Over the 9 years we’ve been running the event, we have seen it grow, from under 100 visitors and a small gazebo, to over 1,350 attending last year!
The event is organised and solely funded by KingsGate Community Church as we have around two hundred members living in Hampton and feel this a great way for us to bless our community. The whole event is totally free and starts by registering at Hampton Vale Community Centre any time between 10am and 12pm. You will then be sent off to look for clues around a trail through Hampton. Along the way you will be able to join in ‘Wellie Wanging’, 'Space Hopper Racing’ and other fun activities!
All children under 16 will be awarded a chocolate egg on completion of the trail. Face painting, temporary tattoos, a bouncy castle and refreshments can also be enjoyed at the Community Centre afterwards. So, bring your friends, neighbours and family and join in this fun community event!
We’d love to ! see you there

Easter pancakes! Easter is so late this year that it’s made Pancake Day (normally a welcome celebration in the middle of a cold February) as late as 5 March, so I am now feeling like a very overdue round of pancakes! Drop in at our coffee shop any time between 5:30 – 7:30pm on the day for a free pancake. Chimes will also be open late with its usual range of drinks. Shrove Tuesday, as it's traditionally called in the church calendar, marks the beginning of Lent - a 40-day season of preparation before Easter. In the past I’ve given up most things, from Facebook to chocolate, but this year, I’m taking something up and want to encourage you to try it. The Church of England has (slowly!) modernised and produced an app (Android/iOS) for Lent, called Lent Pilgrim. Every day, there’s a short Bible reading, mini reflection, prayer, and lastly, a call to an action/thought for the day to encourage you to make a life-impacting change. It’s based on a bit of the Bible called the Beatitudes - sayings from Jesus’ most famous sermon - where he turns the world’s logic on its head, when it comes to what being truly blessed actually looks like. Follow along with the app (paper copies are also available for £2 from church) if you want to look more deeply into who Jesus is and why he came. It’s easy to do in a 10-minute tea break, or on your bus ride into town. Join in and see if you can discover more this Lent.
Call our church office on 01733 248 236 for further information.
Hampton Seniors Spring id on the way and, hopefully, some warmer weather to look forward to. I have been able to extend the date for spending the rest of the lottery award to the end of April. I am looking into a day out to Walpole Hall, possibly in May/June, but nothing decided yet, I will look at dates/ timings etc and post on here with a definite arrangement. Well done! Well done to Hampton residents Tuya Cowell and Oggie Wentworth who ran 10km in the London Winter Run on Sunday 3 February. Along with over 20,000 other runners they braved the bitter cold to run in aid of Cancer Research UK. Our two girls raised well over £1000 between them.

Come and talk to us – your first meeting is free A Pre-Nuptial, or Pre-Marital Agreement as it can be known, does not usually feature very highly on the list of the happy couple’s wedding arrangements.
T: 0844 8806383 E: enquiries@vigargroup.com
But if you are planning to marry some time soon, you could give some thought to the good sense of drawing up a Pre-Marital Agreement if either of you feels uncomfortable in any way about the prospect of an equal sharing of your assets if you did ever have to go your separate ways. This doesn’t have to put a dampener on the joyful occasion. Look at it as a form of insurance against a worse case scenario. The brutal fact is, it has to be said, that one third of marriages end in divorce so this is an insurance policy that could prove useful. Pre-nuptial Agreements have been steadily gaining status in the family law of England and Wales over the last couple of decades. Provided an agreement is entered into freely by both parties with full knowledge of the assets involved and the implications of committing to its terms, it will take precedence over the usual principles of equal sharing on divorce applied by the courts. Pre-nups are popular with those marrying for a second time (or more!) but they are available to anyone. To ensure a pre-nup is effective, both of you should consult your own specialist solicitor. Happy wedding bells!

The Exotic Pet Refuge needs your help By Michelle Hall We are a small local charity that cares for all animals whether they are exotic or one of our British wildlife are in desperate need of money to help them though the winter months. The Exotic Pet Refuge, situated in Deeping St James, is one of the few places in the country to rescue exotic animals such as racoons, monkeys, owls, meerkats and reptiles. It is part of your local community and it needs your help. Our electricity bill alone is around £2,000 a month due to all the exotics that need the heat. Benny really suffers in the cold. His previous home was a concrete pillbox in someone’s garden with no heating or outdoor enclosure. He is one of the oldest monkeys at the Refuge, but he is not on his own with his need for heating. We have just taken in two families of meerkats each consisting of a mother and four babies. These also need heated accommodation not to mention all the reptiles that we have in our care. We do offer animal experiences, they would make a great Christmas present for an animal lover in the family. How about sponsoring one of our animals for the year? It’s only £25. We have also set up a JustGiving page. Whether you are a farmer that can donate us some food, a shop or school that can collect food in a basket for us, a group of people that can fundraise for us or just a person that can donate a few quid to us. Whoever you are, the animals and the people at the Exotic Pet Refuge say “Thank you”. Mild Winter Cold March Last March saw a late deluge of snow and cold weather, following an extremely warm and mild winter, ahead of a hot and dry summer. Such abrupt temperature fluctuations can often create problems for wildlife. A spring that had been in full swing was abruptly halted and then slowly caught up on itself again; creating some strange occurrences of plants flowering together when usually one follows the other. This winter has also had a long warm spell with reports of active worker wasps coming through in January. If winters continue to be warmer without cold spells we could end up similar to the north island of New Zealand where wasp nests never die out but grow year on year, reaching several metres in diameter. Our bees would also need to be active all year round and face winter starvation if the flowering plants do not adapt with equal alacrity. This is the month when most gardeners set to work again; it is time to start planning to provide that all year round buffet for our precious pollinators, but be prepared to shelter bugs from an early March freeze.

