Spinnerbaits work well for catching bass, pike, walleye and even big panfish. They’re also simple to fish; just cast them out, reel them back and start catching!

Planer boards are great for catching walleye, crappie, perch and any other fish roaming open water or around structure. Here’s how they work and how they’ll improve your fishing game this year.

PLANE & SIMPLE How Planer Boards Work. Let’s say you’re fishing for walleye and you think they’re about 10 feet below the surface. You’d select a bait that runs about 7 to 9 feet below the surface. (Most fish are more likely to go up for bait than down.) Let your bait out behind the boat until it is running at your preferred depth. Then attach the board to your line and put it in the water. By keeping your line just a little tight, the board will begin running out to the side of the boat. Once the board is at a good distance, engage the reel and put the rod in a rod holder. Learn more at www.larsonfxseries.com

Planer Board Advantages. Planer boards allow you to get the bait out away from the boat, making it less likely you’ll spook fish. You can also get more lines in the water more efficiently, giving you the opportunity to experiment with different lure colors, shapes and sizes to more effectively determine what’s working on a given day.

Planer boards allow you to distance your lines from the

USE JIG CATCH BIG By Bob Jensen

If I could only take one type of lure in the boat with me, any time of year, for any type of fish, I would grab my box of jigs. Jigs, I believe, are the most universal bait available to anglers today. My Larson FX 1750 tiller comes with tackle storage in the bow, plus two more storage areas below the console that are ideal for jigs. A selection of jigs in 1/16 oz, 1/8 oz and 1/4 oz sizes will do the job most of the time. If you fish rivers or in heavy cover for largemouth bass, you’ll need some heavier ones. If panfish are your game, you’ll want to have some smaller ones. I like to use a jig with a plastic body, and I want the body to be a different color than the head. That way, the fish sees two different colors, increasing the odds of showing the color it wants on that day at that time.

Get more tips for selecting the right jigs at larsonfxseries.com.

Whats in Bob’s Tackle Box Bob likes to store his jigs in a new type of tackle box, a Lure Lock with Elastak Liner. The flat box has a sticky surface so jigs don’t move around, preventing tangling and chipping. Lurelock.com

Stand-Up Fire-Ball® Jig Bob says, “I tie on the long-shank version when using plastic, and use the original short-shank version if using live bait.”

“If not using a plastic jig with an action tail, you can tip your jig with a live minnow, leech or piece of nightcrawler,” Bob says.

TROLLING IN A LARSON TILLER By Jeff Smith

One of the most productive ways to present a bait to fish is by trolling. When you want to cover water quickly, I recommend front-trolling

1

with crankbaits because you can cover different depths easily and vary the trolling speed with a simple twist of the tiller handle. When you locate a school of fish, such as walleye, in a small area,

2

back-trolling works best, due to precise boat control and a slower presentation.

The Larson FX dual console series puts versatility front and center. Each model is built to be a multispecies champion and to navigate a variety of waters. But the flexibility doesn’t end there. You may be a diehard angler, but perhaps some of your weekends are spent with the family onboard, as well. Larson FX’s range of dual console models accommodates any activity you can dream of. But don’t mistake versatility for a lack of focus. Our boats are built with spacious layouts, plentiful storage, premium seating and first-class amenities—no scrimping anywhere. Your day is a blank page that you can write any way you want, but no matter what, you can always count on reliable, long-lasting craftsmanship and all-day comfort.

As a fishing guide dealing with lots of people who might only fish a time or two a year, I’ve come to realize that the species of fish on the end of the line doesn’t matter that much for most young anglers. In fact, most just want “something that pulls back.” For that reason, whenever I have kids onboard my boat, we often target panfish like bluegills, crappies and perch. These fish are numerous in lots of waters across the Midwest, are usually willing biters and “pull hard” when hooked. It’s amazing and fun to see how excited first-

It’s amazing and fun to see how excited first-time anglers get when their bobber goes down When kids are involved, I find it’s best to end the trip while the fish are still biting. The odds are pretty good that your first-time angler will offer up the question, “Can we do that again?” In addition to fishing for active fish and keeping the trip short, consider stopping for an ice cream
