Can’t find it! Can’t reach it! Can’t turn it! Sound familiar? It may surprise you to hear that almost 33% of the British population doesn’t know where their stopcock is - or even if it works. And that 1 in 8 homes in the UK is likely to suffer a burst pipe or damage from water leakage throughout the year. Worse still, over 3,000 litres of water, almost 40 full bath tubs, could ruin your home from a single burst pipe in just one day. If you want peace of mind in being able to turn your water off as easily as flicking a light switch then call Optimum today for a free quotation

Yaxley Group Practice

Yaxley Health Centre Patients’ Association

Baby Immunisations on Thursday afternoons From the 10th December 2015 there has been a small change to the way that we manage the immunisation clinic. The clinic will be at the same time but we will now offer 5 minute appointments starting at 2pm. We hope by doing this it will help alleviate the congestion in our main Reception area. When you receive your letter from Child Health advising that your child is due for vaccination, the letter will now ask that you ring the surgery and make an appointment for a specific time. Carer Support Group Meeting The next meeting of the Carer Support Group will be on Wednesday 3rd February 2016 between 2pm-4pm in the Health Education Room. If you care for a family member or friend then you would be welcome to join our small but friendly group for coffee, biscuits and a chat. All Carers will be made very welcome. Half Day Closing The Practice will be closed on the following Wednesday afternoons. 10 February 2016 and 16 March 2016 from 1pm till 4.30pm.

SystmOne – Online Services SystmOnline is the practice system offering online access to appointment booking and cancellation for a range of clinics; online repeat prescription ordering, access to summary records (recent medication list, allergies and adverse reactions).

U

sing our online services will allow you to make your appointments at a time suitable to you and avoid our busy phone lines, particularly on a Monday morning. This should ensure quicker access to the practice and prevent long waits on the telephone. Many patients are finding the online ordering of repeat prescriptions to be quicker and much easier than manual ordering via the practice. Registering for the new system is straightforward and you can book appointments and doctor call backs from almost any computer or smartphone including at home or at work. You can register via our website at www.yaxleygp.nhs.uk and go to Online Services Application Form.

New kit for Holme Speedwatch

Cambridgeshire FIRE & RESCUE SERVICE

H

olme village has, for a long time, had considerable concern about the speed of traffic travelling through the village. As a result the Holme Speedwatch Team of volunteers was formed, supported by Cambridgeshire constabulary, and has been in operation for about 18 months with the goal of educating drivers to observe the speed limits. In November the speed limit on the B660 was reduced from 40 mph to 30 mph, requiring a greater presence to remind drivers of their responsibilities to observe the new limit. Previously we were sharing police provided equipment with 2 other villages so could only hold sessions every three weeks, which reduced our impact and as a result speeding vehicles rose back up to circa 25% of all through traffic. We are delighted that thanks to the support of Big Lottery Funding, Holme Forties Weekend Committee and a generous benefactor who lives in the village, we now

have our very own Speedwatch kit and will be able to hold sessions as often as we like. Our heartfelt thanks goes to those organisations. We have a cheerful band of 12 volunteers (some of whom are in the picture with our new kit) who go out in all weathers to remind drivers of their responsibilities to drive within the posted speed limits and as a result we hope to be able to reduce our speeding to a very low percentage, 0% is our ultimate aim, for the benefit of all residents as well as motorist using our roads. We continue to welcome new volunteers so if you feel you can spare a maximum of 2 hours each month come and join us. Contact csw.holme@btinternet.com for more information

A Good Read

The Ice Twins by SK Tremayne

Book reviews by Willow Coby

The Sisters Grimm: The Fairy-tale Detectives

AGE 10+

by Michael Buckley Praise for this novel, first published at the beginning of 2015, has spread like wildfire and it has become THE book to read. So just in case you are one of the few that hasn’t succumbed to this thriller, why should you pick it up? Whether you are a regular commuter, like the central character Rachel, or not, you will easily be able to identify with the opening section. How many times have you sat on a train and looked out of the window into the garden or kitchen windows of the houses that back onto the tracks, as you speed past on your way to your final destination. As you catch glimpses into a life that you don’t know, do you wonder about the people that occupy those houses? Rachel doesn’t have to wonder. She passes familiar houses every day and purposefully looks for Jess and Jason, a young professional couple who live a perfect life. She knows them and is in many ways envious of their relationship. Seeing them in their garden is a moment of comfort as her own life is falling apart. But is all as it seems? On one day, as the train slows down at a signal by the house, Rachel notices that something is amiss. Suddenly she is sucked into a nightmare that seems destined to reveal everything, and that will shock you as her commuter journey turns out to be anything but normal. It’s a small world, but when that world comes crashing down around you, it becomes all too clear that this small world is a lot smaller than you first thought.

