Registration now open for Thorpe Hall’s Starlight Hike It’s time to dust off your trainers, grab a friend and get registered for this year’s Thorpe Hall Hospice Starlight Hike.

A

fter a year’s break, the popular fundraising event is back in the calendar, on Saturday, August 8, with a new look, a new route and a lots of new reasons to get involved. For those looking for a challenge there’s a 10km route taking in some of Peterborough’s prettiest parkland. For those keen to take the more leisurely option, or maybe looking for a family challenge, there’s a 5km circuit available. Both routes will start and finish at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Longthorpe, Peterborough, with the start scheduled for early evening so walkers return for their triumphant finish down Thorpe Hall’s stunning drive as the sun sets. There will be a warm-up to get those feet moving before the starting pistol is fired, and

entertainment along the marshalled route to keep the motivation levels high. There’ll be a barbecue in the beautiful gardens of Thorpe Hall Hospice and activities to keep the supporters busy while the walkers are on route. All the money raised at this year’s Starlight Hike will help pay for the services in the new Thorpe Hall Hospice, which will welcome patients from the start of July. Thorpe Hall’s senior event fundraiser Jo Killick said: “We’re thrilled to have the Starlight Hike back on our events calendar and delighted that, this year, we will be able to start and finish at Thorpe Hall. Walking down the drive as the sun sets, to be welcomed by staff and patients will, we’re sure, make it a really memorable occasion.”

The event is open to all ages including children. It costs just £15 to enter with all entrants receiving a must-have Starlight Hike t-shirt to wear during the event. Walkers are asked to raise £100 through sponsorship. To find out more about this year’s Starlight Hike visit www.sueryder.org/ starlighthike/thorpehall or call the fundraising team on 01733 225993.

e all know the Hamptons are full of families and it’s through celebrations such as Father’s Day that we can really appreciate them. I am very lucky that most of my family live very close by so I get to see them daily. The world is now full of social media, in most cases it’s a wonderful tool for our family members who are not so close. We get to keep in contact, share photos and chat at just the click of a button. The Hamptons are the perfect place for these snaps. We recently visited Angel Pond, as we kept quiet the swans approached us, but we had to remember not startle them. Once they had checked us out they went on their way. Unfortunately, as we walked around the pond we noticed it was slightly polluted. This is the case with most of the lakes in the Hamptons, which is something only we are responsible for. It would be very helpful if we made sure our litter was put in the bins so it doesn’t pollute the lakes and ponds further. We also made a pitstop at the village green, and as we hung our heads over the wooden barrier we saw our very first fish – and not a small one either! He swam out of sight when the adorable baby Coots joined us. This month spend some precious time with your family. Leave your gadgets at home, pack a picnic and take a trip to the park. Or what about a kick around on the playing fields or a race to the top of the tump? Head out and enjoy the sights and wildlife of the Hamptons. Whatever you do, have some quality family time!

Hampton Nature Reserve (HNR) is a huge wild space nestled between the Hamptons and Orton Goldhay.

T

he site’s rugged terrain and 300+ ponds are reminders of its industrial heritage as a clay pit. However, this uniquely man-made landscape has proven to be perfect for wildlife, chiefly the great crested newt, playing home to the largest population in the world. Froglife and a team of volunteers manage HNR on behalf of the landowners, O&H. Teams

go out every Thursday and two Saturdays per month to cut back the encroaching scrub to then burn on bonfires (which are also great for baking potatoes and roasting marshmallows!). Although the volunteer teams were set up to manage the site they quickly evolved into a social event with members dropping in whenever they can and often becoming regulars.

Top five REVEALED

email scams

by Eileen Le Voi

Nine out of 10 emails sent worldwide can be regarded as spam; undoubtedly a large proportion of that spam will be scams trying to get your hard earned money. A recent survey has revealed the top five email scams to be aware of this year.

1 Bank scam emails A few pieces of key information may be all the scammers need to get into your account. Emails often say there’s a problem with your account, and ask you to update your account details, either by email or by clicking on a link. Never click on a link in an email. Call your bank or go directly to your bank’s official website.

