Welcome... These uncertain times have encouraged in so many of us the need to think outside the self, and instead to seek ways to make a positive impact that enables others to feel better. That community spirit has never felt as imperative, nor has it been as reassuringly evident, as it has in recent months. Hampton residents have risen to so many challenges and exceeded them. This issue continues to appreciate those amongst us who put their own everyday concerns aside and volunteer to assist others, to make our spaces more beautiful or to focus on specific needs of those who are struggling, yet overall, in every way possible, to just help to make our world a better place. That said, we are being bombarded with advice and more on what we should and shouldn’t be doing. The most important thing is to remember to look after yourself. Don’t expect to be 100% productive. You’ve never been 100% productive when you weren’t working from home - you won’t be now. The million tips for juggling home-schooling and work will help, but don't be too strict on yourself on those days where you realise why you didn't choose teaching as a career. There’s so much going on. It’s okay to not have a handle on everything. Take a deep breath and ensure that you give yourself a break. To quote the words from Desiderata: 'with all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.'

Due to the pandemic and third lockdown it has seemed like a very long winter this year. March has always been one of my favourite months. The days really start to feel like they’re getting longer as the clocks go forward towards the end of the month. Winter gets left behind. We see signs of new life in spring flowers pushing through the hard ground and buds and leaves appear on trees. All things to be thankful for. Psalm 118 in the Bible begins with these words: Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. One of my favourite worship songs is called 10,000 Reasons and starts like this: The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning, It’s time to sing your song again, Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, Let me be singing when the evening comes. It is believed that both finding things to be thankful for and music can help lift our spirits. Each week on our YouTube channel we worship God in song and give thanks that he is always with us, whether we’re in the dark days of winter or living with the hope of new life that the season of spring brings us. If you want to find out more about the God whose love for you does indeed endure forever, who gives us new life and fresh hope whatever circumstances are surrounding us, please don’t hesitate to give me a call on 01733 240196 or do check out our YouTube channel ‘CSK Hampton Church’. Arun has reported fly-tipping and any damage he sees to O&H. He organised fortnightly litter picking sessions and then, when covid struck, he made sure that all safety measures were put in place. During lockdown Arun has continued to do this on his own, picking up litter on his daily walks. He has also now encouraged other residents to do this. It has made a positive impact on our commumity, bringing people together, keeping Hampton clean and litter free, as well as helping everyone to stay active.

Take Pride in your Space Jai Smith, Hampton Water Spring is in the air, buds are starting to grow Rubbish in the hedgerows, litter wherever you go The sun is shining on this lovely place Plastic wrappers glistening, what a disgrace A pleasant meander around the lake One plastic bin bag and litter picker to take Flowers budding and trees growing, a wonderful sight Adorned with new fruit, hanging bags of dog shite The landscape so pretty but ruined by so few There’s bins available, if only they knew! COVID-19 National Vaccination Programme This is the biggest vaccination programme the NHS has ever undertaken. The NHS is well-used to delivering millions of vaccines a year, and is moving quickly to roll out this vaccine to those who need it, but it’s important that we remember this will be a marathon, not a sprint. The large increase in cases hospitals are seeing and the emergence of a new variant of the virus shows that we cannot let our guard down now. NHS staff are doing an incredible job to deliver what it is the largest vaccination programme in our history, at the same time as continuing to be there for everyone who needs care.

Marie Curie Daffodil Appeal 1 – 31 March Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal has been raising awareness and funds since 1986. Every March, millions of people across the UK show their support for our work, simply by giving a donation to wear a daffodil pin. Without this generosity, thousands of families across the UK wouldn’t be able to make the most of the precious time they have left together. www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil for more information

The public have an important part to play to help them do this:  Please don’t contact the NHS to seek a vaccine, we will contact you;  When we do contact you, please attend your booked appointments;  And please continue to follow all the guidance to control the virus and save lives. The new medical advice is the second dose of the vaccine remains effective when given up to 12 weeks after the first dose, and should be given towards the end of this 12 week period. Two doses of the vaccine are still needed to get the best protection from the virus, but significant protection is still provided 22 days after the first dose. We will contact you to arrange your first and or second vaccination if eligible. Please continue to wear face coverings where required and adhere to social distancing guidelines even after you have received your vaccine. This is very important. www.yaxleygp.nhs.uk/

National No Smoking Day 10 March No Smoking Day is an annual health awareness day in the United Kingdom which is intended to help smokers who want to quit smoking. The first No Smoking Day was on Ash Wednesday in 1984, and it now takes place on the second Wednesday in March. www.nhs.uk/live-well/quit-smoking/10-self-help-tips-to-stop-smoking/

Monthly Closure Dates The Practice will be closed on Wednesday 17 March between 12.30 and 4.00pm for staff training. Emergency Telephone 01733 240478.