DULT This month we have a hugely successful thriller which isA slowly spreading across social media, largely thanks to its inclusion in the Richard and Judy Book Club. Tremayne successfully plays on the greatest fear of every parent: losing their child. This is exactly what happened to Angus and Sarah Moorcroft. They lived the perfect life in London with their twin daughters, Kirstie and Lydia but a holiday to Sarah’s parents’ in Devon turned into tragedy when Lydia fell from a balcony and died. Or did she? Two girls, physically identical in every way but with very different personalities. Surely if anyone is able to tell them apart it would be their parents? Lydia, Sarah’s thoughtful and quiet daughter is dead and she must rebuild her life and keep going for the sake of Kirstie. A year after the accident, the family inherit a remote Scottish island and make arrangements to leave London where painful memories of Lydia are around every corner. Then Kirstie turns everything upside down with a simple question. “Why do you keep calling me Kirstie, Mummy? Kirstie is dead. It was Kirstie that died. I’m Lydia.” Could Angus and Sarah really have got it wrong? Or is Kirstie just grieving for her dead twin sister? Is there something special that unites identical twins, even beyond the grave, and causes confusion and guilt at being the one to survive? As the action moves to Scotland the fresh start that they hoped for comes crashing down around them. Just who did die on that day in Devon? And what exactly happened to cause a little girl to fall and lose her life? As the truth is slowly revealed, Sarah struggles to come to terms with the reality as she is slowly pulled into a pit of despair and anguish. The novel starts slowly but builds to a chilling climax that will haunt the reader long after the final paragraph has been digested.

Receive children. Receive me.

Yaxley Methodist Chapel

Women’s World Day of Prayer is an international, ecumenical, prayer movement that invites women, from a different part of the world each year, to prepare a worship service through which their hopes and fears for their country may be brought before the whole world in prayer.

O

n Friday 4 March an estimated 3 million people in over 170 countries and islands will gather to observe the day of prayer, using an order of service written by Christian women in Cuba and translated into over 60 languages and 1000 dialects. In the British Isles alone over 6,000 services will be held. The day begins as the sun rises over the island of Samoa and continues until it sets off the coast of American Samoa, some 35 hours later. The theme ‘Receive children. Receive me’ reflects St Mark’s Gospel, chapter 10 verses 13-16, which is the

focus of the service and a reminder that everyone is a child of God and equally worthy of our love and respect. The Republic of Cuba is the largest Caribbean island, located at the entrance of the Gulf of Mexico and called ‘the Key to the Gulf’. Politically at odds with the USA, Cuba suffered greatly due to the economic embargo imposed upon it in 1960 but has found strength within itself to move on and overcome many of its problems. This is not a day of prayer just for women - everyone is welcome to attend the service.

The Yaxley service will take place at 1.45pm Methodist Chapel, Main Street, Yaxley For further information and resources, together with details of the services in your area, please see the WWDP website: www.wwdp.org.uk

Saturday 20 February First race at 7.30pm. Come along and enjoy the fun. Thank you to all our Sponsors. All monies raised go to the Yaxley Health Centre Patients' Association.

The twelfth day after Christmas, 6 January, is Epithany. It is the day Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, the three kings, arrive at the stable. They are the first gentiles to see the baby Jesus. This year, I was lucky enough to be in Majorca on the night of the 5 January, when a boat with a golden star shining at the front sailed into the harbor. From it alighted three very imposing, beautifully dressed 'Kings' and they walked amongst the crowds. The wonder on the children's faces was a sight to behold. Then followed a parade, with the kings now on floats, up to the village in the hill where a living nativity was waiting in the open air church. Here the kings take their gifts to the holy family, and the people sing. It was a wonderful beginning to a new year ! Women's World Day of Prayer will be held at the chapel this year on Friday, 4 March starting at 2p.m. This year the service has been arranged by the women of Cuba. Men are welcome to come to the service too. Services Sunday Services and Junior Church start at 10.30 a.m. every Sunday. Everyone is welcome to join us. Coffee Morning this month is on Saturday 13th February from 10 a.m. As usual we will be selling our delicious homemade cakes and scones . Come in from the cold and warm up with a hot cup of coffee or tea and meet friends, old and new. Minister: Gareth Baron 01733 314147; Yaxleymc@gmail.com

Keeping divorce costs down Divorce costs often hit the headlines when we learn that multimillionaires have spent £000’s on their divorce, but in reality the “average” divorce costs much less and there are ways to keep the costs down. Top tips for keeping costs down  Take advantage of a free initial consultation At Woolley & Co we offer a free 30 minute consultation which allows us to obtain basic information about you and your circumstances and we can then discuss key issues in your situation and the options for dealing with them.  Consider all options for resolving any disputes There are now a number of methods for discussing and settling the financial and other issues that arise on separation or divorce such as negotiation or mediation. A lawyer will explore these with you. There is no “one size fits all” solution.  Do your homework A lawyer cannot give you definite advice about a proposed financial settlement without full information. You can prepare by gathering together the documents and information your lawyer requires as early as possible.  Do some thinking too Consider where you and your children will live. If you want to stay in your home can you afford to do so? If the house is sold, could you afford to purchase a suitable property for you and your children? Speak to mortgage advisors to find out what your mortgage capacity is and to estate agents to see how much other suitable properties may cost.  Be clear on the costs from the start Your Lawyer should give you a breakdown of all the likely costs involved and in many cases will be able to offer a fixed price for the divorce or other money pit. Sensible advice coupled with sensible people can help to ensure the experience is as painless and cost effective as possible but more importantly that you and your children can move forward with your lives in the best possible way. Holme WI We had a great time at Peterborough regional college in December at their Christmas Lunch meal, the food is made and served by students on the catering courses at the college, a very nice time was had by all who went. We also had our annual meal in January at the Admiral Wells public house; this as always was fantastic, great food, great staff and a very enjoyable night. We are back to meeting on the first Thursday of each month from February at Holme village hall, new members will be very welcome, Thursday 4th at 7.30pm. Happy New Year from all at Holme WI.