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT & LETTINGS

07749 115968 info@agtpml.co.uk

www.agtpml.co.uk

2 PayPal scam emails PayPal emails are definitely on the increase. A legitimate email from PayPal won’t ask you for sensitive information such as your password, bank account or credit card details, nor will it have attachments or ask you to download/install any software. Approved football training for kids aged 18 months to 7 years

3 Tax rebate scam The HMRC was notified of almost 75,000 scam emails between April and September 2014, and they were only the ones that were reported! Promising a tax rebate, such emails often ask for key information including account numbers and passwords to make the payment. HMRC never asks for bank details via email.

4 Scam emails purporting to be from HM Revenue & Customs Other HMRC scam emails can take several forms – a mistake on a self-assessment form, or that a tax notice has been issued. You may be asked to verify your identity by providing a copy of your passport. Never respond to these emails or provide a copy of your ID. For queries, contact HMRC directly for advice.

Where learning’s a ball

5 Scam emails seeking money for services or help Emails asking for money for services or help continue to be prevalent. Scammers are constantly refining this technique, which will often prey upon the most vulnerable with desperate pleas for aid or offers of low investment and high return. Unsolicited contact, promising a return too good to be true – will be exactly that. To report any type of fraud, please visit www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud or telephone 0300 123 2040

COMMUNITY NEWS

Tucked away under the railway arches in the centre of Peterborough is Railworld. This is probably quite well known in the area but what may not be known is that on land adjacent to Railworld, and part of the same charity, is a hidden gem ...

Railworld’s hidden Wildlife Haven

W

hat appears to be a wild natural area is actually one that has been carefully planned as part of a habitat creation programme for our native wildlife. A maze of paths and bridges (restored aqueducts) lead you through plants, shrubs and trees of great variety, past ponds and waterfalls. When I visited, the haven was full of brightly coloured flowers and insects. Seats at various view

points encourage the visitor to stop and enjoy the views and the wildlife. One seating area overlooks the River Nene where passing wildfowl and narrowboats can be seen. The wildlife haven you see today has taken many years of hard work. In 1995, Brian Pearce gained inspiration from the wildlife havens that his employer, Perkins Engines (now part of Caterpillar), had created on their Eastfield site.

The Wildlife Haven is not only a habitat creation programme, they also aim to ‘Entertain and Educate’ about the environment that we all share. The Wildlife Trust holds many special days throughout the year, our volunteers promise you an intriguing, exciting place to explore and learn about nature. “ Brian Pearce In 2009, after nearly 45 years, Brian, chose early retirement to volunteer full time on the project. The team of volunteers (many of them Brian’s old workmates from Perkins!) still have many ideas for future development. This habitat creation (a home for nature) was only made possible when the old Peterborough Power Station Coal Yard became available and was purchased by the late Rev Richard Paten; he applauded and supported Peterborough’s vision to be the UK’s Environment Capital. Brian and Richard shared many dreams for Railworld, but they also had a passion for conservation and for sharing the wonders of nature with the children and people of Peterborough. Brian told the Gazette: “We should all learn to love nature; we want our children in particular to appreciate the wonders of our natural world.”

Interpretation boards around the site give a fascinating explanation and record the development of the haven. Complex engineering problems had to be overcome, mostly connected to reusing the three historic cast iron aqueducts built in 1840. All of these have been carefully blended into the landscape, providing pathways through the site. Most of the hard landscaping has been created from recycling such items as paving slabs and wooden crates. Over the years thousands of people from local schools, businesses and the wider community have created this oasis of wildlife in this hidden corner of Peterborough. Last year alone, volunteers contributed over 12,000 hours! For people interested in railways there is of course much

to see at Railworld, situated right next to Peterborough’s Nene Valley Station. Enjoy the Garden Railway, a massive OO gauge model railway, and various railway memorabilia. The proximity to Peterborough’s main line station also offers a unique opportunity; from the viewing platform you can watch modern trains passing by, some at over 100mph! Why not take the children and a picnic to this ‘secret garden’, tap into the natural world and learn something of Peterborough’s railway history? Drinks, ice creams and snacks are available to buy.

They are all so welcoming and very accepting. So if you find you are in need of some straightforward, fun loving, giggly, girly company please come and see us. In May, Donna McKean, from Riverside Beads, taught us how to make Shambala bracelets. We never realised just how easy it was and it is yet another crafty idea that we are all itching to have a further go at. June found us working with paper again, particularly having a go at paperback book folding and making ornamental birdhouses. Whilst it was repetitive, we found it relaxing too, so we could do it and have a good old catch up with each other at the same time. We hope to see you sometime soon!

