Why you can be confident in a new service from Shine Further to feedback from its members, a national charity has launched a new service to help people with complex health conditions find the financial support they need.

T

he new Disability Benefits Advisory Service, launched by the charity Shine, will offer guidance, information and support to help more members access key disability benefits. Open to all members living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, the service will act as a ‘one stop shop’, giving specialist advice and one-to-one support. The service will also lead on relevant consultations on behalf of members, including representing Shine at the Disability Benefits Consortium. It will review and develop Shine information and events, tailored around the issues identified by members, and explore new ways to develop the benefits advisory support on offer. Shine, a disability confident employer, has been supporting people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus for more than 50 years, so understands how the conditions can affect every aspect of life. Focusing particularly on more complex benefit issues, the service will range from supporting new parents looking after children

with multiple needs, at home and at school, to young adults finding college, work or setting up a home, to people coping with later in life issues. Completing benefit applications can be a lengthy process. Mum Natalia, whose one-year old daughter Maryam has spina bifida and hydrocephalus, feels she would have been lost without Shine’s support. Little Maryam needs full time care, risks infections and often has trips to hospital. Despite knowing her way around the system, having worked with a local authority, Natalia initially felt overwhelmed. She explains: “DLA is a huge form, you need to know how to complete it. We didn’t get it the first time, we had to appeal. Shine helped us navigate the system, guided us on what to write, things to include, and we were successful the second time.” Natalia continues: “Maryam needs a lot of care, catheterisation, medication - but I know we can access Shine for support. That gives confidence.”

The new service will be a key deliverable in the charity’s new corporate plan to be launched later this year. To access the service, contact Shine on 01733 555988 or firstcontact@shinecharity.org.uk www.stangroundgazette.co.uk October 2017 stanground gazette

By the time you read this we should be settling back into our freshly re-plastered and painted church after a lot of hard work during the summer holiday period by a local company.

New look Baptist church reopens its doors!

T

he members of the church have also rolled up their sleeves to clean, move furniture and equipment and get everything in place to restart our groups. While the work was taking place we had to vacate the premises and we met on a Sunday at Kingfisher Court. This time of change and upheaval has been turned into a time of blessing and joy by God

and we thank Him for keeping all the workmen and our elderly building safe. We appreciate all the care the builders and decorators have shown and also want to thank the managers and residents of Kingfisher court for giving us a temporary home for our Sunday services and making us so welcome. We are excited about the future and how we can continue to serve our local community. If you would like to see

the transformation for yourself please join us on a Sunday at 10:15 (11:00 on the first Sunday of each month for cafe church). Alternatively we have a fortnightly coffee morning on Thursdays throughout the year from 10-12, which takes donations for local charities. Do check our website and notice boards for up to date information about these and other groups we host.

VAT on Roaming Charges This change takes effect from 1 November 2017 and alters the place of supply for VAT purposes of mobile telecommunication services made to U.K. non-business users (for example, private consumers) when they use their mobile phones outside the E.U. It aligns the U.K. treatment of these services with internationally agreed guidelines. The changes means that UK VAT will be charged on roaming services used by UK consumers outside the E.U. The intention is to resolve the inconsistency between the taxation of mobile phone use in the E.U. and that applied to outside the E.U. The change will bring UK VAT rules into line with the internationally agreed approach and it will also ensure mobile phone companies cannot use the inconsistency to avoid U.K. VAT. Whilst talking about roaming, mobile roaming charges across the E.U. finally ended on 15 June 2017 amid warnings to consumers to check their tariffs and remain aware of unexpected costs. The charges that were abolished, means U.K. mobile phone users can use their regular allowance of calls, texts and data for no extra cost from anywhere in the E.U. The Roam Like Home legislation aims to prevent consumers receiving huge bills after downloading films or other data while travelling in Europe, but BBC watchdog has warned that differences between providers when it comes to the details of tariffs could lead to unexpected costs for customers.

Cardea Community Sports Association is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

T

esco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores - being awarded to local community projects. Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. Cardea Community Sports Association is one of the groups on the shortlist. Their proposed project is the development of a picnic area at the Cardea Community Sports Pavillion. Ciaran McAuley, Chairman of the CCSA said “We really hope the community will go out to their local Tesco and vote for this project as the picnic area will benefit everyone in the community providing a pleasant outdoor space for families to enjoy and bring people together.” Voting is open in all local Tesco stores throughout September and October. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop. Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £33 million to more than 6,400 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.

