f you have a dog with you then he or she will definitely be interested! If they haven’t spotted you on the upper path, above the lake, a shy rabbit can often be seen grazing far ahead. Unfortunately a closer look often isn’t possible because as soon as they spot you they are off and running. The rabbit is not native to England. They were brought in from South-West France by the Normans in the 12th century and kept in captivity in warrens as a source of meat and fur. As with many imported species, though, many escaped into the wild. Now there are estimated to be around 40 million rabbits in Britain. Spring is the time for rabbits to reproduce. Within their burrows, which can be one to two metres long, they can have several litters of four to five kits a year. That’s an awful lot of rabbits! The nest at

the end of the tunnel is lined with grass, moss and rabbit fur. It seems that their high reproductive rate is partly due to the fact that wild rabbits rarely live longer than two years and that 90% of their young die within their first year. They fall prey to predators such as foxes, weasels, badgers, snakes and birds of prey such as owls and kestrels. If a rabbit spots a potential threat it will freeze and warn others by thumping a hind foot (I’ve often heard our pet rabbits doing this). Rabbits feed mainly on grass and leafy weeds but will eat anything that is basically green. They will also gnaw at tree bark in the winter months when green food is in short supply. I didn’t know this but apparently rabbits re-swallow up to 80% of their faeces in order to use their food more efficiently in a process known as ‘refection’! Interesting!

SAVE YOUR PHARMACY COMMUNITY
ng ndi spe
What you need to know about the cuts we are facing and how you can help
s cut
Save your local pharmacy I
n 2015, the Department of Health wrote to the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC) announcing they were cutting funding for community pharmacies in 2016/17. This cut will put up to a quarter of local pharmacies at risk of closure including ourselves. We understand the financial challenges that the NHS faces and want to help find solutions to these, but the consequences of this action by the Government will be incredibly difficult for the community pharmacy network to withstand. We are very concerned that if the cuts are implemented as proposed there will be a loss of quality, the risk of a reduction in patient safety, and diminished access to the care provided to patients. At Hampton pharmacy we do far more than dispense medicines: we clarify confusing doctors' orders, provide medical advice when GP appointments are so hard to come by as many of you may have experienced, offer emotional support and provide local people services such as free delivery, free flu vaccinations and waistaway – which is conducted by our in house dietician — all of which are being overlooked by the government
and should be supported by both the community and the NHS. Cutting funding would be especially hard on many of our patients and it would squeeze emergency services and GPs even further. During an age when many GPs are so hardpressed that they try to get you out of the door before you've even sat down, pharmacists are a vital source of common-sense advice. People often go to their GP because they don't understand very basic medicine — such as the fact that a cold can last for several weeks. They want a magic bullet 'cure', not realising that over-the-counter remedies are the most effective. Above all, they want reassurance. A wise pharmacist can be the answer. They're certainly far more dependable than the 111 service. So, why allow a quarter of them to close? If anything, we need more, not fewer. It's the small, independent pharmacies like ourselves that are most at risk because we don't have the ability to absorb financial cuts in the way big businesses can. We do try to provide a really personal service — the service that our patients rely on for their human touch... How can we allow such a precious resource to slip away? I encourage you all to support it.
How can you help? • Make the most of the NHS services available on your doorstep at Hampton Pharmacy. • Write a letter or email to your MP, telling him or her that you want him to back your local pharmacies. • Along with other independent pharmacies we are conducting a petition, so please help get this Parliamentary petition to 100,000 signatures, so the issue will have to be debated in Parliament. • Follow us on Facebook and share our posts. At Hampton Pharmacy we like to think that we are more than just a place to get medicines. We provide a range of NHS services and ensure people can get faceto-face, healthcare professional advice without an appointment.

In association with O&H Hampton
Hampton Gazette caught up with Erin to find out about her training and the role itself . Erin explains: "In December 2015, I signed up to be a candidate for the 2016 role of Peterborough’s MYP. I attended a training day in which I filmed my manifesto video that was then used as part of the election process. It’s amazing to say that Hampton College sent 903 votes of the 4361 votes throughout Peterborough. I received just over 1,300 votes but Samantha Brown from the Voyager Academy championed with just over 2,000 votes, I fully support the issues she raised within her speech. I made
some great friends through this experience and will still be taking part in Youth Council as their secretary. In the next 9 months (until sign up opens for next year) I aim to raise the profile of the Youth Council and get a wider spread of opinions from as many young people as possible. Due to the amazing turnout we got from the Youth MP election votes, we are well on our way to getting the Gold Youth Voice Award after winning the Silver Youth Voice Award this year for the participation of the students in the ‘Make your mark!’ campaign."

