Peterborough WakePark is a new two tower cable Wakeboarding Park on Beeby's West Lake in the new Hampton Water Country Park By Edward Ockleford
hamtponhub
hamptonhub
The WakePark offers one-to-one wakeboard coaching for all ability levels, from total beginners to expert riders, and can cater for anyone from 8 years old to 80 plus. Wakeboarding is a great, fun water sport for all the family and a really enjoyable way to keep fit. You just need to be able to swim, you also need to bring a towel and swimming trunks or costume, and we will provide the rest of the equipment. When I have to explain what wakeboarding is I would usually say that it’s a little like snowboarding on water. You can come and watch on any Sunday and see whether you think it is something you would like to try. We opened at the end of November and will be open every Sunday through winter for the committed wakeboarders and water sports enthusiasts who are already used to being in the water in winter conditions. I recommend that total beginners wait until it starts to warm up a little in March when we will start to run more
beginner lessons and open up for the whole weekend and 6 days a week in the school holidays. There are already three jumps in the water suitable for intermediate and advanced riders and will have several more obstacles out on the lake for all abilities over the next couple of months. The wakepark as the highest and longest two tower cable system in the UK and has permission to add two more over the next couple of years as popularity increases. As the sessions are one-to-one the cable runs as slowly or fast as you need to progress quickly, and if you fall we bring the handle to you and you can carry on without having to swim to the bank and start again. We do hope to add some additional facilities and activities to the lake in the future so follow Peterborough WakePark on Facebook to see what’s going on. Let me know what else you would like to see happening at the lake or pop down during opening hours for a look and a chat.
Discounted winter pricing offer available! You can book now online or buy vouchers for yourself or friends and family at the special offer pricing and wait until summer to book your lessons, free ride-sets, private-hire hours or annual memberships. You can also ind us on Facebook for summer opening times, other developments and events at the facility. FACEBOOK www.facebook.com/Peterborough.WakePark

Speak life! I’m not very good at finding time to keep my houseplants alive, so I don’t know if there’s much truth in the old wives’ tale that speaking to your plants makes them grow faster…although I’m happy for seasoned gardeners to provide me with evidence of their success! But I do know a little about people - and we certainly need words of life spoken over us - without them, we wither.
We don’t have much control over the words others say to us, but we always have the choice to speak life to a person in return. You don’t know how much difference you may make by speaking kindly, building another person up for a job well done, or telling someone what they mean to you. I believe little choices between family members and neighbours make a difference to communities, which in turn make a difference to whole areas, and who knows, maybe even the whole nation. Start today! Every blessing, Rachel

James, an leader in the early church, wrote a really practical book about how people should relate to each other, including in times of conflict. Nearly 2000 years ago, he wrote ‘the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.’ And about 500 years before that, the author of a book of wisdom called Proverbs advised that ‘the tongue has the power of life and death.’ Nothing has changed across the millennia.

Come and talk to us – your first meeting is free The concept of ongoing spousal maintenance, normally by an ex-husband to the ex-wife, has not existed as a principle in divorce cases for many years. To the contrary, the Courts actually have to strive to achieve a clean break in financial orders, as much as it is reasonably possible.
T: 0844 8806383 E: enquiries@vigargroup.com
Nonetheless, there are sometimes circumstances where it would be completely unfair to cut a wife adrift from all future financial support, if for example she has spent decades, by mutual agreement with the husband, as a mother and housewife and does not have the qualifications or experience in the workplace necessary to get a job. More changes are afoot, and not to a wife’s advantage. The Divorce (Financial Provision) Bill which is in its final stages in Parliament, proposes a 5 year cap on any spousal maintenance save for exceptional circumstances. This is the handiwork of the crossbench peer Baroness Deech who has long opposed ongoing divorce payments. Your local family law solicitor would not agree with this proscriptive approach. If you want to know more about these changes, contact a family law specialist to find out.

Living in Hampton
SAFELY During the winter season many of us will be out and about enjoying nature, especially around the Hamptons' scenic lakes. But while relaxing, it pays to be alert to the hidden dangers of the winter wonderland – snow, ice and freezing water can be a deadly combination. More information on keeping safe in the Hamptons can be found on the O & H website
www.ohhampton.co.uk
@ohhampton
livinginhampton
Enjoy the Hampton lakes in winter Every year people drown as a result of accidentally falling into open water, or falling through ice. Snow can obscure the edges of lakes, so always take care not to get too close, and never venture out on to frozen lakes. However tempting they look, there is no way to tell if the ice will hold your weight. An analysis of 20 recent frozen water deaths found that in more than half of them, the victim was attempting to rescue another person or a dog. If you see a person or animal fall through ice, don't rush out on to the ice to help, instead follow the advice given by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), see below.
Dogs
Dogs are usually better than us at saving themselves – in the frozen water fatalities involving a dog rescue, typically the dog managed to scramble to safety, while its would-be rescuer did not. You can avoid such a situation in the first place by keeping your dog on a lead near frozen lakes. And never throw sticks or balls on to the ice for your dog to retrieve.
Children
Water can be a magnet for children at any time of year; make sure yours are aware of the dangers, and know what to do in an emergency. If you see someone fall through ice, RoSPA advises: • Call the emergency services • Tell the person to stay still to save energy • Lie down on the bank, or have someone hold you securely, and reach out to the casualty using a pole, branch or rope If you can't find anything to reach out with, throw them out something that floats • Keep them talking until help arrives There are throw lines attached to the red notice boards at the entrance to most lake areas in the Hamptons.

