2007/8 marked an unprecedented era in Australian numismatics when the $1million benchmark was exceeded - not once but three times during a 12 month period for individual rarities. The re-emergence of super rarities onto the market such as the £1,000 Collins Allen Specimen banknote, the £1,000 Collins Allen Issued Note and the 1913 Collins Allen Ten Shilling Note No. 000001, all of major numismatic significance, made headlines both nationally and internationally as the hammer fell on record sale prices in excess of $1million. Record prices have been echoed in both the UK and USA over the same period, where prices realised at auctions for important rarities in both countries surpassed all expectations. The most recent record was set just last month in the UK at the St. James auction where a unique 1755 Russian Gold 20 Roubles piece sold for £1,752,000. Needless to say, we are expecting to see more of Australia’s unique and most prized rarities attracting these price levels as competition rises for the finest material available. The Rare Coin Company is proud to be associated with this level of the Australian numismatic market and we are well positioned to cater for clients building investment portfolios of the highest calibre as well as encompassing all areas of Australia’s numismatic market from the beginner to the advanced collector or investor. The consecutive pair of Superscribed notes featured on the front cover this month offers an outstanding investment opportunity of unparalleled importance in this area of the market. These splendid pre Federation notes represent the pinnacle in Superscribed note issues - firstly having been reserved as archival treasures since their time of issue and, secondly, boasting the finest of only two pairs known in existence. Words barely describe the pride of securing rarities of the highest numismatic significance to offer our valued clients as we launch into 2009. It is our hope that there may be an opportunity waiting for you in this exciting edition of Essentially Money. Please enjoy.

Pre Federation Colour Trials Coveted Masterpieces of Their Time
Colour Trials are a previously agreed design printed in various colours and then presented to the issuing bank for their selection of the preferred colour. They are also used to demonstrate the skill of the printer to their customers. These issues are generally unique as only one of each colour trial is printed and they are very rarely offered to the numismatic market. Colour trials always differ slightly from the normal issue and are highly prized and sought after by both collectors and investors worldwide.

The Golden Age of Piracy - roughly the period 1650 to 1725 - was an era of infamous brigands like Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, Black Bart, Henry Morgan and Calico Jack who terrorised shipping in search of Spanish silver dollars, better known as ‘pieces of eight’. No more than 1,500 of these fivecoin sets will be released by The Perth Mint in presentation packaging, making them rare treasures that any self-respecting pirate would raise hell to acquire.
