introducing your

New Police Chair I’d like to introduce myself to you all as your newly elected Chair. As you know Ray Bisby was Chair of this Police panel, but he was duly elected in May as a Local Councillor for us, so it has meant that he has had to stand down.

M

y name is Carol Harrison and I was duly elected on 7 July 2015 to take over from Ray at the meeting held in St Michael’s School, Cardea. I’d like to personally thank Ray for all his help during his time as Chair, and in his role as Councillor he can continue to support us from a different perspective. I have a keen interest in helping to support the community by volunteering at Sue Ryder in Stanground which helps our local Thorpe Hall Hospice. This follows my Oncology interest from my nursing days and until I retired, helping to administer patients’ Chemotherapy. Being the gatekeeper (treasurer) of the Cardea First Responders, I’m keen

to see the community support this worthy service of volunteers who give up their free time to assist the East Anglia Ambulance service, providing Lifesaving First Aid in our area. A big ‘thank you’ to the team: Alex, Kelvin, Charlotte, Toni, Fay & Michelle. Congratulations to the new members of the team on their recent success in completing the training and passing the assessment. Well done! Recently, I was asked if I could also help out the Peterborough Neighbourhood Watch (PBNHW) Chair Alan Paul for a couple of hours a week. I’ve agreed and am currently in the process of getting my role sorted with a contact email address.

7 July - Police Panel meeting: New Sector Inspector Matt Bill based at Hampton station introduced himself. New priorities: Woodston - drug use, the Dell cut through to New Rd. Fletton - None Cardea - parking issues all over the area. Park Farm - ASB in the play park & surrounding area. Next meeting TBC It would be good to see more residents attending these meetings. Together, let’s make our community a safer place for residents, visitors & workers by being proactive, responsible & caring in our actions.

Your community needs you!

Cardea Update on behalf of the Cardea Residents Association.

by Kate Ferris

The start of a new school year always seems such a big step for the children. I hope that all the young people of Stanground have had a brilliant summer break. Just because it’s time to go back to the routine of studying hard it doesn’t mean that it’s all work and no play though … we’re very happy to announce that after lots of hard work planning and gaining funds, Cardea finally has a youth club!

T

Look out for a progress report on the youth group in the next issue!

hanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Funds for All we are able to launch a Friday evening group for 11-16 year olds, hopefully in time we’ll have enough helpers to put on a group for the younger ones too. As always, the youth work is run entirely by volunteers and depends on donations as, so far, here in Cardea there are no provisions for our children. We will always be glad of any help, whether coming along and joining in or donating games, play equipment or, of course, funds. If you have a particular hobby or skill that you feel the kids would be interested in, by all means get in touch as we’d love to have guests popping in to give a talk or put on an activity. Although the group is intended for the youngsters living at Cardea we’d be happy to see you if you live in the wider local community, so please don’t think it’s exclusively for Cardeans! Hopefully, we’ll have photos for the next issue and if you can help in any way please do not hesitate to get in touch.

/stangroundgazette www.stangroundgazette.co.uk

We hold a Cardea community meeting every six weeks or so with updates from the CRA and Neighbourhood Watch, and we’re very pleased to announce that attendance figures are rising with each meeting with more new faces which is really encouraging as we strive to build an inclusive community that residents can feel part of. If you’re new to Cardea please come along if you can to say ‘hello’. The meeting dates are posted on our notice boards, and in Morrison’s and also on our Facebook page MyCardea. One of the things that newer residents may not be aware of is the fact that as we are still “unadopted” by the council, we, the residents, are responsible for the emptying of the litter bins. At present this task is carried out by three of our committee members and without them the development would still be binless! This is another appeal for help I’m afraid, but if anyone has any spare time and would like to join the bin crew or a litter picking rota please get in touch, either by email to myself kawebb@live.co.uk or via the Facebook page. All help will be welcome.

New flag unveiled for schools’ Peterborough Eco Framework A new Peterborough Eco Framework flag for schools, which has been inspired by designs from local pupils, has been unveiled. This flag will be flown at schools throughout the city to celebrate and mark students’ environmental achievements.

