Coffee morning Hayley and Dan Stapleton residents from Ellwood Avenue held a Charity Coffee recently at Stanground Baptist Church for two amazing charities - Great Ormond Street Hospital and The Sick Children's Trust.
What was it like studying at Stanground Academy? September is time to go back to school and our work experience student Smilte Eidininkaite a year 12 student from Stanground Academy took some time out of her studies to find out what other local students thought is was like studying at our local academy. ‘I liked how Stanground Academy had majorly funny and nice teachers who not only are loving towards students but also supportive. This is difficult to find in other secondary schools, but fortunately Stanground had a lot of really lovely teachers that made being in school worthwhile and less draining. Sixth form was actually so fun because it was a completely different experience to being in year 11 as I felt we had more freedom in that we had our own area for break and lunch as well as being allowed to leave during these times to get food from outside. However, a negative would be that changes were made too little too late, when we were allowed to go home during our frees it was exam time and so we didn’t really get to benefit from this change as we could have if it was made sooner.’ SOHA - Studied at Stanground Academy for 7 years.
These 2 charities are just some of the charities that have supported them when their Daughter Sophie was born in March with many complex conditions. A huge thanks to everyone who came and supported them with this charity coffee morning it was greatly attended by the community and helped raise an amazing £590 for these charities. More charity events will follow including a quiz. To follow Sophie’s Story and any events they have planned see our Facebook page Baby Sophie Elizabeth Stapleton.
Peterborough Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild If you have an interest in embroidery or textile arts come and join us. Listen to a range of speakers and take part in mini workshops and full day workshops learning new techniques, or improving and developing existing skills. The group meets at Orton Wistow Community Hall, Napier Place, Orton Wistow, Peterborough PE2 6XN, usually on the last Saturday of the month from September to June. Meetings take place from 2–4pm. Doors open at 1.30pm for tea and coffee. SEPTEMBER BULLETIN FROM
CAMBRIDGESHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE The school summer holidays are coming to a close and we hope you have enjoyed the time with family, going on holiday or even creating your own adventures at home. Before the children head off back to school, take the opportunity to teach your children about fire safety and design your very own fire escape plan for them to share with teachers and other students back in the classroom. We recommend every household has a fire escape plan and regularly runs through it with the family – especially when guests are coming to stay. Here are a few things to consider when writing yours: • Everyone should know where the window and door keys are. • Your normal way out of the house is your best escape route so always keep it clear of clutter - think of the difficulties you'll have using this route in pitch darkness or smoke. • Walk your escape route with the rest of your family or housemates and make sure everyone can open windows and doors easily. If you, your neighbour or family member might be vulnerable or have trouble escaping from their house in a fire, get in touch with us to see if we can help by calling 0800 917 9994.
‘I think the teachers are very hardworking and really aim to help when students are stuck, you always feel like when there are issues that there’s support ready, anyone is willing to listen to your problems if there are any, especially in sixth form. The teachers also try not to give students too much work, they understand we need breaks and some social time which is nice. However I do think there should be more time invested in creating clubs and outside school trips and activates, there’s not much to do except attend and revise the classes you’ve chosen for you’re A-levels or GCSE’s. I also think the school needs to improve its hygiene and overall cleanliness a bit’. Name withheld - Studied at Stanground Academy for 7 years. ‘I liked the teachers, I always had good teachers they were always nice and funny. I dislike the general layout of the school; the corridors aren’t wide enough so it’s really hectic during change over. There are some rules that I feel are pointless like walking up or down the stairs in a certain direction or being unable to access some stairs and having to take an alternative route to your lesson, that you become late to. The classrooms also lack colour and character I think but they are quite spacious’. Name withheld - Studied at Stanground Academy for 7 years.
St Michael’s Community Festival and Fun Day ‘There’s not much going on in Stanground’ - a comment often heard in Stanground! But it’s just not true – you only have to look and there’s plenty. Over the past few years St Michael’s Festival and Fun Day on the last Saturday of September has grown. This year lots of other groups will be joining us; Sue Ryder, 3rd Nene Scouts, Stanground Baptist Church, St Michael’s Church School, Ahmadiyya Muslim Community to name a few. Everyone is looking forward to the Old Fashioned Sports which were such a success last year, and there will be lots of other competitions and fun, stalls, the art exhibition, and food and drink to enjoy. It's not too late if you want to be part of it, just contact us through our Facebook page. Look out for the event leaflets, because if you bring one with you on the day you can enter a free prize draw. Also at the Festival we will be asking local people what they think about our church and our church site. As the population has grown there is more and more need for community facilities, and we would like to know how best we can provide what is needed. Looking forward to meeting many of you on the day. Stanground C of E Churches May God bless and keep you, Anne Shorter, Vicar of Stanground.