Yaxley WI In December members and visitors, after enjoying sweet & savoury finger food, were entertained by music and humour from Pat, Pat & Brian. Pat & Brian sung and played guitar with songs ranging from the sixties to country & western and Christmas carols. The other Pat recited humorous poems and jokes in the style of Pam Ayres/Joyce Grenfell and had some of us in tears of laughter. Altogether a very enjoyable evening. Pauline Brown presented Gay Davies with a cup for gaining the most points in competitions throughout the year. Our speaker for 11 February is a female Chelsea Pensioner which should be a very informative talk. If you are thinking of joining the WI or would just like to visit why not come along to listen to this very interesting lady. Meetings held at The Lancaster Club, Main Street, Yaxley at 7.30pm, doors open at 7pm.

We enjoy working together to help local, national and international charities - and are proud to have made a positive impact on lives of millions of people. We make firm friendships with like minded women who become friends for life. We work on exciting and fun projects that leave us with an inspiring sense of satisfaction. "We are women of action, working together to make a difference and improve lives." We have plans for the future and were calling on women like you to join us.

Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Laws info@birdandlaws.co.uk and if of general interest we will publish them here.

Taxation Question: I have received two invoices for items I had purchased and one invoice charged me VAT on the postage, whilst the other did not. Should I have been charged VAT on the postage? Answer: It’s a common misapprehension that all post is exempt from VAT, but the position is more complicated than that and businesses should to be aware of the correct position. The basic position is that posting letters or parcels with the Royal Mail Group PLC (Post Office) is exempt from VAT, but that does not apply to businesses recharging those costs. Any other courier or delivery costs charged by delivery companies other than the Post Office are subject to VAT at the standard rate. Many businesses make a charge for delivery of goods and in many cases the delivery is undertaken by the Post Office and the costs incurred by the business are exempt from VAT. HMRC take the view that there are two separate supplies; the supply by the Post Office to the business which is exempt from VAT; and the supply of the delivered goods by the business to it’s customer. When a business is making a supply of delivered goods, they are making a single ‘composite supply’ and the liability of the postage charges follows that of the goods. You should therefore have been charged VAT on the postage by both of your purchases. Claiming back VAT on business trips: The rules for recovering VAT in expenses incurred on a business trip can be something of a minefield. Apart from not knowing whether or not VAT is recoverable, another common problem is knowing whether the costs have VAT on them to begin with. You can generally reclaim the VAT on travel and subsistence expenses where a director, partner, sole proprietor or employee is away from their normal place of work on a business trip. The business must pay for the actual cost or a proportion of the actual cost. You can’t reclaim VAT on expenses if you pay an employee a flat rate per day or night. However, if you pay for the exact cost of the expense and the employee keeps the invoice then you can reclaim the VAT.

National Yorkshire Pudding Day by Louise Addison

From 2008 the first Sunday in February has been designated National Yorkshire Pudding Day!

T

he traditional Yorkshire Pudding first got its name in 1747 according to local legend, when Hannah Glasse wrote a cookery book titled The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Simple. She included a Yorkshire Pudding recipe; but no-one really knows how far back the original recipe goes as some form of batter or dripping pudding, as it was previously named, has been cooked for centuries. Early puddings were flatter than today’s version and were cooked in a tin beneath the meat, which was roasted on a spit over a fire. The pudding was positioned to catch all the drippings from the meat. Dripping was an important part of the diet in those days because the human body actually needs some fat to enable it to absorb certain vitamins, but unlike today sources of fat were more difficult to obtain as meat was expensive so was only cooked on special occasions. Extra drippings from any meat added a welcome and much-needed supplement. The Yorkshire pudding was usually made in a large tray, and was often served with gravy before the main meal as a filler, so less meat was required for the main course. The recipe is pretty simple, just eggs, milk and plain flour. A Yorkshire-born aunty once warned me never to use self-raising flour, or any kind of raising agent because doing so will mean your puds will be spongy and soggy. Also the batter has to be the right consistency, a little thicker then unwhipped double cream, and as smooth as possible. To achieve the best, most crispy Yorkshire puds trickle about 3mm / 1/8 inch of very hot fat in the bottom of the tin, then heat it up. As the fat begins to smoke, add the batter. Enjoy!

