In just a short time it will be Christmas. I hope everyone is beginning to feel in the festive spirit and is in full swing with your shopping and celebrations. If you're looking for a real Christmas Tree, see page 18. We have some great ideas for the festive season for you from restaurants, theatres, and, of course, not forgetting the Fire Station's Santa Ride, in this issue. Ensuring your Christmas is merry is the subject of our articles from Safe Local Trades and the Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service. Stay safe! And don't forget the pets! There are many common foods in our households that are actually toxic to our pets. Some just cause small stomach upsets but in some cases it can be far more serious. There is information about all the foods and products to be aware of at this time of year to keep your pet safe too. Spare a thought for over Christmas for those who might be alone of feeling anxious or depressed. Maybe drop in on your elderly neighbours and anyone who lives alone, you never know how much it might mean to them. As the countdown to Christmas commences, please keep up the community spirit and support all the local businesses over the coming festive season. Don't forget to keep up to date with local news and events on the Yaxley Gazette Facebook group, it is a great way to discuss topics which may be relevant to you and your family. As always, thank you for your support over the year. Wishing all of our readers a fantastic Christmas. See you in the New Year!

We didn't have a speake r at our September meeting, bu t instead held an auction, at which our auctioneer Phyllis Black as usual pro vided many laughs, as well as raising money for funds. Afterwards we pla yed a few games of bingo for small prizes.
Our October meeting wa s completely different, with our speake r Stuart Orme telling us about the real Oliv er Cromwell who had many links with villages in this area, including Yaxley. Stuart is a very knowledge able and interesting speaker on ma ny subjects and currently works at the Cro mwell Museum in Huntingdon. The museu m is closed at the moment undergoing work but should reopen in March 2020, how ever, there is a temporary display at Hu ntingdon Town Hall, which is definitely wo rth a visit. At our meeting on 12 Dec ember we will have nibbles and drin ks and will be entertained by local singer Tammy.
We would like to wish all me mbers, past and present, as well as all residents of Yaxley, a Happy Christma s and a Peaceful New Year.

Short mat bowls is based on the outdoor sport of lawn bowls; many of the rules are adaptations of the outdoor game, with the basic aim being to deliver as many bowls as possible nearer to the smaller target bowl (the jack) than the opposition. A portable mat, between 40 to 45 feet long and 6 foot wide, allows up to 8 players per mat. Played in village halls, sports halls or schools ensures that the sport takes place regularly throughout the winter months.

cookwise The Chalkboard (at The Key Theatre) is independently owned and run by Hannah and Andy, who are fulfilling their dream of opening their own Tea Room and Bistro. At The Chalkboard we serve delicious breakfasts until 12pm in the week and until 5pm at the weekends. From 5pm we serve our pre-theatre menu. The restaurant closes at 8pm in the week and 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. After these hours we can cater for private events, so please get in touch. We serve our Chalkboards, which range from the Vegan Chalkboard and British Chalkboard to our wellloved Cheese Chalkboard served from 12pm daily which are proving popular with a glass of wine by the river. We are the home of ‘pick your own' afternoon tea which gives our customers a wide range of choice
from type of bread and sandwich filling to type of scone, and a large section of cake and savoury options. We have a wide range of choice for vegans or people following a gluten free diet. We also have a lighter bites menu if you wanted just a slice of cake and a coffee, or our mini afternoon tea with a sandwich, crisps, cake and a hot drink. The children’s afternoon tea is popular with its choice of sandwich shape, served with a cookie, rainbow cake, marshmallows and candy floss! Our Baby Showers are a lovely way to celebrate the upcoming arrival with friends over afternoon tea. The views from the restaurant are stunning!
We we want The Chalkboard to be a place where people can come and relax with friends and family, whether they are visiting the theatre or not. All the tables in the restaurant have a river view and it is even pretty when raining.