Cormorants Seen quite often on Serpentine Lake are the black outlines of upright cormorants. Although these birds can be found on inland lakes, we tend to associate them more with coastal areas. They do, however, add to the wonderful range of bird species there are on this Hampton lake. I suppose it’s the curved short neck and their colour that marks them out, and their size: they have a wing span of nearly a metre. They are members of the pelican family but you can’t really tell this from the shape of their beak, which doesn’t have the obvious sagging pouch that a pelican has. Their diet is, however, similar, being of fish, molluscs and crustaceans. For these they dive beneath the water, often as deep as 30 metres, and for around thirty seconds on average. It has been found that they eat mostly flat fish and eels, rather than salmon and trout, for which fishermen have persecuted them for eating. In some areas, though, there are strong campaigns to remove cormorants, due to the belief that they deplete the fish available for anglers. They can often be seen with their wings stretched out. Some think this has more to do with creating space around themselves, rather than drying
them out. Although the British Trust for Ornithology say that their plumage is not waterproof, so perhaps they are airing and drying. Interestingly, in the Far East in countries such as China and Japan, cormorants have been trained by fishermen to catch fish. This practice has been carried out for thousands of years. It’s worth looking at a clip of this on the BBC website (www.bbc.co.uk - Wild China). This practice may be linked to the idea that cormorants are a symbol of good luck for fishermen: one that will bring them a bountiful catch. Cormorant stories are found in several cultures. For example, in the Greek tale of Ulysses he was saved by a cormorant when the mast of his raft broke and he had to swim ashore. In Polynesia Maru-tuahu used feathers to make himself ‘as handsome as the crested cormorant.’ In Liverpool the Liver Birds, the symbol of the city, are thought to be a cross between a cormorant and an eagle, and according to aboriginal legend cormorants are messengers.

With the arrival of spring, there is plenty to do in the garden in March. The days are longer and warmer, hopefully the risk of frost will have passed by the end of the month, and there are plenty of jobs to do in the garden, greenhouse and vegetable plot. Seed sowing really starts to get underway and you’ll want to plant roses and lift and divide perennial plants. By now you should be seeing several spring bulbs flowering in your garden as spring begins to take hold. Daffodils should be blooming in abundance, brightening up their surroundings. As the days begin to lengthen slightly, you are now able to spend a little more time out in the garden. With the sun shining stronger, its warmth can be felt and the plants respond according; sadly so too do the weeds so you need to make sure that you remove them before they take hold. Deciduous trees and shrubs can be planted until the end of the month. Newly planted trees and shrubs should be top dressed with compost or manure. If you are able to use your own home made compost then do so. Remember to prune any shrubs damaged by frost and to prune all roses ideally before any new growth appears. Some seeds of summer bedding plants can be sown now. Some will benefit from first being started off in pots or trays in a greenhouse, whereas, others can be sown directly into the open ground. Sow lettuces, tomatoes, salads and cauliflowers under cover. Outside, you can sow peas, carrots, beetroot, summer and autumn cabbages, herbs, leeks, spinach, turnips, spring onions, broad beans, Brussels sprouts and parsnips. This is also a good time to start planting out early potatoes, onions, garlic and shallots. In the greenhouse, also pot up young bedding plants. You can start to grow French and Runner beans in pots. Dahlia tubers can also be started in pots, remember to take cuttings as they begin to grow. Planting of fruit trees should also be completedthis month.

