Firstly, I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the advertisers, contributors and readers who have supported us throughout 2018, without you the magazine would not be possible. A special ‘thank you’ goes to Stewart Howe and Sally Howell, who have both been a constant support over the last few years. Stewart is also responsible for the History column and I do hope you like what he has put together for this issue on pages 16 and 17. As it’s the New Year I am sure, like me, you have many things you would like to achieve in 2019; one of my main goals is to ‘pay it forward’. Pay it forward is an expression for describing the beneficiary of a good deed repaying it to others instead of to the original benefactor. The concept is old, but the phrase may have been coined by Lily Hardy Hammond in her 1916 book in the Gardens of Delight. If everyone did this I am positive it would make a difference. Don’t forget to check out the Yaxley Gazette Facebook group which has lots of news that happens in the area and is a great way to discuss local topics. Our community is really thriving and it’s great to be a part of it, but please remember to support local businesses and shop local. And always let us know if you are investing in this area, it would be great to hear your story. Happy New Year!

MEN UNITED IN SONG 2019
SUPPORTING PROSTATE CANCER UK New Year, new you? Looking for a fresh challenge, new skills and a great social scene to boot? Then look no further…
It is a very rewarding opportunity whilst raising vital awareness and funds for the continuing fight against prostate cancer.
F
ollowing its phenomenal success over the last few years, Men United in Song is back for 2019, once again raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. Launching in March, the project will sign up a minimum of 40 local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none) to rehearse over 10 weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset Theatre on Saturday 11 May. To date the project has engaged hundreds of local men, raising many thousands of pounds for the charity, as well as inspiring similar projects across the country – a fantastic result! John, from Moulton Chapel, says “I was looking for something new to do and Men United in Song seemed like a great way of meeting new people and supporting a good cause. I wasn’t sure what to expect and it was quite a steep learning curve! I didn’t realise before that not everyone in a choir sang all the same thing together, there are harmonies too, and when it all comes together it sounds absolutely amazing! The whole experience was fantastic and performing in the concert was the icing on the cake!” “Having seen Men United in Song advertised in previous years and been tempted to get involved, I finally got the impetus to go for it when my father was diagnosed” says Martin from Bourne. “Although the idea initially filled me with some trepidation, the experience proved to be extremely enjoyable and fulfilling. It’s a very rewarding opportunity whilst raising vital awareness and funds for the continuing fight against prostate cancer.” “I wanted to improve my singing and Men United in Song
seemed like a great opportunity!” says Adam from Thorney. “Turning up for the first rehearsal was daunting, but I immediately felt comfortable singing in such a relaxed environment. The highlight for me was knowing that we were creating something amazing for such a great cause. I’ve met all sorts of people, from farmers to accountants to new dads - without this project we would never have had the chance to meet and discover how we can really sing. I would highly recommend the experience!” Men United In Song is not all about the singing, or even about the fundraising, there’s a fantastic social scene, too! Ultimately, it’s about a group of men getting together in a shared enterprise, which of course is the idea behind Prostate Cancer UK’s Men United campaign, and why the charity seemed such a good fit for the project. William Prideaux, director of Men United in Song, says “Year on year, we see men of all ages from all different walks of life get stuck into this project and give it their all, producing fantastic results over a relatively short period of time both in terms of the progress they make and the sound they produce in the final concert and in terms of raising money for this very important charity. It’s always a pleasure and a privilege to work with them.” Men United In Song kicks off with introduction sessions on 27 and 28 February and 2 March at the John Mansfield Campus in Peterborough. Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, just a willingness to get involved and give it your best shot! “We’re not looking for 100 percent in musicality, but 100 percent in enthusiasm” says William. “Why not give it a go, it just might be the best thing you’ve done in a very long time!”

