You’ve BIN asking - you’ve got them!
by Cllr Chris Harper Peterborough City Councillor for Stanground East. E: chris.harper@peterborough.gov.uk
Earlier this year, my pre-election questionnaire asked: “If more bins were to become available, where would you put them?” Many of you replied and four particular areas were highlighted as litter prone areas. It has to be remembered though that the costs involved are not just the actual cost of the bins but also the costs of adding them to be emptied under the Amey contract. I’d hoped to maybe get one or two. I’m very pleased to advise that I’ve now secured all four which will go at the following identified locations ...
• Park Farm Way/Whittlesey Road Footpath • Ellwood Avenue Bus Stop • Ellwood Avenue/Coneygree Road Junction (Fenman End) • Green Wheel at the bottom of Framlingham Road towards Horsey Toll Bridge. We’re still picking up a good bag full of litter on the regular fortnightly litter picks so hopefully these new bins will get plenty of use. I hope you’ve also noticed the ‘Clean It Up’ signs on the footpaths, the repairs of footpath cracks and the green wheel footpath/cycleway throughout
Southfields Primary litter pick A group of children from Southfields Primary School Community Cadets have been busy litter picking in the community. They were joined by Councillor Brian Rush and ‘Glutton’ the new Peterborough City Council battery powered vacuum litter picker. The children collected several bags of litter from the area around Glatton Drive, The Skate Park and Community

the ward and the cutting back of the shrubs on Park Farm Way as you enter from Whittlesey Road. Street signage will also be getting some attention soon. This along with the promised fence repairs around the Scott Close play area and at the bottom of Framlingham Road, the soon to come replacement NHW signs for Harlton Close and a couple of others, our ward is getting good spruce up for Christmas. There is still some money left in my Community Leadership Fund so please contact me if your group could do with some help with a capital investment from it.
HELPING TO KEEP THE LOCAL AREA CLEANER FOR EVERYONE E VERYONE
The Community Cadets feel that it is important that these areas remain tidy and safe so that parents will want to use these parking facilities and therefore keep traffic away from the school entrance.
WILDLIFE WATCH
Wildlife’s wintery ways Shaking off festive excess and making resolutions for the year ahead are often a high priority as a new year begins . . .
CARING ABOUT LOCAL WILDLIFE
F
resh air and exercise always help blow away seasonal cobwebs – and there are plenty of options on the doorstep for envigorating walks – and plenty of species to be observed. It’s a great time of year to see birdlife at local Wildlife Trust reserves (Stanground Wash, Woodston Ponds, Lattersey) from the grey camouflage plumage of a heron to the bright eyecatching glint of a kingfisher to ducks such as gadwall, wigeon and teal, plus waders such as redshank, snipe and sandpiper. Snipe (Gallinago gallinago) are mediumsized wading birds – secretive and highly camouflaged, they spend much of their time in the cover of the wet, rushy meadows and tall, tussocky grass in which they nest. They like to roost on muddy banks or islets of bare earth and use their long, probing bills to find insects, earthworms and crustaceans. During breeding season, the males can be heard making a unique ‘drumming’ sound as their tail feathers vibrate in the wind during rapid descents in flight displays. This behaviour usually starts mid-March as part of their courtship display flights, and this is when they’re more easily seen. The redshank (Tringa totanus) is a large sandpiper with long, bright red legs - typical waders, feeding in shallow water around marshes and mudflats. They breed on open marshes and often pose on a post, fence or rock in wet grassland or farmland areas. In flight redshank have a white triangular wedge
up the back and a wide white triangle on the rear; their bodies are brownish all over with a paler belly and they have a long, straight bill, red at the base and black at the end. It’s always exciting to see a vibrant kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) - the brilliant blue of the kingfisher’s back feathers are not pigment, but the result of light striking specially modified layers of feather cells. Few British kingfishers ever move more than 250km, though freezing weather can prompt them to move to the coast. The kingfisher doesn’t have a song, though it does have a distinctive flight call, a shrill whistle, and though fish form the main part of the diet, it also eats aquatic insects such as dragonfly nymphs and water beetles. When the male kingfisher wants to impress a female he offers her fish - and if the female accepts they form a bond and courtship begins. Awww. www.wildlifebcn.org/reserves-by-county

