An Exceptional Opportunity in Australia’s Rarest Twenty Dollar Note Phillips Wheeler Type 2 Specimen

The first thing that sprang to mind when this extremely rare Twenty Dollar Type 2 Specimen note became available, was just how seldom they are seen in these times. Type 2 boasts the rarest in the paper decimal Specimen note series and although accurate numbers have never been fully determined, their irregular market appearances suggests very small numbers of less than 10 in each denomination. Therefore we can only add that the rarity of the Type 2 Specimens can only be matched by their past performance, achieving in excess of 17%pa over the past 10 years.

The Coins That Ended The Rum Trade The Colonial New South Wales Dump A top ranking investment performer!

As the numismatic market in Australia is rapidly expanding, many coin and banknote rarities are now in greater demand with the investing public than ever before, hence a major shift in market focus is already transforming the numismatic industry. If there can be such noticeable positive growth even in a sluggish economy, what can we expect to see for Australia’s rare coin and banknote market when the economy is booming again? We hear news of America’s current economic crisis, however their numismatic market appears to be anything but, with reports of record auction sales realising in excess of $8 million just in one sale alone. In an online report, America’s leading numismatic firm, Heritage Auctions, recorded a staggering turnover of $678,326,247 in the last 12 months – yes you read that correctly…millions!! In April a unique USA 1804 Silver Proof Dollar piece sold for a mind numbing $3,737,500 – a ridiculous price for a single coin you might ask – we think not!! We’re not talking child’s play when it comes to high ranking numismatic rarities in today’s marketplace and bewildering prices such as this aren’t just the playground of rich Americans. Numismatic rarities are in big demand internationally and what we’re seeing even here in Australia today is a new wave of market maturity where buyers of rare coins and banknotes are now astute enough to strike while the iron is hot because they realise that missed opportunities can mean a huge difference in terms of dollar returns. The potential in Australian coin and banknote rarities cannot be underestimated and the market has already demonstrated that it can support individual pieces selling upwards of $1 million as seen with the 1913 number one Collins Allen Ten Shilling note selling for a record price of $1.9 million in March this year. Some of Australia’s rare coins are already approaching the million dollar barrier such as the proof 1930 Penny. When super rarities such as these and other examples come up for sale, it offers an irresistible opportunity to a growing number of investors who aspire to owning the best the market has to offer.

Positive returns for clients with Self Managed Super Funds

Having recently completed the end of financial year revaluations for our clients holding numismatic rarities in their Self Managed Super Funds, it’s extremely gratifying to see that the average portfolio returns are holding strong at around 15 -16 % p.a. and indications are that the market will continue to sustain this growth well into the foreseeable future. Congratulations to our valued clients on the continued strong performance of your portfolio. The small 1813 Colonial Dump may not be the most eye appealing coin in the marketplace, however the fascinating history surrounding it’s existence has certainly captured the imagination and demand of numismatics for almost one and a half centuries. Produced under the instructions of Governor Macquarie in 1813, the Dump, in conjunction with the host coin from which it came, the 1813 Holey Dollar, played a significant part in ending the prolific and troublesome rum trade which threatened the very existence of the fledgling New South Wales Colony. The Dump was an innovative idea for its time when Macquarie bought a shipment of large Spanish silver dollars and effectively created two coins out of one. The inner piece known as the Dump was given a new value of fifteen pence.

Approximately 800 NSW Dumps have survived the rough and harsh circulation of their time with most examples trading today in varying states of wear to which they have become well known. As Australia’s first indigenous coinage, the NSW Dollars and the Dumps are always in demand. Given their historical significance, scarcity and impressive market track record, the 1813 NSW Dump is assured of a solid future where demand will most certainly continue to far exceed their limited availability. The Rare Coin Company is pleased to present an Australian numismatic rarity of this stature in such a desirable grade for the discerning buyer of the best the market has to offer.

Scarce Issued Colonial Banknotes from the 1880’s Issued in 1881 and 1884 respectively, it’s nothing short of astonishing that these two pre federation notes have survived over 120 years in such fine states of preservation. The Union Bank of Australia was one of the great Imperial banks in Australia from 1837 until 1951 when it merged to become part of the ANZ group. The Bank of New South Wales commenced in 1817 and was the first bank in Australia, then following a merger became Westpac in 1982. Extremely Rare and historically significant with the delicious hint of mystery, these surviving issued notes will always be in high demand and offer strong returns.

Whenever opportunities to buy into Australia’s Pre decimal banknote series arise, such as the current availability of the scarce quality consecutive notes featured here, there is little that can be said that hasn’t been said before. The series is so well known for genuine scarcity, strong market demand and impressive appreciation that when opportunity knocks, the only question is… who will be first!!

So here’s your opportunity…don’t miss it!

Australian Pre Decimal Proofs

Irresistable Opportunities to Upgrade to Investment Level

When it comes to rarity and limited market availability, pre decimal proofs are now rating among the top numismatic areas in demand and although the market has seen some pretty amazing price levels in this area in recent years, current prices still fall far short of reaching their full market potential. Pre decimal proofs are renowned to have some of the smallest mintages in the entire pre decimal series. Yet when compared to Australia’s famous circulating penny, the 1930 with a mintage of 1500 and market values around $50,000, the only view that can be taken is that the pre decimal proof series has some ground to cover before prices can truly begin to do justice to their genuine scarcity. In our opinion, many of the glorious Commonwealth proofs are already outperforming the rare 1930 Penny, although there may not be as many opportunities to take advantage of availability at these prices in future years.

Popular Pre Decimal Banknotes

Slabbed Pre Decimal Coins

The popularity of pre decimal banknotes with our clients is not a singular phenomenon, with limited numbers available on the market and numismatics increasing as both a passion and profitable investment, collectors worldwide are snapping up every opportunity that comes their way.

Slabbing is an American invention which was born out of the evolution of the complex coin grading system we know today. When people started collecting ‘ancients’, many were unearthed worn and corroded and so the first system had just two grades, new and used. Over time a letter system evolved which included Poor, Fair, Good, Fine, Uncirculated and Gem with degrees such as Very, Extra or About. In the 1950’s numismatist William Sheldon came up with a numeric scale for the purpose of grading the large US cents. In perfect uncirculated condition a 1794 large cent was valued at $70; hence the 70 point scale. Finally in the 1970’s the letter and numeric systems were combined and slabbing was introduced. This system is becoming popular in Australia.

New and eager collectors and investors of rare coins and banknotes are evolving at a rapid rate creating the increased growth in demand that we enduring numismatists have witnessed in recent years. Suffice to say, if pre decimal banknotes are of interest to you, you will need to be quick.
