A tea party was held on Saturday 5 September in Holme Village Hall to celebrate the forthcoming retirement of Les Baker.

Children and adults alike are invited to dress up and enjoy the spooky fun when they join Harry the Wizarding Train Spotter at the Nene Valley railway on October 31st for an exciting train ride, complete with spooky happenings.

he Minister for Correction will welcome the little horrors to the Wizard’s Express. He expects them at the railway promptly, for 6.30pm, ready for a 7.00pm departure! There will be goodie bags and glow sticks for them once on the train.Those who survive the hour and a half trip, including

ver 100 villagers were there for the opportunity to thank him for being their postman in Holme for 34 years. During this time, Les has given an exceptional and dedicated service, which has been very much appreciated. John Bliss presented Les with a walking stick handcrafted by Dave Thomas, a house sign carved by Howard Watson, along with a cheque. Les isn’t retiring for a few weeks yet, but everyone wishes him well for the future.

Young bowls champion seeks sponsorship

Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club

Chloe Brett, is a young bowler, from Yaxley, whose winning skills have now earnt her the opportunity to play in the Australia Opens next year.

hloe, who is 15 years old and attends Sawtry academy, has been bowling for four years. In that time, she has already won the county under 25 singles, under 18 singles and under 25 pairs. She is also a member of the ladies’ county team and the under 31 county team and has been representing Huntingdonshire at the National Finals in Leamington. This year has been particularly successful for Chloe, being firstly selected alongside 16 other girls in the country to represent England in the Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa, and getting down to the last four. Unfortunately, she was not selected to go to Samoa, but was selected to play in the under 18s England team, which played against Wales on 5 & 6 September in Wootton Bassett. The team (England) managed to beat Wales 16-8 and Chloe felt very proud

Although she has almost come to the end of the outdoor season, and is ready to start her indoor season, a further opportunity has now arisen for Chloe. She has been offered the chance to play in Australia next June in the Australian Opens, against some of the best players in the world and an opportunity to gain great experience playing in another country. As you can appreciate opportunities and dreams like this do not come up for us youngsters very often and it is not cheap with flights and accommodation, so I am currently looking for a local company/ companies who would be happy to be a sponsor for me. In return I will have the company advertised on my bowls kit, which will not only be displayed locally but all around the country.” Chloe Brett

eld as always at Skegness, our two ladies; Kathy Browning & Viv Hempsell succesfully managed to clear the first round against strong opposition, an even harder match proved a bit too much in the next round, yet still a wonderful achievement! Our two gents; Robert Heath and Tony Belson, excited our many club supporters as they stormed through three rounds with very convincing wins to reach the final! However, a tricky rink then proved their downfall and their opponents found the line, meaning we will have to wait until next season to have a national champion in our club. Nonetheless, their three wins made a vital contribution that enabled Northampton to win the Victor Ludoram, for the first time since its inauguration in 1979. Another win for Northants in the Adams Cup, with strong contribution from our Chairman, Graham. Apart from the serious business, Finals Day is always a great social event with lashings of food and high spirits and, of course, one of our famous raffles! This year Chairman, Graham showed the other contestants a clean pair of heels by winning no less than six of the trophies! He is pictured above collecting the first of these from President Joyce Needham. Our first timers; Julie Cooper and Norma White both fought hard against formidable opponents but could only manage runner up. The first social event of the winter will be a Quiz Night 7.30pm on 17 October.

HAT Club Report The HAT Club met at the Village Hall on the second Wednesday of the month; 9 September.

oanne Philcotte from HACT (Huntingdon Association for Community Transport) spoke about the voluntary bus scheme which they organise. To access this facility or for more information please ring 01480 411114 or go to the website www.hact-cambs.co.uk John Bliss then gave a very interesting talk alongside his extensive collection of archaeological bits and pieces picked up from the Fen soil during his years as a farmer. Holme (the name means an inlet) village was originally situated on the edge of the largest freshwater lake in southern England. There are therefore artefacts remaining from the tribes that settled around the edge of what is now known as Whittlesey Mere.

