FUNDRAISING SUCCESS In October, with my mum Liz and mother-in-law Hilary, we held a successful coffee morning in aid of Macmillan cancer support and Maggie’s Cancer Support at St B’s Hall.
Yaxley did us proud supporting this event and we really enjoyed welcoming everyone who came along. There was a lovely atmosphere as visitors enjoyed delicious cakes and refreshments, played games, had a go on the tombola, entered the raffle and bought gifts at the handmade gift, Bodyshop and Usborne stalls. We were extremely lucky with the weather and visitors were able to enjoy chatting and catching up both inside and outside. On Sunday, the remaining cakes were sold on a stall outside my house, this was very well supported too and we sold out. We have also been selling secondhand books and continue to sell the handmade gifts, all in aid of the charities. On Monday I delivered all the raffle and game prizes to all the lucky winners. Marlene was over the moon to win first prize of a beautiful
handmade quilt made by my very talented Susan Bartlett. Jessica was super excited to win the jar of sweets in the 'guess how many sweets are in the jar game' with an incredible guess only three sweets away from the correct quantity. We would like to say a massive 'thank you' to all those who came along to support the event. A special thanks goes to Emma, Jo, Abi and Michelle for helping to set up and run the stalls and our families and other friends who helped with everything from putting up posters to baking cakes. Big thanks to Vicky at St B’s who kindly allowed us to use the hall free of charge in support of Macmillan and Maggie’s and Justine at Yaxley Gazette for support us in promoting the event.
YAXLEY CHRISTMAS RIDE Santa will be joining the Yaxley Firefighters again this year to spread the festive spirit. As always, this is to help raise money for The Firefighters' Charity. COMMUNITY POLICE UPDATE
The clocks have changed which has, in past years, seen an increase in burglaries. Leaving a light or radio on, or timed lights, are all great ways to deter burglaries from occurring. Stay vigilant in your neighbourhood and report anything that is suspicious. This month, we have continued days of action with speed checks in Yaxley. Tickets have been issued and also education around parking offences.
There is a countywide series of catalytic converter thefts, and after reports from the villages we have been patrolling, looking for the perpetrators; this isn’t targeting Yaxley or neighbouring villages but across the county as a whole. The reduction of anti-social behaviour reported to us around The Broadway
Shopping Centre has been effective. Targeting the right people at the right time has had great results and we thank you all for reporting this to us. As the winter weather arrives, so does the ice. Take care when driving on untreated roads and ensure that your windscreen is fully cleared before attempting to drive. We will continue to listen to the councillors and residents and will attend to all criminality but if you notice something or have concerns please let us know.

HOLME WI
Alison McGuinness, President November was our AGM meeting, including the re-election of the President and the Committee. Once all the business matters were out of the way, we then settled down for an evening of fun. After a very last-minute cancellation in November, by our booked guest speaker, one of our member's daughter very kindly stepped in and organised a team building event. We were given three tasks to complete, all within a certain time, as a team. The first was one involved a team member drawing what was written on a card without the rest of the team seeing it, the second member then had to write down on the card what they saw, and the next team member had to draw what has been written down. Some of the answers were hilarious! We were then given a piece of A4 card cut into shapes, and we had to arrange the shapes back into the A4 size without touching every piece and talking. Very difficult, as one thing we are good at is talking! Our last challenge was to build the tallest tower made out of marshmallows and pasta sticks. When finished, it had to stand on its own without support for at least 30 seconds with one last marshmallow balanced on the top. A very sticky task and unfortunately some marshmallows didn’t make it on to the structure, they were consumed! A very fun evening and something very different too. An impressive selection of knitted woolly hats were on display, made by our ladies for the Sailors' Society. The ladies certainly have been very busy. We meet on the first Thursday of the month and would warmly welcome anyone wishing to come along. Contact WIholmevillage@gmail.com