Café opening to help those living with dementia
Local community spotlight ... My Neighbourhood Watch Story
Thorpe Hall Hospice’s successful Synergy Café – for those living with dementia and their carers – is being extended into the community.
T
he café has already been running at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough for a year, offering activities, events, presentations and support to families affected by dementia. Now the team are expanding the service, adding another weekly Synergy Café to the calendar – this one to be held at the Sue Ryder Café on Whittlesey Road, in Stanground, Peterborough. Each Wednesday between 10am and midday staff and volunteers will organise games and quizzes and offer support and help to Synergy Café guests. Thorpe Hall’s day services manager Jo Hazell and Synergy Café facilitator Angie Exton will oversee the launch of the Café which opens its doors for the first time on January 6. Sue Ryder Café manager Wendy Duffy has undergone the Government-backed Dementia Friends training in readiness for the launch of the Synergy Café. She said: “It’s really important to us to be a part of the community in which we sit. We already have customers living with dementia, or caring for someone who is so we’re delighted that we’re able to offer them something aimed very specifically at helping them out. “There aren’t a lot of facilities for those living in Fenland who are living with these types of conditions so we’re hoping, because the Café is quite easy to get to from Whittlesey and Ramsey for instance, that we will become a go-to for those people too.” Please drop in to the Synergy Café at the Sue Ryder Café between 10am and midday on Wednesdays from January 6. There is no need to book. There is no fee. Drinks, snacks and light lunches can be brought from the Café.

My name is Toni Cray and I have been a part of NHW for 4 years now. Our local Cardea scheme has gone from strength to strength. “Being a part of the local NHW has empowered me to be more vigilant of my surroundings and alert others leading to a safer, more neighbourly and ultimately a secure community in which to live in”. Every 6 weeks we meet up and discuss any matters arising along with any current concerns/ issues. Issues can range from nuisance teens/car/house/shed/garage break ins – for example - an elderly couple were being picked on by a group of young kids who were throwing stones at their windows kicking their front door as well as constantly kicking the football at their window - we were informed - we went round to check on the elderly couple and we got their local co-ordinator Karl to check in on them and exchange numbers in case it happened again. The description of the youths was given
to 101 as well an email to the contact list members to make people aware in case they moved onto someone else. Subsequently the housing association were also informed as the youths were known to live on the estate. We now have a 100 plus contact list of Cardea residents who have joined our scheme, with sub co- ordinators for individual streets on our estate with the area coordinator Cllr Ray Bisby and I having the control of the whole contact list and more being added as our estate grows. Each time there is an issue, residents send an email or even a photo of the problem, then we assess if it warrants a circulation around the contacts so residents are aware. We always reiterate to members that they should ring 101 for non- urgent matters which require police involvement before they call us...
Anyone wanting to join or start up a scheme, feel free to contact me through the Peterborough Neighbourhood Watch Association on 0771 8969 159 or e mail iinfo@peterboroughnhw.co.uk. Leave your name and number and I’ll call you back. Alternatively if you live on the Cardea estate and would like to be added to our circulation list please email me at tetecray@gmail.com

Sharing the message of Jesus
Stanground round C of E Churches For the past month in our churches lots of us have been doing a special prayer where each evening we review the day that’s just gone past. This is how I do it: I ask Jesus to sit down on the sofa beside me and I light a candle as a sign of his light shining in my life and ask him to walk with me through the events of the day. What was I most thankful for? What made me happy and where did I find delight? As I recall, I thank God for these times. Was there anything that I was not grateful for, something that challenged or disturbed me or made me sad? I note these times, ask God to look at them with me and give me grace to handle them. Is there anything I could have done different? Was there something good I missed? Could I have said a kind word but was too busy or preoccupied? Then I ask Jesus to take all my thoughts and send his blessing and his peace. I think this would also work really well at New Year as a review of the year looking back at what has been and looking forward to what is to come. My prayer for Stanground is that we will all know more of God’’s presence and blessing in our lives as we start out into 2016. www.stangroundcofechurches.co.uk

Tax Returns 2015
With the deadline for completing and submitting self-assessment tax returns online is 31 January 2016, many of you may be struggling to get the job done. We have put together a list of helpful tips and advice to help make the task more bearable. Do I need to complete a tax return? Self-assessment is not just for self-employed people. If you fall under one of the following categories, you will need to complete a tax return too: ■ You are self-employed ■ You are a company director ■ Your annual income is £100,000 or more ■ You have income from letting any property or land you own ■ You receive other untaxed income, or significant capital gains, and the tax due on it cannot be collected through a PAYE tax code ■ You need to claim expenses or reliefs ■ You or your partner receive Child Benefit and your income is over £50,000 There are also other reasons, such as being a minister of religion, in receipt of trust or settlement income, have taxable foreign income or you are a trustee. When should I start the application process? Now! You can only apply online if you have already registered. If you haven’t done this yet, you should do it now. It can take up to seven working days for HMRC to send you an activation code by post. The deadline to submit your tax return is the 31 January, so you need to start the application as soon as possible. Am I better off completing my tax return online? Besides the fact you have missed the paper deadline, there are a number of benefits to completing your return online, such as automatic tax calculation and faster tax refund if you are due one, a submission reference and not having to rely on snail mail. I am a parent collecting Child Benefit. Why do I need to complete a form? Those who earn more than £50,000 a year and collect Child Benefit will have to complete a self-assessment return. Or we can complete your tax return for you!
Dates to remember 1 January 2016 – Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 31 March 2015. 19 January 2016 – Due date for PAYE and NIC deductions due for month ended 5 January 2016. (If you pay your tax electronically the due date is 22 January 2016.)
Stanground Gazette recently caught up with Cardea First Responders’ newest volunteer, Alex Burch, to find out about his work ... Q Prior to volunteering as a community first responder had you ever ␣ engaged in any emergency care or worked/volunteered in the medical field? A I have volunteered in various roles previously but never in medical ␣ or emergency care. This would be my first role in the emergency care field. Q What attracted you to the community first responder role? ␣ A To this day Cardea is still a growing community and when I moved ␣ in I wanted to contribute somehow to its growth through providing a way of supporting our community. My current 9 to 5 job role involves sitting in an office at a desk and I wanted to do something more physical, something practical/hands on. I decided to apply to the ambulance service, I didn’t think I would have what it takes but I wanted to try and when I realised you didn’t have to have previous medical or emergency care experience and that the ambulance would train you the knowledge and skills for the job I was over the moon. Q What did you enjoy most about the training ␣ A It was fun and very practical. It was interesting to learn new skills ␣ and how to apply them to real life situations. Part of the training process involved a 12 hour shift with the ambulance which was a real eye opener. But I knew from this moment I had made the right choice in applying as a CFR, I think it is good that you get to experience this as this way you know whether it’s right for you. Q What was it like to go out on your first shift alone ␣ ␣ A I’m not going to butter it up because that would be unfair, I was nervous! I am confident enough to say however that it went as well as