The Exotic Pet Refuge needs your help By Michelle Hall We are a small local charity that cares for all animals whether they are exotic or one of our British wildlife. We are in desperate need of money to help them through the winter months. The Exotic Pet Refuge, situated in Deeping St James, is one of the few places in the country to rescue exotic animals such as racoons, monkeys, owls, meerkats and reptiles. It is part of your local community and it needs your help. Our electricity bill alone is around £2,000 a month due to all the exotics that need the heat. Benny really suffers in the cold. His previous home was a concrete pillbox in someone’s garden with no heating or outdoor enclosure. He is one of the oldest monkeys at the Refuge, but he is not on his own with his need for heating. We have just taken in two families of meerkats each consisting of a mother and four babies. These also need heated accommodation not to mention all the reptiles that we have in our care. We do offer animal experiences, they would make a great Christmas present for an animal lover in the family. How about sponsoring one of our animals for the year? It’s only £25. We have also set up a JustGiving page. Whether you are a farmer that can donate us some food, a shop or school that can collect food in a basket for us, a group of people that can fundraise for us or just a person that can donate a few quid to us. Hampton couple, Tony Green and Anne FoxleyGreen, have begun producing a series of children’s books about the adventures of a baby hedgehog that was deemed too small to survive. However, he's a determined little chap and when he finds a new friend who wants to help him his chances of surviving are improved immeasurably.
The first book has just gone to print, written by Tony and illustrated by his wife Anne: Lickle Iggle Says Hello. The story behind the book is just as fascinating as the story itself. Tony recounts: “In October 2016, we found a baby hedgehog in our driveway, in Hampton Vale, during the day... they’re nocturnal creatures and shouldn’t be out during the day at all, so we had cause for concern. We took the little hedgehog to Upwood to a lady who rescues them but, as we found out later, he was too poorly to survive.” Anne continues: “It reminded me of the time, when I was four, that I found a baby hedgehog at the bottom of our garden - I was looking for fairies in the rhubarb patch at the time - and I decided that as it was lost I would give it a home! I went back into the house, found a cereal box, put it into the box and took it up to my bedroom. You can imagine my mother’s horror when she put me to bed that evening and found the hedgehog tucked up in my bed! It was promptly returned to the bottom of the garden and never seen again!” Tony picks up the story again: “In December, we went for a short break to Stockholm where we found and bought a soft toy hedgehog. In Sweden, these toy hedgehogs are called igelkotts.
Within an hour, the story started to cascade into my head and, after a short discussion, we decided that Lickle Iggle had just been born! The runt of the litter, rejected and deserted by his mother, brothers and sisters, he was left to fend for himself. He finds little Annie, who talks to him and, surprisingly, understands him when he snuffles and grunts, and decides she wants to look after him... much to the annoyance of her father who hates animals! The determination of Annie and her new friend Hoglets are is not to be underestimated and the fun and games normally born with Lickle Iggle begin. in litters of five to Beautifully illustrated, the story will take the seven, around 60% readers on a rollercoaster of emotion but will end of them will survive by putting a smile on their faces, as well as their first winter They Lickle Iggle's. have poor The intention of the books - nine stories are being eyesight but worked on right now but there will be more - is to excellent senses raise awareness of the plight of hedgehogs in the UK, To survive a of smell and whose numbers are down by 90% over the last 50 winter of hibernation hearing years, and also to raise funds for the small charities they need to be around and organisations that take in and care for them. 650g as they will lose a There is plenty of information on the internet third of their about hedgehogs and how to help these delightful Hedgehogs body weight little creatures, so please take some time to find can run at a out more. little over 4mph
Lickle Iggle Book Review Lickle Iggle Says Hello was a pleasure to read with my two girls, who are seven and four. It is such a beautifully illustrated little book and we couldn’t wait to turn the pages and see what surprises came up next within the pictures. We knew only too well about baby animals being born from large litters and only a few of them surviving, as we’ve recently had rabbits and this has happened once or twice! We instantly grew to adore Lickle Iggle and really wanted him to survive. The girls were quite sad that he was just abandoned by his mum, brothers and sisters. Luckily he was found and cared for by little Annie.
so could keep up with a human walking!
by Charlene Bryant
It was an intriguing twist that Annie’s mum thought that she had an imaginary friend! My eldest little girl really believed that Annie could talk to hedgehogs. We also had no idea what an igelkott was until we read the book. It was great to learn so much about hedgehogs and read so many interesting facts throughout the story. The story had a perfect ending and we love that the little igelkott fell asleep with a smile on his face. It was also interesting that it was leading onto possibly another story: “Mummy said I don’t think that this is the end of the story!”

February Ghosts Hot on the heals of white January follows yellow and purple February as the crocus come into full flower, brightening our gardens in preparation for spring. February is also the month when we are most likely to find snow lying on the ground, returning to the snowdrop white of January. It is a month of often variable temperatures causing many false starts to the emergence of hibernating animals, some of which are sadly caught and killed by the sudden freezing snaps. A warm sunny day may even entice some overwintering butterflies out, but more often the air will be filled with the winter gnats. Though active year-round, winter gnats are most noticeable in the colder months when the males perform their courtship dances. Swarms gather in areas that are kept warmer by the sun. Sometimes following people purely for the heat they give off (although they resemble mosquitoes, they do not bite). In low winter sunshine, the reflective wings of the dancing swarms can make them appear like apparitions. In fact, the gatherings are sometimes called ‘ghosts’. These swarms inevitably attract predators too. Small birds snap up the flies for a much-needed protein snack. This act of gathering together to attract mates is known as ‘lekking’ and is thought to make them easier for females to find. Each male flies up and down to his own rhythm, but they cleverly space and pace themselves out to avoid colliding with others in the swarm. If threatened, they are quick to scatter and re-join nearby. Once mated, the female lays her eggs amongst decaying vegetation, which the larvae feed on.