T

he independent charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) is leading the way nationally with its new and bespoke Eco Framework for Peterborough schools – embedding knowledge of sustainability issues into classes to inspire the next generation of forward-thinking students. The framework allows schools to show their progress towards becoming Sustainable Schools and their contribution towards enabling Peterborough to become the UK’s Environment Capital. As part of the new framework, schools can gain accreditation in each of the 10 Environment Capital themes. Certificates will be awarded for each theme, and when a school has achieved five themes they can proudly fly the

flag. During the summer term, pupils across the city were invited to contribute to the design of the flag. “We wanted the pupils to play a significant part in the creation of this flag and so we ran a competition looking for their designs,” explains Environmental Education Coordinator Jill Foster. “We were delighted that over 100 entries were submitted, then student Eco Teams shortlisted 15 entries, which a professional designer interpreted to create our finalised flag. It was fantastic to unveil to the students at our recent Peterborough Eco Education Awards a flag design that they had contributed so massively towards.” For each framework theme there is a target to achieve by 2050, objectives to work towards,

plus a list of local providers who can assist with resources and information. The aim is for schools to develop a responsible outlook among the pupils based on an appreciation of the impact of their personal values and behaviours.

Four schools have been quick off the mark and already gained certificates in either one or two themes. These were Braybrook Primary School, Wittering Primary School, Woodston Primary School and Hampton Hargate Primary School.

It’s great to see so many young people supporting Peterborough in creating the UK’s Environment Capital. Reducing the amount of energy we use, increasing the amount we recycle and generally minimising our impact on the environment is key to creating a greener future. I hope to see many eco flags being flown over city schools in the coming months and years. Cllr John Holdich, leader and cabinet member for education, skills and university at Peterborough City Council

For more information about the Peterborough Eco Framework for schools please contact Jill Foster at PECT on 01733 866440 or email jill.foster@pect.org.uk. For further details about Peterborough Environment City Trust, visit www.pect.org.uk

Stanground & Farcet C of E Churches

We had an amazing event on 26th July at St John’s when eleven people were confirmed by the Bishop of Peterborough.

G

etting confirmed in the second part of christening (also known as baptism), when the Bishop prays for people who have been baptised to confirm the choice they made at their baptism, or if the person was baptised as a baby, to confirm the choice their parents made for them. We have lost and lots of baptisms in Stanground and I am delighted that now many people are making the baptism really live for them by coming to confirmation and becoming full members of the church. If you are interested in this, I’d love to hear from you. In September our attention moves down to the Mace Road church where we have our annual

Community Festival for St Michael’s Day on Saturday 26th Septmmber from 11 - 4. In the lovely gardens around the church there will be stall and side shows, bouncy castle, hot and cold food stalls, cream teas. Various groups will be performing and we hope it will be a fun day for everyone. More details in next month’s issue. We have also begun an updating programme inside this little church and the Community Day on the 26th would be a good opportunity to see what we’ve done so far and find out about our plans for the future. Lots happening - you can keep up to date by joining our Facebook page: Stanground C of E churches. Grace and peace to you all, Anne

Super Slimmer is a glamourous grandmother

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, when ‘The Few’ took to the skies and defended the UK from the attacking Luftwaffe.

Local Stanground grandmother, Irene Keen, has discovered less is more after losing 4 stone 10 pounds to get to her target weight.

About The Great British Sunday lunch

T

o mark the anniversary the RAF Benevolent Fund, the RAF’s leading welfare charity, is launching the Great British Sunday Lunch - the new national fundraising event aimed at getting families and friends back around the dinner table. Whether it is a full-on roast dinner with all the trimmings or a favourite curry, the Fund is asking supporters to get together and host a Sunday lunch on Sunday 13th September to raise vital funds. What better way to pay tribute to those who have served their country than by serving up some delicious food?

10

By supporting the RAF Benevolent Fund, diners will be supporting work to assist veterans, serving personnel and their families who are facing challenges in their lives. The Fund receives no government grants and last year spent more than £18 million supporting 40,000 members of the RAF family, from the youngest child growing up on a RAF Station to our WWII veterans. We do hope you’ll join us in making the first Great British Sunday Lunch a great success. www.rafbf.org.uk/gbsl

Sometimes it’s hard to admit that you need to do something about your weight, and ask for help, but I think it’s the best decision I ever made. It shows you that whatever your age anything is possible and now I feel so much younger. Irene Keen, ‘Greatest Loser’ and ‘Woman of the Year.