Nature’s hum

‘Now summer is in flower and nature’s hum is never silent round her sultry bloom’ begins the poem by John Clare, the nineteenth century poet from nearby Helpston. Mid-year, summer is in full force during June, with mid-summer being officially on the 21st of the month.

T

he countryside is lush and the hedgerows, grasslands and woodlands around Hampton are bursting with growth. Trees are now fully in leaf. Most have started to lose their spring freshness by the end of May, with the bright green exchanged for a darker shade. The Hawthorn blossom starts to fade, with the creamy fragment flowers of elder taking its place. The birds are singing less now as the breeding season is in full

swing and their main aim is to find enough food to feed their young. They are busy finding food for their growing broods, which will be mainly from the abundant supply of insects, which are at their most plentiful at this time of year. Plentiful food is essential because a young bird’s weight needs to increase by as much as 10 times from the moment it hatches to the point that it leaves the nest. The abundance of insects can be annoying at this time of year, for

example, the ubiquitous mosquito, but at the same time fascinating. June and July are the best months to get to know moths, dragonflies, grasshoppers, beetles and all our other amazing minibeasts. They are often seen as the less attractive side of our wildlife but they come in such colour, shapes and sizes that there is much there to take notice of. Without insects, our world would be deep in animal waste, plants would not be pollinated and therefore not

able to produce much of the fruit and vegetables we eat. Apparently 80% of the world’s known species are insects and the UK has about 23,500 different types, with 2,000 of these likely to be seen in a typical UK garden!

The dandelions and buttercups gild all the lawn: the drowsy bee stumbles among the clover tops, and summer sweetens all to me. James Russell Lowell

VE 70 Events

HURRY!

Many thanks to all residents who contributed to, and attended, the Hampton Parish Council’s VE 70 events. A tea party held at Christ The Servant King Church on 4 May was a sell-out and greatly enjoyed by the young and not so young. Full afternoon teas were served by members of the Hampton Seniors’ Club, suitably attired in Land Girl outfits!

O

n Friday 8 May, a disco/ dance was held in Hampton Community Centre. Food was on order from Churchill’s (thanks lads !) and a raffle took place with excellent prizes. Most of us dressed in period outfits and had enormous fun! Everyone retreated home with a free commemorative mug supplied by David Wait, manager of Serpentine Green. The following day saw many local children and parents attending a free Fun Day at Hampton Vale Community Centre. Sandwiches and drinks were supplied alongside many activities, including face-painting and a bouncy castle.

On a very sunny Sunday 10 May, a number of residents and local youth organisations paraded from Christ the Servant King church to the Memorial Garden for a short service of Remembrance. After the laying of three poppy wreathes, an amazing flypast took place, at precisely 13.23hrs, by two Hawker Hurricane planes. Circling over the lake three times, there was much cheering and flag-waving by everyone! Hampton Parish Council also initiated an art competition to reflect VE Day and the winners (listed on the next page) will be presented with their prizes at their respective schools by Mrs. Marion

Sharp, chairwoman of the Parish Council. Primary aged school pupils also received a magnetic dry-wipe board and pen, shown in the picture above, from the Parish Council, as a keepsake to commemorate VE Day. For me, it was the culmination of almost a year’s planning by the Parish Council’s Sub-Committee. Although it would have been even more heart-warming to see an increased number of residents join in with some of the planned events, as one resident said: “I have been waiting 16 years for this … we are now a true community”. And that’s made it all worthwhile !

Christ the Servant King Hampton Children’s Competition 2015

The Parish Church of Hampton

T

O

n the first Sunday of July in 2014 the doors of CSK Church building opened for our first service. We celebrate all that has happened during our first year. It says in the Bible, in the book of Isaiah 43: ‘See I am doing a new thing’. New things have happened, and we look forward to more new things happening very soon. Successful campaign for the year 7 boys’ football team 12 boys were selected to represent Hampton College. The boys kicked o the New Year with a bang, playing a range of schools.