Holme and Yaxley Guides and Rangers By Janice Osborn, District Commissioner , Girlguiding Yaxley District
All sections in Guiding have been very busy. There was a good turnout for the Remembrance parade and the Rainbows showed off their new flags. When you read this the Christmas party will have been and gone – always a great event, thank you to those who organise it.
Yaxley’s Royal British Legion raises over £29,000 Together we have raised a massive £29,506.51! Yaxley & District Branch Royal British Legion would like to sincerely thank all of the local businesses/organisations, public service personnel, veterans, volunteers and the whole community who made this year’s Poppy Appeal and Remembrance Day Celebrations such a huge success. Yaxley truly is a great place to live; what a great honour it is to work alongside so many fantastic people to help raise much-needed funds for this amazing charity. All money raised provides financial, social and emotional support to veterans and serving members of the Armed Forces. We would like to personally thank Corporal Billy Gray who is
a member of Yaxley Detachment Cambridgeshire AFC. He was Yaxley’s youngest member to attend both the memorial services. At 6.30am, he marched alongside other cadets during the Remembrance parade and at 2.15pm he helped to man the Poppy Appeal Table at Morrisons. What a bright future this village has with such dedication from the younger generation. The Yaxley & District Branch RBL meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month at The Yaxley RBL Social Club 210 Broadway Yaxley PE7 3NR, at 8pm and welcomes new members.
I am more than happy to chat to anyone about getting involved in Guiding, or if you register on the website we will get in touch with you. For more information call 01487 831451 or email janiceo.girlguiding@gmail.com

At Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, we are encouraging people to make four New Year’s Resolutions for 2019 to keep your families and homes safe from fire. • Make sure you have a correctly fitted working smoke alarm on every floor of your house and test it weekly – involve the children in this to ensure they are aware of what the smoke alarm does, what the alarm sounds like and what it means if it goes off; • Check older relatives and friends have a working smoke alarm and test theirs regularly – you may support older relatives and friends
with transport and shopping but may overlook the crucial role of a smoke alarm. We can provide testing sticks to help older, less mobile people test their alarms without overreaching or potentially hurting themselves; • We also offer Safe and Well visits to those that are eligible which covers a far wider range of areas than just fire safety. Find out if you are eligible for a Safe and Well visit by contacting us on: 0800 917 9994. • Escape Plan: Make a fire escape plan so you and all of those in your home know what to do in case a fire breaks out in the home.

HOLME WI Deck the Halls
Alison McGuinness President
So, as our WI year draws to a close, we were busy making a Christmas wreath using strips of cloth tied on to a wreath ring. Our very own member Caz was our instructor, along with her colleagues Jane and Sue, to assist and advise. It is much easier than we thought and by the end of our evening we had a varied abundance of wreaths in all colours and designs, which were then all entered and judged in our competition. Alison Turner won the Dorothy Ayres Competition Cup, with the most points scored throughout the year. We do need to get cracking next year and try and keep up with her. Our Knit and Natter group has been busy again, with 50 woolly hats going to the Sailors Society, jumpers to Chernobyl and blankets to the YMCA. In the new year we will be collecting for the YMCA’s Period Poverty campaign, to provide sanitary
items for women who cannot afford them in the Peterborough area. We do not meet again until February, but we do meet up in January for an informal meal. We will then be starting in February with Helicopter Rescue and a competition called ‘In Flight’, using your imagination to photograph ‘something’ in the air. Wishing everyone a very peaceful Christmas. Please remember, if anyone is interested in joining please do come along and see what we are about and what we get up to. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm. All ladies will receive a warm and friendly welcome.

We have been really busy and currently have 14 ongoing enquiries regarding new defibrillators. We are very proud to be supporting Heritage Park Primary School in Park Farm, fundraising for a public defibrillator. We held a stall at their Christmas bazaar which raised £60.50. I am amazed how much the children knew about CPR.
Gemma’s Hearts have also been working with Manager, Jackie, at a warden controlled residential home in Paston and the residents have managed to fund a public defibrillator, so watch this space. We hope you all had a lovely Christmas would like to wish you all a very happy new year.

