Official opening of VetSavers Pet Shop & Vets On Friday 18th July local MP Shailesh Vara officially opened VetSavers Pet Shop and Vets on the new Cardea development in Peterborough. Mr Vara had the honour of cutting the ribbon at the Vets practice, as well as drawing a winner of the practices prize draw to win a years supply of Royal Canin food. But is wasn’t all work, Mr Vara was able to enjoy a slice of cake and refreshments and stayed to join the veterinary team and local residents for fun and games in aid of raising money for local pet charity Animal Helpline Homes4Dogs, based in Whittlesey. Money was raised for the charity through a wonderful selection of prizes in their raffle ranging from toys to bags of food, as well as a lucky dip and guess the number of sweet in the jar and the staff say they hope to continue to raise more for the charity in the future. The Pet Shop is open 7 days a week, with a Vet on site daily weekdays. Located just across from Morrisons supermarket, it aims to be a one stop shop for pet lovers and with the huge range of items they are stocking that start at just 99p, we think they have it covered. For dogs there’s chews and other tasty treats, rope toys, soft toys, tough toys, balls, beds, bowls, leads, harnesses and more. Cats too have there fill of toys to pounce on, scratch at, hide in, chase or cuddle, as well as carriers, collars, beds, bowls and all things required for our litter trained felines. It doesn’t stop there though as they also carry a wide range of toys, food and other accessories for small furies such as ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters. Even our feathered friends outdoors are catered for within the Pet Shop area. VetSavers also stocks traditional pet food brands such as Royal Canin, Eukanuba, Iams and James Wellbeloved, as well as frozen raw food from Natures Menu. Plus some handy items for us humans, including some that might not be so popular with our pets such as pet shampoo. The Vets offers all the usual GP services such as vaccinations, consults, on going care for existing conditions etc. Clients will also benefit from local referral services at Broadway Veterinary Hospital in Peterborough for cases that require hospitalisation, intensive care, Ophthalmic or Orthopaedic care.

Police Panel Neighbourhood Delivery Meeting Stanground, Fletton and Woodston New Chairperson My name is Ray (Raymond) Bisby. I have been elected as the new Chairperson of what people may know as the Police Panel for Stanground, Fletton and Woodston. I would like to inform you that the name has now changed to the Neighbourhood Delivery Meeting and the reason for this is as follows: The meeting is a partnership between local Council Representatives, Neighbourhood Watch, Cross Keys and the Police. Together we try to resolve problems that residents raise and attempt to put in measures to resolve those problems in a satisfactory manor for everyone. To give you a little about my background: I was a member of The Royal Ulster Constabulary for over 20 years until I was injured on duty. Whilst in the force I was part of the Community Relations Branch. Following my retirement, I was asked by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, to represent him within the Prisons for three years. I moved to Peterborough and eventually bought a home in Cardea, Stanground. I started the Neighbourhood watch in Cardea, which has been running for almost three years. My vision for the future of the Neighbourhood Delivery Meeting is as follows: •

Promote the working relationship of all partners of the committee.

Gain the trust of the residents.

Ensure that the priorities set for each quarter are achievable and are acted upon.

Give feedback to the community of results or lack of results.

Look at potential problems and remove that potential where possible.

Promote Ecops, the service where Results and other information can be passed to the community and may be passed back to Police.

Please see adjacent page for details of our next meeting.

Stanground Commemorates the start of World War One The tenor bell tolled a ‘half-muffled’ peal. The dead sound of the second bell contrasting with the brightness of the first bell ringing out in the darkness in an eerie fashion. On 4th August at 10pm as we approached the 100 year anniversary of the Great War the church was open for an act of commemoration.

Community News

Lights Out

This was the right place because the war memorial for Stanground was constructed in 1919 inside the parish church. It is right at the far end and forms the ‘high altar’, carved out of granite and engraved in memory of the fallen. The Blues House will be playing during the day. Ryan Casbon from Stanground plays local venues regularly with the Rock Band Velocity but it’s the blues that he really loves. Last year at our Community Festival local people turned up saying, “we were dancing to the music in our gardens so we decided to come along and join in.”

As people gathered 32 candles were lit, one for each of the fallen of the Great War. The lights were turned out. The hour of Vigil began, an hour of watching and listening as the time passed to the solemn moment. Poetry and readings based on the Westminster Abbey vigil, were read by Chloe Williams, Graham Hill and Graham Shorter. There was sung chant and recorded music including the amazing ‘Pray for Peace’ by Reba McEntire. Anne, the Vicar led prayers written by people who had experienced the conflict and meditations on war and peace from people of the time. On each of the quarter hours some of the candles were extinguished till in the minutes approaching 11pm only one candle burned on the war memorial. At two minutes to eleven, this too was put out and the last two minutes were spent together in darkness and silence. A powerfully moving experience and a sign of commitment to do our best to learn from the past as well as to remember it.

