Welcome to the September issue of the Hampton Gazette, your local magazine. Supported by local businesses and residents in Hampton. Proud to be part of the Hampton Community. We are looking forward to a brighter future, so, let’s celebrate and embrace it by saying a huge thank you to the gorgeous Diana Bicu for allowing us to use her photo on this month’s cover. This beautiful baby bump was taken by Tim Steele at Hampton Water. You can’t beat a bit of romance. Our physical, emotional and mental health are the best assets we have and we need to look after ourselves – especially in these times. This month, we caught up with Poonam Anandaraj from Peak Health Clinics,. In this issue, she introduces her new clinic of excellence. Peak Health Clinic has opened in Hampton and is here to help with our health and wellbeing. The goal is to provide the very best, scientifically supported and holistic treatments, as well as advice on all aspects of physiotherapy, acupuncture, health and fitness. Poonam used to work for the NHS and is an expert in her field. The September issue is all about supporting each other, the community and local businesses, both in Hampton and Peterborough. I think Covid-19 has taught us all the value of our community and how important it is. I’ve always loved the community feel of Hampton. Lockdown has been tough for everyone so let’s continue supporting each other. In this issue, we introduce our new ‘Shop Local in Hampton’ page encouraging Hampton residents to support local businesses. We would like to thank our contributors and advertisers for their continuing support to the Hampton Gazette. Don't forget, if you are looking for recommendations for trusted trades people – visit our Handy Numbers section on pages 27–31, and use www.safelocaltrades.com – use trades people you can trust.

September, and it’s time for schools to return for the first time since March for all pupils, rather than just children of key workers and selected year groups. There are many fearful and anxious parents, children and teachers during these challenging times. As the furlough scheme reduces and more people return to work, others may be facing an uncertain future having lost their jobs or knowing that redundancy may come soon. Fearful and anxious business owners and employees. There are those with health issues, whose hospital plans have been delayed. Fearful and anxious patients. Fear and anxiety exist in many peoples lives. The most frequent command in the Bible is “Do not be afraid.” It appears 70 times in the NIV translation and in addition to those 70 there are phrases such as “fear not,”“do not fear,” and other variants. With so many frightening situations constantly popping up in our lives, I don’t think it’s any coincidence that God has given this command so many times not to fear. The Bible isn’t saying, “There is nothing scary so you don’t need to be

scared.” The reality is, life is scary. That, however, doesn’t mean we need to be scared of it. Ten times “do not be afraid,” is followed by, “do not be discouraged.” Being afraid and being discouraged are related. The opposite of “discouraged” is “encouraged.” And encouraged means to be filled with courage. The command, “do not be afraid,” more often than not, is followed by an action that God is or will be taking to help, to give us courage. Jesus gives us the strength and courage we need to face times of anxiety and fear.

The Craft Market Network is holding a week-long handmade craft market at Serpentine Green shopping centre. The event will start on the 12 October and finish on Sunday 18 October. Come along to pick up unique, handmade goodies from local, independent crafters. Whether you’re buying gifts or treating yourself to something nice, you can be sure that you’ll leave with bags full of beautiful, hand-crafted items that put a smile on yours and your loved ones' faces. www.thecraftmarketnetwork.com

In Matthew’s gospel chapter 6 Jesus tells us “do not worry about your life,” and asks the question, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” If you are a worrier, if you would like to find out more about how you can experience supernatural strength and courage in these challenging times, do get in touch with us at CSK Church: we’d love to hear from you. Peters’ Cleaners Award BEST DRY CLEANING BUSINESS 2020

Peters’ Cleaners has been awarded Best Dry Cleaning Business 2020 in the 2020 UK Enterprise Awards ‘This has been a huge boost for us at a challenging time’ said Vicky Whiter, owner and Managing Director of Peters’ Cleaners. ‘We were going from strength to strength and had been awarded Best Dry Cleaner in Cambridgeshire earlier this year when Coronavirus hit’. The judges complimented the Peterborough based multi-award-winning dry cleaner on their longevity, exceptional customer service and innovation. Founded in 1963, Peters’ Cleaners was highlighted for its innovating POD at Serpentine Green, the only fully automated drop-off and pick-up for dry cleaning and laundry in Europe.