It’s that time of year where we are thinking about our new year resolutions; maybe giving up smoking, drinking, chocolate or shopping. These things all focus on giving up something but we can also focus on becoming part of something and in turn helping others. St. Peter’s Church in partnership with Deafblind Enablement run a monthly informal group, named Impaired Senses, for anyone with sensory loss, which we would like to invite you to. There’s two ways to take part and join in the fun: If you, or anyone you know is finding it harder to see or hear and would like to join a friendly group for games, raffle, fellowship and refreshments, then please come along and meet us. Alternatively, you could become a volunteer and join the team from St. Peter’s who provide this community group for the village and surrounding area. The group takes place at St B’s Hall, Main Street, Yaxley, PE7 3LZ on the 3rd Saturday of the month, 2-4pm and is free to join. Our next meeting is Saturday 19 January. We would love to meet more people and with enough volunteers we are able to assist in transport needs, just let us know your requirements. We even have a summer trip to the seaside for fish and chips! For more information on the group please contact Debbie on 01733 686969 or email debbie@deafblindenablement.co.uk In addition to this group, we work in partnership with Cambs Deaf Church to provide a Signed Service on the 4th Sunday of the month. We are blessed to have two people attend who sign, and can offer both BSL and SSE. Our next Signed Service is Sunday 27 January 11am. May the year ahead hold many blessings for you. God Bless, St. Peter’s Church www.saintpeters.co.uk
Our congregation wish you all a Happy and Peaceful New Year. In December we held a poster competition at Yaxley Infants School. As part of their homework the pupils were asked to design a poster about Christmas. These were then put on display in the Chapel at our Coffee morning and all those attending were asked to vote for the best three. There were prizes for first, second and third. As well as being awarded a prize the best poster was displayed on our Notice board outside of the Chapel over the Christmas period. The response from the children was overwhelming with 80 students submitting their pieces of art. How wonderfully talented and imaginative these children are. The results of the competition are on our Facebook page @yaxleymc. Our popular Coffee Morning will be on January 12 starting at 10 am. Come in from the cold and enjoy some delicious homemade cakes, a hot drink and good company. Sunday Services start at 10.30am every week. Come and join us. Minister: Reverend Gareth Baron (01733 314147). Email: yaxleymc@gmail.com @yaxleymc
40 days In my house we leave at least one of the Christmas decorations up until the beginning of February. Right and proper I say. So many things in the churches year have 40 days in them. 40 days in Lent. 40 days between Easter and Ascension Day. So why not 40 days between Christmas and Candlemas. Yes Candlemas on 2 February is the turning point from looking back to the birth of the Baby Jesus to looking forward to Good Friday and Easter. So you see it truly is the end of the Christmas season not 12th night as we assume. That is the Feast of Epiphany, the arrival of the 3 Wise Men but Christmas goes on. If you held a party to celebrate 12th Night, how about joining one of the churches who hold a Candlemas Service on [ or near ] 2 February. One such candlelit service will be held in St Giles Church, Holme at 4 pm on Sunday 3 February. Everyone is welcome. We would love you to join us. With the outdoor season finished, some of our bowlers move indoors. There are several varieties of indoor bowls; the indoor rinks at Whittlesey, Peterborough and Stamford are a direct indoor version of the outdoor game, but some of our members play carpet bowls, in village halls in and around Peterborough and others play short-mat bowls. Whatever your game, good luck to all our players for the winter season. Our AGM saw the resignation of two of our long-standing club officers. Kathy Browning our secretary and Norman Hill our grounds-man. We like to thank them both for the hard work and commitment they have given our club over many years. Without members like Kathy and Norman, volunteering their time and skills a club like would not be able to exist.
Getting a permanent electricity connection to the clubhouse has been more difficult than we thought, with all of the planning, authorizations and paperwork to get through, but hopefully, we will soon be connected. Throughout the winter, members keep in touch through the activities of our fund-raising committee who put on race nights, quizzes, beetle drives and an Xmas bazaar etc. Yaxley were well represented at the Peterborough and District League presentation night, with four teams winning trophies, in cup and league. The picture is of our Yaxley Seals team receiving their award for winning League one and thus gaining promotion to the Premiership for the 2019 season.
Player of the month for October was Joe Walker, Yaxley U10 Juniors.
U10s Congratulations this week goes to Yaxley Black and Blue who topped their respective groups in the Medal competition. Both teams won 4 games and drew 1 with a goal difference of +20 so a fantastic achievement. Looking forward to hearing more success for Yaxley FC in the coming months and the fantastic development of the youth teams.

