forward With the festive season on the horizon, now's a good time to plan gifts for friends and family. By choosing local, eco-friendly, quality products we can benefit nature and communities – and stand up for nature and the environment. Throughout the year, farm retailers have provided a lifeline to local communities with fresh, quality produce and the environmental benefits of buying local food, there’s no better way to thank our farm shops and farmers for their hard work this year than by supporting them over the festive season and beyond. We bring nature indoors with fabulous floral ideas which are an easy way to create an interior design that is inviting, seasonal and sustainable. And, of course, your tree. Did you know that artificial trees have a carbon footprint equivalent to around 40kg of greenhouse gas emissions? And, as the main material in artificial trees is plastic; they contribute to the plastic pollution problem around the world. They are nonbiodegradable, they are sent to landfill or are incinerated, which again, has a terrible impact on the environment via emissions. So, if you don't usually choose a real Christmas tree, maybe this year is the time to start. The firs are grown over a period of seven to ten years and are biodegradable. Not only do they benefit the environment by having a lower carbon footprint due to shorter travel, they also help protect and stabilise the soil. If you’re looking to buy a real tree to complete your green Christmas, visit Peterborough Christmas Trees from 26 November. Stay warm, stay safe ... until next month.

inspire St Peter's Church We enter a season of remembrance as we come to the end of October and move into November. At the end of October, we have All Souls when we remember those who are dear to us who have died and gone ahead of us. We then remember All Saints – those people who have been sainted for the people they were – St Peter is a great example – our own church here in Yaxley. Those people who have set excellent standards in the way they have lived their life for God as they follow in the footsteps of Jesus. People are still being sainted even today and there are many who have lived amazing lives for good and for God who will never be known by the many, but their example is known and treasured by the few. At this time of year, we would usually be inviting you to an All Souls service, a place to remember those who have died throughout this year and those who have died perhaps many years ago but whom you still want to remember in this way. For this year we have moved this service to the beginning of December and will be doing this in a Blue Christmas Service. A service for those who may find the celebrations of Christmas very hard to cope with for a variety of reasons. Anyone is welcome to this service, and we will be having time during this service to remember those who have died who you wish to remember. If you would like the name of your special person or people to be read out, then please do get in touch on the details below and let me know. This service will be on Sunday 5th December at 4pm at St Peter’s Church, Yaxley. We then move on to a different remembrance on 11 November and then on Remembrance Sunday at our morning service and our special Service of Remembrance at 3pm. There will be
no parades this year, but we hope the service will be able to go ahead this year. We know that war rages on today in many countries as well as remembering those who gave their lives so that we might have our lives today. From 7 November, we will have new times for our service. Our morning service which will be contemporary worship will be at 10.30am and we will be having an early evening service at 4.30pm which will be a traditional Communion Service. As we move into the darker and colder months of the year, I hope that we as a church here in Yaxley can offer a place for you to remember and know the love of Jesus who gave everything for us and walks with us today. Explorer packs will be available from the 1 December in the porch of St Peter’s Church. CHRISTMAS SERVICES Sunday 5 December - 4pm Blue Christmas Service in church Saturday 11 to Wednesday 2 December Yaxley Nativity Trail
MOUTH CANCER ACTION MONTH This is a charity campaign which aims to raise awareness of mouth cancer and make a difference by saving thousands of lives through early detection and prevention. Yaxley Methodist Chapel Sunday Services at 10.30am, Busy Bees on Friday mornings with Mums, Dads and Babies and Yaxley Singers on Monday afternoons means fun, laughter, singing, prayers and fellowship are once again making our Chapel a safe, welcoming place to be. It is so good to be able to say that we are open again Sometimes we need someone to simply be there. Not to fix anything or do anything particular, but to just let us feel we are supported and cared are about. That is what the members of our Congregation do so well. Don't worry about taking that first step through our door. A friendly face will be there to welcome you.
Stay safe and God Bless You. 4 44
With Winter nights lengthening and getting colder our thoughts turn again to the homeless people sleeping on our streets. For the 2nd Year the night shelter, where volunteers offer overnight shelter, hot food and companionship, will not be running because of the high risk of Covid in the Peterborough area. If you feel that you could contribute in any way please contact the Light Project, Peterborough Homeless Helpers or Social Echo in Yaxley. If you are unable to join us physically Peterborough Methodist Circuit 0nline Worship continues each Sunday at 10.30 and weekday morning prayers at 8.30am on Facebook and YouTube.