Hardy Annuals
By Rachael Leverton
Hardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t they? But annuals, by their definition, don’t. In fact, the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds. Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now. Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal credit-crunch plants. They are also easy-togrow, so are brilliant for beginner gardeners. For best results sow them as thinly as possible, cover lightly with sifted soil then firm it down. Protect them from cats and birds with netting until the seedlings are well established then thin them out to the distance recommended on the packet. Good flowers for the annual-novice include poppy, calendula, larkspur, fried- egg plants (limnanthes), love-in-the-mist, clarkia and cornflowers. If I could grow only one it would be Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist). It’s an old cottagegarden plant and ‘Miss Jekyll’ is a beautiful, soft, pure blue variety with the added bonus of stripy seed pods once the flowers have faded. The king of the hardy annuals though has to be the sunflower. Children particularly love to grow them. Sow them singly in small pots or directly into the earth. If you sow them directly,
plant two seeds into each hole and thin to one once they are established. They may need to be staked as they grow. There are some terrific varieties. A favourite of mine is Prado Red, which as the name suggests, produces deep red flowers. If you pinch them out, they‘ll grow to five feet and produce numerous blooms on each plant. If sunflowers are the kings of the hardy annuals, then sweet peas are surely the fragrant queens. Old-fashioned or antique varieties tend to be best for scent though their flowers are slightly smaller. The great thing about sweet peas is that you have to pick them to prolong flowering so you have a wonderful excuse to have a fragrant home all summer long. Sweet peas should be planted a little deeper than other annuals. They are very thirsty flowers. My granddad used to line his sweet pea trenches with lots of wet newspaper. He won prizes for his blooms, so he obviously knew a thing or two about it. Next time you’re at the garden centre...walk right on by the showy (and expensive) potted plants and head for the seed section. For a very small outlay you can add colour, shape, interest and completely transform your plot ...and if you don’t like it, you can always change it again next year. Happy gardening!

Money Matters
Working from home
claim tax relief for your expenses by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
An increasing number of employees work from home some or all of the time. Where they do so, they may be able to claim tax relief for the costs that they incur from working at home, regardless of whether their employer meets those costs. Nature of expenses Where an employee works from home, they can claim tax relief for the extra costs that are incurred as a result of working from home. This may include the cost of phone calls from the landline, the costs of electricity and gas to heat and light the workspace, power the computer, and the cost of cleaning the workspace. Wholly, exclusively and necessarily incurred The rules on claiming tax relief for employment are strict; relief is only available for those expenses incurred wholly, exclusively and necessarily in the performance of the duties of the employment. This is a difficult test to meet. Mixed business and private use Tax relief is not available for expenses that have both a work and a private element. This may prevent a deduction for, say, the cost of broadband which is used for both by the family for private use and also for work use. Likewise, no deduction for rent would be permitted unless a room was used exclusively for work, in which case a proportionate amount could be claimed. Voluntarily working at home To be allowed to claim tax relief for additional expenses incurred as a result of working from home, the employee must be required to work from home, rather than doing so voluntarily. Under the letter of the law, the employee should be working at home because the duties of the employment demand it, rather than as a matter of personal choice. However, from a practical perspective, if the employee’s contract requires that the employee works from home, either part time or on specified days or when required to do by the needs of the job, tax relief should be forthcoming. Employer meets the expenses Many employees will be able to reclaim the additional costs of working from home from their employer. If the expenses are such that the employee would be eligible for tax relief, the tax exemption for paid and reimbursed expenses comes into play and the employer and employee can both ignore the reimbursement for tax purposes – there is no tax to pay and nothing to report. Keep it simple To avoid the need to keep records and work out the additional costs of working from home, employers can pay a tax-free allowance of £4 per week (£18 per month) to employees who work from home. The amount is the same regardless of whether the employee works at home one day per week or five days a week. It may be possible to pay a higher amount if this is agreed with HMRC.

Sometimes we all need a real natural boost to help us lift our spirits Serotonin is a chemical that nerve cells produce and sends signals throughout your body. This naturally makes you happier, reduces anxiety and improves sleep quality. Here are some super healthy recipes containing bananas, lentils, chicken, turkey and chocolate that all help boost the production of Serotonin and the release of endorphins. This will lift your mood, improving your well-being and help you to feel happier”

What the Doctor ordered The rise and fall and rise of the Dr. Marten boott When you read the words Dr Martens, what do you think of? Skinheads? Clowns? Workmen? Or high fashion? Because in spite of being associated with all the groups above, Dr Martens have remained one of the most consistently cool items of clothing in the past 50 years. They really were invented by a doctor too, Dr. Klaus Maertens, a German army doctor. He injured his foot while skiing and found standard issue WWll army boots very uncomfortable and not at all conducive to recovery. So, he designed his own shoe, which replaced the leather soul with one which had air-cushioning. Originally the boots were sold as orthopaedic devices and bizarrely the majority of its customers for the first fifteen years were housewives, mainly over forty years old. But then an advert for the boots with the air-cushioned sole caught the eye of the Griggs family, who ran a shoe company in Britain,
by Sarah Davey
specialising in sturdy work boots, and they bought the patent. They made a few tweaks to the design, including reshaping the heel, and they also anglicised the name. The classic yellow-stitched Dr. Martens AirWair boot was launched on April 1st, 1960. The date gave rise to the name 1460. This footwear was no April Fool joke though. The boots quickly became popular with factory workers, postmen and police officers. But these were not the kind of people known for inspiring fashion choices so how did Dr. Martens become so cool? It started with youth subcultures, like Mods and Skinheads, who adopted the boots as symbols of working-class pride. There was some irony in the fact that when these groups clashed with police BOTH sides were wearing Dr. Martens! Pete Townsend of The Who is generally credited with giving Dr. Martens international exposure,
when he chose to wear them on stage at concerts. From about 1966 they began to gain fashion status, generally by groups who associated themselves with ant-establishment values. Punks, Goths, New Wave and Grunge groups all embraced the Dr. Marten, and they gradually became more mainstream with Britpop. But by the new Millennium sales were dropping. The Dr. Marten 1460 was seen as old. Eventually the company moved production to China.
In 2004 a new line of footwear was introduced, deliberately designed to appeal to younger buyers. They were softer, easier to break in and had a translucent heel. This paid off and sales began to climb again. In 2012 Dr. Martens had its best year for sales ever. Shortly after they were sold to the investment firm Permira, and have continued to rise in popularity ever since, becoming a mainstream wardrobe staple. I wonder what the original Dr. Maertens would make of all that!