Hybrid cars, warranty clauses and servicing
Does your vehicle warranty mean that you are restricted to costly servicing at a Main Dealer? – NO It is a common misconception, encouraged by vehicle main dealers, that unless you have your car serviced with them, your warranty is no longer valid. As long as your car is serviced by a VAT registered garage and genuine parts are used then you can maintain your vehicle’s warranty at a fraction of the cost. At Excel Auto Care all services are carried out to Main Dealer specification, and at the customer’s request genuine parts used, to ensure that you are no longer bound by your warranty and forced to pay high prices. Don’t let zero emissions prove costly….. Despite the rise in popularity of hybrid cars, there are still few garages who can offer Vehicle Technicians who have been specifically trained for this type of vehicle. Mistakes in the servicing of this type of vehicle can cause untold damage to the delicate systems and can end up costing £000’s in repairs. At Excel Auto Care our Hybrid Trained Technician has been working on these vehicle types since they first came onto the market 17 years ago. His specialist knowledge and experience means that your Hybrid car is in the very best of hands at Excel Auto Care. Don’t just take our word for it….take a look at our reviews and see what our customers say about us. 01733 685855 | www.excelautocare.net

Cardea Community Church
July and August at Cardea Community Church have seen some happy times celebrating different events together here in the community at the Sports Pavilion!
On July 16th we laid on a Summer Breakfast which was enjoyed by children and adults from Cardea and the wider area. There was a video and craft activities for children telling a story that is in the Bible which Jesus told, showing how He knows all about each one of us, young and old. The following week on July 23rd we had reason to celebrate again as we thanked God for the life of a baby boy, Ezra, born to a family in the church. Family and friends travelled from as far away as Essex to join us. What a great place the Pavilion is to hold such events in and enjoy lunch together afterwards. Finally, on August 6th we had a sunny day to enjoy a BBQ at one of our homes. We love to welcome new faces to our meetings on Sunday mornings. We always start with refreshments at 10.30am and are a friendly bunch! We're ordinary people doing ordinary jobs but have discovered the difference it makes knowing for ourselves this Jesus of the Bible! If you're not someone who "does church " but wants to give it a try, there is always a welcome!

Taxation, Making Tax Digital The government has announced major changes to its Making Tax Digital for business (MTD) proposals: MTD will initially only apply for VAT registered businesses and will be mandated into HMRC's plans for quarterly bookkeeping and reporting from April 2019. MTD will not become compulsory for other business or taxes until April 2020. Proposed updated timetable: • VAT registered businesses, with turnover over the VAT threshold will be mandated into the MTD reporting system from 2019. • Property landlords and small business trading below the VAT threshold will join MTD from 2020, although they may opt in to MTD earlier if they wish to do so. • There is no news on what is proposed for companies, however the government is currently looking at reform of corporation tax. The government says that it has listened and Mel Stride, Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Paymaster General said: 'Businesses agree that digitising the tax system is the right direction of travel. However, many have been worried about the scope and pace of reforms. We have listened very carefully to their concerns and are making changes so that we can bring the tax system into the digital age in a way that is right for all businesses.' HMRC has already begun piloting the MTD services and will continue to do so. It will start to pilot MTD for VAT by the end of 2017 with a live pilot starting in Spring 2018. These changes will be legislated for as part of the Finance Bill 2017. Changes to VAT reporting will come into effect from April 2019. From that date, businesses above the VAT threshold have to provide their VAT information to HMRC through Making Tax Digital software.