Field Voles
I know there are field voles in Hampton because our cat unfortunately caught one the other day. It was quite recognisable with its short tail, grey-brown fur above and pale grey below, and roundish face. At first I thought it had some of its tail missing but no, field voles have very short tails – less than 30% of their body length. They are widespread across the UK but probably not seen by many. Apart from cats there are many other creatures who prey on them, such as kestrels, owls, weasels and foxes. They are plentiful in number, producing up to six litters a year comprising of up to seven young: that’s a possible breed number of 42 baby voles a year! As they only live for about a year, if they avoid predators, this reproduction rate is probably needed to maintain the general vole population. The breeding season begins next month, in March, and ends between October and December. They build nests from shredded grass leaves, which are about 10cm in diameter, at the base of clumps of grass or in underground burrows.
Field voles are active both during the day and during the night, mostly feeding on grass stems and green leaves. During the winter they do not hibernate but grow a denser layer of fur in order to withstand the cold and eat roots and bulbs when fresh greenery is not available. Field voles tend to use the same runways through grassland, and mark these with a strong scent in order to deter other voles from encroaching on their territory. However, these markings are visible in the ultra-violet light part of the spectrum, which birds, such as kestrels and owls, can detect. The vole is obviously unaware of this and thus unknowingly alerts predators to their presence. Unfortunately we cannot detect ultra-violet light in the same way and so, although they are around, we cannot easily observe them unless your cat lends a hand!

Their top tips for helping us look after our lawns as we get ready for spring are: • Keep mowing - on a fine day give it a cut on a high setting. Long and wet lawns will always encourage moss. • Let in the light - cut back over-hanging bushes that deprive the grass from essential sunlight and good air flow. Pick up rotting leaves and brush off worm casts. • Rake or scarify out dead grass – unsightly dead brown patches won’t miraculously turn green so while the lawn is dormant rake out as much dead matter as you can ready for seeding in spring. We can help! • Aerate your lawn – using a fork, spiker or aerator now is the perfect time to sort compacted ground and improve drainage. Its energetic work so if you don’t want to do it yourself call GreenThumb! • Sort those weeds – as predicted, after the long drought of 2018, a flush of weed appeared in many lawns. Get a plan in place to tackle these in the spring when the weather conditions are right. We’re the people to help! Sarah and Jo offer a FREE visit where they carry out a full analysis of your lawn and give advice. “We’re ready to tackle weeds, moss, dead patches and complete lawn renovations to get lawns looking great for 2019” says Sarah. Treatments are based on lawn size and start from as little as £15 four times a year. To book your FREE lawn analysis now contact Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028 or email peterborough@greenthumb.co.uk Website

Don't lose the plot! Hampton has a closely guarded secret, as part of the development OH Hampton provided two superb Allotment sites for use by Hampton residents. The Hampton Hargate site was established 9 years ago close to Orton footbridge on Rothbart Way and Hampton Vale 4 years ago between Coriander Drive and Nature’s Way. Both sites are managed by Hampton Parish Council. Allotments have been around in some form since Anglo Saxon times. A typical ‘Full Plot’ allotment is 250 square metres. Think of this as a doubles tennis court and you won’t be far wrong. The cost of a full plot is £50 for a year. You can also have a half plot; 125m2 for £30 per year. Both fees include membership of the National Allotment Association and Insurance for two plot holders. Hampton Hargate also have a small number of quarter plots for those who are single or who do not have the time for anything larger. An Allotment or a Community Allotment Garden to give it its correct name
is provided by the council to enable a family to grow their own fruit and vegetables but members can also house up to 8 chickens to provide eggs or grow flowers. As with all things, there are rules that dictate what you can use the Allotment for but if you stick to using it for the above and don’t turn it into a storage yard or a car park, extract minerals from it or run a business from it you will be alright. Having an Allotment is only the start of the journey, to properly maintain one requires an investment of time and effort in order to make it productive and to keep it weed free. In general, this will be around 8 hours a week for a full plot at the height of the growing season. If there are two of you this can be achieved in a morning together with an hour during the week to water and weed. In order to ensure that you keep on top of things there are 4 inspections a
year to check that your weeds are not dispersing their seeds onto your neighbour’s plot. This only becomes a problem if you are not putting the required amount of time into your plot and it becomes neglected. Knowing where your food comes from can be quite important, It is generally cheaper to go to the supermarket and buy your fruit and veg, but the pleasure of eating something, knowing that you have seen it develop from the seed that you have nurtured and you know exactly what chemicals have (or have not) been used on it make the effort worthwhile. There’s nothing better than digging up new potatoes and having them in the pot 10 minutes later or dipping a slice of toast into a freshly laid egg. If you are interested in a Hargate Plot and would like more info email enquiries@hhcag.co.uk or visit the HPC website.