The ‘cash point’ style POD at Serpentine Green (next to the Barber’s Pod at the entrance to Boots) means customers can drop off or pick up their dry cleaning and laundry at any time of the day or night, 365 days a year. It is not only convenient but also Covid Safe as there is no human interaction. ‘We have always been known for consistently good cleaning and have gained a reputation over the last 4 years for exceptional customer service, but we wanted to be more accessible to more customers’ explained Vicky. ‘The POD is so easy to use, you simply scan your membership card

to drop your bag and do the same to collect your cleaning once we have notified you it is ready. We do the rest!’ The POD contains a conveyor that delivers the clean clothes to pick-up door once the membership card is scanned. The concept has been used in 5-star and 6-star hotels around the world for staff laundry but this is the first time the concept has been targeted at paying customers. Peters’ Cleaners is due to launch their second POD at Peterborough Station (at the back of Waitrose) in October. Launch had been planned for earlier in the year but was delayed due to Covid-19.

If you want to use the POD you can sign up now at www.peterscleaners.co.uk to receive your membership cards

Flu Vaccination Programme We are now in the advanced stages of planning our Flu Immunisation Programme and will be contacting eligible patient groups with appointment details shortly. This year the flu vaccination programme has been expanded to protect vulnerable people and support the NHS. As well as the usual patients who qualify, a free flu vaccine will also be available to:  People who are on the shielded patient list and members of their household.  All school year groups up to year 7.  People aged over 65, pregnant women, those with pre-existing conditions including at-risk under twos.  People aged 50 to 64 will be invited later in the season for a vaccination Whilst the NHS is under tremendous strain at the moment, we are committed to delivering this year’s flu jab to all of our qualifying patients. Having your flu jab with your GP practice is important as, unlike a local community pharmacy, we have full access to your medical records. Please do not contact the practice to arrange your appointment. We will contact you in the coming weeks In addition, routine vaccinations and immunisations continue to be important and are available at the practice.

Covid-19 has impacted us all greatly and in general practice and the surgery we have been adapting to a new way of working to ensure we continue to provide our patients with the best care we can under the circumstances. I want to update you on some of the changes we have implemented and what we have been doing over the last few months. 

Our opening hours remain the same, we continue with 7am pre-bookable appointments on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Our phone lines are open from 8am and then again at 2pm. We are operating a phone triage system where you will be rang on the day (am/pm sessions) and will speak to either our triage nurse, a Dr or an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. If the patient requires a face to face appointment the clinician will provide and advise of this. 

We are still operating a ‘closed door’ policy for the moment, however this will hopefully change soon as we are awaiting the delivery of a protective shield along the reception for the safety of our staff. We ask you to wear a face covering when coming to see us and then you will then be called in to see the clinician. Once your appointment is complete you will leave via the one way system in the building, this is to enable social distancing and to reduce the footfall within the surgery. 

Nurses and Healthcare Assistants are seeing face to face patients, these are prebookable appointments and we urge if you are due a cervical smear, blood tests, baby immunisations, post surgical care and wound dressings appointments please do ring and book in. 

We are allowing slightly longer face to face appointments to enable us to clean down between patients and change our PPE. 

Flu season is just around the corner and we are currently working on how we are going to arrange our flu clinics and provide this service to those eligible. This is no mean feat and we are currently discussing several ideas on how this may work as the clinics may look a little different to previous years. Please rest assured once arrangements have been confirmed all eligible patients will be contacted.

Hampton Parish Council Hampton Parish Council recently voted to assist Hampton youths with their ongoing educational needs during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The councillors allocated £3000 to purchase electronic devices for all the schools within the Parish. Hampton Hargate received 5 HP Chromebooks at the end of July, and it is hoped that the other schools will claim theirs after the summer holidays. The schools will allocate these to youths who live within the Parish to use during any future school closures to enable them to successfully continue their education via online learning. The next parish council meeting will be held online, via Zoom on Thursday 3 August and the agenda along with the link to join this meeting will be on the Parish website www.Hamptonpc.org.uk on the 28 August. Members of the public are encouraged to join the meeting, comment and ask any questions to the parish councillors during the public forum and as always we are keen to hear any ideas that you may have on how we can assist Hampton residents during this time and continue to make Hampton thrive.

