Square Kookaburra
A Historic and Extremely Rare Penny In 1919 the Commonwealth Government considered replacing Australia’s bulky bronze coinage already circulating at the time, with much lighter and smaller coins. Halfpenny and Penny Patterns were struck in nickel featuring the distinctly Australian Kookaburra on the reverse and the personally approved uncrowned portrait of King George V on the obverse. There were 11 variations of the trial pennies struck during 1919, 1920 & 1921, however minting difficulties and delays eventually saw the Kookaburra coin series abandoned and they never made it into circulation. Most trials were souvenired by the engravers and designers eventually making their way onto the market. With only 20 known to exist, these iconic Kookaburra Pattern Pennies are now so seldom seen and with only a few being held in private hands, this presents a prestigious opportunity for investors of important numismatic rarities.