PECT teams up with Anglian Water to help reduce sewerage pipe blockages in Peterborough The environmental charity PECT, working in partnership with Anglian Water, will be shortly be visiting households in Peterborough to help reduce the number of sewerage pipe blockages across the city. With local residents’ help, the charity is working to help protect our rivers, wildlife and environment. The friendly PECT team will be visiting your area shortly with a free goodie bag and tips on what you can do to reduce blockages and save money! Keep It Clear is Anglian Water’s campaign to help reduce the potential flooding and pollution caused by avoidable blockages. The programme works with communities in a variety of engaging ways, helping to spread awareness of the issue
and to support long-term behaviour change. PECT’s Selina Wilson explains: “It is fantastic to be working with the Anglian Water team and the city’s residents to help ‘Keep it Clear’ in Peterborough this summer! We’re looking forward to meeting lots of local people and working together to make a different to our environment.” Collette Parker, Keep it Clear Community Engagement Manager, said: “Wrongly flushed fats, oils and greases along with other ‘unflushable’ items cause real problems
in the sewer network often resulting in clogged sewer pipes which can cause untreated sewage to run into homes, gardens, streets and even end up in rivers, the sea and on beaches. “These ‘unflushables’ cause over 30,000 blockages a year, 80% of which could be avoided. That’s why we’ve teamed up with PECT to raise awareness about what we can all do to help protect our environment.“ The service will only take up a few minutes of your time and is completely free to take part in.
If you would like more information, please call 01733 568408 or email info@pect.org.uk. You can also visit www.pect.org.uk for further details. For more information about Anglian Water, visit www.anglianwater.co.uk

WASPS There's a sting in their tale!
A
lthough wasps are much maligned, they eat flies, aphids, caterpillars and other invertebrates, making them an important insect-controlling predator. They are also important pollinators for some species of orchid and figs! With a mouthful of wood fibres, the queen uses the saliva in her mouth to break down the wood fibers until they form a soft paper pulp. She then flies her mouthful of paper pulp to her chosen building site to begin construction of the nest. Wasps are amazing architects and master craftswomen (all workers are female), helping to form the soft paper pulp into combs of multiple hexagonal cells. Wasp nests are home to some of our most beautiful, pollinating hoverflies. The social wasp’s lot in life is also cause for sympathy not swatting. The worker wasp is born into an apparent job for life – going out and foraging for grubs to feed
the developing larvae in the wasp nest which will be destined to become next year’s queens. Every time the wasp delivers food there is a reward of a sweet sugary fluid from the larva gradually addicting the worker wasps to sweetness. Then, at some point in August, the developing queens all hatch and fly the nest to feed-up and prepare for winter hibernation resulting in mass unemployment and a loss of addictive sweetness. The disenfranchised worker wasps fly off in search of substitutes often feasting on windfall fruit and exhibiting another unfortunate trend in that they are bad drunks as alcohol makes them irritable. So remember, next time a wasp bothers your garden enjoyment, it is just a recently unemployed addict searching for a fix and a very aggressive drunk, more in need of a social worker than a fly swatter.
wildlife
During August and September wasps are often viewed as public enemy number one as they swoop in on picnics and barbecues alike with irritable intent.