Hampton's Creative Spaces Peterborough Presents have approached the Parish Council with suggestions to the location of a public art feature that would provide people with temporary shelter but allow them to feel close to nature, (a mature tree will be planted in the middle) Artist Caroline Wendling led den building workshops for children and for adults in Hampton in which participants could explore working with different materials and tools to create spaces to meet and talk. Using some of the ideas and her consultations findings Caroline designed a series of shelters that were shared once more in workshops where participants voted on design ideas and explored different ideas. The community were involved throughout in the design of this public art installation. The design of this is a semi-open structure composed of two different ‘rooms’, each featuring a simple seat and circular openings between to allow for playful conversations. A fully mature tree will grow through the structure in one ‘room’, the smaller room, with

a circular opening in the 'larger' room allowing people to look up and see the sky, reminiscent of the piece by James Turrell at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The structure will work as a shelter but also as a place where one is never far from nature and in which one can observe nature. The artists belief that a child is never close enough from a tree has urged her to integrate a growing tree in the smaller room, bringing nature close to human but also creating shelter. The structure will be constructed from 8mm sheet steel, painted blue on the exterior and pink interior. Echo Fabrication, a Cambridge based company will be commissioned to make, transport, and install the structure with Structural Engineers Cambridge providing the base. The base will be created following full assessment of the ground of the final location.

The Parish Council suggested either Springs Avenue or the outdoor gym area on Eagle Way for this feature and we would like to hear residents’ opinions and any other suggestions for possible locations for this art installation. Email parishoffice@hamptonpc.co.uk with your suggestions For more information regarding Peterborough presents visit www.peterboroughpresents.org/

A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the Hampton Helpers initiative for February half term. Over £360 was spent towards providing fresh meat, eggs, fruit and vegetables. In addition to the families that we supported during half term, we also sent out food parcels to eight families in the run-up, who were in need of urgent support. Due to the tremendous amount of help we received from the residents of Hampton, we have a good quantity of surplus cupboard essentials, which we will use for Easter. A particular shout-out must go to the team at Eagleway Food Store, who sourced and packaged all our fresh goods, ready for our team of volunteers to collect on the day of delivery to our families. And not forgetting our small army of drivers, who went out as far as Paston, Dosthorpe and Cardea to deliver to those in need, thank you. We will be taking a small break and then doing it all again at Easter! For anyone who would like to support us or make the donation of an Easter Egg for the kids, please join our ever-growing community. You can find us on Facebook at Hampton Helpers.

As well as the dedication of all key workers during this crisis he has been taken aback by the support, kindness and generosity that has been evident but often gone unseen across the Hampton community.

Hampton swans playing it safe! I had to go to the post box and as I looked up I saw these 2 swans who walked all the way along the path to cross the road at the pelican crossing to get to the other side to go all the way back up this side of the path to get to the pond. They could have crossed anywhere but they actually used the pelican crossing how clever are they? They must be watching all the humans dropping kids at school and notice that cars have to stop when they cross there... gotta love a swan ! I really needed to see that and it cheered me up no end.

While home-working has been quietly on the rise for several years, the pandemic-driven shift to home-learning for students of all ages has been sudden and dramatic.