19 January 2016 – Filing deadline for the CIS300 monthly return for the month ended 5 January 2016. 19 January 2016 - Due date for CIS tax deducted for the month ended 5 January 2016. 31 January 2016 – Your balancing payment is due for the tax year ended 5 April 2015 and the first payment on account (if any is due) for the tax year ended 5 April 2016. COMMUNITY NEWS
otlight ... Alex Burch - Cardea First Responder it could and this is when everything really came together for me. I was able to appreciate and implement the training I had been given which was really supportive. The training helped me to settle in quite quickly after the first experience, I had confidence in myself. Q What have you learnt most about yourself since becoming a CFR? ␣ A How well I can stay calm in a stressful situation!! In my own life ␣ when it comes to my own work I get easily stressed about things; however in this role I manage to focus and it’s like I am stepping out my life and into another’s where I know I can be calm. Which works really well. Q What has been the most rewarding aspect? ␣ A Meeting new people and being able to help members of our local ␣ community. Being part of a supportive network of individuals with the east of ambulance team. Q What has been the most challenging aspect to your role? ␣ A Seeing people in pain or worried about a loved one. All I imagine ␣ when this happens is if this was my family how would I want them to be treated and I am not only there to provide assistance through heart monitoring, oxygen levels and dressing wounds; I am also there as someone to talk to and to help relieve the anxiety as much as I can, before the ambulance arrive. Q How do you feel the community has responded to the voluntary ␣ assistance? A Really well! Although there is sometimes confusion in thinking ␣ we are paramedics when we arrive first on scene, so we make it clear who we are, our role has always been welcomed, and the public are just grateful to have an individual available swiftly who can attend to immediate emergency care and reassure them on the situation. We have previously been out to local schools and ran fundraising events in the community letting many local people
know who we are. Maybe we will do more of these talks so that the community and become even more familiar. Q How do you feel the ambulance crew has taken to the extra ␣ hands-on help? A Most of the crews are grateful for our assistance and also allow us ␣ to carry on with assisting because we have become a familiar face for the individual. However on occasions when the ambulance turn up at the same time or before us they are happy to proceed alone. Either way we are just glad the individual is receiving the best care and someone is with them. Q What difference do you feel the support of the community first ␣ responders have made to the local community? A A few community members have commented on what a brilliant ␣ job we do. When we are first on scene we realise what a difference we do make in providing emergency care and reassurance for the individual. Q How many hours on average a week do you have to do as a CFR? ␣ A 4 hours a week minimum, but of course you can log on and do as ␣ many hours as you like. We are provided with a phone and we are contacted when a call comes in and can dispatch immediately to the scene. If you are interested in joining the Cardea First Response team covering the Cardea Stanground and Fletton area then get in touch by emailing cardearesponders@gmail.com

Cooking up success!
The Stanground Academy took part in this year’s Young Chef Competition run by Rotary Great Britain & Ireland.
T
he organisation is run predominately by volunteers, offering young people the chance to develop personal skills and create a better awareness of the problems that face the world today. The competition was held at Nene Park Academy on Thursday 26 November 2015 and had a number of entrants from schools across the city of Peterborough. The quality of the food produced was of a very high standard and the competition was very tight but student Sophie Styles-Hudson in year 9 won the competition with her home-made Pancetta Tagliatelle and Black Forest Gateau Trifle. She will now go through to the regional final at Hinchingbrooke School in Huntingdon in January 2016. Principal James Scarrott said: “This is another example of the high quality extra-curricular opportunities available to Stanground Academy students. Activities such as this allow our student to develop new talents, improve confidence and above all have fun. I am grateful to the staff involved for their hard work and commitment to the innovative project.