LAWN CARE AT THE END OF SUMMER As we come to the end of summer there’s plenty of work still to be done on our lawns to keep them looking great in the months to come. Sisters Sarah and Jo who run our local GreenThumb lawn care business give us some top tips. Sarah and Jo say “we’re busy applying our late summer fertiliser and weedkill on lawns and we’re noticing the recent rain has caused a fresh crop of weeds to germinate; we’re on a mission to ensure these are gone before the end of the season”. Sarah and Jo are also on hand to give advice on fairy rings, toadstools, lawn pests and brown patches on lawns which can appear at this time of year and they provide a free lawn analysis service for anyone who wants help with their lawn. Here are Sarah and Jo’s top tips for keeping lawns in good condition and managing moss as we head into autumn.
1 Rake up and remove falling leaves regularly A carpet of leaves left on the lawn will smother the lawn and starve it of light. This causes the grass to weaken and disease and moss will invade. 2 Continue to mow your lawn Over the autumn and winter keep your lawn cut if the grass grows. It’s a myth not to cut your grass over the winter so on a dry day give it a cut on a high setting. Grass left to get too long will become weak, it will be slow to dry which then attracts moss. 3 Scarify your lawn Rake out the dead matter that has accumulated in your lawn. This can comprise of grass clippings, leaves, dead stems, roots and old moss all mixed up with other decaying or partially decayed organic matter. Moss loves this matted debris in a lawn which we call ‘thatch’ so it’s best to get it out. Scarification is the name given to removing thatch from the lawn with a machine and its best to do this over the coming months and before next spring. Sarah and Jo say “when we scarify a lawn we rake up and bag all the rubbish that comes out of the lawn and for a small charge we can take it away if our customers don’t want to deal with it themselves. We like to make lawn scarification completely hassle free for our customers” 4 Apply a feed and moss control Use a micronutrient autumn/winter feed that will give a stronger, greener, more robust lawn that’s better able to cope with the rigours of winter. “At GreenThumb we use a treatment that also dehydrates any moss that may have built up, helping to control it by slowing down its activity and keeping moss spores at a low level. One or two of these treatments over the darker and damper months of the year is ideal” says Jo. 5 Treat any weeds with a selective weedkill This time of year, after all the rain we’ve had, weeds are still actively growing so if you want to get on top of them before next spring now is a good time. If you don’t want to do it yourself just give GreenThumb a call. If you’d like us to look after your lawn for you or for a FREE lawn analysis, contact Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028. Don’t get beaten by the scammers
by Eileen Le Voi
None of us like the thought of our friends, family or even ourselves being scammed – and duped into parting with cash or even personal security information.
R
ogue traders, hi-tech scammers or cowboy service operators can convince and catch even the most wary of people off their guard; with a cold call knock at the door or what seems like a genuine telephone call or marketing literature. Sadly, statistics show that the most vulnerable when it comes to being duped are the over70s in terms of financial loss – to the tune of a staggering £4,500 from a number of different types of scams. And according to figures from the Citizens Advice Bureau, people aged between 61–80 are more likely to be victims of investment fraud, with victims losing an average of £10,000. The same can apply to traders either knocking at the door and suggesting work needs doing to your property or through leaflet drops. Always check the credentials of traders if you are in doubt and certainly before you agree to any work – AND part with your cash. We recently had a case of a disabled customer who parted with £1,000 cash – half the fee quoted for driveway repairs – to a trader who did half a day’s work and was never seen again. Attempts to
If you are in the older age bracket, it is also worth remembering: With thousands of bogus health products for sale online, the best advice is to proceed with real caution when considering any new medicine or healthcare product. Although there are legitimate companies who make a living by tracking down heirs, they don’t do it in this way. If you’re asked for a fee for a report, it’s very likely to be bogus. Don’t respond to competitions you haven’t entered and never reveal your bank details or pay fees in advance to release your prize.
contact him and retrieve the money failed, leaving the customer to face five months of misery before the project was remedied by Safe Local Trades and Yaxley business, Des Watt Roadways. Our advice to anyone – who is either contacted by telephone, email or in person – is not to be afraid to ask questions and challenge their motives.
When it comes to cold callers – never be pressured into making an on the spot decision, signing up for any work and indeed, handing over any money. If in doubt about the reputation of any professional trader – visit www.safelocaltrades. com for reliable and recommended local traders or telephone 0800 014 1832.
Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople across a wide range of areas – all of which come with a customer seal of approval. Go to www.safelocaltrades.com or telephone 01733 530019

It's All Rock n Roll To Me - Extract from the memoirs of Mark "Perks"
I have listed the live music for September but feel I haven't much else to say this month - as I am shocked, extremely saddened & reeling from the death of another local musical legend (& friend); the much loved, funny & charismatic Mr Mark Perks (45) – lead singer of The Rocket Dogs – who passed away on 3 August. I have written a few words to give you all an insight into this very talented & CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF MARK PERKS popular local musician.

