For the purpose of achieving a consistent, easily comprehensible category classification, we take the following into account during the rating process: facilities, furnishings and the quality of services provided. You can get a simple picture by noting the number of SWALLOWS that correspond to our rating. LES HIRONDELLES is exclusively responsible for this rating. 1 swallow: Simple, decent accommodation for our guests that are not too demanding regarding the facilities and the furniture of their accommodation during their stay. 2 swallows: Simple accommodation with the necessary facilities. 3 swallows: Av erage well maintained accommodation with equipment in very good condition in selected areas with a pleasant surrounding environment. 4+ swallows: High standard accommodation with very good facilities and equipment that will satisfy even the most demanding customers. In both cases the rooms are connected. These apartments can accommodate 2-4 people. Type C: A two room apartment that consists of two separate bedrooms and a fully equipped kitchen, WC/shower. This type of apartment does not have a living room. These apartments can accommodate 4-5 people. Type D: A three room apartment, consisting of two bedrooms and living room that can be used as a bedroom with two sofa beds, a full equipped kitchenette, WC/shower or bathtub. These apartments can accommodate 4-6 people.

THESSALY The Thessalian basin was created at the end of the 3rd period of the Caenozoic era (60 to 4 thousand million years ago). The basin originally contained a large lake, the waters of which were confined by the surrounding mountain ranges. The geological activity which created the Tempe Valley, allowed the waters of the lake to exit into the sea. This natural irrigation of the area left behind the lakes of Voiviida (a.k.a. Carla), Nessonida, and a large plain, which has been the basis of the area's agriculture for centuries. Surrounded by mountains of renowned beauty, Thessaly stands out by the uniqueness of its nature and the vastness of its geographical variation. The Northern Sporades island complex, (Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonnisos being the larger islands), Mount Pelion, Mount Olympous, Mount Kissavos, and the Agrapha mountain range, are all areas of immense and celebrated beauty. The area also enjoys high historical and mythological repute. Mount Olympous has been made famous because of its role in ancient Greek mythology, that is, being the home of the twelve Olympian gods (Zeus, Hera, Athena, etc.). Mount Pelion was supposed to have been home to the Centaurs, and the school of the most famous Centaur of all, Heron, a school through which all the ancient heroes of Greece had passed, Hercules and Theseus included. Iolkos, an ancient cite located at the bottom of the mountain is also the home city of Jason, and departing cite of the Argonauts. Historically, the area is not famous for legends alone. The greater Thessalian area is home to a very large number of archeological cites, some of which enjoy worldwide fame and are of immense importance. With the earliest sights dating from the time of the early cave man, and a number of unique Paleolithic and Neolithic sights, ancient Greek and Roman excavations become almost common. The area is not short on Byzantine and Medieval cites either. Byzantine churches such as those found at Meteora are a worldwide attraction. In particular, the vertical rocks on which the monasteries are build, constitute a unique geological phenomenon of unequaled beauty and interest.

METEORA

Everyday life itself is traditional with settlements and villages composed of neoclassical houses constructed in the last two or three centuries, and connected by rock covered streets and alleys that seem to have been brought out of the past. Pelion is home to a number or such traditional villages, and the Abellacia and Metaxori areas are also well known for exactly this type of traditional village. Throughout the year a number of important festivities take place, in every city and town, denoting the rich cultural and social background of the people. Eastern Pelion

Eastern Pelion Here is one of the most imposing mountain sceneries, harmoniously combined with the sea. Departing from Volos, following the road to Portaria and Makrinitsa, which leads to Hania you can witness breathtaking views over the Pagasitikos Gulf. Continuing, behind the serpentine road leads along the dense beech and chestnut trees down to Zagora (47km, 480m above sea level). This is the largest village of Pelion and provides many stunning views of the sea. Here you can visit the famous school where the spiritual fathers of the Greek revolt studied. Also worth visiting is the historic library, with rare books and manuscripts, along with the Byzantine churches of Agios Georgios and Agia Kyriaki. The port of Zagora has a beautiful sandy beach with crystal clear waters. From the tree-studded town square, the view extends over three levels, which is also known as the "Balcony of the Aegean". South of Zagora you will find the village Makrirahi (46km from Volos, 300m above sea level). A deep picturesque ravine divides the town from the neighbouring village Anilio, which is a typical traditional village found in the Pelion region. Further south, it pays to leave the main road and to visit Kissos, one of the most mountainous villages on the east side of Pelion. Continue (44km from Volos) to Agios Ioannis, where the green of the mountain blends harmoniously with the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, you will find a popular vibrant resort.