St Michael’s Church was started in the 1960’s to serve the growing community in the Oakdale area. Oakdale in those days was much like Cardea is now with new houses going up every day and new families moving in. To begin with the church met in what is now the Church Hall and then in the 1970’s a new church building was erected. The church will be open during the day with some surprise events happening there.

Sub Xpress in Serpentine Green may be a small family run business, however, at the moment, they are on top of the world!

The popular toasted sandwich store with a 5 star Food Hygiene rating was invited to the exciting Sammies Awards, the Oscars of the sandwich world, and managed to bring home the Gold Award at the 2014 event. The exciting evening was hosted by acclaimed chef Aldo Zilli, a Michelin starred restaurant owner from the capital. The 15 year old family business offering gluten free and unprocessed food received the award from the British Sandwich Association, meaning the award is fully recognised within the sandwich world. Therefore, this award is very important for owner Peter, as well as being an accolade from which to proudly share with the local community. This has definitely put the whole store on a high as it attempts further successes in the years to come. We cannot wait to see its progress.

THE GREAT FEN The Great Fen has just been awarded the Sandford Award for Heritage Education - a prestigious national award; past winners (2013) include the Giant’s Causeway, Hampton Court Palace and the National Museum of Wales. The Fen Time Travellers Programme was delivered to Bury School earlier this summer, and was judged and assessed on everything from pre-visit information to delivery of the programme to post-visit follow up information. Fen Time Travellers is an education programme, showing how Living Landscapes can use heritage to engage with and create new audiences, and endorses the excellence of the programmes which the Great Fen and Wildlife Trust Education and Community teams deliver. The programme explores lifestyles through stories, role play and interactive activities on a time trail, becoming part of a ‘Time Team’ and digging for artefacts from bygone days.

Lead Judge Christopher Green said: “The Wildlife Trust Centre at Ramsey Heights has a fantastic story to tell relating to the heritage of this part of the Fens. The classroom, having once been a Victorian brickworks, is in the most magical setting where learners can explore, investigate and interpret how people in this area used to live. Changes in land use are brought alive while delving into the impact of the drainage of the Fens from Roman times to the present day. Fen Time Travellers meet their guide, Billy the Brickmaker, who appears from the dusty brick kiln and invites them on a journey through time to find out about life in times past and to meet characters across the woodland and meadows, all of whom are based on real historical figures. We meet Sybil, the

wise woman, who makes potions and medicines from fenland herbs and plants, and read notes from Willie the Fisherman who helps us catch eels and other wildlife. Heritage abounds in this unique setting, rich in both culture and habitats.” Whether it is den building, pond dipping, bug hunting, creating wild art or meeting historical fen characters, activities at the Great Fen are designed to connect people of all ages to nature and their local heritage through immersion in the natural environment. The Education and Communities Activities at the Countryside Classroom at Ramsey Heights are supported by BGL Insurance Group, Peterborough.

The Wildlife Trust Countryside Centre has excellent all weather facilities enabling education programmes to run all year round. For more information please see our website www.greatfen.org.uk or call 01487 710420.

Business Focus

Money Matters

by Pete Bird, Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants

If you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdnco.co.uk and if of general interest, it will be published here!

Bird & Co News!

Please note we shall be changing address in September 2014 to Holme Road in Yaxley which is just around the corner from our current address. I am also pleased to announce that Mark Laws will be joining me from that date as well – further details to our clients will follow.

Pension Scams Beware! It appears following the changes, pension scams are on the increase in the UK. Check the facts before you make an irreversible decision. A lifetime’s savings can be lost in a moment. Pension scams are enticing savers by claiming to help them access their pension before age 55 or that people can already take more than 25% of their pension as cash, tax free. For most people the offers will be bogus and victims will lose most, if not all, of their savings. Only in rare cases – like terminal illness – can pension scheme members take their pension before age 55. It remains the law that pension scheme members can only take up to 25% of their pension savings as a cash lump sum. Although this may change in the future, it’s important that members aren’t fooled into thinking that is the law today. Pension scheme members who agree to transfer may lose all their savings and may still be subject to tax charges of over half their transfer value for taking an ‘unauthorised payment’. Reproduced by kind permission from The Pensions Regular where more details may be obtained on their website: www.thepensionsregulator.gov.uk/pension-scams

Powerleagu Powerleague Colts FC held their end of season presentation and family fun day on 28th June this year at Stanground Academy.