Nothing in the world is quite as adorably lovely as a robin when he shows off and they are nearly always doing it. Frances Hodgson Burnett
THE ROBIN - THE LEGEND! If you have ever wondered why red robins are associated with Christmas, postmen in Victorian Britain were nicknamed 'Robins' because of their red-breasted coloured uniforms. So the robin on the Christmas card came to represent the postman who delivered the card, yet there are fables that pre-date this explanation.
The robin is a legend Some fables link the robin to Christianity. The story goes that the robin was once a plain, brown bird. The bird went to sing to Jesus who was dying on the cross. Blood from Jesus’ wounds then stained the breast of the bird and from that moment on, the robin passed its red breast down through the generations. Another legend places the robin at the birth of Jesus. On a chilly night in Bethlehem, a brown bird fanned the flames of a fire to keep the baby Jesus warm. Scorched by the fire, the breast of the bird turned red forever more. The bird was named before the English language had a word for the colour ‘orange’. Many things that were really orange were called red instead even though we did have the word for ‘orange’ as in the fruit. The colour orange was not named as a colour in English until the 16th century. The name for the colour comes from the fruit. Our affection for the robin was cemented in 1960 when it was voted our national bird. Christmas robins will forever be commemorated on Christmas cards so let's hope they remain a common sight in our gardens for future generations to appreciate.
Looking after robins in the winter These stunning little birds are all over the place come the colder months and they can withstand very cold temperatures. Even in
freezing temperatures, robins can stay warm enough to make staying through the winter worthwhile. Those who remain near their mating grounds will get first dibs on the best nesting territories when spring arrives.
LOVELY LICHENS BRING A COLOURFUL BURST TO WINTER DAYS From strong ochres to sage greens in clusters of patterns from swirls and circles to cup formations and fronds, beautifully coloured lichens abound on tree trunks, gateposts, benches, fences, stone walls and on the ground. Look closely and they are there to be found - on most walks there will undoubtedly be a lichen lurking somewhere along the way. Often more noticeable in late autumn/winter, when leaves have fallen these cheery, steadfast natural patterns can appear in blazes of colour. Lichen is not a plant, nor is it a single organism, but a blend of fungi and algae – and worldwide there are thought to be upward of 17,000 different types and formations, with more than a thousand in the UK.
If you want to observe robins in winter, try putting out water for them. They can survive on their own by eating snow, but birds always welcome a source of unfrozen water for drinking and bathing.
Three of the most common types are:
Robins will use a platform to build their nests. You can find many simple plans for a bird platform online or develop your own. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just an elevated space with a bit of board will do.
Cup lichen has irregular, overlapping, pale-green leaf-like dense mats from which trumpet-shaped fruiting bodies (30–40mm high) grow vertically. It is found growing on the ground, on tree roots and logs throughout the country. Look for it around the roots of trees in places like Lattersey nature reserve, Lady's Wood and Thorpe Wood.
The birds will be attracted to a roost where they can situate their nest for the spring breeding season. Outside of providing fruit and nesting space, they like to bathe frequently. In extreme cold, there are heated units to put in the birdbath. The water will remain liquid and at a temperature that delights the birds. Helping robins overwinter gives us a unique opportunity to take photos and observe these animals in action. To keep them safe, do not use pesticides in the lawn. This can contaminate their natural food source and harm the birds. If you have a cat, create a high birdhouse out of reach. Around April, mating pairs will begin making a nest and laying eggs. This is a time to be especially vigilant, so the babies can grow up safely.
Golden lichen has a strong, deep orange colour fading to yellow with elongated radiating lobes. It tends to grow in rounded circles with a central area resembling crazy paving; these are found everywhere on walls, exposed limestone, gravestones and gateposts. When visiting nature reserves it's worth looking all the wat round any old gate and fence posts to find these beauties lurking.
Map lichen has strong yellow-to-pale-green rosettes, up to 15cm in diameter, with a distinctive crackled appearance with small black spots scattered all over – this species is usually found on exposed hard granite Check churchyards for this one. www.wildlifebcn.org/blog/ryan-clark/charismatic-churchyard-lichens www.wildlifebcn.org/nature-reserves/cambridgeshire-nature-reserves www.britishlichensociety.org.uk

