Black swan spotted locally This beautiful, black swan has been spotted in Stanground over the past few weeks around the Stangroud train bridge area. Native to Australia, black swans were originally brought to the UK as ornamental birds. Like many other captive birds, they occasionally find their way out into the wild. Because they are more aggressive than other species, some fear they may compete with white swans for food and habitat. Black swans are also thought to be more aggressive to humans than other species. Although still unusual to see a black swan in the UK they are becoming more common. It’s predicted that approximately 300 black swans now live in the UK and this has increased over the past 10 years due to their successful breeding.
93,579 trees planted through Forest for Peterborough project The independent charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) is celebrating another successful planting season with the Forest for Peterborough project, which culminated in a fantastic ‘tree giveaway’ for residents in Stanground on Saturday 26 March. “We are so grateful for the support of our volunteers and the hard work they put in to improve the local environment for the benefit of residents and wildlife – none of this could have been achieved without them. A special thank you goes to the Mick George Community Fund for funding the project this year, plus extra support was received from IKEA Distribution and Buckles Solicitors.” The Forest for Peterborough project was launched in 2010, and it aims to plant over 180,000 trees by 2030, which is one tree for every person living in Peterborough. In an area where tree coverage is below the national average, the project aims to create a network of wooded areas to improve our green spaces.
The independent charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) is delighted to announce that it’s annual Green Festival is back – bigger and better than ever before! This year the event is heating up, moving to a new summertime date of Saturday 13 August, with fringe events running through to 21August. In addition to this, the charity is thrilled to announce that the Festival has been awarded Arts Council funding for a threeyear period, bringing a fantastic £73,500 funding into the city. This funding will be used to commission artists to create innovative artworks for the Festival – whether its street theatre, visual art or spoken word – to promote sustainable living and encourage people to take positive actions for their local and global environment. The 2016 Festival has been sponsored by Travelchoice, which will also allow sustainable transport to be highlighted in exciting and thought-provoking ways. Bringing together attractions, community groups, charities and businesses, the Green Festival celebrates everything ‘green’ in Peterborough with a wide variety of events and activities running, offering plenty of free fun for the whole family.
For more information and to be kept up to date on the latest event details visit: www.pect.org.uk. Join in the conservation online @SustainableCity with #PECTGreenFest.
Call-out for Green Festival artists Peterborough Environment City Trust is looking to commission six artists (open to all disciplines) to create new works for the annual Green Festival. The artists will work alongside the charity and an Artistic Producer to create works which will form part of the Green Festival launch day on Saturday 13 August 2016 and the rest of the Festival week. The Festival encourages visitors to discover how to live more sustainably and to develop long-term behaviour change. Areas of focus include everything from sustainable transport, recycling, locally and sustainably produced food, and nature and biodiversity. PECT is seeking proposals from emerging and established creative practitioners who are principally interested in developing an engaging piece of work that captures the public’s imagination. Deadline for applications is Wednesday 16 March 2016. For more information visit the website at www.pect.org.uk.

fter an Easter break, we’re back in full swing here, with thoughts turning towards planning summer events and holidays. You can’t help to notice the building works going on in Cardea as our Community Pavilion nears completion. Development is also beginning on ‘the other side”’... Cardea is certainly a different place now than when we moved here in 2011! We are all happy to see our walkways and green areas being finished off and the addition of benches and litter bins is helping to create a community feel. Speaking of bins, we are also very happy to report that the developer now empties these, so the Residents’ Association is no longer responsible for this time consuming task. Cardea Youth Club continues to grow, now with over 40 members and we have been overwhelmed by the positive response and the wonderful feedback from parents, thank you all. We met on Good Friday and

Kate Ferris on behalf of Cardea Residents’ Association all the youth club members took home an Easter egg as a gift from Cardea Residents’ Association. It has certainly reinforced our belief that our young people need their own place and time to just be teenagers. The youth club provides a safe environment for them to do just this, but with the added security of dedicated leaders on hand to give parents peace of mind that their kids can have a Friday night out with their mates without worry. We will meet on 22 April, 6 & 20 May, 17 June, 1 & 15July so put the dates in your diaries. We are still looking for guests to come in and show the kids new skills, hobbies , sports etc., so if you have something that teenagers would be interested in please get in touch. As mentioned earlier the Community Pavilion is nearing completion and there will be a grand opening weekend in July where all Cardea groups will take part, the youth club will be holding a tombola stall and we are asking