T

he 84 year old who suffered with weight problems for the past 10 years had given up after a knee operation and having to use a stick to help her walk. She tried different diets and nothing worked until her daughter told her that she was going to attend a her local slimming world group, as she had been told how fantastic food optimising and the extra easy plan was and it encouraged you to fill up on satisfying yet healthy everyday foods like, Fruit, vegetables, lean meats, fish, pasta potatoes tice and pulses without weighing

or measuring. Irene wasn’t very optimistic but agreed to go along to support her daughter. But now it has changed her life. She looks forward to the group every week and her friends and family are amazed at how well she has done. Slimming World consultant Elaine Dove said “It’s an absolute pleasure having Irene in the group she is an inspiration to us all. At 84 years old she is proof that you can lose weight and age isn’t against you. She has been entered into lots of our competitions and has won Miss Slinky.

MONEY MATTERS

by Pete Bird, Bird & Laws Certified Public Accountants

Do you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Laws on info@birdandlaws.co.uk and, if of general interest, it will be published here!

Question: Thanks to a Yaxley resident, who asks, “Am I correct in assuming that the state pension is paid gross without deduction of income tax”? Answer: Yes state pensions are always paid gross. However, if you have other income, like a personal pension, your personal allowances, (currently £10,600 for 2015/2016 tax year) are reduced by the amount of your state pension. The balance of allowances will be set against that other income and shown in your PAYE coding notice.

Appointing a New Accountant and Tax Advisor: Many Accountants like to say it is a difficult thing to do and try to instil the thought that it takes time and will cost money. The fact is, it can be done fairly easily with minimum of fuss, although it is not a decision to be taken lightly if you have built a good working relationship with your accountant. But of course, businesses move on, expand, contract, and even your accountants own business may change. If your current firm of accountants no longer ‘fits’ your business… If you feel they are too large and treat you as just another client number, rather than an individual.. ● Or too small for your growing business and you worry if they can handle the complexities of your business… ● Or you’re simply not getting the service you and your business deserve… ● ●

… then perhaps it’s time to think about changing your accountant. The accounting profession has a clear procedure in place for clients who decide to change accountants. YOUNG GAZETTE

The Key to a successful summer school

by Mel Elliott

Take a group of young people aged 7-18, from different backgrounds, with different acting abilities, all of whom long for the opportunity to take to the stage. Add to this a number of professional actors, choreographers and musicians. Mix all of this enthusiastic energy during a couple of weeks in the summer holidays and you have ... Key Youth Theatre Summer School!

A

n air of apprehension swept through the buzz of excitement as family and friends took their seats in the Key Theatre. We would be watching our children perform after only week of rehearsals. My daughter had been rehearsing avidly; dancing round the garden, singing songs in the summer sunshine, with only me and the dog watching. She held onto her script tightly but it was clear she was enjoying every second of it. Her only previous experience on stage were the school plays, where, like many children, she was more than a little stagestruck. So, as I took to my seat, I am sure I wasn’t the only parent to feel almost as much trepidation as their child! The lights dimmed, and the auditorium fell silent, all eyes were fixed firmly on the stage before us. Suddenly, the curtains of anticipation surrender to bright, stage lights, a wall of live sound surrounds us and about 150 budding youngsters embrace the stage with a tornado of enchanting chorus and spirited dance. It was a powerfully captivating impact. Truly breathtaking!

From that moment on, nothing but the eager applause and cheering from the audience would punctuate the relentless show of energetic prowess radiating from the stage as four age groups, each performing one half-hour production (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Avenue Q, Princess and the Frog and Evita). Word perfect, pitch perfect, confident enjoyment shone from each and every child. And, despite the display of intricate choreography and a challenging script. even the really young children ably mastered the challenge. Clever stage management also gave each child an opportunity to stand in the spotlight at some point during the performance. None of the children, even those who had only experienced a week of theatre school, would have looked particularly out of place on the West End stage! I have rarely seen my daughter so selfassured anywhere, yet there she was on a main stage with a huge audience and a fairly major role ...not a line, a step, or a note out of place! In that short week, she had come a long way from school plays and even those garden rehearsals.

Key Youth Theatre

Pictured: Sophie Lawrence & Louisa Jaggard

Renowned for providing an unbeatable summer experience, the Summer School is the best in the Eastern region: and they really do prove it. The fun-filled adventure through acting, movement, music and singing which ends in a spectacular performance on the Key Theatre’s Stage is highly recommended and judging by the comments of parents and children after the performance, there is very little any of us have experienced quite like it. Well done KYT and Kindred Drama .... absolutely brilliant!