William de Yaxley Year 6 Evacuee Day at Stibbington Year 6 had a wonderful day at Stibbington. Each pupil had the role of a child who was really evacuated from a school in London to the villages of Stibbington or Wansford. During the day they found out where they lived, who they were looked after by and what it was like to be at school in 1940, including taking part in an air raid. By the end of the day many of them genuinely believed that they were about to be collected and taken home by their new guardians! It was wonderful that they got so involved in the role play and believed (even if it was only for a few seconds) that they weren't going home! Thank you mums and dads for providing such great costumes which helped to add to the overall experience. Year 6 Harvest Tea A huge 'thank you' to all of the friends and family members of year 6 children who came to the Harvest Tea. Year 6 children had fun baking scones in

preparation. We would like to say a massive thank you to Mrs Howe and Mrs Cheshire for helping us to ensure that all of the children had a chance to bake. We hope you enjoyed your soup, scones and tea? The money you kindly donated is being split between the local food bank and purchasing more seeds for Mr Graham Ingham's gardening club projects. Year 6 Wartime Cooking Year 6 children have also been busy peeling, chopping and grating vegetables for our Dig for Victory soup. Mr Graham Ingham and groups of children have been in the school grounds planting, watering and weeding potato plants over the last few months and we were recently able to harvest a crop of potatoes which Year 6 have used in our leek and potato soup. We hope that those of you who sampled some at our Harvest Tea enjoyed it! Our classrooms have smelled amazing over the last few days!

worn, from when the building first opened. In our dedicated assembly we looked at photos and plans of when the school was being built, and tried to recognise people from the first school photos. Over lunch we played music from the 1980s and watched TV programmes which would have been shown at the time. It was a very nostalgic day for everyone associated with our school, and it made us think about where we might be, and what life might be like, in another 30 years...
Girlguiding Janice Osborn, Commissioner, Girlguiding Yaxley District
Thanks to everyone who supported the Scouts and Guides Firework display, despite the damp weather. I am sure you will agree that the display was awesome. The bonfire was huge thanks to the Scouts and my Guiding (and quite a few non-Guiding!) friends and I spent the evening volunteering in the food/sweets tent which was busy as usual. We rely on the income from the events put on to continue work on the HQ building – the next project is adding a fire escape for the upstairs so that it complies with regulations for sleepovers. Everything costs money and whilst we make the most of all our volunteers, we can do with more, particularly from parents! The Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and many of the leaders took part in the Remembrance Sunday parades at Yaxley and Holme. They were all smartly turned out and a credit to Girlguiding. Thank you, girls and ladies.
Due to a resignation, I now need one (or two or more) regular volunteers at Tuesday Guides.Ideally, this would be someone who is willing to return to or step into leadership to strengthen the team to anticipate some more potential future changes. Get in touch if this could be you, or your friend, relative or workmate you could come along together! If you could spare just an hour-and-ahalf a week – do please think about it! We need help now to continue giving the girls the Guiding experience. Guides are aged 10 to 14. Currently this is a small unit but once I have a full team in place it will be allowed to grow. Training is provided. Don’t worry if you don’t have any Guiding background. You simply have to be over 18, enthusiastic and happy to be DBS checked.
You can email me on janiceo.girlguiding@gmail.com or ring me on 01487 831451 if you would like to chat, or simply register as a volunteer on the website and I will contact you. Find out more on our website www.girlguiding.org.

