As Easter approaches, we are pleased to offer you some great gift ideas on page 25 ... and they don't all involve chocolate! At last spring is truly in the air and always a lovely time to get out and explore. Its great to hear that the Stanground Walks group is growing steadily. You can read about the new local routes they are offering for all to enjoy on page 9. And there’s a shimmer of blue on page 18 beckoning you into beautiful woods across the country. Now is also the time of year to think about creating homes for our solitary bees. Shop bought bee hotels are not always effective, so you can learn how to build your own on page 23. The Gazette we like to say a huge 'well done' to the Cardea Residents' Association for their efforts to clean up Cardea. Over 60 local people took part in what became a fantastic example of community spirit. Hope you enjoy this issue. Have a wonderful Easter. Lynsey and the Gazette team. With thanks, as always, to our contributors and advertisers. Please don’t forget to mention Stanground Gazette when using any of the services advertised in our pages.

Community Fundraiser
Stanground C of E Churches
On Sunday 2 April at The Mingle with the stars Heron, Stanground there will PBOVS Cancer is a celebrity football be a family event from 2.30 match and gala evening held until 6pm. annually in Peterborough.
The wonderful Easter season is here Warmth has returned to the earth and everything is waking from its winter sleep with new life all around. In our churches we are celebrating Jesus waking from death on that first Easter. During Holy Week, which starts this year on Sunday 9 April, we remember all the events that led to Jesus death, then we wait for his return to life and celebrate the eternal life he experienced on that wonderful morning. You are welcome to join us as we prepare for Easter: On Sunday 2 April at 4pm, there’s a pre-Easter celebration for the community of Cardea. This is an informal fun event with, tea and hot cross buns, Palm Sunday crafts and maybe even a palm procession. Then on the morning of Saturday 15 April it’s the turn of St John’s Church to host ‘Experience Easter’, with lots of activities, including creating the Easter Garden, eating Easter food and an Easter egg hunt around the church and churchyard. Both of these are free events. Later in the month we have two more important days: The Memorial Service, in association with Stanground Co-op Funeral Service is on Sunday 23 April at 3pm at St John’s. This is for anyone who would like to take some time to remember a loved one, in a very peaceful and supporting service at St John’s. You don’t have to have used the Co-op service, nor does it have to be a recent loss – all are invited. And on 30 April it’s Godparents' Sunday. In our services, at 9.30am at St John's, and at 11.15am at St Michael’s, we will be remembering the Godchild - Godparent relationship. Sometimes we start off with good intentions as Godparents, and then life gets busy, so this is a chance to come to a special event to renew the bond. As usual life in Stanground churches is busy – and exciting! Why not come and see for yourself?
May God bless and keep you, Anne /StangroundCofEChurches

Easter celebrations Hot cross buns, fluffy bunnies, lots of chocolate. What’s not to celebrate?! We celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, Christmas. But we don’t celebrate death. Roman and Christian historians record that the real, historical person of Jesus of Nazareth died at the end of the Jewish Passover festival. On Good Friday we do not celebrate the death of Jesus, but we celebrate what His death achieved. If someone saves our life, if they gave us a transplant or their bravery meant we lived instead of dying ourselves, we would never forget them. This is the reason that Christians have a quiet, grateful remembrance of Jesus and his death on Good Friday. His death on that cross made us right with God and gave us the chance to have a fresh start, a new beginning. On Easter Sunday we celebrate Resurrection. It was recorded both by the friends and the enemies of Jesus that his friends saw him after his death, that he was alive. This gives us hope, now and for the future. Jesus promises new life, eternal life. Feel free to join us at Stanground Baptist Church on Maundy Thursday (13 April) at 7pm for a time of reflection and for a service of celebration on Easter Sunday (16 April) at 10.15 am, when we decorate a cross with Spring flowers. The decorated cross will then be placed outside the chapel for everyone in the local community to see. Come and celebrate with us: sacrifice, new life and hope.
There will be a demonstration of line dancing and an opportunity to learn and join in. Also, there will be some stalls and activities suitable for all ages. Ticket prices include a ploughman’s and a children’s tea for under 5s. £5 adults. £3 children ages 5-12. Under 5s FREE. The event is in aid of patients with Cystic Fibrosis at Peterborough City Hospital. We are raising money to purchase a nebuliser which is going to cost approximately £600 This machine converts liquid medication to fine droplets that are inhaled by breathing through a face mask. The fine mist can then reach all areas of the lungs. Bob and his family are doing this as a way of thanking the medical team there who cared for their daughter from birth to sixteen before she was transferred to Papworth hospital where, despite excellent care, she passed away aged 26 years.

