he Rare Coin Company is pleased to showcase a diverse selection of numismatic material in this month’s edition of Essentially Money and we are especially proud to offer some very significant pieces such as the previously unrecorded Bank of NSW Superscribed £1 note featured on the front cover. Also of significance is the offering of a Type I & Type II Adelaide Gold Pound together with a copy of the intriguing 1852 22ct Adelaide Assay Office Gold Ingot. These historic rarities were minted at the height of the gold rush days of the 1850’s in South Australia and are indisputably numismatic icons of their time. As Australia’s first officially struck coins, the Adelaide Pounds are always high on the acquisition list of many potential buyers into numismatic rarities. We hope you enjoy the splendid coins and banknotes we have lined up for you this month.
Introducing Mr Edward Armstrong as CEO to The Rare Coin Company We are pleased to announce the exciting expansion of The Rare Coin Company and the recent appointment of a Chief Executive Office for the first time in the history of the company. Mr Edward Armstrong commenced his role as the company’s CEO in early January this year and we are extremely proud to have taken this positive step forward as another significant milestone in our 25th Anniversary year. Edward is a member of the company’s board of advice, a long term investor with the business and brings a wealth of experience through his extensive career in Senior Management.
Coming Events in April 2008 The Rare Coin Company plans to be at these two venues during April. Our numismatic consultants will be in attendance with a fine display of material for sale. We look forward to catching up with clients in these areas so hope to see you there.
Visit www.rarecoin.com.au for further details and updates regarding forthcoming shows and fairs The Rare Coin Company will be attending in 2008.

Superscribed banknotes are rare by their very nature, having been used as an interim currency in 1910 until the Australian Notes Act could be officially implemented. Formerly they were unused notes printed by various private banks trading throughout the colonised states during the 19th century which were then purchased by the newly formed Commonwealth Government for the purpose of using as official Australian Currency. These notes were overprinted with the words ‘AUSTRALIAN NOTE’ and signed by the Secretary to the Treasurer - this method known as Superscribed note issues. For a few short years they were circulated for public use before finally being withdrawn prior to the printing of Australia’s first official notes in 1913. Historically, Superscribed notes were the final chapter in Australia’s pre Federation banknote series and an important link to the introduction of Australia’s very first Commonwealth banknote issues, hence their major significance to Australian numismatics today. Through circulation most existing Superscribed examples known today are in considerable states of wear, however their extreme rarity attracts great demand which correlates to strong price performance. The reappearance of this extremely rare 1910 Bank of New South Wales £1 Superscribed note after its mammoth 80 year term confinement is an exhilarating experience in Australian numismatics offering a once in a lifetime opportunity exclusive to The Rare Coin Company.

Australia’s First Indigenous Coins The 1852 Adelaide Gold Pounds
Scarce Colonial Banknotes from 19th Century Tasmania
Amid the 1850’s Gold Rush, the first coins to be minted on Australian soil were struck at the Adelaide Assay Office. These were the famous 1852 Adelaide Gold Pounds, type I & II. The interesting Adelaide Gold Ingots came into being as the first attempt to convert gold dust and nuggets into a manageable medium of exchange. Steeped in historical significance, these numismatic pieces are today worth many times more than their original weight in gold and would hold a position of pride as well as significant investment potential in any numismatic portfolio.

Ancient Roman Coinage - A Tangible Link To Another World Throughout history governments have frequently seized the opportunity to deliver political messages and images of power on the coins they issue. The Romans were adept at this subtle use of propaganda. Through the words and images on the coins, the Romans built up an idealised view of their empire. Some of the famous and infamous names featured in the collection of coins below include: Julius Caesar, Nero, Otho, Brutus, Vespasian and Agrippina.