Home learning and the future of digital education By Rebecca Stephens, City Manager for Peterborough at CityFibre Overnight, desks and classrooms became tablets and kitchen tables, creating new barriers and challenges nobody could have ever imagined or planned for. This has been incredibly tough for everyone – students, parents and teachers alike – with the stresses on all sides being shared widely in the news and on social media. A key reason for this is because the tools being used for home-schooling today weren’t ever meant to be used by the entire school roll all at the same time – nor as a replacement for inperson learning. As a result, teachers are spending their valuable time juggling IT troubleshooting and battling against buffering, revealing a gaping divide between the haves and have nots when it comes to quality connectivity and ownership of school work-friendly devices. Learning at home using new and engaging digital tools should be an opportunity everyone can enjoy. Indeed, teacher groups have suggested that a blended approach combining at-home and classroom-based learning could be here to stay. If we’ve learned anything over the past year, it’s that we need to level up access if all our learners are to benefit from the next-generation of educational tools. This is why CityFibre is building a city-wide full fibre network that will bring almost every property in Peterborough within reach of the fastest, most reliable and highest capacity connectivity available to ensure a seamless online learning experience.

that they haven’t yet had the opportunity to try out more of the digital tools that are now emerging, and find one that suits them. We all learn differently, and in the classroom it is much easier for the teacher to adapt to different students’ needs. Of course, the success of innovations like these depend wholly on the infrastructure that supports them.

Immersive Learning The best and easiest way to achieve this is by creating immersive learning experiences. With technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), this is all a real possibility – at all levels of education. Importantly, AR and VR aren’t bound by the laws of physics, making it possible for learners to experience unfamiliar or even dangerous environments from a safe distance. In addition, because most VR experiences can be enjoyed independently, students can go at their own pace, skipping parts that they’re already proficient at while spending more time on areas where they want to improve.

A strong connection

Future of education

Designed specifically for the digital age, full fibre networks use 100% full fibre technology to carry data at light speed all the way from the home to the point of connection which gives users consistently faster speeds - for upload and download, near limitless bandwidth (i.e. everyone in your house can work, study, stream or game simultaneously), and connectivity you can depend on.

Besides connectivity, a second reason why many students have had a mixed experience of home-based learning is

With full fibre, you’ll never need to worry about you or your child missing a lesson at home ever again!

secondnature Not the kind of question you ask a stranger in the street, but we have just come through a really wet winter with high levels of flooding across the city and much of the land suffering from waterlogging. Those who have ventured out in this wet weather may well have noticed the phenomena of literally hundreds of earthworms motionless on paths adjacent to water logged grassland.

How are your worms? The more observant amongst us may also have noticed the ease with which birds have bn able to pluck earthworms from their burrows. Great news for birds who have been able to keep well fed but bad news for earthworms.

So why has this been happening? Well as the soil becomes saturated all the little air pockets within disappear and worms are forced to the surface to be able to breathe. Also because the soil is muddy and slippery their chaetae (worm feet if you like) can get no grip in their burrows when a bird

starts to pull on them and the come out like a champagne cork rather than a standard wine cork.

Why does any of this matter? Well earthworms are incredibly important for maintaining the structure and health of our soils taking nutrients down to the roots aerating the soil and crating the conditions that mitigate against flooding. So the potential mass loss of earthworms to flooding and waterlogging can prove a double whammy as it will increase the likelihood of future waterlogging

Lakota (Lover of Nature)

Now this really was a surprise. Perched on the railing of the Tinus Avenue/Higney Road canal was a kingfisher. The first I have seen in Hampton. It was quite a small bird really but so brightly coloured with its blue and orange plumage. Kingfishers are generally declining in numbers which makes it even more of a delight to see one, especially in Hampton. Apparently only a quarter of young kingfishers survive their first year and most adults only live for just over a year – but this just about maintains the overall population. They are, though, on the endangered bird species amber list, which means that they need to be protected. In folklore the kingfisher was considered to be a symbol of peace and promised prosperity and love.

As its name implies the kingfisher’s diet is mainly fish: usually minnows and sticklebacks. But they do also eat freshwater insects, shrimps and tadpoles. To seek out food the kingfisher will find somewhere to perch and scan the water for prey. Once it has found a fish it will bob its head up and down to work out its position in the water. Once it has done so it will dive towards the surface of the water with its wings open, and its eyes protected by transparent

eyelids. If it makes a successful catch it will take the fish back to its perch where it usually stuns it before swallowing it headfirst. Kingfishers nest in burrows, usually in soft riverbanks; perhaps the Hampton clay suits them. Apparently these tunnels take around two weeks to complete because they are often up to a metre in length. They create these long tunnels around March time when they lay their eggs in a

nesting chamber at the end of the tunnel. Once the chicks have hatched the parents are kept busy providing as many as eighteen fish a day for each chick. In folklore the kingfisher was considered to be a symbol of peace and promised prosperity and love. It was said to have flown from Noah’s Ark and caught the orange of the setting sun on its breast and the blue of the sky on its back.