Sharing the message of Jesus ◆ New church, new community
◆ Warm welcome to all
◆ Relaxed, relevant & respectful Now meeting at Cardea Community Sports Pavilion, Bellona Drive, Peterborough PE2 8GP. Sunday mornings at 10.30am
Walking for health
The aim of the walk is to: • Help inactive people to take up exercise. • Help people recovering from an illness or surgery to become fit again. • Provide a new activity for previously active people who cannot carry on with their old activity. • Provide an opportunity for socializing and meeting new people, which is as important as the fitness aspect. • Reach and maintain a healthy level of fitness.

Despite the weather, our walks have continued every Tuesday and Friday. It is our intention to keep them going through the next year and beyond. When we have been rained off, we still meet at the Sue Ryder Café and go for a chat, something to eat and a coffee or tea.
S
ince our last article in the January issue, our numbers have swelled and because of this, we had a record number of 34 walkers turning up for the Tuesday walk, which has resulted in having two groups on the Tuesday walk, a fast one and a slow one. You choose whichever one you wish to walk with. Also, we are trialling a shorter walk for those who would prefer it, with a view that when they get fitter they join the other groups as they wish. As the weather improves, more people are looking towards improving their fitness, getting out in the fresh air and meeting new people. And you can join us! There are two walks that are approximately four and a half miles long and a shorter one at just under three miles. The River Walk and the shorter walk are on Tuesdays and take one hour and 20 minutes and the Farcet Walk is on Fridays and takes one 1hour and 30 minutes to complete. The Age Group of the
walkers is between 50 – 80 years old, with the occasional attendance of younger people throughout the year. The Sue Ryder Café on Whittlesey Way is the start and finish point of the walks. Arriving for the off at about 10:55am on Tuesdays and 10:25am on Fridays, we complete new walker registration forms, the walk nominal rolls and the walk briefing, before commencing the walk. The walk we choose is dependent on the weather conditions and who is walking on the day. Once we arrive back at the Café, where we are all well looked after, we have a quick chat and some sustenance. The walks are open to everyone over the age of 18, regardless of their level of fitness. Mums with their children and walkers with dogs are also welcome, the parents or owners are responsible for who they bring with them. Show people that walking is not just about physical health it is great for the mind too.

Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest we will publish them here.
A tax return can be filed as soon after the tax year ends once you have collected all that is required – you do not have to wait until the following January. It is far better and less stressful to get everything together sooner rather than later and of course the sooner you will know what the dreaded tax bill, in the following January, will be. Also, if your tax return is prepared before the second payment on account in July is due and if your tax is less than the previous year, you can apply to reduce it. Lesley who keeps our offices running smoothly has compiled a few tips to help. Lesley’s Housekeeping Tips for the Tax Year Ended 5 April 2017 If you were scrambling around last tax year to get everything ready for your accountant or even yourself to enable your tax return to be prepared, why not follow these few tips to make life easier. As soon as you receive information relevant for the tax year 2016/2017, make a file (or obtain a proverbial shoebox) to keep everything together. These are a few items you should obtain and keep; P60’s or P45’s; Pension statements; If you are a landlord and claim mortgage interest relief, keep the mortgage statement(s) that are in respect of let property; Obtain and keep bank/building society interest certificates for all accounts that pay you interest; Keep all dividend vouchers in respect of dividends received; Don’t forget that if your spouse or civil partner has not used all their personal allowances, they may transfer 10% of their PA to you, providing you are not a higher rate tax payer. Tips for Self Employed and owner managed limited companies: Obtain and keep invoices and/or receipts for all expenses. HMRC could refuse you tax relief or input VAT if you have no evidence of an expense without a receipt or VAT invoice. Also, fuel receipts etc. do fade if left in sunlight; Obtain and keep all bank statements where business transactions are made; Write up your records on a regular basis, there is nothing worse than having to write your records up for a long period. These are only a few ideas to consider and there may be many other “housekeeping” matters you could attend to make your life easier (and your accountants) and take some of the stress out of preparing tax returns.