Full fibre broadband is on its way! Peterborough is one of the first UK locations to benefit from new citywide full fibre connectivity following a private investment from CityFibre totalling over £30m What’s the different between full fibre and what I currently have? Residents in parts of Hampton can now connect to one of the fastest broadband services in the world. That’s a dramatic upgrade on what most people currently use and makes all sorts of things – like gaming and using multiple devices – much easier in terms of speeds and data handling. More importantly, full fibre networks offer far greater reliability than existing copper-based networks while being cheaper to maintain and operate – meaning more reliable internet for you!

What is CityFibre’s role in full fibre infrastructure? You may have already seen CityFibre’s distinctive bright green banners in the street as they install the new network throughout the area. We take a phased approach to the roll out of the fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network and install the network quickly, taking only 1-2 days outside your property, while working closely with Peterborough City Council, as well as local communities, to ensure minimum disruption to residents.

Where and how do I sign up? Once a build area is complete, households will be able to take a service direct from our partner Vodafone who will be in contact to advise of the service packages are available. In the meantime, you can register your interest and be advised when the new service is available to you here www.cityfibre.com/register For more general information or to learn more about CityFibre, visit www.cityfibre.com/gigabit-cities or follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook @CityFibre #GigabitPboro

DISCOVERING

discoveringart Hello again, it’s been quiet in my workshop over the last month due to holidays. I have just taken on a stained glass commission and will keep you posted on its progress, check my Facebook page DenneyDesign Stained Glass, or my Instagram DenneyDesign. I’ll be returning to my other job as Art Technician at Hampton College soon, too. This month, I’d like to introduce two more of our unique and talented local artists.

LISA HELIN

LISA HELIN

Lisa studied contemporary art at Nottingham Trent University and then curating at Goldsmiths University in London. Over the last 15 years Lisa has focused on supporting artists in Peterborough to bring their projects from paper to the gallery walls and local community, supporting them to deliver their work. Over that last year, Lisa joined Peterborough open studios and has returned to producing her own work again experimenting with different forms and mediums. Lisa’s current work focuses on sculptural objects and insect taxidermy mixed with references from old English verses. Lisa works with damaged old butterflies from private collects, bringing them back to life for others to enjoy again in the most beautiful and sensitive way. Lisa’s work can be found at www. numonday.co.uk / Lisa Helin Art Studio and on Instagram

MARY GREEN Mary trained as an exhibition designer and along the way tried many different areas of design, and won awards for her work. She then retrained as a clinical Hypnotherapist. In 2016, whilst living with a cancer diagnosis, she made a life changing decision, to follow her dreams of becoming a Mosaic artist.

MARY GREEN

Mary creates quirky, original, crazy mosaics, expressing how she felt during this challenging time. Mary works intuitively following ideas, meandering through colours and shapes and when it’s finished, it’s finished. Using glass, tiles, beads, vintage china, jewellery and anything that fits the bill, reuse and repurpose is her mantra. Mary takes commissions and can incorporate personal items into the work; perfume bottles and memories of loved ones. Last year Mary had her first solo exhibition. Her work is constantly evolving and she is now exploring 3D pieces. Mary also volunteers at the Cancer Wellbeing Service teaching mosaics and working on a Mosaic Garden Project with the patients there. It’s lovely to share the whole beauty of working with Mosaics.

MARY GREEN

Find my work on my Facebook page MaryGreenCreativeArtist . There will be an Etsy shop in the near future.

PROJECT: PATTERN LANDSCAPES This month’s project is courtesy of Jasmine Phillips, art teacher at Hampton College and talented landscape artist in her own right. All you will need for this one is a good fine liner pen, though you can introduce colour before or after the pen work in any way you like. Start with a composition, here are some examples, you could add watercolour now, using strong colour at the front, fading towards the back, then add different patterns to different areas. You can use the patterns to create direction and even perspective. If you wish, you could use pens or crayons to colour after you’ve done the patterns. Have fun and please post your creations on our Facebook page.

