Very Scarce 1923 South African Proof Set - A superb set of 10 coins struck in the first year of minting at the Pretoria Mint, SA 1923 South African George V Proof Set consisting of Gold Sovereign, Half Sovereign, Silver 2 1/2 Shillings, 2 Shillings (Florin), Shilling, Sixpence, Threepence, Copper Penny, Halfpenny, Farthing (10 coins in total). Following the Anglo-Boer War, South Africa experienced a severe shortage of circulation coins. In 1919, the Mint Act was promulgated and this provided for the establishment of the Royal Mint in Pretoria as a branch of the Royal Mint in London. The Mint opened its doors in 1923 at which time the coins comprising this impressive proof set were struck. The set also features sovereigns, which depict the beautifully classic design of St George and the Dragon on the reverse side. The set comes with the original display case, while the coins are slabbed to preserve their proof condition.
