As you will be aware we have already started our Flu Clinics for this year which have been strictly by invitation only. This is due to there being two different vaccines this year for adults. FLUAD vaccine for patients aged 65 and over and Quadrivalent vaccine is for patients aged between 18 and 64. Our next scheduled Saturday Flu Clinics will be on the following dates:27 October

The Library Presents “No Petticoats Here” Commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War while enjoying this beautiful moving show. Poppy Appeal This year's Poppy Appeal was launched on Friday 26 October with poppy pins and merchandise available in all of the Yaxley shops and businesses. This year, to celebrate the Centenary, we have a few extra services and activities happening over the remembrance weekend.

Foot Stompin’ Soul Night Sat 10 Nov 7.30pm – 12am Yaxley Royal British Legion Social Club in the hall.

DJs- Paul D, Julian, Ollie will be entertaining us with music from Motown, Stax, Atlantic, Decca, Immediate, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Temptations, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Small Faces. There will be a raffle and a poppy appeal merchandise table on display. Admission cost £5 on the door, supporting the Royal British Legion poppy appeal event.

Special Memorial Service

Sun 11 Nov 6.30am The War Memorial, Yaxley Cemetery Held 100 years on from the exact time World War 1 ended, followed by hot refreshments and bacon/sausage baps to warm yourself up at the Yaxley RBL Social Club.

Gemma’s Hearts We have lots going on at the moment, including support and fundraising for a 24hr public defibrillator for a residential property in Ramsey Heights and a nursing home in Paston which should have their defibrillator in the next month. In the last year we have been working with the police to put a defibrillator at the decommissioned Hampton Police Station and are very pleased to announce that this defibrillator has now been installed and is rescue-ready. A really big ‘thank you’ to Lewiss at Turner Electrical Services, who worked free of charge. In August we held a free CPR & defibrillator awareness session. ‘Thank you’ to everyone who came. We had a really good turnout. Also, a really big ‘thank you’ to Libby at Elastoclass First-aid Training for running this free of charge and ‘thank you’ to The Farmers for giving the room to us free of charge.

We had the pleasure of going to support Sue & Mike Windle whom were fundraising at D&A Sanders pet shop Yaxley fundraising for the East Anglian Air Ambulance, they did very well over £1000. I went to meet Parkside FC U12’s & watch their game, Parkside FC are very kindly supporting us & have had our logo put onto the arms of their kits. We had a brilliant time, it was lovely to meet the team & the parents. We really do have a fantastic team of volunteers & are very grateful for donations & support you have shown us.

Remembrance Day Parade

Sun11 Nov 2.15- 6pm Yaxley RBL Social Cub

Yaxley remembrance day parade will step off from the Yaxley RBL Social Cub and will parade to the Yaxley War Memorial for a wreath laying ceremony, then on to a special memorial service at St Peter’s Church at 3pm. After the service we will parade back to the RBL Social club where refreshments will be provided along with Live music performed by 1940s style singer Rachel Bea. Sophisticut’s celebrations raise £755 for charity Sophisticut had 2 celebrations to look forward to this year, 45 years of trading in Yaxley and salon owner and founder Cynthia turned 70, hard to believe as she looks amazing. Cynthia celebrated her birthday and the Salon’s birthday at the British Legion where they had some talented entertainment, and I hear most of Sophisticut’s clients and friends danced until midnight. The night also raised £755 which they are donating to the Welcome Club the Age Well in Yaxley and Gemma’s Hearts.

Fundraiser for East Anglian Air Ambulance Held on Saturday 6 October Sue Windle

I would like to thank all the companies who donated raffle prizes for this very worthwhile charity. Thanks are also due to Christine and Tony Hall for help on this wet and cold day. Thanks go also to David Sanders who allowed our stall to be positioned outside his shop and to Tammy Swiderski, Community fund raiser EAAA, who drew the raffle. Finally I should to extend a special thanks to all who bought tickets for my raffle and bought items from my gift stall. All items that remained unsold have gone to East Anglian Air Ambulance to help with future fund raising events. The total raised by this event was £1,003.55 which will help the work of this very worthwhile cause. Once again, a big ‘thank you’ to you all.