It’s a fairly mild dish, but if you prefer something a little hotter, add a chopped red or green chilli pepper to the minced onion mixture. Serves 4 | Ready in one hour 20 minutes 1 large onion, peeled and roughly chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 2 tsp grated fresh root ginger 2 tbsp sunflower oil 2 tbsp mild curry paste (such as Patak’s) 500g skinless chicken fillets 100g red lentils 600ml chicken stock or water 2 large tomatoes, roughly chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper Boiled basmati rice and onion and cucumber relish (see tip), to serve Fried onions, to garnish
TAR
1 Place the onion, garlic and ginger in a food processor or blender and whizz for a few seconds until finely minced. 2 Heat the oil in a large, deep frying pan and fry the minced onion mixture for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute. 3 Cut the chicken fillets into large chunks and add to the frying pan. Cook over a medium heat until no longer pink. Stir in the red lentils and stock or water. Cover and simmer gently, stirring occasionally for 30-35 minutes until the chicken and lentils are tender. 4 Add the tomatoes and simmer uncovered for a further 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened and the tomatoes are soft. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve with boiled basmati rice and onion and cucumber relish. Garnish with fried onions.
tip To make the relish, simply mix together finely shredded red onion with thinly sliced cucumber, fresh chopped mint, a squeeze of lemon juice and a little salt.

SCHOOL REPORTS
Stretton Preschool The children have enjoyed opportunities to visit our local library in small groups of 8 and we have visited our local parks to collect autumn leaves, conkers and to watch the wind blow the trees' branches. We have touched upon similarities and differences with changes of the weather and our local community that surrounds us. We have also looked at prices of ingredients in our local CO-OP, buying milkshake powder.
It has been a great start to the autumn term here at Farcet and we have welcomed our new Reception pupils into the school This year, we have introduced Forest Schools into our early year’s provision as we now have two fully trained Forest School Leaders. At Farcet, we believe that children benefit from being outdoors, whatever the weather, to get hands-on experience in the natural environment. Sessions are planned to allow children the chance to
learn, explore, challenge, observe, create, build, imagine and play. The feedback from the children has been wonderful and we hope that you can see how much they are enjoying the sessions in the photographs. We will shortly be releasing details of our tours for our 2022 intake so please visit our website www.farcet.cambs.sch.uk and social media channels @FarcetPrimary (Twitter) and Farcet CE Primary school (Facebook).
William de Yaxley In Year Four, as part of our Primary Knowledge Curriculum our children have been celebrating the festival of Harvest, learning how different countries celebrate the harvest and say 'thank you' to God for all the wonderful things that grow on the earth and which we can eat as food. The children then performed a special Harvest assembly to the whole school.
Yaxley Infant School
We also asked our families to support our continued work with the Yaxley Food bank, and, as always, their donations were incredibly generous. As a school community we have donated 281kg of food items to the bank over the last 12 months!
The children have also investigated the effects of climate change on food and how we can help. So much learning, but also so much love and support for our community too. Happy Harvest everyone.
Reading for Pleasure
Following last month’s issue, where we spoke about the new books school had purchased and the training staff had received following the English Hubs reading approach, 'Little Wandle'. Staff have taken this training and delivering high quality phonics sessions.
FAREWELL
The children have considered where our food comes from and that the resources of the world are not evenly distributed so, despite the vast supplies of food, there are people starving.
Reading sessions have also been adopted to ensure that every child is read with an adult three times a week. Our PTFA, Friends of Yaxley Infant School have also made our library a fund-raising priority. Reception and Year 1 child take part in weekly
Holme Primary School
Forest School lessons and the feedback from children has been extremely positive! Following on from this interest the vision is to create a woodland themed library. Hopefully, we will be able to share with you the progress we are making in future issues.
Mrs Thomas
We are now able to hold whole school Collective Worship as well as having the classes play together at lunchtimes.

NEW STOCK
This week I inducted our new Reading Ambassadors and School Councillors. Hopefully, this year the children will get the opportunity to carry out their roles fully around the school. Our Key Stage 2 children will be taking part in a ‘Body Positivity’ project, run by a local artist. This project will allow the children to produce a collection of personal artwork related to body image and positivity, plus group artwork to be displayed in school. We are hoping to invite parents and the local community to view our ‘exhibition’. Sadly, this will be the last article I write for this school. Last year, a review of leadership roles within the school took place and I have decided to take this as an opportunity to seek a headship role outside of the Trust.
HUGE SELECTION of model train sets, Scalextric and much more! Tues – Sat: 10am – 5pm, Sun: 10:30am – 3:30pm, closed Mon.