TOTSTOP PARTY Local baby and toddler group, Totstop, recently celebrated its 10th birthday with a special party at Stanground Baptist Church.

T

otstop was set up by members of the church 10 years ago, to provide a place of play and friendship for local families in a fun, safe and welcoming environment. It has been run by Jane Carter, supported over the years by different members of the church and volunteers, including mums of children who have attended the group and moved on to school. The birthday party was attended by 21 children and their parents or

childminders, alongside past and present helpers. The children enjoyed their usual indoor and outdoor play activities before tucking into a feast of party food and blowing out ten candles on a specially made birthday cake. The group runs every Friday, apart from school holidays, from 9:4511:00 am and costs £1 per family, which includes refreshments.

The Sky is Falling! by Mark Teague

Chicken Little thinks that the sky is falling - and inspires a dance craze! When an acorn hits Chicken Little on the head, she panics and screeches, “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!” Squirrel, who knew a thing or two about acorns, tried to set the record straight, as did the other animals. The chickens started dancing; they moonwalked, they mamboed, and they did the twist. Pretty soon the other animals joined them. You can’t blame someone for wanting to dance, even if the sky isn’t really falling.

he effects deteriorate to more than just losing keys. As Alzheimer’s progresses, patients suffer severe problems with memory loss, communication, reasoning and orientation, leading sufferers to develop out of character behaviour, such as agitation and aggression. In the latter stages the patient can even experience difficulty with walking and eating unaided.

There is a temptation to think ‘it will never happen to me’ however one in six people over 80 are victims, making it increasingly likely that either you or a loved one will be affected. This September, Memory Walks will be taking place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to raise money and dementia awareness. The Peterborough Memory Walk is taking place at Ferry Meadows Country Park

on Sunday 20 September. We would like to encourage as many people as possible start fundraising today! If more incentive were needed, research shows that people who adopt a healthy lifestyle, especially from mid-life onwards are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease, so sign up today and make a difference to your life and the lives of sufferers all over the UK.

Park Farm Pumas awarded Huntingdonshire Charter Standard Club of the year 2015! It gives me great pleasure and an enormous sense of pride to officially announce that Park Farm Puma FC have been awarded the Huntingdonshire FA Community award for Charter Standard Club of the Year.

C

ongratulations to all the winners. Presentations will take at St Neots Town FC at the start of the new football season. Ciaran McAuley, Chairman of Park Farm Pumas stated “...I personally want to thank all the players and parents for their amazing support over the years but I specifically want to call out all of the fantastic volunteers, coaches and backroom staff at our club - without whom we simply would not exist. This fantastic group of people don’t do this for praise, thanks or trophies but

rather for the realisation and knowledge that we are making a real difference and having a positive influence on the lives of the young footballers we coach. It is, however, wonderful to have this level of recognition and appreciation, and to know that we are doing this the right way. Thank you so much to THE FA for this award and to everyone involved behind the scenes in the running of our Charter Standard Club of the Year and here’s to another fantastic year for Park Farm Pumas in 2015/16.”

We are pleased to announce The FA Community Award winners 2015. The FA Community Awards presented by McDonald’s aim to recognise and reward people across the country that make a difference to grassroots football in their local community – the people who dedicate their time to developing tomorrow’s young talent and help ensure safety and best practice in tens of thousands of clubs up and down the country. The awards offer a chance to all those involved in grassroots football to shout about the person, or team of people that have made a real difference to their experience whilst playing or just being involved in the beautiful game. The County winners don’t just volunteer at a local club, they are the life and soul of it; they put their life into bettering the community and the lives of those people within it. The Woolpack This has been a busy time for landlady Linda, as she has just been awarded the prestigious CAMRA Gold Award for a good selection / service of real ales. There is always a tasty assortment available and I can particularly recommend the rhubarb one! In addition to this, Linda is tying the knot with her partner of 6 ½ years, Pete, on 25 September, in Rutland Water. Congratulations to them both! Once things quieten down, Linda will start looking for someone to join her (later in the year) to assist in the running of the pub and some of the catering.