""

We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for September and October. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see these come to life in hundreds of communities. Head of Community at Tesco, Alec Brown,

We’ve been thrilled to see the diversity of projects that have applied for funding, ranging from outdoor classrooms, sports facilities, community gardens, play areas and everything in between. We’re looking forward to learning the results of the customer vote and then supporting each group to bring their project to life. Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury

Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp

A-level success for Stanground Academy Students at the Stanground Academy are celebrating after receiving their results for their A-level or equivalent courses of study, with many exceeding expectation. Despite changes to the exams and syllabus, the overall pass rate was nearly 100 per cent and the average grade per student has increased from C- to C+ which is in line with the 2016 national average. What’s even more impressive is that the percentage of students achieving the highest grades in both traditional A-levels and vocational qualifications has improved. Whilst all the students have done remarkably well, there are some that have particular cause to celebrate: Chloe Orvis who achieved two A* and two A grades l Adam Bream who achieved two A grades and a Distinction* l Diana Brown who achieved two Distinctions and a Distinction* l Eric Chapman who achieved two A grades and three B grades l

Tomas Daniliauskas, who joined the Academy in 2012 with very little English, who achieved a triple Distinction* l Monika Zdunek who achieved an A*, two A grades and a B grade. l

James Scarrott, Principal, said: “I am delighted that, yet again, our sixth form students have shown what dedication, hard work and good teaching can deliver. These results are a credit to them and the dedicated staff at the Academy whose support was described as “amazing” in our recent Ofsted inspection. This is borne out by yet another increase in our sixth form students’ achievements. My sincere thanks go to the staff for their unfaltering commitment to delivering the best for our students and I offer my congratulations to our students and wish them luck as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.”

Last year's U13 PJAL Div 2 champions are looking for new players Our fantastic U13 Red squad that finished last season with a superb divisional title are looking to add two new players to the squad for the coming season. We have retained the vast majority of the squad from last season and we have added some very talented new players to the squad. So, on balance, the team looks even stronger than last year. But we have two places left to fill and we are looking for talented young players to challenge themselves in the PJAL Div 1. Can you please share this with friends, family and colleagues. We would love to bring in a couple of new talented players that could really make a mark in Div 1 with Pumas in the coming season.

We are also looking for U15s to play div 1 football. Contact Ciaran McAuley on 07713 106 898 or ciarso2000@yahoo.co.uk or send a message via www.parkfarmpumas.co.uk

Through a one-off visit, dedicated volunteers led by Groundwork staff make gardens more manageable, safer and more pleasant to spend time in. At the same time, clearing overgrown gardens makes it harder for criminals or fraudsters to identify occupants as potential targets. Gary’s father James recently benefited from a Green Aiders visit. Gary says:

“Dad is happier now – the fact that someone did something for him makes a difference. Green Aiders is the only gardening support that he’s had and they’ve done really well for him. It’s made me feel better, too, as I don’t need to worry – I know it’s under control now.” Head of Social Policy & Grant Giving at the Legion, Steven Baynes, said: “We’re pleased to have awarded over £43,000 to Groundwork. The grant demonstrates the Legion’s continued commitment to working with other organisations to provide the best support possible to our beneficiaries. It will also enable the Groundwork to use its expertise to make a real difference to those veterans struggling with the upkeep of their gardens.”

If you or someone you know could benefit from a Green Aiders visit, contact Groundwork Cambridgeshire & Peterborough on 01480 587143.

for New Sponsors

Peterborough Firework Fiesta

New sponsors for Peterborough’s Firework Fiesta are lined up to make this year’s event the region’s biggest and most spectacular community firework display.

B

ritannia Fire and Security has come on board as headline sponsor and will take a leading role in supporting this important fundraising event, together with sponsors Anglia Ruskin University. Now in its 40th Year, Peterborough Firework Fiesta is in the top 10 fireworks displays in the UK and a leading local charity fundraiser. All proceeds are ploughed back into Peterboroughbased charities and good causes; in the course of its history the event has raised over £500,000 for local charities. Colin Pogson, Managing Director of Britannia Fire & Security told us “We are delighted and proud to sponsor this spectacular event which is a highlight in Peterborough's calendar. The funds

raised are vital for local charities and good causes and we're looking forward to helping to raise even more this year.” Each year Peterborough Firework Fiesta’s popularity grows, with around 11,000 visitors enjoying last year’s spectacular display of fireworks by Titanium, the company behind national celebration fireworks such as the Commonwealth Games and New Year displays in London and Edinburgh. Free parking, live music by Heart FM, food outlets, fairground rides make it great family entertainment. Organised by the Rotary Club of Peterborough and Round Table, Firework Fiesta last year raised over £20,000 which was distributed to 26 charities and good causes in Peterborough.

