The Historic Town of Grand Lake The historic town of Grand Lake is situated at the western entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park with hundreds of miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails in its backyard. Have your camera close at hand because these trails are full of wildflowers, scenic views and abundant wildlife. During the summer, Grand Lake is home to a number of festivals and events that cater to every taste – chili cook-offs, open-water fishing tournaments, golf tournaments, 4th of July and Constitution

Week fireworks on the lake, arts and crafts fairs, the famous Buffalo Barbecue, “Yappy Hours” for you and your pet, live music, and many more unique events. Grand Lake is the deepest natural lake in Colorado with depths of up to 265 feet. Fed by melted-snow runoff, the lake is clear and pristine, surrounded by whitecapped mountains. You can take your own boat out on the three lakes or rent a motorboat, sailboat or pontoon. Or simply cast a fishing pole from shore and enjoy the gentle sounds of the lapping waves, the cool mountain air and the warm sun on your shoulders. Grand Lake connects with Shadow Mountain Lake via a canal, and a few miles south is Lake Granby, the second largest body of water in Colorado. The town of Granby Located at 8,000 feet in elevation and about 15 miles north of Fraser, Granby is surrounded by tall, whitepeaked mountains and has two worldclass golf courses. Lake Granby is a 10-minute drive north of town, where fishing and boating is world-class!

Granby has cheaper lodging options and shops offering fishing supplies, antiques, restaurants (from fast food to fine dining), services for auto parts and repair, a large grocery store, an Amtrak station, thrift stores … even dog washing and grooming!

Granby is also home to an alpaca farm with free tours and alpaca yarn for purchase. Watch cowboys in action at the Granby Rodeo and catch a bonus fireworks show on July 5th for their last event.

Granby has lots of grassy parks to take your kids and dogs to play, including two town parks, a soccer field, ball park, and skatepark with a quarterpipe and aboveground features. Hike or mountain bike the Fraser to Granby Trail from Granby Ranch part way or all the way (about 25 mi.) to Winter Park Resort.

When the snow melts

at Winter Park Resort, summer activities start to heat up. Within the “Mountain Bike Capital,” the resort offers world-class bike competitions all summer, as well as multi-day mountain-biking camps geared to all levels of ability and gender.

Chairlift-serviced downhill mountain biking is an adrenaline rush, especially with top-of-the-line rental bikes and body padding built to absorb the bumps! If you want to catch a world-class mountain biking competition, the Colorado Freeride Festival (July 26-27) is an exciting, highflying show of freestyle tricks and speed! Let your kids run wild at the base with mini-golf, mini zipline, giant maze, climbing wall, bungee-jumping trampolines and more. Take the lift to ride the alpine slide or play on the disc golf course.

Geocaching is a free, high-tech scavenger hunt using your GPS. There is a free instructional class on Wednesdays. Pan for gold with the younger kids or just kick back with a beer and relax to free live music from 4-6pm on Friday afternoons in the Village.

Winter Park The town of Winter Park is the place to find live music,

hand-crafted brews and awesome restaurant fare ranging from sushi to ethnic to fast food! Claiming the status of the highest incorporated town in the country (with not-so-high prices), the center of Winter Park is located at 9,100 feet in elevation, with portions of the town located as high as 12,060 feet.

Hideaway Park is right in the middle of town with live concerts that are intimate and serene. Let the kids run free on the grass or drop into the newly-expanded skatepark. Rent a bike from a local shop and cruise along the paved Fraser River Trail up to the resort or bike into the Vasquez Creek trail system in the National Forest. Or stroll through outdoor craft festivals and art galleries.

In 1884, a store merchant from Dillon, Colorado opened a subsidiary store and trading post at the confluence of the Grand (Colorado) and Muddy Rivers. A post office opened in the store and then a trading post, which was subsequently named after the owner, Rudolph Kremmling. At the same time, Bill Kimball started a ferry service crossing the Grand River. This was critical for those travelling down the Blue River Valley, since the closest bridge was located in Hot Sulphur Springs. As a result of Kimball’s ferry crossing and Kremmling’s businesses, a small village began to sprout up. It was slow growing, even though the post office had plenty of business, centered in a large area surrounded by many ranches. By 1889, Kremmling had the second

busiest post office in Grand County, a blacksmith shop and a hotel. Kimball replaced his ferry crossing with a bridge.