Thank you to the Friends of Holme School and the Holme Reading Rooms for funding our new play equipment. The musical instruments are a fun, if not noisy addition to our school grounds!
I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of this school for the past 12 years and leave with many fond memories.

greengardening Gardens can provide vital space for wildlife in a human-dominated landscape. Whether your garden is big or small and whatever your experience level, there’s always something you can do to make a difference.
A BIRD IN THE BUSH HEDGE YOUR BETS Marking your garden boundary with a hedge rather than a wall or fence helps to provide more gardening opportunities, and the living boundary may be a real boon for wildlife Hornbeam: this deciduous tree makes great classic hedging and in the autumn its leaves turn an attractive bright yellow. It’s longlived and once established makes a good hedge for roosting birds. It’s easy to keep trimmed and dense, its only downside being few leaves remain in winter. Beech: a tough and hardy deciduous tree. Best kept neatly clipped for a formal look. Although it does shed its leaves, they turn a wonderful tan-brown towards the end of autumn and a high percentage remain on the plants until new leaves appear in springtime. Native Hedging (including hawthorn, wild rose, guelder rose, blackthorn): perfect for a more rural look. Native hedging is often available as a mixed selection of suitable plants and will make an attractive mixed deciduous hedge that will provide shelter and nesting sites for wildlife.
reasonably rapidly and the foliage produces a gorgeous pineapple aroma when crushed. Berberis including B.darwinii: another very dense and attractive hedge, deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen, depending on which you choose. Berberis has plenty of spines too so is often used in ‘defensive’ planting. Euonymus japonica: a great hedging plant with evergreen leaves, many with attractive variegations bringing extra colour and interest to the boundary. Choose a sunny or partly shaded spot, making sure that the soil does not become too dry in summer. Photinia x fraseri: this evergreen shrub makes an interesting hedge and if you choose a variety such as ‘Red Robin’, you can enjoy flamboyant red patches of colour throughout the hedge in the spring as new growth is wonderfully coloured.
Yew: perfect for more formal hedging. It’s evergreen and its narrow dark green leaves make a striking backdrop for plants within the garden. Unlike most other evergreen hedging, it does respond well to being cut back quite hard. This is one of the slowergrowing hedging plants.
Planting Basics
Prunus laurocerasus: also known as the cherry laurel, it’s a large-leafed evergreen that forms a very good, dense hedge. The leaves are a light, glossy green, avoiding the sombre feeling some evergreen hedges can bring.
Prepare the ground by forking in bulky organic matter, such as garden compost, bagged compost or well-rotted manure.
Thuja plicata: known as the western red cedar, the variety ‘Atrovirens’ makes a particularly good evergreen hedge. It grows
10
Plant container-grown hedging plants at nearly any time of year, avoiding very wet, cold or dry weather. Plant bare-root hedging in late autumn to late winter or very early spring.
Most hedging is best planted with each plant about 45cm (18in) apart along the row. For a denser hedge plant in two staggered rows, each row about 30-45cm apart. Keep the young hedge properly pruned to prevent it becoming straggly.
Hedgerows provide food and shelter for many species. Because they often link small woods, they are essential corridors along which wildlife can travel A diverse habitat Hedges may support up to 80 per cent of our woodland birds, 50 per cent of our mammals and 30 per cent of our butterflies. The ditches and banks associated with hedgerows provide habitat for frogs, toads, newts and reptiles. In areas with few woods, many species of birds depend on hedgerows for their survival. At least 30 species nest in hedgerows. Many of these, such as bullfinches and turtle doves, prefer hedgerows more than 4m tall, with lots of trees, whereas whitethroats, linnets and yellowhammers favour shorter hedgerows (2–3m) with fewer trees. Dunnocks, lesser whitethroats and willow warblers prefer medium or tall hedgerows with few trees. Wrens, robins, dunnocks and whitethroats usually nest low down, but song thrushes, blackbirds, chaffinches and greenfinches nest well above the ground level. Grey partridges use grass cover at the hedge bottom to nest. It is therefore very important to manage for a range of hedge heights and tree densities and to maintain a grassy verge at the base of the hedge. Grassy hedge bottoms and field margins provide nesting material and insect larvae for chicks to feed on. Wild flowers and grasses growing up into a hedge also help to conceal nests from predators. In winter, hedgerows can be feeding and roosting sites for resident birds and winter visitors such as fieldfares and redwings.
Which hedgerows are best for wildlife? Thick hedges with wide bases that provide plenty of cover are best but there should be a variety of shapes and sizes from shaped hedgerows to lines of woods. Hedgerows with large numbers of woody species hold more birds. Trees, particularly oaks, support a rich variety of insects and are good song posts. Old trees have holes where blue tits, owls and kestrels, as well as bats, can nest.