Neighbourhood Watch scheme The Hampton Parish Council has recently funded a Hampton wide Neighbourhood Watch Scheme As you know Neighbourhood Watches schemes are popular worldwide and, in many places, they work fantastically well, however in Hampton the schemes weren’t working as well as they could be. I volunteered for Neighbourhood Watch during my time studying Criminology and know how difficult it could be to get residents involved in the scheme, I also understand that people don’t always have the time to attend meetings and may have other priorities such as working, childcare family life etc. So, I started to develop a new Neighbourhood Watch Scheme that fits Hampton better, this would
involve no meetings, no costs for residents to purchase street signs and utilising the people that are out and about on the streets of Hampton daily, such as the lengthsmen and PES Officer. Information is reported back to me and then onto the police if needed or dealt with by the PES officer. To prevent residents skipping important emails, information that is specific to Hampton is circulated through the Parish Website and Facebook Page and so if theres a recent crime in your area, you may see an alert to ensure your windows are locked or that any ladders are locked to prevent intruders accessing the upper floors.
Neighbourhood Watch in Hampton To ensure that this scheme works as efficiently as it can, Residents need to report any issues to me the Clerk at Hampton Parish Council. This could be suspicious activity in the area, cars parked where they shouldn’t be, Antisocial behaviour, graffiti, littering. the list is endless. By reporting this, we can then make sure its logged and reported to the correct service to be dealt with as quickly as possible. I also have some street signs that are free to residents who wish to put one up in their street, please contact me at parishcoffice@hamptonpc.co.uk

Mothers’ Day Musings 31 March is Mothers’ Day and I wonder if I’m the only mum who finds it irritating? Kath McLea I mean, I love flowers and chocolates as much as anyone, but I value them more when they come ‘just because’, rather than because Clinton Cards emailed a prompt. And don’t get me started on Primary schools and their ‘Mothers’ Day mornings. Rearranging my working day so my child won’t be disappointed by my absence is stress I don’t need…I thought Mothers’ Day was supposed to be about me! No, Mothers’ Day feels phoney. My husband is a hands-on dad, who knows how to cook and wield a vacuum cleaner; but if I didn’t remind him about Mothers’ Day he’d forget, and so would the kids, because he wouldn’t remind them. Last year I didn’t remind, they forgot, then they all felt bad, which wasn’t my aim, because I didn’t care. So, we had a chat. I told them I knew they loved me, and Mothers’ Day wasn’t important to me, but perhaps each of them could pick a time when they did something little and nice for me, when I least expected it, and tell me it was for Mothers’ Day. I don’t think I expected much to happen, other than to free them (and me) from social pressure, but a few weeks later my 12-year-old left a dark chocolate Bounty Bar on my desk one evening (food of the Gods and difficult to find!), with a little post-it that read ‘For Mothers’ Day because I know it’s your favourite’; and a few weeks after that my nine-yearold drew me the most beautiful picture of a dragon because he knows I like dragons. Somehow those gifts felt more real than any I’d received before. I’ve not mentioned it again this year. Maybe they’ll remember, maybe they won’t. Maybe I’ll get another dark chocolate Bounty…I won’t complain.

Hampton College Hampton College Girls U15 team won the Peterborough Schools 9aside competition at Nene Park Academy recently, with a brilliant performance by all the girls. The team won all four league games vs Kings, OBA, COPA and Queen Katherine Academy and then went on to beat Stanground on penalties in the semi final and beat Kings again in the final 1-0 to lift the trophy. Amazingly, the team didn’t concede a goal in the whole tournament. A fantastic achievement. Congratulations to Callie, Mellisa, Renai, Katie, Chelsea, Charlotte, Alyah, Megan, Chloe, Katie and Ellie. The College’s new Intervention Teacher, Mrs Baron is now offering students in Years 10 and 11 the opportunity to use a new facility 'The Bridge'.
The Bridge and is available Tuesdays and Fridays at lunch and after school for those students who wish to come and do homework or revise and will hopefully will offer a positive learning experience for our students to assist them with their exams. Over 40 Hampton College students recently participated in National Young Carers Day. The Young Carers Trust helps support young carers and young adult carers by supporting their mental health, which is often affected by the pressures of their caring role. Hampton students helped to raise public awareness of the mental health support needs of young carers and are supporting the #CareForMeToocampaign run by the Young Carers Trust #YCAD