POWER OF ATTORNEY IS AS ESSENTIAL AS CAR INSURANCE . Some facts.. Why do you need a Power of Attorney? • More of us become unable to manage our affairs these days, without a Power of Attorney your family may need to go to Court. This can cause lots of hassle, delay and expense.
What happens if there is no Power of Attorney? • The courts may appoint someone to manage your financial affairs, without your consent. • Your friends or family may need to go to court to get authority to act on your behalf – this can be a lengthy, costly & upsetting experience. • Doctors could rule loved ones on decisions you have already made regarding health matters. • By setting up a Power of Attorney now, you make things easier for your loved ones in the future, whilst keeping control of your affairs now.
Why should you use Roc & Co Estate Planning? • We prepare thousands of Powers of Attorney each year in the UK, and make it easier for you. • We will prepare your Power of Attorney and we can register them for you as well. • Over 50% of clients are referred and go on to use us for other services. • We will come to you and explain in simple and understandable terms about Lasting Power of Attorneys.

St B’s Hall: Yaxley’s Jewel There's a jewel in Yaxley's crown that is growing in popularity with people looking for a venue to host a party, club or exercise class.
S
ome villagers may not have heard of St B's Hall on Main Street Yaxley, but in the past year James and Vicky Leschallas have been working hard to turn it into a thriving hub for the community. James and Vicky will soon become owners of the hall and want to make people aware of its availability for hire. Vicky said: “We love St.B’s, it's such a pretty hall with such charm and character. I first came across it five years ago when I started using it for my Pilates classes. It's a lovely venue
so please get in touch if you'd like to find out more. In the past year it's hosted children's parties, baby showers, Christenings, birthday parties, exercises classes, company training days, you name it." The main hall is approximately 8 metres square with a solid oak floor and a carpeted upstairs meeting room of about half that size. There's a modern kitchen and large disabled toilet. The hall offers space, chairs and tables for 60 people and rental from just £12 per hour.
In addition, James and Vicky offer a number of party options including hire of their disco bouncy castle or giant inflatable ball pool. They also have a great disco lights and speaker set up complete with disco ball. Food can also be arranged via Occasions Catering in Yaxley. With three hours hire and disco bouncy castle from £86 or three hours hire and disco setup from £61, it’s very reasonable.

LITTLE ACORNS Firstly, on behalf of us all at Little Acorns, we wish you a very Happy New Year. Welcome to the new families joining us over the next term.
YAXLEY INFANTS Lottery funding success for new early years’ outdoor resources. We were excited this term when we received the good news that our school had been successful in applying to the National Lottery for a grant. The project application had a strong focus on children’s emotional wellbeing which, as a school, we place at the heart of everything we do. Over the last term we have had to be very patient awaiting the result and in early November received the good news. Yaxley Infant school has been awarded almost £10,000 to spend on outdoor resources! Outdoor learning is essential for all children’s learning, development and wellbeing. Given the current financial climate, we would not have been able to afford this. We will keep you posted on the developments. Last term saw the beginning of our new celebration assembly format. In previous years the school have had “Praise” assemblies every Friday which were open to all the parents. This academic year we have taken a different approach and now have an end of half term “Celebration
We would say to say a big ‘well done’ to the preschool for their fantastic performance in the Christmas nativity play. We are very proud of you all! The children have been busy exploring messy play. They have especially enjoyed painting and playing with shaving foam. Assembly”. Teachers secretly choose children for different awards (linked to our golden promises) and the parents were invited to attend the assembly. It is a wonderful way to share and celebrate our children’s achievements. Year 1 children put on three shows over the Christmas period. “A Cock a Doodle Christmas” was packed out as the children told the story of the nativity from the point of view of the animals. All the children worked incredibly hard as did the adults in the school to put on the performances. We look forward to Reception putting on our next show at Easter.
If you are a prospective parent and would like to visit our school, please call the school on 01733 240918 or email office@yaxley.cambs.sch.uk We look forward to meeting you.
We are currently taking bookings for September 2019 and also into 2020! If you would like to come and have a look around and are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or littleacorns.daynursery@yahoo.co.uk
WILLIAM DE YAXLEY Our 'Friends of William de Yaxley' (FOWDY) committee have been particularly busy organising a number of festive events at the school. On Friday 30 November we had our annual Christmas Fayre, where we welcomed a number of local trade stalls, some pocket money games created by our classes and our fabulous school choir kick-started the evening singing songs around the Christmas tree. A huge thanks to everyone who attended, we hope you all had fun. Funds raised as a result of this and other events organised by the
FOWDY team go towards providing extra-curricular and enrichment activities and equipment that would not normally be covered by the school budget. We are in discussion with FOWDY with a view to updating our audio equipment within the school. Their next scheduled event will be our popular Christmas Film night for those children attending the school.

