Welcome... ...to the Easter 2017 issue of Term Times. While sitting down to consider what to write this edition it struck me how much I have come to rely on the advice of others, particularly in relation to my ongoing journey to become a ‘Better Mum’. ‘Better Mum’ only found out about Ashton & Parsons teething powders thanks to equally harassed new parents. ‘Better Mum’ learnt about the most popular Rainbows and Beavers packs from discussions in the playground. And ‘Better Mum’ always relies on top tips from TripAdvisor when it comes to booking the best family holidays. In my case the famous African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” is all too true, although my village is made up of friends, family, wellmeaning strangers...and the World Wide Web. Here at Term Times we'd like to think that, for many of our readers, we fall into the well-meaning strangers camp. We aim to provide useful and informative editorial content, keep you up to date with news, let you know about family-friendly activities and give you the chance to win some great prizes in our numerous competitions. In the spirit of information sharing, this issue we have great advice about choosing a family solicitor, the launch of a new community arts project, an A-Z of Easter activities, free waste and recycling educational workshops for schools and much more. We are also launching our second Education Awards, in partnership with Mana Education, so we need you to nominate top teachers and teaching assistants, school office teams and school projects. We hope you enjoy our magazine and have a wonderful Easter holiday.

Amanda

Froglife launches The Toad Bake Off Peterborough-based wildlife conservation charity Froglife has launched a new culinary competition as part of its Year of the Toad. A recent study by Froglife, and partners from Switzerland’s University of Zurich, revealed on average common toads have declined by 68 percent in the UK in the last 30 years. The Toad Bake Off aims to raise awareness and funds to tackle this issue. Froglife is looking for bakers of all ages to share their toad-themed creations - from cakes to biscuits, pies to bread. The recipe receiving the most ‘Likes’ after a public vote on Facebook will win a Prince Toad door stop from Dora Designs and a Froglife goody bag. There are also 2nd and 3rd prizes up for grabs. Information packs have been sent to schools inviting youngsters to bake and then sell their creations to fundraise for the campaign. If your school would like to take part call 01733 602102 for a campaign pack. Entries should be submitted, by Tuesday 25 April, via Froglife’s Facebook page (www.facebook. com/froglife) or Twitter account www.twitter.com/froglifers with the hashtag #YearoftheToad or to yearofthetoad@froglife.org For more about the competition and Froglife’s Year of the Toad campaign, visit

Children’s hair tuition Between work commitments, household chores, and the many other pressures on our busy lives it’s often hard to squeeze in much-needed quality time with our children.

N

ow Peterborough hair and beauty salon Serenity Loves has come up with the perfect solution...and it only takes an hour out of your hectic schedule. The award-winning salon is offering children’s hair tutorial packages, perfect for a bit of bonding and sharing quality time with your little one. Whether you want to learn the basics to tackle the school morning hair horror, confused by a daughter who asks you to do plaits and up-dos, or simply need a skills boost to help create the looks your child likes, then Serenity Loves has a choice of two tutorials. One is geared towards absolute beginners and the other is for those who want to learn more advanced hair styles and techniques. Both one-hour salon packages are run by an experienced stylist and cover the basics of children’s hair care and maintenance.

The absolute beginners session’s hands-on hair style training will teach you how to master basic ponytails, plaits and buns. While those already competent in the basic skills should choose the more advanced tuition when you can learn to French braid, conquer the famous Elsa plait from Disney animation Frozen, or similar. Both packages also include a starter pack of hair essentials, worth £15, which includes hair bands, grips, detangling spray and more. And there’s a take-home guide with step-by-step instructions on the styles learnt and a general fact sheet on children’s hair care and maintenance. The hair tuition packages are not only ideal for parents - grandparents, aunties and godparents can also experience these fun and informative sessions and learn new skills while spending quality one-to-one time with their young loved ones.

For more details visit www.serenityloves.co.uk

The tutorials cost £35 each, but during the Easter holidays Serenity Loves is offering the sessions for the reduced price of £25 each.

g n i t a e r C The Legend of Hampton Detective [Insert Name], a show in Peterborough city centre by Lamphouse Theatre Company. Photo: Luke Payn Smoke and Mirrors, staged by Lamphouse Theatre Company and Jumped Up Theatre. Photo: Thomas Byron Photography

You may have heard tales of the Fen Tigers that once roamed the flatlands to the east of Peterborough; you might know of the legend of Robin Goodfellow; you may even have seen a giant black dog running through peat fields in the pitch black; but you probably haven’t heard of a folk tale from Hampton. Well now all that’s about to change… Arts organisation Peterborough Presents has announced its first magical project for families in Hampton, the opportunity to be involved in creating the community’s very own legend. The project will be run by theatre company Eastern Angles and is taking place between April and September. It will feature a series of exciting creative workshops involving the Hampton community in puppetry,

monster-building, story creation, booklet illustration, storytelling, music and video. The workshops will explore the landscape of Hampton and create a colourful folklore for a place that was a series of brick pits until 1997. In a final weekend of presentations at Hampton’s own new performing arts venue, The Undercroft, the whole community will come together to celebrate its achievement.