filmcritic TWENTY-FIVE 80s FILMS YOU PROBABLY HAVEN'T SEEN Most people will be able to reel off the majority of the best films in the 80s, like Die Hard, Beverly Hills Cop, Back to the Future, E.T, Ghostbusters, The Goonies, Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, Beetlejuice, Top Gun, The Terminator yadda yadda yadda. However, the 80s also gave us a treasure trove of films from all genres; it was the era where film rose to its highest peak The main thing about 80s movies is that most people can reel off the film names; and they have probably seen some of them, but most have only heard the names mentioned through the current wave of nostalgic TV programming (I see you Stranger Things fans) or have seen films that have a touch of the retro, synth heavy soundtracks and scenes that bring on the floods of nostalgia (Thor: Ragnarok, Captain Marvel, Ready Player One, Wonder Woman 84). With this in mind, I wanted to bring to the fore some massively overlooked 80s films, although movie geeks, and those with a degree in VHSology(!) will know ALL of these already! B Do The Right Thing – Spike Lee epic – very apt with BLM at the forefront now. C Broadcast News – Making News fun, and honest! D The Breakfast Club – John Hughes teen epic, focussing on high school teen stereotypes. E The Tall Guy – Jeff Goldblum in his prime. Need I say more? Add in Emma Thompson for a hilarious comedy. F Drugstore Cowboy – Matt Dillon epic about group of drug addict robbers, based on true story. G The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension – what a name right?

Flash Gordon meets National Lampoons, with John Lithgow going mad!

H This is Spinal Tap – Rock Mockumentary ripping the Rock and Roll bands on the 80s. I Heathers – High School Assassins? A little on the nose. Moody, dark. Brilliant. J Fast Times at Ridgemont High – Quintessential High school teen film with laughs and relatable characters. K Tootsie – Dustin Hoffman as a woman, taking the world by storm. Amazing storyline. L Better off Dead – John Cusack doing his best John Cusack in moody teen film that borders on harassment. M The 'Burbs – Tom Hanks and neighbours stalk weird newcomers... ends in hilarity! One liners in every scene! N The Last Starfighter – Teen beats arcade game, gets recruited to save the universe! O War Games – Matthew Broderick hacks US Military, sets off Computer on war path. P Space Camp – Kids get sent to space by accident. Robot and kid save the day. Q St Elmo's Fire – 7 self-centred teens learn the hard way about growing up.

R The Princess Bride – The most 80s film of the 80s! Princess kidnapped, would be saviour is a bit of a flannel... S Revenge of the Nerds – Nerds prove to frat guys that they can “bring it.” T Blue Velvet – David Lynch sets the standard for Detective Films/TV shows with this sleuthy, dark 80s epic. U Transformers (1986) – Cheesy, brilliant, classic. Beats the new franchise hands down. It has The Touch by Stan Bush as the theme for crying out loud. V Red Dawn – Swayze and Sheen in epic “What If?” film about the Cold War. W Biloxi Blues – Matt Broderick learns all about Southern Hospitality in his Army training. X Angel Heart – Mickey Rourke before all the surgery. Classic neo-noir thriller with Robert De Niro. Y Say Anything – John Cusack romance/drama film that goes against the usual grain with something overtly original. Z How to Get Ahead in Advertising – Richard E Grant at his dark and macabre best, testing a different type of subject matter.

If you are ever at a loss for a film to watch and want something a little bit different, then dig out a few of these on any good streaming site or, even, buy the DVD? Richard reviews Films & TV shows on his Big Geek Life blog on Wordpress, and his Podcast, The Film & TV Show.

Lakota (Lover of Nature)

Although the environment in Hampton is a man-made one, even the lakes, it never ceases to amaze me just how much wildlife there is all around us: on the lakes, in the woods, lakeside trees, in and around the grassed areas, in bushes and scrubland, and in our gardens Our garden has seen several bird species recently: first time visitors were a pair of Reed Buntings. I was delighted, especially as this is the first time I have seen this bird anywhere; and to see one visiting our Vale garden was a great joy. They became regular visitors. As with the Dunnock it is possible to mistake them for Sparrows, but the black head and white ringed neck makes them a much brighter bird; although the female is less so, being mostly streaky brown, as with the sparrow. Reed Buntings, as their name suggests, inhabit reed beds, wetlands and farmlands. But increasingly they have been seen in gardens. It is only the female who builds the nest, whilst the male finds a tall reed to proclaim his territory. If a predator comes near to a nest then the female will often feign injury to draw it away from the nest area. The cup shaped nest is usually built on the ground, or just above it, in a

