What a crazy month! I have recently moved house and it’s been hectic to say the least! This month’s cover image pictures some of the teenagers involved with the local youth memorial. It was great to hear that Yaxley Youth Club, along with Ramsey Youth Club, had a day trip to Hunstanton. The Youth Clubs are an essential part of our community and are creating great opportunities for local young people, so a huge pat on the back should go out to the volunteers. Staying on the subject of young people, you may have heard in the press that the Girlguiding programme is being modernised – of course, it’s important to cater for today’s girls with digital skills and modern methods, but rest assured the guides will still be going camping, doing crafts, lighting fires and most importantly having lots of fun! You can read more on page 15. Our local news covers everything, from the local groups, updates from the schools, churches, and library. We try to cover as much as possible each month. Don’t forget to check out the Yaxley Gazette Facebook group, it has lots of news that happens in the area and a great way to discuss local topics. Our community is really thriving and it’s great to be a part of it, but please remember to support local businesses and shop local. I have a new pet. Well I say pet…it’s not really a pet. A hedgehog has taken up residence in the hedge outside my house, and it’s become a bit of a thing for us as a family to keep an eye out for him.

A Nene Park wins national award for Moments with Trees project Nene Park Trust has won a national horticulture award for its innovative ‘Moments with Trees’ campaign. The Trust was recognised at The Horticulture Week Custodian Awards, which honour the achievements of professionals at the UK’s parks and gardens, in the ‘Best Urban Tree Initiative’.

Since itslaunch in April 2017, Moments with Trees has recorded 5,799 of volunteer hours, educated more than 3,010 children and enabled 210 primary school children to plant over 2,500 trees. The events have brought more than 940 people to the Park to learn about the trees planted. The Custodian Awards were held on Wednesday June 27 at Woburn Abbey and Gardens.

ffectionately named Russell (because of the leaves obviously) he appeared one day in our garden during the heatwave, presumably looking for something to eat or drink. A few weeks before we had found a dead one lying outside our garden gate, so we felt a little bit more of a responsibility towards Russell than we would normally – it doesn’t look good for your house to become some sort of hedgehog killing field, whether you’re involved or not. So, we left some food and some water out for Russell. He didn’t get much of it because my cats would literally walk through fire to get to some food, and a small spikey ball certainly wasn’t going to stop them. Even so, he seems to be quite happy to keep coming back and roaming round the garden. If nothing else, it’s nice to see some wildlife that’s still alive – the cats have been bringing my little presents of what Google image search tells me are shrews, so it’s nice to see that there’s at least something that is able to fend them off and stay alive near us. When I was a child my dad used to take me and my little sister out early on a Sunday morning to the woodland

near us to go look for rabbits, something that I recently found out was an arrangement with my mum to let her have a lie in once a week. We used to love it, and even now I still get a bit excited when I see rabbits by the side of the road on the drive to and from Hampton. We also had a pond near us that allegedly had newts in it, but if I’m honest unless they were camouflaged as empty Foster’s tins I never saw any. I suppose the very long and protracted point I’m making is to make an effort to encourage wildlife in your garden – if we’re going to keep building houses on all the green land around us its only fair that we leave something to eat for the animals that lived there.

Peterborough Probus'87 (for men) and Peterborough Probus'90 (for women) are seeking new members. Our men's club comprises members from the professional and the business communities. The women's club was formed as an adjunct to the men's club primarily for wives of the Probus'87 members. Probus clubs are often seen as retired sections of the Rotary Clubs but previous involvement with Rotary is not a prerequisite to membership. There are two meetings per month for men: a coffee morning with a guest

speaker with a lunch meeting later in the month. Ladies meet once per month for a coffee, followed by a talk and then lunch. In between meetings, members meet for variety activities. Both clubs hold their meetings at Elton Furze Golf Club. The titles of both clubs reflect the years in which they were formed. Membership numbers have expanded and contracted over the years but sadly, in recent years, there has been a decline in numbers and both clubs are keen to redress this trend by attracting new members.