W

ith only a single loss, one draw and eight wins in the league they finished third overall. A respectable finish for their first season together. With the league over, the boys were to compete in the league plate competition. Drawn against Voyager School in the semifinal, Hampton recorded a 9-0 win to see them through to the final against St John Fisher. After a heavy defeat in the league, SJF conceded the win to Hampton meaning the boys finished the season on a high as League Plate winners without actually playing the final. An excellent season with fantastic commitment and team work from all of the boys involved. Miss Bowd (Teacher of PE)

SCHOOLS

Hampton Vale Primary school Sports Day at Hampton Vale Primary School saw hundreds of parents and carers turn out to cheer on the young athletes as they competed in a range of team activities and sprint races.

T

he day began with team challenges, such as a mini obstacle race and an egg-andspoon race, and running heats for Key Stage One children; they were followed by the running finals, for which the Key Stage Two children cheered them on. After a picnic lunch on the field, the Key Stage Two team activities and running heats were held. Drawing on the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony for inspiration, all the children then paraded around the field behind their house captains who were bearing the house flags. From there, the Key Stage Two finals were held. Children earned points through the day during both their team activities and the sprint races. Children in Aragon house were the event winners. Aside from Sports Day, a group of Year Four children took part in an inter-schools minitennis tournament and seven Year Six boys took part in an inter-schools football tournament, finishing runners-up. Both the Best Player Award and the Golden Boot Award went to Jack Turner; Ali Mustafa won the best goalkeeper award. Year One children also competed in an inter-schools sports festival held at Hampton

College. A busy few weeks has also included several educational visits, including:  the Year Six week-long residential visit to Kingswood Activity Centre on the Norfolk coast;  the Year Three visit to Peterborough Museum and the village of Castor, in which they discovered more about the impact of the Romans on our area;  the Year Two trip to Hunstanton, held as part of their Coastal Adventures theme. The Year Three visit followed a Meet the Romans event in school for parents, in which they joined the children to experience some of the aspects of Roman life, including making

mosaics, investigating some of the treatments available at the bath-house and researching some of the famous buildings of the ancient city. Music and drama events continue to be an important feature of school life. The Year Five classes’ work over the year in learning to play the trumpet or baritone culminated in performances to parents and carers and to some other year groups. Year Six children have also been busy rehearsing their production of Aladdin. Fathers’ Day was marked by the children in the reception classes with a special event for dads and special people.

SCHOOLS

Hargate Primary We can’t believe another busy school year has nearly ended and we’ve still got a few more events to squeeze in before the end of term such as our annual Year Six Residential, our languages week and Parents’ Open Afternoon.

O

ur biggest news this term follows our Ofsted visit at the end of May. We had a very intense and rigorous two days of inspection and we are delighted to announce that we are classed as Outstanding (Grade 1) in all areas. This is a tremendous achievement and one which has taken time, a huge amount of hard work, determination and enthusiasm from all of the staff in the school, the governors, pupils and parents. In sports news, well done to our swimming team who were winners at a recent swimming gala. The team were in the top three swimmers in every race and were presented with a trophy and a cup for our cabinet. Well done also to our football team who got through to the semi-finals in their competition and to our netball team who came second in the Year 5 & 6 netball finals. Our recent science week was a great success. The week was packed full of interesting activities:

Year Four had a wonderful time enjoying exciting experiments with Mrs Pink, whilst Year Two enjoyed a visit to our Forest School and had fun with Miss Porter. Professor Brainstorm visited all the classes and wowed the children with his amazing experiments whilst the Wildlife Science Company brought a wonderful selection of animals in for the children to see, handle and learn about. Our music celebration evening took place on Thursday 4 June at school. The evening was a great success and provided an excellent opportunity for our children who learn instruments and attend the choir to showcase their abilities. And finally, the children have once again been working hard on their films for the Peterborough Film Awards 2015. We are looking forward to see if all of our hard work has paid off on 9 July. More information to follow in next month’s edition.

Last year Hampton College raised £872.97 – our record to date! Years 7 and 8 participated in the event – total tbc. It is always a great event which is designed to get students not only raising money for charity, but to also encourage them to read for pleasure. The Royal Horticultural Society (Allotment) Group have held a Cakes in the Courtyard fundraising event. On the sports side, the football season reached its climax. The Year 7, 10 and 11 boys went on to win the plate competition for Peterborough Schools, having been beaten in the first round. The great success was once again the Year 8s – they beat Jack Hunt School 4-1 to retain their title from last year.

etting the neutering message across is a tough hurdle for cat welfare and the vast majority of people are not neutering their cats early enough to avoid unwanted cats and kittens. Cats can start breeding from as young as four months of age. Without neutering, the UK’s cat population quickly gets out of control and each summer as a charity we are overwhelmed with kittens in need of homes. Last year we saw the numbers of abandoned pregnant stray cats soar, and unwanted kittens were at an alltime high. 80 per cent of these were under a year old, a gym slip mum, little more than kittens themselves.

