Union Bank Rarity
An Imposing Pre Federation Masterpiece
This Hobart-issued Union Bank of Australia note promises to be a spectacular acquisition in even the most prestigious numismatic portfolio. The magnificent 1864-issued ÂŁ1 note has, up until now, been unknown in numismatic circles, having been in the possession of a descendant of a family of early Victorian settlers since colonial times. Considering the state of preservation for an issued note from the mid 19th century, together with its historical Hobart origins, this Union Bank ÂŁ1 note offers a combination of rare features seldom found in one outstanding investment piece. Today, this extremely rare piece is ready to make a grand entrance onto the market.

D
ecember is always a particularly exciting time of the year for all of us at The Rare Coin Company. Apart from the good feelings usually associated with the festive season, it’s always gratifying to reflect on the passing year and see so many milestones achieved within the company as well as Australia’s numismatic industry as a whole. We would like to mention, however, that by far the most rewarding experiences for us personally throughout 2008, have been the many letters and positive comments we’ve received from our collector and investor clients who are thrilled with the continued growth of their numismatic investments and the pleasant relationships they have built with the team at The Rare Coin Company. This is what it’s all about for us! Building great relationships with all our clients, no matter what level of the market they are involved with, because we understand that buyer/ dealer relationships are at the heart of preserving Australia’s great currency heritage for generations to come.
Pre Federation Specimen Marvels
Competition for Specimen banknotes continues to increase as investors and collectors begin to comprehend their impressive price performance and historical significance. Very small numbers of these specially printed issues were created to mark the intended release of a new banknote for circulation. They are so rare, in fact, that only five of the below 1885 National Bank of Australasia £10 Specimen notes are known to exist. A piece to be proud of, this eye-catching Pre Federation banknote presents a dynamic opportunity for the serious investor. The £20 Bank of New South Wales undated note is very rare and promises to be a sound investment for many years to come.
1885 National Bank of Australasia Ten Pound Specimen Note
Super rarities now coming onto the market Some of the most prized numismatic rarities known today would never have been made available to the general public if it were not for the sheer demand of today’s discerning collectors and investors and the readiness of Australia’s numismatic market to expand with this growing demand. This has opened the way for dealers, Australia wide, to confidently search and negotiate for super rarities - some so rare as having never been offered on the open market before, commanding six digit price tags - and that’s just for openers. Million dollar prices are no longer barriers with this magic sum having been broken three times in the past 12 months for individual banknotes. A strong trend across all areas of the market This top end of the market is enthralling to say the least, but it doesn’t stop there. Many areas of Australia’s numismatic market are also thriving. We’ve seen some amazing price growth in collector quality pre decimal coins and banknotes and many decimal issues also. People want good quality now and they’ll happily pay to get it! This is a great indication of growing demand and expansion across all sectors of the market—even Mint commemorative issues are increasingly sought after. This area of the market is a great stimulator for all age groups and particularly popular with younger collectors attracted to the great educational themes now being encouraged by both the Royal Australian Mint and The Perth Mint.

Presenting a Banknote Acquisition of the Highest Importance
18-- Commercial Bank of Australia Ltd. Set of Five Specimen Notes (£1, £5, £10, £50 & £100)
An amazing opportunity to own one of only 3 such sets known to exist anywhere in the world.
This set of five Commercial Bank of Australia Specimen notes is one of the most striking ever likely to be available on the numismatic market. The intricate detail on each note makes it instantly recognisable as part of a spectacular series and its Specimen status allows it to be regarded as a collection of the highest calibre. One of three known examples, the set can only be expected to increase in value in coming years.
The Commercial Bank of Australia Limited operated between 1866 and 1982 Bradbury Wilkinson & Co Engravers Ltd., London Domiciled: Melbourne Grade: Uncirculated

Historical Note: The Chinese inscriptions down each side of all five notes were used by the bank when buying gold from the large population of Chinese immigrants during the Victorian gold rush era.
The £1 note was cancelled with two punch holes.
The £5, £10, £50 & £100 notes are perforated with BW & Co London Engravers.

Prized Pre Federation Banknotes
This spectacular selection demonstrates the beautiful colours and intricacies of Pre Federation banknotes, which may explain their high demand in numismatic circles and, consequently, their impressive performance as investment items. Among these magnificent notes is an exquisite 1866 £5 Specimen note of which approximately only 10 are known. The 1897 £1 note has its own special place in history, having been issued and later cancelled, making it very rare and likely to continue climbing in value for many years to come. Pre Federation notes of this ilk will add a touch of class to any numismatic portfolio.
