Hello and welcome to the September issue of the Hampton Gazette. We hope you all enjoyed the summer holidays and the great weather! TRAVEL MORE SUSTAINABLY! A joint initiative between the charities Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) and Sustrans, working alongside Travelchoice at Peterborough City Council will see residents in Hampton benefiting from advice and support on sustainable travel this summer. “We aim to encourage as many Hampton residents as possible to consider changing some of their short, regular car trips for a more sustainable alternative,” explains PECT’s Andrew Ellis. “Whether it’s through walking, cycling, car sharing or taking public transport there’s so many different options to help the environment, save money, and improve your health and fitness!” PECT will be knocking on the doors of households in the Hamptons and will be offering residents help and advice, including personalised travel plans and the latest literature, to

encourage long-term behaviour change around sustainable travel. Previous and similar projects have been a great success, seeing a 20% increase in walking trips and 27% increase in the number of cycling trips taken. The project launches in the week beginning 1st August, and it will then run through to September 2016 – in this time visiting thousands of households in the local area. This project has been made possible with the support of funding from the Department for Transport through the Sustainable Travel Transition Year funding and Travelchoice.

For more information on the project and to find out how to get involved, visit the website at www.pect.org.uk/travel. 4

Hampton Tiddlers’ visit to Hamerton Zoo The weather was kind for a fantastic turnout on our summer day out. After a train ride and picnic there were happy faces all round from carers and children which makes it all worthwhile in our volunteers’ eyes. by Emma Pilarski Summer holidays have previously seen a drop in numbers but not this year. Week on week our group proves popular! We are one of the very few groups that run throughout the school holidays and this summer we had some excellent sessions! July was all about wind chimes, sock puppets, messy foam fun, Music Bugs taster, nursery rhymes and planting! In August, we had had a picnic at Stanton Square making all things

summer - sunshine, Olympic torches, jelly fish in bottles, 3D ladybirds and butterflies! We also had a taster session with Toddler Band and, of course, our popular story time session. We always welcome taster sessions from activities suitable for our age group. If you are an activity provider, or know of anyone who may be interested, please speak to one of our volunteers for a date for the future. Check out the pictures on our facebook page.

For the

craic and campaigns! There’s a lot more to the WI (Women’s Institute), than you might know already. Imagine if you could spend one evening a month in the company of some great friends, learn a fantastic new skill or craft and at the same time make a difference to other people’s lives. This year in June, WI members voted overwhelmingly to adopt two new campaigns (we call them resolutions). The first was a resolution to campaign for supermarkets to sign up to a voluntary agreement to stop wasting so much food. The second resolution is a campaign to improve access for families and carers to relatives who are Dementia sufferers when they need hospitalisation. Every year, a member of the WI, someone like you or me, puts forward an issue for a campaign that they feel needs changing or supporting. Many different ideas are submitted and through due process they are whittled down to two, which the rest of the members decide to adopt or not. In recent years, WI members have voted to adopt resolutions

on several important issues including ‘SOS for Honey Bees’, ‘More Midwives’, ‘Save Our Libraries’ and the ‘Time to Talk’ Organ Donation campaign. Historically, WI campaigns have included the ‘Right to Analgesia During Childbirth’, the ‘Right For Parents to Visit Sick Children in Hospital’, ‘Fair Pay for Women’ and ‘Mandatory Screening for Breast Cancer’. With such serious campaigns you might wonder how we managed to have fun, but we promise you we do. We take making sure we enjoy ourselves and learning new skills as seriously as we take campaigning for our adopted causes. On Saturday 24 September, the Huntingdon and Peterborough Federation of WIs will be hosting The Big WI Bash at Serpentine Green, Hampton. 10am-4pm So, please come and see us and learn all about the WI and how you can be a part of making history, improving lives and having huge amounts of fun into the bargain. We look forward to seeing you there.