The Heron The Heron boasts a 12 foot HD screen in their back room which will be showing all of the football this season on Saturdays and Sundays, with both BT Sport HD & Sky Sports HD. Free entry! Meri tells me the pub garden is looking wonderful, and is ideal for enjoying the sunshine over the summer. Their popular quiz is on every Tuesday night from 8pm, followed by Play Your Cards Right. Top tips for planting your tulip bulbs this autumn Now is a great time to be planting your spring flowering bulbs. Here, Adrian Nind, Managing Director at Bakker Spalding Garden Company, provides five top tips for your autumn gardening. 1

Preparation is key

The first step is to remove weeds and incorporate lots of compost or other organic matter when planting your bulbs. Bulbs grown in pots need good drainage so put plenty of pot shards in the bottom and use well-drained compost.

2

Select your bulbs early

With so many stunning spring flowers to choose from, selecting your flower bulbs is something you should do at an early stage. A recent survey we conducted revealed that the favourite colour plants here in the UK are red (23.5%) followed by purple (17.6%). We’ve seen a great deal of interest in our wide variety of tulips this year, including the ‘Exquisit’ tulip which resembles a double peony and the ‘Tropical Wave’ tulip which has a fantastic double yellow goblet.

3

Have your bulbs delivered just before you intend to plant them

Bulbs are sent directly from the nursery and are in optimum condition for planting. If you can’t plant them straight away, unpack the bulbs as soon as they arrive. Place them in a dry, dark place under 20°C and open the bags so that air can circulate.

4

Plant your bulbs correctly

Bulbs have very particular planting requirements, and should be planted in holes three to four times as deep as the bulb itself. Plant your bulbs in groups of at least six to ensure optimum results, and if you are unsure on which way the bulb should go into the soil, plant the bulb on its side: its stem will find its own way up to the surface!

5

Don’t forget to prepare your bulbs for next year!

We recommend feeding your tulip bulbs immediately after flowering – this gives the bulb time to store enough nutrients to ensure profuse flowering the following spring.

FINANCE

Keeping divorce costs down Divorce costs often hit the headlines when we learn that multimillionaires have spent £000s on their divorce, but in reality the ‘average’ divorce costs much less and there are ways to keep the costs down.

TOP TIPS FOR KEEPING COSTS DOWN 1 Take advantage of a free initial consultation At Woolley & Co we offer a free 30 minute consultation which allows us to obtain basic information about you and your circumstances and we can then discuss key issues in your situation and the options for dealing with them.

2 Consider all options for resolving any disputes There are now a number of methods for discussing and settling the financial and other issues that arise on separation or divorce such as negotiation or mediation. A lawyer will explore these with you. There is no ‘one size fits all’ solution.

3 Do your homework A lawyer cannot give you definite advice about a proposed financial settlement without full information. You can prepare by gathering together the documents and information your lawyer requires as early as possible. Do some thinking too. Consider where you and your children will live. If you want to stay in your home can you afford to do so? If the house is sold, could you afford to purchase a suitable property for you and your children? Speak to mortgage advisors to find out what your mortgage capacity is and to estate agents to see how much other suitable properties may cost.

Be clear on the costs from the start

Your lawyer should give you a breakdown of all the likely costs involved and in many cases will be able to offer a fixed price for the divorce or other specific stages. Perhaps the most important piece of advice I can give to keep costs down is that the more you can agree with your spouse, the cheaper your case is likely to be overall. Therefore, if possible, try to avoid ‘mud slinging’ and sticking to your guns over points of ‘principle’. You may be angry with your other half, but consider whether your reaction is going to assist in the long run. It is far easier to reach agreement with someone you can negotiate with. PETS’ PATCH

Is it time to

NEUTER? Once your pet is 6 months old it is a good idea, as part of a preventative health care scheme, to get your pet neutered. Why neuter your pet?

N

eutering is mainly recommended for medical benefits and should not change your pet’s character, but may help with certain undesirable traits such as aggression, dominant behaviour and the desire to roam. Your female pet’s risk of mammary cancer is very low if she is spayed before her first season, and she will be spared the risk of post season complications such as life threatening womb infections that can occur after any season. The hassle involved with bitches when they are in season is also taken away, as well as the mess. Some bitches even need to be kept housebound due to the unwanted attention from male dogs when out, which can be frustrating for both dog and owner.

Male dogs become less interested in females in season once they themselves have been neutered. Castration can also dramatically reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, including testicular and prostate cancer. And, of course, neutering is the best way to prevent any unwanted pregnancies!