Money Matters
Top 10 Employer NMW Mistakes by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
There are lots of reasons why an employer might find themselves not paying the national minimum wage (NMW) correctly. To help employers avoid making mistakes HMRC have drawn together a list of the most common causes of underpayment.
1
Failure to apply the annual minimum wage rate increase as rates go up each year on 1 April.
2
Missed birthdays as employees turn 18, 21 or 25 years old and move between NMW rates.
3
Paying the apprentice rate to non-apprentices. Recognised apprentices must have an apprenticeship contract and undergo an element of structured training.
4
Continuing to pay the apprentice rate for too long. The apprentice rate only applies to apprentices under the age of 19, or if aged 19 or over within the first year of their apprenticeship.
5
Making wage deductions for items or expenses connected with the job. This could include safety clothing, uniforms, tools etc.
6
Making wage deductions deemed to be for the employer's 'own use or benefit'. For example a Christmas club saving scheme. It does not matter that the worker can choose to buy into the scheme and the employer does not have to make a profit from it.
7
Charging a worker more than the stated offset rate for living accommodation, currently £49 a week.
8
Not paying for all the time worked such as time spent travelling, training or downtime at the employer's disposal.
9
Not paying for additional time worked such as time spent clearing security checks once a worker's shift has finished.
Including elements of pay that do not count towards minimum wage such as tips and the premium element of pay associated with shift premium.

To serve Sprigs of fresh mint and blueberries Method To make the panna cotta, soak the gelatine leaves in a little cold water until soft. Place the milk, cream, vanilla pod, scraped seeds and sugar into a heavy-bottomed pan and bring to a simmer. Remove the vanilla pod and discard. Squeeze the water out of the gelatine leaves, then add to the pan. Remove from the heat and stir until the gelatine has dissolved. Divide the mixture between four pretty glass serving bowls and set aside to cool. Place into the fridge for at least an hour, until set. To make the sauce place the sugar, water and the splash of liqueur into a pan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring until all the sugar has dissolved. Remove the pan from the heat and add the raspberries. Use a hand blender to blitz the sauce until smooth. Pass it through a sieve to remove the seeds. To serve, pour the sauce over the panna cotta and garnish with the blueberries and a sprig of mint. Alternative serving method - pour the panna cotta mix into oiled moulds rather than serving dishes, and set in the fridge as before. Blitz half the raspberries into the sauce and strain through the sieve, then stir in the remaining raspberries. When the panna cotta are set, dip the moulds in hot water for a few seconds and turn the panna cotta out on to a plate, spoon over the sauce and decorate with blueberries and mint.

MEN UNITED IN SONG 2019: SUPPORTING PROSTATE CANCER UK Looking for a fresh challenge, new skills and a great social scene to boot? Then look no further… Following its phenomenal success over the last few years, Men United in Song is back for 2019, once again raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. Launching in March, the project will sign up 40 local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none) to rehearse over 10 weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset Theatre on Saturday 11th May. To date the project has engaged hundreds of local men, raising many thousands of pounds for the charity, as well as inspiring similar projects across the country – a fantastic result! John, from Moulton Chapel, says “I was looking for something new to do and Men United in Song seemed like a great way of meeting new people and supporting a good cause. I wasn’t sure what to expect and it was quite a steep learning curve!
I didn’t realise before that not everyone in a choir sang all the same thing together, there are harmonies too, and when it all comes together it sounds absolutely amazing! The whole experience was fantastic and performing in the concert was the icing on the cake!” “Having seen Men United in Song advertised in previous years and been tempted to get involved, I finally got the impetus to go for it when my father was diagnosed” says Martin from Bourne. “Although the idea initially filled me with some trepidation, the experience proved to be extremely enjoyable and fulfilling. It’s a very rewarding opportunity whilst raising vital awareness and funds for the continuing fight against prostate cancer.” “I wanted to improve my singing and Men United in Song seemed like a great opportunity!”
says Adam from Thorney. “Turning up for the first rehearsal was daunting, but I immediately felt comfortable singing in such a relaxed environment. The highlight for me was knowing that we were creating something amazing for such a great cause. I've met all sorts of people, from farmers to accountants to new dads - without this project we would never have had the chance to meet and discover how we can really sing. I would highly recommend the experience!” Men United In Song is not all about the singing or even about the fundraising, there’s a fantastic social scene too! Ultimately, it’s about a group of men getting together in a shared enterprise, which of course is the idea behind Prostate Cancer UK’s Men United campaign, and why the charity seemed such a good fit for the project.

Partnership Working in Hampton Hampton Parish Council The Parish Council are proud to work in partnership with many other services in Peterborough and using the precept of helping to keep Hampton safe and tidy, as well as setting up and funding initiatives that can help to build community cohesion. The Parish Council has funded a full-time Prevention and Enforcement Officer since May 2018 and Lengthsmen in the Parish since 2010. These services help to maintain and improve the area. Your Parish Councillors meet at least once a month to discuss issues within Hampton and what can be done to alleviate any potential problems. Public participation at the council meetings is encouraged and the Parish wants to hear residents’ concerns. You can find out what is on the agenda for the next meeting on the Parish website www.hamptonpc.org.uk

Lengthsmen keep the area clean, tidy and litter-free The Parish employs two lengthsmen contracted from Amey; John works within the Hargate area and has worked in the Parish for two years and Dan has worked in the Vale area since 2010. Both work extremely hard to keep the area litter free, clean and tidy. Both John and Dan have set routes, however, they can be diverted if there is a build-up of litter in a particular area and can collect litter from all residential streets in Hampton. Instances of fly-tipping will be reported to Amey and the PES Officer. The lengthsmen also empty the bins around the shops in Hargate & Vale (all other bins are emptied by O&H) and will respond to broken glass and sharps on any open areas of Hampton. I’m sure all residents will agree that they are both a valued asset within the community.
Supporting local projects and community groups The Parish is extremely keen to support local projects and community groups that run in Hampton and directly benefit Hampton residents. Over the past year we have supported Romsey Mill which continues to provide excellent groups and support for youths in Hampton, Mini Movers which run a parent and toddler group in Vale, Hampton in Action and many others. If you help to run, or attend, a group in Hampton, grant forms are available on the Parish website. The Parish is also compiling a list of community groups within the area, this will be published on the website, so residents can find a group that suits their needs. This will also assist the Parish with the grant-giving process. If you wish your group to feature on this list please contact the Parish Office.