KNOW YOUR HEDGEHOGS 1. They are nocturnal Hedgehogs are nocturnal which means that they sleep in the day and only come out at night.
2. They are called hedgehogs for a reason The ‘Hedge’ part of their name comes from where they build their nests hedges, bushes and shrubs. The ‘hog’ part comes from the small snorting/ grunting sound they make which is similar to a pig/warthog.
3. Hedgehogs can hibernate Hedgehogs have the ability to hibernate (although not all do), which makes them one of only three mammals that hibernate in the UK. Hibernating means that they hole themselves up and stay in a dormant state for winter.
4. Hedgehogs are lactose intolerant Hedgehogs are actually lactose intolerant, so milk should never be left out for them, water is perfectly fine.
5. They weren’t always called hedgehogs
res that onderful creatu w e ar gs ho ge Hed d there ens in the UK, an inhabit our gard ehog dg ly facts about he are many friend ow. Here might like to kn for kids that you gs that fascinating thin are some of the ow about them you might not kn
HEDGEHOGS NEED YOUR HELP Hedgehogs are in trouble in the UK as reports come in that fewer hedgehogs are seen every year. Recent surveys show that hedgehog numbers declined by approximately a third between 2002 and 2012 and sightings fell by 4 percent just in 2014. Rough estimates put the hedgehog population in England, Wales and Scotland at about one million, compared with 30 million in the 1950s. In the past, gamekeepers killed hedgehogs because they ate the eggs of gamebirds. Today it is regarded as beneficial and is often called the gardener's friend as it eats large numbers of slugs, snails and other garden pests. Although the hedgehog is in decline and receives some protection from the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, it is not officially a threatened species. Thousands of hedgehogs die every year for a variety of reasons, most of them caused by humans. Here are some hazards faced by hedgehogs: Road traffic; this is probably the biggest danger during the spring and summer. Since hedgehogs roll up when threatened with danger they are easily squashed by cars when trying to cross the road. As the numbers of cars increase, more and more hedgehogs are killed. Habitat loss; The growth in intensive farming since the 1940s has removed many of the hedges, woods and small fields in which hedgehogs thrive. The trend for tidy gardens and lots of decking and paving have also reduced the ‘messy’ habitats of mixed vegetation and fallen leaves that hedgehogs love.
The hedgehog was not always called a hedgehog. Before this they were called urchins which led to the naming of sea urchins.
6. Their long snout is useful Hedgehogs have a really long snout to help them hunt. It is even ahead of their mouths as it makes it easier to forage for their staple diet of insects, worms, caterpillas and berries.
7. They don’t use their eyes to hunt They hunt primarily using they hearing and smell because their eyesight is not very good, although they can see quite well in the dark.
8. There isn’t just one species of hedgehog There are 15 different species of hedgehog in the world. Each are similar but have small characteristic and habitual differences. The UK only has one native species, the European Hedgehog.
9. They have over 5000 spikes Hedgehogs have around 5000 to 7000 spines on their back. These can be raised and lowered to respond to threatening situations. Each quill/ spine lasts about a year before dropping out and being replaced.
10. They have intelligent self-protection Hedgehog curled up in a ball for protection The hedgehog has a vulnerable stomach, which is why it curls up into a spiky ball when predators such as badgers are around.
11. They self-anoint when stimulated If a hedgehog smells or tastes something really strong, it will attempt to cover itself in foamy saliva, much like a cat cleaning itself. This is called self-anointing.
12. They are solitary creatures Hedgehogs venture out on their own after only four to seven weeks of nurturing from their mother. They usually then spend their entire lives alone with the exception of pairing up to mate with another hedgehog.
13. A group is called an array It is extremely rare that you will see multiple hedgehogs together in one place other than when mating, but if you do it is called an array.
Chemicals; the use of garden chemicals such as insecticides and slug pellets is a threat. They reduce the natural food available. Also, tiny quantities of chemicals are present in slugs, beetles etc. and as hedgehogs may eat hundreds of these every month, they can soon accumulate enough poison to affect their health.
14. Hedgehogs are a gardeners’ friend
Drowning; if a hedgehog falls into a swimming pool or steep-sided pond, it often drowns because it cannot climb up the smooth sides. A strip of wire netting fixed to the side, or a pile of stones at the edge will let the hedgehog escape.
15. Little legs walk far
Hibernation; more than half of all hedgehogs die during hibernation due to cold, fire, flood or someone wrecking their nest.
Hedgehogs have earnt this reputation because of their eating habits. Not only do they enjoy berries and fruit but the staple of their diet is made up from pests that are common in our back gardens such as beetles and caterpillars. This helps preserve the fruit and vegetables you may have growing in your gardens. When hedgehogs are out to forage in the evening, they can travel for up to two miles, that’s a long way for little legs! See page 14 for information about how to sponsor a hedgehog