So what does having your pet neutered involve? If your pet is female it is spayed removing both ovaries and the uterus. If your pet is male it is castrated removing both testicles.

Both procedures require a general anaesthetic, which carries a very small risk of complications at a young age. The length of time the operation takes will depend on whether your pet is a cat, dog or rabbit, as well as what breed and size it is. These procedures require a day’s stay at the vets; your pet is admitted in the morning and discharged the same day. They may need to return to the vets for post-operative checks and for stitches to be removed, but recovery usually takes just a few days to a week.

Change of name

for local accountants

We are pleased to announce that we have now changed our practice name from Bird & Co to Bird & Laws.

T

his follows Mark Laws FCCA joining the practice. Mark started working with wellknown local Yaxley accountant, Pete Bird FCPA last year, and we have decided to celebrate the success of this joining together of two local qualified and experienced accountants, by merging our practices together and changing the name to reflect both our personalities. Mark previously practised under the name of Prospect Accountancy from premises in Fletton and Pete as Bird & Co from their current offices in Holme Road Yaxley. We have also been joined by Lesley Bagnall MAAT who has taken over the preparation of clients VAT returns and payroll as well as other accountancy

Please visit our new website: www.birdandlaws.co.uk and taxation matters. In addition we have a couple of associate accountants who work with us on a regular basis, one of whom is currently awaiting the results of his final ACCA exams. We are now in a stronger position than ever to offer a full accountancy and taxation service, covering all areas, but still maintain a professional yet personal approach which we all consider very important. In this day and age, it is important that taxpayers deal with

not only qualified accountants, but proactive accountants as well and we consider ourselves to be at the forefront of this thinking and technology. We have therefore invested in a new website that can be found at www.birdandlaws.co.uk. This incorporates a secure website portal, managed by DocuSoft, where accounts and tax returns can be accessed and signed by clients as well as a means of exchanging other documents between us.

360 Cleaning Being a single mum of two children, working full time and living in a large four bedroom home I really struggle keeping up with my housework. My job means that on a Sunday I spend all day cleaning or spend quality time with my children. My choice is the children, they are not young for long and I want to give them some cracking memories.

S

o I have now called upon the help of local cleaning company 360 cleaning. I have used cleaners in the past but I have been very impressed with this company. Once I had made my enquiry, I was given an appointment with one of the owners and we sat and went through my requirements. He took note and wrote everything down which I was very impressed with. We worked out a regular convenient cleaning slot and my first clean was booked in. On the day of the clean, a professional 360 cleaning van pulled up which I was not expecting and out hopped three smartly dressed cleaners all wearing a 360 uniform. The ladies were all lovely, very polite, and cautious of my belongings.

28

They had a full plan with them which we went through before they started. During the clean the ladies kept in touch with me, asking various questions about which cleaning products I would prefer them to use on particular items and surfaces. The clean took approximately three hours and the end result was amazing. My house literally sparkled and smelt so fresh and clean! Finally, I asked TV cleaning personality Lynsey, Queen of Clean to come and inspect the house. Lynsey gave it a big thumbs up! I now can’t wait for my next clean. I highly recommended this company, amazing staff with amazing results!

The ladies were all lovely very polite and cautious of my belongings.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Old school barber shop with a modern twist Founded in 2008 by owner Rai Devita, The Barber Pole takes you back to a time when looking good as a man was all about attention to detail.

F

rom the traditional and short haircuts to an old-fashioned straightedge shave, The Barber Pole is all about nostalgia of yesteryear, but with a modern twist. Its trained professionals are schooled both in the timehonoured traditions of barbering and shaving. They deliver their work with passion and precision and a friendly, informal atmosphere is all part of the service. They pride themselves on giving great advice on styling queries and techniques and will hook you up with the latest looks as well as a fresh interpretation of the classics. Flexibility is important too. People live different lives and The Barber Pole can adapt to them like no other barber shop. As well as the existing Monday to Saturday walk-in service, pre-booked appointments at various times throughout the week are also available. It’s the best of both worlds and this means you’ll never miss out.

With more than 26 years’ experience, we are dedicated to our craft and will work hard to give you a haircut you can be proud of.

Cosmic Katie ‘s Stars September 2015

Leo July 24-August 23

By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer Work and ongoing commitments will prove demanding. But they mustn’t ruin your chances of enjoying some near perfect times with somebody very close. Make it clear that there are times when you are simply not available, as certain people assume that they have a monopoly on you.