Cats are prolific breeders, one unneutered female can produce 18 kittens a year and can be responsible for 20,000 descendants in just five years. So, it’s easy to see how the problem can escalate. In 2014 the branch neutered in excess of 800 cats and this year the calls reporting pregnant strays came much sooner than we had anticipated. A heavily pregnant stray came into our branch on 19 January and the first litter of 2015 were born days later. And the calls have not stopped since. As a charity we recognise the need to both educate and help Peterborough cat owners who for whatever reason have not had their cat neutered.

What do you do if you think your rabbit has heat stroke? Rabbits don’t actually pant to keep cool, so if you see your rabbit with his mouth open and breathing quickly they may have heat stroke. Do not submerge them in cold water, as this could place the rabbit in shock. Dampen his ears and body with cool water, then get them to the vet straight away.

HAMPTON RESIDENTS’ SURVEY

Residents vote for being happy in Hampton In a recent survey by O&H Hampton, the management company for the Hampton area, four out of five residents said they would recommend Hampton to others looking for a place to live. Hampton was also highly-rated for safety, community spirit and its open spaces. The largely positive survey, which is exclusively presented here, also found that the biggest bugbear for residents was the congestion on the roads, with a majority of respondents calling for road improvements and better parking across the area.

In my opinion, Hampton is a well-kept secret – only 45 minutes from London Kings Cross.

What do you value about living in Hampton? By far the most often mentioned aspect that people love about living in Hampton are the lakes, parks and open spaces. The community spirit and friendliness of the place, and the convenience of having good shops and facilities so nearby, tie for second place in the list of what people value. We’ve included a few comments from the hundreds we received.

Hampton looks amazing in all seasons.

We have seen Hampton grow since moving in in 2012 and can only say we love it more each year. If we were to move anywhere else, it would be to the Hampton East development as we have seen the proposals and suggestions for development and they look very exciting.

It is a lovely place to live in. I have never lived anywhere else where they have such a strong community spirit.

I moved here as a non-driving single mum and loved what was readily available on my doorstep. Years later, there’s even more available and it’s a great area for my kids to grow up in.

HAMPTON RESIDENTS’ SURVEY

What would make living in Hampton better?

What people say Unfortunately you cannot enjoy the open spaces due to inconsiderate people not cleaning up after their dogs

The most important points that people wish they could change about Hampton are the issues around parking controls, traffic congestion, speeding and access into and out of Hargate and Vale. This information will be passed to the local planning authority for their future reference. Litter and dog mess also figure high on the list of concerns. By far the most requested new facilities in the Hamptons are a café with a bakery, butcher’s shop and another pub. Again, we’ve included a few from your many comments and suggestions below . . .

Would love to have a coffee shop, café or bakery and butchers to make Hampton feel that bit more homely A huge issue is cars parked all over Hampton on narrow streets, which makes for all sorts of problems Need more facilities other than takeaways and estate agents. Need more things to do, even a water park for the kids in the summer More public information – I don’t have time to go looking Too many houses and not enough facilities. One dentist, one doctors’ surgery, one pub, one vet – just not enough

his is not to be judgmental about whether to marry or not to marry, but rather to flag up how sensible it would be if you are in a cohabiting relationship, to draw up an agreed document which records what would happen if you were ever to go your separate ways. When there is a serious dispute between cohabitees, there was available the last resort of making an application for the Court to declare their beneficial interest in a property they don’t own but have made a substantial contribution towards. Or it could be that the property is in joint names, but does not accurately reflect one party’s greater contribution than the other’s, which they want to be compensated for when they leave. From this April the Court fees for such applications have increased 50 times to £10,000 per application. This effectively means that unless you are dealing with a very large money case, hundreds of thousands of pounds instead of the usual tens of thousands involved in a typical cohabitee dispute, you are blocked out of seeking any legal remedy. Very few solicitors would recommend gambling as much as £10,000 to see if you would win. The options of cohabitees are therefore even more limited. It is not cynical or cold hearted to plan for the future when you are living together. It is just sensible housekeeping to draw up a cohabitation agreement that would be insurance against the future if the need arises.