Ivan Cutting, Director of Eastern Angles, says: ‘We’re interested in using traditional means of telling stories, through music, poetry and oral storytelling, but using them in modern ways. ‘This might include a rock song, puppetry, spoken word, theatre, video and digital technology, dance and interactive installations. ‘These will be spread across a wide age range so there is something for everyone from story circles for

infants, puppetry and storyboard making for primary pupils, theatre and writing for secondary students, walks and discussions for adults and reminiscence sessions for older residents.’ The project is being made possible by a grant from the Arts Council England’s ‘Creative People and Places fund’ and the programme is being run in partnership with vibrant Peterborough-based Lamphouse Theatre Company.

A full programme of activities will be announced soon, visit www.easternangles.co.uk for more information

Healthier school packed lunches

Change4Life tips lunchbox top

Less than two percent of primary school packed lunches in England meet nutritional standards, according to recent research.

A

team from the University of Leeds, commissioned by Flora, found lunchboxes full of high levels of sugars, salts, and saturated fats and not enough minerals or vitamins. Of the 300 lunchboxes examined over half contained too many snacks, nearly half included sugary drinks and just one in five boxes contained a vegetable or any salad. In fact, despite high-profile awareness campaigns on childhood obesity and guidance provided by consumer groups, the quality of children's lunchboxes has barely improved in the last decade. About half of all primary pupils take a packed lunch to school and

they should consume about a third of their daily nutrient requirements at lunchtime. This means they need food that will provide enough energy, protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals to see them through the rest of the school day. No single food contains all the essentials a child's body needs to be healthy and function efficiently, so it's important that the contents are varied. The truth is that it's actually hard to get the variety of foods required for a balanced diet into lunchboxes. But, it's important to try...and there is plenty of guidance available to help parents pack more healthy options.

If you make a packed lunch for your child, Change4Life has some great, and easy, ideas to help you make healthier choices including:

According to NHS Choices a healthier lunchbox should: • Be based on starchy carbohydrates such as bread, potatoes, rice or pasta • Include fresh fruit and vegetables or salad • Include a source of protein such as beans or pulses, eggs, fish, meat, cheese or a dairy alternative • Include a side dish such as a low-fat and lower-sugar yoghurt (or dairy alternative), tea cake, fruit bread, plain rice/corn cakes, homemade plain popcorn, sugar-free jelly • Include a drink such as water, skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, sugar-free or no-added-sugar drinks

REMEMBER

• If your child doesn't like wholegrain bread try making a sandwich from one slice of white and one slice of wholemeal/brown • Avoid using mayonnaise in sandwiches • Pick lower fat sandwich fillings such as lean meats like chicken or turkey, fish and reduced-fat cream cheese or hard cheese • Always add salad to sandwiches – it counts towards your child's 5-a-day • Reduce the number of times you include crisps and swap for homemade plain popcorn or plain rice cakes • Swap cakes, chocolate, cereal bars and biscuits for malt loaf, fruited teacakes, fruit breads or fruit

Lunchboxes must be kept cool. Ideally use an insulated lunchbox and include ice packs or a frozen carton of juice. If you prepare sandwiches the evening before, always store them in the fridge overnight.

Finding the best family legal adviser Top tips from Hegarty Solicitors We all experience life’s ups and downs and our family undergoes periods of change. During these times we may feel the need to seek expert legal advice to navigate the sometimes unexpected and complex situations that arise.

I

f you are thinking of changing your, or your child’s, name or are dealing with family issues such as a relationship breakdown, child contact arrangements, spousal maintenance or the division of matrimonial assets, you may be confused about choosing a family law specialist to provide guidance and advice. Experienced family solicitor Pavinder Khela, at Hegarty Solicitors, has five top tips to help steer you in the right direction. • Experience Look for a qualified solicitor who is experienced in the area of family law; the combination of acquired legal knowledge and skills developed over time working in this specialist field means such a solicitor will have the necessary know-how to resolve your family problems. • Approach Check whether your solicitor is a member of Resolution, a family law

organisation which promotes a non-confrontational, sensitive approach to resolving divorce, separation and other family problems. Members sign up to a code of practice which requires them to carry out matters in a constructive manner that consider the needs of the whole family, in particular the best interests of children, to reach a resolution. If a solicitor has acquired specialist accreditation with Resolution they will have proven they have experience, knowledge and demonstrative skills in family law. • Communication While every solicitor has their own style and approach, it is important that you feel you are given clear and unambiguous legal advice from the outset. A good family solicitor will always make sure they fully understand your situation and how you would like it to change. They will also ensure you fully

Pavinder Khela, Family Solicitor

understand the options open to you. You will get a general impression when you first meet with your solicitor...trust your instincts. • Support The breakdown of a marriage and ensuing family situation is never an easy time. Make sure you feel you are in safe hands with the solicitor you choose and receive a good level of consistency with the advice and support you are given throughout your case. • Cost Ensure you are given a clear cost estimate at the outset of your case. Look for a solicitor that offers a fixed fee appointment for initial advice about your options before taking any further action. Remember court action should always be a last resort as it can be costly; a good solicitor will work to resolve problems without your case having to go to court whenever possible.