Great British Spring Clean I hope everyone’s enjoying the first signs of spring and making plans for the summer. We certainly are over here and we began by joining in with the Great British Spring Clean which, for us, took part on Saturday 4 March
A
round sixty residents and volunteers joined together in a team effort to rid the community of litter and to clear the ponds and ditches of debris, some of which had been blown over by storm Doris the month earlier. Whole families came out with grandparents and children mucking in, and it was mucky! One of our locals is President of the Ahmdaiyya Community Peterborough and he brought friends from the wider area to help, which really boosted our numbers! We were also joined by Councillors Chris Harper and Ray Bisby, Mrs Ashley the head teacher
from St Michaels Church School, members of Cardea Residents' Association and Neighbourhood Watch. The start and finish of the event was hosted by Cardea Community Sports Association. Refreshments were donated by volunteers and served in the pavilion (by Jason Holt of the CCSA) which is proving to be a real hub for community events such as this. We were amazed at what can be done in just a morning's work as we all watched the pile of rubbish collected grow and grow. The event was enjoyed by all who took part, so much so, that another is being planned for during
the summer holidays, which will finish with a family picnic, so watch out for details as they arrive. We are extremely lucky at Cardea, as we grow in number, to find so many talented people; one of whom is photographer, Charlie Killick. Charlie took many pictures on the morning which really capture the community spirit and enthusiasm of the event. He also took many of the wonderful photos at Christmas, so if anyone is interested in contacting him with enquiries please feel free to do so via myself. It was great to see neighbours meeting up and chatting, and many
Kate Ferris (Cardea Residents’ Association) Photos by Charlie Killick
people expressed an interest in restarting the community meetings that we used to hold, so this will now be considered. While people enjoy Facebook to communicate notices and to raise concerns, for some, actual conversation and really meeting fellow residents is important, so we will try to hold quarterly coffee and chat type meetings again. The hardest part of this is finding a date and time that suits the majority so please let me know preferences. /MyCardeaUK E: Kaferris@icloud.com

The simple way to a lovely lawn If your lawn is tired, full of weed and moss, then don’t worry as help is on hand. Sisters Sarah and Jo who run the award winning Peterborough based GreenThumb lawn care business can soon get your lawn into great shape for summer. Here they answer some frequently asked questions. Is my lawn beyond repair? In most cases the answer is 'no' and even after our first visit you’ll notice a huge difference! How do I start with GreenThumb? It’s simple, just contact us to arrange a free, no obligation, lawn analysis. We’ll do a thorough health check of your lawn, measure it up and let you know the price options. Prices depend on your lawn size and start at just £15 per treatment for a lawn that’s 40 square metres or less - cheaper than DIY and completely hassle free!
Book your FREE lawn analysis now
How frequently do you treat my lawn? Our basic service provides four seasonal treatments designed to give you a beautiful lawn throughout the year. Three of these are through the grass growing season and consist of a granular fertiliser to feed the lawn and a selective herbicide to control the weeds. The fourth treatment is applied through the darker, damper months of autumn/ winter and this specifically tackles moss whilst also helping to strengthen the lawn. Many of our
customers also ask us to hollow-tine aerate and scarify their lawns annually and these mechanical treatments help to address the underlying causes of moss. How does the service work? It’s easy. We give you advance notice by phone, letter, email or text when we’re due to come but if the date isn’t convenient we can always change it. We’ve got three technicians, Jim, Richard and Dan who apply the treatments and all of us hold the National Proficiency Training Council (NPTC) licence for the safe use of pesticides. Do I have to be at home? The majority of customers aren’t at home when we call. We’re totally self-sufficient and will carry out the treatment as long as we have access to your lawns. Are the treatments safe for children? Yes. We do recommend however that children (and cats and dogs) are kept off the lawn for 1-2 hours to give any products that are applied time to dry.
If you’d like a lovely lawn, start by booking your FREE lawn analysis now and get expert help from GreenThumb. Contact Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028 or email them at peterborough@greenthumb.co.uk www.greenthumb.co.uk

Fabulous bluebell facts l Nearly 50% of the world’s bluebells can be found in the UK. l There are some in western Germany but none in Scandinavia. l The Victorians used starch from crushed bluebells to stiffen collars and sleeves. l Bluebell sap was used to bind pages to the spines of books. l Bees can 'steal' nectar from bluebells by biting a hole in the bottom of the bell. This allows them to reach the nectar without pollinating the flower.
Bluebells
The most welcome type of spring blues
There’s a shimmer of blue beckoning on the horizon, a dusky, delicate iridescent hue that in a couple of weeks’ time will be luring people into woods across the country.
Wildlife Trust woodlands in Cambridgeshire Brampton Wood Second largest woodland in the county, ancient woodland near Huntingdon with wild pears and dormice. Hayley Wood An ancient woodland with rich perfume and icy hue of bluebells, plus an active coppice cycle and a fantastic display of oxlips in spring. Hardwick Wood The Mere Way runs along the western boundary of this wood, the banks of the adjoining ditch providing a haven for cowslips and the rare crested cow-wheat. Thorpe Wood An ancient woodland full of wildflowers, an unexpected treasure in an urban setting. Waresley and Gransden Woods Fine ancient woodland, carpeted with oxlips, bluebells and violets in the spring.
E
ach spring as the soil warms up and trees come into leaf forming a shady canopy over ancient woodlands a magical wildflower spectacle unfurls below. A silent walk into cool shady woods is one of the deep joys of spring, sunlight sifting through the leaves highlighting swathes of violet-blue bluebells stretching as far as the eye can see, their strong, sweet scent permeating the air, bringing an enchanted feel to woodlands. These carpets of iridescent blue spread right across Cambridgeshire, the county is home to some of the best ancient bluebell woods in the UK - the WildlifeTrust’s Brampton Wood is 900 years old, with 326 acres (second largest in the county) to explore. The bluebell is a member of the lily family and has a clever way of surviving under the dense shade of woodland. The green leaves start to emerge early in the year, well before the leaves of the trees open. This means that the bluebell does most of its growing with plenty of
18 stanground gazette April 2017 www.stangroundgazette.co.uk
light and so replenishes the nutrients stored in its bulb. The flowering bit is really the end of the cycle and the leaves die away until the following year. Because bluebells spread very slowly they're considered to be an indicator of ancient woodland sites. Even if the trees are not very old, the fact there are bluebells around can indicate that there has been a wood on a site for a very long time. Even if there are no trees there at all, bluebells tell us that there was woodland there some time in the past. As well as the dazzling sea of blue to enjoy there are other spring-flowering beauties such as wood violet, primrose, honeysuckle and wood sorrel, with its small white flowers streaked with pink. Brian Eversham, Wildife Trust BCN CEO says: “Bluebell time coincides with the richest flush of local wildlife - masses of primroses and oxlips, golden celandines and the vibrant fresh green of new leaves everywhere and nesting birds singing at full volume. Get out to a Wildlife Trust woodland near you, and enjoy it!”