Brownies

The District is having a bit of a crisis; the Tuesday Brownies has had to close because there were not enough girls available on a Tuesday to maintain a viable unit - yet the Monday Unit had a long waiting list. Conversely, we had a leader shortage on a Monday. Therefore, we have combined the two units and now have thriving Brownie groups on Mondays and Thursdays. We are still struggling for Brownie leaders on a Monday as a couple of the Assistants are likely to be moving away soon and the Unit leader needs some time off in the spring, so if you can help then please get in touch. Perhaps you used to be a Brown Owl in another life and now have the time to come back? Ideally I would like to put a Deputy Unit Leader in place very soon to carry the unit over the next year or so until our lovely ‘New Mummy Owl’ is back. Job sharing is something which could be appropriate here. The Thursday Brownies held a coffee evening for McMillan and raised almost £80. Well done girls and leaders!

Rainbows

Two Rainbow leaders made their promise to me, the District Commissioner, on Monday 8 October. The two new Rainbow parade flags had their first airing. Welcome to Skye and Wendy.

Guides

The tow Yaxley Guide Units are pretty full and could both do with more leaders so anyone willing to take on an assistant or helper role would be more than welcome. They meet Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7.30pm. Holme

Guides can take more girls – It’s not that far down to Holme (when the road is open!) - if any Yaxley/ surrounding villages’ girls would like to try a smaller Unit please get in touch, we can try and sort out lift sharing.

Rangers

The Rangers have recovered after their eventful trip to Cornwall and to Wellies and Wristbands in Hampshire. After such a glorious summer they managed to pick the wet weeks for both. Doh! They are now preparing for a winter camp ‘Sparkle and Ice’ ... (rather them than me!) Holme Guides and Rangers held a cake and preserves stall at the Life on the Holme Front weekend to fundraise. Vicki from the Rangers gave a wonderful presentation of her trip to Ghana with Girlguiding. She spent time teaching children in a school and plastering the walls of another school, as well as experiencing the home life of volunteer hosts. She said that it was the best time of her life so far and she has come home truly inspired. We are very proud of her, not least for raising most the cost of the trip herself! You can find out more on the website www.girlguiding.org where there is a link to the registration site for girls to join at any age from 5 to 18, and also for adults to volunteer for whatever you have time for. You don’t need experience of Guiding, although it helps. A smile and a responsible attitude is all that’s required. Training/DBS check is free!

Let’s all hibernate during winter! I play a game with my children some evenings while we’re getting ready for bed – we call it ‘the favourites game’. It’s fairly simple; someone asks ‘what’s your favourite xxxx’ and the others have to answer.

e’ve covered all the basics so far, and we all know each other’s favourite colour, favourite dinner, favourite cake (followed by a three day long row over whether a cheesecake is a cake or not), and favourite animal. As this game has been quite successful, we’ve now moved on to the more advanced questions. We’re currently on ‘what’s your favourite animal behaviour that you’d like to have yourself?’ Being able to swim really fast like a shark, being able to fly like an eagle, and being strong like a tiger have all been well thought out answers. I, however, take a different view, and I think that we can all agree that if we could take any animal behaviour for ourselves we would all pick hibernation. Just think how much better life would be if we all went to sleep for four months over the winter, although I’m not suggesting you pack yourself away in a cardboard box with some lettuce like a tortoise, but human hibernation would have a sense of style attached to it. Ignoring the obvious plus side of having a wonderful four months sheltered away from the cold

and dreary weather of the winter, there are many positives we would receive; we would be spared the misery of Christmas soap operas, no more having to scrape the windscreen in the morning in the freezing cold, and no more failed new year’s resolutions. The environment would have a bit of a chance to recover if 6 billion people took a couple of months off and went to sleep, and we wouldn’t ever have to worry about whether the roads have been gritted or not as by the time we wake up we will be in the warmth of spring. Best of all though, we would all spend September and October stuffing our faces to build up fat reserves to keep us going through the winter. I’m imagining some sort of massive two month long party which would see us through to spring. And of course, whereas now we all hit the gym for a week-and -a-half in January in a misguided attempt to burn off the Christmas pounds, when we wake up from our hibernation we’ll all be beach body ready just in time to book our summer holidays. I can see literally no downside to this, so I’ll see you in the spring!

