SystmOne – Online Services Each month we will now be giving you an update from the Yaxley group practice as so many of you have asked for this as you this centre as your local health centre.
S
ystmOnline is the practice system offering online access to appointment booking and cancellation for a range of clinics; online repeat prescription ordering, access to summary records (recent medication list, allergies and adverse reactions). Using our online services will allow you to make your appointments at a time suitable to you and avoid our busy phone lines, particularly on a Monday morning. This should ensure quicker access to the practice and prevent long waits on the telephone. Many patients are finding the online ordering of repeat prescriptions to be quicker and much easier than manual ordering via the practice. Registering for the new system is straightforward and you can book appointments and doctor call backs from almost any computer or smartphone including at home or at work. You can register via our website at www.yaxleygp.nhs.uk and go to Online Services Application Form. Doctors’ telephone call-backs are now available to book online, these can be booked the NIGHT BEFORE from 6.30pm for the following day meaning you can book in the evening without a long queue on the telephone each morning. This is in addition to the appointments already available to book online: • NHS Health Checks • Routine Blood Tests • INRs Appointments • Smears • Smoking Cessation Clinic • Diabetes Annual Reviews • Chronic Heart Disease Appointments • Purple Clinics (For patients who have been informed they are part of this programme with more than one long term condition e.g. Hypertension, Asthma, CHD, COPD and CKD)
+ Hampton Health Patient Online is NHS England’s programme designed to support GP practices to offer and promote online services to patients.
For a while patients have been able to book appointments, renew prescriptions and view very basic information from your medical records such as your medications and allergies. From March 2016 you will be able to see even more including illnesses, immunisations and test results. Just like online banking, you can look at your GP records on a computer, a tablet or a smartphone, using a website or an app. You can look at your records whenever you choose to, without needing to print them. Online records are up to date and more secure than a printed paper record which could get lost or seen by others. You can ask at the surgery to register for this service, however as we need to protect your record we will need to see some form of photo ID and proof of address as part of the registration process, to check who you are and make sure you see only your own record. Your surgery will then give you a letter with your unique username and password. It will also tell you about the website, where you can log in and start using online services. Information on how to get started is also available online at: www.nhs.uk/patientonline

Guitar and bass lessons Don’t move in too soon! Should divorcing wives or husbands who become involved in another relationship see their divorce settlements reduced as a result? Mr Justice Mostyn said in a case in the Family Division of the High Court last month that such relationships were “a significant fly in the ointment” when the court was deciding how much money husbands should give wives on a marriage breakup. (It is usually that way round). The case in question involved a journalist and her estranged husband who came from a wealthy family and the woman had started a new relationship nine months before with a man who was about to buy a house. The predicament of the Judge was whether he should take the new relationship into account when assessing the wife’s needs for rehousing. Such an approach is actually not good law at the present time. The intention to cohabit in the near future or even cohabitation itself is usually viewed by the Court as unimportant, because there is no legal force to a live-in relationship – it is only marriage which brings with it rights and obligations. This is despite years of campaigning by various interested bodies, trying to get cohabitation formalised in the eyes of the law, especially for women who can risk being stranded, penniless and homeless, even after a very long relationship. Judge Mostyn has therefore not made new law, but could this be the start of a trend of the courts to give greater weight to the relevance of cohabitation in divorce cases? So, just a note of warning…

So what will you do with your extra day this February?
L
eap Day, on February 29th, has been a day of traditions, folklore and superstitions ever since Leap Years were first introduced by Julius Caesar over 2000 years ago. According to an old Irish legend, or possibly history, St. Brigid struck a deal with St. Patrick to allow women to propose to men – and not just the other way round – every four years. In some places, Leap Day has been known as ‘Bachelors Day’ for the same reason. Leap Day is also known as St. Oswald’s Day, named after an Archbishop of York who died on February 29th 992. People born on February 29th are all invited to join the Honor Society of Leap Year Day babies. According to the Guinness Book of Records, there are Leap Day World Record Holders both of a family producing three consecutive generations born on February 29th and of the number
6
of children born on February 29th in the same family. There are 4 million worldwide born on February 29th! Jesus said, ‘Let the children come to me and do not hinder them.’ Like Jesus, we love welcoming babies into CSK, whether to a service on a Sunday, to one of our Ark mid-week groups, or to the play area in Chimes coffee shop. It doesn’t matter whether they’re in the Guinness Book of Records or not – all are special and loved by God. For more information about any of CSK activities, give our office a call on 01733 248236 or email office@hamptonchurch.co.uk Check out one of our Facebook pages (CSK Hampton Church or Chimes Coffee Shop or The Ark Hampton) to find out more. And if you have a marriage proposal on the 29th we’d love to hear all about it.