I volunteered for Neighbourhood Watch during my time studying Criminology and know how difficult it can be to get residents involved in the scheme, I also understand that people don’t always have the time to attend meetings and may have other priorities such as working, childcare family life etc.
Jodie Aston - Hampton Parish Clerk
Neighbourhood Watch Scheme The Parish has recently funded a Hamptonwide Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. As you probably know, Neighbourhood Watch Schemes are popular worldwide and, in many places, they work fantastically well, however, in Hampton the schemes weren’t working as well as they could be. "I volunteered for Neighbourhood Watch during my time studying Criminology and know how difficult it can be to get residents involved in the scheme, I also understand that people don’t always have the time to attend meetings and may have other priorities such as working, childcare family life etc. So, I started to develop a new Neighbourhood Watch Scheme that fits Hampton better, which would involve no meetings, no costs for residents to purchase street signs and utilising the people that are out and about on the streets of Hampton daily, such as the lengthsmen and PES Officer. Neighbourhood Watch – Hampton
Information is reported back to me and then, if necessary, onto the police, or dealt with by the PES Officer. To prevent residents skipping important emails, information that is specific to Hampton is circulated through the Parish website and Facebook page, so if there's a recent crime in your area, you may see an alert to ensure your windows are locked or that any ladders are hidden to prevent intruders accessing the upper floors. To ensure that this scheme works as efficiently as it can, residents need to report any issues to me, the Clerk, at Hampton Parish Council. This could be suspicious activity in the area, cars parked where they shouldn’t be, anti-social behaviour, graffiti, littering ... the list is endless. By reporting this, we can then make sure it's logged and reported to the correct service to be dealt with as quickly as possible. I also have some street signs that are free to residents who wish to put one up in their street."

Peterborough City Council's Prevention and Enforcement Service covers a wide range of issues, including parking enforcement, environmental enforcement and anti-social behaviour. It also works closely with partner agencies, including Police and Fire Service, to respond to local issues and concerns. Andy Orvis has been in the role since November, during which time he has been undertaking regular patrols of the area. The primary focus over the last two months has been on inconsiderate parking around the schools and shops, in both Hargate and Vale, and alongside the Traffic Regulation Orders that are being put in place, this has helped to ease some of the problems in the area.
PES Officer Andy Orvis "My name is Andy Orvis I am 49 years old, I have 6 children and I’m also a grandad. I enjoy fishing and cycling (you may see me patrolling Hampton on my bike!) I have worked for Peterborough City Council for 16 years, starting as a Parking Attendant then moving on to become a Civil Enforcement Officer, before my current role as a Prevention and Enforcement Officer, which means that I can also issue Fixed Penalty Notices for things like littering. I cover both Hargate and Vale, which can be a challenge due to the extent and number of high priority areas, however, on each shift I ensure that I am patrolling one of the schools at either the drop-off or pick-up times. I am a very happy and positive person, I’m enjoying getting to know the residents and looking forward to the future." If you have issues you would like to raise, please contact Andy direct Hampton-pes@peterborough.gov.uk
Cambridgeshire Constabulary in Hampton Hampton Parish Council are proud to have close links with Cambridgeshire Constabulary and the Southern Sector team who regularly patrol the Hampton area. They also work closely with our PES Officer, routinely patrolling together. Members of the Southern Sector recently attended one of our monthly meetings to discuss the Parish priorities for the forthcoming year. Hampton is privileged to have our own dedicated PCSO, Tracy Proctor.
Peterborough Southern Sector
Tracy Proctor "Hi, my name is Tracy Proctor and I am your local Police Community Support Officer. I have worked for the Police as a PCSO for 15 years. Hampton was my first area that I covered and although I have been moved around the city within my role, I always come back to Hampton! I am friendly, approachable and keen to help keep Hampton a great place to live. Hampton has grown so much in the last 15 years and has kept a great community spirit; the residents are so passionate about making it a fabulous place to live! I enjoy being involved in the community and recently collected over 500 pairs of socks which have been distributed amongst those less fortunate in Peterborough, such as the soup kitchen and garden house. I am also a mum of 4 with 7 grand-kids and I have a cat called Peanut, I’m a real cat lady! I will always try to do the very best I can in my job and for the people of Hampton and I am keen to deal with any issues." If you need to discuss anything with Tracy, you can email Tracy.Proctor@cambs.pnn.police.uk If you have any comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact Tracy at Parishoffice@hamptonpc.co.uk

