come for a treatment? Your practitioner will first gather information from you about your health. The treatment itself usually involves the insertion of 6-20 fine, sterile, stainless steel needles and their retention for 30 mins. Other therapeutic techniques such as massage and cupping (creating a suction) may also be used if beneficial for your condition. Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises may also be recommended if appropriate, for example in the treatment of low back pain.

From Italy with love

FOOD & DRINK

After almost 16 years selling award-winning food from his Sub Xpress premises at Serpentine Green shopping centre, owner Peter Puntrello could be forgiven for sitting back and resting on his laurels. But, as he told the Gazette, he’s not.

L

ike any successful business person, Peter knows that standing still in this ever changing world is simply not an option. When the Gazette spoke to Peter in December, Sub Xpress was well through a period of advancement that has seen a new face lift, an expanded menu and investment in new equipment to cope with a recent growth in business. Clearly having a prime spot in the food area of a busy shopping centre such as Serpentine Green has helped Sub Xpress and Peter has nothing but praise for the centre’s new manager David Waits, who took over just over a year ago. Signage to the food court has been improved, and is constantly being reviewed and developed. With new planters to make the food court more cosy and private. With a mission to provide freshly prepared subs and Italian food Peter’s passion for his food is clear as we sit chatting in his light and airy restaurant, availing ourselves of his super comfy leather armchairs! Quieter, after the usual lunchtime rush, there’s still a steady stream of customers popping in for a late lunch, or just a relaxing coffee. Sipping an espresso, and keeping one eye on his staff and customers, Peter explains his philosophy. “It’s all about the good quality ingredients,” he says. “Our pizza dough is freshly made each day. Pasta sauces are prepared from traditional recipes, often old family recipes. The pasta is the best you can buy.” His enthusiasm is infectious. He regularly jumps up to make sure a customer is happy. And leaps behind the counter at one point to help reduce the growing queue. Warming to his theme, he talks at length – he is of Italian descent after all! – about how his pasta sauces have developed from an original strategy of buying in prepared sauces from top suppliers, to today’s situation where he makes them personally. And yes, he does actually say “like my mother used to make” at one point! After tasting them, Peter’s pride in his delicious pasta sauces seems justified. Peter uses only top quality Italian pasta. Pizza dough is freshly-made in-store. And his subs, still a favourite, are prepared while you wait, to ensure the very tastiest treat for customers. Another favourite with customers are the delicious Nutella dessert pizzas. Hugely popular with visitors to Serpentine Green, what is perhaps not so well known is that

The winning pasta dish

Sub Xpress delivers to much of the Peterborough area, allowing you to enjoy delicious subs, pastas and pizzas at home or work. Delivery is free on orders over £12. With the various special offers giving fantastic value for money. After recent changes, Peter cites a huge growth in pasta orders as evidence that his approach of responding to his customers, and ensuring that changing tastes are quickly catered for, works. Prominently displaying the wide range of pasta dishes on offer has seen existing and new customers keen to try them out! As to the future, you can be sure that Sub Xpress will not be resting on its – many – laurels and awards. With lunchtimes busy, the delivery business constantly growing, and a successful outside catering business thriving, Peter is always on the look out for the next big thing. Proud that, as he puts it, he was selling subs in the area “before Subway!”. Peter is very proud that Olympic medallist Louis Smith is a regular customer of Sub Xpress. This gives Peter confidence in his brand knowing how important nutrient is to Louis Smith.

Olympic Medallist, Louis Smith, pictured on his recent visit to Sub Xpress

Peter has recently won a national award: ‘Pasta Chef of the Year’. He was presented with the award at The Lancaster Hotel in London, by celebrity TV presenter and award winning Italian Chef Aldo Zilli. Peter had to create a unique dish, or an innovative re-imaging of a classic dish. Judges were looking for how the dish was showcased, commercial viability, flavour and appeal.

Vivacity looks to honour local legend Walter Cornelius (1923-1983) If you lived in Peterborough during the 60s and 70s you may remember local legend and strong-man Walter Cornelius. Walter, who lived his whole adult life in Peterborough after emigrating from Latvia in the 40s, made his name through the incredible stunts he pulled, breaking over 50 World Records and raising thousands of pounds for charity in the process.