WHAT CHRISTMAS MEANS TO US ... WILLIAM DE YAXLEY Here at William de Yaxley, we look forward to this time of the year where we get to spend quality time with our family and friends celebrating Christmas. The children in Year 5 have been thinking about Christmas and have some great memories to share. They understand that the meaning of Christmas is different for everyone. Alfie, aged 9 enjoys spending quality time with his mum every Christmas baking delicious cookies ready for Santa when he delivers his presents. Other children were excited at the idea of all their family being together and off work so that they can relax and have a big Christmas dinner.
Another student Amelie, aged 9 looks forward to going to church with her family on Christmas Eve to celebrate the meaning behind Christmas. For all, Christmas is a joyful time where love and happiness is spread and we do our best to support those who need it through donating to the foodbank and wearing our Christmas jumpers. We also love to get involved in the Christmas spirit through our Christmas card designing, carol service and Nativity. And of course, the first thing that all the children were ecstatic about is all the presents and laughs we have on Christmas day! re ca rs ild che ed Ch ou ept v cc a

FOURFIELDS “Christmas means celebrating the birth of Jesus and the hope that gives us all.” Mrs Jones – HLTA “Christmas is a special time of year, where I enjoy spending time with my family”. Tori - Year 5 Pupil “Having the pleasure of making other people joyful”. Alex - Year 5 Pupil “Christmas means the sharing of delicious food with the people you love”. Chloe - Year 5 Pupil “Christmas is sitting around the tree with my family and opening presents!” Isla - Year 5 Pupil “Christmas is a time for snuggling with my family and reading Christmas stories” Noah - Year 2 Pupil
With thanks to William de Yaxley pupils for their beautiful Christmas cards “Christmas is a time to take part in family traditions like Christmas Eve carol singing, waking up early for Father Christmas, sharing a meal with loved ones and eating far too much. These family traditions help us to remember the family who are no longer able to be with us, but also make new memories to share with our family in the future.” Mrs Avory - Teacher Christmas can be crazy and chaotic, but it is also a beautiful and meaningful time of year. I like listening to the classic carols, looking at lights and elaborate decorations, and I also love time together with family and friends. But as a Christian I am reminded that Christmas ‘Is simply about Jesus’ and the lights I love so much remind me of the light that came into the world that first Christmas Day! Sue Blyth
THE WILDLIFE TRUST Christmas is the perfect time of year to bring family members to our nature reserves, to enjoy the peace and natural beauty together, to rest our minds and connect with nature as we break from work and school. We love to look for the bright colours of evergreens and winter berries and listen for the sounds of birds overwintering in the Fens. We hope everyone will find some time for nature this Christmas and share that with those most important to you. Danielle Page