I joined the team back in October 2015, and there is still a great deal to learn. Observing first-hand the commitment, passion and knowledge of the Councillors and Clerk, has clearly made evident I have the best team around me to learn from. I live in Hampton Vale with my husband Michael and our 1-year-old son Jack. We love where we live and know this is the place we want our son to grow up, so when the Assistant Clerk role came up I jumped at the chance! Having a role where I can assist my local community alongside the Clerk, helping residents and Councillors to shape our new township into a strong, flourishing community, is a real honour. I am based in the office at Hampton Vale Community Centre, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s from 9am to 1pm, where residents are welcome to visit or call on 07562 388040, or email me on assistantclerk@hamptonpc.org.uk. So far, I have attended 3 full council meetings and have to admit to being surprised by the amount of agenda items and issues covered. Residents are of course, always welcome to come along and I’d highly recommend it. It’s been a real eye opener to see what goes on behind the scenes to keep Hampton running! One thing I’ve already been able to assist with, is the administrative support for both Hargate and Vale Allotment Gardens. Seeing the time and effort put in by the volunteer committees and plot holders, it’s been a pleasure helping things to run smoothly behind the scenes. The enjoyment the plot holders get from their gardens is clear and the produce is certainly impressive! If it’s something you have considered doing, you’re welcome to get in touch with me to arrange a tour. I’m also supporting the committee organising some wonderful community events, to celebrate the Queens 90th Birthday this year, you’ll get to hear more about that in the coming months. With 2016 now upon us, I am very much looking forward to what this year will bring for me, as part of Hampton Parish Council.

A little about me ... Birmingham was the start of my life journey. As a family we were rather nomadic, Kent, Yorkshire, South Wales to name but a few, returning back to Birmingham for my Law Degree. Sadly, the accent was lost on route! I moved to Hampton 15 years ago with my husband. We were not going to stay long but we liked the community and found ourselves putting down our roots, something of a novelty for me. Indeed, the size of the trees we planted in our garden all that time ago are testament to the depth of those roots. I have had an eclectic career, worked in a shop, behind a bar, in a stables, taught children to ride, I have looked after the horses of the owners of the larger company Stella Artois. I started my 19-year legal career as a criminal lawyer, moving on to become a Child and Family Solicitor. I have had eight-and-a-half-year involvement with Hampton College as either a member of staff, Governor or more latterly taking my services into the school. I am a mother, amateur artist, dabble with a bit of poetry writing and recently, I have been cast in Pygmalion to be shown at the Key theatre in the spring. I love a creative challenge! I am an avid learner, always curious, looking to continually develop and deepen my understanding. This life experience, passion and knowledge now forms the basis of my personal development coaching business; Harnessing Creativity. www.hccoaching.co.uk

Lost drone! The first Seniors meeting of 2016 went well, a lot of laughter and chatter about how we spent Christmas and New year, now we can start to make plans for our pamper day at Peterborough College , never disappointed, a great way to chill out. I have started thinking about spring and what to plant on our community allotment, the soil has been prepared with good fertiliser and I hope for bumper crops this year. All the produce we grow goes into CSK Church and is given away free to anyone who would like it. If you have any free time and would like to help on the allotment I would love to hear from you, it’s not all work, we have a shed equipped with camping stove for tea, coffee and biscuits. Dianne
I was recently flying my new drone, which has 4 wings and is black and yellow with a camera attached to the bottom. I lost control of the drone mid-flight in a gust of wind and I have not seen it since. If you have found it, please contact the Hampton Gazette at info@hamptongazette.co.uk Thank you. Thomas
We have now commenced our winter nets at the Nene Park Academy on Thursday evenings from 7 until 9. We are looking to start getting those bodies working again as the build up to a new season begins. The price will be around £4 per session, with plenty of opportunity for everyone to have a bat and a bowl, so come and join in, all standards welcome. We are hoping to build on our success from the 2015 season, so if you are interesting in helping the club out in any way, as a player or with more of a background role, please do get in touch, we would love to hear from you. SCHOOLS
Hampton College
The students and teachers are back to work and already moving at 100 miles per hour, in preparation for a new term. Lots of exciting lesson planning, clubs, trips and exam sessions are already in full swing. Recent student achievements include: • The Year 7 Basketball Team who won the Peterborough School Championships on Monday 11 January. They beat Nene Park Academy, Ormiston Bushfield Academy and The Peterborough School to qualify for the final and then beat Sir Harry Smith 16 - 2 in the final. • We are very proud that Vitor Balde in Year 11 has become the first player to graduate from Peterborough United’s Deaf Youth Team and sign on as a player in the First Team squad. Vitor has been training with Peterborough’s Deaf Youth Team for three years and is a veteran of many youth tournaments. The Year 9 football team are currently having fantastic success in the ESFA cup, reaching the last sixteen in this national competition. On Wednesday 13 January 2016, the team played Shenley Brook End School at Yaxley Football Club at 3.30pm. We will keep you updated on the results – good luck boys!

