Site Plan

How many ways can a roof serve a building? Air, light, and water, the ribbon roof system is designed to take care of them all. The gaps between each ribbon allow natural air ventilation by the stack effect. The nature of the saw tooth roof avoids most direct sunlight and unwanted glare, meanwhile the reflected indirect light can enter the room softly.

Gutters are located at the bottom of each ribbon member to collect the rainwater for the interior planters. Finally, the ribbons bend down on the south of the building to become a facade system that can manage the solar radiation while provide enough views to the sides because of the saw tooth shape.

Urban Butcher Butcher Shop & Steak House

Professional Practice 2016: Rendering & Design Wharf, 800 Maine Avenue SW Washington, DC

First Floor Plan

Rustic, Modern, and... Meat? A DC steak house owner wants a new rustic modern restaurant by the DC waterfront. He says its will be a place where fun dinning meets fine dinning, happy hours roll into three course dinners, and vintage champagnes pop just as much as the colors. So we designed a place where aged leather and restored wood meet contemporary

urban touches of metal and stained concrete, where the upbeat sidewalk bar gives a lightness and approachability that beckons passersby, and where an open-air dining room shines up by the restaurant jewel piece, a beautiful inlayed illuminated dry-aging room that becomes the grand chandelier.

Can architecture entice passersby? An organic shaped facade inspired from grasshopper’s wings, makes the perfume store stand out from its neighbors and waves to the passersby. The translucent teflon infills the fore wing metal frame, protects and blurs the private interior. Meanwhile, the two hind

Can geometries illustrate a boat house? Located near a windy lake in a natural park, the boat house is designed in an oval shape to ease the pressure from wind without obstructing too much air flow. Under the oval shell, waffle slabs are used for each floor to reinforce the interior structure and the exterior oval frame. Taking advantage of the existing slope, the partially

underground boat storage is protect from the sunlight and extreme weather while the upper floor public space is open to natural daylight and fantastic natural park view. A Grasshopper scripted roof allows adequate natural lighting and minimizes the solar heat gain by manipulating the size of openings.

Can 45째 make a building better? Form follows function. When it comes to a residential design, comfort is the key. Starting from the basement garage, where the 45째 is used to guide the drive direction away from the walk direction, so that safety is ensured. Then, the upper-floor apartment layouts use 45째 again to diverge the space based on the different room functions. Finally, the center lobby sticks out by 45째 to form a pentagon shape, which can provides more views from the left and right, so the natural duck pond scenery is more approachable.