yaxleyyuletide FESTIVE FOOD
THE PERFECT CHEESEBOARD By Tom Hancock
How much cheese? Allow about 100g-125g (3½-4oz) cheese per person if your cheeseboard is being served after a meal, or slightly more - 150g (5oz) per person if you’re serving it as a snack/light meal.
Which cheese? Three or four cheeses is enough – more than that and there’s too much for the palate to enjoy. The cheeses should be different styles, textures and flavours. Cheddar, Stilton and Brie is a classic combination, as it mixes a hard, soft and a blue. Why not go totally British with a traditional West Country Farmhouse Cheddar matched with Cropwell Bishop, a wonderful robust blue, and maybe Bath Soft Cheese, which is gorgeously gooey and mushroomy in flavour. It’s nice to put one wild-card cheese on the board like a citrussy goat’s cheese or meaty smoked cheese like St James.
FRUIT & NUT BAKE A great gift to make for Christmas Ingredients
again. Continue to heat and stir in 30-second intervals until the chocolate is just melted.
75g cup walnuts 450g good white chocolate, finely chopped
5. Immediately stir in the remaining chocolate and allow it to sit at room temperature, stirring often, until it’s completely smooth. (If you need to heat it a little more, place it in the microwave for another 15 seconds.)
75g dried cranberries 75g medium-diced dried apricot
Directions Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C. 1. Using a pencil, draw an 8-by10-inch rectangle on a piece of parchment paper. Turn the parchment paper over so the pencil mark doesn’t get onto the chocolate and place it on a sheet pan. 2. Place the walnuts in one layer on another sheet pan and bake for 8 minutes. Set aside to cool. 3. Place three quarters of the white chocolate in a heat-proof glass bowl and put it in the microwave on high for 30 seconds.
6. Pour the melted chocolate onto the parchment paper and spread it lightly to fill the drawn rectangle. 7. Sprinkle the top evenly with the cooled walnuts, the cranberries, and apricots. Press the nuts and fruit lightly so they will set in the chocolate. 8. Set aside for at least 2 hours until firm or refrigerate for 20 minutes. 9. Cut or break the bark in 16 pieces and serve at room temperature.
4. Stir the chocolate with a rubber spatula, return it to the microwave for
Great as Christmas presents – in a small box or cellophane bag tied with a pretty ribbon.
another 30 seconds, then stir
Enjoy.
PS If you need me to clean your cooker before Christmas, please call me Eldon Loades-Vincent, OvenGleamers, on 01733 530330
Crackers A good oat biscuit, cracker or artisan bread will complement the cheese. Add a chutney - look for unusual brands at farmers’ markets, and some apples or grapes.
Drinks After a meal a sweet fortified white wine is always good. You could even try a whiskey, or a gin and tonic. If the board is going to serve as a light meal, then beer or cider is a good choice.
A note on storage
TAR
Store in a cold room or the bottom of the fridge, wrapped in waxed paper if possible This allows the cheese to breathe. Let the cheese to come up to room temperature for about 20 minutes before serving for maximum flavour.

FESTIVE FOOD
yaxleyyuletide
FEEDING A CROWD AT CHRISTMAS By Tracey Anderson
Whether it’s the gradual increase in food prices over the past year, or your desire to cut back on food waste, there has never been more incentive not to over cater at Christmas. But just how do you work out how much food and drink you need when you’re feeding far more people than usual? We’ve come to the rescue.
Turkey Allow approximately 500g per person. This doesn’t mean that you’ll get 500g of meat each, simply that to get a good portion size you need to allow this much turkey-weight per person. So, if you want to feed 8 adults your turkey should be at least 4Kg, more if you want leftovers.
Roast beef or pork If the joint is off the bone, allow 250g per serving – so 2kg for eight people. Allow 350g per serving for roasts on the bone – so around 3kg for eight.
so that’s at least 800g for eight people! With stuffing it’s better to have more than run-out, and it’s great on turkey sandwiches later!
Sprouts Unless you are a sprout-lover allow 80g per person – or 650g for eight people. If you do have any leftover they go great in bubble and squeak for boxing day brunch.
Carrots and other roast or steamed veg
You can always freeze leftovers for an easy addition to midweek suppers.
Cranberry sauce At least 50g per person. I’m sure I eat more than that though!
Bread sauce 75ml seems to suffice because not everyone likes it, but those that do LOVE it. Around 600700ml is usually enough.
Christmas pudding
Roasties
80g-100g is about right for any serving of vegetables, so you need 800g combined for eight people. I allow more because lots my family are vegetarian.
Everyone loves roasties! Allow 250g of potatoes per person, so 2kg for eight people.
Gravy
Treat it like gravy. 125ml per person unless your family are the type that can’t stop pouring!
125ml per person is enough for a normal family, but if your relatives are like mine and treat gravy as a food group then allow double.
Unfortunately, there isn’t one shopping list to suit all families, but this is a good basic guide; adapt it to suit your own catering preferences.
Stuffing You need to allow 100g of stuffing per person,
A 900g pudding will be plenty to feed eight.