My father, with his butchers shop in Church Street, could only sell certain amounts of meat according to what his customers’ ration books allowed. But I know my father tried to give larger families that little bit extra where he could. There was one house in Stanground where fourteen children lived. Try to imagine fourteen children on food rationing which would continue throughout the war and for some time after. Petrol was also rationed but my father had to deliver joints of meat to his customers who lived in the county areas around Stanground. He was allowed to

use his butcher’s van but with only a limited amount of petrol available to him, this was very hard and journeys had to be very well planned. The young men in Stanground were being called up for the war and this included my 18 year old brother, Tony. Some were required to make the ultimate sacrifice by losing their lives and would never return home. Every young boy growing up in Stanground would have heard of Hitler’s name - the tyrant, with his funny moustache and jackboots - being the cause of the war. But we had Winston Churchill, whose rousing wartime speeches would lift the nation. What an inspirational figure he was and

who would ever forget when he said “we will fight them on the beaches and we will never surrender”. Would we have defeated Germany without Churchill? I am not so sure. His bulldog spirit was more than Hitler bargained for. What the war did bring to Stanground was a wonderful comradeship, with people being helpful and friendly everywhere. It’s still very clear in my memory seeing scores of neighbours sitting on front door steps on hot summer evenings chatting away to anyone who passed their door. The friendliness was overwhelming and brought the whole community together as never before. It was truly amazing!

Neighbourhood Watch Scheme
Safe Local Trades teams up with Cardea community to promote Neighbourhood Watch Scheme
T
hey say that everybody needs good neighbours – and that certainly seems to be the case for the Cardea community in Stanground. More than 30 years after the UK’s first Neighbourhood Watch scheme was established, the initiative aimed at developing close liaison between households in a neighbourhood, the local police and the local authority is going from strength to strength. The aim of NHW is to help people protect themselves and their properties, to reduce the fear of crime and improve their local environment. It has been proven that areas which operate a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme are less likely to be targeted by crime, rogue traders and distraction burglars. There are many advantages associated with being part of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme; including a sense of greater contentment and security amongst participants and a feeling of being involved in the community - bringing back the community spirit and giving you peace of mind. Safe Local Trades, covering the PE Postcode area, has worked with many local neighbourhood watch groups over the years – providing numerous lamp-post signs as well as giving free
talks on the dangers of doorstep callers. Our latest collaboration has been with the Stanground community, where SLT has been delighted to offer 20 free signs to the Cardea Neighbourhood Watch. Eileen Le Voi, owner of Safe Local Trades, is also on the board of the Peterborough Neighbourhood Watch scheme. She said: “It has been a pleasure to donate these signs to a community which cares about each other and the safety and security of their homes and surroundings.” Councillor Ray Bisby, chair of the Cardea Neighbourhood Watch, was recently presented with the signs by Eileen (pictured with other NHW members). He said: “Eileen and Safe Local Trades have always been supportive of the Peterborough community and this donation is a fantastic gift. “The signs will be placed around Cardea. Thank you Eileen and I don’t have any hesitation in recommending Safe Local Trades to anyone who requires any work on their homes. The tradespeople are all very professional and police checked.” With over 4 million members, Neighbourhood Watch is the largest voluntary organisation in the country. Established in 1982, it is free to join and open to everyone.
If you live in the PE Postcode area and would like to inquire about obtaining free Neighbourhood Watch lamp-post signs, please email eileen@safelocaltrades.com or for advice visit http://bit.ly/1Sg74QN

by Mark Laws Chancellor George Osborne recently announced a special tax-free allowances for people making money from the internet. Selling on the Web: Traders from 6 April 2016 can now earn £1,000 free of tax from selling via auction and selling websites, such as eBay and Gumtree. If you make money from the internet, flogging goods stacked up in your garage, for instance, or renting out the garage itself, then that money can be taxable. That’s if you are working as a trader. Are you a micro-entrepreneur (as Mr Osborne calls it), selling services online or renting out all or part of your home? The first £1,000 of income from your online sales will be tax free, although you won’t be able to take off your running expenses before calculating the total. Micro-entrepreneurs only have to declare income above the £1,000 threshold for tax purposes. Accommodation: When it comes to renting out furnished accommodation - as many people are doing by using sites including Airbnb and Ownersdirect there is already a Rent a Room scheme that rose to £7,500 from 6 April 2016. You will be able to use the new property allowance at the same time, though not for the same part of the home. So, for instance, you could rent out the spare room using the Rent a Room scheme and use the new £1,000 allowance to save tax on renting out a parking space on the drive. The big question is whether you are a trader in the first place?