Hampton College Primary Phase Spotlight on Green Apples class - Reception
“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island” - Walt Disney
Hampton Hargate Primary School Here at Hampton Hargate we have been making the most of our fantastic outdoor learning space. We are pleased to say that our Forest School is regularly in use and the children have been taking advantage of the mild weather and carrying out some amazing learning opportunities. Miss Porter and Mrs Wilkinson (our Forest School Leaders) have been teaching the children all about making fires and the campfire has proved to be a very popular feature with the children who have been taking turns to toast yummy marshmallows! Our Year 2 students have even been making bread as part of their Fire Fire topic! As well as campfire learning, the forest area allowed our budding young artists to produce some very creative art installations using only the resources found outside. The children really enjoyed this activity and we certainly have some creative minds! Miss Porter said “We are very fortunate to have such a fantastic outdoor resource and it has certainly inspired the children with their learning”.

In reception we believe in the power of reading; the opening of the imagination is imperative amongst our youngest children hence our Spring term topic is ‘Will you read me a story?’. As Dr Seuss once said, “The more that you read, the more that you know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go” The children have been inspiring us to choose core texts this term based on their interest and enquiries. So far we have looked at the processes of melting and freezing whilst studying Frozen, the art and structure of a traditional tale through the Gingerbread Man and explored the learning based around making concoctions with Spider Sandwiches, to name just a few activities in our extremely busy setting. It has been fantastic to see the children so enthused to learn and excited to open old and new books. The children have enjoyed taking part in our Wicked Wednesdays; here the children have the opportunity to spend the day choosing their favourite recipe and making a shopping list before popping up to Tesco to purchase their ingredients. After lunch the children use their ingredients to make their recipe. The children have relished these opportunities to work over an extended period of time in a small group.
Hampton Tiddlers Hampton Tiddlers is now back in action after the holiday break. We started on 7 January 2016. Here are what parents say about us: Michelle, whose mum takes her son to our group, said about our story time session (the Hungry Caterpillar themed) , “ I hear the story was really good. Oscar was very excited to tell me about feeding the caterpillar (and that he had apple and strawberries for snack because that is clearly an essential part of the session too! X” Marie: “ Love my baby’s creations. We had a nice time, see you next week. X” On a rainy grey day, tiddlers made rain clouds. Sarah: “ It was so nice to turn up to a group where people talked to you and the mums weren’t s2ay on their phones while their children ran wild! Me and my daughter really enjoyed it. Thank you! “ Claire: “ How will we ever look at rain clouds in the same dull way again? So cheerful! It was lovely to see so many new faces and we look forward to seeing you all again soon.” Joanne: “ It was a wonderful first play for my daughter & myself. The volunteers and other mums made us feel very welcome. We are definitely making the Tiddlers a regular thing :) Thank you x”