The Academy is also very pleased to be hosting again this year the Young Designer Competition. This is an oppo rtunity for all of the students studying GCSE/ AS-level desig n and technology based courses to enter their coursework into the competition. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU
NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS AND STICKING TO THEM! Did you know that people have been making (and breaking) New Year’s Resolutions for more than 4,000 years? By Kate Duggan
ck! u l d Goo
Some historians believe that the practice dates back to the Babylonians. Their New Year began in springtime, with a festival dedicated to the rebirth of the sun god, Marduk. The Babylonians believed that making promises to the gods would help them start their New Year off on a positive note. The Romans kept the tradition up, although they changed the date of the New Year to January 1st. These days, New Year’s Resolutions tend to focus on self-improvement, whether it’s eating healthier, quitting smoking, or getting a new job. Millions of us make a resolution each year, but only 1 in 10 people stick to it. If your resolve is already wavering, here are a few tips to help you stay strong: Write it down. Writing down a goal and reviewing it regularly improves your chances of success by up to 95%! Involve other people. Tell people what your aim is, and ask them to help. Will your partner join you on your healthy eating mission? Do you know someone who fancies going jogging with you? Have a plan - A goal isn’t enough; you need to know how you’re going to get there. Resolving to exercise more? How many times a week are you going to work out? What combination of exercise are
24HR EMERGENCY
you planning to do? Do you need to get anything in place to help you achieve your goal, such as a new tyre for your bike? Break your goal into smaller ones So you want to lose two stone by your summer holiday. How many pounds do you want to lose this fortnight? Remind yourself why you’re doing it - Do you want to make more money so that you can buy a house? Do you want to be healthier so that you can watch your kids grow up? Make it pleasurable - There are usually more ways than one to reach a goal. You don’t have to join a gym to get fit, for example; you could take up a dance class, or try karate. Keep track of your progress - Create a spreadsheet, download an app, or just celebrate each small success on Facebook. Give yourself rewards along the way Save the money you’d normally spend on cigarettes or chocolate and treat yourself with it at each small milestone. Get back on the wagon - We’re only human, so we all slip up sometimes. One fry-up doesn’t mean you also have to skip the gym. Think about why you slipped and consider how you can stop it happening again.

NEWYEAR, YEAR,NEW NEWYOU YOU NEW
LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICNE Global Belly Laugh Day takes place on 24 January. Its aim is to celebrate the gift of laughter. By Susan Brookes-Morris Whilst there are many different languages spoken throughout the world, laughter can be said to be a universal language. It also has no boundaries: it happens somewhere 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and across all continents. The day was created by LaughterYoga Teacher Elaine Helle in 2005. She says it’s a chance to celebrate with the people in your life past and present, who laugh with you and help you laugh and smile... and also to remember the strange, funny, ‘now I can laugh at it’ moments. One of the main features of the day is the Belly Laugh, Bounce Around The World. All are encouraged to smile, throw their arms in the air and laugh out loud at 1:24pm local time so as to literally send laughter around the world. Laughing is of course mostly about having fun, but there are health benefits too. Research shows that a good laugh can: lower blood
pressure, boost our immune system, reduce some stress hormones, increase vascular blood flow and oxygenation of the blood, provide a work out for the diaphragm, abdomen, respiratory system, legs, face and back and increase alertness, creativity, memory, learning and our positive emotions. Even so-called fake laughter can bring these health benefits and this is the principle on which laughter yoga relies. Plus of course many of us find that laughter is infectious and laughter yoga usually takes place in groups to make the most of this. The Global Belly Laugh Day symbol consists of a smiling sun with 7 rays and 1 and 24 dimples. So on Global Belly Laugh Day and every space day ‘have a laugh.’ If you are struggling to find inspiration, why not look through some old photos, watch a funny film or wear some crazy clothes - laugh and the world laughs with you, and its free!