Toad in the Hole Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients 100g plain flour ½ tsp English mustard powder Good pinch of salt 1 egg 300ml milk 1 tsp dried thyme 8 plain pork sausages 2 tbsp sunflower oil 2 onions, peeled and sliced 1 tsp soft brown sugar 500ml good quality beef stock

Recipe

Method For the Batter  Preheat oven to 220C / gas 7. Sift the flour, salt and mustard powder together into a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the centre or the flour, crack in the egg, then pour in a little milk. Stir with a wooden spoon or a balloon whisk, gradually incorporating some of the flour. Keep adding milk and continue stirring until all the milk and flour has been mixed together and the batter is smooth and lump-free. It should be the consistency of unwhipped double cream. Stir in the thyme.  Place the sausages into a 20 x 30cm roasting tin. Add 1 tbsp of the oil, tossing the sausages in it to thoroughly coat the base of the tin, then roast in the oven for 15 mins.  Remove the hot tray from the oven, then quickly pour in the batter – it will sizzle and bubble a little when it hits the hot fat. Return the tray to the oven. Bake for 40 mins until the batter is cooked, well risen and crispy. For the Gravy Cook the onions with the remaining oil gently in a non-stick pan until they are golden brown. Caramelise them by adding the sugar for the final 5 minutes. Add the spoonful of flour, then cook, stirring continuously, for 2 mins. Gradually pour in the stock, stirring well to make a smooth sauce. Simmer for 4-5 mins to thicken, then season to taste. Cut the toad in the hole into large wedges and serve with the gravy spooned over.

Stay safe and say ‘No’ to Doorstep Traders Rogue traders cause misery for thousands of people each year; most of which are the elderly and vulnerable in our communities. These uninvited traders call at properties offering to do home maintenance work such as roofing, tarmacing and paving, garden and tree surgery, insulation, general building work, burglar alarms and other services. The work or service offered can sometimes be unnecessary, overpriced, of a poor standard or not done at all. Typically they have no formal training to carry out the work offered and some may have links with distraction burglars. It is important that people have the confidence to say NO

to doorstep traders and take the time to think about the service being offered. If you have an experience with a rogue trader, please report it by telephoning 101. For live incidents where the rogue trader is still at the property, or is due to return, contact the police on 999. The police have a protocol for dealing with these incidents and welcome your contact. If you need a recommendation for a safe, approved local trades person, go to www.safelocaltrades.com or call free on 0800 014 1832.

The following is advice on how people can avoid being scammed by rogue doorstep traders: • Be cautious; if a trader knocks at your door, DO NOT agree to on the spot house repairs without taking advice • Be wary of special offers or warnings that your house is unsafe • Don’t allow anyone to pressure you into agreeing to have work carried out; if you ask them to leave and they don’t, contact the police on 999 • Do not make snap decisions; if you feel that any work is required on your property, take time to talk to family or neighbours before you make a decision • Don’t ever go to a bank or cash point with a trader; legitimate traders would never do this!

To find out more information about how rogue traders operate, Eileen Le Voi, owner of Safe Local Trades, will be doing a presentation at the Crime & Anti-social Behaviour Public Meeting on Thursday 11 February at William de Yaxley Academy If you need a recommendation for a safe, approved local tradesperson then visit www.safelocaltrades.com or call free phone 01733 530019

This is an open meeting for everyone to attend, so please take the time and join us. To date we have been very active, we are working with the Local Police, residents and security businesses to ensure this initiative works. Our plan for Communities against Crime is as follows: Working in cooperation with local Police, residents and business.  Working with Cambridgeshire Neighborhood Watch. towards a safer local environment. Several conversations are taking place here. Examining the feasibility of crowd-funded security initiatives that meet Police approval. Quotations have already been secured.  Promoting the scheme to the public at large through various social media platforms and just as importantly via traditional methods such as the Yaxley Gazette for those not online. Work is in progress but mail shotting has begun for the watch schemes. Plans to promote the project at Yaxley Festival 2016.  Promoting education in schools on issues related to anti-social behaviour. Work in progress.  Developing software with protocols that interface with existing alert systems. Integrating this into a local community hub website and mobile application. In progress.  Brokering meaningful local insurance and security device discounts for residents engaged in the project.

 Tackling ASB through the provision of youth services and activities. Working with organisations including the Fenland Trust, Total Sports and Cambs County Council. To streamline communications regarding the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme element of our project, we have set up an enquiry form and dedicated email address. You can express an interest in starting a local scheme as coordinator, volunteering to support your local scheme or offering support in way of sponsorship. This applies to Yaxley or any of the surrounding villages. All enquiries will be collated and we will work closely with Cambridgeshire Neighbourhood Watch to coordinate the project. Please email nhw@fen.land or use the contact form on the Fenland Trust website www.fen.land

SCHOOLS COMMUNITY SCHOOLS NEWS

Fourfields

Holme Village PreSchool

After the Christmas break, the children at Fourfields have returned full of energy to start the New Year and a new term at school. The break was most certainly well-earned, especially for the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 children, who put on some amazing performances in their Christmas productions. Children and adults alike were given a real treat as the children took to the stage – clear voices, spectacular singing and an array of wonderful costumes demonstrated the Fourfields spirit at its best. We were incredibly proud to receive an overwhelming amount of donations from our audiences this year and can announce that £577 was raised for the ‘Institute of Cancer Research.’ Thank you so much for your generosity. We now look forward to our next production, which will be performed by Years 3 and 4 in the run up to Easter. The school has many things to be excited about this year, starting with our Literacy Week, which will take place during the week commencing the 25th January. Bedtime stories, a class poetry slam and a book swap are just some of the events planned already. Children will also have the opportunity to design the official school library card for our ‘Books on Wheels’ library bus. Time to get creative! www.fourfields.cambs.sch.uk