After the very hot drought experienced from June to the beginning of August, we are now enjoying more normal English summer weather, which is a relief especially to most of the elderly. In case you are not aware there are about one million, two hundred and fifty thousand Rotarians in over two hundred countries throughout the world. Whether you are a lady or gentleman please consider becoming a Rotarian. You would be very welcome to give it a try, not only at this club but at any of the three clubs in Peterborough. However if you are much younger, say between 18 to 30 you may wish to consider joining the Peterborough Rotary Club. The motto of all Rotarians is "Service above Self" which encourages us to help those less fortunate than ourselves both locally and internationally, in the hope of helping to bring peace to the world. However we have lots of fun helping others and also enjoy a good social life with the good friends we make. So whether, as a Rotarian, you travel abroad or in this country you are welcome and encouraged to visit any local club and enjoy meeting new friends. It can be particularly helpful for those fortunate to have a holiday home to meet the locals and have a more varied social life. If you’re interested please email orton.rotary@gmail.com

Season flying by Kathy Browning and Joan Robinson playing at the National Finals last year. After a really hot June and July, making conditions quite fast for outdoors, we have had some much needed rain and the grass, which was looking a little patchy in places, now looks green and is playing perfectly again. The season seems to go so quickly and we are already getting planning for our finals day in September. Our competition secretary John Thurston has done a sterling job, ensuring all games have been played by the dates assigned and sorting out any disputes. Talking about Finals – congratulations to captain Bruce Saint and his Hurricane’s on reaching the final of the Mick Lewin trophy, which will be played against Market Deeping at Longthorpe bowls club on the 30th August, the result will be in next months Gazette. Congratulation also to our ladies, Joan Robinson and Kathy Browning on winning through to the National Federation finals, which as usual will be played at Skegness.

Also to Chris West and Peter White on reaching the final of the Cook Cup, which will be played on finals day. Going to press we are hoping for good weather and a full turnout for our August Bank-Holiday Monday drive and Barbecue. In the league the Yaxley Seals top still top Div.1 and are looking good for promotion to the Premier division, but some of our other teams are fighting end of season relegation battles, good luck to them all. Our much-anticipated annual raffle was drawn during the half-time period at our ‘open triples’ day. With J. Cade winning the first prize of £100 and A. Watson winning 2nd prize a very special hamper.

I am raising money for EAA as my husband had a cardiac arrest in Norfolk last year, paramedics called the air ambulance and transported him to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital for the urgent medical care he needed. Excellent prizes to be won - 1st prize Whirlpool washing machine, 2nd prize - Coop Food Hamper, 3rd prize - Bathrobe, Towels and toiletries from Christy plus plenty of other prizes. EAAA is a charity which is funded by fundraising and donations, you never know when you might need there emergency help, they were the most professional team I have ever seen, I would so grateful for your support in my efforts to make a difference in some small way.

Yaxley WI In July we had planned to have an outing to Rutland Water but due to transport problems this had to be cancelled so instead several members enjoyed afternoon tea at Dobbies Garden Centre. The food was tasty and it was a nice social afternoon. Our August speaker was Hannah Vandridge of the Norris Museum, St Ives. She spoke on a subject dear to most of us, shopping! However it was quite different as it was through the ages. Hannah showed slides and brought artefacts connected with shopping, mainly connected to the St Ives area. We also learned that St Ives was named after a stone coffin containing a skeleton who was thought to be St Ivo was found, however much later it was thought more likely to belong to a Roman.

A very interesting talk and I think some of us will be visiting the Norris Museum in the near future. Our speaker on 13 September will be Brenda Horden who will speak and show slides of her visit to Bosnia distributing "Christmas Shoe Boxes" Any non members interested in the talk will be made welcome at the Lancaster Club, Main St, Yaxley. We meet in the upstairs room (stairlift available) and start at 7.30 but doors open at 6.45.