YOUR PERFECT CHRISTMAS TREE yaxleyyuletide
PINE FOR PERFECTION Being part of 'team real' in the real versus artificial Christmas tree debate is something people feel great pride in. There's nothing quite like a real Christmas fir baby. Choosing it with your family, standing in the chilly air debating the benefits of various heights and shapes signals that Christmas has well and truly arrived. They look stunning, their fresh pine smell is incredible and they’re not as difficult to care for as you might have feared. Let Yaxley Gazette take the guess work out of this most important festive ritual, and help you pick the perfect Christmas tree.
CHOOSING THE BEST TREE The Norway spruce (Piceaabies) is the traditional tree. It has sharp, short needles and sadly it is the most likely to drop. It’s best to buy nearer Christmas. Having said that, if you treat it well, it won’t perform that badly and you can enjoy the lowest cost of the real trees. The Nordmann Fir (Abies Nordmanniana) is the popular choice nowadays due to it retaining its needles or ‘non-drop’ to which it's often referred. The needles are soft and broad and when looked after a fresh Nordmann can easily last the season. A good choice if you have children or pets.
KEEPING IT REAL Real trees are much better for the environment. They are essential to complex ecosystems that provide refuge for wildlife, protect water supplies and stabilise the soil. ... A single Christmas tree can absorb up to one ton of carbon dioxide over its life time, with one acre providing enough oxygen for 18 people every day. They’re a crop plant rather like a field of wheat and they begin their life in a nursery before being transplanted into a field. When it comes to harvest at Christmas time, they are thinned out to avoid any large clearing. This preserves habitat for any local wildlife. The carbon footprint is important too – a real tree which is chipped has a footprint of about 3.5kg CO2, compared to a whopping 40kg for a plastic tree. Real trees are increasingly easy to dispose of responsibly after the holidays and are fully biodegradable.

If you do buy one quite early then the most important thing is to keep it watered – Peterborough Christmas Trees cut the end of the trunk so be sure to put it straight in water, a bucket or a stand will be fine until you are ready to decorate, you can leave in outside in water until you are ready to bring it in. If it was in a net when you bought it, remove this as it’s important to have air circulating around the needles.
A real tree is unique and individual

It’s important to buy as fresh a tree as possible as the longer they hang around after they’ve been cut, the more likely they are to go downhill. Local Christmas tree specialists are a good option as they don’t have trees lying around on pallets. Premium trees will cost a little more but will be pretty much the perfect shape. Value trees will cost less and have one or two imperfections, like a wonky leader at the top but at a good price. The needles should be glossy and full of colour.
G IT R
KEEPING IT FRESH
When you bring the tree inside, try to avoid putting it anywhere too warm or close to a heat source and make sure that you use a stand with a water reservoir with water levels really well topped up. If kept well supplied with water, it should hold its needles well.

villagefarm December, the month when autumn fades into winter, when the cold begins to bite, and when the sun signifies day’s end in the midafternoon, encouraging us back inside to hibernate, at least for 16 hours until dawn greets us the next day. by Lisa Martin
EWE CAN HAVE TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING ... On 21 December at the farm we shall have 7 hours, 38 minutes, and 30 seconds of daylight. And those seconds count! The following day, the 22 December, gifts us an extra two seconds of daylight. The last few years have averaged just 39 hours of sunshine in the month of December; little more than one hour per day. With studies showing that gratitude is key in our emotional wellbeing, far from feeling sad about the lack of light, we try to celebrate what we do have. We can all agree with Nathaniel Hawthorne who described autumn sunshine as precious, and it’s all the more important that we cherish those golden moments.
work is hard, they eat very little during ‘tupping’ (like the ‘rutting’ season of deer), and they change from healthy, weighty, prime animals to thin, drawn, haggard specimens during those short weeks, with each tup able to mate with up to 150 ewes. I walked across the field last December and met the small group of tups looking exhausted, eyes sunken, and fleeces looking far from their best. Now to say they were hiding from the ewes may be doing them a disservice, but let me just say that they were laying out on the grass around the corner, well away from the ewes who were grazing out in the field! You can have too much of a good thing…
December marks the end of the calendar year, and with much of our harvested grain being shipped out from the barns in this month, there is a sense of completeness - of closure – but farming never stops, and in the same month the tups (male sheep) will be moved out of the fields where the ewes (female sheep) are, having (we hope) impregnated them. For the tups, their job is done, and they earn another 10 months rest; for the ewes, this marks the beginning of the new year bringing new life, lambs, and everything that goes along with that. Spring literally starts here.
Our system of regenerative farming has many benefits to our soils, our wildlife, and to the planet in helping the soil to store carbon, but there are other advantages as well. We use ‘cover crops’ to help improve our soil health. We’ll plant a diverse mixture of plants immediately after harvest and they then grow and cover the ground (hence the name) protecting the soil, locking in nutrients, and improving soil health. We then spray them off with a herbicide before planting the next crop, and prior to that we often graze those cover crops with sheep, which turns the greenery into a useable fertiliser (poo!).
Please don’t feel that the tups have an easy life, however, working two months on and 10 off. Their
Last year, we had some ewes grazing the cover crops, and some grazing grass alone. We calculate