Extract from John Clare’s poem ‘The Fens’ written in 1824 by our famous Peterborough (Helpston) poet In coat of orange, green and blue Now on a willow branch I view, Grey waving to the sunny gleam, Kingfishers watch the ripple stream For little fish that nimble bye And in the gravel shallows lie.

Sojourns Sunshine WOW! March is here already and spring is on its way... my daffodils and tulips are looking amazing already and dare we dream we may get away to a beach this summer? It doesn’t matter if it’s UK or Europe, or maybe you have bigger plans for further afield? We must dream and we must stay positive ... we CAN get away this summer. There are some beautiful lodges and little cottages around for hire so why not book something on the Norfolk coast or the Norfolk Broads? Maybe you are hoping to get away to Europe somewhere and there is already talk of Greece letting us Brits in as long as we have had the vaccine. There really is hope that we can still get away this year. Remember, if you book with a good tour operator with ABTA cover and your holiday cannot go ahead due to The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advising against all travel you will be offered a full refund, or amend to next year. If you do not have ABTA cover then you are likely to end up with a credit note to redeem at a later date.

Many people are aiming to get away in October half-term as this seems far enough away to be feasible and again, the prices are fab! If you are thinking of heading to the Canary Islands where the weather should still be hot, or Turkey, you can pick up a bargain right now. Please head to my page @Sarahhounsellathaystravel on Facebook. If you would like any holiday ideas i have plenty on my page or get in touch with me and I can put some ideas together for you.

BOX OF DELIGHTS from the heart of Italy Valentina moved to Peterborough from Tuscany five years ago. Apart from the warm weather, she missed the traditional artisan food and also realised how much Italian food is loved here in the UK Valentina explains, "With my tourism and catering experience gained whilst working in Italy, I decided to use my contacts to bring a taste of Italy to your home, using only the highest quality ingredients and well-known brands." "From my friend's award-winning olive oil from her own plantation in Umbria, to the specially made biscuits and jams from Piemonte. With the help of my Italian importer, who helps me with my specific requirements, we have salamis and cheeses from Campania, Calabria and Tuscany."

pizza with her family, so she wanted to bring that here too. "My pizza in a box is an easy and fun way to make an authentic pizza at home" she adds, "we provide you with only the highest quality ingredients and toppings (sorry, pineapple allowed!)." "If you really want to go to chocolate heaven, a favourite in Italy is a Nutella pizza and once you've tried it you will be hooked!"

Each platter from MY ITALIAN BOX will give you a truly mouth-watering experience.

To add to the exquisite flavours MY ITALIAN BOX cuts and prepares all of the platters to order, and a freshly cut salami or a provolone piccante is totally different from anything that has been repacked.

Another great experience Valentina enjoyed in Italy was making her own

So for a truly authentic experience please give MY ITALIAN BOX a try.

sweet as Cambridgeshire Sugarcraft Supplies Ltd, was founded in 2013 by its owners Nicola and David Mash with the aim of building a business based on quality cake making products and exciting training. Since that day, the business has grown from strength to strength with the purchase of a second unit to allow expansion and additional passionate and talented staff. The company has developed its offering to suit the needs of both the local and national customers alike, complemented by their ability to be able to trade with both home cooks as well as large bakeries. In 2015, Cambridgeshire Sugarcraft Supplies became a PME training facility, delivering high level courses, right up to PME National Diploma levels for advanced cake makers. The expansion of the building allowed for two new bespoke training rooms, able to cater for courses of up to 12 adults plus a smaller more intimate classroom for up to 6 people.