New date for our CPR awareness session Apologies we had to cancel the 16 August CPR awareness session we now have a new date. The CPR & defibrillator awareness session will now be on the 14 September 6.30am - 8.30am at The Farmers, Broadway, Yaxley PE7 3NT, this is a free CPR session donations are welcome. We now have our new training defibrillator ready for the CPR awareness session so come & have a go. Please book by text or email so we can make sure we have enough training equipment. In July we saw the return of John Gibson from the Blood Bikes charity. This time John told us all about his adventure riding a Harley Davidson from West Coast to East Coast America. Although the only way he could do this was if his wife came along too. Together they travelled through the Grand Canyon and Death Valley, and some off-beat and unusual towns and places, meeting lots of different people along the way, with a must-do stopover in Las Vegas. John is a good speaker providing lots of humour and interesting photos, standing in the snow in one part of the journey and then a sweltering 57 degrees in Death Valley, and we thought we were having a hot summer (for once). He grew up in Northern Ireland where the only sport worth mentioning is the motorbike road racing, so motorbikes have been

a huge part of this life, and he continues this passion delivering blood to the hospitals. A small group of us recently went to Tolethorpe Outdoor Theatre, where we picnicked before watching School for Scandal, a lovely warm evening although a bit blowy, but the Pimms went down well. Please remember, if anyone is interested in joining please do come along and see what we are about and what we get up to. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm. All ladies will receive a warm and friendly welcome.

Over the weekend 7, 8 and 9 of September, Glatton Village, in association with The Fenland Trust, are holding a festival to commemorate the life and works of Glattons’ most famous resident; writer, playwright, composer and journalist, the late Beverley Nichols. The Festival starts on Friday 7 September with a “Roaring ‘20s/’30s party in the Village Hall where the lovely Leenie-Jayne will sing a selection of songs from Nichols’ era and The Blitz Dancer will perform a medley of dances from that age. The Addison Arms will serve a very special commemorative ale (Beverley Nichols) brewed especially for the occasion by Angles Ales. The Addison Arms will also host a beer festival on the Saturday and Sunday with activities for all the family, including more of the commemorative ale by Angles Ales. A Literary Exhibition and vintage car show will take place on Sunday 9 September in Glatton Village Hall where you can see and handle almost all of the prolific writers works. There are a good many first edition copies and many works signed by the author himself.

The exhibition starts at 10am and concludes with a service of remembrance in St Nicholas Church at 3pm. A plaque specially commissioned by The Fenland Trust will be unveiled at the crossroads (exactly half way between Nichols former Tudor cottage and the cemetery at St Nichols Church where his ashes were scattered) at 3:45pm. Apart from seeing and handling Nichols works, there will be a talk on the life of Nichols and cars from his era will be on display outside the hall. The event is being promoted by English Heritage and The National Trust as one of their Heritage Days for 2018 and the Literary Exhibition and church service is free to all. So, why not learn more about Beverley Nichols and visit this unique, one-off festival.

We hope you have enjoyed helping the mischief makers, many of you came to our events, it was lovely to see you all. Kimbolton Country Fayre and Classic Car Show The Kimbolton Country Fayre and Classic Car Show in its 27th glorious year was held in a sweltering 29 degrees on Sunday 8 July.

n figures, in the magnificent grounds of Kimbolton Castle and despite the heat, 6 000 people attended, 900 Classic cars, 60 stalls and a magnificent £14 000 was raised for Rotary and/or Sporting Bear supported charities and good causes. Over 70 volunteers worked together on the day to culminate a year of planning. Organised by the Rotary Club of Kimbolton Castle in partnership with the Sporting Bears, every year new acts are sourced to entertain and ensure our Show regulars and newcomers alike are not disappointed. Other local Rotary clubs support with volunteers on the day along with Friends of Rotary and family members.