Kremmling’s first newspaper, The Grand County News, debuted in 1903. Within its pages were Kremmling advertisements for three stores, one hotel, a blacksmith, a barber shop, three saloons, and two stagecoach lines. Nonetheless, the town’s very existence was in jeopardy. The Hydro Electric Power Company and the New Century Light and Power Company filed plans to build a dam at the mouth of Gore Canyon earlier that year. If built, the dam would create a giant reservoir which would drown Kremmling and all the land clear up to Parshall. Furthermore, the project would stymie David Moffat’s plans to build his Denver, Northwestern, and

To make matters worse, the US Reclamation Service

entered the picture to support the building of the dam to supply water to Arizona and California. The whole notion of the dam and reservoir was likely a ploy from railroad magnate, Edward Harriman, to frustrate Moffat’s building of a railroad. In the end, the dam was busted when President Theodore Roosevelt stepped in and ordered to end their work in Gore Canyon in 1905.

Despite the ongoing threat to their town, the people of Kremmling voted to incorporate in April1904, and Tracey Tyler was elected the town’s first mayor. After the disintegration of the Gore Canyon dam project, town residents looked forward to the prosperity that the oncoming railroad would bring. That is, except for Tyler. The mayor abruptly resigned and left Kremmling for good as the rails came into town in 1906, declaring that he did not want to live in a town with a railroad.

as the terminus of the Moffat Road from 1906 to 1908, while crews did the arduous task of extending rails through Gore Canyon. By 1906, Kremmling

had telephone service, a bank, several hotels, and nine saloons. Money and liquor flowed freely in the newly minted railroad town. In 1907, Kremmling’s town hall was erected. (It was razed after it burned in 1952.) In 1908, Kremmling’s first church, St. Peter’s Catholic Church, was built, signaling that the town had truly grown up.

As the railroad moved

on from the construction through Gore Canyon, Kremmling had established itself as the trade, distribution, transportation, and social center of a very large geographical area. What truly defined the area was a ranching economy. Large hay meadows and cattle herds spread out in all directions. To celebrate this way of life, the Grand County Fair was formed in 1912, the first such event in Northwestern Colorado. The rodeo was a huge success and became an annual event known as the Middle Park Fair.

Today, with a population of 1,444, Kremmling is the second largest town in Grand County. It is surrounded by wide-open spaces, mostly due to the working ranches that still ring the town. As for Kremmling itself, a walk around town reveals its past in its many historic structures that still exist today. The Heritage Park Museum celebrates the ranching, railroading, recreational, and Forest Service history of the area. www.grandcountyhistory.org

Best Wildflower Hikes in Grand By Cindy Kleh After an incredible winter of snowfall – over 30 feet of snow by closing day at the ski resort and a few feet more in May – there’s no doubt that this summer is going to be a banner year for wildflowers! Almost everywhere you walk will be a spectacular place to view these lovelies, but here are some suggestions

on where to find some of the more memorable flower hikes in Grand County. Monarch Lake and Beyond One hike that locals will often name when asked where to hike for flowers is Monarch Lake above Lake Granby. Because it is so picturesque, well-known and accessible, this hike and its parking lot can be crowded on weekends in the summer, but it is still a stellar location for viewing wildflowers and butterflies. On the way up to Grand Lake on Highway 34, take a right onto County Road 6 (5.4 miles from the Granby intersection), and, after paying the daily ANRA fee of $5 per vehicle, drive 10 miles to the Monarch Lake parking lot. You can hike either direction on the loop trail around the lake, or head off from the Monarch Lake Trail and climb uphill to Cascade Falls 4.6 miles one way. There are four separate waterfalls along the 0.7-mile stretch of this trail.

If you get an early start and your group has strong hikers, take the Buchanan Pass Trail (3.3 miles up Cascade Falls Trail) to Fox Park and enjoy blueberries and huckleberries along the way. Buchanan Pass rises high above Fox Park in the Indian Peaks Wilderness (permits are required for overnight stays). The trail climbs above tree line to alpine tundra, where the flowers and views are just insane! If you want to experience the flowers and serenity of high-alpine tundra but don’t have the legs or lungs for a long, steep hike, drive up Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain Park to over 12,000 feet in elevation and hike the Tundra World Nature Trail – a half hour uphill walk among low-lying bunches of pink, red, yellow, purple and white wildflowers. The growing season up here lasts just 40 days, and July is your best bet. Bring your binoculars and look for marmot, pika, ptarmigan, elk and big horn sheep. Berthoud Pass Near the top of the west side of Berthoud Pass is the trailhead for Second Creek. Park at mile marker 240 and follow the trail up a stream with small

What’SUP with Stand Up Paddleboarding? By Cindy Kleh

Standup paddling (SUP) is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It started on the coasts but the sport has been popping up on inland lakes and rivers all over the world! Why is SUP growing so fast?