With everything in place including bouncy castles, various trade and charity stalls, games including human bar football, crossbar challenge, penalty shootout, speed cage and many others all we needed were guests and some sunny weather. While the guests didn’t let us down, the good old British weather was as reliable as usual and rained consistently all afternoon. However in true Brit style we soldiered on, some with umbrellas, some with raincoats and some, well mostly everyone, crammed into the large marquee we had ordered “just in case” and persevered in true “carry on” style. The day started with some lovely fine weather and proceedings got under way with a Belly dance exhibition from Yaxley based April

The players from the U18, U16 and U15 teams were presented with their trophies in between the attractions in the main arena and as the crowd increased, unfortunately so did the clouds. Next into the main arena was professional freestyle footballer Connor McCarthy, suitably attired in a Brazil kit Connor amazed children and adults alike with some amazing football tricks. The ball seemed to be on string as he juggled from foot to head and everywhere in between. This must have had an effect on the youngsters in the crowd, as once Connor had finished his routine the rain started, but with the former UK champion freestyler to themselves the kids were out in the rain with him for the next 3 hours learning tricks. The U14, U13 and U12 teams were presented with their trophies and while the rain continued to lash down the bar in Powerleague

In the main arena though things carried on, and we were treated to an amazing singing and dancing experience courtesy of local group “Theatretrain” following on from this the U11, U10, and U9 teams were called up to receive their trophies. Connor McCarthy once again performed for the crowd and we finished the presentations off with the U8 and development squads. LITTLE KICKERS

Little Kickers has been delighted with its re-launch to the classes in the area under new management, and the classes offering football fun for children aged 2 years to 7 years are now thriving. The classes get the children’s imaginations fired as they take part in games where they must outwit the bears to capture the fruit, go on train journeys to the seaside and protect their balls from sharkinfested seas, all of which involve them running, stretching, jumping and getting hot and sweaty! In the past 14 years that Little Kickers has been running, it has grown to become the UK’s most

popular pastimes for the pre-school population, but the company ethos has remained the same: play not push. Our belief that the potential of the younger age group is limitless and our commitment to ensuring that every pre-schooler who attends one of our sessions receives an inspiring introduction to sport.

When parents separate, what happens to the children?

Legal Advice

Finally the new season is here!

When a couple separate decisions have to be made as to what is best for the children of the family. Ideally parents would reach agreement between themselves, but that is not always possible and sometimes parents need help. There are several ways parents can try to reach an agreement over arrangements for their children such as: Solicitor Negotiation - where each parent instructs a solicitor to enter into negotiations on their behalf in the hope of reaching a mutual agreement; Mediation - where an independent mediator holds a number of meetings with the parents to assist them to agree arrangements directly; Court proceedings - sometimes required to resolve disputes between parents but always considered as the absolute last resort. Abby Smith of Setfords Solicitors always approaches such matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting parents to reach a swift, amicable agreement which protects their own relationship as co-parents for the future but also each parents’ own relationship with the children. For any Family Law queries or information about Family Mediation please contact Abby Smith for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Thereafter meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient to you, with very competitive charging rates.

Do you need a family lawyer? • Divorce & separation • Cohabitation Disputes • Pre-nuptial Agreements • Financial Matters • Children Matters

Sustainably managed farms provide vital habitats for wildlife, with 50% of all wildlife in Europe relying upon them for survival. There’s such a variety of wildlife you can spot when you’re out and about, including more than 60 species of mammal. Not all of these species are native to Britain though. For example: rabbits, grey squirrels and brown rats were all introduced in the last 15,000 years. Today rabbits are one of our most common mammals and every countryside walk will provide plentiful sightings of their small white tails scurrying away. Yet rabbits were actually introduced here in the 12th century for their fur and meat. Rabbits certainly aren’t fussy eaters, and they munch on a wide range of vegetation, including grass, bulbs and bark. Because their diet is hard to digest they actually eat their food twice! They produce soft droppings with high nutritional value, which they then eat, before producing hard pellets of waste material.

Nature

Hedgerows, once filled with blossom and swaying umbels of cow parsley, can seemingly overnight be replaced by ripe berries and the flaming shades of autumn. Farm fields filled with the freshest green soon become bronzed and dusty landscapes.