Over the past months, renovations and a redesign of the premises, has the shop looking fantastic! It is a welcoming, vibrant and exciting place to visit for all ages of cake maker During the lockdown, the focus has been on providing a safe and user friendly web based shopping experience, complimented by a FREE local delivery service from the new vans and bike. As a local company, dealing with such a loyal and friendly client base, online sales and deliveries have formed the vast majority of the business but still allowing a level of personal interaction on the door step.

HAMPTON VALE PRIMARY

Mrs Thomas (Head of School)

We are a small village primary school, just outside of Yaxley. We pride ourselves on working in partnership with families and the local community. I thought this month I’d take the time to share with you our fantastic school family. Our staff continue to work tirelessly to provide a quality education for both the children in school and the pupils at home. As well as daily live sessions for Maths and English , we are still teaching Art, History, Geography, Religious Education and Personal Social and Health Education remotely. We are so grateful to our families who are working alongside us to ‘teach’ their children. Last month the families treated the whole staff to an afternoon tea and two hampers of chocolate treats. The staff were thrilled!

We continue to be small but mighty!

Over the past month we have:  Held our PTA meeting remotely and welcomed lots of new members  Spent some of the PTA’s donated ‘Covid Fund’ on technology to support remote learning and picture books to support mental health.  Handed out devices and resources to support home learning  Ran an online workshop for families on developing resilience in young people  Set up an online forum for parents to chat with one another This month we are all learning to skip! We have purchased a skipping rope for each child and asked our friends at Youth Dreams Project to prepare 10 videos to support the children learning to skip. Our Vicar the Rev. Dyball has also been supporting us by creating some imaginative Collective Worship sessions in the world of Minecraft. The children at home are enjoying these.

We do have spaces in a few of our year groups. Please contact the school office for details. School office : 01487 830342 www.holme.cambs.sch.uk

Children's Mental Health Week 2021 took place from 1-7 February with the overall theme of Express Yourself. More so now than ever children’s mental health is at the forefront of all our minds and at Hampton Vale Primary Academy we wanted to show our support for such a great cause and help raise awareness of children’s mental health with our children and school community. The Express Yourself theme was incorporated into lessons across the curriculum. In PHSE children designed and created posters showing their creative side, in literacy children followed instructions to make paper cranes and our on-site catering contractors, Accent Catering, shared a selection of simple children’s recipes which gave the children another outlet for creativity and a way of possibly changing their daily routine. To get the endorphins flowing, the school also worked in partnership with Tanzii TV, as regular exercise is an important factor in maintaining a good level of physical and positive mental health. Every day, the Tanzii brothers shared an Olympic themed workout for the children to enjoy and the children loved taking part. We rounded off the week by asking children to ‘Dress to Express.’ The children were invited to wear different colours to express their feelings,

Students were encouraged to take a ‘screen free’ day on Friday 5 February as part of our Tutor Day, to give them a chance to learn in a slightly different way. As so much of their time has been spent working behind computer screens in recent weeks, this was an opportunity to remind ourselves that learning is much more than what can be done online.

thoughts and emotions. We saw an array of colours, not just from the children who are currently in school, but also from the children learning remotely at home over their daily Zoom meetings.

All students in Years 7-11 had the opportunity to select approximately five (or more if they wished) activities and had control over the content of their day. Students were encouraged to be actively engaging in activities for around five hours during the day, but the content of the day was up to them.

Thank you to our school community who helped us raise a massive £588.25 for such a worthwhile cause.

Some of these activities included:  Writing a poem or short story about their experiences of lockdown  Submit a book review to share their recommendations with others  Submit a 100 short story saga  Listen to one of the audio books narrated by our Literacy Co-ordinator  Produce a piece of artwork based on their favourite story  Have a go at science experiments, including egg drop parachute, hovercrafts, lava lamps, light up magic wand and play dough

We must remember the importance of maintaining good mental health and before half term we will also have a Screen Free Friday, to give children the opportunity to get away from screens and devices and enjoy a range of creative activities that will stimulate the mind and encourage children to spend quality time with loved ones.

 Create their own dance routine to their favourite song  Design and test their own HIT workout  Go for a run, bike ride or walk  Create a meal for their family or bake a cake

Each day we also share a Daily Fun Challenge with the children, this could be getting the children tongue tied with tongue twisters, or asking them to show us their superpowers. All these challenges are an important way of helping the children to realise that although we are apart, we are all still together.