H

e lived locally for many years, working at the Peterborough Lido and Peterborough City Council, and became a much-loved local personality known for his good-wit, eccentric ways and his many charitable endeavours. Since his passing in 1983 at the age of just 60 there have been many efforts made over the years to honour his memory. Vivacity, in partnership with the City Council and with support from local campaigners, has agreed to unveil a memorial to Walter Cornelius at the Peterborough Lido when it opens on Saturday 28th May 2016. Walter spent many happy years working as a Lifeguard at the Lido, teaching thousands of local children to swim. It was felt to be a fitting tribute to commemorate Walter in 2016 on the 80th anniversary of the Lido, a place close to his heart and inextricably linked with his life and achievements. The idea for a weather vane, depicting Walter flying across the River Nene (Walter’s most wellknown feat) was proposed by close friends Chris Allen and Cllr. John Fox who have campaigned for a memorial in Walter’s name for many years. A previous weather vane, depicting a bathing belle,

was removed in the 1960s, and so it is a fitting tribute to commemorate Walter and restore the Grade II listed Lido back to its former Art-Deco inspired glory. A campaign has been launched in support of this project, with £5,000 to be raised with the help of local businesses and residents in order to complete the weather-vane memorial. The working sculpture is scheduled to be unveiled by the Mayor of Peterborough, Cllr. John Peach on Saturday 28th May 2016 when the Lido opens for its 80th summer season. Jon Marsden, Director of Sport & Healthy Living at Vivacity said, ‘It is wonderful that we will at long last be able to commemorate Walter Cornelius with a fitting tribute at the Lido. It was a place close to his heart, where he was loved and admired by the thousands of families that came over the years.’ ‘We hope that the community that still remembers him will help support this worthy cause, in offering Walter and the city, a long-lasting reminder of his incredible legacy of goodwill and services to charity.’ If you would like to show your support, please go to https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/ waltercornelius to make a donation. Vivacity are

also asking those who remember Walter to post their favourite memories on the official Facebook page set up by life-long friend Chris Allen at www.facebook.com/groups/waltercornelius. A brief overview of Walter’s life in Peterborough Walter Cornelius came to England as a teenager from his native Latvia in the 1940s, escaping the Iron Curtain after rowing four hundred miles across the Baltic Sea from him homeland to Sweden as the Russians attempted to shoot him – so the story goes. The bullet wounds in his stomach were testament to the high price he paid for his freedom and for the incredible life he lived in Peterborough, the city that he loved.

Tortoise in Hampton Property Report

2015 was a successful year for the local property market. Many local families took the opportunity to move up the property chain, having been previously denied this choice since 2008.

L

ocally, the agents in Peterborough were asked to advertise 527* properties in Hampton, agreeing 251 property sales from these instructions. The interesting thing is that 48% of the properties sold in Hampton in 2015 were 3 – 4 bedroom houses, showing the demand for family homes is continually growing. According to a recent O&H Hampton resident survey showed that 60% of people living in Hampton would stay within the Hampton area which shows that many Hampton residents are looking to climb the property ladder locally.

*statistics correct as of November 2015

In 2015 we saw property prices increase by 4.2% in the greater Peterborough area. This was a welcome change to the growth rates of the last 7 years. In 2016 we expect this to continue with further predicted price increases of up to 6%. This then creates an improved sellers market as weare currently seeing record low interest rates and an easing of available credit for buyers. So what does this mean if you are looking to sell your property in 2016? Once you’ve decided to sell your house, success isn’t guaranteed! How do you make sure that your property is 1 of the 2 sold in Hampton? How do you improve this statistic? How do you make sure your property is viewed by the right buyers in a competitive marketplace? Here at Tortoise Property, we have successfully introduced professional photography, video tours & targeted social media marketing into the marketplace. With these tools we have successfully sold 3 in every 4 properties we brought to market in 2015 whilst also achieving an average sale price of over 99% of all the properties we listed in 2015. **Statistics collated from Land Registry, Rightmove & ThisisMoney.co.uk

SPORT As a lifeguard at the Peterborough Lido, Walter was loved and respected by the thousands of children that came to swim and to see some of his weird and wacky feats. Often he would walk on his hands up the Lido steps with a tray of tea balanced on his feet, bent pennies with his teeth for the kids and carried children, eight at a time on a swing balanced on his head. Over the course of his life he set 54 World Records, listed below, including balancing a 12 stone dumbbell on his head whilst drinking a pint of beer, eating 47 raw sausages in 8 minutes and 30 seconds and walking on his hands for 153 miles. However, his most famous feat was attempting to fly across the River Nene, jumping off the old Brieley’s supermarket with hundreds of local spectators lining the banks of the river to watch him – and one that would earn him £300 and a year’s worth of groceries! For days after each attempt he would be nursing his wounds, happy in the knowledge that he had raised much-needed funds for a local good causes whilst putting a smile on people’s faces. Walter was a vibrant and charismatic character, yet a simple man who led a very modest life. For many years he lived alone in a caravan on the embankment (having no family) along with his ‘strong man’ trophies and scrap books. When Walter died he had no savings, but friends and colleagues raised enough funds for his funeral and he is buried in the city’s Eastfield Cemetery.