FARCET C OF E PRIMARY We are always looking for opportunities to enrich our curriculum and this month there have been some great educational visits and visitors to the school. As part of their topic 'A child's war', years 5 and 6 visited Duxford Imperial War Museum. Everyone had a great time and found out many interesting facts. They were very surprised to learn that small trailers, motorbikes and jeeps were dropped from planes (with parachutes) in order the help the Allies fight the Nazis. The children particularly enjoyed seeing the variety of aircraft close up, learning about what life was like in the trenches and finding out how heavy the weapons used in World War 2 were. They were amazed at how the soldiers could carry their packs and their weapons! This half term, years 3 and 4 visited Wicksteed Park as part of their topic 'Mighty Metals'. The children explored the different forces that act on a roller coaster and then had a go at designing and making their own model roller coasters. Throughout

the day, a number of scientific experiments were conducted by the children looking at how energy is converted and it's uses within the park. They explored the best angle for a slide to be at to ensure it is both safe and enjoyable. They also looked at the materials the rides are made from to produce the least amount of friction. The children all thoroughly enjoyed the day. At the end of November, our KS2 classes were very lucky to have a visit from CEES Stibbington Centre. During the visit, children learnt about the importance of renewable energy. They found out how renewable energy is generated and the benefits it can provide. The children also carried out a scientific experiment to find out how many blades on a wind turbine produce the most energy. They enjoyed using the equipment to build their own model wind turbines.
Community Education? At the start of a New Year, many of us take time out to think about what we want to do, achieve and experience during the year ahead. Our school is no different. For us, one of the key themes which will run throughout 2019, is reinforcing the importance of our local community, and the things we individually can do within it. One way we do this is by encouraging and celebrating the activities the children take part in outside of the school day. Every Friday, we hold a ‘Celebration Assembly’ in school, where the

children bring in their certificates, badges, rosettes, medals and trophies, and tell us about the ways they have been busy and been successful. In addition to this, we are proud to be part of the Children’s University programme. This is a national scheme which counts and rewards the ‘hours of learning’ children put in to activities outside of their classroom. In our school, we currently have 42 children signed up to the scheme, doing activities like sailing, Brownies and Rainbows,
swimming, visiting historical sites and libraries, karate, dancing and many many more. As their hours accumulate, the children will ‘graduate’ at various levels within the University, indicating their continued commitment to learning. Since joining the programme, our children have added up more than 2,030 hours of learning outside school. We are so proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing them progress further still as we go through the year ahead.
Whichever option you choose, you will get the same dedicated, professional, sympathetic and efficient service.

HAPPY NEW YEAR… by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
We hope that 2019 proves to be a prosperous one, presenting opportunities to build your business interests and improve your financial position. We are currently working hard to ensure all of our clients meet the 31 January tax return filing deadline. If you still need to let us have the information to complete yours, then please consider this to be a gentle nudge.
Up and coming over the next couple of months: Individuals might like to: Consider whether they want/are able to make pension contributions in the current tax year. We would encourage you to speak to your financial advisor early if this applies to you. Consider if you have fully utilised your tax allowances for 2018-19? For example, your personal tax allowance £11,850; the capital gains tax exempt amount £11,700; and inheritance tax tax-free gifts allowances. Have you taken advantage of the £20,000 ISA limit?
Giving local small businesses the opportunity to rent a shelf to display their products. Also available - Children’s party packages & Crafter mornings
Companies/businesses need to: Consider how to deal with your obligations, if any, to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Consider the timing of any capital expenditure, perhaps accelerating it into the current accounting year to bring forward the tax benefit of capital allowances. Making VAT Digital (MVD) what you need to: Have you made arrangements to prepare your bookkeeping records digitally, so that you can still submit your VAT returns under the new rules that are mandatory from 1 April 2019? If not, then please speak to your accountants or we can help and advise you? If you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest, we will publish them here.