The laughing oath was written by Diana Loomans and Karen Kolberg, it reads: I do solemnly swear from this day forward, to grease my giggling gears each day and to wear a grin on my face for no reason at all!I promise to tap my funny bone often, with children, family, friends, colleagues and clients, and to laugh at least fifteen times per day. I believe that frequent belly laughter cures terminal tightness, cerebral stiffness, and hardening of the attitudes, and that HA HA often leads to AHA! Therefore, I vow, from this day forth, to brighten the day of everyone I meet, and to laugh long and prosper.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU HEALTHY RECIPE
Bean and Rice Burritos Ingredients • 150g dried long-grain rice • 400g can red kidney beans in chilli sauce • 400g can mixed pulses in water, rinsed and drained • 2 tbsp tomato purée • 1 tomato, finely chopped • ½ red onion, finely chopped • ¼ cucumber, deseeded and diced • 125g fat free natural Greek yogurt, to serve • Lime wedges, to serve
© Slimming World/Gareth Morgans
For the wraps: • 10 large eggs • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • Small handful of finely chopped fresh parsley • Low calorie cooking spray
Method: Cook the rice according to the packet instructions then drain and keep warm. Meanwhile, make the wraps. Crack the eggs into a large measuring jug, whisk until smooth and season with a pinch of salt. Stir in the parsley. Spray a small non-stick frying pan with low calorie cooking spray and place over a high heat. When hot, pour in one-eighth of the egg mixture (or enough to just cover the bottom of the pan), tilting the pan to spread the egg around. Cook for 1-2 minutes or until lightly browned underneath then flip over and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Transfer the wrap to a baking sheet lined with baking parchment, cover with another sheet of parchment and keep warm. Spray the pan again with low calorie cooking spray and make another seven wraps in the same way, adding each cooked wrap to the pile. Heat a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat, add the kidney beans, pulses and tomato purée and warm through for 3-5 minutes. Remove from the heat and season to taste. Stir the beans into the rice and divide between the egg wraps. Scatter over the tomato, red onion and cucumber, and roll up loosely (you might need to hold the wraps in place with cocktail sticks). Serve hot with fat free natural Greek yogurt and lime wedges to squeeze over.

AWARDS
Polished performance wins Elaine a Bronze award A weight-loss expert from Stanground has won a brilliant bronze award for the exceptional work she does in helping nearly 60 people in the area to lose weight every week.
E
laine Dove, who runs the Stanground Slimming World groups has been given the ‘Bronze’ status by the national slimming club because of her success in supporting local slimmers to reach their dream weights, improve their health and change their lives. The accolade is awarded to Slimming World Consultants who successfully build a vibrant and dynamic group of around 50 members, and when the service they provide is so good that members keep coming week after week because they’re losing weight beautifully and wouldn’t miss their weekly group for anything. It’s the 3rd time Elaine has been awarded the prize since becoming a Consultant in October 2012. Recently her evening group was awarded a Pearl award for an outstanding 90% retention of members attending and losing phenomenal weight losses! She says: “I am delighted to have received the ‘Bronze’ award for the first time on behalf of the Stanground Friday morning group, which opened its doors one year ago! I feel passionately about helping people to transform their lives by losing weight in
the same way that I did when I lost 3st with Slimming World in 2012. Losing weight made me feel happier and healthier and gave me so much more confidence. I became a Consultant because I wanted to share that feeling and help other people to achieve the same success I had myself. Seeing the members in my groups mums, dads, grandmas and young people too – reach their target weight is so rewarding and receiving this award is just the icing on the cake. “This award belongs to the Friday morning group’s 60 members. They’re the ones who make the group the success that it is with their fabulous commitment, the wonderful support they give each other every week, and, obviously, their impressive weight losses while following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan. “The Friday morning group has really put healthy weight loss on the map in Stanground since opening, Together, they’ve lost more then 180 stone in its first year, which is the equivalent of a large Polar Bear or Canadian brown Bear! One lady has lost over 6 stone since joining! That is amazing! Especially
with obesity at its record levels everywhere lots of people are suffering a range of weight-related health problems from diabetes to heart problems and feelings of low self-worth that impact on their working and personal lives every day. So anything that helps people to lose weight by adopting healthy eating habits and becoming more active is making a difference – both to themselves and future generations of children, too.” If Elaine continues her success, she could be in the running for a ‘Silver’ or even ‘Gold’ award, she says: “I’m over the moon to have become a Bronze Consultant and now I’m going for Gold, although I feel like I’ve already struck gold – I have a healthy figure, a fabulous job that I absolutely love and hundreds of great friends in the members. I’m very lucky and I truly believe I have the best job in the world.”
To join the Stanground groups, which are held every Thursday evening at 5.30pm & 7.30pm and Friday morning 9.30am at Stanground Community Centre Whittlesey Road, either pop along or give Elaine a call on 01733 346699 or 07729689552