Winter in the Hamptons... O Winter in the Hamptons proved a massive inspiration for all you photographers out there.
&H Hampton recently ran another of its popular photography competitions and asked for shots that best depict the Hamptons community in winter. Residents responded with some eye-catching images evoking a season of sombre beauty. With a field of high quality entries to choose from, judges finally awarded first prize in the over-16 category to Kar Lee of Hampton Vale for his superb panoramic shot, which encapsulates the competition’s theme so beautifully. And 10-year-old Rhianne McNair, of Hampton Vale, wins the 16 and under category for a thoughtful and
atmospheric dog’s eye view of winter. Congratulations to our winners, who each receive an Amazon Fire 7 tablet. But that’s not the end – O&H Hampton will be publicising many of the other excellent entries to provide more insights into life in the Hamptons. Keep an eye out for them on the O&H Hampton website, Flickr pages, Twitter feed and the Hampton Gazette Facebook page. O&H Hampton’s Roger Tallowin said: “We really enjoyed the beauty and variety of entries we received for this winter competition. They remind us what a rich natural environment Hamptons residents have on their doorstep, and how they appreciate it.”

e are looking forward to sports week, sports days, Year 6 Residential and of course preparing our entries for the annual Film Awards! Our other big news is that our recent application to the National College to become a Teaching School was successful. ‘Teaching schools are outstanding schools that work with others to provide high-quality training and development to new and experienced school staff. They are part of the government's plan to give schools a central role in raising standards by developing a self-improving and sustainable school-led system’ (Gov.uk) Teaching Schools take a leading role in recruiting and training new entrants to the profession. They identify and develop leadership potential; they provide support for other schools, and work with
schools in supporting the raising of standards. They raise standards through supporting other schools, engage in research and development, and ensure that the most talented school leaders are spotted and supported to become successful future leaders. Our Ofsted judgment was a great achievement and we believe that this next chapter for our school again reflects the outstanding practice and overall commitment of our school staff to providing the highest quality education to pupils as well as working with other schools sharing good practice and raising pupil attainment and progress. In addition to this, two of our staff have also been appointed as SLEs (Specialist Leaders in Education). Congratulations to Miss Porter and Miss Hammond on this achievement.

SCHOOLS
Hampton College
Vale Primary School Children at Hampton Vale Primary School have been looking to the past and across frontiers in their latest learning with Shakespeare, World War Two and journeys around the world among their themes.
So it begins, the summer term and exam season… After last year’s successful trial of the summer polo shirt in secondary phase, students are able to wear a school polo shirt instead of the white shirt/blouse and tie during the summer term. This is entirely optional.
T
he College are offering a number of lunchtime and after school sessions to support students preparing for GCSE/ AS and A Level examinations. In addition to the term time offer, there were some fantastic sessions running over the Easter holidays, which students really enjoyed and benefitted hugely from. At the end of last term, the school held a Collapsed Day for all at the Secondary Phase. The focus being British Values, with the aim of exploration of British values exhibited in Hampton. All students were off timetable for the day and participated in sessions such as: • Core values of Hampton College / decision making in Peterborough • Quiz: History of Peterborough and Hampton • Multicultural values • Archery / Aeroball / Lasertag / Construction / Fencing
The students had a fabulous day and we were very proud of their achievements.
Student Success We are very proud of our Year 11 student who has been awarded a scholarship at Hull City Football Club. This is a really fantastic achievement congratulations!
This term sees some fantastic celebrations: our annual Musical Soiree, another fantastic TeachMeet, Prom, the Year 13 Leavers event and more 10 Year Celebrations.
A
s part of their learning about China, children have shopped for ingredients at Tesco, Serpentine Green, tasted various flavours of tea and cooked and enjoyed noodles, crispy seaweed and prawn crackers. In contrast, they have also enjoyed preparing for an English tea party, which included cucumber sandwiches and traditional scones. The Year Five children’s production of “Shakespeare Rocks” was performed to the rest of the school and to parents and carers in the week leading up to the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death. The production followed Year Five’s learning about some of his most well-known plays as they tried to answer the question, “Why is he famous?” Author Eamonn Reilly, creator of the Harriet the Horrible character, has also paid a visit, during which he read from some of his books and discussed the work of an author. As the summer term continues, the Hampton Vale team is looking forward to a number of events, including sports day, a Maths Week with a Bake-Off theme and a number of residential visits and educational visits.