Folksworth PreSchool It’s hard to believe we are at the end of the year already. It’s gone so quickly, the long walks in the wheat fields are now a distant memory. The children are busy learning all about Christmas here and the festivals celebrated all around the world. Our senior practitioner Sarah has now completed her Yoga
and mindfulness training and the children are having yoga sessions twice a week. Encouraging activity in our young children helps set them up for a lifetime of being active and they are certainly loving being active indoors whilst the weather has been so dreadful!
We have a few sessions available in January, and are taking bookings for the Easter term so please do pop by for a visit!
Yaxley Infants School Keeping safe with Buddy from the NSPCC Last month, we had a visit from two representatives from the NSPCC. They delivered an assembly to the children and spoke about the importance of keeping safe and telling somebody if they felt worried or scared. As part of the assembly they spoke to the children about their mascot, Buddy. He helps children to remember the motto, 'Speak Out, Stay Safe'. Children were invited to take part in Buddy’s circuits in school and were encouraged to get sponsored for their hard work. Over the following weeks Aysa, our school sports coach, took the children during PE lessons to complete Buddy’s circuits. When Maggie from the NSPCC came back do the final assembly to see how we
had got on, we were able to say that we had raised over £320! With all the other school fundraising, this was another fantastic effort! Children were also reminded of the Childline number, 0800 1111, if they had nobody they could speak to. Safeguarding children is of the highest priorities at YIS and we were pleased to be able to teach this to our children in an exciting and positive way. This month, we had an excellent turnout for our school tours with each session full of interested parents. We were also delighted to see some children who we hope to see again in September.
Next month, we will be able to tell readers about how our phonics sessions for parents went. From all the Staff and Governors at Yaxley Infant School we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
If you have not been able to come to a school tour and you would like to visit us then please call the school on 01733 240918 or Email: office@yaxley.cambs.sch.uk We look forward to meeting you.
Farcet C. of E. Primary School We have started the second half of the Autumn term with more fantastic learning experiences here at Farcet. Our Year 5 and 6 Class have been very busy with their ‘Off with her Head!’ topic all about the Tudors. They visited Peterborough Museum and had a great day learning many interesting facts. We were very proud of the children's behaviour throughout the day which was exemplary. Years 3 and 4 are enjoying their music lessons, particularly singing together in unison. They performed a song they had rehearsed to the rest of the school and were able to maintain the correct pitch and use expression. Year 1 and 2 have been enjoying their ‘Muck, Mess and Mixtures’ topic. As part of this, they have been
exploring different materials and their absorbency. They are trying to find a suitable material to solve Super Ted's problem with his cape. Our Year 1 and Reception children have been very excited by their new topic – 'Do cows drink milk? ' Mrs Stanley visited the class to tell them all about her local farm. She showed them the produce they grow and the food it can be turned into. The children then used their senses to explore the different vegetables and crops. We are looking forward to the Christmas celebrations in school and lots more learning together.
Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School The children have been celebrating Diwali, they have made lanterns, t light holders and the babies have enjoyed exploring a Diwali themed sensory activity. The preschool have also been to visit St Peters Church, Thank you for showing the children around. We would like to wish all of our families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for all of your support over the past year and we look forward to seeing you and welcoming all our new families in the New Year. The build up to Christmas is always a very exciting time; the children are enjoying Christmas crafts, singing Christmas songs and talking lots about Santa coming soon! The preschool children have been practicing their Christmas songs ready to perform in front of their families for the annual Christmas concert. farmer tom
What an autumn we’ve had so far! In the 8 weeks from 10 September, 1 million tons of rainwater fell across our farm. It is a level of rainfall that has been unprecedented in recent times. The sowing of our winter crops has been severely affected with less than half of our rye and our winter barley sown, and all that was sown was nearly 2 months late. This not only means that the yield will be lower, but that higher seed rates are required as colder, wetter soils mean seeds are more likely to perish than prosper. At the time of writing we haven’t sown any of our winter wheat crop (our most important crop for our profits), and with the seed already purchased, it will possibly have to stay in the bag until next year - not only a waste of money, but with seed declining in quality with time, it will be less vigourous next year. It is frustrating now, but it will be incredibly hard in 12 months time when these issues start to really affect cash flow, not to mention the lack of straw, impoverished soils, and the chance that this time next year government policy may allow our markets to be flooded by cheap imports produced under conditions that are outlawed in the UK. But we mustn’t grumble. The rain will eventually cease and the sun will shine, and I try to take moments of joy in every day. At present I’m enjoying the huge flocks of starlings greedily gleaning our specially provided stubble fields left over winter for them; the birds congregate in the telephone wires,
‘roll’ across the fields with the birds at the back of the group flying to the front in continuous motion, and of course they perform the most spectacular displays at nightfall called ‘murmurations’ - where flocks of thousands seem to move as one. No matter what our situation, we can all find moments of joy in our day, and if we’re struggling, we can test the generosity of neighbours by asking for help. A friend of ours has written a book called ‘Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse’ - a series of illustrations and prose - with one scene depicting a young boy asking his friend, a horse, “what is the bravest thing you’ve ever said?” to which the horse replies “help”. As farmers, we will certainly need your help in the coming months. Christmas has become a time of retail, but look hard and you’ll find in the detail, it’s a time of families and friends coming together, of warmth and generosity, and celebrating the Greatest Gift.
Wherever you are this 25 December, we wish you a very Merry Christmas from our family to yours. Thanks for supporting British farmers, fishermen, and food pro ducers this year.

A naturally younger looking you Keep your skin hydrated, smooth and youthful for months ... Juvéderm Volite hydrates with hyaluronic acid which improves the skin quality, plumps the areas that have sagging skin, crepiness and have lost volume. It’s really exceptionally good for those annoying fine lines near the eyes, under the eyes and above the top lip as a dermal filler would normally be too bulky for these areas.
before
Juvéderm Volite actually does increase hydration and elasticity, smoothing fine lines and overall making the skin look healthier and more radiant.