Holme WI John showed us some examples of his ‘finds’, which included Roman coins, petrified sea urchins, round stones; that were possibly used as missiles of some sort, including cannonballs, pre-historic bones, beautiful flint axes, stone anchors used by the fishermen, a three-pronged metal hook; maybe used to clean a horse’s tail, a small, metal lion rampant, a tiny headless porcelain doll, a silver thimble, pieces of Roman mosaics, horseshoes and, most impressive of all, a completely intact Roman pot. He also talked about the history behind some of his finds and the landscape around the village. This was a fascinating insight into the origins of Holme Village which was followed by afternoon tea. The next meeting is on Wednesday 11 October when the Yaxley Singers will entertain.

We were entertained this month by the fabulous Helen Tilley, who after experiencing the expense of a new hat in a shop thought ‘I’m sure I could do that for half the price’. Five years later, she has a thriving business making and selling the most amazing creations at a fraction of the cost. We heard how she does it all and then had great fun trying them all on. A superb evening and lovely to hear such an unusual talk. Next month is our National WI Centenary celebration which is open to members only. We are running a Christmas Floral Day on 5 December; the morning session is making Christmas wreaths (cost: £35) and the afternoon session is making table decorations (cost: £25). Spaces are limited, so please contact me if you are interested.

Yaxley WI Jennifer Hodges gave a most interesting talk, with role play, on Dementia Friends; a very helpful insight for if or when we, or someone we know, is affected with dementia. Whilst enjoying tea and biscuits, our own Phyllis Black auctioned off goods donated by members to raise funds for the club. There were many varied items and much competitive bidding so perhaps it wouldn’t be advisable for us to visit an antiques auction! Well done Phyl! Our next meeting will be held, as usual, at The Lancaster Club, Main Street on 8th October when Pauline Salmon will demonstrate how to make a Christmas Decoration. We look forward to seeing members and visitors.

October Bulletin Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service

Winter is coming and after seeing a rise in chimney fires last year, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging all residents to get their chimney professionally swept before the cold sets in. Top tips to enjoy an open fire safely: 1 Sweep your chimney at least once a year and get brickwork inspected, especially the chimney breast and roof space.  Do not bank fires too high or overload the grate, remember to let them burn down well and check the hearth before going to bed.  Use a fire or spark guard to prevent accidental fires.  Do not place objects on or over the mantlepiece as this may cause you to stand too close to the fire when you try to reach or use them.  Burn only suitable fuels and avoid burning resinous woods as soot builds up quickly.

Firefighters on the move to make way for new fire station Yaxley firefighters have relocated to allow redevelopment work to start on the crew’s new fire station.

n-call firefighters from the Huntingdonshire village officially moved to the temporary site in Enterprise Court, Eagle Business Park, Yaxley, on 1 September, and will remain there until the build of the new fire station is complete. Planning permission has been granted for Yaxley Fire Station to be rebuilt in its existing Main Street location, and Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service has been busy preparing the temporary site for the past few months, ready to relocate the crew while the construction is carried out. Kevin Napier, Station Commander at Yaxley, said: “The crew and Service have been working very hard to make sure the shift to the temporary site went as smoothly as possible and we’re happy the crew is operational and

We hope that by investing in the redevelopment of Yaxley Fire Station it will turn an out-of-date station into a modern, well-utilised building and more functional station for our firefighters. A lecture room, office, welfare facilities and bay with space for one fire engine are included in the plans, which also feature a new smoke house training facility to replace the existing drill tower at the back of the plot. It is anticipated construction will begin on the new fire station this autumn and be completed by the end of next year (2016).

BIG ‘THANK YOU’ The Farcet Clay Shooting Club, also known as the Black Swan Clay Club, had their annual shoot on 6 September.

Training is on Thursday evenings, 6.30-8.00pm, at Peterborough RUFC, Fortress Fengate, 2nd Drove, Peterborough, PE1 5XA. Games are played on a Sunday morning.

he annual shoot was a very enjoyable and profitable day; the members were very busy, with the chairman and ladies doing great work behind the bar and barbecue. The tuition stand was kept busy all morning, and thanks to all the members we managed to raise £1200 for Sue Ryder (Thorpe Hall Hospice). Question: I am a sole trader – can I claim annual investment allowance (AIA) on capital equipment purchased in the year I cease to trade? Answer: No. AIA cannot be claimed in a period of discontinuance, just as writing down allowance (WDA) cannot be claimed. If you cease you will only be able to claim a balancing allowance/charge. Sole traders or partnerships who incorporate (start trading as a limited company) are very often caught by this and the claim will be disallowed by HMRC. If advice is sought from your accountants before incorporation, it may be possible to make up two sets of accounts, the final accounting period ending just before incorporation and AIA will be allowed if expenditure is incurred in the penultimate period before incorporation. If you are therefore considering ceasing to trade or incorporate, I would advise that you speak to your accountant beforehand.