It is amazing how well the children have settled quickly and calmly. We have had lots of discussions about Christmas activities and experiences and although it seems such a long time ago now the Nativity performance was such a big highlight for all the children and their families. Here at Holme Village Pre-school we pride ourselves in offering such a small and personal childcare facility for children from the age of 2 years. Which means all children are truly valued and listened to. Our ethos of ‘Down to Earth Learning Through Play’ is reflected in our thoroughly thought out session plans where the children’s imagination is key to expanding their development. Our new Baby & Toddler Group is running on a Friday morning 9:30-11:30am, everyone is welcome, charge is per session: £2 per toddler & £1 babies (under 6m) 50p per additional child. Refreshments and snack for child. Looking for a lovely little village Pre-school? It’s never too early to get your child’s name down. Sawtry Village Academy At the end of last term, Sawtry Village Academy launched its first ‘Pledge Day’ – Head Boy Aaron Parak and Head Girl Hollie Johnson tell us more! If you haven’t heard of the ‘Pledges’ scheme before, it’s an awards system which is designed to offer students a range of character-building opportunities to enhance learning and development. Sawtry Village Academy expects every student to complete each of the seven Pledges during their time here, at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. The system encourages many important qualities in students including responsibility, expectation, intuition and citizenship, all of which are crucial for developing our employability. Pledges are a CMAT-wide initiative, and this academic year, we’ve launched our first ‘Pledge Day’. On December 16th, each House at Sawtry Village Academy chose a different Pledge to deliver to their tutees. All 1299 students participated and were engaged in a variety of activities focused on five different Pledges: Leadership, Service, Environment, Diversity and Participation. There were lots of activities going on where students got the opportunity to go on trips, take part in upcycling projects, or even dance. The students photographed here were supporting teachers and students at William de Yaxley School. Each student worked with a classroom teacher and helped with marking Maths work, creating Christmas hats and photocopying resources for lessons. You can learn more about the Pledges scheme by visiting our website - www.sawtryva.org

Yaxley Infants The New Year has got off to a great start at Yaxley Infant School. Once the excitement of returning back to school from the Christmas holidays with stories of exciting times with family and special visits from Father Christmas had settled down, we began to think about our next topic, which for Year One and Two is Happy Body, Healthy Body. We began our new theme by asking the children what they wanted to find out about their bodies and keeping healthy, they amazed us all with their questions. They ranged from; “What are teeth made of?”, “How does sound get into your ear?” And even “Do boys run faster than girls?” Which we think will set up a series of fantastic scientific investigations. Year One started by sharing the story “Jim and the Beanstalk”, a story about a poor giant who is now so old he has lost all of his teeth and can no longer enjoy his favourite food…. of fried boy on toast! Until, Jim introduces him to false teeth. Can you guess what happens next? Year Two have also been busy, just this week a mystery box was delivered which appears to have holes for air but no other clues! The children have been trying to work out what may be inside and what they will need to do to look after it. Hopefully it will be something friendly! We are a small, family friendly school specialising in the Early Years. If you would like to visit and find out more about the way we work please call (01733 240918) and make an appointment.

SCHOOLS COMMUNITY NEWS HOME & GARDEN

My name is Tom and having spent a decade in London working in the glamorous world of media I have come home to the place I love, to the family farm, to learn all about farming.

Farmer Tom

My family have been farmers for generations and whilst I’ve always helped out, I have a lot to learn about an industry that’s quickly become very technically advanced. I love the outdoors, and am proud to support local, seasonal, British food, and in the last year I’ve had lots of fun learning about what it takes to put dinner on the plate. There’s lots going on in our parishes on the other side of the farm gate, and I’d love to invite you into that world… In February, there’s lots of maintenance work going on here on the farm. We’ve trimmed hedges (we cut them twice every five years), we’re improving drainage by clearing out ditches, and we’re repairing fences and maintaining machinery. We’re hoping for cold, dry, weather (sorry to those of you that feel the cold) as frosty weather is better for our sheep - wet weather means they get mud between their

22

toes (hooves) which is painful, causes infection and makes them go lame. We also need a little cold weather to reduce the number of bugs, fungus, and disease – winter is nature’s deep cleanse. I’ve seen midges swarming by the hedgerows which are never usually seen in January! The sheep are checked daily to ensure they’re all healthy, happy, and are in the same field we left them in! Do please shut any gates behind you when you go through. We’re also feeding hedgerow birds as the natural supply of seeds and fruit from last year is running low; this is one condition of the government support. If you want to know any more, do check out my ‘Farmer Tom’ page on Facebook, or follow me on Twitter. The details are all at www.about.me/ FarmerTom. Oh, and I’ll look forward to writing again next month, covering food, farming, and the countryside.

SCHOOLS COMMUNITY NEWS HOME & GARDEN

Making your garden bird-friendly WINTER Winter is notoriously a difficult time of year for birds, and figures from bird monitoring schemes suggest that populations of the most widespread species have dropped by around 421 million across Europe since 1980.

F

ood is hard to come by in winter, making it extremely important that we do everything we can to encourage birds into our gardens throughout the winter. Here, Adrian Nind, Managing Director at Bakker Spalding Garden Company, provides four top tips for making your garden bird-friendly.