Children in Need
It has been a great start to the spring term so far at Hampton Hargate. Our Reception children have once again been busy investigating the mysterious disappearance of some scooters from school. They happily took on the role of the ‘police’ and followed the clues around the school to see if they could solve the mystery. They carefully pieced all of the evidence which led them to a remarkable discovery! It was then our very own Mrs Christophi who confessed to taking them as she wanted to play on them. The scooters have now been given back and the case has been closed! Meanwhile Year 1 enjoyed their trip to the Peterborough Museum at the beginning of term. They spent the day exploring the museum and had a great time making models of dinosaurs out of clay and identifying dinosaur fossils! Our classes have been working hard on producing some fantastic displays with the theme of ‘Lost Words’ such as Kingfisher, Hare, Fern and Newt. They look incredible all throughout the corridors, we clearly have some budding artists! Years 2,3 and 4 enjoyed a Film night watching Sherlock Gnomes and Reception have been maximising their topic work with visits from both the Ambulance and Fire Service. In fundraising news, we raised £465 for the Alzheimers Society with our Christmas Jumper days at the end of last term. There is also still plenty to look forward to during this spring term including the Year 4 Stibbington residential and our Languages week and Airport Days!
Hampton Gardens students raised £747.97 for Children in Need. Staff and students for baking, taking part in sporting events throughout the week and joining us in the school dance record, we managed to get 124 staff and students dancing to Timber and the Cha Cha slide, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire joined us to report on our fundraising efforts!
Operation Christmas Child Hampton Gardens students brought in items from home, like hygiene products, toys and stationery and managed to fill 20 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, ready to be sent to a poorer country.

TWO WEEK TRIAL.
It’s been a busy month at Little Acorns; we have especially enjoyed messy play. We have been painting, playing in shaving foam, flour and water. The preschool have also enjoyed using the computers, learning to follow instructions to complete simple games! The preschool children are looking forward to their families joining them for lunch at the nursery soon. We have limited spaces left to start with us this school year; we are now booking places for September 2019 and into 2020.
The Kumon Maths and English Programmes are worksheet-based study programmes aimed at building good learning foundations and developing ability in small, manageable steps. Students attend their local Kumon study centre once or twice a week and complete a small amount of work daily outside of study centre visits to cement study skills through frequent practice. Students are encouraged to problem solve and work out answers independently. The Kumon Instructor continuously monitors, guides, and challenges students to grow by gradually increasing the level of difficulty of the worksheets she assigns, while considering increases in each student’s level of academic ability. With 60 years of experience and over 4 million students worldwide, the Kumon Maths and English Programmes enable children to embrace new challenges and to develop strong study skills - aiming to help students confidently study work above their school grade level. The Kumon Peterborough Hampton Study Centre is located at the Active Hampton Sports Centre, Beaumont Way, Hampton Hargate PE7 8DN, with classes running on Wednesdays 3.30 -6.30pm and Saturdays 9.00am – 12.00pm.

Hampton College Hampton College - Musharaf Asghar, one of the stars of Educating Yorkshire in 2014 was our guest speaker at the Certificate Presentation Evening. Mushy was struggling to complete the oral part of his English GCSE which was worth 20% of the overall grade. However with support from his teacher, Mr Burton and a little help from the film 'The King's Speech', Mushy discovered that he could temporarily overcome his stammer whilst listening to music through headphones. The evening was a fantastic success, with over 100 students and their families and friends attending, making for a positive celebration of all our students’ fantastic achievements. Awards were given to students who have gone above and beyond in both their progress and contribution to life at the College. Jacob Lummis won the Hampton College Award for Resilience. Jacob
consistently worked hard and showed dedication to his studies, not leaving the classroom until he fully understood the topic that was being taught. Athena Martin won the award for Service to the School. Over her time at the College, she was involved in many school performances, was a Senior Student Leadership Team member and was involved in charity events. Congratulations to all our students.
'Well done' to Cygnets pre school! In December Cygnets received a well earned ‘OUTSTANDING’ grade in all areas in our OFSTED inspection. The Cygnets staff have worked extremely hard and are proud of what we have achieved. Further news, is that we have some amazing new enriching resources added to our setting that the children are thoroughly enjoying. Tuesday 14 February - Parent Play Workshop from 3.30-4.30 with goody bags given to each family that attends.

Hampton Mini Movers
Folksworth School The Folksworth school PTA did a fantastic job last year and, amongst other investments, raised enough money for the school to purchase 15 ipads for our children. These resources have been available since the beginning of term, and they are already making a terrific difference to the way classes approach their work, and record their achievements. Our thanks go to the PTA team who made this possible, and to everyone who contributed to a PTA event during last year. This technology is particularly relevant this month as we have Safer Internet Day at the beginning of February. The internet is such a rich and fantastic resource for learners, but we need to ensure it is also a safe place for children to explore and engage. This is so important to our school, that we have created a number of ‘Digital Leaders’ – children who are being trained up to become online safety champions for their peers. The theme of Safer Internet Day this year is ‘Together for a Better Internet’…and here at Folksworth, we are certainly demonstrating that.
The Ark After the busy weeks of December when many of The Ark families joined us for the Christmas Journey and the Christmas Crafts Afternoon here at CSK, it was good to welcome back old and new faces in January. Our Spring Programme is up and running and we have already been finding out about David the Shepherd boy through songs, stories and crafts. Later in the term we will be focusing on families. As Winter turns to Spring, we can look forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day and Mothering Sunday through our Craft and Sensory activities. Thinking about how much we are loved has got to be good along with celebrating all those women in our lives who mean so much to us, however old or young we are. As mentioned, we are always pleased to see new faces. Parents, grandparents, carers - there is no need to book, just turn up at 10am on Thursday at CSK Church. The session finishes at 11.15am. We have a dedicated area for babies and their parents/carers within The Ark setup so if you have recently had a baby, do come and check us out. We would love to see you.