HEALTHY RECIPE
Warming, nutritious and surprisingly filling, this soup is the perfect meal to come home to after a brisk winter’s walk.
Red Lentil and Caramelised Onion Soup High fibre lentils promote heart health, lower cholesterol, provide vegetable protein, stabilise blood sugar, and are rich in iron and B vitamins. We love combining these earthy gems with the deep, roasty, slightly sweet flavour of caramelised onion.
Method Heat a medium-sized saucepan over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. When it dances, add the shallots, garlic, carrots, turmeric and cinnamon. Cook until the shallots soften and the mixture becomes aromatic, about 3-5 minutes. This soup will gently warm your stomach and keep you satisfied. It’s an American recipe so uses Add the beetroot and vegetable broth and bring the mixture to a boil. Add the lentils cup measurements. An American measuring and reduce the heat to a simmer. If the onions start 2 beetroot (yellow ideally), peeled and diced sticking to the sides of the pan, add a little 6 cups vegetable broth/stock water. FOOD & DRINK Many people intend to start the new year off with a diet – it is possible to diet and still go to the pub, just by choosing carefully what you consume – vodka or gin with diet mixers and tonic’s are very low in calories compared to pints and you can swop out things like salted crisps to healthier options such as Quavers or French Fries to save on fat and calories. Many pubs also have sports teams which you can join.
The Heron
You might have been aware that The Heron has had some planning permission hanging over the pub for some time. Planning Permission has been awarded to Meri’s Landlord for the land, however, he has given them a notice stating that he has received planning permission for the demolition of The Heron and erection of 8 houses, but that he and the Stanton Trust have NO INTENTION of implementing this planning permission for many years. The landlord went on to say that “Meri & Rob have done a great job in making The Heron a desirable venue, and we will let them stay for the full term of their lease. The expiry is 31st July 2019, but there is always the possibility of a renewal.” Phew! Meri says that the past 12 months have been a whirlwind experience! Local support for the bands that they have hosted has been fantastic. The Beer Festivals they held in both the Spring and Autumn were very well attended, and their Halloween Spectacular was spectacular! Well done Stanground folk – keep up the good work! The Heron teams have done us proud so far this season with Stanground Sports FC consistently playing well, with both pool teams climbing the league and The Heron Monday night Darts Team have been promoted this season. If anyone is interested in a Wednesday night league or a Women’s Team please contact the pub on 01733 704693. Could this be a new activity for you in 2016? The Heron will be hosting a Burns Night Celebration on Monday 25 January with all welcome. They currently don’t have any bands planned for January but will host their first large event in 2016 – called The Sounds of Our Streets, which is free for all, on Saturday 6 February 2016!

Book reviews by Willow Coby
Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
ADULT Praise for this novel, first published at the beginning of 2015, has spread like wildfire and it has become THE book to read. So just in case you are one of the few that hasn’t succumbed to this thriller, why should you pick it up? Whether you are a regular commuter, like the central character Rachel, or not, you will easily be able to identify with the opening section. How many times have you sat on a train and looked out of the window into the garden or kitchen windows of the houses that back onto the tracks, as you speed past on your way to your final destination. As you catch glimpses into a life that you don’t know, do you wonder about the people that occupy those houses? Rachel doesn’t have to wonder. She passes familiar houses every day and purposefully looks for Jess and Jason, a young professional couple who live a perfect life. She knows them and is in many ways envious of their relationship. Seeing them in their garden is a moment of comfort as her own life is falling apart. But is all as it seems? On one day, as the train slows down at a signal by the house, Rachel notices that something is amiss. Suddenly she is sucked into a nightmare that seems destined to reveal everything, and that will shock you as her commuter journey turns out to be anything but normal. It’s a small world, but when that world comes crashing down around you, it becomes all too clear that this small world is a lot smaller than you first thought.

Midnight for Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo
AGE 8+
It is now nearly a decade since the last Harry Potter book was published, and a new generation are quite rightly discovering this wonderful world of wizards and magic. Just like the generation before them, they are left with a void after reading them all, and so where do they turn? The Charlie Bone series of books may well be just what they are looking for. Published in 2002, Midnight for Charlie Bone is the first of this eight book series. Charlie is a fairly normal 10 year old boy. His father died when he was little, and he lives with his mum and two grandmas, and hangs out with his best friend Ben. One Friday Charlie hears voices coming from a photograph, and then his whole life changes. He learns that his three unmarried great-aunts, known as the Yewbeams, are going to fund his education and a private school called Bloor’s Academy. Charlie is not happy about this: he knows the school to be a stuffy place for geniuses, and he certainly won’t fit in there. But the Yewbeams are insistent: and besides, they pay for his mum’s living expenses and so he really has no choice. They explain to Charlie that he is ‘endowed’ and can read the minds of people in photographs. Everyone at Bloor’s Academy has a talent. Charlie’s father went there and he was a musician. But what is Charlie’s talent? Placed in the music department at Bloor’s, despite having no musical talent, it becomes clear that there is another group of children at the school who are all endowed with some mystical magical talent. Soon he finds that he was born into a world he never knew existed.