Arrangements Stunning and sustainable scented festive flowers are the perfect gift for you and your loved ones this Christmas. From frosty Nordic whites to traditional ruby reds, explore wonderful arrangements to suit any colour scheme. Amaryllis is a popular Christmas bloom. It blooms with festive bright red flowers that are the perfect match for traditional Christmas colours. Other varieties produce snowy white flowers, ideal for that winter wonderland look. The flowers are very large and trumpet shaped, making them naturally eye catching. There’s no Christmas plant more iconic than the Poinsettia. It’s the most popular houseplant in the UK at Christmas, and with its gorgeous mixture of red and green festive foliage, it’s easy to see why. Around 8 million are sold every single year.
Azaleas are part of the Rhododendron family and are popular houseplants at Christmas, perfect for staving off the winter chill. Their beautiful, full blooms are lovely for brightening up your home, with red and white the most popular colours during the festive season. These plants will be much appreciated as gifts. Originally native to Himalayan forests, Cymbidium Orchids are an unusual and elegant addition to Christmas bouquets. Due to the fact they’re usually found above cloud level, they’re only in season in the winter, so Christmas is a good time to enjoy them. Red roses aren’t just for romantic occasions - they’re also staples of Christmas bouquets. Their vivid colour perfectly matches the traditional colours of the season, giving bouquets an instantly festive look. We especially love them paired with seasonal green berries and golden foliage, for that classic Christmas colour combination. Add some foraged red berries, pine cones, holly and mistletoe as the final ingredients for making a bouquet look truly festive. Similarly, spruce is a beautiful addition, as it’s reminiscent of Christmas trees and winter forests. Finally, gilded leaves of plants like eucalyptus a touch of festive sparkle to any Christmas flowers.

If you are dreaming of a plastic-free Christmas, flowers may seem the perfect solution, but just because they are biodegradable doesn’t mean they are a green or even ethical choice. Where possible, it’s always best to go for local, seasonal and responsibly grown products.
Red varieties are by far the most popular, but other colours, including white and pink, are also grown.

Keeping your flowers fresh 1.Wash your vase thoroughly It’s not every day you receive beautiful fresh flowers, so it’s likely your vase may have been sat patiently at the back of the cupboard collecting dust. To enjoy your flowers as long as possible, it's important to use a clean vase. Because if you don't want to drink from it, why would your flowers? So, carefully wash your vase with hot water and eco-friendly detergent. Allow the vase to dry naturally upside down rather than using a towel. This is the first step to ensuring no bacteria is present when water and flowers are introduced into the vase. 2.Trim stems and add to luke warm water As soon as your flower delivery arrives, it’s important to trim the stems and place them in warm water right away. This will help your bouquet last that much longer. Allowing them to soak and rest in a cool spot for 24 hours are just what your flowers need to look their best. (Please note that flowers grown from bulbs, like tulips, are an exception and prefer cold water). 3. Add flower food The little packets of powder that come with store-bought bouquets are usually made up of a combination of sugar, citric acid, and bleach, but they generally don’t help
Sustaining sustainability Now that you know how to make those fresh flowers last as long as possible, you can make your floral arrangements as sustainable as possible by buying your flowers from a local florist and asking for them to be wrapped in paper, not plastic. Avoid sending your flowers to landfill When flowers are thrown away in the normal bin, they end up in landfill. As they break down there, they produce methane, which is a harmful greenhouse gas. But the good news is there’s lots you can do to stop your flowers ending up here. 1. Dry them and keep in a vase all-year round 2. Press them to pop in a photo frame or album. 3. Pop them in your compost or garden-waste bin much and the packets they come in are just another piece of singleuse plastic. So, here are two eco-friendly flower food solutions that work, and better still, you can easily make this yourself. Orange soda is high in citric acid, which helps flowers absorb water more quickly to avoid wilting. Just add a splash of orange soda to your flower water and you’ll see a big difference in how long they last. Another naturally effective flower food is over-the-counter aspirin. Adding half a crushed pill to your flower water lowers the Ph level of the water, making it easier for flowers to suck it up.