Rodents make up the largest group of mammals, comprising over 40% of mammal species. Most rodents are small in size, and their incisor teeth grow continuously, meaning they must be kept short by gnawing. Harvest mice are particularly fascinating creatures that belong to this classification. Harvest mice eat seeds, berries and insects. They are proficient climbers and like to build nests of woven grass at least 30cm (12in) above the ground in the dense vegetation of grasses and cereal crops. They climb with help from the tips of their tails, which can grip to the strands of grasses! If you’re heading out in the early morning or evening then keep your eyes peeled for fox sightings. Foxes are notoriously shy creatures that can be hard to spot, but despite this a large number live in our towns. You may catch their eyes shining vividly in the beam of your car headlights at night. Foxes live in family groups but tend to search alone for food. They are scavengers and can eat everything from insects, earthworms, birds and small mammals. They are also partial to scraps of food left behind by humans, so these crafty creatures may go through your bins while you’re tucked up in bed!

The theme for the concert this year was music from film. We had over 40 students in the show ranging from year 7 to year 13; we also had performances from a number of staff members. We had student performances from our College band, flute ensemble, saxophone ensemble,

rock bands and many solo acts. We also had staff performances from Fake That and Admin Abba. We have so any talented performers within the College and it was wonderful to see so many of them performing in the concert. This show gave our students the opportunity to showcase all of the hard work and commitment they have put into music in the last year. The concert was a great success and was attended by 200 audience members. Proceeds

from the concert will go towards purchasing new equipment for students to use in their music lessons. We are very proud of all the students who took part in the concert, whether it was as performer or supporting the show in the technical team, well done to everyone who took part. Our next musical concert will take place at St Mary’s Church in Whittlesey in December 2014.

Stanground Blog

STANGROUND

BLOG by Jack Moakes

I recently acquired myself a new job, which was a good thing, however this has opened up an entirely new world to me, the joys of the morning commute.

I was thinking...

Having spent the last 18 months of my life working an evening shift, the entire notion of rising a long time before midday is an alien concept to me. Where before, the roads were mostly empty, at least in the direction I was travelling, I have now encountered the full horror of what many call, rush hour.

their phones than they do the road, frankly I believe if I see someone doing this I should be able to punch through their window and take it off of them. I bought motorbike gloves with kevlar knuckles built into them in anticipation of this being made legal and everything.

Sometimes I think that the morning rush hour is populated mostly by professional formula one drivers, so desperate are they to shave off any second they can on their morning commute that they’ll make such questionable decisions that even Evel Knievel would label their actions as “a tad risky”, you know, if he weren’t dead. I can’t help but question the sanity of someone who is willing to make a dangerous overtake into incoming traffic in order to arrive at work a few seconds earlier, who wants to spend more time than is absolutely necessary at work anyway?

But without a doubt the most dangerous people I meet on my morning commutes are the people who appear to be utterly oblivious to the fact that they are on the road at all. I can only assume these people are still half asleep as they travel, as they seem only aware of themselves. The most recent incident involved a man in a van who looked straight at me as he pulled out onto the road and attempted to kill me, luckily I narrowly avoided this assassination attempt and completed my journey alive. This experience wasn’t the first of its kind and I’d bet the house I one day intend to buy on this not being the last time either.

At least I can vaguely understand people who blast through the traffic as fast as possible, they’re almost predictable. It’s the people travelling at 10mph below the speed limit that you really have watch out for. These are the people even more committed to work than the daredevils I’ve already mentioned, these are the people who begin work before they’ve even arrived. I ride a motorbike, so my elevated position allows me to see into the cars of the potential murderers surrounding me. The most common offenders I spot from my position, being idiots that spend more time looking at

WE ARE BIG IDEAS With over 15 years of unique, innovative experience, Dimension 6000 understands the importance of creating a successful impact.

I figured I could probably end this months edition with a list of top tips for driving on the roads, but I am exceptionally lazy so I’ll give you only one. Stop being a moron. Oh, and if anyone reading this is in a position of power over the roads, please for the love of god remove the traffic lights on Whittlesey Road that are next to Oakdale Avenue and Southfields school. They’re utterly hopeless, there’s an underpass literally a hundred yards down the road, everyone should use that instead.

Steaming ahead! The Iron ladies (Julie and Nicky) based in Yaxley have seen their business grow from strength to strength in the last few years, so much so that they now have new premises, Julie and Nicky both local Yaxley girls have converted their garage to accommodate their business needs.

Business Focus

Moving home could not be easier Step 1 Your home will sell much faster if it does not look cluttered. Make your home look more spacious and you will make it more attractive to potential buyers. Let’s start the moving process before you sell, and take the pressure of all the last minute work. We will deliver to your house, free of charge, one of our INBOX pods. It will sit on our trailer outside your home and you can pack it at your leisure, with all of those things you don’t need for a while, and any excess furniture you don’t need or use (but don’t want to lose).