Stanground Baptist Church is a small, family-friendly church in the heart of the Stanground community, offering activities for children of all ages.
Children welcome at family-friendly church! As part of our Vision statement we are committed to welcoming, encouraging and protecting children who come into the church building and we have recently updated our safeguarding policy and procedures. All adults working with children and the Leadership team are DBS checked and receive child-protection training. Our facilities are used during the week by numerous children of different ages attending: ␣ Brownies (Weds 6:30-8:00 pm term time) ␣ Coffee morning (alternate Thurs 10-12 am all year) ␣ Totstop parent and baby/toddler group (Fri 9:45-11:30 term time) ␣ Junior Church (Sun 10:15-11:30, except 1st Sunday of the month) Junior Church (another name for Sunday School) is a club for children

aged 3-11, which aims to introduce Bible stories and themes to children in a fun and interactive way, such as through songs, games, drama, crafts, cooking and puzzles; each session is different! It is prepared and led by two trained adults from the church, sometimes supported by one of our teenage members. Parents are welcome to stay and see what happens, especially with any young children and we can also offer a crèche. The children who come to Junior Church soon make friends and are rewarded for their attendance with stickers which add up to prizes from our Treasure boxes! They also enjoy preparing cards and presents for special occasions such as Mothers and Fathers days, Easter and Christmas and they can choose to take part in a Nativity service. They have a party at the end of each year with games and lots of food!
If your child is interested in trying Junior Church, please contact Jane or Angela on 01733 310411 or just pop in any Sunday at 10:15, apart from the first of each month, which is Family Cafe church and starts at 11:00am (1 May and 5 June; all ages welcome). At St Michael’s, we’ve been a polling station for some years, but this year the ward boundaries have changed and polling will be for the new ward of Stanground South, including Oakdale, Park Farm and Cardea. The rest of our parish round St John’s is now part of the Fletton and Stanground ward. Each ward has three councillors and we have three votes to cast. Because so much is changing some people asked the church if we would host a HUSTINGS, an open meeting where each of the candidates gets a chance to explain their policies and take questions from the public. The hustings will be on Tuesday 26 April at St John’s Church for the Fletton and Stanground ward, and on Thursday 28 April for the Stanground South ward. All the candidates are invited to take part. Watch out for posters locally and keep an eye on the local facebook groups for more information. Thy Kingdom Come Later in May, we are part of a national initiative to pray for our country, called ‘Thy Kingdom’. The words are from The Lord’s Prayer and we will be praying specifically for this area between Ascension Day, which also happens to be Election Day, 5 May and Pentecost on the 15th. At St Michael’s we are aiming to go for 24 hours praying continuously from the evening of the 12th right through the 13th. St John’s will be open every day for an hour. If you want us to pray for you specifically, please send your prayer via our website, or drop in to church, or even leave your prayer request when you come to vote! LEGAL ADVICE
Keeping your divorce stress free and simple If you have decided your marriage is over you will most probably want to make the whole process of divorce as painless as possible. So what is the secret?
Whilst getting a divorce is clearly not an ideal situation it does not have to be a time consuming, stressful, unpleasant money pit. Sensible advice coupled with sensible people can help to ensure the experience is as painless and cost effective as possible but more importantly that you and your children can move forward with your lives in the best possible way.
u Firstly, don’t only take advice from your friends and family, seek professional advice from a family lawyer committed to resolving disputes in a nonconfrontational way. v Listen to the professional advice given to you and try to act upon it. Always negotiate before you litigate. Compromise is the essence of any agreement. w Inevitably there will be disagreements with your spouse but try to keep emotions under control and avoid verbal abuse and threats. This will simply lead to them becoming difficult and inflexible. You do not want a war. x Try to avoid involving the children or using them as a pawn. They are innocent in this situation and they will need the love and support of both parents. y You may have been thinking about a divorce for years whereas your partner may only have received the news a matter of weeks ago. You might have to slow down for a while, be patient, and wait until they are ready to discuss matters. z Consider all the options available to resolve matters, such as solicitor negotiation, mediation and only consider court proceedings as a last resort. A Resolution committed lawyer will explore the best option with you, suited to your individual case.