1

Feed the birds!

There has long been a downward trend of birds in gardens in the UK. Since 1979, starlings visiting gardens in winter have dropped by 84% since the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch began. During the cold weather, food can become scarce for birds so we need to give them a helping hand. Don’t forget that birds will only feed where they feel safe, so always place the food approximately 1.75m high in a place with an open view, and implement squirrel baffles to keep squirrels away. There is a huge range of food and shelters available for birds which is perfect for the winter months.

2

Make your garden somewhere to forage

In addition to providing bird seed and leftover food, there are a variety of plants and trees which can attract birds to your garden and provide food throughout the winter. It’s important to create somewhere for birds to forage and feed in our gardens. Make sure you wait to tidy borders and cut shrubs until late winter and early spring – this will help retain seeds and fruit for birds. Fruiting bushes are also a great source of food for birds during the winter. So don’t prune too much just yet!

3

Encourage safe habitats

Make sure that any bird boxes in your garden have ventilation holes at the top and drainage holes below. They should also be placed out of danger of any predators. During the winter, nest boxes should be cleared of any old nest material to prevent pests and diseases

TIPS

spreading to next year’s occupants, but now is a good time to start ensuring that you have suitable nesting materials available in your garden. One of our customers is known to regularly groom her dog and place all the fur from the brush into her hedges for the birds to nest with.

4

Keep water sources clean and accessible

Alongside a supply of food, birds need to have access to a supply of water all year round – not just to drink, but also to bathe and keep their feathers in good condition. Ponds provide water for birds and attract additional wildlife to your garden. However, it is likely they may freeze over throughout winter so remember to break up any ice in harsh weather. If a bird bath gets completely frozen, remove all the ice and refill so that the birds always have access to some water.

Yaxley Football Club Its been a busy festive period down at Yaxley FC with a large number of matches going on.

T

he Academy sides have been especially busy and although the results have been mixed, performances and entertainment levels have been high. Our 3g pitch has been working hard with the Yaxley Sixes on a Monday (search on Facebook if you want to enter a team, but be quick there are only a few spots left in the league), first team Tuesday, junior training Wednesday, Academy Thursday and Veterans Friday! Phew. The idea of a stadium for the community to use all day, all week is certainly coming a step nearer. Lots of hard work behind the scenes from a dedicated core of volunteers is bearing fruit. If you haven’t been to have a look at the facility yet, you would be most welcome.

The Ladies section continues to go from strength to strength with positive results and players developing their game. We are really proud to have them on board. Elsewhere, first team Captain, Dan Cotton (pictured) has been nominated for the Peterborough Telegraph Footballer of the Year. He won the title in 2014 and faces stiff opposition to retain it. Let’s hope he can through as at the time of writing he has already scored 26 goals from 35 appearances this season. A fantastic return. The run in to the season is looking likely to see silver wear coming for a number of the clubs junior sides and we will keep you up to date as we go.

The team has been working very hard to promote their unusual shirt sponsorship with Help for Heroes. The players chose to have the name on their shirts as opposed to a usual commercial sponsor, something we as a club and village should be very proud of. Sgt Mark Sutcliffe MBE came down to Yaxley FC to meet the boys and he spoke to them about his experiences and the charity we are raising awareness for. It was a really moving and positive experience that the lads took a lot from.

Yaxley Bowls

Cycling calendar supports local cause

Well the nights are starting to draw out, the grass is growing and as always the bowls green looks superb and we all can’t wait to be playing again.

Over £100 has been donated by Yaxley Riders to East Anglian Air Ambulance through the sale of a cycling calendar.

Bowlers old and new take note, the green will be open on Friday 15th April, with a our first friendly club game, the President’s team v Captain’s team on Saturday 23rd April, this always proves a fun day. We offer a warm welcome to any new members, if you are interested in joining us, why not phone our club Secretary Kathy Browning (tel: 01733 241967), for a chat on how you can become involved. Getting together as a club to celebrate success is always a good way to begin a new year and get the members motivated for the start of the season ahead. As we did last year, we will be holding our 2015 dinner and presentation night, at the Yaxley Football Club, Friday 4th March 6:30 for 7pm - £14 per ticket. Tickets are now on sale; contact Richard Day (tel: 01733 236778). Raising funds for the club is important so please, don’t forget the Beetle Drive 7pm - Saturday 20th Feb in the club pavilion. For up-to-date information on events please check our WEB-site www.yaxleybowls.co.uk

ACUPUNCTURE

We all welcome our new club President for 2016, Mr. Rob Dearnley, (pictured), Rob has long been captain of our weekend team the Yaxley Sharks. We wish him every success for the year ahead.