Spring is finally here! I am so happy. Lighter evenings, spring flowers and baby signets. Every morning I wakeup with the sun streaming through my window and get that fuzzy spring feeling. Now is the perfect time to put away those dark autumnal eyeshadows and lipsticks and bring out the light and dreamy pinks and greens. As is normally the case with a spring day look, it’s quite minimalist, but this seasons makeup trends are not all about the pastels. Designers have been throwing in a striking pink lip, green eyeliner and even a subtle use of glitter. Yes glitter! So I have looked at some gorgeous makeup and put together a beautiful spring palette for you. I hope it gives you with a little inspiration as we enjoy springtime.

After the over indulgence of Christmas my eating habits just got worse so I decided to do the C9 cleanse to detox but also to re think my eating habits. By day 3 I had a surge of energy and my skin looked and felt better. It’s very easy to follow and helped me eat healthily again. I was amazed to have lost 10lbs by the end of it but more importantly I felt detoxed! I still drink the Aloe Vera gel as the health benefits are immense. I have since had friends who have gone on to do the C9 and have loved it as well." A.Lewis, Hampton Vale

MARAHANI CIVIC AWARD BUSINESS FOCUS
Photo: Farooq receives the Community Civic Award from Mayor of Peterborough Coun John Peach
Farooq receives Council Civic Award Farooq Mohammed, who runs Maharanis Indian restaurant in Hampton Hargate, has been recognised with a Community Civic Award for consistent and long-term charitable support. The citation also pays tribute to his funding of free breakfast for two local schools.
T
he award follows the presentation of the Melvyn Jones Fellowship from Lions Club International (Hampton Gazette last issue) and reflects Farooq’s commitment to helping those not always able to help themselves. At a ceremony held at the Town Hall recently, Mayor of Peterborough Coun John Peach said: “Farooq is an individual who gives willingly of his time and resources to improve the lives of others; we are delighted to show our appreciation on their behalf.”
Since 2003 Farooq has opened his restaurant to a variety of charities enabling them to hold vital fundraising events for which he makes no charge. From small beginnings this initiative has evolved into a city-wide concept with two or three such events taking place every month. Farooq meets the full cost of food and staffing and will often ’top up’ the funds raised as well as providing a raffle prize. Farooq thanked all those who support the charity dinners by attending, donating
a raffle prize and helping sell tickets. “These events require team work, everyone working together to give guests a good time as well as raising much-needed funds,” he said. Launched in 2014, the Civic Awards scheme is designed to recognise individuals, organisations and businesses who make a real difference to the local community. MONEY ADVICE
MONEY MATTERS
by Mark Laws, Bird & Laws Certified Public Accountants Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Laws info@birdandlaws.co.uk and if of general interest we will publish them here.
Chancellor George Osborne recently announced a special tax-free allowances for people making money from the internet. Selling on the Web: Traders from 6 April 2016 can now earn £1,000 free of tax from selling via auction and selling websites, such as eBay and Gumtree. If you make money from the internet, flogging goods stacked up in your garage, for instance, or renting out the garage itself, then that money can be taxable. That’s if you are working as a trader. Are you a micro-entrepreneur (as Mr Osborne calls it), selling services online or renting out all or part of your home? The first £1,000 of income from your online sales will be tax free, although you won’t be Bird & Laws Holme Road Yaxley Peterborough PE7 3NA Certified Public Accountants supporting local businesses with cost-effective accountancy and taxation service for many years. able to take off your running expenses before calculating the total. Micro-entrepreneurs only have to declare income above the £1,000 threshold for tax purposes. Accommodation: When it comes to renting out furnished accommodation - as many people are doing by using sites including Airbnb and Ownersdirect - there is already a Rent a Room scheme that rose to £7,500 from 6 April 2016. You will be able to use the new property allowance at the same time, though not for the same part of the home. So, for instance, you could rent out the spare room using the Rent a Room scheme and use the new £1,000 allowance to save tax on renting out a parking space on the drive. The big question is whether you are a trader in the first place?