The event will take place at Peterborough Arena at the East of England Showground on Saturday 4 November. Advance tickets will go on sale on 6 October, priced £3 for children aged under 15 (under 2 years are free); £7 for adults.

Pet Dental Care Tips Just like humans, pets teeth need regular care and attention to keep them healthy. Which pets suffer with dental problems?

Smaller breeds of dogs are more prone to require dental assistance in the form of veterinary cleaning than larger breeds due to their small, close together teeth. This also makes cats equally likely to need a little bit of expert help every now and again.

Brushing Your Pets Teeth

If your pet will let you, daily brushing is the best way to prevent dental disease. Some pets will quite happily tolerate having their teeth brushed regularly, especially if it has been introduced when they are young, however many are not so compliant. If your pet will let you brush their teeth, ensure you use pet specific toothpaste as human toothpaste for example contains fluoride which is toxic to dogs. For an in depth guide on how to brush a dogs teeth visit www.pedigree.com/dentalcare/

Food, Treats & Toys

If your pet experiences dental problems your Vets will be able to recommend suitable diets with specific teeth cleaning properties to help reduce the need for repeat treatment.

September HERE'S A FEW LITTLE-KNOWN HALLOWEEN FACTS:

Summer is truly over, the nights have drawn in and thoughts turn to Halloween. More wintry nights ahead and Christmas frippery has started appearing in the shops. I love all things Halloween. If you love to dress up, why not check out the local Halloween Extravaganza? Prizes are up for grabs!

• Halloween has also been known as: All Hallows' Eve, Samhain, All Hallowtide, The Feast of the Dead & The Day of the Dead. • Halloween is one of the oldest celebrations in the world, dating back over 2000 years to the time of the Celts who lived in Britain. • Trick or treating in the Middle-Ages involved the poor dressing in costumes and going door to door begging for food or money during Hallowmas. Often a Soul Cake was given – said to free a soul when the cake was eaten. The Heron The Heron has a great selection of live music this month – see the guide (left). In addition to holding their weekly quiz (Tuesday 8pm), The Heron has starting having regular Women's Institue meetings - with the next one on 4 October at 7pm. Following on from the success of last year's Halloween Party, Meri will be hosting a special Halloween Extravaganza with live music from Tiger Club. Meri hopes there will be lots spookily dressed party goers and will be giving out a prize for the best fancy dress outfit. The Woolpack The Woolpack held a very well attended charity day in aid of East Anglian Air Ambulance in early September. The Palmerston Arms Ukeule Band (PUB) started off proceedings playing lots of tunes to sing along too. There were loads of their band members there – so they barely fitted onto the special garden stage!

Ramshackle Serenade also performed their swinging rockabilly set during the evening. Linda had arranged for a number of pub games, including a very popular bottle tombola – where I won a nice bottle of Rjoja! They also had 'Guess the Weight of the Strange Vegetable'!, plus Linda put herself forwards for a good soaking in the stocks which I believe earnt an extra £40! Linda & her team would like to thank everyone who gave up their time, donated, performed, or came along to support the event. The grand total raised from the afternoon's merriment was £851 which is all going to the very worthy charity.

• 31 October is the last day of the Celtic calendar and was a pagan holiday honouring the dead. They used to put out treats to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain (their sacred festival). • People used to say that to hear an owl's call meant someone was about to die. • If you see a spider on this night, it could be the spirit of a dead loved one who is watching you. • The traditional carved pumpkins or Jacko’-lanterns were once made out of turnips, beets and potatoes — not pumpkins.

HAPPY HA THREE SPOOKY RECIPES Witch’s Finger Breadsticks

Ghost Meringues

Preparation time – 20 minutes Cooking time – 20 minutes Ingredients:

Preparation time – 20 minutes Cooking time – 1 hour 30 minutes Ingredients:

 1 ball pizza dough  1 large egg  1 tbsp water  sesame seeds and/or poppy seeds (optional)  8 whole raw almonds.  Melted butter and grated Parmesan cheese (for extra flavour)

 4 large egg whites (room temperature)  ½ tsp cream of tartar  225g caster sugar  1 tsp vanilla sugar or ½ tsp pure vanilla extract  ½ tsp of white vinegar  Miniature chocolate chips for eyes Appliances:  Large bowl  Whisk or electric mixer  Piping bag

 Wide piping nozzle  Baking tray  Baking paper

Instructions: Preheat oven to 90 °C Appliances:  Baking tray  Baking paper Instructions:  Preheat the oven to 250 °C. Line a baking tray with baking paper and set aside.  Place the pizza dough on a floured work surface. Then with floured hands, divide the dough and shape each piece into a stick about 9 to 10 inches long or use a pizza cutter. Twist each finger so that there is a knot in the middle which will become the knuckle.  Place the breadsticks on the baking tray side by side about three to five centimetres apart.  In a small bowl, beat together the egg and water. Brush each finger lightly with the mixture. Sprinkle with the sesame seeds, poppy seeds and or grated Parmesan cheese. Press one almond into the end of each finger.  Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown.  Let cool for about 5 minutes.