T

he idea for the calendar came from Yaxley Riders member Alex Ashcroft. She said: “I was keen to produce a calendar for the members of Yaxley Riders; cyclists love taking photos and being in them.” She approached fellow rider Claire Piercy, who owns Design Partners Creative Ltd, with the idea and she was keen to help with the design and production. On July 23, one of the group’s members, Karen Freeman, was returning home after a group ride. As she crossed Norman Cross roundabout, a car exiting the northbound slip road was in a collision with Karen and she was knocked off her bike. The East Anglian Air Ambulance attended along with a road ambulance. Karen was taken to Addenbrookes Hospital and put into a medically induced coma. Karen’s partner and family had a tense wait as the extent of Karen’s head injuries were, at the time, unknown. Karen also sustained numerous fractures to the right

Give your pet something to smile about! We all know the importance of looking after our own teeth – brush our teeth twice daily, regular checkups with a Dentist etc. But how often do you think about your pet’s dental health?

D

ental problems are one of the common ailments we see – a shocking 80% of cats & dogs over the age of 3 years have a degree of dental disease. Their problems differ from ours – where we suffer more commonly with tooth decay and demineralisation, our pets suffer more commonly with periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection affecting the gums and bone around the tooth and it originates from plaque build-up. Plaque is a mixture of bacteria and proteins derived from saliva and food which naturally accumulate in the mouth where it sticks to the teeth. It can be easily removed, but after 48 hours the plaque calcifies and becomes a grey or brown hard substance called tartar(which is difficult to remove). The bacteria and tartar build up cause the gums to inflame (gingivitis) and recede, where it progresses to infection and destruction of the tooth socket. This damage is irreversible and painful, often leading to losing the tooth. The bacteria associated with periodontal disease can also enter the bloodstream and there is evidence it can cause damage to major organs including the heart, liver and kidneys. So looking after our pet’s teeth is more than just avoiding bad breath!

26

How do you know if your pet is suffering from periodontal disease? Bad breath is the first indication. Gums which bleed during chewing, reluctance to eat and excessive drooling are also common signs. If you are worried about your pet’s dental health, please see your Vet for a checkup. What can you do about it? In the early stages any discomfort can be reversed and damage prevented by removing the plaque. This is done most effectively by daily brushing, but there are also special foods, chews and supplements that can help. If you want to know more about the dental products and tooth brushing, please book appointment with your Veterinary Nurse. IMPORTANT: Be sure to use Veterinary approved toothpaste Human toothpaste often contains Xylitol which is poisonous to dogs and fluoride which can be harmful to both cats and dogs. In the later stages of periodontal disease, professional Veterinary treatment will be necessary. Under general anesthetic the Vet can remove tartar (including cleaning below the gumline where bacteria also accumulate) both by hand and by using ultrasonic cleaning equipment. The Vet can also remove any painful and damaged teeth at this time.

Tooth brushing tips

• Get your pet used to ha ving their face handled – rub and stroke your pe t’s face around the mouth regularly – don’t forget to reward them with pla y or a small treat. Repeat da ily for at least 5 days. • Start by using your fing ertip with a little pet toothpaste. Keeping you r pet’s mouth closed, be gin with the canine teeth an d work backwards down the inside of their cheeks . Do this gradually over the course of a few sessions. For now ignore the inside surface of the teeth and the small incisor teeth at the front, they are often the most difficult. • Once your pet is happ y with this, start to includ e the incisor teeth in you r routine. • Progress to a specially designed toothbrush wh en your pet is comfortable with the finger brushing . • You may now also includ e the inside surfaces of the teeth when they are use d to the toothbrush. • Start young – it is gene rally better accepted. BU T it’s never too late – older pets can learn too. • Be patient – it’s a stran ge sensation for our pe ts and it takes time for the m to accept it . • ONLY use Veterinary ap proved toothpaste.

What is Dermapen? DERMAPEN FNS – Natural skin repair at the Cosmetic Clinic.

or natural skin regeneration and scar repair the genuine Dermapen FNS® therapy can dramatically improve the appearance of acne scars, aged and sun damaged skin, facial and décolleté lines, wrinkles and stretch marks. The procedure provides advanced micro-medical skinneedling which stimulates the skin to regenerate and repair itself naturally and safely, creating smoother, brighter, healthier and younger looking skin. The micro needles of the Dermapen FNS® creates new collagen and elastin to be generated and at the same time has the added benefit of new capillary growth which improves

the blood supply and gives a healthy foundation for the new skin. The more the skin is stimulated the more the scar tissue is broken down leaving the existing skin to look smoother and thicker. This procedure is less painful than ablative and non-ablative treatments and the healing time is approximately 2-3 days which is considerably less than other micro-needling treatments.

Ok so I am not one for facial treatments I am a 'wash and go type of girl', so when it was suggested that I should try the Dermapen Treatment and have needles in my face I was a little scared. However the treatment has been a success, it's got rid of my fine lines and sun damage, and I am now a factor 50 plus girl. The Cosmetic Clinic gave me some Tebiskin to use a few days before the treatment to prepare my skin, I arrived at the clinic to be greeted by the Lovely Jean and Leah who would be jabbing me with needles, I needn't have worried it wasn't painful, maybe because I had my face covered in numbing cream first, it just felt like someone was lightly scratching my face. So to the downtime I was shocked when

I looked in the mirror before leaving the surgery, I looked like I had been in the sun for a week without any suncream I was as red as a beetroot, the next day wasn't to bad but I avoided seeing anyone and day three I had a dinner party with low lighting so it was fine! Since my treatment I have been very impressed my skin looks better most of my sun damage has gone, fewer lines and I have been left with a softer smoother skin. So would I recommend? I certainly would and I have booked in for my third treatment in a few weeks time. J.E (Yaxley)

January and February: The Dermapen FNS treatment offer for face is £150 per treatment and £400 for 3 treatments if paid upfront.