 Write a letter to their grandparents Lola in Year 9 made a funfetti cake on her tutor day.

ANXIETY CBD has recently captured spotlight as an alternative or complementary treatment for anxiety. Research has shown that CBD impacts the endocannabinoid system which can influence serotonin levels.

FITNESS There is now clear evidence that CBD can provide health benefits and aids in improving fitness and recovery. So, many well known faces actively promote their use of CBD for this reason.

INFLAMMATION There is research to suggest that CBD reduces inflammation by affecting activity in the body’s endocannabinoid receptors.

SLEEP Over the last few years, CBD has emerged as a increasingly popular natural treatment for insomnia. Studies are in early stages but already there are promising signs that CBD is an effective treatment for improving & enhancing sleep.

At a race back in 2018, when looking around at the other runners in their vests, Jon and James noticed that all the club names included the word 'Harriers.' There was Nene Valley Harriers, Helpston Harriers, Bourne Town Harriers, Bedford Harriers and more, so James mentioned to Jon that somewhere the size of Hampton should also have its own running club, and they both said out loud: ‘Hampton Harriers’. From that day on, when they could meet up for a beer, they discussed how to achieve this. They knew that they needed a Facebook Page to start off with, so that they could see what levels of interest and activity we would get and if there was an opportunity for this to happen. However, unbeknown to them, when they researched Hampton Harriers on Facebook, the name was already taken by Paul Atherfold who had similar ideas, but whose time was taken up elsewhere. Paul kindly gave them the rights to the Facebook Page, along with advice, and they have been posting ever since. hamptonharriers.co.uk

6 BENEFITS OF RUNNING

Slim from Home in Hampton in the Lockdown

The group was formed in 2020 by friends, James Trigg and Jon Murphy, both of whom are local Hampton residents and keen runners Hampton Harriers has become a vibrant, growing group with over 100 Facebook members posting their daily runs and enjoying the benefits of running alongside the support from the group, whether you are an experienced runner or a beginner. With a population of over 5,000 people and still expanding, Hampton has some great running routes to try, with beautiful views and lakes. At present, they do not have club nights, as Hampton Harriers was set up during lockdown, so they are still unable to meet or plan set dates just yet, but they hope to soon. Their aim is to form the club officially with England Athletics and hold official races and events in the future. They hope that joining the group not only improves your health and fitness but also introduces you to new friends and socialising activities. So don’t forget to post your run on our Facebook page for the group to see. Facebook-square/groups/520950574756471/

Running Is good for your heart Running even five to 10 minutes a day, at slow speeds is associated with a drastically reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Runner's high Is real Running has mood-boosting effects. When you run, your brain pumps out two powerful feel-good chemicals, endorphins and endocannabinoids. Running strengthens your joints Research has found that runners were half as likely to suffer from knee osteoarthritis compared with walkers. Low-impact exercises don't have the same bone-building benefits of running. Running burns up those calories Running requires a lot of fuel (aka calories). In fact, the average 150-pound person will burn about 12.2 calories per minute running a 10-minute mile. Head outside where wind and hills increase your effort and you can expect to burn even more. You can always fit in a run Traveling for work? Don't belong to a gym? Have only 10 minutes to work out? An extra advantage for busy people who can't seem to sustain regular workouts or classes, whatever your workout constraints, most people can still run! Running Helps You Build a Community The running community is a strong one and the community benefits of running are often immeasurable. Whether you join a running club or a charity's running team, or just take a look around during your first 10K, you'll be amazed at all the support and good vibes you get.