New dividend tax changes from 2016: In the July 2015 budget, the Chancellor set out plans for a new dividend allowance. From April 2016 the current dividend tax credit will be replaced by a new tax-free dividend allowance. The dividend allowance means that you won’t have to pay tax on the first £5,000 of your dividend income, no matter what non-dividend income you have. The allowance is available to anyone who has dividend income. Headline rates of dividend tax are also changing. You’ll pay tax on any dividends you receive over £5,000 at the following rates: 7.5% on dividend income within the basic rate band 32.5% on dividend income within the higher rate band 38.1% on dividend income within the additional rate band

The Chancellor, whilst explaining that the measure would only affect those receiving more than £140,000 in dividend income, made it clear that this was a specific attack on tax motivated incorporation. It means that everyone who receives more than £5,000 in dividends will possibly pay more tax. Dividends received by pension funds that are currently exempt from tax and dividends received on shares held in an Individual Savings Account (ISA), will continue to be tax free.

From 1 April 2016 Cambridgeshire County Council have stated their intention to switch off lights between the hours of midnight and 6am on residential roads and footpaths in a few towns and large villages in the county, to make further financial savings to the street lighting energy costs, (note, street lights on main traffic routes will not be switched off overnight).

owever, this saving does not equate to a reduction in the council tax paid by residents, just a reduction in their operating costs. The County Council did nevertheless offer an option for local councils to maintain the street lights in all areas, this being a contribution of £12 per street light per full year starting in 2016/17, increasing by inflation in future years. Dog mess Dogs being allowed to run free and owners not bagging and binning waste in public areas such as Middleton’s Recreational Ground remain a major complaint in the village. Not only is this unsightly but the health risk posed by not clearing up after dogs gives great concern, especially as these are play areas for all age groups. We must ask that dogs be kept on leads in these play areas and that any mess be placed in the waste bins provided. Should you identify offenders please report to the Parish Council as we are asking the District Council’s dog warden to patrol these areas and take appropriate action. On this subject, we are all experiencing issues with Queens Park, so please be reminded that dogs are not allowed in the Park and this area is a multi-use sports facility for hire and not a public play area.

Yaxley Health Centre Patients’ Association vaccinated at our normal Saturday clinics on the above dates. This is due to the vaccine not being ready until later in October. Clinics will be run through October half term for at risk children. There will be additional clinics for the healthy two, three and four year olds.

Flu jabs This years ‘flu’ vaccination campaign will start in October. Two ‘Flu’ Clinics are scheduled for: Saturdays 3 and 17 October 2015 between 9.00am and 11.00am - No appointment is necessary. The vaccination is available for all patients over the age of 65 and those in at risk groups, who have been routinely vaccinated in the past. Please bring your letter with you. This provides flexibility to be able to manage the increasing workload within GP surgeries. This means that when you first contact the surgery, you will receive a telephone call from one of our doctors who will then triage your needs and place you with the most appropriate health care professional, or deal with your query on the phone. Therefore, appointment availability within our team is generally managed by the doctors, not the reception team. Although within our team of three our roles are varied, together we see a range of acute illness, minor injury and chronic disease. Based on the Doctor First system we have an initial understanding of the reason for your attendance, and the appointment time is allocated accordingly. On occasion there may be more you would like to discuss with us, but

please appreciate we are working to a time schedule, and we may be unable to address other needs at that time. If you have a query that we are unable to answer, we have full support of the GPs a any point during the day. The party is from 3.30 to 5.30pm and there will be refreshments on sale together with a raffle, face painting and glitter tattoos.

Maintenance on divorce – for children and spouses?