We may be firmly in the supermarket age, but as an increasingly food-savvy and environmentally aware public, farmers are seeking to diversify and reconnect with the consumer. There are many benefits to buying from farm shops than just price alone. As supermarket scandals have shown, traceability can be a very murky area and things are not always as they seem. Many have ranges that are labelled as though they come from a local farm, yet the farms in question are completely fictional. Food provenance is so important as is the reassurance of knowing that your food has come from a reputable source with real attention to food values. Farm shops may appear to be the more expensive option in some cases but you will benefit from being able to buy the exact amount you want even if it’s just two sausages and a single rasher of bacon – ultimately reducing costs and waste, which is such a positive for families of odd numbers who may need one more or one less lamb chop than the four pre-packed. Farm shops offer a fertile ground for small local businesses who are really passionate about what they do and that enthusiasm comes through in the superior quality of their produce. They are proudly supporting local businesses who, in turn, support the local economy by employing local people.
Throughout the pandemic, farm retailers have provided a lifeline to local communities, delivering food to vulnerable people and sourcing supplies during shortages, which has helped to establish them as reliable food suppliers, alongside shops providing a relaxed but Covidsafe environment for shopping which consumers find less chaotic than other retail settings. Many farm shops have worked round the clock transforming their business model to meet demand, such as introducing click and collect services with staff adapting from serving in farm shop cafes to processing and delivering online orders. Buying fresh produce from local growers cuts down on food miles & CO2 emissions. Planting and harvesting crops by hand without the use of pesticides and chemicals is much better for the environment than buying mass-produced fruit and vegetables. There’s no better way to thank our farm shops and farmers for their hard work this year than by supporting them - not only over the festive season but into 2022 and beyond.

FRIENDLY FARMING yaxleyyuletide by Lisa Martin
At the door of 2021, at a time when the year ahead held no prospect beyond two COVID-19 vaccinations and the journey to ‘unlock’, I made a series of resolutions here on the farm ranging from trying to be outside at sunrise and sunset which helps the body’s natural circadian rhythm, to ensuring I turn the shower off whilst I applied shampoo or shower gel, saving water one drop at a time.
TOUCHING THE SOIL EVERY DAY I soon learned that being outdoors for sunrise in January at 8am and again in the afternoon at a time when civilised society typically ‘take tea’ was a lot easier than a boot camp reveille in mid-June at 0440 hours when even dairy farmers are fast asleep. There was, however, one resolution that throughout the year continued to inspire me, and if anything, became easier. I resolved to touch the soil every day. Now whilst that may be unusual were my home an urban high rise and my occupation a sedentary nine to five, I’m a farmer, so surely that’s something I do daily already? Surprisingly (or perhaps astonishingly), the answer is no. And so I committed to touch the soil every day; be it the silty clay of our arable fields growing cereals or oilseeds, or the matted loam beneath our woodland or grass meadows, or even the tilth from the small triangle of flower bed by the back door. There are many reasons to touch the soil. Some people report feeling more grounded (excuse the pun), others are transported from everyday chaos to the peace and simplicity of the natural world, and still others just like getting dirt under their fingernails. Studies have shown that certain soil microbes mirror the effect on neurons in our brains’ that drugs such as Prozac provide, possibly stimulating serotonin production and making us happier and more relaxed. For me, it can bring happiness
bordering on elation and helps me in my understanding of the soil and my passion for farming. On our farm we stopped using the plough last century and nowadays we don’t till the soil at all. Our ‘zero till’ system instead means we sow the seed direct into the ground to take advantage of the many benefits that stopping our annual soil tillage provides; protecting our earthworm soil architects, retaining natural drainage and the subterranean, fungal labyrinth, keeping nutrients in the ground and out of the rivers, shielding our topsoil from extremes of temperature, rain or frost, and ensuring that our soil biology is in rude health in that ‘Goldilocks Zone’ – not too hot or too cold, neither too wet or too dry, too hard, or too soft. This ode to soil may sound like the ramblings of a maniac, but as we’ve moved away from the ‘answer in a can’ farming of the green revolution to a world that needs a more sustainable approach where we think of calories, carbon, and conservation, many farmers like me have fallen back in love with our soils. Whilst through 2021 my year has been punctuated by Astra Zeneca jabs in April and June, my resolution-turned-obsession saw me encountering soils saturated in January, set like iron in the freezing extremes of February, parched when our April showers failed to materialise, and whilst the
rains came in late spring, it remained bone dry through the summer. With our transition to a more regenerative method of farming, however, our soils have become more resilient and alive, and as we approached our autumn season of sowing, it was delicious. In fact, not content to just touch the soil, I’ve taken to getting right down and filling my nose with ‘geosmin’, the signature scent of healthy, moist, earthy, fertile soils. As farmers we have moved from simply feeding and protecting our plants to feeding and protecting our soils and allowing the soil ecosystem to provide for, and protect our crops. There is still much work to be done and I hold curiosity as one of the highest qualities in farming as we steward the environment, produce safe, nutritious food, and champion animal welfare. I hope that our policy-makers who paid my grandfather to pull out hedgerows and plough hay meadows after World War Two in their quest to feed the nation, and drove my father to replace those same hedgerows and biodiversity through the nineties and 'naughties' are awake to the necessity of soil health and keep up with those legion farmers who are feeding both nation and nature, and protecting that most valuable national asset. And to those decision-makers following the dead-end, conjured zeitgeists, and populous, metropolitan ‘movements’, wake up and smell the petrichor.
And to those decision-makers following the dead-end, conjured zeitgeists, and populous, metropolitan ‘movements’, wake up and smell the petrichor.
Petrichor is the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. The word is constructed from Greek petra, "rock", or petros, "stone", and īchōr, the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology. Source: Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrichor

With such an array of complementary therapies on offer, it can be difficult to know which one might best suit your particular ailment or condition. Here's the low-down on some of the most popular therapies and the kinds of conditions they can help.
Acupuncture Acupuncture uses the insertion of fine needles into particular points in the skin. Where the needles are placed will depend on your condition. Acupuncturists believe that stimulating these points can correct imbalances in the flow of qi or energy (see also Traditional Chinese Medicine below). Good for: pain relief (it is sometimes used post-surgery), menstrual and menopausal problems, tendonitis, urinary problems, sports injuries.
Chiropractic Chiropractors work to correct dysfunction in the joints and muscles and work particularly on the spinal column, where problems such as neck and back pain can originate. Through manual treatments, such as spinal manipulation and adjustment, it can treat and help to prevent mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Good for: headaches, lower back pain, neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, Scoliosis, stress.

Homeopathy Homeopathy uses highly diluted substances – usually given in tablet form – that are said to help to trigger the body's own natural system of healing. Based on the principle of treating 'like with like', the tablets contain minute amounts of substances, which in large doses would trigger a reaction, but in minute doses actually help to alleviate the condition.

Good for: allergies, upper respiratory tract infections, bronchitis, hay fever, pre-menstrual syndrome, sinusitis.
Naturopathy Naturopathy uses a combination of natural therapies to help the body to heal itself. Therapies include diet, hydrotherapy, osteopathy, herbalism,
homeopathy and exercise, which can all help the body to cleanse itself of toxins and alleviate stress. Good for: chronic and acute conditions, such as digestive problems, chronic fatigue, hormonal problems, anxiety.
Osteopathy Osteopathy is considered mainstream these days and you can often be treated on the NHS. Working on the bones, joints and muscles, osteopathy uses manipulation, massage and light movements to holistically rebalance physical, mental and emotional problems. Good for: back pain, pregnancyrelated problems, sports injuries.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) TCM works on the belief that illness is caused by disharmony (or dis-ease) in the body due to an imbalance of the flow of qi or energy. Qi is made up of two forces, yin and yang, and illness occurs when one of these forces dominates. A combination of Chinese herbs and acupuncture is usually used. Good for: asthma and chest conditions, skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea.
What to expect from a consultation During the first consultation with your therapist you will be asked a lot of questions about your overall health, not just about your particular condition. This is because complementary therapists look at the body as a whole, not just one part of it. Remember to always consult your GP about your condition and don't stop taking any prescribed medicine without discussing it with your GP first.

Scents described as ‘fresh’ often contain a blend of ‘green’ notes that are evocative of things like springtime, citrus fruits and freshly cut grass. The overall scent is light, clean and refreshing.
Floral Encompassing a multitude of aromas taken from flowers, this family’s fragrance is totally floral. With inspiration drawn from the scent of a single bloom or a vast bouquet, ‘floral’ fragrances can contain notes of rose, lily of the valley, jasmine, cherry blossom, honey flower, violets and many more. These fragrances can be sweet or powdery.
Oriental Extravagantly exotic, ‘oriental’ scents are often formed with notes of amber and vanilla. Known for their sensual fragrance, Orientals tend to be ‘heavier’ than other groups and are altogether more powerful fragrances.