Hampton CC Happy New Year to all! With the festivities over for another year it’s time to start thinking about getting active again. To that end, we will be commencing our winter nets in January at the Nene Park Academy on Thursday evenings from 7 until 9. We are looking for a good turnout and to start getting those bodies working again as the build-up to a new season begins. The price will be around £4 per session, with plenty of opportunity for everyone to have a bat and a bowl, so come and join in, all standards welcome. We are hoping to build on our success from the 2015 season, so if you are interesting in helping the club out in any way, as a player or with more of a background role, please do get in touch, we would love to hear from you. A Posh month for a smart looking Hempsted United! It seems Hempsted United have been having a fantastic time! Since their last update in the Gazette, the local Beaumont Way based junior club and up to 60 supporters have been welcomed to Peterborough United as guests for Posh’s Sky Bet League 1 game against Posh’s fellow promotion hopefuls, Wigan Athletic.

T

he Hempsted boys were flag bearers for the mighty Posh waving the teams out onto the pitch in front of the ABAX Stadium faithful. Travelex have joined an array of big names to get behind the junior club; the international money firm have sponsored the boys with some new tracksuits. Travelex join the likes of Amazon and the National Non-Profit Awards in helping this fantastic new club get itself off the ground. It’s great to see new community groups establish and thriving with such great support from some big organisations. Well done to all involved. Look out for the next exclusive update in next month’s Gazette!

WILDLIFE

The Wildlife of Hampton Walking through Robin’s Wood recently, I noticed the telltale signs of moles. There by the path were two mounds of freshly turned soil. They surprised me because I can’t recall seeing molehills before around Hampton.

A

t one time I thought of moles as quite large animals but upon once finding a deceased one, I realised how small they actually are; in fact, rarely longer than 15cm in length. They are apparently the only British mammal to live solely underground and in an environment where the oxygen available is only 7% of that on the surface. To enable them to survive with this small amount they have a much greater proportion of red blood cells. I thought moles were blind but apparently they are not, but have light sensitive eyes. It’s a dark world they live in though! Sensory hairs on their velvety bodies help them to find their way in the darkness. How they know which

direction they are heading in is a mystery to me though. Perhaps they are not bothered or it is of no consequence!* Their food is found within the soil and consists of, as you would expect, worms, grubs and larvae. They need to eat about twenty worms day, or half their bodyweight in order to survive. That’s an awful lot of worms to find! If they cannot find enough, through their existing run of tunnels, then they will dig new routes, thereby throwing up new mole hills. I must have been witness, therefore, I guess, to a rather hungry individual in Robin’s Wood. They can move 540 times their own body weight in soil each day, tunnelling up to 200 metres each day.

That’s a lot of tunnelling! When I think of moles I think of phrases such as ‘a mountain out of a molehill’ and Mole in “The Wind in the Willows’. The word mole itself is most likely derived from the Middle English word moldwarp, which means earth thrower. There are, of course, the usual folk remedies associated with moles, such as holding a mole in your hand until it died would endow your hand with healing powers. Hanging moles around your neck was also thought to protect you against toothache, epilepsy and rheumatism as well as other ailments. Lakota (Lover of Nature)

*Editor’s Note: Apparently moles have no external ears and have very poor eyesight, however, they have instead, excellent senses of smell and touch. Thyey also have a well developed sense of orientation retaining a mental plan of their complex layout of underground tunnels.

PETS’ PATCH

A weighty question

Veterinary advice from your local

It’s that time of year when many of us are hitting the gym or trying the latest celebrity diet to shift a few pounds before the summer sun arrives. But have you looked at your pet/s body shape with the same clinical eye?

J

ust like us, being overweight can have serious health issues for your pet and affect their quality of life. However, it’s not always obvious to us that our pet is actually overweight and pets slowing down is often attributed to them simply growing older, rather than a symptom of extra weight causing a strain on joints and muscles. Owners are often very surprised, yet overjoyed, to see an overweight pet gain a new lease of life and start displaying puppy or kitten characteristics once they have lost weight.

Is my pet overweight? Pop into any of our vets to use our walk on dog scales for weighing pets and to review the breed weight chart as a guide to what a healthy weight range might be. If you’d prefer some one-on-one attention, why not book an appointment with our nurse for the weight clinic. They will be happy to give you lots of advice, set healthy goals for your pet and help you to plan how these can be achieved.

Our FREE Weight Clinic appointments include: Pet history and lifestyle assessment Body scoring and assessment of goal weight Action plan of how to reach goal weight Food, meal sizes & frequency Rewards, toys & treats Activity, exercise & play We aim to assist you in helping your pet to lose weight at a healthy and controlled rate of around 1-3% per week. This is accomplished through changes in diet, portion control, non food related rewards, plus a plan for exercise that suits your lifestyle. For example, you wouldn’t walk a cat and not all dogs are willing to go out in the rain, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have physical activity inside (without leaving a trail of destruction) Distract your pet from having too much food by giving it to them via a dispensing toy, their food will take longer to eat as they have to figure out how to get at it In multi pet households it maybe useful to feed pets separately and/or not leave food down for grazing.

Note. If your pet has not been seen by a Vet at our practice within the last six months we may request a health check consultation with a Vet prior to a weight clinic appointment.