tuft of vegetation or bush, and consists of grass, plant stems, moss and leaves which is then lined with fine grass, and often flower heads. Five to six eggs are laid and once hatched both male and female feed the young. During the breeding season Reed Buntings feed almost entirely on insects but in late summer their diet changes to mainly seeds until the nesting season comes round again. This reliance on seeds is the main reason why they are attracted to garden bird tables during the winter. But it is in reed beds themselves that Reed Buntings roost overnight, knowing they are safe from predators. It seems that Reed Buntings are not particularly faithful in their partnerships. A study around Rutland Water found that 55% of chicks in nests had fathers other than the pair who had made the nest. And 97% of females had ventured away from the established pair bond. Interesting!

THE WONDER OF

flying ants

By now, flying ant day will have passed us by for another year but it is worth reflecting back on this natural phenomena that once almost brought Wimbledon to a standstill The signs can all be seen in advance – a few days of hot weather, not much wind, feeling a little muggy and it’s likely the ants will take to the air. The ants themselves give clues – ants living in greenhouse usually go first and ant colonies in general have a good tidy out ahead of flying (piles of soil and discarded pupal cases outside).

The reason for the day is due to the next generation of male and queen ants making their nuptial flights. On a hot and calm day, sometime between June and September, thousands of winged males and queens from many colonies in the same area will take flight to find a mate. Emerging en-masse is a defence against predators and is all

about safety in numbers, ensuring that at least some of the queens will make it through to establish a new colony. Once mated, the new queens will land, lose their wings and look for a hole or crevice within which to start a new colony. The whole process is over within a few minutes or hours. You can have more than one flying ants day in your local area, as there are several species, and the emergences are in response to local weather conditions. So flying ants day will not be the same date around the country, or even in the same town. Ants are very useful creatures, controlling crop pests, maintaining healthy soils, and dispersing plant

seeds. The sudden emergence of thousands of ants on flying ants day also provides a feast for larger animals like birds. When birds eat many ants, the acid in their stomachs can stupefy them, making them appear drunk. No permanent damage is done, though they may have a hangover the next day! So, when the weather is right, the air seems to be full of flying ants and you find yourself ducking and diving, trying not to get them in your mouth or hair, don’t reach for the fly swat, just sit back, watch what is going on, think about how amazing it is that all of these ants manage to co-ordinate their lives in such a spectacular fashion, and marvel at this wonder of nature on your doorstep.

Happy hair days

Visit our website f TREAT NOW, PAY & VIP MEMBERSH

I started my own salon as it has always been a goal of mine

to become a great stylist and create an awesome salon experience for all my clients. I really enjoy working with hair, and I especially enjoy colouring - the challenge of creating a masterpiece that someone is going to love and be proud of - everyone wants to feel their best and that is what I love the most, creating happy hair days!

I think it’s important to recognise that every salon works hard and each hair stylist has their own creative flows. I have solely tried to focus on my own strengths and implement these into my salon, and recreate the kind of salon I would like to visit and get my hair done in. Therefore, I have tried to create a higher end, full experience salon, where hopefully clients feel as though they’ve escaped for a few hours from daily life, and have entered into Steadman & Co to relax, feel refreshed, pampered and rejuvenated! We offer a variety of hair and beauty services, where a client can feel as though they’ve had the full works, I chose the colour scheme of the shop to help create a luxury, quality atmosphere, and the final touches to the salon were thought through and attention to detail was given even to the smallest things! We worked with a company Pallet Project (based on the south coast), to create all our styling stations, reception desk and more from recycled pallets, and then upcycled them into quality salon furniture!