Fewer natural oils, sun damage, and decreased cell renewal can all lead to dry, rougher skin as we get older. Loss of hormones can also lead to drier skin. Beauty experts talk all the time about anti-aging skin care routines for the face and neck, but don't foget to give hands the care they deserve, and it makes sense when you consider that hands are one of the first places on your body to reveal your age. Hot water, detergents, and hard work can take a toll on your hands, so whether you’re hoping to avoid aging hands early on or are simply looking for ways to turn back the hands of time, discover the amazing benefits of hapihemp hand and nail cream, and intensive product, boasting 200mg of CBD along with a natural blend of chamomile, lemon and lavender, all of which are extremely soothing. to restore moisture to your hands and fortify the nails, leaving your hands and nails nourished and in peak condition. It can also help with relieving uncomfortable hands and ‘texting fingers.’ hapihemp Hemp Seed Hand Sanitiser not only serves as a fast-acting germ killer it also hydrates and cares for your skin. pocket-sized spray, so it is perfect to take anywhere (no sink needed!) and leaves no sticky residue. CBD oil has a perfect balance of nutrients and substances that will nourish and moisturize your skin. Another advantage of using CBD oil is that it doesn’t affect the functioning of your sebaceous glands. The oil instead interacts with your skin glands regulating the production of oil. As a result, it doesn’t just help your skin to prevent the overproduction of oil; it also helps dry skin to increase oil production. People spend a lot of money on cosmetic products that promise to keep their skin in perfect condition. But such unnatural products can do more harm than good. Using natural remedies is the best way to go. While there are plenty of options on the market, none seems to match CBD oil and many state that the benefits to enjoy are overwhelming. If you have not already discovered the amazing benefits of CBD products, perhaps it is time to spring clean your beauty regime and give it a try.

MYTHS, MIRAGES

by Dimension 6000

& MIRACLES

Current research suggests that activities involved in maintaining beauty positively influence our physical and emotional wellbeing. Amy Binns is a beauty therapist with a mission to demonstrate the inextricabe union between not only looking great, but feeling amazing, too. As proud and devoted 35-year-old mother to three sons for the past eight years, Amy decided to work for herself, as this enabled her to fit round her children's needs and routines. A busy life caring for children and working hard left her with a tendency to place looking and feeling good low on her own priorities and she realised she would not be the only one who felt like that, so she wanted to embark on a project that would encourage people to feel good about themselves. Having undertook various beauty accredited training courses and preparation, she sold off her previous business and introduced her new company, LK Brows & Beauty She can empathise with those who think that there is always something else we can think of to spend the money on, other people to treat rather than ourselves. But at what real cost? These days, the beauty industry can provide the antidote to a myriad of issues through a mantra that is becoming less superficial and more interwoven with a more holistic fabric that includes kindness, compassion and therapy. “I had almost forgotten how to listen to my own needs,” Amy explained. “So, whilst it was undoubtedly a daunting prospect starting a business all over again, I also recognised that choosing to invest in the beauty industry I would be able to share and offer a much-needed boost to others' self-worth, those whose situations may be similar to my own." Taking time out to care for ourselves can remind us and others that all of our needs are important. It’s great for helping lower stress and anxiety, and

encourages positive feedback. In the throes of any negative external climate, everything can fall apart. But if we start with a beauty routine, it can help regain a feeling of control which can readily extend to other areas of life. Beauty, grooming and mental health have long intersected. As a psychological signifier of our mental wellbeing, beauty is crucial. There is a quote that states: ‘Your outer beauty will capture the eyes,

that even if we do have the money to have these kinds of treatments, we don’t always feel that it is deserved.” Finding a way to reach out to as many people as possible and show people the difference a beauty treatment can make, especially during the recent lockdown situation, would require a little more ingenuity. So, Amy set up a monthly competition on Facebook, with the intention that every winner

“I had almost forgotten how to listen to my own needs,” Amy explained. “So, whilst it was undoubtedly a daunting prospect starting a business all over again, I also recognised that choosing to invest in the beauty industry I would be able to share and offer a muchneeded boost to others' self-worth, those whose situations may be similar to my own." your inner beauty will capture the heart.’ Beauty, these days, is recognised more for encouraging the outer and inner self to work together in harmony. It is no longer a trick of the light that we yearn to glow in the shadows, perhaps especially in the uncertainty of unprecedented times, it is that outer beacon which becomes a tangible and essential reminder that we are worth it. “I wanted to find an effective way to convey this message of empowerment, to restore lost confidence in as many people as possible" and addressing the financial aspect of beauty treatments, she said: "I wanted to offer an opportunity to discover what could be achieved without the initial worry of any financial outlay, particularly with treatments they may never have tried before.” Yet Amy wants to emphasize that it’s not all about affordability, “I know from personal experience