Particularly hightlighted this month are the challenges faced, and commitment Good by local team coaches, their appreciation for sponsorship support and Sport given, the huge efforts of their young players as they strive to gain deserved success. Proud Pumas crowned champions!
M
League & cup double guaranteed for one of the U13 teams
arch and April have been fantastic and historic months for Pumas. In particular, their two U13 teams that have both been crowned champions of their respective divisions in the Peterborough Junior Alliance league. This U13 Red & Black squad, led by coach Sam Baldowski, has nurtured a core group of players for the last 3 or 4 seasons who have seen changes year on year yet have been provided with excellent coaching along the way. Players who would otherwise not have been involved in football at all have been given the opportunity to play and learn under coach Sam which is one of the fundamental principles for Pumas; football for all abilities. The addition of several new players to the squad this season has added some quality and pace to the core group that has been superb in recent seasons. The result has been immediate, with an unblemished league record. The Blacks have gone 15 games with 15 wins and they hope to finish the season without defeat; a fantastic effort that should not be underestimated. To go unbeaten for this long is a real achievement, coupled with the team’s
fantastic run in the cup defeating teams from the division above in every round to meet up with our U13 Reds in the Hereward Cup final. Absolutely great stuff. Our U13 Red squad have battled with adversity and challenge to their very existence as a team over the last couple of seasons. So, to see the ongoing development of these guys, not just as footballers but as superb, young people is an extremely proud moment for everyone connected with Park Farm Pumas. After lifting the Hereward cup last season, this team has gone from strength to strength, being crowned this season’s champions of division 3 in the PJAL and now hoping to achieve a well deserved double by lifting the Hereward cup for the second year running. When I look back at the journey of both of these teams it’s very easy to forget that they almost didn’t exist. Around a year and a half ago coaching let downs, an exodus of players and an inability to bring new players in very nearly saw both of these teams folding. But like a phoenix from the flames both the U13 Reds & Blacks have risen to be superb ambassadors for
the entire club, doing things the right way and getting their just rewards with two fantastic divisional titles and an all Pumas U13 Hereward Cup final held on the 17 April. “The all Pumas U13 Hereward Cup final occasion will mark a fantastic season that will make it into the short but important history of our fantastic little club. We believe our players have brought something great to our club and this competition and I would like to thank all our fabulous coaches for all their hard work and guidance for our players over the last couple of seasons. I’d also like to say a huge thank you and well done to all the players and parents for their efforts and support of our club philosophies.” Ciaran McAuley, Chairman
If you would be interested in your child (boys & girls) joining our club and taking the opportunity of working with our FA Qualified coaching staff please contact our Chairman Ciaran McAuley on 07713 106898. Please take the opportunity to view our website www.pitchero.com/clubs/parkfarmpumas/ and learn more about us and our club. If you would like to be a part of our club please come and join us.
Stanground Sports Under 9s In May 2014, I was asked if I would like to take over the running of Stanground Sports under 9s football team as their current Manager was leaving. It was something I had always thought about and at the time I was assisting with the under 12s.
H
aving agreed to take the team on, I then encountered my first problem. From the old team I was left with three players (I needed 9 for the next season). Immediately, we started a recruitment drive to try and get a team together and luckily by the start of the season we had a squad of 10. Although the first few training sessions looked a bit desperate, with sometimes only 5 or 6 boys available to train, it all came together for the start of the season. The next challenge was to try and find a sponsor for the team. This seemed to prove more difficult than trying to find players, but my fatherin-law had mentioned to a friend and builder, Steve Goodwin, that they they were looking for a sponsor. Steve has turned out to be a fantastic sponsor of the team, supplying the boys with their match kit, this season’s training tops and a sub bench, also not forgetting the Easter Eggs, selection boxes at Christmas and the boxes of Capri suns. I can’t thank him enough. Now to the first match for this new team, which was away to March on a damp, September morning. This was always going to be a baptism of fire for a majority of the team, as only four of them had played match football. Our first game
and our first defeat 8-0. The next six weeks were tough on the team with defeat after defeat, and although the boys were disappointed, they had tried their best and given 100%. The next set of fixtures were released, and with some trepidation, we set off for Wittering on another wet Saturday morning. The training was starting to work and we achieved a draw 0-0. This felt like a massive victory to all of us. From then on, until the end of the season, things slowly started to improve, although still some defeats, we also had a few wins under our belts and we could look forward to the summer tournaments and the next season. This season was met with another challenge; the offside rule, as we are now playing 9v9. Harry, who had been helping train the team had said he would struggle to be there on match days as it clashed with his own football games since our matches were now scheduled on Sundays. Luckily, our goalkeeper’s Dad offered to help. Both Harry’s, and now Jonny’s, help at training and matches has been invaluable. It is not just the help but also having someone to make suggestions and to run ideas by.
So, a new season, new rules to learn, new players signed and a new assistant, all is feeling good! With only a handful of games left to play, we are starting to win some and draw a few. There are, of course, still some defeats, but these are only now by a goal or two. There has been a vast improvement with the team’s football from those early days, both individually and in their team play. They are now giving other teams a good game of football with some nice passing play when they put their minds to it. Jonny and myself will continue to develop the team and hopefully help them to reach their full potential. I would like to thank Stanground Sports Committee members for all the work they do to run the club, Jonny (Assistant Coach) and my wife, Karina, for all their help with the team, the parents for getting the boys to the matches and helping to set up the pitch. Thank you, also, to the players, for their commitment even when times were tough and for giving me the opportunity to manage a fantastic football team, something which I thoroughly enjoy. Special thanks our sponsor Steve Goodwin, Ground Works and Plant Hire E: goodydig@hotmail.co.uk M: 07747 875222