 Line two baking trays with non-stick baking paper.  Place the egg whites in a clean bowl or an electric mixer, and using the whisk attachment of an electric mixer beat the egg whites on medium-low speed until foamy.  Add the cream of tartar and continue whisking on high speed this time.  When soft peaks start to appear, begin to add the sugar - little by little. Also add the vanilla sugar or the vanilla extract.  Whisk on high speed until you have a very firm mixture. You will know it is done when you can no longer feel the sugar in the mixture (taste a little - if it’s really grainy, it's not ready yet).  Add the mixture to a piping bag and cut a 1½ cm hole at the end.  Pipe the ghosts using a swirl action onto the lined baking trays; try to keep them as straight as possible or they may tilt in the oven during cooking, and bake meringue ghosts for 1 ½ hours. They should be dry and crisp on the outside.  Once this time is up, leave the oven door slightly ajar allowing the meringues to cool slowly, until the meringues are completely cold before taking them out of the oven (this may take several hours)

Halloween Candlelit Ghost Tours  Tuesdays 10 & 31October Halloween Candlelit Ghost Tours available. 7:30pm. Tickets cost £5 for adults and £3 for children under 16 at the Peterborough Museum.

 First mix 1 cup of PVA glue, 1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda and ½ cup of shaving foam into a large bowl.  Squeeze some glow in the dark face/body face paint and/or a couple drops of your chosen food colouring into the mixture.  Mix well until you have a cake batter consistency.  Then squirt some contact lens solution into the bowl, mix well, add another squirt and mix again until you end up with a thick mixture you can shape into a ball. Keep adding squirts of the contact lens solution until you get your desired consistency or if the mixture is still too sticky.

 Take a glow stick and place it into a white balloon, then inflate the balloon.  Next draw on your balloon any ghostly design with the permanent black marker, but make sure the tip of the balloon is facing upwards so that string can be attached.  Place a muslin cloth on the ghost balloon, then with the string tie the muslin cloth to the tip of the balloon to secure everything in place, this way you can attach your balloon to any ceiling lights.

TRICK-OR-TREATING SAFETY TIPS

You will need:

 Try to always be around your parent/guardian (under 12) or around a trusted group of friends, which will prevent the chances of you getting lost and being unable to seek help when necessary.  Start trick-or-treating early, this way you will be able to better see others you encounter on the street and have a clearer view of your child at all times to avoid possible dangers.  Plan your route, this way you are less likely to get lost and stay on well lit streets with plenty of other people.  Never go inside a home whilst trick-or-treating and try to avoid homes you aren’t familiar with, especially ones without any Halloween decorations.  Throw away any treats that look opened or unwrapped, and give them to your parent for inspection.  Avoid sharp or inflexible props because you might accidently harm others around you or yourself, so parents should avoid posing unnecessary risks to their own child and other people when picking or making costumes.

 Plain white candle  Large red candle  Paper plate  Matches  Rubber gloves Instructions:  Place both the red and white candle under paper plates to prevent wax from damaging your surfaces.  Light your large red candle and wait until you can see a good amount of wax, gently pick up the candle with rubber gloves and pour the red wax onto the white candle.  Repeat these steps until a good portion of your white candle is covered with the red wax and has a blood dripping effect.

ut the bulky local business directory Yellow Pages as we know it is coming to end – and from next year onwards will no longer be published on paper. There was a time when no home would want to be without the Yellow Pages, in case of an emergency flooding or that last minute delivery of flowers. But after more than half a century – the directory will continue only in an online format, with the final print run next January. I suppose that owners Yell have recognised that this is a sign of the times, and from the view of Safe Local Trades - our business, brand and reputations has largely been built online, born in an age when websites are your shop window. your box. Having a user-friendly website which can be navigated with ease is what people want when looking for a service. Offering transparent feedback and customer reviews also helps to engage the customer and offer confidence. To have a mobile friendly online service is crucial in today’s busy and fast pace of life; whether you want to book an oven cleaner in your lunch break, make contact with a plumber whilst waiting on the platform for your train or book an appointment with a landscape gardener whilst on the school run. And of course, along with the website comes the social media element – certainly not around in the days when the young man using Yellow Pages in the TV ad was looking for a French polisher!