For further help and advice about family legal matters contact Pavinder Khela at Hegarty Solicitors on 01780 752066 or email pavinder.khela@hegarty.co.uk

Celebrating Progress and Achievement

Raising children’s aspirations is key to the Children’s University’s objectives, alongside the understanding that learning can be ‘a satellite navigation to better places in life’.

“I enjoy having my own passport, going to lots of different clubs inside and outside of school and wearing the graduation gown.”

T

“Join it as it is fun and worthwhile to help you with skills for the future.”

“I have learnt that I am good at sports, I am getting better at things and I believe in myself more.” “It has given me more confidence to try new clubs, enabled me to be more sociable and made me more excited about clubs and school.”

What teachers say about the Children’s University...

hat’s why the charity gives seven to 14 year olds, and five to six year olds with their families, the opportunity to be involved in high quality learning experiences outside the school day and often in very different locations such as museums, country parks and leisure centres. The Children’s University’s ethos is one of cooperation, collaboration, learning from each other and making things better for children and young people through providing and facilitating aspirational learning experiences. As well as boosting achievement and fostering a love of learning, it believes in celebrating progress and success. And, in January, there was great cause for celebration with the first graduation ceremonies of the year. Bronze Award graduations were held at Thomas Deacon Academy, St Augustine’s CofE Junior School and Discovery Primary School, all in Peterborough, and St Norbert’s Catholic Primary School, in Spalding.

“Children have more confidence in themselves, they enjoy coming to school more and are excited about telling me how many hours they have.” Children’s University Coordinator at St Augustine’s CofE Junior School

If you are a school or parent who would like to be part of Peterborough Children’s University, or a venue interested in becoming a Learning Destination, contact Gill Hall, Peterborough Children’s University Manager, Gill.Hall@vivacity-peterborough.com or call 01733 864784/ 864729 28

More than 50 children who achieved a Silver Award, for completing more than 65 hours of out-of-school activities, or higher attended a ceremony at the University Centre Peterborough. Four pupils achieved the highest award, the Gold Fellowship, a tremendous achievement for completing 1,000 or more hours outside the classroom. Nikki Cherry, Learning and Interpretation Officer at Thornhaugh attraction Sacrewell, attended the ceremony as the special guest to present the awards and give a flavour of the sort of learning opportunities available at Learning Destinations, such as Sacrewell, in the Peterborough area. The Children’s University graduations were well-supported by proud parents, teachers and children, showing just how highly regarded the charity’s work is in developing independent and effective lifelong learners. Peterborough Children’s University is looking forward to further graduation ceremonies later in the year.

Education is key to achieving recycling goals Encouraging school children to recycle

Peterborough City Council, in partnership with Amey, provides free waste and recycling educational workshops for schools, resident groups and local businesses. By improving residents’ waste and recycling knowledge, the overarching aim is to promote the reduce, re-use, recycle model and lower contamination of bins. The Waste and Recycling education team, led by Waste and Policy Supervisor Glen Vincent, provides talks, interactive lessons and advice about all things waste and recycling within the city area. Last year the team provided educational talks and lessons to more than 20 schools and resident groups. Research suggests that children taught waste management messages apply what they learn at home and can be instrumental in encouraging their parents to increase the family’s recycling rates.

Therefore a key part of the team’s work takes place within schools. Glen Vincent, Education Lead, says: ‘Children take home our key messages and put what they learn into practice. ‘For example, they will ensure that waste materials are in the correct bins. ‘We encourage the children to be ambassadors at home and it leads to fundamental changes in recycling behaviours throughout the family.’ Last year a new learning environment, the Education Room, was launched at the city’s state-ofthe-art Energy Recovery Facility, run by Viridor. However, the education team also takes the learning experience into schools, and to resident groups and local businesses within Peterborough.

Amey is committed to supporting Peterborough communities and is keen to teach young people what happens to their waste and how they can recycle more. The company offers free, fun and engaging sessions for schools, managed by a trained and experienced waste education team. Understanding the wider issues surrounding the environment and sustainability is an important part of education and the team conveys these messages through various interactive sessions.

Topics covered include: What’s in the bins in Peterborough? What should we recycle? What happens to your waste and recycling? What can you do to recycle more? The future of waste The aim is to inspire children and young people to lead the way in future sustainable living. The waste education team has a number of resources which can be brought into schools and used during lunch time for educational play.