the number of lambs likely to be born by using an ultrasound scanner (like in human pregnancies) and then express the results as a percentage. A ewe with twins would be 200% for example, and typical scanning results for flocks are around that 200% mark; an average of two lambs for each ewe. Last year, the ewes grazing on our grass scanned at just over 200%, but the ewes grazing on the cover crops scanned at a staggering 254%. The diverse cover crop made up of lots of different grasses and legumes helped the sheep stay healthier, and have more lambs! Wherever you are this month, and however you’re spending Christmas, we hope you are staying fit and well – perhaps, like our ewes, by eating a diverse, healthy diet! In season this month are lovely root vegetables parsnips, swede, potatoes, as well as brussels sprouts (hooray for brussels!), kale, wild mushrooms, and much more. The game larder provides duck, goose, pheasant, partridge, and venison, and you’ll find British apples tasting delicious in the shops as well as nuts such as walnut and hazelnut.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas in every sense! Hark the Herald angels sing… •

inspire Dear Friends, I have been thinking about language and the way that language changes. Over the last couple of years we have had to learn a completely new language. Do you remember the time when you thought a bubble was something that children blew from washing up liquid or bubble gum rather than something that we used to protect ourselves from others. When I was nursing, LFTs were something related to a liver function test blood test, now it is the test that I take at least twice weekly to try and ensure I don’t infect someone with Covid 19. The language of Christianity has changed over the years. One of the oldest translations of the Bible that we use today is the King James Bible which was first used in 1611. The language may seem old to us today and difficult to read, but this has been the translation of the Bible that many people have used for many years. The language of the Bible and the language of Christianity may have changed over the years, but the message has never changed. That message is one that has been passed down through the ages, it was told from person to person, it was written down and shared and still the message of the Bible is current to us at the end of 2021.
24 24
Angels are messengers in the Bible, taking a message to Mary that she was to be the mother of Jesus. Joseph was also visited by an angel when he had doubts as to what he should do. It was angels that appeared to the shepherds telling them the news that changed history: I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”Luke Chapter 2 This Christmas we will be looking at the amazing Christmas story that has been passed down through the ages in a variety of ways, starting with theangels. There will be an angel trail around Yaxley, Advent windows, a blue Christmas service, Christingle, Carol Service, Crib service, Midnight service welcoming Christmas and a service on Christmas Day itself. We will be remembering that Jesus came to be Emmanuel – God with us because of the love of God for us. You are welcome to join us for any of these services and events. We have had to limit numbers and implement a booking system and we will of course be following any Government and Church of England guidance, so please keep an eye on social media.

