What is Alpha? It could just be the start of the greatest adventure of your life Alpha is a chance to explore and question the meaning of life, over a series of weekly sessions. It's really informal and you can ask anything you like (which is why over 24 million people worldwide have already done Alpha). We’d love you to join us at Hampton Vale Community Centre for our Alpha Launch Party on Tuesday 28 January, an evening of fun, food and an opportunity to find out more about the Alpha course.

Rhymetime Our regular Rhymetime group meets every Friday from 10–10.30am. It is completely free with no need to book, simply drop in and sing some old favourite nursery rhymes, and maybe learn some new ones! Great for babies and nursery age children, but all are welcome.

Magic Themed Storytime Wednesday 19 February Our free Storytime session will include a magical craft! No booking or fee required, just turn up. Job Club

Shop Local in 2020

By Anne McCarthy

Thinking about taking that next step in your career? Maybe you’re looking at getting back into work? Hampton’s job club runs every Friday from 9.30–11am and can help you polish your CV and find that perfect job!

Why?

Unique Products A national chain will sell hundreds or thousands of identikit products. Local stores sell unique merchandise in smaller numbers so you will buy something truly individual.

Chatterbooks Saturday 8 February

Hampton Book Club Hampton Library is currently looking at launching a book club for adults! The books would be provided and the meetings would likely be one Monday a month at 2pm (to be confirmed).

Our children’s book group (for kids 6-11) meets on the second Saturday of every month from 11.30am–12.30pm. We’re always looking for new members. No booking or fees, just turn up and discuss what everybody's been reading, along with crafts and games.

This is your chance to shape what you want out of a group at the Library. To register interest, email hamptonlibrary@vivacity.org, call 01733 864538, or speak to a member of Library staff.

Storytime Get lost in a story at our regular Storytime group, every Wednesday from 3.45–5.15pm. We have a selection of picture books both classic and modern, and each week we try something different. No booking or fee required, just turn up with your little ones!

Personalized Service A small business owner will go the extra mile to make you happy. Local businesses are owned by your neighbours and friends. They care about you and are invested in your community.

It supports the arts Small local businesses support creativity! Look for art on display created by local artists. These are one-of-a-kind pieces you won't find anywhere else. It helps the local economy The money you spend in a local business stays within your town and community, thus improving its future.

How? Instead of purchasing items from national chains, try to purchase things from a business local to your area. Buy a gift or a gift card at a local business in your area and give to a friend, family member, or co-worker. This will introduce the company to someone new and allow for the “shop local” mantra to spread. Promote their business! If you like a particular shop or independent restaurant share and like their social media accounts. Spread the word. Give them a great review. Send them a thank you. Say why you love them and let them share your testimonial.

January can be one of the coldest months of the year and for wildlife it can often be a fight for survival. So anything we can do in the way of support will mean that more wildlife will make it through the winter months. It can be difficult for them to find food when the ground is frozen or covered in snow so providing food is one relatively easy way to help them survive. Different types of birds have different choices of food: sparrows and finches prefer wild bird seeds; blue tits, goldfinches and chaffinches like peanuts whilst robins are attracted by mealworms. The RSPB make the point that birds need highenergy (high fat) foods during cold conditions in order to build up fat reserves which help them to survive the frosty nights. Around the Hampton area I have noticed that the prices of wild

bird food varies considerably. There is no need to pay a great deal if you can find cheaper alternatives. Quite often QD in Orton, Poundland, and sometimes Wilcos, sell small bags of mealworms for just a £1. I have also bought wild birdseed in sacks for around £7 in Pets at Home. Other local garden centres quite often sell suet balls for 99p for six: cheaper ways of buying food for the birds can be found. Cheap feeders can also be found if you look around (I saw one in QD Orton for 99p). These should be positioned in such a way that cats cannot climb any

where near them. If you don’t have trees in your Hampton garden then a pole with a hook can either be bought or made. The poles can then be pushed into a lawn and cats will be unable to climb them. If you can provide water in a bowl, with a small floating ping pong ball (to stop it freezing) then this will provide drinking water when icy conditions descend. Providing food and water in this way will make a huge difference to Hampton bird life and could mean the difference as to whether some of them survive or die this winter.

Self Assessment Tax Returns for 2019 With the deadline for completing and submitting selfassessment tax returns online for 2019 (2018/19 tax year) is 31 January 2020 and many of you may be struggling to get the job done. We have put together a list of helpful tips and advice to help make the task more bearable. Do I need to complete a tax return?

There are also other reasons, such as being a minister of religion, in receipt of trust or settlement income, have taxable foreign income or you are a trustee Circle Please note this list is not exhaustive. Circle

Self-assessment is not just for selfemployed people. If you fall under one of the following categories, you will need to complete a tax return too: Circle You are self-employed Circle You are a company director in receipt of dividends in excess of £2,000 Circle Your annual income is £100,000 or more Circle You have income from letting any property or land you own Circle You receive other untaxed income, or significant capital gains, and the tax due on it cannot be collected through a PAYE tax code Circle You need to claim expenses or reliefs Circle You or your partner receive Child Benefit and your income is over £50,000

When should I start the application process? Now! You can only submit your tax return online if you have already registered and have a unique tax reference (UTR). If you haven’t done this yet, you should do it now. It can take up to seven working days for HMRC to send you an activation code by post. The deadline to submit your tax return is the 31 January, so you need to start the application as soon as possible. Or we can complete your tax return for you!