Apologies to any arachnophobes reading, for the second month running, we are discussing spiders. invertebrates. The chances of the children being bitten are miniscule and even if they do bite the injury will be lighter than a wasp sting. Yet these measures would not be taken for a similar number of wasps flying through a school. These spiders are web hunters catching and removing insects such as flies, that can carry many germs, from the school. November is a month where the sunrise takes my breath away, not only for its sheer crisp, clear beauty but also because my summer-sensitive lungs have forgotten the bite of winter.

month where sheep find increasingly ingenious ways to ensnare themselves in hedgerow and briar, when my fingers are numbed for the first time – but not the last - by the icy water as I clean the drinking trough. A month where the numerous and various insect life around the farm hibernate or meet their maker at the hands of the early frosts. When the grey squirrel hopes he has stored enough nuts away to last the winter, and hopes even harder that he can find them again before someone else does. When the morning light reflects off the spider web-carpeted fields, and where the dog doesn’t need inviting into the house on the chill evening a second time. When autumn takes her bow and with her the last golden leaves and rosy apples, and when winter emerges, yawning, blinking in the bright yet midmorning seasonal dawn to drape the holly in her winter plumage signalling the approach of that merriest of seasons and the birth of the Christ-child. When shops play ‘Deck the Halls’, forgetting that most of us still have a hard, cold, often wet month’s labour to traverse, when mittens are sought, and wish lists prepared. A month when the Americans in our midst are Thankful, and we Brits continue thankless.

Urgent appeal for wool Yaxley Knit and Natter Group meet on Thursday afternoons at Yaxley Library 2pm – 4pm during which time a group of like minded ladies spend time with their knitting needles and crochet hooks producing useful items for charitable and other organisations. Of course, we love a good natter as well. We have knitted hats, scarves, gloves and blankets as well as novelty goods for Age Uk; hats scarves and gloves for the homeless, hats for premature and new born babies for the City Hospital, fiddle muffs for those with alzheimer’s disease in several local residential homes, donated novelty items to the local food bank, and dog and cat blankets for local veterinary practices. We are currently furiously knitting large numbers of hats and scarves for our merchant seamen. We have been fortunate over the years to have had quantities of wool donated to us which has enabled us to produce innumerable items. However, we have reached a point where we are now in desperate need of for yet more wool to be able to continue to support those charities in need of help. If you have any spare wool that you would be willing to donate, please bring it along to the Library in Lansdowne Road on a Thursday afternoon or call Jessie on 01733 242683 and collection may be arranged.

Yaxley Flower Club Members are looking forward to a demonstration on 15 November by Kathleen Doggett entitled ‘Christmas is Coming’. YAXLEY WI In September it was the turn of Yaxley to hold a Group Meeting for other institutes within the area, and our Speaker was Madge Coles a Chelsea Pensioner. The meeting was very well attended and it is always delightful to hear Madge speak of her life before and since becoming a Chelsea Pensioner. On 8 November we will be holding our A G M but combining it with a Social Evening. The report of our October meeting will be in the December Gazette.