Separation or divorce is extremely stressful especially when considering ongoing financial arrangements. All financial aspects need to be considered including housing, pensions and income.

n some cases, in addition to child support payments, maintenance for a spouse is also appropriate. As a married couple, each party has an ongoing obligation to financially support the other, even after separation or upon divorce. Spousal maintenance is generally calculated on a ‘needs vs. affordability’ basis. If one spouse has an income which is much lower than their reasonable monthly outgoings they can be said to have a ‘need’ for additional financial support. Consideration then has to be given to whether or not the other party can reasonably ‘afford’ to pay spousal maintenance, sometimes in addition to child support. Many other factors also need to be considered such as which benefits or tax credits should be claimed now that each party is ‘single’ as opposed to being a ‘couple’. This is an extremely complex area but one that is essential to consider when ensuring that each party has financial security now and in the future. lthough we are approaching autumn (sorry but mother nature marches on!) the havoc wreaked by the CWB continues; brassicas and other plants can be completely demolished if you aren’t vigilant, as a busy mum I know (enthusiastic but novice gardener) discovered when she asked me to look at her kale. All she had left from flourishing plants were stalks still covered in extremely plump, well fed caterpillars who must have thought they were dining at a Michelin restaurant. We’ve attempted a rescue operation but whether it will be a success I don’t know. If you spot CWB around your plants they are probably laying eggs which have a very active life cycle so vigilance is called for during the summer and into the start of autumn especially if it is mild weather. In this instance maybe a trip to get the eyesight tested might have helped as well! Hopefully you will be enjoying the fruits of your labours, making chutney out of any tomato gluts and ensuring you pick crops including spinach and runner beans regularly to ensure as long a season as possible. But as the nights draw in and the growing slows down, when your crops have been harvested and the exuberant summer colour has faded from the borders, early autumn is a good time to take stock and plan.

In the garden think about covering tender plants or taking them in to protect against frost and if you have brassicas on the allotment keep an eye out for pigeons who will strip unprotected caulis and cabbages in no time at all. You can net quite successfully but do it carefully so as not to endanger the birds You can continue planting salad leaves and spinach, even try more basil indoors in good light and early sowings of beans and peas can be carried out from late September through to midNovember. The advantage of sowing early is that plants can establish over the winter and flower and fruit earlier. Many plants are able to withstand quite harsh conditions; however you may need to fleece young plants during hard frosts or snowy conditions. To dig or not to dig is a vexing question in Autumn; digging breaks up the soil and makes weeds easier to control (don’t forget they do keep growing!) and allows birds and other creatures to feast on uncovered pest but if you clear your plot of weeds and debris frost may break the earth up for you – the choice is yours but mind your back if digging is your preference. Imagine you’re snuggled up for the night at home, then BANG! It comes from nowhere. BANG! The room flashes. Where’s it coming from?

Remember, remember ... your pets this November!

nother room might be safe. BANG! It’s here too! You’re scared, you’re confused. BANG! Run to find the family just to be told, ‘get down’. BANG, FLASH! It’s everywhere! None of your usual places are safe but you find something to hide underneath and cower low to the floor, hoping that whatever it is won’t hurt you. This is the experience many pets have this time of year – firework season. The bangs and crackles of the displays can be bewildering and terrifying for animals. There are many ways pets show they are stressed: • Trembling and shaking • Toileting in the house • Inter-animal tension • Excessive vocalisation • Pacing and panting • Refusing to eat • Hiding • Clinging to owner A staggering 80% of pet owners have a pet who is scared this time of year with dogs far more likely

to suffer. Fireworks are no longer restricted to a few nights a year, instead displays are held at any time over the winter season. Sound phobias in dogs can spiral downwards and with no let up, some animals struggle to cope and can take months to get back to their normal selves.

Preparation is key Managing an animal with sound phobia can be challenging and can be approached with three methods; specialist products, behavioural preparation and with common sense. Specialist products – pheromone diffusers and natural ingredients in a capsule designed to help to calm the animal. These products are most effective when given for at least a month before the fireworks start. For extreme cases a vet may prescribe a sedative for the safety of the animal and their owner. Behavioural preparation – firework fear doesn’t just go away on its own, in fact it’s likely to get worse. For the long term, behavioural therapy is recommended.