The Heron Meri will be hosting a fund raiser to raise money for charities treating Cystic Fibrosis. This is an inherited condition which affects the lungs and digestive system. The Heron will also be the base for the annual Peterborough Scooter Club Egg Run – which sees hundreds of scooters heading off delivering eggs around Peterborough.
This month has not only one but two Bank Holidays – happy days! It also includes Easter which allows me to legitimately eat lots of chocolate. April also brings St George's Day which I shall be celebrating with a pint or two, watching the brilliant and very amusing Bar Steward Sons of Val Doonican at Charters. The sun is shining and spring has truly sprung. This month we have fundraisers, beer festivals & scooter rides...

Gardening for
BEES in spring Now is the time of year to think about creating homes for our solitary bees. Hollow tubes are perfect for nesting solitary bees that use the holes as a nest site for their young. They lay eggs in the holes and then seal them up with a clump of chewed mud or a leaf
T
here are many solitary bee homes available in the shops, but sadly not all are effective. If buying a bee home, the key things to consider are that the depth of the nesting tubes must be at least 10cm and the diameter of the tubes should range between 6 and 10mm. Alternatively, now is the time to make your own, using old garden canes, string and a saw. Cut the bamboo canes into 10-20cm long pieces, then tie the canes together in a bundle to create your hotel.
Shop bought or home made hang the hotel in a sunny but sheltered part of your garden, at around 1.5m above the ground, as near to a south facing aspect as possible. On the side of a shed or on a wooden trellis is ideal. Watch and enjoy your bee hotel and remember solitary bees cannot sting. As the weather warms in spring, solitary bees will use the holes to nest, but it could take them a year to find it.

False eyelashes
health&beauty
why we love them so much!
False eyelashes, both extensions and stick on, are all the rage this year. Why get up and apply mascara every morning when you can get extensions and look flawless every day?
T
here are so many different types out there and there’s something to suit everyone. You can get false eyelash extensions in almost any salon in the UK now. Eyelash extensions cost a bit more than the ones that you stick on yourself, however they last a lot longer too, depending on how well you care for them. The two most common types of extensions are LVL (length, volume, lift) which are not actually extensions at all. The procedure includes tinting and perming your natural eyelashes to give them a fuller and longer effect. This method lasts between six and eight weeks if you take care of them properly. The procedure takes 45 minutes to one hour and costs around £45 – prices may vary though. Russian Volume lashes were created by a Russian lady, who created extra fine and delicate ‘mink’ lashes. But not to worry, they’re completely synthetic. The procedure consists of adding up to six
individual eyelashes on to your natural lashline, depending on how full you want them to look. The results last up to eight weeks if you take special care. The procedure can take up to two hours and can cost anywhere between £90 and £150, depending on where you go. If you don’t fancy the massive price tag of extensions or perms, try looking in your local supermarket or drugstore and have a look for stick on eyelashes. If you’re new to applying stick on eyelashes, don’t get mad if you can’t do it straight away as it does take a bit of time and practice to prefect the technique – watching youtube tutorials can help you. The top brand for stick on eyelashes is Eyelure. You can find them in Tesco, Boots, Superdrug, Morrisons and many other shops. They have the largest variety of eyelashes on the market, ranging from natural to full on voluminous. The best thing about them is that they cost a mere £5.95 in most places and they’re reusable!