Hampton College It has been a busy run up to Christmas at the College. Alongside the usual festive events running in the College, students and staff have been busily engaged, in numerous activities. Mrs Johnson and Mrs McAlister went to the Town Hall to receive their Carer Friendly Tick Award from the Mayor. It was a wonderful morning of celebration with community and business leaders, which celebrated the work they do with all the young carers across the College. One of our young carers, Jack accompanied them to receive their award and gave a moving account of his personal experiences of being a young carer. We are really proud of the fantastic work they do for the young carers in both the primary and secondary phases. Students from Ms Thompson’s Tutor Group were rewarded for achieving the SLT Award for gaining the most Houseopoly positive points, which they did in record time. Students receive a variety of positive points for participation, partnership and behaviour throughout their time at the College, which build into various levels of reward. Students enjoyed a special lunch of pizza and chips in the Dining Hall, served by Mr Gilligan. Students have also been participating in the Houseopoly Hamper Challenge which raises supplies for the local Foodbank. Each form designed and decorated a hamper, filled it with food and non-perishable items. These

were donated to the Foodbank just before Christmas to make a more festive Christmas for a worthwhile cause in our local community. Students have enjoyed the popular annual Christmas lunch. Over 300 students enjoyed a full Christmas roast and either Christmas pudding or chocolate brownie, alongside crackers, served to them by staff and governors. We have been busy raising money for Save the Children in the Christmas Jumper Day. A wide variety of flashing and glittery jumpers were seen around the College, which helps to raise money for children around the world. The end of term saw the annual Certificate Presentation Evening, which celebrates the academic, vocational and personal successes of last year’s Year 11 and Year 13 students. The evening was a fantastic success, with a moving speech from our guest speaker Musharaf Asghar from Educating Yorkshire. Prizes were given to students for their varying successes whilst at the College. It was a wonderful evening, full of students, parents/carers, staff, governors and local community members celebrating the success of our students. Students from across the Hampton community joined together for an evening of

celebration of the arts for the Winter Festival. Children from Vale, Hargate, Gardens and our primary and secondary phase were involved. It was a lovely festive atmosphere and a wonderful continuation of our festive celebrations. Students have also enjoyed several trips this month. The Year 11 students went to London to see the Woman in Black as part of their English coursework. Year 12 Aspire A* students recently visited Jesus College Cambridge, where they were introduced to what life at Cambridge University is like and what to expect. They then had a tour from a range of student ambassadors, lunch in the Formal Hall, workshops to see the wide variety of courses that are on offer. The day was really informative and gave our students the opportunity students to reflect on subjects that they enjoy as well as where this may take them in the future. The Year 10 Football team have enjoyed great success. As part of the English Schools Football Association, they went to London for the day to play Forest School in Walthamstow. The boys played a great game and won 4-1. The next round is for them to play against AMVC.

Hampton Mini Movers

Happy New Year to all our Mini Movers and their families! We hope you have had a lovely festive break and are now raring to come back to our Monday afternoon sessions!

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School Firstly on behalf of us all at Little Acorns, we wish you a very Happy New Year. Welcome to all the new families joining us over the next term.

We would like to say a big well done to the preschool for their fantastic performance in the Christmas nativity play. We are very proud of you all! The children enjoyed their trip out to the Pantomime to see Cinderella; they had great fun and enjoyed the bus ride too! We are looking forward to lots of exciting plans for the New Year; we will be inviting parents to join us for lunch and trips out to visit the local community.

If you haven't been to us, but have been meaning to, then why not come along to a session? Make it a New Year resolution! If you are a parent, grandparent or carer with a child from Newborn to Reception age, then come along on Monday afternoons (term times) to our stay and play sessions, 1.15pm till 2.45pm at the Hampton Vale Community Centre. It’s just £1 per family so it’s easy on your purse after the recent festivities and that includes a snack and drink for the children and a tea or coffee and biscuits, and usually a slice of cake too for adults. Where else can you get that for £1? The children get to play with lots of others, there are crafts and toys and a group singalong at the end. Plus adults get to enjoy some adult conversation so come along and meet us. The sessions are run by volunteers from KingsGate Community Church. Contact Rachael 07983 421139 for more info, or just pop along, we would love to see you!

Hampton College Primary Phase ‘Twas the week before Christmas, when all through the school, All the children were laughing, a Christmastime rule. All their stockings were hung in the foyer with care, In hopes that the holidays soon would be there. The teachers were busy with craft on their minds, And hoping the children would remember their lines. The glitter, the sparkle, the shimmer, the shine, “Please let this Christmas turn out all fine!” When out in the playground there arose such a clatter, And out rushed Mr Jones to see what was the matter. The snow began falling to the children’s delight, And the teachers raced out to a carpet of white. The last days of term, the carols and songs, And a holiday from school, a whole two weeks long. When, what to our wondering eyes should appear, But the 7th of January, so quickly it’s here. A new term can start, so lively and quick, 2020 is a date that will stick. The winter is here in the primary phase, And January starts in a number of ways. New topics, new learning, new focus, new drive, On children, on teachers, on parents, we strive, To give of our best as the new year starts, With a feeling of pride in ourselves, in our hearts. As the new term begins and the children return, With excitement of all the new things they will learn. So into the classrooms with glee they all flew, And the teachers, TAs and other staff too. And then, in our classrooms, the teachers decreed, “You all will be writing and loving to read. And counting and adding and taking away, And working together, with fun as we play”.

If you would like to come and have a look around and are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacornsdaynursery.co.uk

So one term has gone, and to the next one we look, With excitement and joy written down in our book. “So celebrate, celebrate, celebrate all, Now on with the learning!” the teachers do call.