Inspired by the ‘woody’ fragrance of oak, sandalwood, cedarwood and moss, this family is heavily aromatic and masculine – many of these notes are used in men’s fragrance. Patchouli, vetiver and pine lift the woody notes, for a crisp scent.
Message in a bottle
ou might already be avoiding Y artificial flavours, synthetic ingredients and preservatives when it comes to your diet but have you ever thought about what goes into your perfume? There are around 3,000 different chemicals commonly used in perfumes but glance at the back of a bottle and often you’ll only see one word: ‘fragrance’. This seemingly harmless word masks the fact that one-third of those ingredients have been flagged as known, or potential, chemicals of concern. In today’s beauty landscape, being cruelty-free, socially fair and eco-friendly should be a given for all brands – no exceptions, no excuses. But some are taking it a step further, whether that’s by giving back to nature, finding innovative ways to reduce pollution or tangibly transforming communities. Vegan products can actually be tested on animals since the ‘Vegan’ label is solely to do with whether the ingredients constrain animal products. And some cruelty-free products may contain animal-derived ingredients (such as honey or beeswax). Labels can be mind-boggling, and the sheer amount of information we’re faced with when we go shopping can be overwhelming. By learning what goes into your favourite cosmetics products, you can help end animal abuse and make a difference in the world at large. To be 100% certain that no animals were harmed in making your cosmetics look for both vegan and cruelty-free products. The dynamic of taking and not giving back needs to change. There is still much irresponsible activity in perfumery, from deforestation to river pollution. But it’s changing: manufacturers are leaning towards more transparency, being cleaner and having a conscious eco-impact.

pawsforthought What is canine hydrotherapy Canine hydrotherapy is a form of nonweight bearing exercise; this can be seen in either a swimming pool or the use of an underwater treadmill. Hydrotherapy involves the use of key water properties which are important in facilitating rehabilitation The hydrotherapy pool allows the animal to exercise in a non-weight bearing environment which relieves pressure on joints reducing pain and encouraging movement. The pool is very useful for encouraging natural movement and motivating dogs by retrieving or play.
Well Dog Hydrotherapy & Rehabilitation Centre offers rehabilitation and recovery treatments for your dog
Water way to go! Editor's note ... Daley, my 15-year-old rescue dog, suddenly became lame, to the point we had to carry him. A visit to the vets confirmed an Osteoarthritis diagnosis which is now being managed by a monthly injection and his hydrotherapy sessions, both of which are working really well.
Why canine hydrotherapy When dogs aren't moving, they lose muscle very quickly. Hydrotherapy helps them work their joints, maintain muscle mass, and move around comfortably all while minimising their discomfort. Warmer water is typically used for such therapy or recovery sessions as it helps loosen tight muscles
What can hydrotherapy help with?
Daley is now able to walk, run and play with his younger brother and doggie pals, so I can thoroughly recommend Well Dog Hydrotherapy. The ladies are great and Daley loves his fortnightly visits.
Hydrotherapy can help dogs with a wide range of health and mobility issues. Here are just some of the things that hydrotherapy can help with • Arthritis, Hip & Elbow Dysplasia • Hip Surgery & Replacement

As the colder weather sets in – winter proofing your property can be kinder to the environment and your pocket. At this time of year, the elements can take their toll on the home; we can expect gusty winds and heavy rain to play havoc when it comes to guttering, roof tiles, fences and even trees.
the insulation cladding around your boiler. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst – causing potentially expensive water damage.
But the changing of the seasons is a popular time for rogue doorstep traders to avoid hibernation and inflict their own kind of winter misery on unsuspecting homeowners.
Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property is to bleed the radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently.
Trading Standards always advise to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who ‘happen to be in your area’. They will ask for cash up front, and more often than not it will be for work which may be unnecessary. If you engage with these callers, the work may not be completed, expensive and sub-standard. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card – if you begin to feel vulnerable or intimidated - and say you will contact them at your convenience should you need their services. Also be very wary of leaflets – do your research first by checking their contact details or ask a family member or friend to do so on your behalf. However, there are some simple but effective ways you can take steps to winter proof your home and garden, and avoid a November nightmare: The hot weather in the summer can cause uPVC doors and windows to expand and become mis-aligned. Check to ensure that you do not have any drafts as a properly insulated home is an absolute must, especially with the increase in energy prices.
Get a boiler service. Arrange for a professional to service your boiler each year. As everyone starts to switch on or boost their central heating, the surge in gas consumption can lead to a big increase in boiler breakdowns. Clear out your gutters. In autumn, leaves can collect in gutters and drains, leading to blocks and overflows - so it’s best to clean them regularly. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards to help prevent your gutters becoming blocked in future. So, for all those winter maintenance jobs that still need planning in before the festive season, www.safelocaltrades. com should be your first port of call. With over 70 different categories, we have a range of local professional, recommended and reliable trades from Double Glazing (uPVC) repairs, Alarms, CCTV and Security Specialists, Carpet Cleaners, Gutter Cleaning & Repairs, Plumbers (Gas & Oil), Electricians, Fencing Specialists, Roofing Specialists, Tree Surgeons – and just about anyone who can provide a service for your seasonal maintenance needs.