Rotary Club

The Nene Park Academy (NPA) minibus, driven by Assistant Principal, Kevin Hartley, made two trips to the Key Theatre transporting 26 excited Year 8 students (aged 13 to 14 years), eager to embark on the first workshop of their Shakespeare journey. Sponsored by Peterborough Ortons Rotary club they are taking part in the national Shakespeare Schools Festival. In this workshop they were taught the rudiments of stagecraft by staff from the Shakespeare Schools Foundation (SSF). I had the privilege of being in the ‘audience’ of four with Kevin, Niamh and fellow Rotarian (the aptly named) Mary-Helen Shakespeare. On the evening of their actual performance the theatre will be packed with proud families, friends and Rotarians from the supporting club. The Tempest - 20 November Joined by pupils from three other local schools (All Saints Interchurch Academy, Witham Hall School, and The Phoenix School) they will perform on the main stage, at the Key, on 20 November. Students from NPA will perform The Tempest directed by their own drama teacher Niamh Shiggins. Prior to the big night itself they will be guided though a technical session, a dress rehearsal, the final briefing then on with the show! Ortons Rotary Club has raised £575, matched £ for £ by a Rotary Foundation grant, to enable the full cost of this project to be met. Basic Education & Literacy is one of six areas of focus for our Rotary Foundation. Schools’ Shakespeare Festival 16 October to 8 December Across the country, pupils from 1,008 schools will perform in this year’s festival. Since the Festival began 280,000 young people have participated, including the group of students from NPA who took part (also sponsored by Ortons Rotarians) last year. All get the chance to perform abridged Shakespeare plays in one of 136 professional theatres nationwide. Between 16 October and 8 December around 30,000 students will step onto their local stage after months of preparation. They will do something really brave: perform in front of a paying audience in a professional theatre. Ortons Rotary is proud to sponsor this invaluable experience giving a group of local young people confidence and self esteem to last a lifetime. Taking part in the Festival brings Shakespeare to life, encourages team work and crucially, is a lot of fun.

The Lancaster Club Calling all RAF servicemen and veterans. Did you know there is a branch of R.A.F.A in the village that can provide access to support services including S.S.A.F.A and Royal Air Force Association. Located on Main Street next to the fire station, the Lancaster Club is a friendly club that is a great place to meet up for a drink and banter. For our Harvest Festival Service we plan to bring non-perishable items so that we can donate this produce to the foodbank too. We have been advised that although there is a lot of pasta being donated there is a shortage of pasta sauce. Our aim is to donate 100 jars of sauce amongst the other items. We pray that we can achieve this. If you would like to donate to the foodbank we are happy to receive your gifts at either one of our services or at our coffee mornings. With those less fortunate in mind the Peterborough Night Shelter will be in operation again from November. Local churches will be offering shelter to people who would otherwise be sleeping on our streets throughout the coldest time of the year. I hope that this year there will again be some lovely successful outcomes with people finding work and housing. Remembrance Day will fall on a Sunday this year, the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War! If you would like to join us our Service will start at 10.30am. On 10 November, we will be holding our Autumn Coffee morning. There will be our delicious homemade cakes of course, plus a raffle, book stall, gift stall and tombola and a chance to pick up a Christmas gift or two. Come along and join us for a fun morning.

A staggering 7145kg of food was donated between September 2017 and August 2018. We’ve also recently celebrated the Harvest Festival, where we’ve had fantastic support from the school communities in and around Yaxley. The donations we receive help many people and families, and we would like to say a big thank you for your generosity in supporting local people in need. We would also like to thank everyone who signpost to Foodbank and all those who volunteer their time to help and be a friend to those in need. It takes a team, a community, to ensure the success of the project. Without our sense of responsibility to one another, great community projects such as the Community Fridge and the Winter Night Shelter, and St. Peter’s projects like Yaxley Foodbank and Community Sunday, would not succeed. Class 2 NIC lives on by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