inspire Yaxley Methodist Chapel
PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS The first Sunday in Advent is the 28th November this Year. Advent means arrival or coming. It is the four week period of waiting and preparing for the celebration of Christ's Birth. In many homes and Churches and in our Chapel we have an Advent wreath with evergreen plants, four red candles and a white candle in the centre. One red candle is lit each Sunday and on Christmas Day the white one is lit representing the birth ofJesus, the Light of the World ! Our Minister, Rev'd Vivienne, mentioned recently that the Latin Hospitium meant Hospitality. It can also translate as Shelter or Inn apparently. The owner of an Inn in Bethlehem offered his stable to two weary travellers searching for a roof over their heads. The heavily pregnant Lady was Mary and she was able to give birth to her baby safely thanks to the Hospitality of that Innkeeper. Without his help Jesus may have been born in the streets. With many people living on the streets searching for a roof over their heads this Winter we are thankful for the organisations helping them. One of these is the Garden House and, at the time of writing this, we are planning to reach out in our community by donating warm hats, scarves, gloves and socks to them to distribute to the homeless people during Advent. Our Sunday Services start at 10.30. On Sunday 19 December we will be having our Family Christmas Celebration at 10.30 a.m. We will be welcoming everyone aged from one to 100 to come and join us in celebrating the birth of Jesus.
We wish you all Peace and Love and Hope this Christmas. Stay safe and God Bless You.
The Silent Night Chapel in Oberndorf, Credit Gakuro, CC BY-SA 3.0
FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS CAROLS SILENT NIGHT Silent Night originated in the village of Oberndorf in the Austrian mountains. The story goes that the day before Christmas Eve in 1818, Father Joseph Mohr, pastor of Saint Nicholas church, discovered that the church organ was broken. Taking a verse he had written two years previously he travelled through the snow to his friend Franz Gruber, a school teacher and musician, and Gruber set it to music. At midnight mass, Father Mohr and Gruber, accompanied only by Gruber’s guitar, sang “Silent Night, Holy Night” for the first time. The song was sung simultaneously in English and German by troops during the WW1 Christmas truce of 1914. O HOLY NIGHT Listeners to Classic FM have consistently voted O Holy Night to be their favourite Christmas carol. Originally based on a French-language poem written in 1843, with the first line "Minuit, chrétiens! c'est l'heure solennelle" (Midnight, Christians, is the solemn hour), was set to music by composer Adolphe Adam in 1847. The carol reflects on the birth of Jesus as humanity's redemption. IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER

Based on a poem by the English poet Christina Rossetti, this carol was written sometime before 1872 in response to a magazine request for a Christmas poem. The poem became recognised as a carol after it appeared in The English Hymnal in 1906, with music by Gustav Holst.

Technically, yes - children are liable to pay tax on savings, asT:they have as adults. 01733 248 the 180 same income tax allowance Text: 07305It's 355595 uncommon, though, asor children generally don't earn money, E: pnbird@birdandco.ltd info@birdandco.ltd www.birdandco.ltd and their savings don't tend to earn enough interest to exceed 183 Main Street, Yaxley, Peterborough PE7 3LD any tax thresholds. Like adults, children get a personal tax-free allowance, which is how much income they can earn before paying any tax. This is £12,570 in the 2021/2022 tax year. If a child's income does exceed the personal allowance - which could be the case if they receive money from a trust, for example - you must inform HMRC, and, depending on how much money they receive, tax may be owed. If you're a parent and want to put some money into your child's savings account, there are some strict rules in place to stop you using their tax-free allowances as a way of cutting down your own tax bill. If the interest on the savings you put into your child's savings account exceeds £100 a year before tax (or £200 if both parents give money), all of this interest (not just the amount over £100) will be added to your savings income, and taxed as if it were your own. This could mean you're unexpectedly pushed over your personal savings allowance and will have to pay tax on the savings interest. Once children turn 16, a loophole in ISA law means that they are eligible for two ISA allowances - both the Junior ISA allowance and the adult ISA allowance. So, in the 2021/202 tax year, they could potentially deposit a combined total of £29,000 into their respective ISA’s. They'll be able to do this until the age of 18, when any Junior ISA’s will be switched to adult ISA’s, and therefore only the adult ISA rules will apply.
FUEL POVERTY? With the recent reduction in Universal Credit and the energy crisis in the news, fuel poverty affects more people that you would think. Even though we have all been advised not to look at switching energy suppliers there are still things that can be done to save money and energy. It’s about changing behaviours and installing easy measures that could really help a person or home that is struggling. There are loads of freebies and advice as part of our friendly calls and home visits to help residents cut down on energy costs: FREE: LED bulbs, draught-proofing, radiator reflector panels, TV standby extension leads. Help with your energy bills and finding the cheapest tariff for you. Referrals for funding insulation and boiler replacement/re pair through ECHO Replacement of broken white goods via HEART Last year on this scheme there were 260 LED light bulbs installed and 145 radiators fitted with reflector panels, with all measures in the campaign
saving massive £36,826.80 off energy bills and 173 tonnes of carbon. Green Energy Switch delivers the LEAP scheme in partnership South Cambridgeshire District Council, Peterborough City Council and Rutland County Council to bring free energy support to residents in the region struggling with fuel poverty. The funding to help make this possible is from the LEAP scheme, which is a free service that is helping people keep warm and reduce their energy bills without costing them any money. If you know someone that would benefit from a LEAP visit you can easily refer them via the contact details below.