Dinosaur Cove: Charge of the Three-horned Monster by Rex Stone Despite being extinct for 65 million years, dinosaurs still have the power to enthral young children and this series of books is sure to be popular with young readers who are building up the confidence to read alone. Jamie has recently moved to the south coast of England with his dad and into an old lighthouse with his grandad. Jamie’s dad has
plans to turn the ground floor of the lighthouse into a Dinosaur Museum as the local area, known as Dinosaur Cove, is rich in Jurassic and Cretaceous fossils. However, what Jamie doesn’t expect to find is a hidden entrance to Dinosaur Island where there are real living dinosaurs. In this adventure Jamie and his new friend Tom discover what looks
like houses on Dinosaur Island. Knowing people weren’t around at the same time as dinosaurs the boys decide to check them out with the help of Wanna, a friendly wannaosaurus. What will they find and how will the get through the huge pack of triceratops! A great read full of facts about dinosaurs means that the reader will learn without even realising!

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School The Ark CSK Love was definitely in the air at The Ark on Valentine’s Day. There were hearts a plenty as we celebrated love and thought about how much God loves us. During Story and Song time, Heather revealed a string of hearts that as you can see from this photo went on and on and on…. We were delighted to welcome Tony from Chimes Coffee Shop at the end of February when he brought along freshly baked biscuits for the children to decorate and enjoy. Chimes Coffee Shop at CSK is a popular meeting place for many of our Ark families and this was a
lovely opportunity to bring the two together. The biscuits were scrummy! We continue to enjoy a range of sensory activities which give opportunities for the children to experience different textures, scents and colours. Here are just a few examples. As always, The Ark welcomes all 0 - 5 year olds with their parents, grandparents and carers. There is no need to book, just turn up at 10am on Thursday at CSK Church. The session finishes at 11.15am. We have a dedicated area for babies and their parents/carers within The Ark setup. Come and join us.

Folksworth School Working on the World of Work At Folksworth, we strive to create learning attitudes of curiosity, enrichment and aspiration. We know that we are starting a long process of developing our children for life as adults, and that very much includes the world of work. By embedding careers activities into our curriculum, our children are already getting used to the processes and practices which work includes. For example, when the Learning Council was formed for the year in the Autumn term, the children had to write letters of application to try to persuade their peers to vote for them as the representative. We have also been considering aspirations and working with the children to discover their current answer to that age old question – “what do you want to be when you grow up?”. Do you remember what your answer was?! Researching different roles and learning about the skills it takes to be good at jobs, are all part of making work seem exciting and appealing. During the summer term, we will be inviting people in to come and talk to the children about the jobs they do. If we are to create an awareness of the wide range of opportunities in the workforce today, we need a really good mix of roles to be represented. So please, if you feel you could spare 20 mins to come in and raise childrens’ awareness and aspirations, we would love to hear from you via office@folksworth.cambs.sch.uk

Over a series of workshops, students are taught the craft of playwriting, through scriptwriting, devising, improvising. Eastern Angles work with a selected group of students who work in groups and as individuals to create short scripts. They use creative writing methods that go way beyond just putting pen to paper. The scripts and playwrights are mentored and taken through the process of creating several drafts before there script is taken into rehearsals. The scripts are rehearsed and performed by a professional director and actors at The Undercroft, Serpentine Green in Hampton.' 'Working with Ken Stimpson Community School in my role as Artistic Associate at Eastern Angles has
been fantastic, it is part of my mission here at Eastern Angles to aim to find ways to connect the professional theatre world and the classroom and to completely blur those boundaries. This has been a really important project in achieving that goal. I have been sharing skills with the students in how to create plays that go beyond pen to paper. The final performances consisted of plays about fast speed criminal car chases, a hot dog vendor on a rampage to steal customers from his rivals, and a romance story on a cruise that is slowly sinking.' Read Right! Could your child benefit from a By Kath McLean binocular vision exam? When Sarah’s 10-year-old daughter complained of headaches after school, she did what any sensible parent would do and booked an eye test. After a 15-minute exam she was told that Maisie did not need any glasses and that there was nothing wrong with her. After a few months, Maisie’s symptoms hadn’t disappeared, and her grades were suffering. “She didn’t want to read and was falling behind in class.” Sarah took her back to the optician, who this time gave Maisie some glasses. “She wore them for a couple of weeks but gave up after that as they weren’t helping, in fact she said that they made things worse for seeing the whiteboard. Sarah’s friend advised her to take Maisie to see the optometrist who had helped her son when he had struggled with similar issues. “Immediately I could see that this was a different kind of eye exam.” We didn’t feel rushed. The optometrist was really interested the type of difficulties Maisie was experiencing, when they happened, and how she coped with them. She
performed a whole battery of tests and explained everything as she was going along. She told us that Maisie was having difficulty co-ordinating her eyes so was having to put in more effort to ‘see’, and as she became more tired with the effort of school and study, it became harder and harder for her to keep up the co-ordination, so she just gave up. It all made sense. She’d come home grouchy, rubbing her eyes and with a headache. It was all too much for her.” Optometrists who specialise in what is known as Behavioural Optometry, or who run specialist binocular vision clinics understand that an eye examination should be about more than whether a child can read the bottom line of a chart some distance away. In a classroom eyes need work as a team at all distances. They should be able to point accurately at the same point on a page, then be able to refocus quickly and accurately on the whiteboard and back again, hundreds of times per day. They need to be able scan across lines of text without drifting off to another line. If eyes can’t work as a team, children might try for a while but often develop unhelpful coping mechanisms like
turning their head, screwing their eyes up, and excessive blinking. Eventually they give up and may become disenfranchised from learning. Some groups of children, like those with dyslexia, or those with underlying health conditions are more susceptible to the binocular vision system malfunctioning. Binocular vision examinations measure the ability of the child’s eyes to work together, and then the optometrist can make helpful suggestions, such as glasses, or exercises (sometimes called vision therapy), or a mixture of both. Occasionally coloured overlays might prove useful too. Unfortunately, these types of examination are not available on the NHS, but Sarah says that her money was well spent. “Maisie had some new glasses and a short course of exercises. Within weeks her grades had picked up and she was coming home more cheerful and with no headaches. I would recommend that all parents should take their child for a specialist eye examination if they feel something is wrong. Useful websites: babo.co.uk