If so, you may be interested to know that we currently have three vacancies on the Parish Council following the 5 May Elections when eleven councillors were elected without a poll. Notices of the vacancy have been posted on the Parish Notice Boards and details of this vacancy and the appointment process are available on the Parish Council website. All we need now are some residents who are interested in joining the Council. All qualifying applicants are invited to attend the Parish Meeting commencing at 7.00pm on Thursday 1 September at the Tesco Community Meeting Room at Serpentine Green where they will be interviewed and asked to give a short presentation on a local issue: What steps do the Parish Council take to deal with litter in Hampton and what alternatives/additional measures would you propose if you were co-opted on to the Parish Council? The Councillors present will then vote on their selection and will appoint their new Councillors from those who have attended and given a presentation. If you would like to register you interest please contact: The Parish Clerk, Kate Day or Deputy Clerk, Gemma Cade by telephone - 07391 497 561 during office hours (9am-1pm Mon-Thu) or e-mail clerk@hamptonpc.org.uk

You won’t always be this lucky The risks of living in a cohabiting relationship in the event that you separate, cannot be emphasised enough. Perfectly intelligent and otherwise well informed people still believe that there is legal protection for cohabiting couples in the event that they go their separate ways – usually it’s the woman who needs the financial protection. Sadly there will be none, unless she has a stake in a jointly owned property, or she has agreed terms with her partner in a COHABITATION AGREEMENT! A case that has recently hit the headlines, is that of Kirsty Cahill who lived with a man twenty years her senior, George Farrer, and went on to have 3 children with him in the 10 years they were together. Ms Cahill had repeatedly asked Mr Farrer to marry her, as she feared financial insecurity if the worst happened. When it did, and she took him to court, she successfully

argued that she was entitled to all of the proceeds of sale of one of Mr Farrer’s investment properties that he put in Miss Cahill’s sole name, worth £800,000. He did not even receive back the £140,000 deposit he had put down on the purchase. The majority of cohabitation splits do not end so fortunately. Or, in the case of Mr Farrer, so badly. This case illustrates the unreliability of outcomes for cohabitees. The number of people living together and not marrying is rising year on year. Most of them probably think that if they do separate, they will both be reasonable and fair in sorting out the finances. So often this does not happen, and the law simply can’t help you. Seek help from a Family Law specialist if you have any concerns about these issues.

No doubt we all know someone who has been stung by a wasp, or we may have even been stung ourselves. It’s the sting that we fear, with some of us being prone to an allergic reaction, which can be very serious. It’s no wonder then that we view wasps with a certain disdain and wariness. But wasps do have a useful purpose. They are fierce predators and this is to our advantage because it means that they hunt and eat almost every insect that harms crops, for example, aphids, flies, blackfly, spiders and caterpillars. All of these they feed to the young in their nest. The adults themselves feed on nectar and by doing so act as helpful pollinators. It is at this time of year (late summer) that we find wasps a problem, though. This is because in the previous months the worker wasps have been fed with a sugary food secreted by wasp larvae. When the queen stops laying eggs and therefore no more larvae are produced the worker wasps are deprived of their sugary feast and look elsewhere. And this is where the problem occurs for us humans. If the weather is still good we are often outside eating our sugary treats and drinks and are, therefore, a great

attraction to worker wasps. One notable difference between wasps and honey bees is that wasps can sting over and over again whereas honey bees sting just once and then die. The purpose of the sting is to immobilise their prey and to defend their nest. Eventually, however, all these worker wasps will die off as the cold weather approaches, with only queen wasps hibernating through winter, having mated first with a male drone (fertile male wasps). All the worker wasps are infertile females. The new queens will awake in the spring ready to form new colonies in their characteristic papery nests. To make these nests the wasps chew wood, turn it into pulp and then form a nest of hexagonal cells. It is said that a Chinese official, Cai Lun, living around AD 79, was inspired to invent papermaking by watching wasps build their nests, but I have found that there are other claims and dates for how paper was first produced.

Why not get

involved?

The Hampton Nature Reserve is a haven for wildlife with hundreds of ponds, protected for its large great crested newt population and rare aquatic plants including the endangered bearded stonewort. The Reserve is owned by O&H and managed by Amphibian and Reptile conservation charity Froglife. We welcome local residents to get involved. At the moment we are really busy with weekly butterfly surveys taking place, fortnightly reptile surveys and also water

Our biggest recruitment challenge to date...

