Remarks from the Managing Director THIS PAST YEAR has challenged us to rethink everyday practices and has changed the way

we live our lives. Just like the creative, resilient, and agile students we work with, our team used an entrepreneurial mindset to adapt to the new virtual world, while continuing to execute on our mission to educate, empower, and equip student entrepreneurs of all kinds.

When preparing for last academic year, our team made the strategic decision to focus on signature programs that work well in the virtual environment and resonate most with our stakeholders. As a result, we were thrilled to offer an expanded Pitch Dingman Competition and accept our largest Terp Startup Accelerator cohort to date. These expanded programs allowed us to engage more students and a wider range of mentors. In fact, our female and POC mentor engagement increased from 48% to 65% in the past two years.

All we have accomplished would not be possible without the help of our community, who has given us unwavering support. Our Board of Advisors network consisting of 21 founders, investors and subject matter experts reached 100% philanthropic giving and volunteered countless virtual hours to our students and programs. On Giving Day in March, we received record high donations as we raised over $36,000 in funding, a 250% increase from last year.

The University of Maryland rose again in the annual Princeton Review rankings, climbing to #6 for best college for undergraduate entrepreneurship. The data used for this ranking is a collaborative effort among several UMD innovation and entrepreneurship units. The Dingman Center programs are a key driver in areas including the percentage of students involved in entrepreneurial endeavors; the reach of mentorship programs; competition prizes and seed funding; and experiential learning components.

As the new year began, Maryland Smith welcomed a new dean, Prabhudev Konana, Ph.D. In this role, Dean Konana leads Smith in its mission to create knowledge, promote an inclusive learning environment that fosters intellectual discovery, and equip current and future leaders to assess complex problems and deliver innovative solutions. We look forward to working with Dean Konana to elevate Maryland Smith and hope you enjoy reading his letter on the following page.

A Letter from the Dean DEAR DINGMAN CENTER COMMUNITY,

As the newest dean of Robert H. Smith School of Business, it is indeed an honor and a privilege to serve this vibrant community. I am deeply grateful to the university and school leadership for their confidence in me to lead Maryland Smith onto further greatness.

In my first few months, it was evident that the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship is one of the most frequently mentioned names around innovation and entrepreneurship among campus leadership. It doesn’t surprise me why the Center is mentioned so often.

Since its founding 35 years ago, the Dingman Center has touched thousands of aspiring entrepreneurs through its programs and courses. In just the last five years, the Center has helped launch more than 500 student startups, engaged 400 mentors, and distributed more than $700,000 in non-dilutive seed funding to student entrepreneurs. If you have purchased Maryland gear from Route One Apparel, then you have supported a business touched by the Dingman Center. If you have received fruits and vegetables on your doorstep from Hungry Harvest, then you have supported a business touched by the Dingman Center. These are just two examples of the robust community of entrepreneurs who make up the ecosystem that helps startups thrive at Maryland.

The Center’s reputation and entrepreneurial initiatives are central to our business school. We will continue to leverage the profound impact of the Center in our strategic planning for the school. We have already begun that process by associating the Center to the Department of Management & Organization with the new Innovation and Entrepreneurship minor. We will touch more students and encourage more ideas to grow and come to market.

The Dingman Center is thriving because of the active engagement of many stakeholders – faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, venture mentors, and a very strong advisory board. I have had the privilege of meeting the Center’s board members and volunteer leaders. I cannot thank you enough for your support and passion for promoting entrepreneurship and supporting young entrepreneurs.

This summer, I was fortunate to speak with David Dingman, whose father Michael D. Dingman partnered with former Dean Rudy Lamone to create the Center. I am hoping we get opportunities to meet in person for you to know me better as well as for me to hear your thoughts and ideas. I strongly believe that we are most successful when our community is engaged, and I will do everything possible to continue to build a very strong community. A Remembrance: Thomas (Tom) Savransky, Founder of Enly In January, our team received the tragic news that one of our Fearless Founders, Thomas (Tom) Savransky, died in a car crash at age 23. Tom was the founder of Enly, a sustainability conscientious fashion-tech startup that developed virtual fitting technologies. As a student, Tom participated in many Dingman Center programs while developing Enly. In 2019, Tom’s hustle and commitment to taking Enly to market secured him a spot in our inaugural cohort of Terp Startup Fellows. Tom had the entrepreneurial spirit that we love to see in our student entrepreneurs and he will be terribly missed. The loss of Tom’s potential is heartbreaking.

“ Tom’s spirit was one of an entrepreneur who was willing to do anything to make his business work. In his words, he was willing to sacrifice it all: health, friends, family, simple pleasures.

In many ways, Tom embodied the story of the true entrepreneur, one who undergoes extreme sacrifice with little recognition. The mortal, real, industrious entrepreneur, rather than the glorified fantasy of the entrepreneur.”

Giving Day 2021 Exceeds All Expectations: We would like to thank our donors for the overwhelming support we received on Giving Day 2021.