rising stars hotly tipped to be ‘the next big thing’
Vivacity’s Comedy Festival at Key Theatre returns for 2019
Serving as a platform for
Vivacity’s comedy festival at the Key Theatre is back for its 7th side splitting year in 2019. The Theatre’s popular festival plays host to big names on the British and International circuit as well serving as a platform for rising stars hotly tipped to be ‘the next big thing’. Take a look at some of the highlights below.
Mark Watson
Thursday 7 March 7.30pm The festival opens in the main house with Mock the Week and BBC Radio 4 regular Mark Watson. After being cluster-bombed with yoghurt on ‘Taskmaster’, Mark returns to what he’s best at: being indoors. As scrawny and impassioned as ever, Mark showcases his usual notoriously high joke-andrant-per-minute rate. ‘He sparkles with originality and verve' - Chortle. Tickets are £20.50 (inc fees).
Gary Delaney
Saturday 9 March 7.30pm One liner merchant Gary Delaney also returns to the theatre with another onslaught of lean, expertly crafted
gaggery. A Mock the Week regular, Gary’s shows are renowned in the business for a near unrivalled volume of high-class gags. ‘More quality jokes in one hour than most comics have in their entire careers...Quite brilliant’ The Scotsman. Tickets are £18.50 (inc fees).
Hal Cruttenden
Sunday 10 March 7.30pm Another big name in the main house, Hal Cruttenden, has literally filled our screens recently with appearances on Have I Got News for You, Back Off: Extra Slice, and Live at the Apollo. His daughters chose the title ‘Chubster’ for his new stand-up show. He’s now on a diet. ‘His finest hour to date’ - The Daily Telegraph. Tickets are £19.50 (inc fees).
Lloyd Griffith
Thursday 7 March 8pm In the Key studio, some award winning names also take to the Key’s
more intimate auditorium. As a comedian, choirboy and host of Sky Sports’ Soccer AM Lloyd Griffith promises jokes, dubious impressions, jokes, a bit of choral singing, jokes, maybe a fact about a Cathedral and some more jokes. ‘Disarmingly good’ - Dominic Maxwell, The Times. Tickets are £15.50 (inc fees).
Sindhu Vee
Friday 8 March 7.30pm Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer Nominee 2018 and Live at the Apollo star, Sindhu Vee who brings her critically acclaimed and Edinburgh Fringe sell-out show, Sandhog. “Acerbic perspective and unapologetic delivery of less politically correct home truths” - The List. Tickets are £15.50, £13.50 concessions.
Ken Cheng
Saturday 9 March 8pm Dave Joke of the Fringe Winner, Cambridge mathematics dropout and professional poker player Ken Cheng embarks on his UK-wide tour ‘Best Dad Ever’ following a sold-out, award nominated run at the Edinburgh Festival. Tickets are £13.50, £11.50 concessions.
Ahir Shah
Sunday 10 March, 8pm Plus, don’t miss Ahir Shah who returns to the Key with a brand new stand-up show about life and what comes after, death and what comes before, and Bohemian Rhapsody. 'Smart, impressive and brilliantly funny tour-de-comedy' Chortle. Tickets are £13.50.
The Festival runs from Thu 7 - Sun 10 March and all shows are recommended for ages 16+. To book for any of the shows above, head to vivacity.org/comedyfest