F

ostering has changed dramatically in recent years, making it harder than ever before for local authorities to recruit good foster carers. Peterborough City Council explain why they are having to ask for more than ever before from prospective new foster carers, and how to get in touch if you can help. We’ve had great success over the past few years recruiting more than 80 new fostering households - however this, combined with several other factors have resulted in some significant changes in local fostering. So what does that mean for a prospective foster carer in Peterborough? “You’ve recruited 80 new foster carers, how can you still need more?” we hear you ask… Government led adoption reforms and newer initiatives such as “Fostering to Adopt” have seen greater numbers of younger children securing permanency at an earlier stage, meaning less are placed in temporary foster care – an excellent result, but one which means we’ve seen a drop in the need for foster carers able to care for babies and toddlers and with many foster carers already approved for these groups, demand currently outweighs supply. Today, more than 60% of the children in our care are aged 10 and above and it’s in this area we intend to focus our recruitment efforts for the next 12 months. So what do you need to know? Whilst the welfare of young people is our top priority, ensuring the wellbeing of our carers is equally important and we will always look to avoid making placements which would compromise your existing family dynamic. Caring for older children, whilst undoubtedly more rewarding carries a greater risk making it difficult for us to place teenagers with fostering

families who already have younger children at home – for this reason, we are looking for carers whose children have already grown up, moved out or are leaving for university later this year. As a foster carer, you’re so much more than just a bed for the night, you’re an advocate for young people and will need to attend various meetings, to contribute to the development of their care plan, or to review their progress with your supervising social worker. It’s important you are available to attend these meetings, which isn’t always possible when working full time. That’s why applicants will need to demonstrate their availability, so if you’re working part time, semi-retired, or have the security to put your skills and experience to good use without reliance on fostering to provide a regular income, then we’d love to talk to you. Finally, you must have a spare bedroom. It might sound obvious, but young people in care are already in a period of significant change, a personal space to call their own is essential to give some stability during an otherwise confusing time. We’re realistic about the challenge we face,

and we know that many of the people who might make the best carers will have other commitments which prevent them from doing so right now, but if just one percent of Peterborough residents could nominate one potential carer who ticked the boxes above, that could mean dozens of new foster carers, better futures for children, and more money for the local authority to invest back into the services families need most.

If you’d like more information on becoming a foster carer for Peterborough City Council, you can request an information pack by calling 01733 317427 or visiting our website www.peterboroughfostering.co.uk Hampton Gazette | September 2016 | E: info@hamptongazette.co.uk | www.hamptongazette.co.uk

Games, food meeting new people On 17 July, Hampton’s first ‘Big Picnic’ was held, near the skate park on Beaumont Way, for the Hampton residents to get to know each other and have a great day out in the sun. The organisers included Kingsgate and CSK Hampton. They had a vision for the local people to have the opportunity to get to know each other and just enjoy what Hampton has to offer. The event saw families out with their children, and older couples enjoying the hot weather. It is hoped that the ‘Big Picnic’ will be the first of many more to come. Loads of games were played such as kwik cricket and tug-of-

war. There were also races, but not everyone wanted to run around because of the weather, so some just spent their time relaxing. An organiser of the event, Rachel said: “It didn’t take a lot of organising for the big picnic and was at no cost so it was a great opportunity to do. It was lovely just to see everyone enjoying the sunshine and having fun. A highlight of the day was to see the Red Arrows fly past.”

Your guide to

Living in Hampton

In association with

Building the Hamptons began just two decades ago, but its newness is only skin deep. Where we now walk, marine dinosaurs once swam.

When dinosaurs ruled the Hamptons

T

he Hamptons are set in a historic landscape whose story stretches back 160 million years to the Jurassic Age, the era of the dinosaurs. During the Jurassic, a tropical sea covered the land where the Hamptons now stand. When the sea retreated, the Jurassic rocks on the seabed gave rise to the rich Oxford clay underlying the Hamptons.

Treasure beneath our feet

The clay is an internationally recognised treasure trove of fossils, testament to the teeming life that flourished in the Jurassic sea. Fossils of longextinct marine reptiles excavated from the brick pits can be seen in museums across Europe and the US. They include plesiosaurs, pliosaurs and ichthysaurs, which could grow to over sixteen metres long. You can see a good selection on your doorstep at Peterborough Museum The Jurassic also left another rich legacy to this area. Its Oxford clay has been prized for building since Roman times.