In Agios Ioannis you can swim at the long beach, or on the adjoining beaches of Plaka and Papa Nero. In the Bay of Damouchari, where the filming of scenes from the famous film MAMMA MIA took place! Here you can find delicious fish served in the local taverns along the coast. The nearest town is Mouressi (59 km from Volos, 370 m above sea level) the site of construction for an amphitheatre between the fruit and chestnut groves. Five kilometers from Mouressi, on a path running through lush groves, you will arrive in Tsagarada, the supporting pillar of Pelion (54km from Volos, 450m above sea level), this is one of the most beautiful places in Greece. There are several hotels and the place is rich with plane and chestnut covered trees. Featured characteristics of the place are the many mansions that fortify the village, between them run the old cobblestone streets and beautiful views of the Aegean. Not to be forgotten is the landmark of the town, the thousand year old plane tree in the village square, which has a diameter of 14 meters. Do not miss out here to try the traditional dish Spezofai and the traditional bean soup. An 8km long asphalt road from here leads to Milopotamos, the port of Tsagarada. Here the rocky coast takes on many stages and ends on a sheltered beach.

A way of 1km leads to Portaria but before reaching there a side road of 3 klm leads left to Makrinitsa . Both villages in an altitude of 600 m. are two of the most famous villages of Pelion with their mansions, climbing, cobbled streets and the babbling brooks beside them. In the large square of Makrinitsa with its tall old plane trees and the ice-cold crystal water of the carved fountain, there is the church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos. At the edge of the square survives a hagiography by Theofilos and in the location of the ruined Topalis mansion, has been built the wonderful Folkore Museum which hosts a collection of rare objects and mementos. In Makrinitsa the known custom of "Maidon" still survives; a series of wild ceremonial performances that have their origin in the ancient pagan Dionysiac ceremonies. A visitor can also admire the old churches, chapels and monasteries, many of them were rebuild or restored but other ruined and abandoned can be found in all round the village till the settlement of Koukourava, the place that join the city of Volos with Makrinitsa, too.

DISCOVER LOCAL DIVING For the certified scuba divers who wish to have an orientation to the local underwater environment, we start our diving excursions from the beach Pagania of Horto in front of Leda hotel, in a variety of unique dive sites within three seas, to explore the islets of the Pagasitic Gulf, towards the islets of Evoean Gulf, as well as the wild areas along the eastern coasts of Pelion and North Evia in the Aegean Sea. The area is ideal for diving 365 days of the year, independent of the weather. The water conditions are ideal; the water is crystal blue and limpid, offering perfect underwater vision, while the underwater morphology is most impressive. Ship wrecks, vertical walls, reefs in the middle of the sea, gorgonian forests and contacts with large mammals (seals, dolphins) are the aims of our daily excursions. The particular geographical position and the strong permanent currents at some points, contribute to the preservation of the rich underwater flora and fauna in the wider area. This also contributes to the maintenance of exceptionally rich submarine biodiversity in the wider region. ADVANCED OPEN WATER DIVER Aim of Program: To allow the Open Water Divers to expand their abilities in the water and have a more spherical practice experience. Requirements / Restrictions: To participate to this program someone must have certification as an Open Water Diver, of any internationally recognized organization and must be at least 12 years old with written approval by a parent or guardian, or at least 18 years old without written approval by a parent or a guardian. Content of Program: This course consists of 4 dives that introducing the student to more specialized diving forms (deep water diving, night diving, underwater orientation, search and recovery, wreck diving, etc.), while at the same time helps (the student) to have experience and confidence to the underwater world.