Do you need an
Activity Tracker?
Activity trackers have become very popular in recent years. Fitbits are the device that everyone has heard of but there are many others. If you're thinking of buying one, ask yourself these questions: Do you exercise regularly? Lots of people buy a Fitbit or its equivalent because they think it will help them to exercise consistently. But these devices are not magic bullets. If you make any and every excuse NOT to exercise then a Fitbit won’t change that, you will simply make excuses to avoid exercise while wearing a gadget! Would you wear it, and use it? For a fitness tracker to give you actionable data you need to wear it almost all of the time, even while asleep. Some people can't wear watches or jewellery while they are at work, others hate the feeling of anything on their wrist, and others have sensitive skin which is irritated by straps. If you don’t wear it then it can't do its job, so it’s not worth buying one. Will you use the app?

You'll need to download the app to your phone and use it if you want to make use of the data your activity tracker collects. Interacting with your device and the app is key to success, so if you can't commit, don't buy. Are you a data nerd? Some of us love to monitor our sleep, our heart rates, the number of steps we do each day. We find ourselves endlessly fascinating. The basics of losing weight and becoming healthier are simple, but the specifics for our own body can vary wildly. If you don’t care about specifics and are happy with just eating a bit
By Ian Collins less and exercising a bit more, an activity tracker might be a waste of money for you. If you have a medical condition or are in training for an event, or just enjoy looking at data, then having organized and detailed information at your fingertips is a great resource. Would my phone do the job instead? There are hundreds of fitness, pedometer and cycling apps on both Android and iOS. If you're unsure about whether an activity tracker is the right purchase for you try using one or two of these apps for a month. You might find they give you all the data you need. Also, if you find you can't be bothered to use the apps, then you are very unlikely to benefit from buying an activity tracker. Are you competitive? Some activity trackers (particularly Fitbits) are social. You can add friends, compare step counts and earn milestone badges. You can also create groups and engage in competitions and challenges. While these are good features, they aren’t for everyone. You might not need such a high-spec activity tracker if you don't want to engage in the social side of things. Activity trackers are useful devices and many people enjoy them and benefit from using them, but they won't turn a reluctant exerciser into a highly motivated one, and if you aren't actually interested in all the data, they might not justify their price tag.

In a Heartbeat
By Louise Addison
What are ectopic beats?
CSK Church, Silver Hill Tuesdays: 5.30pm & 7.30pm Contact Nat: 07540 109 787 CSK Church, Silver Hill Fridays: 9.30am & 11.30am Contact Scott: 07734 364 138 Hampton Vale Community Centre, Westlake Avenue Thursdays:

8.30am, 10.30am & 12.30pm Contact Scott: 07734 364 138
Ectopic heartbeats are extra heartbeats that occur just before a regular beat. Ectopic beats are normal ad usually they are not a cause for concern. About 70% of medically normal adults without any symptoms at all have ectopic beats if monitored over 24 hours. They are far less common in children and are more likely to be a result of an underlying heart abnormality in those cases. There are two types of ectopic beat: PAC - Premature atrial contractions, which begin in the upper chambers of the heart. PVC - Premature ventricular contractions, which begin in the lower chambers of the heart. An ectopic beat might be felt as an extra awareness of the heart beating; a feeling of faintness; a sensation of the heart stopping for a second, or a fluttering sensation in the chest. The fact that some people become aware of their ectopic beats doesn’t automatically mean there is a problem. Most commonly people who become aware of their ectopic beats are also susceptible to anxiety. What tends to happen is that during an episode of anxiety their system is flooded with adrenalin and their heart begins to race. They become aware of their heart racing, and then suddenly they experience a (perfectly normal) ectopic beat, only it feels anything but normal to them because their heart is already racing.
They can then become hyperaware of any perceived differences in rhythm, and this can feed their anxiety. Most GPs can diagnose ectopic heartbeats from symptoms and by listening with a stethoscope. Sometimes they will arrange a precautionary electrocardiogram (ECG). If someone is aware of their ectopic beat only when they are sitting quietly, this is less of a concern than if the ectopics become noticeable after exercise, such as running upstairs. Ectopics are also of more concern if there is a history of a previous heart attack, or a family of heart disease. A GP will want to rule out complications such as ventricular tachycardia and arrhythmia. If further investigation is required the GP might order an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound), or a coronary angiography, an MRI, a CT scan, or exercise testing. In most cases ectopic heartbeats do not require treatment; however, there are certain well-known triggers. It can be helpful to review all medications and their possible interactions, stop smoking, reduce alcohol and caffeine intake, and reduce stress and anxiety as much as possible. Remember, most ectopic heartbeats are not a cause for concern, but if they are persistent, or you are worried, then consult your GP.