Bricks that built Britain

Brickmaking was a thriving local cottage

industry for centuries, but the opening of the Great Northern Railway main line through Peterborough in 1850 was a game-changer. It made it possible to transport heavy materials, including bricks, much more efficiently across the country. In 1891 ‘Fletton process’, named after the village where it was invented, speeded up the brickmaking process considerably. The Hamptons became the national centre of the thriving Fletton brick industry, and the UK’s leading producer of bricks for much of the 20th century. It is estimated that 5 million UK houses are built using Fletton bricks. You can see for yourself – Fletton bricks have had a major influence on the appearance of Peterborough.

Legacy in the landscape

Though the Hamptons is no longer a centre of brickmaking, the industry’s unique legacy is embedded in the landscape. In other parts of the country, brick companies dug down to extract clay. But around the Hamptons, where clay was close to the surface, they scooped it

out in a series of strips, creating a landscape of ridges and furrows. These then filled with water to create shallow ponds which are now ideal habitats for a wide range of rare and unusual wildlife and plants. This is most prominent in Hampton Nature Reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation, which has 300 ponds and least 27 butterfly species, 18 species of dragonfly and 120 species of water beetle, not to mention one of Europe’s most successful populations of great crested newts.

Heritage preserved

It would have been an easy choice for a developer lacking in vision or imagination to level and reclaim all the land which is now the Hamptons. Instead, O&H Hampton has worked closely with landscape architects and wildlife organisations to preserve this priceless historical and environmental legacy for everyone to enjoy.

memorylane Having read the past two Hampton Gazettes, it has become apparent that there are a number of ex ‘matelots’ (naval ratings) living within the Hampton area, so I thought I would add to the ‘lamp swinging’ (naval term meaning stories) by telling my own.

I

joined the navy in August 1966 at the age of 16; the result of listening to my father’s many naval stories from the war years. Some good, some funny, some sad and some horrific, which included the evacuation of Allied troops from the Prisoner of War camps in Singapore, but it gave me the encouragement to apply, and I soon found myself, after interviews and medicals, travelling to HMS Raleigh near Plymouth to undergo my basic Naval Training. Having been brought up, and worked within, the hotel that my parents managed in

Great Yarmouth, I had gained a degree of experience within that trade, and so decided to become an Officer’s Steward. It turned out to be a good choice, as by the age of 22, I was in the uniform of a Petty Officer. In the late sixties, Britain still had major worldwide commitments, and as such, a number of overseas bases; Singapore, Hong Kong, Gibraltar, Malta to name but a few, which gave those of us serving the opportunity to see a world that was still recovering from WWII. I was no exception, and in 5 years had been to most of the continents.

I served on a number of ships including two aircraft carriers (Ark Royal and Eagle) and 5 destroyers including HMS Sheffield, which now lies at the bottom of the South Atlantic. Fortunately, I was on HMS Antrim during the Falklands War which, despite major damage, returned home safely. In 1983, I left the Royal Navy as a Chief Petty Officer, to pursue another career, but the 17 years I served were the best years of my life. It is hard for anyone who has not been part of the forces to understand, but as the Royal Naval Association say ‘once Navy Always Navy’. A truth for most of us who have served.

Christ the Servant King

New assistant vicar

My name is Rachel and starting The Parish Church ofI’m Hampton as Curate (Assistant Vicar) at CSK this month, following maternity leave. My husband Francis (a teacher) and daughter Abigail (5 months) and I moved to Hampton in July amidst three weeks of glorious sunshine, so we were even more convinced Hampton is a great place to move to! As historians by training, we’ve spent the summer investigating all the local historical and archaeological sites and going on long walks, dragging poor Abi with us. We have got to know some of the local area and are now looking forward to something even more important: meeting the people. I am a Pioneer Curate, which means I have a special responsibility for spending time outside of the church building, rather than in it, and looking at new ways to build community, although of course I’ll be doing all the ‘traditional’ vicar stuff too. Other than investigating old ruins, you may find me in the baking aisle of Tesco (bit of a foodie), out cycling or in the pub – please do stop me for a chat!