FOOD & DRINK

Spice up your barbecue this summer When it comes to unshakable optimism concerning our summer weather, we Brits are undisputed champions of the world! Our misguided belief that we’ll be blessed with wall-to-wall sunshine is encouraged by garden centres throughout the land. Even before the daffodils are out, they’re tempting us with lavish displays of patio furniture complemented by a vast array of barbecues, from tin-foil disposables to state-of-the-art jobs that look as though they require a pilot’s licence.

N

onetheless, it has to be said that at the merest hint of some decent weather, the majority of us love nothing more than ‘slinging a shrimp on the barbie’. But if it does rain on your parade, you can always opt for a super-hot grill or griddle pan. One of the secrets to tasty, succulent barbecue fare is a good marinade. Mix the ingredients together in a screw-topped jar and shake well. Place the meat or fish in a bowl, pour over the marinade and ensure everything is thoroughly coated. Cover with cling film and marinate for at least an hour in the fridge (or better still overnight) to allow the flavours to permeate.

Chargrilled food needs really good, punchy seasoning, so the following recipes incorporate plenty of herbs and spices. The first is our family favourite – a versatile barbecue marinade that can be used for pretty much anything and everything.

Versatile Barbecue Marinade

Piri Piri

3 tbsp of sunflower oil 3 tbsp white wine vinegar 2 tbsp soy sauce or gluten-free Tamari 1 tbsp Chinese five-spice powder 2 tbsp tomato ketchup 1 tbsp honey 3-5 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp ginger paste

5-10 Bird’s Eye or other red chillies, chopped 100ml olive oil 50ml red wine vinegar 3-5 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp tomato puree 1 tbsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp dried thyme or oregano (or 3 tbsp fresh) Plenty of freshly milled salt & pepper

With Chinese five-spice powder and soy sauce in the mix, spare ribs are the obvious candidates, but mushrooms also taste amazing prepared this way. Toss whole mushrooms and chunks of red and yellow pepper in the marinade, then skewer; for vegetarian guests, use Quorn fillets or Haloumi cheese too. If there are any leftovers (doubtful) they taste great eaten cold the next day. Next up is that Portuguese classic, Piri Piri sauce. Piri Piri is another name for the fiery African bird’s-eye chilli which gives the dish its name; you can adjust the amount of chillies according to taste (or use a milder variety), but the spicy heat really brings out the best in char-grilled chicken thighs . . . think Nando’s!

Facebook “f ” Logo

Gently fry the chopped chillies and garlic in a little of the oil. Add the paprika and stir for 30 seconds. Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer for five minutes. Allow to cool, then use as described. The third marinade is ideal for more delicately flavoured food, such as fish, Quorn and tofu, but also chicken or lamb kebabs. Simply mix two parts of olive oil to one part of lemon juice and add salt, black pepper, plenty of crushed garlic and loads of chopped fresh herbs. Tarragon tastes great with fish and chicken, and thyme also adds fragrance without being overpowering. For lamb kebabs, rosemary with bay leaves and a few crushed juniper berries make the perfect choice.

Allotments available in Hampton Have you ever thought about growing your own fruit or vegetables? Do you want to be part of a newly established community? If so then an allotment may be just the thing to make it a happen.

A

llotments are a great hobby that can involve all the family. They’re cheap, you get healthy exercise without having to pay for a gym subscription or run around in circles, and you get to eat healthy fruit and vegetables without the concern of what has been added to them or the air miles involved.

First strawberry!

Who would have thought the first ripe strawberry or pulling those first early potatoes to accompany a Saturday BBQ would give you so much excitement!

The Hampton Vale Community Allotment Gardens, established in 2014, currently have a few remaining vacant plots, if you are interested in joining like minded people and live in Hampton Vale then email the hamptonparishclerk@ gmail.com to register your interest. Just think you could be planting vegetables now that will be ready just in time for your Christmas dinner!