will then be able to come and have their beauty treatment once the restrictions are lifted. She hopes that their appointment will leave them looking and feeling amazing, and also serve as a gentle yet poignant reminder, to whomever may need one, of just how important that opportunity to experience a bit of luxury and pampering can really be for them. “Treating ourselves every once in a while is deserved, we are worth it and we should all feel good about ourselves on a daily basis.” The competition is held monthly. People can enter themselves or nominate someone they think deserves it. Treatments available are: Henna Brows LVL Lashes, Million Dollar Facial, Mini Facial Miracle Mask, Dermaplane Micro-needling, Super Facial Hydrate and Super Facial Glow. There is, of course, no obligation to book any further appointments after a winning treatment.

I love going to LK Brows & Beauty for treatments. I previously hadn’t really bothered with salon beauty treatments but after one visit I knew I would be making it a regular appointment! Alongside the treatment itself being carried out professionally and to a fantastic standard, I was made to feel properly pampered. I came away feeling absolutely fabulous and excited for my next treatment. Amy really demonstrates how important it is to take time out for yourself and give yourself a little treat every once in a while. Emma Wylie

Children come first

In all family court proceedings the children of the family come first, as the paramount consideration in cases under the Children Act or as “the first consideration” of the Court in financial proceedings within divorce under the Matrimonial Causes Act. No one is likely to be surprised at this and yet parents who are in conflict about the amount of time the child should spend with each of them after separation, whether in or outside a marriage, still take up an inordinate amount of resources from the court and support services. Cafcass (Children and Family Court Advisory Support Service) received last December an increase in 9.5% of new private law cases on the previous year December 2019, totalling 3,510 new cases involving 5,371 children. Mediation is not being ignored as there has in the last year also been an increase in MIAMs (Mediation Information and Assessment Meetings) which means that parents are attempting mediation. But clearly there are still many occasions where the mediation process fails and the dispute ends up in court.

Mothering Sunday is fast approaching. Mother’s and Father’s Days are not hard to agree on, but mediation and other dispute resolution approaches could reduce the number of children cases ending up in court. Consult your family law specialist for advice concerning these options.

Don’t let dodgy DIY become a drama or invalidate your home insurance Spring is in the air – and with the green shoots of new beginnings comes a desire to tick off all those DIY jobs. But a word of warning before you pick up those power tools or reach for that repair kit, tackling jobs around the home or garden that you are not qualified to do can damage your health as well as your wealth! Each year over 200,000 people find themselves in A&E as a result of a DIY accident in the home or garden. These range from mishaps with power tools and lawnmowers, to falls from ladders and slip ups with knives and scalpels – according to RoSPA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Over-ambition and lack of knowledge are two of the biggest factors in DIY accidents causing death and injury. But as well as potentially damaging your health, you could be putting your property at risk if the DIY dream turns to disaster. Apparently, one in five of us hate doing DIY, but are happy to attempt jobs that may be out of our league in an attempt to save money. However, a bodge job could lead to double drama. Recent research reveals that, worryingly, 29 per cent of DIY-ers said they would attempt plumbing jobs, just under a quarter (24 per cent) would undertake electrical work while 13 per would try to fix the boiler or central heating system. However, for safety reasons, electrical, plumbing and gas work should be carried out by a registered professional. Tackling jobs you’re not qualified for could also invalidate your home insurance, leaving you liable for the cost of repairing any subsequent damage. Water damage is among the most common household claims. However, policies exclude damage which has occurred gradually or, damage which could have been avoided by regular maintenance – such as cleaning gutters of leaves. So, it’s important to keep on top of regular home maintenance jobs which could otherwise damage your property over time. The top 10 maintenance jobs in UK homes: 1 Servicing the boiler 3 Repairing cracked walls 3 Painting and repairing exterior paintwork 4 Fixing a damp problem 5 Replacing boundary fences or walls 6 Blocked or damaged gutters 7 Repairing damaged brickwork or mortar 8 Fitting smoke or carbon monoxide detectors 9 Replacing sealant around baths and showers or cracked shower trays or baths 10 Updating electrical wiring. So, if you are unqualified, unsure or inexperienced – the message is simple ‘leave it to the professionals’.