Little Acorns Day Nursery is
outstanding!
We are very proud to announce that we have achieved the 'outstanding' outcome from our recent Ofsted inspection which took place just before Christmas. The staff have all been working very hard to maintain the outstanding service we provide to children and their families since our last inspection in 2014. We were delighted when we were given the outstanding grade again in December 2018. One of our main focuses at Little Acorns is to work closely with the families as well as the children who attend the setting. It is very important that parents, grandparents and other family members feel included and part of the Little Acorns family. We are so pleased that Ofsted were able to see this and sense the homely feeling at Little Acorns.
“Staff provide children with a wonderfully warm and welcoming environment. The leadership team gives partnerships with parents the highest priority.” Children attending the nursery benefit from social skills and play skills, providing preparation for when they start school. The staff at Little Acorns treat every child as an individual, providing activities and guidance to support their individual learning. "Staff have exceptional skills in leading and extending children’s learning.” Children gain confidence through these experiences; parents are involved so the children’s learning is consistent at home and nursery.
To read our full Ofsted report please visit the Ofsted website. For more information on our nursery or if you would like to book a visit please contact us on 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk Limited places available until September 2019. Now booking spaces for 2020!

Explaining the Montessori approach Montessori is a proven and powerful approach to education which is based on a deep understanding of the way children learn. There are certain key principles of the Montessori movement: Order and structure Although learning is childled, children need order and structure to thrive. Everything in the classroom has its place, and children take responsibility for putting one activity away before moving on to another. Sensory learning Children learn through the senses, so Montessori puts emphasis on preparing teaching materials with great care. ‘For example, children use proper ceramic tableware and glasses, rather than plastic child-safe ones,’ Barbara says. Freedom The single most important factor in child development, according to Maria Montessori. The Montessori classroom provides experiences, activities and environments that encourage children to follow their natural instincts. Sensitive periods The Montessori movement says that children move through ‘sensitive periods’ when they’re particularly receptive to learning a new skill, such as reading, writing or counting. Teachers watch out for these opportunities and take advantage of them, rather than trying to get a child reading or writing at a certain age. Discipline is seen as something that should come from inside, rather than being imposed. Teachers focus on helping children develop social and emotional skills. Rewards and punishments are not used, and teachers will only step in when a child is behaving in a disruptive or upsetting way.

THE BEST OF
Longthorpe Tower
Longthorpe Tower is one of Peterborough’s historic gems. It is a surviving part of a 14th-century fortified manor house, and contains the finest set of medieval wall paintings in a domestic setting anywhere in Western Europe, giving a rare insight into the medieval mind. Unlock the secrets to Longthorpe Tower’s remarkable history! Explore this beautiful medieval tower, part of a manor house that was built around 1300, and discover the hidden gems within. The main chamber is covered with an incredible set of wall paintings from the 14th century. Leading experts have listed Longthorpe Tower as one of the 100 most important historic sites in the UK.
Kings, saints, animals, musicians and monsters jostle for space in the finest set of domestic medieval wall paintings anywhere in Western Europe. These wall paintings give a glimpse into the medieval view of the world. Look out for the monster that fires flaming poo from its bottom! Visit our exhibition, which tells the story of the Tower and the remarkable family that built it, who rose from being humble peasants who worked the land to become knights who rubbed shoulders with kings. As you can see we are in love with Longthorpe Tower and intend to open it to the public for the 2019 season at the end of March. We’re always keen to hear from volunteers who can help us present this medieval gem to visitors. Our volunteers share their knowledge about the area and the Tower and make each visit special. Dates for volunteer training sessions and a pre-season get together will be announced in early February 2019. If you would like to join our team please contact Gill Benedikz on 01733 864775 or email volunteering@vivacity.org

Can it really be 37 years since George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley formed one of the most enduring pop groups of the 80s? In four short years WHAM! sold more than 28 million records, topping the charts with three albums, four number one singles and eleven top ten hits. They featured in the Live Aid concert of 1985 and were the first western pop group to ever tour in China. Their

Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur’s quest to find the Holy Grail. Inspired by the classic comedy film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the musical also diverts a bit from more traditional versions of the legend. Instead, Spamalot features shenanigans including a line of beautiful dancing girls, flatulent Frenchmen, and killer rabbits. Outside, there is plague with a 50% chance of pestilence and famine. Throughout the show, Arthur, traveling with his servant Patsy, recruits several knights to accompany him on his quest, including Sir Bedevere, Sir Robin, Sir Lancelot, and Sir Galahad. Besides the rabbits and farting Frenchman, they meet such characters

Magic of the Musicals Musical theatre is more popular than ever before: there are more musicals than plays running in the West End and all top 10 London shows are musicals, with Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera both running for over 30 years, and touring shows like Joseph and his Technicolor Dreamcoat for even longer! Year on year new musicals keep coming, with sell-out shows like Hamilton opening to rave reviews and earning the art form a well-deserved spot in the pop culture conversation. With this seemingly endless appetite for new shows, musical theatre has become a larger part of the entertainment mainstream than ever before. Established stage musicals continue to leap to Hollywood in increasing volume - Rock of Ages, Les Miserables, Jersey Boys, Annie, Into the Woods and Mamma Mia to name just a few - while films including Frozen are set to boomerang from screen to stage.