Frequently asked questions Can I overdose on CBD? No. It has no known toxicity levels and is incapable to overdose. Is it addictive? No. It is no more addictive than any other therapeutic products and vitamins. Will it make me high? No. It’s non-psychoactive. CBD is made from industrial hemp, a strain that is different to the plant that is used in cannabis. How do I know its safe? Make sure you buy from a reputable retailer, ask for lab reports, check and see if they are members of the CTA and find out where the product is originally from. So much comes in from China where they have no certifications and products are tested on animals. All Hapi Hemp products are certified and we can provide lab reports, we are also members of the CTA. Is CBD the same as marijuana? No. It is a different strain of plant to the cannabis plant that is used in marijuana. Are there any side effects? No. Most people do not experience any side effects from Hapi Hemp products. We always recommend people start slowly in the first few days.
Hapi Hemp will be offering a range of CBD oils, teas, chocolate and skincare. For more info join our Hapi Hemp group on Facebook and follow us on Instagram. Our website will be launching soon! 32 32

What is
?
Trichology
Chictocheek
Trichology is the science that sits behind the hair and scalp. Every qualified hairdresser should have a good basic understanding of hair but a Trichologist is a specialist who has studied the hair and scalp, their structures, diseases and functions. The “trich” part of the word Trichology comes from the Greek word “trikhos”, which literally means hair. Hair science practitioners have been called Trichologists since 1902, which was also the landmark year for the founding of the College for Diseases of the Hair in the UK. It would later be known as The Institute of Trichologists, which it is still called today. One of the most common reasons for visiting a trained Trichologist is hair loss; the impact of hair loss to a person’s mental and emotional health can be devastating. A Trichologist will look at things such as your age, metabolism, general health and
diet to understand the reasons behind your hair loss and provide you with the support, advice and/or treatment you need. The Trichocentre, located on London Road in Peterborough, was opened by Benedetto Cusumano in 2015, and is the first one of its kind in Peterborough. After 13 years of working as a hairdresser in the city, Ben wanted to do more to help people suffering from hair loss and scalp conditions. After qualifying at the prestigious Institute of Trichologists in London, Ben was also awarded the John Firmage Certificate of Distinction, in recognition for this work in this field.

How to wake-up
Refreshed By Louise Addison
Do you spring out of bed each morning with the bright eyes and energy of a five-year-old on Christmas morning? No, me neither. But there are a few tips which might help: Get enough sleep – It’s so obvious it actually does need stating: most of us do not get anywhere near enough sleep. Sleep needs vary from person to person, but most of us need at least eight hours uninterrupted shut-eye. I haven’t slept like that since my children were born, and the oldest is now eight! Make your room dark and quiet – Too much extraneous light and noise is not conducive to good sleep. Invest in thick curtains or a sleep mask if light is an issue and soft earplugs if your neighbour has noisy dogs or a twitchy car alarm. Renew your mattress – Mattresses do not last forever. They become saggy and less supportive with age, which makes us fidget and interferes with the quality of our sleep. A good mattress should support your spine and allow your body to relax totally. Have a bath – Yes really. A soak before bed will relax your muscles and calm your mind. Lavender bath products are especially good at inducing sleep. Clear your head – It’s difficult to sleep if your head is still whirring from the events of the day. Concentrate on your breathing and allow thoughts to float away. Anything you are dealing with will still be there tomorrow and you’ll cope better if you’ve had a good night’s sleep.

Scheme against scammers seeks to stamp out postal fraud
A new crackdown on scammers has been launched across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough with the aim of making the county scam-free –and Safe Local Trades is delighted to be supporting it! The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP) includes Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Police and Crime Commissioner Jason Ablewhite, Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council. CAPASP is committed to working towards stamping out scams; from postal to online fraud, to telephone scams and doorstep rogue traders. Over the next few months, we will be looking in more detail at these scams and the warning signs which could prevent you from parting with your hard earned cash. So, postal scams … what are they are how can we spot the signals? An official looking letter drops through the door – you open it and to your delight and amazement you have won a substantial amount of cash in a prize draw, or have been left a large sum in a Will. The letter instructs you to share your personal and bank details so that the money can be paid directly into your account. What do you do? That glossy catalogue landing on the doormat is selling ‘miracle’ diet supplements, and that oh so accurate letter from the experienced clairvoyant has got your first personal reading spot on, but you need to pay for a follow up. What do you do? All these seem too good to be true – free money, a better future and a new, improved you! That’s because they are; in fact these are some of the clever postal scams currently causing misery to people locally and further afield.
The correspondence will look ‘official’ – cleverly designed to fool the recipient; often with lots of attention to detail. If you aren’t expecting to receive postal notification of the nature, some telltale signs are: Requests are made for money first before getting prize Use of the customer’s first name to make the letter look personal The letter is written to put people under pressure to reply PO Boxes are used instead of full postal address Too good to be true offers They are created to look dazzling A director’s name, picture and signature is used to make it look official Stamps are used to make it look official Fake testimonials or money back guarantees are often used to make offer seem genuine The letter often asks the recipient to keep their winnings a secret