"We've been the Rocket Dogs, & you've been amazing!" That’s the last line I use, no matter how big or small the gig has been; our drummer is stood up at his kit riding his cymbals & hammering the bass drum & I can hear the thud of an open E string on the bass guitar. The two guitarists are soloing miles out of key to each other - there is a proper rock ending that any band would be proud of. The crowd are clapping & yelling 'Encore', & me, well, I'm stood sweating profusely, grinning from ear to ear, applauding the crowd in front of me - who are equally sweaty. I can smell the alcohol - they're that close. Is this Nottingham Rock City?, Hammersmith Odeon?, The Whiskey on Sunset Strip?, maybe Wembley? No! Ladies & Gents, this is the Swiss Cottage, Woodston, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. Not a city re-nouned for it's rock culture. Ladies & Gentlemen Welcome to the World of Pub Bands!'
Mark Perks, or simply 'Perks' to many, was undoubtedly one of Peterborough's finest frontmen. With his band of brothers, he raised the roof of a great many pubs and venues in the area, sending us home with a smile and a sore throat from the rousing sing alongs he never failed to deliver. He loved music, and spent his first ever month's pay on a double-bass drum kit (aged 17). His first gig - at The Peacock - ended with him being carted off to hospital badly cut by flying glass. He was far more concerned about how his bloodied drum kit would get home! He played bass with cover band Crash & Burn, continually auditioning singers, until Mark stepped forward. Perks was resplendently tattooed. For his 18th birthday, Perks got a Grim Reaper arm tattoo. Plenty more followed, including his favourite, Aerosmith inspired 'Life's a Journey, not a Destination'. His idol was Nicky Sixx of Motley Crew. He loved them, The Cult, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, The Kinks, and many more. He even attended an opera with Kaz and his guilty secret with brother in law, Kevin, was liking Take That! Brimming with talent, he could play the bass, guitar (owning 9 of them!), drums, keyboard, piano and saxophone. He also played a mean tambourine! Perks joined the Rocket Dogs 5 years ago as their charismatic frontman and they became a very popular, tight-knit group. They headlined the Beer Fest and were due to be headlining again this year at the 40th. They opened the Willow Festival in 2012 live on Radio Cambridgeshire, headlined Woofstock at the Angel in Yarwell (for three years), and the Yaxley Festival (for two years) to mention only a few. Mark performed his last gig with the boys (Staceman, Tezza, Mike and Jesse (originally Graham) at Woofstock on Saturday 29 July before passing away unexpectedly less than a week later. You can't talk about Perks without mentioning his best buddy (and band

mate) Terry Barter (Tez) – they had been friends for 34 years. They were inseparable and got into lots of mischief bunking off school so they could buy Bon Jovi's 'Slippery When Wet'. It was only fitting that he should be the best man when Perks recently married his absolute soulmate Kaz. Brought up to be very family orientated, Mark had lots of time for them and loved to spoil his nieces and nephews. His sister Clare and Aunty Caroline attended Kaz's hen do. He loved American football – particularly Dallas Cowboys and was a loyal West Ham supporter – attending matches with his dad from the age of 4. Kaz and Perks met about 4 years ago through Tez. Their relationship quickly blossomed and they moved in together in North Street. He was always very dapper, and the couple earned themselves the nickname of the 'Posh & Becks of Stanground'. He married his 'Monkey Face' at Orton Hall Hotel on 24 June 2017. Perks kept journals going back 25 years – more recently using his special Hugo Boss pen. He loved architecture, and travel, with a great love of Italy where he spent his last few weeks on honeymoon and holidaying with close pals and joint best man Steve Read and his wife Jan. Italy was idyllic; enjoying fantastic food, drinks, views and the happiest times with his besties before returning back to his work family at AB Agri. Perks was such a natural performer, engaging the crowd with his enthusiasm, fun, lust for life and happiness. He was always doing impressions and was very amusing. Even though he loved his performing life, he was probably happiest at home in his man corner in his silky 'lounge wear' or in his 'dog house' man cave. He leaves behind his new wife Kaz, his dog Pip, his sister Clare and proud parents Joyce & Chris, countless friends and legions of fans. Perks slipped away in his sleep to join many other musical stars – maybe he'll be forming a band with some of the greats...Let's Rock, There's a Good Boy! by Roz Wright