We’ve all learnt to appreciate barbers and hairdressers! And the barbers and hairdressers have all missed you! I think lockdown has been a complete mixture of good and bad! Good for people to actively take a step back, re-evaluate everything they have around them, and the slower pace has allowed everyone the chance to recharge their batteries! It especially did mine! But at the same time, it was pretty tough to be socially distant from loved ones and friends, and not be able to do the little things we all cherish, picnics, BBQs, dinners, and then all our beauty treatments! Hair, nails, facials, for guys getting a fresh cut and beard trim! We’ve all learnt to appreciate barbers and hairdressers! And the barbers and hairdressers have all missed you! We’ve managed to rebook 600 clients from March-June, and are working super hard to get everyone back to feeling STEADMANANDCO.COM hair happy! What happens to your body when you’re sleep deprived? Racking up sleep debt can really harm your health in the long run. If you're not getting enough sleep on a regular basis, those late-night binge sessions can not only cause a total lack of focus the next day, but also raise your risk of chronic illness, stress-related problems and weight gain. There is no official amount of time you need to snooze in order to avoid sleep deprivation. The amount of sleep you need depends on who you are. Each one of us has their own unique biological sleep requirements. In most adults, it is between 7-8 hours. Some people need just 6 hours or less. Some people need 8 hours or more. Getting the right amount of sleep has a very real pay-off. Sleep is necessary to promote three general things: alertness, performance, and general health. When you disrupt either the time or the quality of the sleep, you end up with significant detriments in each of those areas.

The ideal room for sleep is cool and dark. Most experts agree that the sweet spot for temperature is between 16-18oC and the darker the room, the better. Most people use shades, curtains, or blinds to block out unwanted light, or you can keep it simple and wear an eye mask. C Keep regular sleep hours Going to bed and getting up at roughly the same time every day will programme your body to sleep better. Choose a time when you're likely to feel tired and sleepy. D Do not over-indulge Too much food or alcohol, especially late at night, can interrupt your sleep patterns. Alcohol may help you to fall asleep initially, but it will disrupt your sleep later in the night. E Try a CBD supplement CBD is commonly used to address anxiety, and for people who suffer through the misery of insomnia, studies suggest that CBD may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep. hapihemp has a great range of holistic CBD products. The Tranquil CBD Tea has been created by a nutritionist bespoke for hapihemp. Not only does it contain CBD it also has chamomile, valerian, rosehip etc – it really is a CBD tea with a difference! hapi running . . naturally! More runners are turning to natural alternatives for relief and recovery… Serious runners and regular joggers often experience runner's knee, sports injuries and muscle soreness and are always looking for the best way to maintain a healthy body without using a cabinet full of painkillers that often just masks the issue short-term with other side effects. For a growing number of runners CBD is a natural alternative to ibuprofen, naproxen, and a range of painkillers, while for others it is a sleep aid or recovery supplement.

How does it work?

 Faster recovery, by helping to reduce the inflammation that occurs when we fatigue our muscles, helping repair and allowing them to get back to running harder, faster.  Providing a natural alternative pain relief to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) which carry risks when used during endurance exercise.  Helps improve sleep.

Cannabinoids already exist in our body, as part of our natural endocannabinoid system; a complex control centre that maintains many of the major physiological processes in the body, including appetite, sleep, metabolism, stress, pain, and immune function. CBD basically acts as a booster to your body’s endocannabinoid system. If. for example. you are in training, you are likely to be putting your body under increased stress, raising inflammation levels, more than your endocannabinoid system can cope with. Topping up your cannabinoids gives it some power in maintaining balance, the so-called homeostasis that is central to good recovery and all-round health.

What are the benefits of CBD for runners?

Which product to choose Once you have realised the potential for incorporating CBD into your daily routine you then have to choose how to take it. With so many products available online and in well-known stores you may want to try out a couple to see what works for you.

Many runners find that using a CBD massage oil really helps their legs, preand post-run. hapihemp massage oil contains a high-strength CBD as well as clove, black pepper, and clary sage, all of which are effective for relief.

There is a new hapihemp CBD superfood powder which also contains super powerful adaptogens helping the body resist stressors of all kinds, whether physical, chemical or biological.