Step 2 You padlock your pod and we collect it and store it for you in our secure indoor warehouse. If you need more, we can deliver more. Again, there is no charge for delivery or collection. You can have access your pod at any time whilst it is in our store and have as many pods as you need.

Step 3 Once you have exchanged, you can begin the house moving process gradually filling pods, in your own time and only leave essential items until the last minute. Easy! No stress! No Time pressures! No expensive removal companies! It could not be easier (or more cost effective).

You will only be charged for the time the pods are in storage. Prices start at £60 per month.

Step 4

• Delivery is free within a 30 mile radius of our warehouse in Yaxley, thereafter it is at £ 1.00 per mile. • We can store your pods for as long as you need us to.

We deliver your pods to your new home as you want them. Again, you can take your time and have them one at a time, when you want them.

• Note. We also have 20ft Steel containers available for on- site rental, at very competitive prices. • Call us now and find out how we can help you make your move so much easier!

This month your focus will be on family and loved ones, they may not say it, but they need your help and support right now, do what you can to assist.

Taurus April 21-May21 However you try and cover up your emotions and feelings this month, there’s one thing you can’t get away from, this overwhelming sensation of being frustrated and stuck in a rut. You need to be brave and bold this month and speak up, let the people/person know how you really feel. Gemini

Single? you are more likely to meet someone who’s a kindred spirit, which in turn, evolves into a brilliant new romance. Virgo August 24-September 23 If you still feel like you are in limbo, ask yourself why? What is it that you are overwhelmed with or holding back from? You cannot continue to live this half life. Maybe you are scared to address the real deep-rooted feelings/fears you have - be brave and speak up. Capricorn December 22-January 20 Devoting yourself to work and investing time and money in your home, may not sound like much fun, but your efforts will pay off over the next few months. Be prepared to spread your wings farther afield regarding work, you’ll be amazed at what comes your way. Aquarius January 21-February 19 Risqué behaviour could land you in hot water this month, as a certain object of your desire could well be spoken for. It may seem alright to flirt, just don’t lose your head and heart to someone who can’t give you honest answers. Pisces February 20-March 20

Throw caution to the wind this month and follow your passion. Your creative juices will be in full flow by the end of the month and could even tie in with a money making opportunity. If wanting to move house, don’t be so rigid with what you are looking for, a brilliant property is right under your nose.

If it is your birthday this month....

This is the month to get your house in order, de-cluttering, decorating or even moving, either way, it’ll be a fresh start. A friend whom you thought you knew well will surprise you, but you may not agree to what they ask of you.

Courier Fraud If you haven’t heard of the ‘Courier Fraud’ yet, please read this and share with others.

Courier frauds are becoming more prevalent and sophisticated. Usually the elderly are targeted. Scammers will telephone a potential victim purporting to be from their bank, from the police or other law enforcement authority. They then dupe the person into revealing their PIN and handing over their debit or credit card.

What you should know A scammer rings you, claiming to be from your Bank or the Police, saying a fraudulent payment has been spotted on your card and this needs resolving, or that someone has been arrested using your details and cards. You may be asked to ring back using the phone number on the back of your card. This further convinces you that the call is genuine. However, the scammer keeps the line open at their end so, when you make the call, you are unknowingly connected straight back to them or their friends. They will ask you for your PIN number or sometimes ask you to key it into your phone’s handset. YOU SHOULD NEVER GIVE YOUR PIN TO ANYONE IN ANY WAY. The scammer then sends a courier or taxi to pick up your card from your home. If is possible the driver does not know they are being used as part of the scam. Once they have your card and PIN the scammer can then spend your money. There are many variations to this scam, one of which is where the scammer requests you to assist in a police investigation by asking you to go to your bank, withdraw a large sum of cash and take this home, where it will be collected by a courier or taxi driver.

Prevention Advice If you receive a call like this, hang up the phone. In order to clear your line from the scammer, wait at least 5 minutes before making any calls. DO NOT hand over any money as a result of this type of phone call. Please be aware of the following Your bank or the police will NEVER ring you and tell you that they are coming to your home to pick up your card, so never hand it over to anyone who comes to collect it. Your bank will NEVER ask you to authorise anything by entering your PIN into the telephone. NEVER share your PIN with anyone – the only times you should use your PIN is at a cash machine or when you use a chip and PIN machine. If you think you have been a victim of this scam, please telephone the police on 101.