This year in the main ring, the Sealed Knot, Heavy Horses, Savage Skills Free Style cycling stunt team, Beagles and a Classic Car Parade were complimented on the stage by the Haka, Gavin James Burke – Classical and Musical Theatre Vocalist, Galaxy Big Band and Lindyhop Dancers and Morris Dancers. For children the Millers Ark Mobile Farm, Mobile Cave and Bungee Trampolining all proved popular, though the heat had its toll on too much exertion. The flypast by a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and around 20 vehicles offered Dreamrides. Not forgetting of course the wide selection of stands, stalls, beer and tents that make the event complete.

In this month’s blog, I wish to discuss the dangers of swimming in open water such as rivers, lakes, canals, reservoirs, ponds and lochs. This is one of the hottest Julys’ on record and I know the water looks tempting and refreshing, but with the recent drowning of a young man in Cambridge last week and reports of youths swimming in the local rivers and lochs I feel I need to address the issue. Around 85% of accidental drownings occur at open water sites. Many of these

drownings occur due to a lack of knowledge and understanding of open water safety. The basic principles of open water safety, combined with knowledge and understanding of the hazards, can increase enjoyment of open water and significantly reduce the number of incidents that occur each year.

Don’t:

l Swim at unsupervised (un-lifeguarded sites) including lakes, quarries reservoirs and rivers l Jump into the water until you have acclimatised to the water temperature l Jump into the water from heights or ‘tombstone’ l Swim into deep water which will be colder

Do:

Swim at supervised (lifeguarded) sites Swim parallel with the shore, where you can quickly get to safety l Be aware of underwater hazards l Swim with friends or family, so that you can help each other if you need to l Look for signs and advice about the specific dangers at the place where you are swimming l Think about what you will do if something goes wrong l Contact a reputable outdoor pursuits or coasteering centre if you want to take part in more extreme activities l l

Dangers of open water include:

The height of the fall or jump if tombstoning The depth of the water – this changes and is unpredictable l Submerged objects may not be visible such as shopping trolleys or bicycles l Obstacles or other people in the water l Lack of safety equipment and increased difficulty for rescue l The shock of cold water can make swimming difficult and increase the difficulty in getting out of the water l Strong currents can rapidly sweep people away l Uneven banks and river beds l Water quality e.g. toxic algal blooms and industrial/agricultural pollution can make you ill l l

The GB Home Guard Band The GB Home Guard Band was founded in 2015. Many of the band members are ex-service musicians who have come together to harness their talents to perform the classic military band repertoire. This includes marches, light classical, selections of popular show music, soloists, swing music and tributes to our armed forces and of course music from the 1940s.

David Marshall Bandmaster David joined the Regimental Band of Durham Light Infantry in 1961 as a junior bandsman. In 1968 he transferred to the Staff Band of the Royal Corps of Transport where he quickly established himself as one of the band’s most competent cornetists eventually rising to the rank of senior sergeant and leading the cornet section. In 1988-1989 David was Bandmaster of The Burma Band Durham Light Infantry, (Territorial Army). In December 2017 David was appointed Bandmaster of the GB Home Guard Band.

Shout reassurance to them and shout for help and ensure the emergency services are on their way (call 999 inland or 112 if at the Coast) l Without endangering yourself, see if you can reach out to them, extend your reach with a stick, pole, item of clothing, lie down or stay secure. Alternatively throw something buoyant to them such as a ring buoy, part filled plastic container, ball or anything that will float. l Keep your eye on them all the time and shout reassurance urging them to propel themselves to safety. l

Conington Evensong A traditional 1662 Choral Evensong will be held in the closed church of All Saints, Conington – just South of Norman’s Cross and to the East of the A1M – at 3pm on Sunday 23 September.