Don’t just have good skin days – have good skin ways too! It’s just like having a moisturiser under the skin which is essential at any time of the year.

Stay Merry
not miserable in the run up to Christmas ‘Tis the season to be jolly – but as we prepare for the season of goodwill, not everyone shares the Christmas spirit.
CAMBRIDGESHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE Christmas is approaching! The time of year when we’re enjoying a tipple with friends, cooking up festive feasts for the family and entertaining loved ones. With all the fun to be had it is easy to be distracted when cooking in the kitchen. 50 per cent of all fires in the home start in the kitchen and more than half of those are as a result of distraction whilst cooking. We want to help ensure your festive cheer doesn’t go up in smoke this Christmas by sharing our tips below for safe cooking over the festive season: Never leave cooking unattended Do not cook when tired or under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication that makes you drowsy Regularly clean the grill pan and oven. Built up fat can easily catch fire Never leave anything cooking if you leave the house Do not leave anything flammable on or near the hob – tea towels, oven gloves and even washing baskets can catch fire Take care when using microwaves. Fires can start when people put food in too long. Oven chips or temperature control deep fat fryers are safer than using a chip pan. If you do use a chip pan, do not fill it more than one third with fat and turn the heat down if the oil starts smoking Fire can break out in household appliances so you should regularly maintain dishwashers, washing machines and driers, never leave them on if you go out or go to bed and register your appliances online to ensure you are made aware of any faults or recalls Have a working smoke alarm on each floor of your home. If it keeps going off when you are cooking it is probably in the wrong location or you may have the wrong type of smoke alarmNever take out the batteries out of your smoke alarm. If you do have a fire in the house, get out, stay out and dial 999. For more information log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk, follow us on social media or call 01480 444500.
With many of us starting the Christmas shopping earlier, there is a fair chance that many of our shop purchases and online orders are beginning to pile up. So, with gifts galore adding to the decorations, tree, food and drink - December is a time when many of us let our guard down, amid the excitement leading up to the big day. For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree, open car boots full of shopping, the possibility of an unlocked garage, or parcels left behind bins are rich pickings which can turn your Christmas from being merry into miserable!
stay safe

Pick pockets and purse dippers will also be out in force, whilst we are out shopping for gifts. Remember, pickpockets are very skilled at what they do, are extremely light-fingered and most of their thefts only take a second or two. And let’s not forget the increasing number of online scams – with retail fraudsters using the festive season as prime crime time. Equally, flaws in home security while out visiting friends and family are a beacon to thieves – so always remember to check your alarm and never leave doors, windows or garages unlocked.
T Don’t leave presents in full view And when it comes to shopping: – either in the home or in the back DO keep purses and bags closed seat of the car. and secure at all times T Shorter days mean longer time DO conceal your wallet in a for thieves to be in operation – buttoned or zipped pocket where it doesn’t bulge always lock your car and front door DO carry bags in front of you or when entering your home. diagonally across your chest T Keep a light on indoors and DO return cards to your purse outdoors if you are out visiting or wallet quickly and zip it up or friends or family. button it T It may be an idea to fit some DO use a money belt if you’re motion detector security lighting carrying a significant quantity – it won’t just be carol singers who of cash come calling. Money Matters WHO HAS A WILL?
by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
A case was recently reported in the Financial Times of two stepsisters who were arguing over which of them should inherit their late parents' house. The elderly couple had been found dead in their home, and it was not possible to determine who had died first. The situation was complicated because the father had not made a will and his younger wife had made no provision in her will for her step-daughter. If the wife was deemed to have died first her share in the home would pass to her husband. Under the intestacy rules his estate would pass only to his daughter and not to his wife's daughter. If the husband died first, the wife would inherit the property and it then would pass only to her own daughter under her will. The court decided that the Law of Property Act 1925 should apply, which determines that the elder of the two is deemed to have died first. The wife's daughter thus inherited the entire property to the exclusion of her stepsister. It is important to have an up-to-date will not only for IHT planning but also to prevent family disputes as described above. Perhaps you can use this shocking news story as time to check your own wills are correct and up to date and to think about the division of your assets after death.

If you want to take advantage of the 36% rate of IHT by leaving at least 10% of their net estate to charities then their will should include express provision for those gifts. (Rebecca Cave writing in TAXline October 2019)
May we also wish all our clients, readers, new and old, a very Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year.