January Gardening Tips Start to plan ahead by looking at seeds and garden designs for inspiration... what else can you do in January?! If you are lucky enough to have workable ground you can still plant bare root trees, fruit bushes and hedges at this time of year.
Fruit and Vegetables
Your vegetable plot may be looking a little bare at the moment. Fill it with winter vegetables. It's time to sow salad leaves, bulb onions, sprouting seeds to start growing those greenhouse tomatoes.
Maintenance
The weather may be cold outside and deterring you from pruning your garden. Don't panic, you can hold off for a week or two but winter pruning needs to be done before the first signs of spring.
January is a great month to prune most deciduous trees and shrubs. Fruit trees can be pruned at this time but be careful not to prune spring flowering plants.
Protection
Keep protecting your plants from wind rock and keep those pots and containers wrapped up. Remember your garden furniture is also at risk in the cold months; polythene sheeting is great to cover your furniture with to stop the damp and possible rust. Birds are at risk at this time of year; remember to replenish water for them throughout the winter. Make gardening fun in January!
White January January is a month of white, snowdrop white even if there is no snow. Originally snowdrops were a joyful sight for the early year but now they have become an important source of food for our bees that are so often active due to the weather often rising above five celsius. It is also the time to spread out snowdrop clumps as movement in the green is by far the best way to expand their range as long as the ground is not frozen solid that is. Dragonfly and other larvae will now be resting at the bottom of ponds hoping to escape a solid freeze whilst worms and slugs have tunnelled deep into the soil well below the frost line. But if you dig around in warmer damper parts or raise a slab you are likely to find other bugs
sheltering: snails sealed in their shells, woodlice, centipedes and millipedes slow but active and even ground beetles sheltering to keep warm though of course the beetles and centipedes will also be looking to potentially snack on the other invertebrates as they seek suitable plant matter to keep them going. And when the white fades to the promised yellow of aconite and crocus the garden will truly come to life but that is a tale for February.

For those suffering from fatigue issues, CBD offers a surge in energy. One of the key things Hapi Hemp customers say is that their energy has improved.
Benefits
Promotes circulatory health and improves fatigue.
Frequently asked questions Can I overdose on CBD? No. It has no known toxicity levels and is incapable to overdose. Is it addictive? No. It is no more addictive than any other therapeutic products and vitamins. Will it make me high? No. It’s non-psychoactive. CBD is made from industrial hemp, a strain that is different to the plant that is used in cannabis. How do I know its safe? Make sure you buy from a reputable retailer, ask for lab reports, check and see if they are members of the CTA and find out where the product is originally from. So much comes in from China where they have no certifications and products are tested on animals. All Hapi Hemp products are certified and we can provide lab reports, we are also members of the CTA. Is CBD the same as marijuana? No. It is a different strain of plant to the cannabis plant that is used in marijuana. Are there any side effects? No. Most people do not experience any side effects from Hapi Hemp products. We always recommend people start slowly in the first few days.
Hapi Hemp will be offering a range of CBD oils, teas, chocolate and skincare. For more info join our Hapi Hemp group on Facebook and follow us on Instagram. Our website will be launching soon!

Hair saviours
cheektochic
Now that winter has officially arrived, the only reminder of your summer holiday, apart from your photographs, is probably your hair Bleached from long days out in the sunshine, and dry to the bone thanks to the large daily doses of chlorine, now is the time to get those tresses looking their best and feeling ‘worth it’ once again. Whether you need a little inspiration for your next salon visit, or you prefer to ‘do it yourself’ at home, we’ve got the hair saviours to rescue you.
Go coconuts!
There’s nothing you can’t do with coconut oil, but as well as making your cooking healthy it can also make your hair healthier too. As coconut oil is made up of smaller, medium-chain fatty acids, it penetrates hair deeply and quickly. Applied at the very ends in oil form to wet hair, it can be an incredible leave-in conditioner for ends that have seen better days.
Alternatively, mix with honey and apple cider for a hair mask that will leave hair well-nourished and super shiny.
Inside out
Winter is a time for indulgence, but as our appetites crave the carbs and sweet stuff, our diets can begin to affect our skin, hair and nails, and whilst we ensure that we eat our fruit and veg in the run-up to that summer holiday, the simple fact is that they don’t look as tempting on cold winter days. So, work from the inside out and stock up on your essential vitamins and minerals that can also improve hair and nail conditions, snack on raw nuts and eat plenty of fish that is high in protein.
Happy hair days!