The 9 Guiding Units in and around Yaxley have been having a lot of fun over the past few months!

he Yaxley Rainbows went to Ferry Meadows to explore, one pack of Yaxley Brownies went to Woburn Animal Kingdom and made friends with the inmates there. Holme Guides went kayaking and got very wet and also learnt some compass skills whilst Yaxley Guides went bowling and had a campfire and a water fight at the HQ grounds. The Senior Section – now to be called Rangers – went camping in Cornwall and had a great time at the beach, surfing, rockpooling and went to the Minack Theatre. They even had a ride in a breakdown truck….unexpected adventures! You may have heard in the press that the Girlguiding programme is being modernised – of course it’s important to cater for today’s girls with digital skills and modern methods, but rest assured we will still be going camping, doing crafts, lighting fires and most importantly having lots of FUN! We are very lucky in Yaxley to have super premises with plenty of outdoor space at the Scout and Guide HQ off Main St. All the Yaxley Units meet there, as do the Scouts. At Holme the 2 units meet at the village hall.

You can find out more on the website www.girlguiding.org and when you’ve had a look there is a link to the registration site for girls to join at any age from 5 to 18, and also for adults to volunteer for roles as diverse as you are – Assistant leader, unit leader, parent helper, treasurer, event helper – whatever you have time for. You don’t need experience of Guiding, although it helps. A smile and a responsible attitude is all that’s required. We need more leaders to undertake training to reopen a third Brownie Unit and I would love to have a Ranger Unit based in Yaxley too. Training/DBS check etc is free!

Yaxley Methodist Chapel World War I 100th anniversary

It has been brought to my attention recently that in our item in the June issue of the Gazette it referred to the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War II when it should, of course, have referred to World War I 888,246 British and Commonwealth service personnel lost their lives. I have looked at the Help for Heroes Website and have seen that the Royal British Legion Industries have made 10inch high Perspex Tommy figures. These are made by ex-service veterans and are being sold with funds going to relevant charities such as Help for Heroes. You can have the name of a person you especially wish to remember engraved on it too. For more information look at the Help for Heroes website or The Royal British Legion website. St Peter’s Church This will be my last article for the Gazette as we are moving to Huntingdon this month. We will be sorry to leave as we are very happy living and ministering here. However, Ingrid and I are certain that God has called us to move on. It has been a real privilege to be the Vicar here for the past nine years. Thank you all for the support which you have given me personally and to the life and working of the church. My last Sunday in Yaxley will be September 23 and I will be leading the services at both 9am and 11am. It would be really good to see you at one of these services. My last service in Holme will be on Saturday September 8 at 4.30pm and again you’re very welcome. The process for recruiting a new Vicar has already begun and will move ahead after I have left. The Help to Save Scheme HMRC have provided contact information for those interested in taking part in trials of Help to Save accounts, which began with controlled groups of users in January 2018.

ccounts are expected to become fully available by October 2018. Help to Save is a new government saving scheme to support working people on low incomes to build their savings. Over four years, regular savers can deposit up to £50 a month and could receive up to £1,200 in taxfree bonuses. The scheme, administered by HMRC, will be open to UK residents who are: l entitled to Working Tax Credit and receiving Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit payments; or l claiming Universal Credit and have a household or individual income of at least £542.88 for their last monthly assessment period.

People living overseas who meet either of these eligibility conditions can apply for an account if they are a Crown servant or a member of the

British armed forces (or the spouse or civil partner of either of these). Once confirmed as eligible, individuals can start saving straight away. All transactions, including checking the balance and paying in savings, can be managed in an online account available through GOV.UK. At the end of two years, savers will get a 50% bonus based on the highest balance achieved. They can carry on saving for another two years and get another 50% bonus on their additional savings. Money paid into the account can be withdrawn at any time, but this could affect the size of the bonus payment. Help to Save accounts will be available to all those who are eligible from October 2018. Accounts will be available to open for five years.