For more information check out their website – www.hapihemp.co.uk They also have a great Facebook group where you can ask questions – Hapi Hemp CBD users.

younggazette Hampton Girlguiding go on Safari! This term has been brilliant! We have been meeting over Zoom and lots of the girls have been doing activities at home in between their school work, and it has helped keep some kid of normality in the girls lives and the adults too! As a district we have managed to award a whopping 25 interest badges, where girls have worked on project independently, 18 theme awards where we topped up activities we had completed in the units to complete unit badges, two bronze awards and 2 silver awards where girls worked really hard to combine interested badges and theme awards and other unit meeting activities to earn themselves the very coveted bronze and silver awards. Each week we have chosen different activities from the usual Girlguiding activities and adapted them to work from home, we have made kites to fly with our families, baked cakes together over Zoom, had

The Ark

scavenger hunts around the house and so much more! We even had visitors join us from Rutland Osprey centre to teach us about the birds, and many girls have since been to visit Rutland with their families to see if they can spot them. Over the summer holidays the units in Hampton have put together a Safari trail for the children (and grown-ups) of Hampton to enjoy. 35 houses across Hampton volunteered to help and they each decorated a window or two for the trail. We have loved the variety of animals chosen from rabbits, cats and fish to chickens, kangaroos and scarlet macaws! As face-to-face Girlguiding hasn’t been occurring

since the beginning of lockdown, we decided to use this as a fundraiser to help us to make sure the unit can keep running once we can return to ‘normal’. The Safari has been a great way to fundraise with local businesses getting involved and we have sold over 30 maps sets for families to enjoy a walk around Hampton. We are looking forward to whatever the next term brings to us and hopefully we can return to face-toface Girlguiding soon, but in the meantime we are having fun adapting our usual program to work from home and get everyone's families involved too.

It’s September! How great to be writing in the Hampton Gazette again To say that The Ark Team has missed the many families we usually meet with week by week is a massive understatement. How we have missed not singing with you, chatting with you, laughing with you, sharing a cup of tea and some toast together and so the list goes on. Our last session in March seems such a long time ago and life has changed in so many ways since then. We hope that you have all stayed safe and well over the last few months. We know that some of The Ark families were expecting a new

arrival during lockdown, so we hope that all new sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, granddaughters and grandsons have arrived safely. Although we have not been able to meet, it has been good to keep in touch through The Ark and CSK Facebook pages. It has been great to connect through Facebook Live Prayer on Tuesday evenings and through the CSK YouTube channel with our Sunday Worship, Children and Families slots and Youth having all moved online.

These are still available to watch, so if you are looking for a little craft activity to do one afternoon, check it out. At present, The Ark Team is unable to say when The Ark might return and we know that we are not alone in this unchartered territory. So, keep connecting with us online, look out for updates but most of all stay safe and keep well.

Girls’ Rugby Rugby might be seen as a sport for 'real men' but times have changed, says Peterborough Rugby Club’s Simon Potter, the founder and manager of their Girls’ Section The club has launched a recruitment drive ahead of the new season and is looking for sporty girls aged 9 to 17.

finalists in the ‘Junior Team of the Year’ section of last year’s National Rugby Awards. There are also under-11 and under-18 teams.

“The girls’ section has only been going for five years,” said Potter, “and we’ve built up one of the leading girls’ rugby sections in the country.”

“We started with the youngest age groups, so the under-18s are still a ‘work in progress’, but we have very high hopes for them this season,” added Potter.

Three years ago, the under-13s were unbeaten all season in more than 50 games and last season there was only one other club that the under-13s failed to beat. The under-15s have been National Cup quarter finalists two years running and were

The club also has 10 boys’ teams – at every age from under-7 to under-16 – all of which always welcome newcomers. Potential new recruits should contact spotter@prufc.com to arrange a free trial session.

Child Arrangements in the time of Covid

Money Matters

Dominic Cummings’ now infamous road trip to Durham saw the nation wrangle with the rights and wrongs of how parents should manage childcare during the coronavirus pandemic. Many separated families have struggled with child arrangements since lockdown. In March, the president of the Family Division Sir Andrew McFarlane issued guidance on the social distancing rules for contact arrangements for separated families as they applied during the strictest phase of the lockdown. The guidance states unequivocally “where parents do not live in the same household, children under 18 can be moved between their parents’ homes”. While this guidance established a clear exception to the government’s “stay at home” requirement, that did not mean that children have to be moved between parental homes. Even in the context of today’s more relaxed rules, the decision as to whether a child should move between households is ultimately the child’s parents to take. In practice, this means that parents should generally be advised to continue to comply with a court order, if you have one, or your agreed routine, provided no one in either household shows signs of having Covid-19 or if they do, doesn’t pose any unnecessary risk for a vulnerable person. As Sir Andrew’s guidance emphasised, parental responsibility lies with the parents of the children, not with the court. In practice, this means that where the normal arrangements are disrupted, parents should be advised to discuss matters constructively with the aim of agreeing a solution that works for everyone. This does not mean taking advantage of a spurious Covid reason to interrupt contact, as ultimately it is the child who suffers from being prevented from spending time with the separated parent. If there are genuine reasons for coronavirus restrictions, which also may cause the letter of a court order to be varied, the parents should keep to the spirit of the order by making safer alternative arrangements for the child. This might have to be, on a temporary basis, regular video calls instead of meeting in person.