PREP SCHOOL FOR PUPPIES
pawsforthought
Did you know that the first few weeks of a puppy’s life are crucial to helping them become happy, well-adjusted members of the family?
G
ood breeders start socialising their puppies from birth, and this should be continued by new owners from the moment they bring their puppy home. Dogs Trust Dog School supports owners to help their puppies learn to enjoy the world, feeling confident and relaxed no matter what they encounter. It is vital that owners ensure their new puppies are exposed to a range of social situations - meeting people and other dogs, being handled, visiting new places - in a happy, enjoyable way. Always pair new experiences with pleasant things like treats and games so puppies won’t feel worried about these situations when they’re older. New puppies should also be exposed to a range of noises in a gradual and always enjoyable way so that they don’t
develop phobias like firework fear later in life. At Dog School training classes, noises are presented at such low volumes that puppies do not respond negatively, with volumes gradually increasing throughout progressive sessions. For more ways to make life for you and your dog a walk in the park, visit Dogs Trust Dog School. This national network of experienced trainers provides fun, educational courses for all dog owners. Based on up-to-date scientific research, our trainers use only rewardbased training methods to help you enhance the bond between you and your dog. Small classes of six dogs and two trainers mean you get the one-onone time you need to learn effectively and most importantly, have fun! Courses are five weeks long, with a free introductory session.
To find your nearest classes visit dogstrustdogschool.org.uk and take your first step to making the most of your relationship with your four-legged friend now.
The cat’s whiskers!
International Cat Day is an annual celebration of one of the world’s favourite animals. As a card-carrying dog-lover I admit I didn’t know much about our feline friends so I was fascinated to unearth some cool cat-facts! Sarah Davey Cats are believed to have been domesticated in ancient Egypt.
Cats only sweat through their paws.
Cats sleep for two-thirds of their lives. They usually spend 13-16 hours of the day asleep. (I am definitely coming back as a cat!)
A cat has the ability to jump up to six times its length.
Adult cats ‘miaow’ to communicate with humans rather than each other. Cats use their whiskers as sensors to find out how wide a space is – and whether they can fit through it. A cat’s heart beats two to three times faster than a human’s. A cat’s tongue has rows of hooked scales that act like a comb to groom its fur.
A group of cats is called a clowder.
Cats can detect higher frequencies of sound than dogs or humans. Cats have powerful, tightly controlled muscles and fast reflexes that allow them to move quickly – they skilled at stalking, running, jumping and climbing. Cats can see at one-sixth the light level required for human vision. Cats are believed to have been domesticated in ancient Egypt. Domestic cats purr at a frequency of 20 to 30 vibrations per second.

If like many people you choose to hit the High Street straight after Christmas for your seasonal spend up – then don’t let the pick pockets spoil your festive bargain hunting fun. While you may be armed with a post-Christmas shopping wishlist, you can guarantee that the pick pockets and purse dippers will be out in force to cause heartache and misery. According to last year’s police statistics across a number of UK cities, the 27th December is when shoppers are traditionally out in force after Boxing Day and is the most popular day for thieves to strike. In Birmingham alone, £20,000 worth of valuables were taken by pickpockets during the festive season, while in Cardiff that figure was £27,000.
As you would suspect, phones – in particular expensive ones – were top of the list, credit and debit cards were next, followed by purses, wallets, handbags and jewellery. It’s so easy when we are busy and in a rush not to zip up bags or put phones away properly, but it is so very important to be extra vigilant and careful at this time of year, especially in crowded shops and whilst in queues. Remember, pickpockets are very skilled at what they do. They know all the tricks and are extremely light-fingered with most of their thefts only taking a second or two.
DO
DO NOT
keep purses and bags closed and secure at all times conceal your wallet in a buttoned or zipped pocket where it doesn’t bulge carry bags in front of you or diagonally across your chest return cards to your purse or wallet quickly and zip it up or button it use a money belt if you’re carrying a significant quantity of cash keep your valuables out of sight keep a list, separate from your wallet and phone, of contact numbers of family in case your phone is stolen
place your mobile phone or wallet in your back pocket hang your bag or any items on the back of a chair leave anything on the back of a pushchair place your belongings out of sight on the floor including shopping bags show your money - keep it safely in your pocket and when using the ATM, always ensure that your money has been secured in your purse or wallet before turning away
Wishing you a very Happy New Year and please keep your valuables safe with the above advice.