Income Tax on student earnings? Many believe that students are exempt from paying tax; this is not the case. However, every individual can earn up to the personal allowance, currently £12,570, per year, before tax needs to be deducted. If a student works only during the holidays, an incorrect tax code may result in Income Tax being deducted from their earnings. In this case, a tax repayment claim, form R40, can be submitted after the year end in order to reclaim any overpaid tax.
If your children are under 18, will they be taxed on any dividends they receive? If your children are younger than 18, you as the parents will be taxed on any dividend’s they receive which eliminates this tax advantage, so yes, they will. Also beware, if you are considering giving shares to your children and then paying them dividends, these come under the above rules, so you must be careful and seek professional advice before doing so.

Stay Merry, not miserable in the run up to Christmas ‘TIS the season to be jolly – but as we prepare for the season of goodwill and the long-awaited chance to spend it with family and friends, not everyone shares the Christmas spirit. The past 21 or so months have not only changed our shopping habits, as many of us now favour buying our goods online, but it has also seen the scammers becoming more sophisticated. In the year to April 2021, £2.3bn was lost after a “devastating surge” in scams as fraudsters exploited the pandemic. The consumer body Which? found that in the year to April 2021, 413,553 instances of fraud were reported in England, Wales and Northern Ireland – an increase of 33% on the previous 12 months. Online shopping scams topped the table as criminals took advantage of the fact that locked-down consumers were buying more items via the internet.

If you’re making a purchase from a website or person you don’t know and trust, carry out some research first. Read reviews or check the seller’s feedback before going ahead. Use a payment method that offers buyer protection, such as a credit card if you have one, as most major credit card providers will help you get your money back if the item is faulty or damaged, or if it never arrives. Make sure you have a strong password for your email. Criminals can use your email to access other online accounts, such as those you use for online shopping. You should also enable two-factor authentication (2FA), where possible, which gives your online account additional protection by double checking that you really are the person you claim to be, when logging in.
Be extra vigilant using Marketplace, eBay and Gumtree as these are also on the hit list for criminals. At home, seasonal security is essential, even if you are continuing to work from home. For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree, open car boots full of shopping while loads are being taken into the house and even the possibility of an unlocked garage or parcels left behind bins are rich pickings which can turn your Christmas from being Merry into Miserable! Equally, flaws in home security while out and about visiting friends and family are a beacon to thieves – so always remember to check your alarm and never leave doors, windows or garages unlocked. Don’t leave presents in full view – either in the home or in the back seat of the car. Shorter days mean longer time for thieves to be in operation – always lock your car and front door when entering your home. Keep a light on indoors and outdoors if you are out visiting friends or family. It may be an idea to fit some motion detector security lighting – it won’t just be carol singers who come calling. If you are expecting parcels or deliveries whilst you are away from home, try and arrange for them to be delivered to an alternative address instead of them being hidden by the bins! If buying bikes and / or electronic equipment for Christmas – mark them with your postcode. If using outdoor festive lighting, ensure cables aren’t passed through windows, leaving enough gap for burglars to make use of. For any home security improvements, we have locksmiths, alarm and CCTV installers, electricians and many other traders who can help. Visit www.safelocaltrades.com