There are lots of little things you can do while fireworks are going off to help your pet cope: • Keep them indoors after dark • Provide them with a den in their favourite place in the house • Ignore fearful behaviour, stay calm and don’t get angry – it might sound counter-intuitive but comforting a fearful animal only confirms to them that there’s something to be afraid of. • Muffle the sound – shut the windows, doors and curtains and turn up the TV or radio. • Provide distraction – perhaps a new toy or chew.

Skiathos cats

UPDATE

Cromwell Nurse, Nat, is back from helping out a cat charity on the Greek island of Skiathos. There are hundreds of stray cats who desperately need help from Skiathos Cat Welfare Association.

he charity work tirelessly feeding, treating, neutering and rehoming the cats where possible. Nat went over to Greece last month with hundreds of pounds worth of food and medication kindly donated by our staff and wonderful clients. And it made such a difference! They were put straight to good use with the two cat populations – the friendly strays in the town and the true ferals outside (who are much harder to manage). Like all other European countrie, Greece don’t have Veterinary Nurses as we do in the UK, so Nat’s skills were hugely valuable to the charity. For three of the days Nat was in Skiathos she was joined by Vet Inez, from Holland. With Nat’s help, Inez neutered 67 cats in those three days! In total, the Vet neutered 200 cats in her 10 day visit. Nat and the Vet also carried out a leg amputation on one the ‘Bakery cats’, his old injury had left him unable to use his back leg and now there were sores all over causing him more discomfort.

In 15 minutes and with basic veterinary equipment, the team managed to amputate his useless leg and he was ready to face the world again 4 hours later! Sadly, there wasn’t always a happy ending. Nat arrived at the charity to find that a kitten she had nursed back to health from cat flu last year was gravely ill again. Little Calista (which means ‘hope’ in Greek) died in Nat’s arms a few hours later from an unknown illness. Calista was not the only casualty either, Nat and the team also had to put 7 other cats down, including 4 kittens, as they were too ill to save and suffering greatly. These sad times don’t put the charity off their work, they save countless lives, stop unnecessary suffering and help to control the population of stray, feral, unwanted and neglected cats on the island. Nat plans to return again next year but in the meantime she’ll be continuing her studies here at Cromwell Vets and perhaps convincing some her colleagues to join her for a Greek adventure in 2016?

As the nights begin to draw in and the colder weather approaches, for many it is time to put away their bikes for the year.

Yaxley Riders are still riding strong!

axley Riders have new group rides scheduled for the autumn and winter seasons. After a successful year, with dozens of new cyclists onboard, the popular ‘Beginner Rides’ have now stopped for the season. However, the ‘Night Rider’ - a weekly 30-35 mile ride - has now begun on Thursday nights, meeting at 6.30pm at the white bench in Dovecote Lane. The weekly ‘Spinner’ ride also continues throughout the autumn and winter season, with longer rides of 40 to 50 miles with three groups to cater for different rider levels. They run on

Sunday mornings from 9am at the Sunny Cafe, in Landsdowne Road. All winter rides take place with a strict “no lights, no ride” and “no helmet, no ride” policies. Next month is also the group’s Annual Presentation Evening. It takes place on Saturday, October 10, at Yaxley Football Club’s In2itive Park ground, in Leading Drove, from 7pm and includes an Indian buffet, prepared by Bollywood Tiger, and live music by soul singer Dela. A charity auction will also be held, with part of the proceeds going to this year’s chosen charity, Whizz-Kidz. Tickets are £19.95 each.

What is a responsive website and why do you need one?

ack in the olden days – well before 2007 – web designers had a fairly straightforward job. Essentially we built a site for a client, tested that it worked fine on a PC and a Mac, made sure the customer was happy and went back to our first love of playing video games in dark bedrooms. And then, in 2007, Apple launched its iPhone, quickly followed in 2008 by HTC’s first Android device. And boy did they catch on! By 2011 there were 21.6 million smartphones in the UK and by the end of this year it is estimated that 37.8 million of us will be carrying one of these mini computers in our pockets and handbags. Oh, and did I mention tablets? eMarketer released figures in March that say 32.8 million Brits will be using a tablet at least once a month in 2015, over half of them being Apple iPads. In simple terms this means that around 60 per cent of all internet searching and viewing is happening on phones and tablets. And in case you hadn’t noticed, despite their ever expanding size, the screen on your zappy HTCSamAppleSony Z123Ultra is not quite the same size as the one on your office PC. Which is where responsive web design comes in. Essentially a responsive website is a site that alters its shape to fit whatever it is being viewed on. Whilst – and this is important –