There’s no business like show business! Join Peterborough Male Voice Choir, Peterborough Voices and Peterborough Youth Choir at The Cresset on Friday 22nd March for a whistlestop tour of West End greats, showcasing songs from some of the world’s best loved musicals including Oliver!, South Pacific, Le Miserables, Barnum and Phantom of the Opera.
This crossover between cinema and musical theatre appeals to unprecedented audiences, with films like La La Land and The Greatest Showman reinventing song and dance for a new generation. Musicals don’t always have to represent love and romance – there are lots of other, sometimes surprising, themes to be explored. Ultimately, musicals are loved by everyone because they tap into the full, complicated, spectrum of human emotions – humour, pathos, love, anger – which has universal resonance, and universal appeal. So, roll out the red carpet for an evening that would do Broadway and the West End proud and join the city’s award-winning choirs as they perform some of the greatest songs from some of the most famous and best loved musicals of all time, all brought together in one spectacular night…don’t miss it!
Magic of the Musicals will be at The Cresset at 7.30pm on Friday 22 March 2019. Tickets available from the Cresset Box Office, by phone on 01733 265705 or online at www.peterboroughsings.org.uk BOOK NOW!

Straight or wavy, the high ponytail is in! It works on every hair texture, and elongates your facial features. Spray your roots with a lightweight hairspray, then brush up in line with the cheekbones for the most flattering placement and secure with an elastic. If you're going for a super-smooth finish, you can use a bit of a shine serum to get rid of any flyaways. And if you want your hair to look thicker, you can pop in a few hair extensions around the base of the ponytail.
Have you ever marked a life event by changing your hairstyle? Did you regret it, or did you feel free? Many people, most of them women, use haircuts as a marker for change. In films the main character often undergoes a makeover as a metaphor for the dramatic changes they undergo in the movie: Sandy in Grease, and Julia Roberts' character in Pretty Woman are just two of them. Before the makeover things were bad; after the makeover things are good. Simples. Or is it? In real life hairdressers bear witness to this scenario frequently. We may not tell them directly, but often they will sense we're on a mission to create a new improved version of ourselves; or a quick way to shed the past and move on. But dramatic hairstyle changes while in the midst of a life crisis can prove ill-advised. Sometimes we're not really after a new hairstyle, more a whole new life. And as satisfying as it is to leave a salon with a completely new look, we need to remember that our hair might look different, but our problems will remain the same. We will still feel just as bad about our husband running off with our best friend, we’ll just be doing it with shorter hair! During a divorce, a bereavement or a health crisis we will experience a maelstrom of emotions:
and one-minute chopping all our hair off will feel like the best decision in the world, but the next minute, when we look in the mirror and see a total stranger staring back at us it might feel terrifying. Yet hair is an important aspect of how we express who we are and how we would like to be seen. Changing our hair is one of the easiest ways to send a signal to the world that we have changed. It can be a great tool to help us shed an outgrown 'self'. My friend shed her shoulderlength blonde hair for a pixie crop shortly after she gave birth to twins. She felt she needed freedom from her hair care routine, so she could spend more time with her babies. For her it was freeing to be able to wake, shower and be ready to go in minutes. I had my tousled waist-length hair cut to a chic bob when I started my first proper job in journalism. I felt like I needed to create a bit of distance between 'student me' and 'professional me'. Like the caterpillar shedding the chrysalis I was ready to be someone new and the hair salon was my chrysalis of choice. So, the next time you collapse into the hairdresser’s comfy chair intent on an image overhaul, just pause for a second and ask yourself why, and whether now is the best time.

Exciting trends in
Health and wellness
Plant-based foods, wearable tech, MCT oils, CBD products… The future looks just as bright for 2019, with trends that show an increasing focus on fullbody wellness and holistic health. So, here are some trends we're super excited to see in health and wellness this year.
More choices in plant-based alternatives Plant-based meats and dairy have sky-rocketed in popularity in the past few years, with the plant-based food and beverage market growing a whopping 62 percent since 2013 and plantbased alternatives conquering the hearts of omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans alike. Plant-based products have become increasingly common in new supermarket aisles, notably a new vegan range in Aldi. Vegan kebabs delivered to your door! New company Resist Kitchen is a favourite of ours and delivers fresh plant based kebabs direct to your door. At the moment this service is only available at the weekends, but watch this space!

Revolutionary weight loss & toning The revolution - Vacu Activ Low pressure in the capsule improves blood circulation in the parts mainly exposed to formation of cellulite It also speeds up the circulation of the lymph, so that toxins are removed from the body faster.
5D lipo machine Harnessing the power of low temperatures, this treatment aims to help contour bodies when used in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle. A therapist works a high-tech probe over the selected area, applying vacuum suction which creates a warm and then a cold sensation as the treatment takes effect.
The effect of the vacuum is to draw more blood into the lower parts of the body - which causes four times faster fat burning compared to traditional aerobic training.
Which areas can be targeted? Treatment areas: Upper abdomen, lower abdomen, hip, flanks, back bra line, left or right upperarm, left or right under arm, left or right inner thigh, left or right outer thigh, buttocks & chin
This type of solution helps to lose fat tissue 4 times quicker. • Extreme fat burning • Reduction of cellulite and stretch marks • Smooth and firm body • Improving metebolism • Loss excess weight 4x faster • Improve well-being and increase vitality • Effects visible for many months
• Intensive slimming of problematic parts of your body • Cellulite reduction • Improved circulation of your lymph and blood • Skin firmer and smoother

• Cleanse & detoxify your body. • Hydrate tissues. • Support immune system. • Increase your metabolism. • 30 minutes of roller massage equals 1.5 hours of masseuse massage. • Infrared lamps are quite therapeutic and heat your body. • No masseuse, no discomfort of another person touching. Superior results can be achieved when roller massages are combined with Muse Vacutredmill or Muse Vacubike and a personal dietary plan.