Frost on the berries in Robins Wood, shimmering ice on Serpentine Lake or tell-tale paw prints on newly fallen snow, what does life in Hampton in winter mean for you? Whether you’re an amateur photographer or photography enthusiast, we’re looking for entrants to take some snaps covering different aspects of life in the Hamptons that best depict the community in winter. This is all about capturing a moment in time that reflects the beauty to be seen in the Hamptons during the coldest of the seasons. The judges’ favourite shots will be divided into two categories – adult and junior (16s and under) – and we have two Amazon Fire 7 tablets to give away. Entry is completely free and you can submit up to five photos accompanied by the entry form which can be found in the Latest News section of our website www.ohhampton.co.uk. You’ll find details of how to send in your entry on the form. The competition runs from 1 February – 21 March. In keeping with the competition theme, your pictures need to be taken within the Hamptons – the Parish Council area – which we’ll stretch to include Crown Lakes Country Park. If you take any pictures including people (seeing folk wrapped up warm in woolly hats and scarves would obviously lend well to the theme!), please make sure you seek their permission to feature in your shots before sending your photo/s in. We’re also hoping to use as many of your pictures as possible, with full credit given, to brighten up the photo galleries on our website and Flickr pages as well as the Hampton Gazette Facebook page – so by entering you will be giving us permission to do so. You can find the usual small print on the competition rules in the news section of our website www.ohhampton. co.uk. We look forward to seeing your wintery snaps soon! 20 20

FINANCIAL
MONEY MATTERS by Pete Bird, Bird & Laws Certified Public Accountants
Do you have any tax or business questions? If so email Pete Bird of Bird & Laws info@birdandlaws.co.uk and if of general interest we will publish them here.
Taxation Question: I have received two invoices for items I had purchased and one invoice charged me VAT on the postage, whilst the other did not. Should I have been charged VAT on the postage? Answer: It’s a common misapprehension that all post is exempt from VAT, but the position is more complicated than that and businesses should to be aware of the correct position. The basic position is that posting letters or parcels with the Royal Mail Group PLC (Post Office) is exempt from VAT, but that does not apply to businesses recharging those costs. Any other courier or delivery costs charged by delivery companies other than the Post Office are subject to VAT at the standard rate. Many businesses make a charge for delivery of goods and in many cases the delivery is undertaken by the Post Office and the costs incurred by the business are exempt from VAT. HMRC take the view that there are two separate supplies; the supply by the Post Office to the business which is exempt from VAT; and the supply of the delivered goods by the business to it’s customer. When a business is making a supply of delivered goods, they are making a single ‘composite supply’ and the liability of the postage charges follows that of the goods. You should therefore have been charged VAT on the postage by both of your purchases. Claiming back VAT on business trips: The rules for recovering VAT in expenses incurred on a business trip can be something of a minefield. Apart from not knowing whether or not VAT is recoverable, another common problem is knowing whether the costs have VAT on them to begin with. You can generally reclaim the VAT on travel and subsistence expenses where a director, partner, sole proprietor or employee is away from their normal place of work on a business trip. The business must pay for the actual cost or a proportion of the actual cost. You can’t reclaim VAT on expenses if you pay an employee a flat rate per day or night. However, if you pay for the exact cost of the expense and the employee keeps the invoice then you can reclaim the VAT.
Property Report Hampton This month we’d like to reflect on the successes of the last quarter of 2015. Many local families during this time took the opportunity to move up the property chain, having been previously denied this choice since 2008.
L
ocally, the agents in Peterborough were asked to advertise 149* properties in Hampton, agreeing 92 property sales from these instructions. The interesting thing is that 61% of the properties sold in Hampton in the last quarter of 2015 were 3 – 4 bedroom houses, showing the demand for family homes is continually growing. Going forward into 2016 we’re looking at what the future will bring in the property market nationally. Forecasts have been brought to our attention from a number of different sources, showing sale price rises ranging between 3 – 6% nationally. This was a welcome change to the growth rates seen between 2008 and 2014. This then creates an improved sellers market as we are currently seeing record low interest rates and an easing of available credit for buyers. So what does this mean if you are looking to sell your property in 2016? Once you’ve decided to sell your house, success isn’t guaranteed! How do you make sure that your property is 1 of the 2 sold in Hampton? How do you improve this statistic? How do you make sure your property is viewed by the right buyers in a competitive marketplace? Here at Tortoise Property, we have successfully introduced professional photography, video tours & targeted social media marketing into the marketplace. This has meant Tortoise has sold 3 in every 4 houses we brought to the market in 2015 while also achieving an average sale price of over 99% of all the properties we listed in 2015.. *statistics correct as of January 2016 **Statistics collated from Land Registry, Rightmove & The Sunday Times.