retaining all its functionality. Do you remember in the distant past, well about three years ago, when you had the choice of viewing the ‘main’ site or the ‘mobile’ version? Well that was a dead end. Users going to the mobile site very quickly became bored with the reduced user experience and functionality that was the hallmark of a mobile site. A responsive site is a very different beast. It’s just one site that retains all its functionality and readability whether it’s been viewed on a huge TV or a 4” smartphone screen. The responsiveness is the site’s ability to reformat itself to whatever size and shape screen the users – your customers – are using. The various elements move and resize – like magic, but really it’s code – as the site flexes and changes to give the very best user experience.

And there’s more. And this is important too! Google, who let’s face it just about run the world these days, doesn’t like old unresponsive sites. Google’s search engine algorithms now take account of a site’s responsiveness (and other stuff like original content and social media and up-to-dateness). In non-techie talk, sites that are responsive will rate higher in searches than ones that are not. That simple. ‘But that’s just Google?’ you may say. Did you buy shares? Me neither. In April of this year Google accounted for over 88 per cent of UK internet searches. I’ll say it again: 88 per cent!

Does this matter?

Yes, of course you can. It’s actually really easy and any good web design company, ahem… like us at Dimension6000, can build you one. We design you a lovely fluid template that allows your site’s various elements to shift around dependent on how the user is viewing the site. We do it cost effectively. And no matter where and how your potential customer is viewing your site, it will work perfectly and seamlessly and be a real advert for your business, 24 hours a day. Oh, and Google will love it too. Did we mention that?

Well yes. Really it does! Remember over 60 per cent (and growing) of internet searches are now happening on phones and tablets. If your site isn’t responsive, i.e. it’s been designed for a lovely 21” desktop screen, then it is very likely difficult to read and frustrating to use on mobile devices. Which is where human nature comes in. If it’s hard work to navigate your site on their phones, then visitors are very likely to look elsewhere. And that can be lost business. Lots and lots of lost business. And there’s more. It’s also likely that customers will respond favourably to a good online user experience. It’s

BLOG In my ongoing and fruitless attempts to get even the slightest level of fitness into myself, I have once again donned the florescent polyester shirt of shame and gone jogging again. As it turns out Yaxley is actually quite a nice place to jog round, if jogging round anything could be considered a nice experience (it can’t, in case you wondered).

t’s almost exactly 5 kilometres all the way round which, to the unfamiliar, is about fifty million miles and therefore you are completely fit and toned by the time you’re finished. In case you’re interested, here’s my guide to the route for you: 1 – Main Street – I always start here, mainly because that’s where my house is. It’s nice and it’s flat and smooth, and obviously it’s convenient for me as its right outside my front door. If you don’t live here then it may not be the most convenient place but it’s a good starting point. 2 – Mere View – Taking the unusual approach of ascending up into Hell, time to take on the hill of Yaxley. It may not look all that much when you’re in the car, however when you are jogging you’ll notice that it’s actually as steep as the north face of Everest Take it nice and slowly and you’ll have lots of energy for the rest of the loop. 3 – Broadway – Having conquered Everest you’ll now get your second wind; with a nice flat straight road to run along you’ll be flying. Good thing to, as you’ll get to the shopping centre where the youth of today will be loitering around, who will proceed to laugh at you. 4 – Broadway – The fun continues as you reach the far end of Yaxley, and you get to enjoy the kind considerate souls who beep their horns and shout out their windows at you. Mostly I can’t hear what they’re shouting as I have my headphones in, presumably it’s a cry for help as the suspension’s gone in their twelve year old Fiesta. 5 – Church Street – Downhill all the way here for the home stretch, but you will feel depressed as you see someone twice your age running up the hill twice as fast as you are running down it. Having finished your 5km run you are now entitled to a nice cold beer and some crisps – convenient as you’ve now reached the three horseshoes!