Preparation time 15 minutes Cooking time 20-30 minutes.
Five Greens Lasagne Method
Serves 2-4 depending on appetite.
lowering to a simmer and adding half the cottage cheese.
Half fill and boil the kettle.
Ingredients A bunch of spring onions Few anchovies in oil (optional) 3 cloves of garlic 175g asparagus 175g broccoli 250g frozen peas 150g frozen broad beans Handful fresh mint 150ml single cream 1/2 lemon (zested) 150-200ml vegetable stock 250g cottage cheese 1 packet lasagne sheets (dried or fresh) Parmesan cheese Fresh thyme (or a pinch of dried thyme)
Pour a little oil from the anchovies (if using) into a thick-bottomed saucepan and place on a medium heat. If not using anchovies use a tablespoon of olive oil. Finely slice the spring onions and half of the anchovies and then add them to the saucepan. Crush the cloves of garlic into the pan and fry until soft but not too coloured (burnt garlic is bitter). Snap the woody ends from the asparagus and discard. Finely slice the remaining stems asparagus into 1.5cm pieces. Break the broccoli into small florets of a similar size and add both broccoli and asparagus to the pan with a splash of boiling water from the kettle. After five minutes, add the peas and broad beans along with a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir well. Roughly chop the mint leaves then add them to the saucepan along with the cream. Grate in the zest of the lemon to taste. When the vegetables are soft, use a potato masher to mash some of the filling to create texture. Add the vegetable stock; bring to the boil before
Give everything a good stir and cook for a few more minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Take the vegetables off the heat and spoon around one third to a half of the mixture into a deep lasagne dish (approx dimensions 20cm x 15cm). Top with a lasagne sheet and a generous grating of parmesan cheese. Repeat the layers of vegetable and lasagne sheets until you have used all of the filling and then top with a final sheet. I prefer less pasta to filling so use fewer layers but it works as well with three layers. Mix the remaining 250g of cottage cheese with a splash of boiled water and then spread over the lasagne. Sprinkle over the thyme along with another good grating of parmesan and a final drizzle of olive oil. Bake in the oven for around 15 minutes until the topping has browned. Serve immediately with a green salad.
Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 60-70 minutes
Banana and Walnut Loaf Ingredients 225g plain flour 2 level tsp baking powder 80g softened or spreadable butter 1 large egg (beaten) 110g caster sugar 4 medium bananas (peeled) 50g walnuts (chopped) Zest 1 lemon Demerara sugar for sprinkling
Method
Fold in the chopped walnuts and lemon zest.
Preheat oven to 180C / gas 4. Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin.
Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared tin. Sprinkle with Demerara sugar.
Mash three bananas to a pulp and chop the fourth.
Place in the pre-heated oven so that the top of the tin is in the centre. Bake for 60-70 minutes until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean.
Sift the flour and baking powder together into a separate bowl. Add the butter, egg and caster sugar. Using a mixer mix everything together for a minute or two. Add the mashed and chopped bananas and briefly whisk them into the mixture.