For starters, it’s a low-impact sport that is relatively easy to master. It can be anything from a relaxing ride to an intense workout, or it can be a water toy that keeps kids laughing all day. There’s even room for the family pet! Baby Boomers are flocking to this sport for its quiet freedom on the water and for a gentle way to strengthen the body against back pain and other

physical challenges of old age. Constantly adjusting the feet improves balance skills while paddling works all the core muscles. Up here in the mountains, serene high-alpine lakes are (silently) screaming, “SUP ME!” Anglers are also getting on board, using SUP boards adapted for carrying fishing gear to access coves and shallow spots that boats can’t navigate. For folks with small cars and apartments, the newest trend is the inflatable standup paddleboard. These boards are incredibly durable, and the entire craft can even be taken

backpacking and re-inflated anywhere with a pump.

Water Fun

A smaller size inflatable board is about 10 feet long and six inches thick, and weighs 20 pounds with a maximum weight capacity of 400 pounds. A larger size is 14 feet long and eight inches thick, and can hold up to 800 pounds. Inflatable SUPs open up a whole new world of camping and fishing possibilities! You can fit a cooler, a bundle of wood, your dog and your backpack on the board and paddle to an island or use it to fish a glacial lake. It also doubles as an air mattress. Trail Ridge Marina on Shadow Mountain Reservoir rents paddle boards and inflatable SUP gear for cruising around the shores of Shadow Mountain Reservoir. Rocky Mountain Outfitters in Grand Lake also rents inflatable boards. Island Adventure Tours can take you out for a tour. More experienced paddleboarders can conquer the Upper Colorado River by renting inflatable SUP boards and gear from Power World in Granby. If you want to be part of a full- or half-day guided trip with drop off and pick up provided on the river, try AVA Rafting in Kremmling.

Tips for First-Timers: • Start on your knees and work up to a standing position as you start to understand how to balance on the water. • Stay in the middle of the board and reposition your feet in tiny increments instead of big steps. As your balance skills improve, you will be able to move around the board more freely. • Wear a life jacket, especially in these cold mountain waters. • Go out on the lakes in the early morning or sunset hours so you’re not fighting the wind and boat traffic. If it is breezy, head into the wind for your journey and cruise back with it. • Always stay attached to the board with the leash. If you lose a paddle, you can always paddle to shore with your arms, but if you lose the board, it may be a long, cold swim. • The paddle will help with balancing. Hold it with one hand on top and the other about shoulder width apart, and get it in the water so you can start moving. Like riding a bike, standing still is tippy. Rocky Mountain National Park averages about 3 million visitors per year, but only 0.01% are backcountry overnight users. From the Kawuneeche Valley, all points lead up in elevation out of this valley where the headwaters of the Colorado River are born. From the beginner to the experienced, there are many special places to be discovered. For the novice backpacker: The North Inlet Trail: A short hike of less than two miles from the North Inlet Trailhead leads to Summerland Park. Two sites, an individual site and a group site, are situated near excellent moose habitat and are a short distance from the North Inlet Creek which flows into Grand Lake. Setting up base camp here allows for exploration up the drainage to North Inlet Falls, with excellent trout fishing in nearby Big Pool.

As you drive 1.1 miles from this intersection by the Chamber of Commerce, take the left fork of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yâ&#x20AC;? onto West Portal Road. Look for the North Inlet Trailhead sign on the left. Turn left onto a dirt road, County Road 663 and drive 0.3 miles to the Trailhead.

For those travelers who are up for a more challenging experience: The Timber Lake Trail: A more challenging hike with a beautiful lake reward. The Timber Lake Trailhead, at 9010 feet, starts a gradual ascent out of Kawuneeche Valley through habitat frequented by elk. The trail turns east and starts to climb through some heavily wooded terrain at the base of Jackstraw Mountain and ascends to the first available campsite, Timber Creek, at 10,400 feet (three miles in). Venturing on across a high-alpine meadow sprinkled with wildflowers in summer, hikers have their choice of three additional campsites nestled around Timber Lake. The highest site, Snowbird, sits at 11,010 feet and 4.6 miles from the trailhead. The lake lies below Mount Ida in an area that offers the backcountry solace most backpackers seek.

>> High-alpine Timber Lake is worth the effort getting there! Access to the Timber Lake Trailhead: To get there from the Kawuneeche Visitor Center, follow Trail Ridge Road ten miles north. Timber Creek Trailhead will be on the right, directly across from the Colorado River Trailhead.