Curb your impatience, as some things just take time. If progress is being made, allow matters to unfold at their own speed. Fitness goes to the top of your agenda by the 19th, perhaps even signing up for an event, address any health niggles before you commence.

Aries March 21-April 20 You are bursting to get on with your career, either in a new job or even working for yourself, either way you are sure to make a success of it. The focus is swiftly bought to your love life after the 10th, so if you see any green or red flags, pay attention.

Taurus April 21-May21

This is a month to really get to grips with socialising and networking, you are set to meet some very interesting and influential people, who can open some amazing doors for you. Is it love or lust you are feeling right now? Either way it’s excellent, fun and will get your mind racing.

Gemini May 22-June 22 Finances might be on the slim side, but show some patience and keep plugging away steadily. Romance blossoms for single Geminis, particularly if you have a shared interest or hobby. Settled, spend some quality time together and show each other how you feel. Cancer June 23-July 23 Venus is well placed in your chart from the 12th, both professionally and romantically and you could find yourself with more than one admirer vying for your attention. A proposition from someone at a distance cannot be ignored, is there any feasible way of making things happen?

Leo July 24-August 23

This is a good time to upgrade our skills, put in for a promotion or apply for a better job. Don’t put too much emphasis on what does or doesn’t happen on the 14th; the best is to come later in the month. Think carefully before committing to an indulgent purchase as you could later regret it.

Virgo August 24-September 23 A relationship with either a partner or family member may well reach a make or break situation, and events on or around the 21st will prove crucial to the decision you make. This is a good year for Virgo - be fearless, failure is not an option.

Libra September 24-October 23 Secrets have a funny way of coming out eventually, so don’t assume that yours are safe. Take charge and tell those concerned, before they find out for themselves. Travel, romance and creative opportunities, can all bring you the much needed joy you crave, but it’s up to you to go out there and get it.

Scorpio October 24-November 22 Be spontaneous this month and watch your world open up. Travel or a move to new territory is now within your grasp, be prepared for the challenge. Looking for love? It could be right under your nose already, why are you playing so hard to get?

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Whether for work or pleasure, your feet won’t get chance to touch the ground. you like being busy, but this could be exhausting, so pace yourself. invest some time and energy into a relationship and put the spark back in it. Make an effort to stay in shape both mentally and physically.

Capricorn December 22-January 20 Get ready for one of the best months of the year. Venus is in your sign and will be determined to conquer both hearts and minds. Just keep your personal and professional lives separate, as even though there could be a tempting offer, think hard about the consequences. Aquarius January 21-February 19 The year begins with a resolution on your part to have greater success in your career. Mercury is retrograde until the 25th so delays are inevitable, but be patient, it will be worth the wait. Make your feelings clear romantically, you may have to spell things out to avoid confusion.

If your birthday is this month This is a great time to have your say, on many matters. There is an air of opportunity coming your way, and travel will be high on your agenda from mid-month. A romantic pull may be impossible to ignore, if you are single, what’s stopping you?

the language of

flowers

By Susan Brookes-Morris It’s nearly Valentine’s Day and millions will be rushing out to buy or send flowers. Traditionally this will be red roses of course. Others may choose their purchases on the basis of colour, smell or even price but there’s a whole language and meaning to flowers too which is called Floriography. Roses: - Red Roses as most will know symbolise Love and Desire but changing the colour of the flower leads to different connotations. For example, Yellow is for friendship, Pink for perfect happiness and Orange for fascination. There are different meanings for specific types of rose too, such as Tea Roses meaning ‘I’ll remember always’ and Dog Roses connecting to pain and pleasure. Formations also have an impact. Thinking back to the traditional dozen red roses, a bunch of a single bloom, means I love you or I still love you, whilst an assortment of colours represents the sentiment ‘you’re everything to me.’ A dozen red roses has become the norm, because of the significance of the number twelve within nature, philosophy and religion. The number 12 often represents a full cycle, so 12 months of the year, 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 hours on a clock for instance. From ancient times, cultures around the world have developed calendars based on cycles of twelve, and there are many mythological and religious connections to the number also. The use of 12 across the natural and spiritual world means that 12 or a dozen, has taken on a universal quality which enhances the significance of a dozen roses. Turning now to other flowers we frequently buy in the UK: Carnations:- Pink carnations mean ‘I’ll never forget you,’ whilst red symbolise admiration and yellow rejection and disappointment, so probably best to avoid those! Lilies: - Calla Lilies represent beauty and Tiger Lilies wealth so the latter is perhaps a good choice if you are looking to impress. Tulips: - Apparently show love and passion too. Yellow ones which are my daughter’s favourite, mean ‘there’s sunshine in your smile,’ whereas red tulips are a declaration of love and white ones say ‘I’m worthy of you.’ Daffodils: - Show regard. Freesias: - Demonstrate trust. Of course there are many more wonderful flowers to choose from, so if you really want to be sure of making the right impression, it’s worth asking your florist about their meaning.