Wildlife Trust Woodston Ponds Nature Reserve Open Day

Sunday 23 September 11am - 3pm Woodston Ponds Join the Wildlife Trust for a special open day at Woodston Ponds as part of the 2018 Nene Valley Festival – guided walks, nature trails, wildlife craft activities and plenty more. Woodston Ponds nature reserve is situated on the banks of the river Nene, just west of Peterborough city centre. Managed by the Wildlife Trust, the site is split into two halves; on the west side is a reedbed, a haven for birds such as reed warbler and reed bunting. The pools and channels within the reedbed are home to great

crested newt and some uncommon species of water beetle, and a circular boardwalk surrounds the reeds for easy access. On the east side is a small lake which can be viewed on a viewing platform (follow the track from the boardwalk). Grey herons regularly patrol the edges while the open water is frequented by many species of ducks. Once a much more industrial site, this place was previously owned/ used by British Sugar, these were the ‘settling ponds’ which took the washings from the sugar beet. Wildlife now rules the roost – sweet. Folksworth C of E September is always a busy time in a school, but with our new headteacher, Miss Norbury, arriving, this year has been busier than ever. Firstly, we have welcomed a full class of new reception children into the school. It is great to see them settling in so well and loving their new learning environment. Elsewhere in the school, classrooms now reflect the new topics the children will cover this term, from learning that ‘I am unique’, to finding out about the ‘Terrible Tudors’. And children in years 3 and 4 were surprised to find

a cave in their classroom, occupied by a giant dinosaur! Yaxley Infants In July, our year six visited Tallington Lakes to celebrate the end of their primary school years with us. They participated in rock climbing, tobogganing and paddle boarding during the day. It was lovely to see the children overcoming some fears and pushing themselves outside their comfort zones. A fabulous time was had by all and some wonderful memories made. Throughout July, year 6 were also busy with their Young Enterprise project which helped them to learn about profit, loss, budgeting and sales figures. They worked in groups and were each given £5. They thought carefully about what they could sell and we were very pleased that every group managed to make a profit. It

was lovely to see how excited the younger children were to buy the items on sale. A great afternoon was had by everyone. If you have a child who is due to start school in September 2019, we would warmly invite you to come to one of our open sessions where you can see our school in action. The sessions are on; Wednesday 26 September 1.45pm, Wednesday 3 October 10.45am and Thursday 11 October 10.45am.

New ‘call blocking’ initiative helps to silence nuisance callers You’re just about to sit down to your favourite soap or are in the middle of cooking dinner or bathing the kids, the phone rings - and it's one of those calls.

t is estimated that around 30 million nuisance calls are made each week. However, many of these are made not just by cold callers, but by scammers; bringing misery to some of the most vulnerable members of our community, such as those living alone or with dementia. At Safe Local Trades, we echo the concerns of groups like the recently formed Cambs Against Scams Partnership and the nationwide Friends Against Scams initiative - which recognise the harm done by fraudsters; not only those who dupe their victims to part with their cash, but who also feel threatened and helpless against the callers. In 2016, a grant of £500,000 was made to National Trading Standards Scams Team (NTS Scams Team) to provide telephone call blocking technology to people who are bombarded by scam and nuisance calls, and are most vulnerable to losing money

to these callers. Initially, the focus was on providing call blocking units to people living with dementia. There are an estimated 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over one million by 2025. The project has been a great success, with the units blocking 99 per cent of scam and nuisance calls received and making dramatic improvements to users’ wellbeing. And equally as important, the results saw a 97 per cent reduction in users losing money at the hands of scammers, and 85 per cent reduction in users feeling helpless to stop the calls and an 85 per cent reduction in the number of users who were worried by these calls. Friends Against Scams is a NTS Scams Team initiative, which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to “Take a Stand Against Scams”.

Friends Against Scams has been created to tackle the lack of scams awareness by providing information about scams and those who fall victim to them. This information enables communities and organisations to understand scams, talk about scams and cascade messages throughout communities about scams prevention and protection. FAS encourages communities and organisations to take the knowledge learnt and turn it into action. Anybody can join Friends Against Scams and make a difference in their own way. Cut the lawn as often as you can

Our record breaking summer has taken a toll on lawns and many look in a sorry state. As the nation’s leading lawn care experts, GreenThumb are in the ideal position to let you know what it needs. Sisters Sarah and Jo who run our local GreenThumb branch say lawns aren’t dead but are just in a dormant ‘sleeping’ state and need help coming out of the drought. Here are their top tips.