PETS’ PATCH
A weighty question
Veterinary advice from your local
It’s that time of year when many of us are hitting the gym or trying the latest celebrity diet to shift a few pounds before the summer sun arrives. But have you looked at your pet/s body shape with the same clinical eye?
J
ust like us, being overweight can have serious health issues for your pet and affect their quality of life. However it’s not always obvious to us that our pet is actually overweight and pets slowing down is often put down to them simply growing older, rather than a symptom of extra weight causing strain on joints and muscles. Owners are often very surprised, yet overjoyed to see an overweight pet gain a new lease of life and start displaying puppy or kitten characteristics once they have lost weight.
Is my pet overweight? Compare your pet’s body shape to the illustrations here or pop into any of our Vets to use our walk on dog scales for weighing pets and to review the breed weight chart as a guide to what a healthy weight range might be. If you’d prefer some one on one attention, why not book an appointment with our nurse for the weight clinic, they will be happy to give you lots of advice, set healthy goals for your pet and help you to plan how these can be achieved.
Our Free Weight Clinic Appointments Include: Pet history and lifestyle assessment Body scoring and assessment of goal weight Action plan of how to reach goal weight Food, Meal Sizes & Frequency Rewards, Toys & Treats Activity, Exercise & Play We aim to assist you in helping your pet to lose weight at a healthy and controlled rate of around 1-3% per week. This is accomplished through changes in diet, portion control, non food related rewards, plus a plan for exercise that suits your lifestyle. For example, you wouldn’t walk a cat and not all dogs are willing to go out in the rain, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have physical activity inside (without leaving a trail of destruction) Distract your pet away from having less food by giving it to them via a dispensing toy, their food will take longer to eat as they have to figure out how to get at it In multi pet households it maybe useful to feed pets separately and/or not leave food down for grazing.
Note. If your pet has not been seen by a Vet at our practice within the last six months we may request a health check consultation with a Vet prior to a weight clinic appointment.

Peterborough Dementia Resource Centre open day Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Resource Centre for Peterborough is opening its doors on Saturday 16th January 2016 to give free advice to anyone with questions about dementia.
Keeping your divorce stress free and simple If you have decided your marriage is over you will most probably want to make the whole process of divorce as painless as possible. So what is the secret? Firstly, don’t only take advice from your friends and family, seek professional advice from a family lawyer committed to resolving disputes in a non-confrontational way. Listen to the professional advice given to you and try to act upon it. Always negotiate before you litigate. Compromise is the essence of any agreement. Inevitably there will be disagreements with your spouse but try to keep emotions under control and avoid verbal abuse and threats. This will simply lead to them becoming difficult and inflexible. You do not want a war. Try to avoid involving the children or using them as a pawn. They are innocent in this situation and they will need the love and support of both parents. You may have been thinking about a divorce for years whereas your partner may only have received the news a matter of weeks ago. You might have to slow down for a while, be patient, and wait until they are ready to discuss matters. Consider all the options available to resolve matters, such as solicitor negotiation, mediation and only consider court proceedings as a last resort. Staff will be on hand from 10am – 1pm to offer information, support and advice. The Alzheimer’s Society team are particularly keen to welcome carers who are unable to access our services during normal office hours; anyone who would like to know more about dementia and would like to find out about the services provided at the Dementia Resource Centre. Kevin Bowyer, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager for Peterborough, said: “We really hope that people can come along to our Open Day to find out about the services we provide for people affected by dementia. Two thirds of people with dementia live in the community yet far too many people with the condition are left feeling isolated and lonely and unable to access vital services. This Saturday opening could be a chance for people who are usually at work to access and seek information on services available to them.” The Dementia Resource Centre is a one-stop service for advice, information and support, ensuring people living with dementia and their carers in Peterborough are able to get the help they need in everyday life. If would like any further information regarding the open day please call the Dementia Resource Centre on 01733 893853. The charity is also looking for volunteers locally – for more information please call Debbie Holmes on 01733 893853.

Property Report
2015 was a successful year for the local property market. Many local families took the opportunity to move up the property chain, having been previously denied this choice since 2008. Locally, the agents in Peterborough were asked to advertise 575* properties in Stanground, agreeing 244 property sales from these instructions. The interesting thing is that 49% of the properties sold in 2015 in Stanground are sold between £150,000 - £250,000, showing the demand for family homes is continually growing. *statistics correct as of November 2015
In 2015 we saw property prices increase by 4.2% in the greater Peterborough area. This was a welcome change to the growth rates of the last 7 years. In 2016 we expect this to continue with further predicted price increases of up to 6%. This does then create a buyers market as we are currently seeing record low interest rates and an easing of available credit. So what does this mean if you are looking to sell your property in 2016? Once you’ve decided to sell your house, success isn’t guaranteed! How do you make sure that your property is in the 2 of the 5 sold in Stanground? How do you improve this statistic? How do you make sure your property is viewed by the right buyers in a competitive marketplace? Here at Tortoise Property, we have successfully introduced professional photography, video tours & targeted social media marketing into the marketplace. This has meant we have sold 3 in every 4 houses we brought to market in 2015 while also achieving an average sale price of over 99% of all the properties we listed in 2015. **Statistics collated from Land Registry, Rightmove & ThisisMoney.