In a surprise announcement on 6.9.18, the Treasury confirmed that Class 2 NIC would not be abolished from 6.4.19 as had been on the cards since 2017. Class 2 costs a maximum of £153.40 per year (for 2018-19) and provides some entitlement to the state pension and certain other state benefits. In July 2013, the government launched a consultation into simplifying NIC for the self-employed. Some streamlining of payment methods was achieved, with Class 2 now collected alongside Class 4 with income tax paid under self assessment, but the long-term aim was to merge the two classes. The Class 2 and 4 merger was to take effect from 6.4.18, but in November 2017 the effective date was pushed back to 6.4.19. This plan has now been abolished. The reason given for this U-turn is that 'a significant number of selfemployed individuals on the lowest profits would have seen the voluntary payment they make to maintain access to the state pension rise substantially'. Individuals who have been resident in the UK for at least three years, and paid into the national insurance system, can continue to make NI contributions by paying Class 2 NIC when they move abroad. This is a very useful way for non-resident individuals to build up qualifying years towards to the UK state pension. The proposed abolition of Class 2 NIC was to remove this low-cost route to add credits to their UK state pension entitlement. Those expatriate individuals would have had to change to paying voluntary Class 3 NIC, which costs £761.85 per year compared to £153.40 for Class 2 (2018-19). Who pays National Insurance Contributions? Briefly – 2018-19 rates, as follows:Class 1

Employees earning more than £162 a week and under State Pension age - they’re automatically deducted by your employer;

Class 1A or 1B

Employers pay these directly on their employee’s expenses or benefits;

Class 2

Self-employed people - you do not have to pay if you earn less than £6,205 a year (but you can choose to pay voluntary contributions);

Class 3

Voluntary contributions - you can pay them to fill or avoid gaps in your National Insurance record;

Class 4

Self-employed people earning profits over £8,424 a year.

Ideally, you will have skills that add value to those of our existing team (Finance, HR, Legal, Project Management, Marketing, Buildings, Health & Safety, Leadership, Safeguarding and SEN), but that’s far from essential; and just as important are people who bring with them enthusiasm and a desire to get involved. What a busy and successful first half of term it has been here at Farcet. We have welcomed our new pupils into our Reception Class and they have all settled beautifully into our school community. We have been focusing on our school values of trust, friendship, compassion and forgiveness and thinking about how we can demonstrate these values in all we do. We are particularly thinking about trust this term and our children have been wonderfully reflective about how they can demonstrate this value every day. Our Year 5 and 6 pupils visited Ely Cathedral this month which was focused on the First World War and how we remember those lost. They also experienced worship in the wonderful cathedral setting. We visited our local church of St. Mary’s, along with parents and carers, this month to give thanks for harvest. We had superb readings, poems and prayers from the children and our harvest hymns sounded beautiful. We are now looking forward to next half term and all of the adventures it will bring!

Reaching out: Inviting In We have had a fantastic time recently, getting involved with many different aspects of our local community. In particular, the children have been thinking about how we can help others, and about those who help us. Firstly, we had our Macmillan Coffee Morning at the end of September, and raised a tremendous £371.35 for this worthwhile cause. Then during our Harvest celebrations we had a visit from a local farmer (and his tractor!) to find out more about where our food comes from, and we collected a large number of donations for the local Foodbank. In addition to these charitable activities, Maple Class had a visit from the local Fire Service, and Elm Class went to Burghley House to learn about the life of Tudor people. Such diversity! We have also welcomed some new children into the school since term started, so our immediate community has been growing too. As the nights pull in – make sure your elderly neighbours aren’t left in the dark At this point in the year, the clocks have gone back and we start to think more about winter – and the ideal time to get into the habit of keeping an eye on an older friend or neighbour.

The situation isn’t helped by the many rogue traders who try to tout for work in the local area, often suggesting to the home owner that a roof or guttering are in need of repair before winter sets in. This can lead to vulnerable people parting with their cash and getting nothing but shoddy work and a huge dent in their savings in return. Then there are phone scams, which may on the surface seem to be less intrusive but are equally as dangerous. These can range from callers claiming to be from companies to check non-existent faults on your computer, banks claiming to check your account details and even socalled medical companies suggesting the need for mobile aids from electric chairs to stair lifts. With winter on the way, maybe now is a good time to join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme within your community.