The more you mow, the more you pick up the dead grass blades and encourage new growth. This also keeps the coarser grass varieties under control.

Cut the lawn to about 1inch/2.5cm Coming out of a drought, and where there are signs of growth, your lawn should be cut a little shorter. Most of the brown grass blades which look straw like will not turn magically green and need to come off. Cutting the lawn a little shorter will usually mean that the mower will remove some of the dead grass blades allowing for new grass shoots to grow. Lightly rake/lift any dead matted areas before mowing too.

Pick up the grass clippings

Walk behind rotary mowers do a better job of picking up dead grass blades and encouraging new growth than larger ride on mowers. So, if you have the choice and you have a bigger lawn, think about using your walk behind mower for a couple of cuts.

Apply a good quality fertiliser In advance of the lawn waking up from its dormant state apply a good quality fertiliser to speed up recovery. really have no idea what we’ll be doing on the farm in September this year, but I know that when we celebrate harvest home with the harvest festival service at the local church, we’ll be singing ‘We plough the fields and scatter the good seed on the land’, when in fact we haven’t farmed like that since the last millennium! Traditionally in September, we’d be tilling the soil, moving the land, and creating a seedbed – a nice, fine tilth in which to plant our wintersown crops of wheat and barley. This year, however, could be different. With the recent purchase of a drill, part-funded through a government scheme to improve rural efficiency

and increase environmental protection, we have the possibility of moving from ‘min till’ farming to become ‘no till’. Let me explain. Traditional, ‘deep till’ systems involve ploughing the land each year before planting the seed, often moving the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches (15-20cm). We left this system behind in the 1990s when we moved to a system of ‘min till’ where we abandoned the plough (which now lies, covered in nettles and bramble) and instead we only tilled to top inch or two of soil (<5cm) using a different machine much like we might use a hoe in the allotment. We still created great conditions for the plants to establish, but we didn’t

disturb the soil, disrupt beneficial soil structure and biology, and we didn’t expose our wonderful earthworms to the birds. Though we must still turn the soil when producing root vegetables such as carrots or potatoes, and plants such as sugar beet, our new purchase will enable us to potentially do away with any tillage equipment, instead sowing the seed directly into the stubble and chopped straw left behind the combine. This is fantastic for drainage (with natural drainage paths created by throughflow, worms, and roots preserved year to year) and is also great for soil life from fungi to

bacteria to worms. There is a small yield decrease, but this is offset by the fact that we use less fuel and take the heavy tractor across the field much less often; everyone is a winner. So who knows what we’ll be doing in September. I might pop down to the orchard for seasonal apples, pears, figs, and damsons, I’ll be scouring the hedgerow for lovely blackberries and looking by the footpaths for wild mushrooms, as well as seeking out beetroot, broccoli, and butternut squash at the greengrocers and lamb, venison, and wood pigeon at the butchers. Hot weather

September marks the traditional start of autumn but the summer has been so extraordinarily hot and dry that it is probably worth thinking about how that weather may have impacted on our wildlife.

he heat and dryness has spelt bad news for slugs and snails especially following the late cold snap. They have been far less active than last year and thus hopefully numbers are returning to more normal levels after several years of glut. But species dependent on freshwater will also be suffering with many breeding areas drying up, though where water still exists it is warmer leading to quicker development hence more mosquitos in and around water but less when removed from water. Bees have seen a bumper spring as flowers have been abundant with pollen and nectar a common response to the stress of cold then

drought. This has helped to build back up numbers following several years of warm wet winters though if August does not provide enough rain there is a real danger of the food supply drying up too early potentially leading to starvation as meadows brown and dry and even trees start to take on premature autumn hues. The warm weather has also been a boon to wasps which have grown large colonies and the new queens have developed and flown the nest in early August, this does of course mean that the now redundant workers will be a persistent nuisance to barbecues and outdoor drinks probably until the first frosts arrive.