Cosmic Katie‘ s Stars COMMUNITY NEWS
January 2016
By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer
Pisces February 20-March 20
Do your best to travel and experience new things by the 26th. Opportunities grabbed and contacts made by then, will have a profound impact on how the rest of your year pans out. A friendship may be brought into question, especially if loyalty or trust is compromised.
Aries March 21-April 20 Travel plans loom large as the new year begins, you’re ahead of the game and will have arrangements made, possibly even for the year ahead. A change of career or promotion may feel somewhat daunting, but you never get anywhere if you always do the same thing.
Taurus April 21-May21
Venus and Mars connect strongly with your sign as the year begins, so be a little more romantic and let yourself sizzle. Mercury in retrograde will cause delays between the 5th-25th so have alternative plans at the ready. Avoid lending money, as it’s unlikely that you’ll see it again.
Gemini May 22-June 22 Home making will feature heavily from the 8th, whether that’s redecorating, moving or setting up home with a loved one; either way, your keen eye for detail and natural flair will have it looking fabulous in no time. Romance and intimacy looks well placed from the 17th.

Cancer June 23-July 23 Travel and overseas plans will dominate from the 12th. If you are yearning for romance and and a stronger connection with someone close, maybe it’s time to stop trying so hard, peoples actions and words speak volumes about them and little about you; time will reveal all.
Leo July 24-August 23
It’s a high pressured month and you may find yourself overwhelmed by a hectic schedule and an increasingly long to-do list. Keep focussed and stay as calm as possible. A family member may need to eat a large dose of humble pie; you may be the forgiving type, but you certainly don’t forget.
Libra September 24-October 23 Finances will focus your attention this month and you could find yourself having to alter your plans accordingly, particularly if you overspent during the festive season. You’ll be in the limelight from the 19th, this is a great time to explore a new possibility, romantically or professionally.
Scorpio October 24-November 22 Mars, the planet of action, is in your sign from the 3rd, making you active, assertive, determined and great fun to be around. Your social life hits a new high from the 16th, just pace yourself to avoid burnout. Venus ramps up the passion stakes from the 20th, have fun.
Sagittarius November 23-December 21 You may be anxious to change or improve your circumstances either romantically, professionally, or your wellbeing. It’s not enough to just ‘want’ this change to occur, you must wholeheartedly apply yourself, be assertive and commit to making that shift happen. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Saturday Coffee Morning 10.30am. Church Hall, Mace Road. Friendly & informal. All welcome. Prize Bingo 7pm Church Hall, Mace Road. New people always welcome.
Capricorn December 22-January 20 The focus is on long term goals this month and you will have a fierce plan of action in place in order to achieve them. A surprise call or email from a former love interest will make you stop and think; but forget about going backwards, there’s nothing for you to gain. Aquarius January 21-February 19 The year begins with a resolution on your part to have greater success in your career. Mercury is retrograde until the 25th so delays are inevitable, but be patient, it will be worth the wait. Make your feelings clear romantically, you may have to spell things out to avoid confusion.
If your birthday is this month This is a month of great change and the chance for new beginnings. The 10th heralds the start of this new chapter, only take people or situations you are happy with on this journey with you, there isn’t space for time wasters.

John Cranston of Cranston Plastering “Since becoming a member of Safe Local Trades, my business has continually reaped the benefits of membership. In addition to the new clients I have acquired as a direct result, my level of repeat custom has increased and I would solely survive on just working for Safe Local Trades customers, if I could. Becoming a member has been the best thing I have done since branching out on my own. Thank you for all the hard work and effort you put into both member and customer services.” Mr B Hill, Whittlesey “I have used several members from Safe Local Trades and I have been extremely pleased with the results and the service provided by them. I think this is an excellent scheme, as there are so many cowboys and rogues out there; it is a great way to source reputable trustworthy tradespeople. Thank you.”

Security Alert! How can we protect ourselves against fraud?
T
hese days we are required to use so many PINS and passwords that many people choose something simple to remember, such as their child’s name or date of birth. Fraudsters know this and in their hands such information becomes a valuable tool. But how do they get hold of such information? Careless talk How many of us publish personal details on Facebook and other networking sites? We announce our favourite books, films; the names of our children and our pets for all to see. Can you keep a secret? In a research study carried out for the Infosecurity Europe trade show, four out of five subjects questioned happily handed over the user name and password for their work PC to those carrying out the research. More surprising, were many of those who would not initially reveal their passwords did so after being bribed with chocolate! Gone Phishing NEVER click on links in unsolicited emails purporting to

be from your bank or building society. If in doubt phone them first. Proper Passwords The best passwords are a completely random mix of characters and letters. Fraudsters have a hard time guessing them, even when they use dedicated software. Security experts suggest that we use a separate password for each account we possess. But given that most of us have trouble remembering two or three passwords, you can see the problem with this approach. Fortunately, there are password managers available for under £30 which remember your various passwords and PINS but encrypt them to make them useless to anyone else. If you want the very latest in security technology, you can purchase a fingerprint reader for around £100 or an iris scanner for under £300. Most importantly, make sure you keep your PCs security software updated. And beware people with clipboards offering chocolate!