Virgo August 24-September 23 The longer it takes to achieve something, the more you are going to value it. So, whether it’s playing hard to get or if a particular project or venture appears to have stalled, keep your chin up and don’t overreact to the obstacles you encounter this month.

Libra September 24-October 23 If loved ones are proving awkward and appear to be enjoying their new found stubbornness, give them a wide berth, or else you’ll end up saying things you later regret. The results are coming in now regarding work, and all your effort and determination will pay off.

Scorpio October 24-November 22 Follow up on your promises this month and show how you intend to fulfil them, empty words will backfire on you if you’re not careful, it’s actions that speak the loudest right now so show people you mean business and stay true to your word.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Romance is in the air and it’s an excellent month for love, even if you are in a long distance relationship, there’s chemistry everywhere and you’ll be feeling happy. Money could be slow to arrive and financial negotiations protracted, but you will get there in the end.

Capricorn December 22-January 20 You and a partner are in synch this month and the emphasis will be on your home life. Focus your attention and energies on spending time with loved ones, enjoying experiences and creating happy memories. Be savvy with your money, shop around for the best deals. Aquarius January 21-February 19 Something left hanging in the air is niggling at the back of your mind and you’re determined not to let certain things pass you by this time. Confrontation doesn’t sit well with you, so be tactical instead, you will get all the answers you need.

Pisces February 20-March 20 Mentally and physically, you are eager to spread your wings, but events beyond your control this month, may make you think twice about taking a trip or committing to a decision. Be sensitive towards a loved one as they could be facing a difficult time.

Aries March 21-April 20 You are organised, efficient and ready for action, but not everything may go according to plan, so make sure you factor in flexibility to your repertoire too. Pay attention to any health matters either with you or a loved one, if something doesn’t ‘feel right’ then seek advice.

There’s no room in your life for feeble excuses, so don’t allow anyone to pull the wool over your eyes. It’s time to raise your game at work, as no matter how you try and avoid it, you will have extra work loaded on to your shoulders, but the reward will be worth it.

Gemini May 22-June 22 Although you shouldn’t have much to complain about, there are minor aspects of a partnership or business relationship that could be improved, make this the month during which you make a clean sweep in order for everything to run smoothly and efficiently. Cancer June 23-July 23

Nothing ever stays the same and accepting change can be hard, but you can neither kid nor lie to yourself about a person or situation any longer, so embrace this new founded strength, energy and determination - You are a formidable character and a force to be reckoned with.

If it is your birthday this month . . . There’s plenty of romance in the mix this month and someone you meet at a social event could become a serious interest, you’ll have plenty in common there’ll be no shortage of conversation. Set some boundaries with friends and family and make it clear your resources aren’t limitless.

CONSUMER ADVICE

Scam Awareness Scam Awareness Month ran throughout July 2015, with the intention of assuring consumers are informed and are ready to talk about their own experiences to help prevent others. Sporting the headline “Don’t be rushed, Don’t be hushed”, the campaign is supported nationally by Trading Standards and other organisations..

E

Key points to remember and share:

ach year millions of people in the UK are victims of scammers. Estimates put the figure lost to scammers by as much as £5billion. The truth is – with reporting levels as low as 5% for some types of scams – the real impact cannot be quantified. Scams are crimes that affect many different groups of people with distressing, and sometimes disastrous consequences. Many go unreported either because the consumer does not spot something amiss or because people who become victims of scams feel a sense of shame. To understand and prevent such crimes, it is essential that consumers get the information they need to spot scams in the first place; report them when they are targeted and get the advice they need to help protect them in future. Don’t suffer in silence – speak out about scams and help others to not fall victim to the scammers.

• • • • • • • • • • • •

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. It you haven’t bought a ticket – you can’t win it. You shouldn’t have to pay anything to get a prize. If in doubt, don’t reply. Bin it, delete it or hang up. Persuasive sales patter? Just say: “No thank you”. Contacted out of the blue – be suspicious. Take your time – resist pressure to make a decision straight away. Never send money to someone you don’t know. Walk away from job ads that ask for money in advance. Your bank will never attend your home to collect cash, your PIN, payment card or chequebook if you are a victim of fraud. Your bank will never phone you to ask for your PIN number. Genuine computer firms do not make unsolicited calls to help you fix your computer.