Bring on the biological warfare!
I
’m a huge fan of biological warfare. But before you all write in to complain about my radical stance, I’m really not talking about anthrax and Ebola: I’m talking about using nature to tip the balance in favour of us gardeners. Ladybirds are my favourite biological control. They feast on aphids (greenfly) and during their year long lifespan they can scoff 5000 of them! Ladybird larvae are long and black with orange spots. They look a bit mean but don’t be tempted to squish them as they are also voracious aphid-eaters. Lacewing larvae eat 300 aphids each before turning into adult lacewings and guzzling down even more, and even the much maligned wasp has a taste for greenfly so don’t be too quick to swat it with your gardening glove; it’s actually protecting your roses.
By Rachael Leverton
The beautiful song thrush is in decline, but it loves to eat slugs and snails. Thrushes were very susceptible to slug-bait poison based on methiocarb and this was banned by the EU in 2014. The most common ingredient now is metaldehyde which is still very toxic to many garden beasts (as well as domestic animals). And slug bait is a very inefficient way to dispose of your slug population anyway, reducing it on average by just 10%. Frogs and toads are great slug-eaters, as are hedgehogs. The former can be encouraged by providing them with a tiny pond: it really doesn’t have to be much bigger than a bucket sunk into the ground. Hedgehogs prefer a pile of logs to hide under, or you could invest in a hedgehog house. There are many handsome ones about,
though if you’re a bit of a handyman you could probably make one yourself. The big new thing in biological pest control in recent years was the arrival of pre-packed nematodes and mites. Nematodes are tiny parasites which are watered on to a problem area when the soil temperature is 10C or greater. The nematodes enter the pest and reproduce inside it, killing it in the process. When the pest dies they are then released back into the soil, ready to infect new pests. There are nematodes to target slugs, vine weevils and ants. Predatory mites are also available to target red spider mite and thrips. All of these methods have the advantage of targeting a particular pest very specifically without causing damage to the environment. Of course with organic gardening you’re unlikely to get a pristine plot but don’t despair about the odd blemish. See it as a positive sign that you care about the environment and the wildlife in your garden then repeat after me, blemishes are beautiful... Let’s face it – when it comes to our property, most of us ensure the alarm is switched on, doors and windows are locked and a light is left on when the house is empty. But when considering our outdoor space and belongings, how many of us pay the same attention to garden security? As the fine weather settles in and the gardening bug bites, the temptation and opportunities for green-fingered thieves grow faster than weeds in the driveway. The brighter days and longer weekends present more time for mowing lawns, pottering in the garden, and spending time with friends and family al fresco. But according to the Crime Prevention website (thecrimepreventionwebsite.com) garden crime affects around one in seven households in the UK – with thieves targeting pretty much everything from plants and paving labs to garden statues, lawn mowers, fish from ponds and even newly-laid turf. While most of us see the garden as an extension of our living space – with nice ornaments and stylish furniture – we don’t always think about the value and security of our outdoor possessions in the same way as we do as those inside the home. However, we can all take some simple precautions to protect the garden and
possessions against green-fingered thieves, particularly during weekends or summer holidays when the home is empty. • Take a walk around your garden and check things that may be appealing to a thief - an unlocked back gate or shed (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools / machinery or bikes) • Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds • Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home • CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcomed activity from your home • Install some sensory / outdoor lighting • Alarm the garage to provide additional security or think about installing garage roller shutter doors • If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in new, improved fencing or panels • If you are going away, even for the weekend – lock any back or side gates or other entrances to the garden to limit access
by Eileen Le Voi
• Pack away out of sight any garden tools or equipment; even if you take a break from cutting the front lawn, keep your mower out of reach of opportunist thieves • Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball • Use a security pen to mark valuable items, like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode • Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group – where you and your neighbours can look out for each other (see www.ourwatch.org.uk to find your local group) When thinking about having any security, garden maintenance or crime prevention work carried out in your home and / or garden, always use someone reputable and trustworthy.