Allotments

Hard work or relaxing? Sitting in my kitchen, cup of tea in hand, enjoying a silence only interrupted by delicate birdsong, I started musing about allotments, exactly what is the attraction? by Janet Anderson

A

llotment – what does this word mean to you? Freedom, boredom, hard work, traditional? Who do you feel an allotment provides for, both in satisfaction terms, as a hobby, and the actual produce grown? Who does an allotment cater for? The old, the young, the retired, the busy dad or mum? Or just anyone with an interest in growing and a few hours to spare each week? The joy is that anyone with a bit of time and vision can successfully run an allotment. Vegetables don’t magically appear, although we might think they do when we see them packaged up and on display in our local supermarkets. One well known (at least to Radio Two listeners) allotmenteer commented that some people think you can manage one in just half an hour a week. I’m not so sure about that though! What about the weeding, watering and all the other little jobs that contribute to a wealth of home grown crops. Commitment, stamina and time are great assets to have when considering taking on an allotment. Of course you may find there is a waiting list in your area but let’s suppose you’ve got the plot and are ready to go. What could be better than sitting in a deckchair on a balmy summer afternoon listening to the sound of pollinating bees, with a flask at your side and a favourite book? OK, this is the vision, but the reality may be listening to the ‘know it all’ from the adjacent plot, who has been there for years, and knows all the ins and outs of vegetable growing. He/she may well have lots of knowledge and tips, but sometimes you don’t want to be lectured or advised, as making your own mistakes often leads to a better understanding of how things work. You do need to know what’s allowed (a tidy plot and well tendered crops) and what’s not (sometimes bonfires, barbed wire and sub letting) and tips on how to get the best bean crop or what to do about slugs can prove invaluable. However, one of the great joys of an allotment is the chance to lose yourself in your own little world. Facebook “f ” Logo

An allotment can be a wonderful place to rediscover a sense of fulfilment, especially if modern day life presents you with many stresses. Mundane jobs such as watering make you slow down and are an excellent time for contemplation. Planning what you want to grow in the cold days of winter helps to remind us that better weather is just around the corner and that whatever happens the seasons continue to change and take us forward in a comforting and controlled way. Late spring and early summer are very busy times on the allotment. There are crops to be sown and nurtured, weeds to be removed, and bugs and other crop threatening creatures to be eradicated. Predominately though, it should be the time you reap the rewards of all your earlier hard work and planning. If you are new to allotments, try simple crops first, but do remember to sew ones you will harvest and enjoy. Lettuce and other salad crops, runner beans, peas and new potatoes are good choices. Many of us have found, no matter how hard you try, if you have children, they may not appreciate your efforts to grow spinach, kale, chillies and other delights perhaps more suited to the adult palate. Involve the kids in the growing though and they may be open to trying new things – it certainly worked for me with my very sweet small tomatoes. A little early research on what works on surrounding allotments, and how easy certain crops are to grow and maintain, can pay dividends on your own plot. No-one could really argue that an allotment doesn’t involve some hard work, but the benefits usually far outweigh this. However, I have to issue a final word of warning. One of the things I initially found slightly tiresome was the amount of washing the crops needed when you had picked them. Like many people I was used to buying pre-packed from the supermarket; vegetables that had been carefully sorted in the first place so no earwigs, slugs and other creatures were likely to drop out. However, the overwhelming difference in flavour soon made up for any little inconveniences and the sense of achievement was superb.

HOME & GARDEN

Vibrant pots make all the difference to a patio or doorstep, adding colour and interest for the entire summer. Create impact, and a big splash of colour, by grouping several pots together – this looks far more impressive than single containers dotted here and there. Fill pots with summer bedding plants such as Geraniums, Petunia and Busy Lizzies – plants that also develop and flower quickly.

There are many great tips and tricks to make your patio stand out as a place full of flowers. Making it a welcoming spot to relax in on those lovely summer days.

Think vertical

THE PERFECT PATIO The patio is one of the areas in the garden that stands out and gets used the most, so it’s worth putting in a little time and effort to make it as pretty and productive as possible.

34

summer garden

Colour hit

Disguise ugly walls and fences with clever plant solutions. Consider a ‘green wall’ approach, which uses year-round herbaceous plants for a continuous display, or cover the space with lots of hanging baskets filled with colourful summer bedding. Either will bring about a transformation.