If you have questions about what the arrangements should be for your children in the current climate, consult a family law specialist who will be able to advise you.

Working from home due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) If your employer requires you to work at home, you can – and have always been able to – claim for increased costs due to working from home, e.g., heating and electricity Clearly, right now many firms have closed workplaces and that means across the UK millions of staff are temporarily required to work from home, and therefore are eligible to claim for increased costs. HMRC says it will consider claims from employees working at home due to coronavirus measures if their usual workplace is closed. Yet apportioning these costs can be difficult. So instead you can use a simple rate and claim £6 per week. You can claim more if your costs are higher, but it is a more labour intensive process. There are two ways to do this: Employers can pay you £6 per week extra tax-free. Employers can give you an allowance up to this amount and what they give you is free from tax, so you receive it all (to give you more, it will need to make special arrangements). But right now with many firms struggling, asking may be bad timing, so instead you can claim tax relief on £6/week (worth £1.20/week at 20% tax, £2.40/week at higher rate). If your employer won't pay expenses for your extra costs due to necessary working from home, but you have them, you can then ask for the amount to be deducted from your taxable income. To make the process easy, HMRC says that claims in line with the employers' payment (i.e., for £6/week) will not need to justify that figure – meaning you won't need to keep receipts or prove information. The impact of a £6/week claim is the tax savings, that's a gain of £1.20/week (about £62/year) for basic 20% rate taxpayers, and £2.40/week (about £124/ year) for higher 40% rate taxpayers. If you believe you have higher increased costs then you can claim more, but you will need evidence of the cost increases. How to claim the tax relief If you normally do a self-assessment tax return, you can claim on that. Yet for most people, this will simply require filling in a P87 form. If you claim by sending this form by post, you'll need to add a 'Using your home as an office' expense manually in the 'Other expenses' section. You can claim retrospectively on expenses incurred. So, if you're only at home due to coronavirus, it's best to wait until you're back at work (or a few months anyway) then make the whole claim at once. Your tax code will likely be adjusted so you pay less tax over the year, as opposed to you getting a direct tax refund. If you had to buy home office equipment to work from home and your employer is paying you back – normally this would be a ‘benefit-in-kind’, which means you’d need to pay tax and national insurance on it. But specifically for those working from home because of coronavirus, for this tax year ending 5 April 2021 your employer can pay you in full, with no tax.

staysafe The Smartphone App Which Makes Stolen Tools Too Hot To Handle DID you know that tool theft costs tradespeople £100 million a year? Not only this – but it ruins livelihood and causes financial heartache for many self-employed people However, while this kind of crime is on the increase, technology is fast catching up with the thieves; and there is a now a new smartphone app available which makes stolen tools too hot to handle. A company in South Oxfordshire is making it tough for thieves to swipe and sell on valuable tools, and Cambridgeshire Constabulary is among a number of police forces in the UK to support the scheme - which empowers tradesmen to securely register their tools and also identify stolen ones. The easy to use app allows tradespeople to record pictures and details of their tools and receipts on a secure cloud server which holds the “ISO27001” certificate.

This list of tools can be downloaded as a PDF and sent to the police and insurance companies. Users can quickly report tools as stolen or lost from the app, which then sends an instant alert to all other local registered users, warning them a theft has just happened. After tools are reported stolen, they appear on “Dodgy Gear”, a search engine for stolen goods which can be freely accessed by any member of the public or police. Before purchasing an item (online or at a market) you can very simply check on dodgy gear to make sure the item you are about to buy is not listed as stolen. You can search for the tool by serial number, model number, brand, tool type and description.