Why not make autumn that little bit extra special and do some fun things that all the family can enjoy? Here's a list of awesome autumn activities that you can do with the kids this year. • Leaf jumping Autumn just wouldn’t be autumn without jumping in a pile of fresh leaves. •  Go to a farm Wrap up in your woolly hats and gloves and head to the farm to see all the animals. If you’re from the Peterborough surrounding area, Sacrewell Farm on the A47 is the perfect family day out. • Make your own Halloween costumes, nothing like starting early! Get the whole family together and make your costumes from scratch! • Stay cosy and have a duvet day in. Watch your favourite movie and get snuggled up on the sofa with some popcorn. • Pick up a new book and get reading with the whole family. • Head to an indoor play area This is something fun for the whole family. Mums can sit back and have a natter with a cuppa whilst the kids run riot and make a mess (that you don’t have to clean up). Good places to check out for this are, Activity World and Big Sky Adventure Play. • Have a craft day Get out the coloured card, glitter, pipe cleaners and glue and even start making things for Christmas! • Go for a walk get to know nature better. • Bake There’s nothing better than the smell of a freshly baked pie on a chilly day. • Paint some pine cones all the colours of the rainbow.

BUSINESS FOCUS

Busy Bees children’s nursery refurbishment plans Busy Bees children’s nursery, in Hampton Hargate, is re-launching on Saturday, 10 September with a fun-filled event between 11am and 2pm.

T

he nursery, based on Hargate Way, is inviting parents, families and the local community to celebrate the completion of its impressive refurbishment. There will be children’s entertainment throughout the day and lots of family-friendly activities – no need to book just simply show up on the day. Parents and children from the local area will be given the chance to have a guided tour around the nursery to see the brand new interior décor which has been introduced. New flooring in most areas throughout the nursery will be unveiled on September 10th and all the décor throughout the bathroom, kitchen and play areas has been updated and revamped. The nursery will also be providing taster platters from Busy Bees’ silver awarded delicious and nutritious menu – a rubber stamp guarantee from the UK’s Soil Association that all food served will be free from harmful additives, responsibly sourced and easily traced. Staff and parents will also be baking a number of treats for the day including cakes and biscuits with all proceeds going to Winston’s Wish. The new look nursery will be even warmer and welcoming to support the Busy Bees ethos of providing quality childcare through engaging play and children learning in a stimulating setting.

Jenny Blin, business manager at Busy Bees in Hampton Hargate, said: “We’re extremely excited to unveil the new look nursery to the local community. In terms of the development, the baby room has been completely remodeled to create a new sleep and quiet activities area and an even bigger play area for younger babies. High walls have been introduced in the pre-school rooms to reduce noise levels and provide a full separation. “We’re encouraging parents and families to come and join us on Saturday September 10th and join us as we embark on a new era. This nursery now feels like brand new premises and we hope that the local community get behind the event and come and join us for some great fun!” Following on from the launch event, the nursery on Hargate Way will be running Enrolment Week12-16th September with activities planned for all ages. Parents with children are invited to join the nursery between 10am – 11am every day that week to take part in a number of themed events: • Monday – Tuff Tray Play • Tuesday – Number Colours • Wednesday – Wild Welly Wednesday • Thursday – Sensational Science • Friday – Imagination Play Day

Mobile Phone Tax Relief for Limited Companies HMRC allow limited companies to provide a director / employee with one mobile phone which can be used in both a business and personal capacity without causing benefit in kind tax issues. However, in order to be able to claim the cost, the phone contract has to be in the name of the limited company, as opposed to a personal contract. You cannot simply pay the monthly phone bill from the companies bank account, the contract itself needs to be between the limited company and the phone provider. It is possible to speak to your mobile phone provider to ask them to officially transfer the contract to the company. If you are going to do this you need to be careful that they don’t put you on a more expensive plan.

However, if you are on a low price monthly plan and do not wish to change your contract, what you could do instead is simply have your limited company purchase a new mobile phone handset directly. This would be allowable as a business expense, meaning 20% corporation tax would be saved on the cost of the handset. Depending on whether the company is VAT registered and what VAT scheme they are on, they may also be able to claim the VAT back on the handset. Please be aware that when it comes to claiming mobile phone expenses, the handset will be an asset of the company, so if it is sold any proceeds will be taxable income for corporation tax purposes (and if VAT registered, VAT will be charged on the sale).