Sitting comfortably Something to sit on is probably the most important part of a patio, so you need to get it just right. Decide whether you want a table and chairs for dining, or comfy sofas or loungers for relaxing, then consider the style. Wood is good for a traditional garden, glass and metalwork in a contemporary setting and weatherproof rattan is perfect for creating a premium look.

Your guide to

Living in Hampton

The Hamptons OUR VISION A chance to hear more about progress in the Hamptons East will top the agenda at a meeting for residents on Wednesday 15 July

T

he Hampton Update meeting revives the tradition of previous information sessions, giving local people the opportunity to hear about progress, plans and timetabling, from the landowners O&H. It will take place in the main hall of Hampton College and, as previous events have attracted a full house, the organisers are strongly recommending people get tickets in advance. Tickets are free and can be downloaded from the news section of the O&H Hampton website, www.ohhampton.co.uk. Said O&H Hampton general manager Roger Tallowin: “With the first housebuilders due to start on the Hamptons East site during the next year, we want to continue being good neighbours and give our local Hampton community first sight of our exciting plans for the next phase of growing the Hamptons. “These residents’ meetings have proved very popular in the past and are also, of course, a chance to bring everyone up-to-date on work that is underway or planned in and around the existing areas of Hampton.” He added: “We are also inviting a number of local organisations to have a stall and promote what they are up to and how local people can get involved. And the College will be taking the opportunity to say a little more about the academy that will be coming early in the development of Hamptons East.” Doors to the event open at 6pm, with presentations from 7-8pm and plenty of opportunities to ask questions. And for those of you who can’t wait – a taste of what’s coming …

The vision is to create a series of new villages as part of the next stage of ‘The Hamptons’ – a unique area offering a fantastic quality of life within an exceptional landscape and waterfront setting. A beautiful landscape, unrivalled opportunities for leisure and play, and a home for life: these goals are at the heart of our vision for the Hamptons’ next chapter. 2015 will see the vision begin to take shape as work starts on the first of four new villages to the east of the A15. Hampton Gardens, Hampton Woods, Hampton Beach, and Hampton Water will each have their own distinctive character, features and appeal. At the same time, each will be an integral part of an overall design that wraps country park around and through the development – as we’ve already done so successfully in Hampton Hargate and Hampton Vale. To the south of the villages, The Hamlets will feature a few small clusters of larger properties with potential for self-build.

Four new village communities We plan to make the most of the area’s existing lakes, woodlands and open spaces – which are already notable sites for wildlife and leisure. Through enhancing these natural features our four new villages will offer new and existing Hamptons’ residents: A host of new leisure opportunities such as sailing, swimming, walking and bird watching All the advantages of village life – personality, a vibrant community, accessible, high quality services, safety and a real sense of belonging, all within reach of Peterborough’s lively city centre

If you have an idea for a subject you’d like to see featured here let us know by email at info@hamptongazette.co.uk

HEALTH & BEAUTY Essential oils have been used for years for health and medicinal purposes, such as beauty, aromatherapy and as natural medicines. Extracted and distilled from various parts of plants like flowers and stems, they are highly beneficial thanks to their special properties. Since they come from a natural source, they are antibacterial, antioxidant and super healthy, as well as proven to provide powerful results.

Essential oils

Do they work?

B

ecause of their gorgeous fragrances, essential oils are beneficial for your health and general well-being as they evoke the senses. Lavender is one of the most powerful essential oils and is very popular because it is a highly effective stress reliever. Its calming aroma relaxes the body and is even used to treat insomnia – just pop a few drops of it on your pillow for a better night’s sleep. Another powerful essential oil is lemon; proven especially effective for cleaning round the house because of its refreshing scent. Base oils These come in many varieties ... argan, almond, Jojoba to name a few ... These are great to add your favourite essential oil to and make an excellent hair treatment! It smoothes, softens and adds shine to hair, making it so much easier to style. But it’s not only beneficial for your hair alone – argan oil can also be used as an effective moisturiser, as its high vitamin E content hydrates the skin. Another benefit is that it increases the elasticity of the skin, meaning that it is the ultimate protection against stretch marks during pregnancy. It seems that essential oils can really make a difference in so many ways, whether that be cosmetic purposes, cleaning products or to simply pop in your medicine cabinet! Essential oils are no longer a thing of the past – it’s time to bring them out from the hippy scene and into your home.