Share these tips with family and friends, and older relatives:  Be careful what you say about yourself on social media  Set your privacy settings  Keep your media profiles, such as Facebook and LinkedIn to a minimum (your name) and don’t post your address or date of birth  Be very cautious about giving out personal information to people you don’t know – age, address, phone number etc  In public places make sure nobody can hear your conversations or look over your shoulder when banking, shopping or making other confidential online transactions. Save our Green Spaces! A local beauty spot, Tenter Hill, is under threat with the proposed development of 30+ houses upon it (recently increased from 20).

he ancient hilly field which follows the Stanground Back Waters is part of the walking route - The Fen Edge Trail - which explores local landscapes, their links between geology, ecology, history & current day life in the fens. The Fen Edge Trail is an initiative set up by the Cambridgeshire Geological Society as part of their Geosites work, with their main partner being The Fenland Trust in Yaxley. The area is been used by dog walkers, ramblers & walkers, children & families for ball games, golf, fishing, picnics, scout groups, bird watching, sledging, skiing, boating, kite flying and is a great local amenity. Tenter Hill has a public bridleway running along the top which is part of the Green

Wheel – this is under threat - as it is planned to turn this into a road to service the new properties. This common land has been used from ancient times with merchants drying their cloths on tenter hooks. From 1800's it is documented that folk would travel across it for the Feast of Stanground. The field is part of a flood plain which floods several times a year & would flood right up to the gardens of the proposed builds – leaving locals with virtually no usable land when flooded. The local Scouts have their Scout Hut there and so the Scouts & our children would be robbed of their green play space forever! We say this is unacceptable & local feeling is very strong.

A winter coat is one of life’s bigger clothing investments, so it makes sense to be fully informed and have a plan before hitting the shops (or the internet!).

he first thing to look at is your lifestyle. Imagine someone who travels by car and parks outside their place of work every day, but who likes to go for country walks with their dog at the weekend. Then imagine someone who waits for a bus or a train every day and has a half mile walk at either end of their commute. They will have different demand from their winter coats. In the UK winters vary from mild to extreme but one thing is certain… it will rain! A waterproof outer shell is a must-have for any winter coat. Look for ‘water resistant’ on the label. Don’t rule-out a proper wool coat; a somewhat unsung property of wool is its water-resistance. Beware though: many coats which purport to be ‘wool’ are a wool blend with only about 20% wool fibres. These will be less resistant to a downpour; more likely to make you sweat and smell a bit fusty after a while. Look at how well insulated the coat is. Proper wool coats are naturally warm and feel luxurious. Among other types of coat insulation is a choice of down or synthetic fibres. Down is a classic, natural insulator. It is incredibly lightweight though less good for very wet weather. If you plan to walk a lot in all weathers it may not be the right choice. Synthetic insulation holds up better against moisture but won’t retain its insulating properties for as long as down. Check all zips and cuffs are made from high quality material that will last. Double zips or a zip and Velcro-flap combination create added warmth. Cuffs should be cosy around the wrists so that no drafts can get in. Once you’ve found a coat you like, examine it to make sure it really is high quality. Make sure all the seams are secure and there are no holes where insulation is escaping. There are many super-stylish winter coats around, but never sacrifice comfort and warmth for style as you will regret it on the coldest wettest days. For example, check that you can wear layers, or a thick jumper under the coat. I’ve found many ‘fashion’ coats have arms which are too skinny to allow for a jumper and thus restrict your movement and / or blood-flow! Finally think creatively. In our first hypothetical example the person might prefer a light warm wool jacket for commuting by car to work, but a thick full-length down-insulated coat for country walks at the weekend. OR, they might prefer to buy a jacket with a lining that can be removed and worn separately as a jacket in its own right for car journeys, then with the waterproof outer layer at weekends. If your budget is tight try searching through charity shops or factory shops. There are some amazing bargains to be found from heavy pure wool overcoats to branded hiking wear.