Keeping your pets happy in the winter When there’s a crisp, biting wind or the weather is cold and gloomy outside, it can be a daunting prospect to brave the elements and take your dog out for a walk, but wrap up warmly, the exercise will always be good for both you and your pet. Take your dog to wooded areas as this will protect you both from chilly gusts of wind and keep you sheltered if it decides to rain. Snow and ice can be painful for paws for many animals. Make sure when your pet has come in from the cold weather you wash and completely dry the paw especially if they been in contact with salt or a chemical de-icer. Petroleum jelly is a safe way to protect the paws or you can even invest in some dog or cat boots. Pets can be prone to dry flaky skin in the winter so make sure your pet drinks plenty of water. Try to bathe your pet less frequently and brush their coat regularly as this will help stimulate blood circulation and improve their skin overall. Pets will conserve energy to keep warm in the winter so will sleep more often than normal. Make sure you don’t overfeed them as you don’t want an overweight pet which could then potentially develop health problems. If it is really too cold outside to give your pet the usual amount of walks, provide some additional indoor exercise with a few extra games; such as tug of war, fetch, creating an obstacle course or even arrange a play date with another dog.
Want a romantic gift for your gardening Valentine? Forget the drooping daffs and jet-lagged lilies, flown halfway round the world and marked up to extortionate prices.
F
or a gardener a real romantic gesture is one that will last longer than a few days. Some gardeners actually dislike cut flowers, and most gardeners are eco-friendly, so when you think of all the paper, yards of cellophane, and air-miles clocked up by exotic blooms, a living plant suddenly seems like a better option. Potted plants are more suggestive of permanent affection than a bunch of flowers anyway, and on a purely practical level, they give much better value for money! Jasmine, stephanotis and gardenias are fragrant and glamorous, or try a passionflower vine, wound round a heart-shaped support. What could be more romantic than that? We think of red roses as being the bloom of romance so what better than an entire bush of them that promises years of pleasure ahead. One problem with rose bushes is that they are not at their best in February, and will most likely resemble a bunch of thorny twigs in a pot! But if your Valentine is a keen gardener I guarantee they will not mind. In fact they will enjoy the anticipation of the future blooms. Myrtle is another plant you might like to consider. It’s been associated with love since Roman times and is still used in wedding bouquets. With its neat glossy evergreen leaves and clusters of fragrant, fluffy white flowers followed by purple berries, Myrtis communis is a plant of quiet good taste. If planted in a sheltered spot it can eventually grow into a tree up to 5m tall. If you want to give a flower in bloom at the moment try a potted camellia, winter honeysuckle, violas, or an orchid. These plants are all associated with love and longing. If you simply must hand over a bunch of cut flowers, try to choose blooms grown in the mild climate of the Scilly Isles as environmentally-friendly alternatives to exotic species flown in from the other side of the globe. ‘Paperwhite’ narcissi are beautifully scented and available now.

HAMPTON WILDLIFE
Surviving the winter Lakota (Lover of Nature)
With temperatures being so warm this winter it is difficult to know, writing this in mid January, whether February will be its usual wintry self or whether the warmer weather will continue. Around Hampton this will obviously have a significant effect on our wildlife. If ice and snow descend then food for wild birds will be crucial. The placing of hanging feeders or food scattered on the icy ground will affect their chances of survival.
‘The February sunshine steeps your boughs and tints the buds and swells the leaves within.’ William C. Bryant
As the days gradually lengthen birdsong increases as males beginning to mark out their territories in preparation for the breeding season. At the beginning of February blackbirds will begin to sing their melodious song again but the full chorus is not heard until March, when spring evenings become alive with their music. You may also be fortunate to see or hear a woodpecker on the lakeside edges west of County Road. Some of the lakeside birds may also be starting their courtship. Particularly interesting is the courtship dance of the Great Crested Grebe which can be seen on Haddon Lake. Some have described it as a ‘ballet’. They shake their heads from side to side, occasionally turn to flick their back feathers with their bills, dive and return with greenery in their beaks. If the ground is free of snow then colour should be seen returning to the edges of paths in the form of green shoots of grass, nettles and clumps of cow parsley. Hazel catkins should also be able to be seen around the lakes. And snowdrops may well be seen in woodland areas; all very much signs of the coming spring and warmer weather. In the shallow parts of the lakes frogspawn should be seen as frogs move from their winter retreats, in pond mud, under piles of rotting leaves, logs or stones, to breeding areas. The males will croak to attract the females and then fertilise the eggs as the female lays them in shallow, still water. After about three weeks the tadpoles hatch and then after twelve weeks they look like miniature frogs and are ready to leave the water. Life in Hampton is stirring once again.
